Rareview: Bringing black voices to Occupy Wall Street

Rareviews go inside the lives of those in America whose stories we don't always hear.

In the earliest day of Occupy Wall Street, Malik Rahsaan wasn't seeing the black and brown faces he expected to be there.  Rahsaan, the "Occupy the Hood" co-founder, and Monica Montgomery, an activist, saw the issues in their community need to have a voice at Zuccotti Park, too. "We've been struggling and now America's getting a taste of what we've been living with and dealing with for generations," Montgomery said. "Let's join and be a part of change for everyone."

I think things r gonna change. The amount of angry homeless people is the driving force behind the movement. AND it is not a bunch of college kids at the general assemblies its people that have been beat down in life too the point where it no longer matters if they live or die, its about fighting for what they believe in.

I simply nedeed to appreciate you all over again. I do not know what I would've sorted out in the absence of the actual tips discussed by you directly on my industry. Certainly was a hard situation in my opinion, however , finding out the professional mode you resolved that made me to weep with joy. Extremely happier for the support and then wish you realize what a great job you are always undertaking teaching the others via a blog. More than likely you haven't met all of us.

Fact is that alot of these occupy kids camp out during the day and go back to their dorms or homes to sleep at night, black folk are too busy making ends meet to buy a tent and sit out in a park and get beaten by cops, for a cause that has yet to find its legs, do you know what ideas occupy has to change the status quo What sit in a park and beat drums?
You shouldn't be frustrated their are not more black and brown faces out there, we might vote democrat, but are values are far from liberal, we are realists, if occupy can't explain how they are gonna achieve change, why would you expect minorities to put faith in it? Malcolm x had a plan and ideas of how to get us to the next step, so did martin and marcus, james farmer and many other leaders, but occupy can't. Thats the problem.

this is ridiculous. this has nothing to do with people who don't want to work and are trying to live off the government. this has to do with people who have worked and have been turned down. the bible even says it. you don't work, you don't eat. i guess you have to throw an excuse out there to feel sorry for yourself.

It is very strange that the whole human family has not awaken to the fact which allows so much bickering to continue while those in leadership positions continue to rape, pillage and murder in the name of freedom and the American Dream. The nightmare is that we continue to be at each other throats for the dregs that fall off Mr. Gilmo's table all the while Mr. Gilmo is laughing on his way to the Bank.

If I had a wish that could come true, one would be that we could eliminate the word Minority from our vocabulary. I think it was only created to keep "certain" people in their places.

I am part Black, American Indian, German & others... When I am handed a form with a section to fill out on race, I choose "other" or simply do not check one. Hmm... maybe I should form my own "race group" to push our own agendas of how the "mutts" have to deal problems simply because we are "mutts".

No offense intended, but the world's problems don't come down to black, white, or any other race. The world is wrong and we all as humans need to come together and stand up to repel the corporatocracy before we are all their wage-slaves

Seriously! I'm so tired of seeing statistics based on race. We're all Americans why should ethnicity or religious affiliation matter? Fox News is especially bad about this, but lately CNN has been racking up these kinds of articles too.

I see no problem with race. Religion fosters ignorance and disbelief in the only method of determining fact from theory.

Funny you don't mention the millions in bonuses that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac executives just received. That was from tax monies too. Taxes that a majority of the 99% didn't pay.

You know were all paying taxes every time we fill up a vehicles tank or buy certain items. Taxes are not just reflected in what we file and perhaps get back or pay in at the end of the year....

Quit complaining, put your skills out there for others to see even if it is just through friends, if you are good, the word will spread and you will have money flowing your way as long as there is a demand for your work. I know this works because I build computers that suit the needs of people that far surpass the prebuilt pieces of crap at a fraction of the price. When they need troubleshooting or repairs, then guess what, more money. I don't screw with my clients either, if it breaks because I screwed up, then the repair is free obviously.

It was only a matter of time before the black and brown moochers decided to join the white moochers.

OWS has nothing to do with "struggling" and has everything to do with wanting to take from someone else's hard work, effort and subsequent success.

Really? Are you serious? Obviously, you've never had to decide between feeding yourself and making sure you could make it to a dead end job before. The disconnect between the have & have-nots in this country is astounding. Its people who lack humanity that will force desperate people to perform desperate acts just to get the respect they deserve. and FYI, most of the Occupiers don't want a bailout like the big wigs on Wall Street, they just want a level playing field. I guess asking for that is too much. We should just let the working class in this country suffer and disappear while the 1% continue to buy yachts with helicopters on the back of them. Get real.

Obviously jmissel hasn't invested time to understand more about Occupy. If he/she/it did, then the above comment would be retracted. It has nothing to do with taking from someone else. People are concerned about their financial and occupational futures in this country, and find it frustrating that more isn't being done to fix the problem. Wouldn't you be angry if upper bank execs were handed millions in bonuses that came straight from bailout money? You and I both know that doesn't make a bit of sense... now go and make ignorant comments about something that you understand, like the Kardashians.
