By Debra Goldschmidt, CNN In America
(CNN) - In 10th grade English at Los Angeles’ Grover Cleveland High School, Danielle Taklender's students read the book "Luna" by Julie Anne Peters. It's a story about a transgender teen.
Taklender has been teaching the book for seven years without any fanfare or push back. It’s getting noticed now as her school district takes the lead in developing a plan to comply with the first state law mandating lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history and social science curricula. The California law, which takes effect in January, stops short of dictating how schools are to comply and leaves that up to the districts and schools themselves to figure out.
Taklender uses "Luna" to expose students to new vocabulary and different ways of thinking about pronouns. The students discuss gender identity versus sexual orientation, as well as gender roles in literature. Taklender said she teaches this book the same way she teaches every other book.
She says the only negative feedback she has run into was a parent who once requested an alternate assignment after the class finished reading the book.
“No students ever say they changed their sexual orientation because of it,” Taklender said.
The new law, called the California Fair Education Act, also requires schools teach about the contributions of Native Americans, and people with disabilities. It also bans instructional materials that adversely reflect on a person due to their sexual orientation. The requirements are actually an expansion to the education code already in existence, which requires lesson plans to include various ethnic groups.
But it is not without controversy. Some opponents have religious objections, others say it’s part of sex education and belongs at home not in schools. Others simply don’t want this taught to their children.
So far, opposition efforts to repeal the law, which passed last summer, have failed. There are currently at least five initiative measures awaiting review by the attorney general that could make their way on the ballot for next year's election, but it’s too late to stop the law that takes effect next month. If any of the ballot measures pass, they will undo the curriculum that is already in place.
Although individual teachers, like Taklender, have innovated LGBT studies, there aren’t any system-wide models for districts to duplicate, said Jill Marcellus, a spokeswoman for the Gay-Straight Alliance Network.
The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network’s 2009 National School Climate Survey found that about 13% of students were taught in a positive way about lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender people in any of their classes.
Scott Hirschfeld, director of curriculum at the Anti-Defamation League, said kids can go from kindergarten through 12th grade without ever learning about an LGBT person.
“They are really getting an incomplete history,” he said. “The reality is that in most schools this is not a standard part of curriculum.”
In California, many schools have taken a wait-and-see approach, but not the Los Angeles Unified School District. In September, they set a 60-day deadline to develop a new curriculum. This was added to a resolution for affirmation of the district's anti-bullying measures to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
The change isn’t much different than in 2004, when the districts had to update health materials to address gender and sexuality, said Judy Chiasson, program coordinator for Los Angeles Unified School District’s Office of Human Relations, Diversity and Equity. At the time, the district had to create its own material, she said, because there wasn't anything similar out there.
The district has reviewed what is already working in some of its classrooms. Educators have also looked at materials by groups including the Anti-Defamation League, the Southern Poverty Law Center, University of California Los Angeles and University of Southern California. Those materials are the basis of a draft implementation plan for Los Angeles schools that is currently under review by the district Superintendent, a spokeswoman said.
In the meantime, at Downtown Magnets High School in Los Angeles, Daniel Jocz's eleventh grade history students continue to discuss lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues. The subject has been part of Jocz's lesson plans since he started teaching seven years ago. Some days, that means a discussion about language: the negative use of the word 'gay' or using 'guys' to describe women. His students will often compare and contrast the use of these words with racial slurs.
The students have also looked at case studies that compare the 1955 murder of 14-year-old African-American Emmett Till in Mississippi with the 1998 murder of gay Wyoming college student, Matthew Shepard.
"There are parallels between the gay situation and the civil rights movement,” Jocz said. "If you don't include it as part of the narrative, you are ignoring it. You have to acknowledge it.”
Every generation has altered the way history is taught in schools, New York University history and education Professor Jonathan Zimmerman said. In the 1920s, it was the Irish, in the 1950s and 1960s, it was African-Americans and in the 1970s, it was Latinos.
“There was a time when history books only had white guys,” Zimmerman said. “Over time, successive groups fought to have their story become part of the main story.”
Adding lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender studies is no different, he said. But schools must be careful not to just celebrate the group - they need to address tough questions and do some hard thinking. For example, he said, sending soldiers to fight for freedom for others while denying gay freedom in the military.
“We need to think about why we’re including them and what the purpose of these stories is in the first place,” Zimmerman said.
Which is why schools are looking at Taklender’s English class and Jocz’s history class. They are still trying to learn how this generation’s history will be taught.
Taklender and Jocz say they are just doing their jobs.
"Even though I knew it was revolutionary,” Taklender said, “I didn't think it was a big deal."
Why is the contribution of a person from the self-styled LGBT culture any different from that of another person? Why are we teaching our children about how to be different and less about how to get along? People first, sub cultures later. Religion, colour, orientation are secondary characteristics to humanity. When we teach humanity as a principal tenet, everything else should fall into place.
When Solomon died, Israel and Judea were split. Between that time and 70AD, the country was overrun 3 times. Every time for the same reason. The Hebrews chose to not govern themselves according to God's Laws. According to the word and spirit of God's law. We see the same thing today in the US. God uses the enemies of his people to punish his people for disobedience. We have left the Liberals of the past 50 years tell us to NOT vote our faith. We will now pay.
you cant make right wrong or make wrong right
Will these same militant gay agenda types teach about how Adolf Hitler had gay Storm Troopers in his leadership while trying to over throw a democratic society in Germany, or will they that part out?
hey..last night I put my wee-wee in a woman's hoo-hoo. Put that in the history books for the kids.
Can't put fiction in history books, fella
Parents. People. Culture. Peers. Teachers. TV. Film. Theater. Radio. Internet.
These are where people learn to hate or to love. It takes a VILLLAGE to raise a child. Not just a two (or one or three or four) people to raise a child. Parents offer a very limited view on what the world is and how we should interact with it. This new legislation forces students to hear different views. While it may not be the view a parent holds it is still important to expose students to other view points so that our future generations can grow up to be better people. I apprecitate that some of you hold very deeply the bible, but I would like you to realize when the and why the bible was written. Also thinking that a book written 2000 years ago still applies to modern culure (excluding the parts on how to treat others) is absurd. So thank very much for pointing out phrases out of an old that when out of context could mean anything. So thank you.
LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR!! (All of them not just the ones we already like)
**old book and **you already like
California is broke, and this is a classic example of why. Considering schools are failing to produce people with scientific reasoning capabilities, spending money and energy on this relatively low yield project is appalling. People are getting plenty of effective pro gay indoctrination in the media and entertainment industries. We should be spending our precious tax dollars on getting everyone up to speed on the sciences before we produce a generation non engineers and our standard of living goes the way of mexico.
This comment pretty much sums up everything that is wrong with American education. Economic "yield" is a bi-product of education. The point of education is to expand the mind, not the wallet.
In a nationwide test, only 12 percent of America's high school seniors demonstrated proficiency in history. http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/pubs/main2010/2011468.asp#section4
I can't imagine how tacking on LGBT studies and/or other "enrichment" courses will do anything but exacerbate that problem. American students are just becoming dumber, and this isn't helping.
Many of the ignorant comments against this suggest that this new policy demonstrates the need to educate students about the contributions of gay people throughout history. If kids are taught that a certain percentage probably 10% are gay and that sometimes boys fall in love with boys and girls fall in love with girls and boys fall in love with girls and that it's all completely normal, then acceptance will start with the education of the young and bullying will be much less. Prejudice is taught behavior. Kids are completely accepting of everyone when they are very young and if they are taught later that some people are somehow beneath them because of the prejudices of their parents that is learned behavior. Kids are killing themselves because of horrible bullying and hate that is taught by messages that being gay is wrong they receive from their parents or their ministers in evangelical churches and bullies hear these messages and justify their behavior and hate. The key to all is education and the more we know about the world, the better prepared we will be to live in it. Times are changing and we have a choice to either be on the right side of history and progress or on the wrong side of history. A world that accepts and celebrates diversity and acceptance is a world I want to live in.
Thank you! This is absolutly perfectly written.
@Randall Ross it aint normal would you sukk a mans dykkk or let him bootay f**k you, im saying if it's normal according to you, you shoulnt have a problem.
PEOPLE- THIS IS THE NEW MOVEMENT AND GAYS AREN'T AFRAID OF THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE STILL IN THE OLD AGES THINKING WE WILL NOT FIGHT FOR OUR PEACE. HARVEY MILK DID NOT DIE SO THAT HIS NAME COULD BE SHAMED. GET USED TO THIS. FRUIT FLIES PROVED SCIENTIFICALLY THAT GAY PEOPLE ARE REAL AND A LOT OF YOUR FRIENDS ARE TOO SCARED TO COME OUT OF THE CLOSET THEMSELVES.
GO SUKK A DYCK
GO SUKK A DONKEY DYCK
Please stop this stuff. If someone did something historic then it should be there . I guess I need some Irish people in the history books to make my life more meaningful.
I dont understand the Gay movement...First theyre only less than 4% of the population...Its wrong if your religious or if you dont believe, but you know science (biology) its wrong...yet you see them taking over. People see it all the time on TV when it isnt as prevalent as people think...Organizations like GLAAD censor TV shows and comedians etc. they compare their problems to the Civil Rights Movement when things arent as near as bad for them as it was for Blacks in the 20th century (Segregation, Fire Hoses, Dogs, Legal Beatings, Being denied Jobs, Government humiliation). Those people went through alot more than any Gay person goes through today. They try to force their agenda on you by calling you a bigot if you dont fully support them. Well I just wonder whats next. Their arguments are "You cant stop Love" and "You cant stop progress" Well there is something called progress in the wrong direction (Example: Congress ) Well if its just love what about incest or pedophilia or bestiality? How long will it be before those are promoted with the same argument. No one can stop you from being Gay, but please dont force your Agenda on me and my generation (only 16) and be gay like people have for thousands of years
Paul, you are very young and you have yet to mature into the person you will be. There is much about the world you have to learn and things aren't always as simple as they appear when you are 16. You may find some of those dearest to your heart, either today or in the future, are gay. Keep an open mind and an open heart. It will serve you well in your journey.
Newmoon 2, don't just brush off Paul's thoughts because he is only 16 and hasn't "matur[ed] into the person [he] will be." His input is just as important since he and his generation are the ones who are most affected by the law mentioned in the article.
Newmoon is not dismissing Paul's comments, just pointing out that he should keep an open mind and heart. Paul's feelings and beliefs may change many times over the course of his life. The young are often harsh in their judgments, particularly of things which are complicated by the intersections of religion, science, and politics.
@newmoon you sound as if you are trying to turn him so you can have him for your pleasure.
Paul dont let the white liberals turn you, you speak from an adults heart keep speaking what is right and not whats popular.
Oscar Wilde, Alexander the Great, Cole Porter, Elton John, Harvey Milk, Tchaikovsky, Michelangelo... I could go on. Why should we care about LGBT history? Because it is OUR history as human beings. To discount the contributions of these individuals is to diminish ourselves.
Flipper, Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, King Kong, Mr.Ed yep contributed to american history
It's ok to be a pervert. It's ok to molest children. It's ok to force kids to have to be tolerant of sodomites and pedophiles.Jerry Brown truley is a low life piece of crap.He should be impeached.Liberalism sucks.
If your opinion of gay people is that low, then don't be a hypocrite about it: You should never listen to any music written or performed by a gay person. You should never read any literature by or about a gay person. You should never watch a movie or TV show where a gay person is in the cast or crew, or where there is a gay character. You should not avail yourself of any technology or scientific discoveries made by a gay person. That means, Tchaikovsky, Johnny Mathis, Elton John, k.d. lang, Mellissa Etheridge, George Michael, Walt Whitman, Gertrude Stein, Willa Cather, Tennessee Williams, Christopher Isherwood, George Washington Carver, Glee, Bones, Bewitched, Hollywood Squares, Ellen, and countless other people and things, are all off limits to you. Without gay people, your world would be a much poorer place.
ALSO DON'T WEAR ANY DESIGNER CLOTHES....LOL
The Banana Splits, Benji, Felix the Cat, Hong Kong Phooey, the first monkey in space, Jabber Jaw, Scooby-Doo, Astro, Dino, circus animals, yep have all contributed to history even the donkey that carried Jesus in Jeruselum
All the negative and hateful remarks are exactly why GBLT inclusiveness is important in schools.
i got some more hateful remarks, stay tuned, the show must go on
I seriously have a problem with the LGBT movement comparing itself to Latino, African-American, or any other ethnic group that has sought fairness and equality by stating that the movement is the same. Although I agree with fairness and equality, there is a difference between the LGBT and the other ethnic groups. Being LGBT is immoral and contradicts biblical teachings; conversely, being Latino, African-American, etc. is not immoral.
i'm both a racial minority and gay and see perfect parallels between the 2 causes. People today use the same exact arguments against gay marriage, as were used to try to stop interracial marriage. If that isn't a parallel, I don't know what is...
@both then you are FUKKKED UP
I BELIEVE IN IMMIGRATION LAW ENFORCEMENT TO.
I believe in grammar.
I agree that children should be taught about these things from their parents and guardians in a way that prepares them for the outside world and the wars that are waged over this issue. However, the classroom is no place for content like this, just like it's no place for classes about being "straight". The fact that children need to be taught this by a teacher in a classroom is indicative of a widespread failure by parents who need to educate their children about subjects that have no place in state and government.
Adam, Educators cannot rely on parents to educate their children about other cultures and seualities. It would be great if we could. Unfortunately, ignorance is learned behavior. Most of the time, educators are undoing "damage" that is, in fact, learned at home. Staright culture IS taught every day. Anytime a man and woman are shown or represented as a couple in history or any piece of literature, straight culture is being reinforced. Your argument is faulty. That's the like saying there is no need for BET; EVERY other channel on TV might as well be called White Entertainment Television. The best argument for teaching about LGBT culture in school is that knowledge creates understanding and acceptance of things people don't know about. Students who are LGBT in schools will face much less bullying if LGBT culture becomes less of a mystery. This will prevent suicide. This will save lives.
Leslie, if my kids had a liberal, elitist teacher like you, I'd yank 'em out of that class asap! It's teachers like you who annoy me. You truly think that you know best. You are condescending and rude. The kids in your class are NOT YOURS. Why don't you outreach to their parents and get them involved instead of acting like you're so smart. You sound like a lonely, bitter, single lesbian teacher. I bet you're a big NEA supporter, too. Yuck.
So we are not letting the government/educators raise our children with THEIR ideals, not the parents ideals because the parents can't be trusted with their own children? Is this starting to be a socialist country or what?
I am really getting tired of the state and teachers such as yourself that think that you have the right to override the parents ethics and the parents right to pass those ethics to on to our children.
As I said elsewhere in this thread my granddaughter will be educated in a private school in Virginia so that the Marxist in Sacramento and the California Teachers Union cannot get to her with their corrupt values and ideals as what should be acceptable in society!
I sometimes think it is time for those of us who are tired of the arrogance of Sacramento and the Unions who have the politicians in their pockets are going to say we have had enough and rise up in opposition.
Frankly it cannot come fast enough for me – even if it meant outright revolt!
@Leslie so what you are saying that the teacher should overide whatever the child learns at home from the parent, not only is California Fu**kked up, but the educators and people like you need to be fired.
Im glad I stay in Texas and if it ever cane here . I can tell you for a fact there would be very, very, very, very, very few students in the classroom to the point teachers would lose their jobs because their wouldnt be any students to teach.
i have been reading ur coments through out this discison and all i can tell is ur not educated. I went to a "normal" school and i have to agree that LGBT needs to be taught. When i came out about being bi I was ridducaled by the students. However once the students saw that i was not backing down more LGBT students came forward. All people are trying to do is stop people like you who are uneducated and afrade of change tell us what to to or how to live.
I want to thank you for pointing out the main problem with this world. Look at our greatgrandparents. They are racist cuse that is the way they were brought up. As was there children and our parents. It wasnt untell the late 80's that it became less dominate. Now my generation is standing up and saying WE ARE EQUAL. Many of the older generations have not the courage or open mindns to accept this. So THANK YOU. I for one say u are right. It needs to be taught in schools.
@ejssn im very educated college graduate graduated from one of the most pretigious universities in Texas YOU FUUUK WIPE the problem with you white blue eyed liberals you cant speak to you all on a intellectual level because you all are fuuucking delusional and are the dumbest fuuuuckers I have ever encountered in my life. So by.tch go SSSUUKKK YOUR FUUUUCKING BOYFRIENDS DYCK BYTTTCH. READ THIS
For being a collage gad u sure are close minded. Did You know that Texas is one of the leading LGBT states? Also why is it that all you was able to do is try to make fun of a open minded person. My opinion is that You are scared to admit u are LGBT. You might want to add periods in Your sentences as well cuse your reply was all one long run on sentence. As for my boyfriend no thank you. But ill gladly tell my girlfriend hi. Please feel free to reply with more insults cuse i love to see how well You was educated. All you are doing is proving mine and Leslie point. It needs to be taught in schools to help prevent further uneducated people like you.
Does anyone else notice in the classroom picture there is a girl sleeping with her head on her desk??
hahah you beat me to it!!!!
ANYONE SEE WHITE KIDS –OR–BLACK KIDS IN THAT CLASS ROOM ?? ALL HISPANIC KIDS.. WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU ABOUT THE FINANCIAL MESS CALIFORNIA IS IN ?? TAX PAYERS PAYING TO EDUCATE ILLEGALS KIDS..WHEN THEY GET SICK, TAX PAYERS PAY FOR THE HOSPITAL COST TO.. BOY I WANT TO BE AN ILLEGAL.. ALSO HELP WITH COLLEGE TO...MANY FREEBIES FOR ILLEGALS ... I WANT TO BE AN ILLEGAL.
Came up with a good pro-life slogan : "Abortion is so gay"
I too am a lesbian.
so what, you don't see me go around saying I'm straight.... go over yourself...
you are Fu kked up
This is total garbage. Thank God my kids are out of the California public school system. I knew that once gays started demanding certain rights, that they would eventually weasel their way into our children's schools. Are they going to teach the different positions and fun things that gay men like to do to one another, such as tea bagging? But if they taught that, the kids would think tea party patriots, wouldn't they? These public schools, and the teacher's unions, along with the freak who is Jerry Brown, a man who has never had children, are helping to destroy our children, our culture, our God, our families. It's not okay to pray in school, it's not okay to say Merry Christmas, but it's okay to teach hogwash like this LGBT course. My question is, if gays want to be like everyone else, then why do they keep pushing their agenda onto everyone, especially our most vulnerable, our kids. Why don't they just blend in like everyone else, and shut the heck up. What's next to brainwash our public school children?
It's never been our intent to be like everyone else. We've always merely want the 90 to 95 percent of the population that is straight to not persecute us. I'm not sure where California's going with this curriculum but I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with activities like tea bagging. (It's strange how all the straight peoples' minds go "straight" to that stuff, though.)
Yeah I'm sure that's what was said about African-Americans, women, etc. Have another group your afraid of?
As a student with a California public school education, I am appalled by your response. Do you think I am learning about missionary style or any other "positions and fun things" that straight people do? Before you criticize any education, do your research.
@Shayna youre learning to suck a coochie right? wink wink
I guess my response agreeing with you was deemed politically incorrect and not posted. Maybe I should have posted as Winston Smith.
This is why we need awareness because you do not have a clue...luckily those who do not preach hate are more accepting than yourself. We simply want equal rights, not special ones...WAKE UP!
You shut up, go be mildly creepy and awkward somewhere else.
@Gay Parent i feel sorry for your child they will never know how it feels not to be confused.
Parent who is gay (Parent always outranks other labels!), your being gay wouldn't matter in a world where we considered what unites us as a primary goal, then valued our diversity as a secondary goal. Wish you & yours all the very best.
Good lord–do you think your children don't already know about these things? Lots of what you are referring ton as the "fun" gay men have is also very common in the straight bedroom. That's what all of this is about–get out of the bedroom and realize these are PEOPLE>
Well said, Chrissy. Were your comments politically correct for a liberal CNN chat board? Definitely not. But truthful and accurate? YES, absolutely! :)
So when will they bring in the next group of crazyies? Those that love their pets. Or maybe those that love small children... Why not jump right to the end and study Soddom and Gamorrah! It didn't end pretty if I remember!
the next crazies will be Gay men who let their Parakeets live in their AZZZ
Please don't equate the gay experience with the black (or other) experience. Gay people weren't sprayed with fire hoses or attacked by police and their attack dogs. They don't receive harsher punishments for the same crime as their white counterpart. I'm not totally against them marrying, etc (you won't see me picketing for their right to marry though lol). I believe they should enjoy the same rights as everyone else, but I just don't think their experience is wholly the same as that of black people.
they should probably focus on subjects that actually turn into a career
Perv Studies 101
Are you serious? LGBT in school. I understand Black history, Spanish history, but what has gays contributed to our society except to be gay! It does our society no good to begin with. It breaks down the family cell and confuses children. Its a lifestyle that should be kept in your living room not romper room. Shame on your state.
Ellmiller – To understand this phenomenon, you need to go back to the beginning. Back in the 1940s, a group of Jewish intellectuals fled Nazi Germany and came to America where they formed an organization called "The Frankfurt School." This group was highly critical of America, Christianity and Western Civilization in general. They sought to overthrow the existing system and replace it with socialist system.
They developed a winning strategy: Divide America into self-identified "victim groups" – blacks, gays, women, youth, immigrants, etc. Using sustained propaganda, make these groups ANGRY at the white, straight, Christian system. Make them see the system as unfair to their group. And then organize all these "victim groups" together to overthrow the system.
Gay rights, open borders, Affirmative Action, and all forms of "political correctness" can ultimately be traced back to the Frankfurt School. Research it for yourself.
Very interesting bannister. Thanks for the history lesson. Groups like these love to break up the family. I would certainly put the feminist movement in there too, or did you? Weird how a group who escaped the Nazi's, didn't give a hoot about our culture and how America should be respected. As Jews, which they most likely were, they had faced undeniable persecution their whole history, which is so hard for me to understand why Jews are so left wing, to the point of being almost Communistic. These groups, like LGBT, are kind of like fascist's in their own right. It all starts with education, and the most trusting and easiest to lead by the nose are the children. They have no respect for Christianity, families or tradition. They need to just get out of our schools and leave us alone. BTW, it's not about being against gay people per se, I have a couple of nephews who are gay, and I love them very much, it's the agenda that I'm upset about. It will never end if schools and administrators cave in to every demand. These groups like LGBT are fascists.
At last someone has mentioned the "Frankfurt School". Yes the whole goal is to destroy the family unit. That has been achieved if you have noticed. Why? Who will stand up for you? Your family. Who will teach you knowledge and wisdom? Family. Remove the family and the gov't has direct access to you. Giving you their version of morality. Morality that serves the state of course. This left vs right thing is a hoax. The goal is Orwellean, and Brave New World folks.
You're a Nazi. Way to take a philosophical movement and equate it to a New World Order, I hope you and your skinheaded twitter followers are all very happy in Magical White Jesus Land where everything is christian, male-dominated, and Anglo-centric.
No kidding, couldnt agree more. LGBT studdies??? You have to be kidding me. The only way they should be studying it is for what it is, a mental disorder.
Those of you who keep arguing that gay history or history of ethnic minorities or religious minorities is unnecessary because they are already included in general historical studies are kidding yourselves. Most of you are closet bigots who don't want to admit that you're just upset about something you dislike being discussed in public schools. Yes, you're right, it is not really productive to single out special types of history, but you are ignoring the fact that history and literature classes leave out a lot of facts about people because those people were marginalized in their own time and thus not included in the general historical record. I've taught in public schools in CA, and believe me, there is a lot of prejudice. And I'm not talking about in the curriculum (of course CA teachers and school districts are not preaching bigotry, their communities are too diverse to stand for it), but the students are completely unaware of the multicultural history of their nation and their world. To say that these subjects don't need to be addressed, at least until our students are informed enough to stop distrusting, bullying, and judging each other, is just a way of supporting the ignorant views of a hateful minority who has you convinced that everything is fine.
The law requires a certain amount of time spent on LGBT topics each year. My question is: given that the curriculum is full now, what topics are being removed to make time for this? CA schools already test poorly in academic fundamentals such as mathmatics and science. So what are we cutting back on to make room for this? Let's get our priorities straight!
i like the comments from Chip. Talk individual contributions, whats this deal with LGBT studies ? Its school, not psychology major. I learned Shakespeare, Gallileo, Newton, Gandhi, Joan of Arc for what they supposedly did, not whether they crossdressed or not. Focus on science and writing.
Free will is good, but dont go overboard.
These students looks so excited about it!
another good reason for cailfornia to fall into the sea. ...and all the qu33rs with it!
A Masters in LGBT. Yea boy, that sounds like another person in the unemployment line.
Excellent! This is a great way to teach diversity, and perhaps work toward eliminating bullying! Way to Go CA!!!
Wait no white kids in the school picture ? It's the Mexifornia education system.
I have no issue with the content proposed being taught in schools. However, I foresee many issues if they do not make this an elective.
Great, our students couldn't balance a checkbook to save their life, but oh-boy do they know about S-E-X!
People who compare the plight of black people to gay people have it twisted. First of all, if i walk into a room with dark skin and an afro, you are going to KNOW I am black. Black people were either completely left out of history books, or displayed as cattle. On the other hand, gay people have ALWAYS been in history books we just didn't know they were gay. And why should we??? What does their gay lifestyle have to do with anything? Who cares!! I don't want my children "experts" on the gay lifestyle. It is so irrelevant. They do not need to learn that in school. Trust me, the media is already teaching them enough! I don't even want to know about it and I'm grown. No one needs to know what other people are doing behind closed doors. O and let's get something else straight. Martin Luther King was not referring to gay people in his speeches. Don't kid yourselves....
I second the motion.
Do the schools teach about Bradley Manning and his contributions as a traitor? Or do they have to leave out the fact that this guy is gay? I know, schools can only teach that a person is gay if his contribution was good. If he did something horrible, the fact that he was gay won't be allowed out. I wonder what would have been taught if Hitler was gay?
Keep up the great work! Hate Free Zone!
Many thanks for making the effort to talk about this, I feel strongly about this and enjoy learning a great deal more on this subject. If feasible, as you gain expertise, would you mind updating your website with a great deal more details? It's extremely useful for me.
The gay curriculum is a made up curriculum, designed by scabby little bureaucrats who are unqualified to hold a real job in the world but instead leech off the American public with nonsense like this.
1 in 4 kids in this country are going hungry, – and we get this crap!
Teacher, "And now kids, we're going to learn about gay people."
Little Johnny, "And I have to come to school for this BS!"
Honestly I think this is a non-issue. A good teacher is going to address the social issues of our day. I think it's important teachers stay neutral and present both sides of the issue. Now, comparing Gay rights to the Civil Rights fight? Let's not be ridiculous.
"don we now our gay apparel....."
Unbelievable!!! You can't salute the Flag of the United States in class, but you can teach the kids about this?
I went to public school in Massachusetts (a very liberal state), and we said the pledge of allegiance every morning. We also talked about gay people sometimes. I'm not really sure where your facts are coming from. (Headlines on the Drudge Report aren't a great source).
Also coming from a Massachusetts school, and we did discuss gay people as well, just like straight and other normal people when we talked about history or English or famous scientists. We didn't branch them into their own group for some collective circle jerk and isolate them even more then others.
After seeing programs like this being mandated by the state, illegal aliens getting free tuition at California Collegs, I am glad that there was a mid=year budget shortfall in the State of California. It is estimated that approximately 1 Billion will have to be cut from the state education budget.
Hopefully this will be one of the programs that will have to be cut.
Don't worry – they will cut out reading, writing and math before this 'vital' topic...oh, and of course leave bilingual ed in place...
Every person alive is the result of the seed of a man and the egg of a woman coming together, even those to whom that idea doesn't come naturally. I am all for having people who claimed to be gay tauted in history books for their positive (or negative) achievements. There should be no favoritism there. It does seem, however, that people are getting the laws at work here confused with promoting a certain lifestyle that their brothers and sisters cannot, for ethical reasons, embrace. It seems to me that the true bigots are those who call others such for not embracing their personal views.
These comments here are absolutely ridiculous and go far off the topic of which is being discussed here. LGBT history is as much part of American history, as well as western civilization since the creation of mankind. To exclude a minority, such as the LGBT community, would be discrimination of a certain group of people. Now whether the beliefs of this community being right or wrong should be left out? Yes, they should. However, the community should be recognized for its progress in the civil rights movement, as well as the hate they have received over the years from their neighbors.
And to leave this up to the parents at home, this would be absurd! Parents would be teaching mostly from ignorance, in an area of where they have little knowledge, to push their beliefs and bigotry onto their children, so they, too, can form the same hatred based off of ignorance. Lets leave the education to the professionals who have earned their degree based on their education, not beliefs!
BS in the extreme.
Yeah Dude whatever makes you feel better. Going through life delusional isn't such a bad plight.
I am in no way delusion, for I see what is out there. This is not a figment of my, or your, imagination. I see people for who they are. Lets not judge people for who they love, but instead by the content of their character.
Now this itself doesn't negate the fact that our children are living in a community where there exist a minority consisted of LGBT individuals, or of black individuals, hispanic individuals, and individuals of various decents/religions. Our schools should inform and educate the students of who/what is in the real world, regardless of whether or not you choose to recognize these people as human beings. The LGBT issues have been on the forefront of politics for some time now, and to not teach the children of their history, would only be hurting them.
I am simply amazing on the lack brain power most of the people posting on here have. I find it very funny that most of you think your kids will catch becoming gay like it is contagious. I feel sorry for you kids, and I truely hope you have a gay child one day so you can see the hate in the world and this country towards them just because of people like you raising stupid kids.
Sorry, simply "amazed"^^^
How are you going to try and preach patience and understanding, and follow that up with "I hope you have a gay kid" like it's some kind of curse? Soap Box much?
Wow Jason. Not showing much tolerance towards people who dont agree with you......How ironic.
Why not just focus and teach the contributions of anyone. Having no regard for "labels". Isn't that the best approach, then there is no need for such asinine laws and big brother watching and directing our every move.
teach what needs to be taught in schools. teach about the contributions and abilities of those who came before. forget the labels. forget all of them.
by the way, i'm gay.
Well, nobody's perfect!
Out of curiosity, when we look at bullying and murder of LGBT students as a REASON to MANDATE it in schools, why not look at everything else that out scores those deaths (not to minimize murder, but making a point here). How about teaching HISTORY OF PEDESTRIAN / BICYCLING (many more deaths there), SCIENCE OF COUGAR SURVIVAL (more deaths here by cougars in CA than any other), MATH OF CRANK OVERDOSE (yep, California is the creator of CRANK. Surprised? More deaths here by far).
MarkCali, the difference is that bicycle and cougar deaths/injuries are typically not intentional (unlike bullying). And yes there are classes that discuss (warn against) the health consequences of drugs (including 'crank').
Sending my children to private schools...Enough of California educational system of brainwashing!
Good, classes are too big anyway. We don't need bigots in our schools anyway.
SHOULD AMERICANS TAX PAYERS BE FORCE TO EDUCATE KIDS OF ILLEGALS WITH THEIR TAX MONEY ? ?? WHAT IS NEXT ??? SHOULD TAX PAYERS PAY FOR THEM TO WHEN THEY GO OUT TO EAT IN A RESTAURANT ??
So true! It's best that we have choices to where to send our children for education. This can wait until college days if the student decides to learn more on this subject. Let's stick to basic fundamentals first.
The great thing about private schools is that you can find one that is just as bigoted as you are. And the great thing about public education is we can rely on it to try to address inequalities created by bigots!
It is estimated that the LGBT community makes up 10 %, if not more, of the overall community. To send your kids to a private school, just to free them from what you call 'brainwashing' is silly. People are still there, meaning aproximately 10% of those ther, will also be part of the LGBT community. Christian, Catholic or whatever type of private school you choose, they will still be getting 'brainwashed', as you call it, by their peers. The LGBT community is not going anywhere, and your kids will learn about it no matter what school you send them to. Now the method of which they learn it, of course, is up to you. Teach them HATE or teach them ACCEPTANCE of all, as Jesus Christ, our savior would do? You choose!
About twice a year I walk the halss of my kids school and generally leave in a state of utter shock. The LGBT crew and these kids parents (among others) are doing a huge disservice to our youth. These kids are are under the expecatation that they can dress, body art and behave in almost any (non-violent) way imagineable and have some sort of right not to be ridiculed or bullied.
I am no fan of bullying, but come on what are these kids going to do when school ends? There are no anti-bullying rules in the real world. We are setting these kids up for failure.
Gay, straight, black, white, green makes no diferance. People ought to make the history books based on their contributions to history. If that means contributions to civil rights then that's great. I agree that an extensive amount of time is spent on this LGBT stuff. Accepting LGBT people into our culture shouldn't require a "seporite but equal" amount of class time for the teaching of it. A well rounded education may lead to an open minded understanding to those who are different then ourselves. This dogmatic approach isn't doing anyone any good. It'd be better to teach a man to fish, so to speak. Let the preasures of our changing social climate do the work and let's not be exclusionary in our persuits of a more unified future.
Funny thing is, people like you use to say the same about teaching black history in public schools. People like you were saying the same things about allowing black kids to go to school with white kids. People like you use to say women can't vote. Your kids aren't going to turn gay just because they learn that a few famous people throughout history were gay. Get a grip, set a better example instead of being a bigot.
This is exactly why I will be sending my child to a narrow-minded private school – so he can actually have a chance of professional success in life. I'll continue to mold his wonderful, little compassionate self at home. Get real CA...complete waste of academic time.
The next thing you know they will be telling children MLK Jr. was a black man. *gasp*
Sorry Jason, don't try the race card with the gay card..........the agendas are different and the last thing I want is Rosie O'Donnell teaching little girls her agenda NICE TRY though, but take it back to San Francisco
What exactly is this so called "agenda" gay people have against you? Bigots need to leave the USA, there is no room for you here any longer, it is 2011 almost 2012. Move to Iran if you hate so many other people not like you.
Well said Tom. Enough of this silliness!!!!! There is a lot more out there students can learn about for the time being.
I'm black. Don't compare your choice in partner to my skin color. That will never fly.
Alyssa, being born black is not a choice. Neither is being born gay.
When can we start having white-only curriculum?
Now you know that will never happen. It's against the rules for white people to be proud. They must all live in shame.
Why can they have LGBT studies and ban classes on religious history?
You can have a history of religions class. You can't have a "this is Christianity" class. Humans have invented ten thousand gods. Teaching that yours is the only one is not going to cut it.
apparently you didn't read the Sodom and Gomorrah(SP) section of the bible........SALTY
Having taught in Ca. Public School System, count on each school required to have a "Gay (not happy) Parade" on campus.
It will also come down that they will be required to have glt come to speak to students on their behalf. Glad I am O U T.
so apparently then 4th grade english wasn't a favorite subject of yours either? ass is AN exit not and exit...where in THE bible not an bible...i don't care if YOU'RE gay not you gay.....and finally its problems not promblems...yay spelling.
it's good to know that as long as the entire state's school system meets YOUR approval then we are good to go...i hate to tell you but since this is the real world you are bound to run into a ton of things you don't like but have to put up with anyways...will you always like all your bosses and/or coworkers? will you always like your neighbors? if you dont are you just going to kill them off? the world doesn't revolve around you sorry to say.
its good to know that you'll have to sit on a donut for the rest of your life, and you can make fun of my spelling.
Who said the world revolved around me i was just stating facts.
Just adding more crap in the school systems that we will never use and don't care about
you cant me call a pig a duck no matter how you legislate and implement the law to do so
American students are falling behind every nation in the world on every subject...Yet we will waste more class time on this BS. America is doomed.
Maybe we have to waste our time on this stuff because America never had an enlightenment. Most of the EU countries have far better tolerance, allow gay marraige, have mostly equal gay rights, and it's not a problem for two men to walk down the street hand in hand. Since they have gotten past this ignorance, they can spend their time on things that actually matter.
so educating kids on more topics is a waste of school time...that's funny considering that the capabilities for students to currently get ahead in the subjects that have been there for ages are available, they just need to take advantage of such. it's good to hear an "angry dad" is upset for something that needs no anger for.
sure he has something to be angry about....he doesn't want his kids and others to be subjected to the GAY agenda unitl they are old enough to deal with it.........that's the majority....SORRY
Oh, I don't know why we waste time educating children on how to deal with all the types of people they will encounter in their lives. That's so 90's, let's just tell all the kids to sit down and shut up and act "normal." That works so well.
American students are falling behind because Republicans are draining money from the schools to pad the pockets of their corporate buddies (and themselves). Teachers should be the highest paid class of workers not the lowest.
Throwing more money at education does not improve test scores. It just adds to the bloat of school administration.
Blame it on Bush
I went to one of the top-testing high schools in the US. I test in the top percentile (like 1%) and I steal all your jobs. (yep I'm an immigrant raised here.) In high school we did almost all American history on 1950s and beyond, focusing on racial struggles, vietnam war protests, for some reason side-stepping gay history (but I attribute that to our prof just not being knowledgeable in that issue). I think one of my essay assignments was to write on how hippie music changed history, and we pulled it off to be a pretty legit academic work. In history class we discussed math, in bio we talked about political history (And the Band Played On, Tuskegee trials, all good stuff), in chem we did mind and logic games.
Believe me, it's not the LGBT curriculum that's bringing down the US school system, it's people who are not compassionate about their topic trying to fake it at a blackboard to kids who are too tired from partying all night to care.
I forgot to mention I got a 5 in the AP tests on chem, bio, calculus, economics, and physics (and most of my classmates tested higher on even more tests) so I would say alternative education prepared me pretty well. If you actually get LGBT people who really care for the cause to teach the subject, I think the kids will come out brilliant, self-confident, and motivated to do great things (that probably have nothing to do with the LGBT cause, but that really doesn't matter so much.)
So much history out there! And they pick something like this. Just like Hollywood, they are running out of ideas.
Parents need to stop being so ignorant..teachers are not educating your child on something they are not aware of themselves..music, TV, social media has already taught them about the LGBT community..if you don't want your children to learn about the LGBT community then lock them up in a cave because we live in a society where knowledge is just a click away
You just answered the argument, they already are aware and have outside methods. So why put special focus and leave out the time and efforts that maybe should be put toward catching us up to the rest of the world in education such as math, science, etc?!
One problem with the science angle is that the religious right (oxymoron) doesn't want real science taught in school.
We also need our kids exposed to the great things LGBT folks do in math, science, politics, the arts, etc., in order to counter the vile drivel folks like Perry spew in there political ads and speeches.
Exactly! My teens know LGBT teens and are friends with them too. I raised my kids to love whom ever they love.
A friend is a friend regardless of that. But schools are already failing what they teach now. How can this work? With out taking away time from other studies?
because students have the availabilities and capabilities to get ahead if they took the time to in at least most cases? yes there are some areas and schools that do not have as much of that particularly right on hand but its there regardless. ive seen people come from slum areas or schools and have excelled in studies. its because a good number of kids either feel peer-pressured into not wanting to excel in school and also the fact that there are a small number that don't care. if it wasnt for those then there would be more success. its not all the schools fault itself its more on the students themselves.
Glad I am not teaching any longer. Public schools have become even a greater joke! Let the hits come, I do not care.
Hey fool, where else can students learn to walk, sag and fondle their meat all at the same time.
Certainly not from you.
Oh Jose, seems like your education was very limited. Grab a book and read it. Learn something.
spot on yannies
As a parent, I refuse to allow my daughter to be taught such "ethics". And, as a parent, it's my responsibility to make sure she is taught our family values and raise her in the way we choose, not some random strangers' opinionated views on what is "necessary" in a public schools. The schools are shoddy anymore, anyway. This is the last straw. We've already decided to take her out after Christmas break and homeschool her. And we're one of about 12 in her grade to already have decision this in place.
As a former teacher for 34 years, your rights no longer mean one thing. Pull your child and home school. The job of the public school is not to facilitate parenting. You are the parent, not the Public Schools of America.
It seems California believes it is...
Yes its not their job, but they seem to be taking it on to teach it.
no we don't the MAJORITY does not!!!!!!!!! See the AGENDA....too bad, gonna fail
so its funny because its not the schools job to teach students from a particular area of the country about the whole of the country and world? kind of a moot point dont you think? if the point of going to school isn't to learn about things all around the world and country then why are there still schools in place? lets cancel them all and use them as storage.
Yep. That will do it. Pull her out of school and just keep adding to the ignorance America is so well known for. It is so silly that these people let fear run their lives. LGBT people all everywhere and will continue to be so. Your ignorance will not change that. It's time that backward Americans such as you learn about the contributions LGBT persons have made to this country.
yes, she is missing out on all that SF has to offer gays.........meth addiction HIV etc.
Oh yeah, and you can put HIV/AIDS at the top of the LGBT list! : (
Angry Parent –
I agree with you, and am thankful that I do not live in CA. However, how you are planning to handle upper level science and math courses? And is anything being done to help those that would like to pull their kids out but may not be able to afford textbooks?
US is cramming the curriculum with worthless agenda while the rest of the world laughs.
Hey fool, Sandusky Studies 101 is a very important training course.
I see.... like you guys learning how to build a better bomb? See what blanket prejudice can make you feel like? Not all Islamic people build bombs and not all LGBT people are bad. Grow up!
So true. Focus on the math and language scores and maybe we wouldn't have a bunch of whining young adults sitting in parks and working for "equality" by not working.
These lessons must be enforced by law because of all the ignorant and uncultured people who live in this state – people who have never seen past their front doors, never travelled past their local shopping malls, never experienced the real world or had any friends outside of their own inbred families. These kind of people hold back American from becoming a fair and humane country where people are truly free and equal.
Believe me prime time T.V. exposes anyone who watcehs to the LGBT agenda.
i hate to break the news to ya....but thats the whole country really...(as far as the whole not seeing past their own front doors and such) that's everywhere not just Cali.
Public education in the US is dismal in comparison to the rest of the world, and we are wasting our taxes on teacher time and resources on this worthless agenda. The US is behind Europe, soon to fall behind Mexico.
They have to spend money on programmes like this to "catch up" with the rest of the world. You do not find this type of discrimination in other sophisticated countries (like in Europe). America is far behind in human rights.
I am guessing you have never been outside your backwoods town? Europe and the rest of the world have the same thing but dont feel the need to focus on special rights and education for it. They put their efforts toward the sciences, math, medicine, etc. The Nazi's, skinheads, Islam, and many other Europe, Middle East, and Asia cultural areas have just as much intolerance, but don't feel the need to make a special case out of it.
Here's the thing, regardless of your views. Gay people exist. Minorities exist. Christians and Muslims and Buddhists and Mormans exist. Human history includes all of these things. Current events contain all of these things. Therefore they need to be covered in school. Wanting to selectively censor these topics is inappropriate and damaging to children's knowledge, world view and critical thinking skills. Of course things need to be taught fairly and objectively, with proper oversight. But this fantasy that there are liberal teachers trying to convert children into being gay or Muslim or coloring their skin green, is so silly and disconnected from reality that it would be funny if it wasn't so tragic. It's also totally counter the typical arguments. Being gay is not a disease and is not contagious. If you think that a teacher has more influence over your child than you do, then you are a crappy parent and need to be much more involved in your child's daily life.
This is a prime example of how our elected officials react. It's one of the reasons why the education of our children is failing and other countries education has surpassed our own. We have dumbed down our education system so much tghat we are graduating students from high school that are not prepared for college! ALl minorities are important, but not at the expense of the whole!
@Tristan M – the whole mindset of minorities is going away quickly. There is no majority, or at least not for very long. White middle class kids in many cities are already the minority. An education based upon inclusion, acceptance and at the very least tolerance is beneficial to everyone, including white middle class Christian kids, because tehy will be protected in the same when in about 10-15 years from now, they will likely not be the majority in any given class room.
not a disease and not contagous, true, but also not a healthy lifestyle.
@lalos, in your opinion. If 10% of these kids are gay, which most statistics put it between 5-15% , The need to learn about it, how to be healthy, while the other 80-90% of kids need to learn tolerance. How could that be bad?
Csmallfield, did you go to school? Human beings have agendas whether they acknowledge them or not. Those given power and authority have more overt agendas. All teachers have agendas (I was a middle school math teacher). I have been taught by those with agendas, reprimanded by those with agendas. To say that schools don't have agendas is ignorant.
The state controls what is forced down your child's throat. They want to push for LGBT education to expose your child to that lifestyle. Regardless of the reason, that is an agenda. The agenda is being put in place to UNDO what children are learning at home (mostly intolerant ideas), and teach them something different.
Whether you believe this action is right or wrong, you have to see it for what it is... a LGBT agenda.
hey 'Wow', how do you think Muslims and Wiccans and Hindus feel? Try to think of the world outside your tiny christian bubble.
That picture with the headline says it all. THIS is America? Stand Strong in the face of peril...and Pray.
This is what happens when we keep voting for people like Jerry Brown, Barbra Boxer, and Dianne Feinstein. These three are all controlled by the gay lobbyists in California. Get rid of them, and chaotic laws like this would never exist.
Now I didn't know that these classes are to be out in as something you have to pass in order to graduate , These classes should be and elective , not forced into , Me personally could care if your gay or straight . I just don't choose to hang out with a gay person . This also isn't a subject that should be forced to go to ! It won't help you to get a job nor will it help you in understand what gays go through . I just know that if I was still in school I would have to want to know not forced because feelings are getting hurt . And if it would stop me from graduating I would take the school to court . Now if this is supposed to help the gay kids to understand about themselves then I don't have a problem but to force everyone into this class is just not right !!
SPOT ON!!!!!!!!! no one has done more to harm the state than Boxer, Pelosi and BROWN
You know what's really funny to me? LGBT "history" isn't going to be history for most people not in high school today. I read the name Emmett Till and the only thing I could think of is "wait, that's not history, that's current events!" It's interesting to see how far LGBT has gone in our lifetime. I look forward to one day telling my kids what it was like in the world before people accepted gays.
If you want some Gay history look up STONEWALL.
1969 is still pretty recent, but your point does illustrate for me the need for some formalized LGBT history. I spent a ton of high school time learning about black activists, black struggles, protests, triumphs, catastrophes, etc., which no one ever carped that it was too politically driven. I do feel like something's weird when our class spent an entire month studying the 1960s-1970s but never really talked about stonewall.
Though our bio teacher totally had "And the Band Marched On" as required reading (Illinois), so, not all hope is lost.
I don't see how the above comment is 'passing judgement'. Did you read the post or were you just knee-jerk reacting to the work "Christian", the way you condemn others for reacting to the word "gay"
Teaching LGBT history makes as much sense as teaching left handed history. You shouldn't favor someone's historical contributions just because they have a genetic predisposition to act in a certain way (like using their left hand). The Christian church did persecute left handed people as well, so the two traits are very similar both genetically and in terms of persecution. Just like we shouldn't teach the history of left handed people, we really shouldn't bother teaching LGBT history, we should just teach plain old history. I honestly care as much if a person is LGBT as I do whether they are left handed, and reading LGBT history seems to make as much sense as reading left handed history to me.
There is no proof that being gay is genetic. I have identical twin cousins. One is gay, one is straight. So much for that theory.
if a identical twin is gay, their other twin is 52% likely to be gay, as opposed to the relatively low likelihood of a random single-born baby being gay. So the likelihood of a twin being gay is VERY high in comparison. Your (VRage13) cousin was just in the 48% I guess.
Also, the more sons a mother has, the likelihood of each additional son being gay increases 30%. So the youngest boy in a family of 7 boys has a very high chance of being gay. Genetic/Hereditary and Congenital do not mean the same thing.
Next our schools will be teaching about pedaphiles, polygamists (referring to you Utah), and then take a detour to the school of Jihad.
Why do we need to be socially accepting/understanding to everything? If you want to be LGBT, go for it. I really don't care how the LGBT live but keep it well outside the pre-college curriculum when children don't have a say in whether they want to hear it. That is unless the LGBT have a plan for creating a nation full of donkeys.
Thank you Daniel Jocz for enlightening me with your great wisdom.
"There are parallels between the gay situation and the civil rights movement,” Jocz said. "If you don't include it as part of the narrative, you are ignoring it. You have to acknowledge it.”
Can I spot the LGBT person a mile away without that person speaking one word and delegating him to some second rate treatment? I can with the Blacks, Hispanics and Asians easily.
I can see how they are parallel meaning that the two never meet. It just veers off in to infinity. But Jocz was probably to busy shaking his booty during coming out day to ever realize this. Get a clue and get a life. Follow the cues of the Jehovah witness' and the Mormons who go door to door asking first before displaying their rant.
is a pedaphile someone who likes feet?
This is a horrible idea. We should never teach that gays are as valuable to society as straight people are. And, while we are at it, we need to quit teaching that minorities are valuable. Ooh, women too! All of that is just a bad idea. Let's leave the indoctrination to the parents...
This is for CNN: The term "evangelicals idiots" by ryan are not appropiate for posting. Why do you allow it?
yah, its way less offensive telling people they are going to burn in hell for all eternity
only if they choose to,
Isn't it the parent's job to teach their children about perverts? Why would you want the government to establish your child's sense of morality. Does this mean that with this new curriculum they will have to burn the books that don't measure up? And what will the punishment be if a child does not want to attend these conditioning classes? Will his/her family be put on a list? Will there be home inspections to make sure families are in compliance? Is there a new government agency to deal with these new programs? Has a Czar been appointed, yet? I think I would pull my child out of such a program. I don't think it's necessary for children to be indoctrinated with ideas that go against my moral values.
Leave it to the Granola State, full of fruits and nuts.
Hey, I remember you from High School – you are Shiela the stupid pig, right ?
This is ridiculous. California is ranked 46th in the country for education, and an education mandate was made for THIS?! How about a mandate for better education in general. Sure knowledge of the LGBT community in history is somewhat important, but when you're one of the worst states for education, the focus should be on other things. Knowledge of the LGBT community isn't going to make my kids smarter, or better prepare them for a job.
Sheila you don't know what you're talking about. You're a dumb American that just judges people and hates on everyone for fairy tale reasons.
Don't be silly, your children can't be turned gay. If your child is gay, they were born that way. People need to learn that gay people have contributed to society just like straight people, black people, Asian people, ect. And that they are not freaks of nature. If it changes one kids mind about killing themselves or stops one bully from picking on someone for the sole reason of being gay, it is totally worth it.
One day this will be in every school, just like black history. People were freaking out when that went mainstream too, but everything ended up okay. Stop thinking your 10th graders are going to turn gay or want to sleep with a certain someone just because they learn Alexander the Great was gay.
Because they are going to teach kids that gay people have contributed to society? You are a nut, please leave this great country.
Yes, you "chose" to be Christian. You aren't innately Christian; you weren't born Christian. You "chose to live that way."
And by the way, Christians are all over the history books. To say that Christians are somehow denied their historical dues, or are persecuted in any way, is absolutely laughable.
amazing, my previous comment is being reviewed. some people have no sense of humor but claim to be gay. i will not be back to this discussion and i'm sorry you will miss my humorous anecdotes, so read my books.
It is mind boggling to me that in this day and age there are still those who demand to teach hate and ignorance over understanding and compassion. These are the same arguments that were being slung around when women wanted to be treated as equals and persons of color wanted to be treated as human beings. If you don't like what the school is teaching, pull your kid out. There are plenty of private, faith-based schools that will teach ignorance to your kids. Can't afford private school? There's always home school.
If you are afraid your kid is going to "turn gay" because they are taught to acknowledge the contributions made by persons who happen to be gay or transgendered, then I hate to break it to you, but the problem isn't with your kids OR the school. It starts and ends with you.
You said it. They grow up to be dumb, vicious hypocrites without having the smarts to even know what it means. Sadly, they also vote and breed, spreading the ignorance, fear, and hatred for decades more.
You are such a dumb American lol. No wonder everyone thinks we're stupid.
This country is so dammmmed ridiculous anymore. Let's include fat people, anorexics, blondes, hermits, and people with allergies to foods and weather. RIDICULOUS. Anal America.
Umm, they do teach that. Your kids will be fine, stop freaking out.
They already include those, as well as black and Hispanic history and now gay history, get use to it.
There are already gays who fall under the black and latino category. You argue as if there are no gay blacks or latinos so gays need to be recognized with them . Sorry but you aren't making any sense.
no such thing as hispanic history that exsist only in places like Mexico, Central America, South America, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic, there is 400 years of black history which started in Jamestown. No other minority has contributed more tha Africam-Americans PERIOD.
I believe everyone deserves love and respect but to mandate things like this in the schools is just plain wrong.
Mandate what, exactly? Those contributions made by persons not be eliminated from lesson plans because they were made by someone who happened to be gay or transgendered?
Who else should we hide from history, then?
They're setting one group apart from the others. Didn't you read the article?
Btw – they weren't removed from the history books – stop lying. It just didn't emphasize what they did in the bedroom. Get over it and stop making crap up.
Only the mental disturbed deny others their basic human rights.
True, it is so much better to dunk it in an orifice that serves as a petri dish for bacteria and yeast and pours out blood on a monthly basis.
Not a petri dish for bacteria and yeast if you stay away from sinful infected men !
You are neither wise nor educated. You are just a deviant. Poor you.
This country is sick.
Agreed. We're changing what's traditionally been "American" by minority groups. Stop imposing your belief system on our children. They can decide their values when they are adults. No integrity left in this country.
Aww...the gay agenda coming to a school near you.
Hallelujah! The GLBT agenda is equal rights for something no one choses. These are your fellow human beings Victoria; you should respect them as such.
Having this drilled into your kid's head by liberals regardless of parents' wishes...where's the respect there? So self-righteous. It's only disrespect if it's against your wishes, eh?
Woodrow ..... Really? You believe that being GLBT is a choice? Then I guess you could chose some night to make the switch? Do you really really believe that?
they are children for God's sake, do not be a fool
Oh great! Let's all just wear stilettoes pretend nothing is wrong with the picture and simply sing "all you need is love." No wonder we get hit in the face and wonder why.
Hmmmmmm....the "gay agenda".......let's see, I believe they are advocating being legally permitted to live in a monogamous, loving relationship; be allowed to raise biological and adopted children in a loving accepting household; and be allowed to be productive in the workforce without fear of discrimination. What a avant guard agenda! Scandalous! The scoundrels!
I know, Victoria! First it was women, pushing their agenda of equality. Then blacks, wanting freedom and to be treated like human beings! What's next? I mean, who are we going to take a dump on to make us feel better about our own meaningless lives if they take gays away?
Victoria, I concur. Teach history in terms of significant/impactful events on the greater society and the key people involved. You don't teach history by picking people with, for example, six digits on each limb and try to reach for things that might have some historical significance involving those people.
And people like YOU, make us Christians sick.
Doug, where did he say it was a choice!?!?
The more you slience me the stronger you allow me to get...
N E V E R V O T E D E M O C R A T A G A I N !!!
If you vote Republican just for this one issue.... then you not only vote against equal rights but against your own self-interest. Unless of course you are a large corporation or part of the 1%.
Vote Democrat if you want Iran to develop an atomic bomb and supply it to terrorist to detonate in the US or on our allies.
I stopped a long time ago. They're ideas are getting more and more twisted every minute. I know it's almost the year 2012 but these folks continue with pure nonsense. I don't know if Republicans are any better but they seem to be down to earth a bit more. Happy Election Year!
Wow. Looks like the forum mods got rid of half of the interesting posts here. Seems a pity.
