Gay marriage comes to Archie's Riverdale

Wedding bells to ring for Archie Comics' gay character

By Stephanie Siek, CNN

(CNN) - One of Archie Comics' archetypal all-American teens is getting married – and it isn't to girl-next-door Betty Cooper or scheming sophisticate Veronica Lodge.

A year after introducing Riverdale’s first gay character, Kevin Keller, Archie Comics is showing his marriage to an African-American physical therapist named Clay Walker. The issue with their wedding, "Life with Archie #16," debuts at comic book stores January 4 and newsstands January 10.

It's part of a series that imagines the gang five or six years after graduation, with two alternate timelines - one in which Archie married Betty, another in which he married Veronica. Kevin's wedding appears as part of a story showing Archie and Betty's married life.

Kevin Keller is shown to have followed in his Army father's footsteps - in images released to CNN, readers learn that he served in the military and was injured while serving in Iraq. He meets Dr. Clay Walker while in a hospital’s rehabilitation unit.

Clay helps Kevin regain his ability to walk, and the two become friends. But it's not until a chance meeting in an airport that they start dating.

Archie Comics CEO Jonathan Goldwater said it's part of a concerted effort to make Archie's universe mirror the diversity and complexity that today's readers encounter in their lives. Archie's first comic book appearance was in 1941, and the core "gang" of Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica had, for the most part, changed only cosmetically.

"Riverdale, Archie and the gang are set in high school, and we ran a risk, unless we reflect what's going on with kids today in the real world, of becoming irrelevant," said Goldwater, the son of Archie creator John L. Goldwater.

Archie is far from the first comic book to introduce a gay character - gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender characters have played leading roles in superhero and alternative genres for two decades. The Comics Code Authority, an industry body, explicitly banned any mention of homosexuality in comics until 1989, although writers sometimes hinted at a character’s sexuality. LGBT readers often identified with superheroes’ double lives and feelings of being somehow different.

But Riverdale is still a pop culture symbol for all things wholesome, moderate and Midwestern, and Kevin Keller's success seem to indicate that readers think he fits right in.

Goldwater said the creation of Riverdale High's first gay student resulted in only seven canceled subscriptions, and "hundreds and hundreds" of new ones. Archie Comics sold out of Kevin's four-issue miniseries. Kevin is also getting his own title, published every other month, in February. Creator Dan Parent said dating will be a major part of his storyline - as it is in every Archie character’s narrative.

"And of course it won’t be as smooth as you think it will be, because it’s an Archie comic," Parent said. "The story really revolves more around Kevin preparing for the date, and the influence of the gang helping him in going on his date."

Part of the reason Kevin has proven so popular may be the fact that his sexuality is handled just like that of the heterosexual characters – as part of their storyline, not a gimmick.

"Sexuality is a trait that’s a facet of a character, but is not the single defining characteristic when the writer is doing a good job," said Bob Bretall, co-host of the Comic Book Page Podcast. "I applaud Archie for creating a character where being gay isn't a pejorative and showing that it's possible for the Riverdale characters to interact with Kevin as they would interact with any other person."

Matt Kane, the associate director of entertainment media at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation , said he’s pleased with the way Kevin's life has been handled so far. He said it's important for teens to see a future in which loving relationships – be they same-sex or opposite-sex – can be recognized and celebrated.

"Riverdale is this picturesque vision of American life, and when you see yourself reflected in that, you have a role in even the most idealized version of the reality you live in," Kane said. "That’s the difference between feeling like a rejected outsider and feeling like you’re a part of something."

Archie comics have become one more venue for the GBLT agenda to destroy America.

Yeah, because all we care about is destroying the country that protects us, bringing down the government that provides us basic civil rights, and devolving into anarchy so that we can become worse that the worst third-world country known. Get a life. We just wan't equal rights and representation... I believe I've heard that one before... somewhere in school maybe...

Last Archie comic I will ever buy. The pushing for acceptance of this "lifestyle" by the press is an outrage. What abomination will be next? And shame on the public schools for pushing the gay agenda too.

Awesome. A gay character in Riverdale would have been immensely helpful to me when I was a kid reading Archie Comics back in the 70s. Hopefully a good role model such as Kevin will help this next generation of gay–and straight– kids accept and understand themselves. Congratulations to Kevin on his big day!!!

I'm sure the bean counters carefully calculated the estimated increase in sales from pro-gay marriage comic book readers and the estimated losses from anti-gay marriage comic book readers. The artists who draw the characters might not be all about money and nothing more than that, but the people who employ the artists and distribute the product almost certainly are.

    December 22, 2011 at 7:53 am | Report abuse |
    • Brandon

Yeah, because the artists (and writers, whom you seem to have forgotten, and are the ones most likely responsible for this) hate to make money too. They'd much rather create a book that no one reads and is in danger of getting canceled.

When is the last time you picked up an Archie comic? Thought so. I'd say the sales of this comic have been dismal since the 70's. No idea how it kept going. The thought process is, cater to a small but rabid group and they'll at least get them on board for subscriptions until they go down the hole. This is the death knell for Archie comics.

Back when Archie Comics focused on old-fashioned values and solid storytelling (as recently as the late nineties, in fact) they were very successful. Archie Comics ere the ONLY comics on the checkout racks at Wal-Mart and other retailers. All other comics were relegated to obscure comics shops, but not Archie. They were still mainstream, and they sold a hundred thousand copies a month. Impressive numbers.

Now that they've decided to go for sensationalism over storytelling, their customer base has collapsed. It's not just this storyline, either. They've also done edgy, "realistic" versions of the characters, and other publicity stunts. It's all added up to driving their niche audience away, even as they fail to attract a new audience that will stick with them over the long haul.

Basically, Archie Comics are committing suicide.

Leviticus 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Mattthew 19:4-5 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

Rom 1:24-27 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

According to a literal interpretation of the Bible you can also sell you daughter into slavery:

"Exodus 21:7-11 And if a man sells his daughter to be a female slave, she shall not go out as the male slaves do. If she does not please the master who has selected her for himself, he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners, because he has broken faith with her. If he selects her for his son, he must grant her the rights of a daughter. If he marries another woman, he must not deprive the first one of her food, clothing and marital rights. If he does not provide her with these three things, she is to go free, without any payment of money."

And, sorry Tim Tebow, everybody who works on the Sabath should be put to death...

Exodus 35:1-3 Moses assembled the whole Israelite community and said to them, "These are the things the LORD has commanded you to do: For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death. Do not light a fire in any of your dwellings on the Sabbath day."

Isn't it interesting that people who advocate a strict reading of the bible seem to know so little about it...

CraigDuster, for clarity, the Sabbath or Shabbat is on Saturday. Football games are typically on Sunday. The Shabbat started as a Jewish custom in the Old Testament. It is observed from sunset Friday until sunset Saturday and that translation is according to the Gregorian calendar. Western culture celebrate the sabbath erroneously on Sunday because of original Catholic traditions. The Vatican even admitted this ere but because of tradition, many people still attend church services on Sunday. Godspeed!

        @CraigDuster

Yup, Tebow is safe due to the Sabbath technically being on Saturday. However (assuming you are Christian), are you planning on going around and advocating that people working on Saturdays should be put to death? Heck, maybe you should try and carry out god's will on your own (if you want to be a good christian). I know it will be a lot of work (with stores, restaurants, hospitals, etc being open on Saturdays), but you want to be a good christian right? Or do you believe it's alright to cherry-pick from your "holy" book and only do the things that are easy for you.

I don't know who replied regarding the technical time of the sabath using my name, but maybe you could take credit for your own comments and not assign my name to them. I don't care if the sabbath starts at Thursday at 1:15 and last for 14 hours, the point is the same. A literal intrepretation of the Bible is an excuse for people not to have to think on their own.

And don't forget these most religiously tolerant of verses from Deuteronomy 13:12 – 13:16:
"12 If you hear it said about one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you to live in 13 that troublemakers have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (gods you have not known), 14 then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly. And if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done among you, 15 you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. You must destroy it completely, both its people and its livestock. 16 You are to gather all the plunder of the town into the middle of the public square and completely burn the town and all its plunder as a whole burnt offering to the LORD your God. That town is to remain a ruin forever, never to be rebuilt"

So, if you really believe everything in the Bible, you'd better get to putting people to the sword and burning their towns because I hear there are a lot of non-Christians out there.

i think this discussion is funny – but sad. yea – why not advocate three men and a woman or donkey or whatever getting married. where does it stop? are there any rules? we've become a society that believes we write our own rules for morality. and, the result is a world with no boundaries, no rules, no moral compass. sadly, we can look back through time and see the demise of family, the loss of values for all things good and yes, for all things with meaning. Marriage is targeted – not for better or worse, but to destroy the value of marriage between a man and woman. We are a sad nation of people confused, lost and troubled. My children will live in a world where anything is accepted – and they will be confused because there no values to hold on to. I can't keep them locked in – and can only try to point them in the right direction – and yes, for me and my house – we will serve the Lord!

I dont understand the Gay movement...First theyre only less than 4% of the population...Its wrong if your religious or if you dont believe, but you know science (biology) its wrong...yet you see them taking over. People see it all the time on TV when it isnt as prevalent as people think...Organizations like GLAAD censor TV shows and comedians etc. they compare their problems to the Civil Rights Movement when things arent as near as bad for them as it was for Blacks in the 20th century (Segregation, Fire Hoses, Dogs, Legal Beatings, Being denied Jobs, Government humiliation). Those people went through alot more than any Gay person goes through today. They try to force their agenda on you by calling you a bigot if you dont fully support them. Well I just wonder whats next. Their arguments are "You cant stop Love" and "You cant stop progress" Well there is something called progress in the wrong direction (Example: Congress 🙂 ) Well if its just love what about incest or pedophilia or bestiality? How long will it be before those are promoted with the same argument. No one can stop you from being Gay, but please dont force your Agenda on me and my generation (only 16) and be gay like people have for thousands of years.

@Paul – a couple of thoughts as I read some of your comments, in no particular order.
      1. Why does it have to be an either/or or better/worse situation when you compare what some gays have to go through in life with what blacks have? Couldn't we just say that both groups have suffered oppression, violence and general misery?
      2. What, exactly, do you interpret as their 'agenda,' other than to be accepted by the mainstream?
      3. What difference does it make in your life what gay couples choose to do?
      4. I agree with you that sometimes racist jokes can be funny. Trading Places is a perfect example of a genius film that is also thoroughly racist. But there is a difference between a biting joke and a derogatory slur, depending on the speaker's intent. And the latter just isn't funny, but rather sad.
      5. Depending on where you live, you might want to try living in a new, major metropolitan environment sometime in the near future. Who knows? Maybe living in a different environment might make you see things differently. I'd personally recommend San Francisco, LA or New York, but there are definitely other areas too...

A very young gay boy was shot to death by another student- Mathew Shepard was tortured and then couldn't even be buried in peace – society doesn't "recognize" (gay) marriage – people live their lives in fear of being ostracized – people are beaten or shot to death for being gay- gays are constantly discriminated against....and yet you think you are an authority on gay people after reading an article about a gay marriage in a comic? Read the bible. You're going to be surprised at what's REALLY in it and not what people make up about what's in it.

Paul, just want to encourage you in your faith. Being 16, you are probably just finding out that you will never win an argument in a comment thread like this. Don't let that discourage you from following Christ. The thing to remember is that we are all sinners in need of grace. It's actually true that we are all "born that way," in the sense that we are all born into sin and therefore each of us (in different ways) desires things outside of God's design for us. If we give ourselves over to those desires, that's when the trouble comes: James 1:15 "After desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and sin, when full grown, gives birth to death." So God indeed does grant us free will to choose our own way. Our duty as Christians is simply to speak the truth in love as it says in Ephesians, and to keep reminding those who are confused by the tide of popular opinion in this generation of the verse in Psalm 14:12 "There is a way that seems right to a man,but in the end it leads to death." The best we can do is tell that truth in love and not pick fights. As Jesus said, "For him who has ears, let him hear." Some don't care to hear, and that's okay – it's their free will to do as they want. God bless you, Paul. Keep the faith, my friend.

I'm part of your generation (only 17 myself) and I'm proud to be LGBT. Just because I belong to that 4% of the population does not give people the right to discriminate against me.

You brought up pedophilia. Let me explain the difference to you: a normal relationship, regardless of orientation, takes place between two consenting adults. Pedophilia is an adult taking advantage of a child, who is unable to consent, and has the capacity to scar for life. Pedophiles use deception, "grooming," etc. to act out their sick fantasies. If you think that normal relationships and pedophilia are similar, it looks like you need to have a nice, long talk with your psychiatrist.

You're black and belong to a minority group that has been at the brunt end of centuries of discrimination, and then you go around and discriminate against gays. You of all people should know how awful it is to be hated for having traits you have no control over.

And no, you're not a Christian. You're a bigot masquerading as one.

Mion, you can be proud all you want, and you can get plenty of support from a decaying society telling you that you are just fine and dandy. But you've got a debility; nothing is going to change the nature of that. You're still worthy as a human being, and can make good contributions to the world, but don't say you're proud of being gay. Being gay is something that has to be dealt with, not celebrated. You KNOW deep down that it is. It makes life hard. It makes life lonely. It makes relationships unstable. Don't get into the scene. Don't get wrapped up into gay culture. Even if you are young, you should be able to tell where that leads. Don't let that part of yourself define who you are. You are so much more.

Paul: So basically what you are saying is gays don't get bullied, threatened, harassed or discriminated against. And that because they want to have equal rights to everyone else within the law, it's violating YOUR morals. And then you go on some long winded argument that it basically "If gays can get married what is next? Pedophilia, beastiality, etc.". A couple of points:

      1) Being gay is not illegal. Beastiality and pedophilia is. So you don't have to worry about legal marriage with animals or Man on boy action for a long time yet.
      2) Gays are constantly harassed, discriminated against, physically assaulted, and all of the above on a DAILY basis around this country. I've personally been asked (politely) to leave a premises, and when I asked why was flat out told "Because you are gay, and we don't serve qu**rs here." I've been beaten, harassed, and have feared for my life because of discrimination.
      3) We aren't asking for legalized marriage. I could go and marry a man tomorrow anywhere in this country if I wanted to. What we are demanding is the same recognition within LAW in our marriages, the same benefits LEGALLY as a man-woman union. We aren't asking for everyone to change the law, we are asking to be INCLUDED in it.
      4) None of these action, in any way, will affect your life except maybe seeing two guys or gals together openly. But you see that every day now anyways. This will not affect your taxes because after all, according to you, we are only 4% of the population (BTW, you might want to recheck your facts). This will not in any way cheapen your marriage when you do get married. This will in no way cause you any additional hardship or pain. As a matter of fact, this will not affect your ability to live your life as you see fit.

Basically we are asking for what any reasonable person, who lives within the law, would ask for. The same rights and privileges as everyone else. We haven't committed a crime. Why are we denied our rights as if we have?

The only Christians (that I know of) that cannot remarry are the Catholics, aka the original Christians. The Protestants and all others separated from the originals (hence the denomination "Protestant", of course).

One of the perks of not being an original is being able to remarry.

Are you talking about non-Catholics? Are you talking about Catholics that commit adultery? Are you talking about all Christians? What's your point? Christians are as sinful as anyone else. The important point is who regrets it and who doesn't.

So lets take a completely legal situation, and compare it to a universally (at least in the US) ILLEGAL situation for comparison.

      1) Being gay, and having a same gender partner is not illegal. Getting married to a same gender person is NOT illegal anywhere in the US. It just is not recognized by law as a lawful union in most states, nor by the federal government

      2) Incestuous relationships in which they attempt to get married IS illegal. Law DICTATES this as a Class B misdemeanor in most states. However should the couple leave the US, get married overseas, and return to the US, then the US law states that they MUST recognize the marriage as a LEGAL union.

So where is the in-equality now?

Holder is guilty of lying to Congress and for allowing his agency to run amuck with "Fast and Furious". He needs to be held accountable for the murder of Agent Bryan Terry. • Mr. Butters

Trav, let's look at the logic of choosing. So you choose. You have now opened yourself up to potential mockery. Scorn from friends and family even physical assault. But let's say you are okay with that, since you claim all these people choose this life.

What happens when it gets to the point when people are commiting suicide from bullying or shame? If it is simply a choice, why not turn it off? Do you see where the arguement falls apart. According to you people are choosing to commit suicide rather then choosing not to be gay. Does that sound like a choice?

Further, look how many gay people are out there. And let's face it, even in America they don't even have it easy. Forget some countries where you can go to jail or killed for being gay. Again, why would so many people choose this lifestyle, if they could choose to be straight, why not simply do that. Perhaps because it isn't a choice. The gay community fights an uphill battle. And if it was merely a choice I think we would see far more people simply choosing to be straight because it can be easier.

well he did specify all the world wars combined..if i where to guess i would say he was referring to the crusades which ran like what 500-600 years..add in little nasties like the Inqusitions and such..would get pretty staggering.

Not sure if it would approach the numbers from the world wars..as the logistics back then would probably set it at several thousand/crusade..whereas world Wars just annihialated cities worth of people

I loved Archie comics as a kid. Too bad they're comics are giving into the post-modernist relativism which is aiding the downfall of this country: "As long as it doesn't hurt anybody, then it's okay." Just wait until incest relationships start "coming out of the closet" because people will say that "As long we love each other, it's all that's important." We're 10 years away from seeing this from happening.

Outside of equal rights – I get that – if you are already living a lifestyle different that the majority why don't you just create your own union that is sacred to you but not marriage? Leave marraige to the hetros and your golden.

Bryan, Are you aware that married couples get certain benefits that non legally married couples do not get? Benefits such as the ability to file jointly on their tax return which gives them a reduction in their taxes? What about the ability for one spouse to sign permission for medical treatment or even be with their spouse at the hospital when only "relatives" are allowed in to see the patient? I could go on and on. So your question of why can't they just create their own "sacred marriage" and leave marriage alone really isn't equal. The real issue at heart is civil rights for all. "All men were created equal". It doesn't say "All men were created equal as long as your hetro".

It's been decades since I read any Archie comics but when I did I kinda thought Jughead was gay and was in love with Archie. I assumed he knew he had no chance so he just hung around as a buddy. When you consider; Jughead never seriously pursued a woman, any dating episodes were comic affairs, he acted and dressed differently from the other characters and seemed to take a dim view of any social relations, it wasn't all that difficult to see something that wasn't openly presented. I don't suppose that was the authors real intent but even so........just sayin'.

      ******************************NEW FLASH: **********************************
ManOfGOD thought he was a Christian then found out that he had been duped. He has a condition called STOOPID. Afflicted individuals are frequently bigoted and uncomfortable at the thought of boy on boy kissing. Many studies indicate that these individuals have usually no more then a 1st grade education. Some theorize that a kiss from another male, with a hug and the utterance of the words, "I forgive you for your stupidity" might break the STOOPID affliction. Unfortunately, the kiss donor has frequently vomited after the healing kiss. This is believed to be caused by the severe psychological trauma of having to maintain lip to lip contact with said grotesque unchristian individuals. Recommendation is that in lieu of subjecting caring, concerned and helpful gay men with said trauma that a wooden stake be driven through the chest of the afflicted. Then their remains can be used as fertilizer so there existence wasn't such a terrible waste.

Seriously? You equate being gay with pedophilia and beastiality? Seriously?
And you say you are a man of god? You might want to revisit your scripture.
I'm sure God is thrilled your your judgement of others as well as your lack of love and compassion.
      Happy Holidays!

Oh, this bring back so many memories. I loved the Archie comic series when I was a child. I always wanted Archie and Betty together and glad to see he took her instead of Veronica to the wedding of Kevin and Clay!!

Congratulations to the happy couple and for this comic for moving into the 21st century. When we stop shutting gay families and their children out of the protections and dignity of marriage, it makes their lives better. It's time to treat them equally.

Archie Comics used to be so wholesome. I will no longer be purchasing the comics. This is the start that will turn Archie into MAD. I suppose Betty or Veronica will be raped next. Oh wait, how about an unplanned pregnancy and an abortion. This is what happens when society accepts immoral behavior.

I wont be buying them anymore either. how come G a y activists always resort to name calling when they cant prove their point? Marriage is between a man and a woman, Its only natural. Have you ever tried to put two wall sockets together or tried the same with two plugs. The Plug goes into the socket.

Actually a reply to Paul above. So human relationships can be compared to electrical devices? Really? So I guess you need a voltage converter to marry a European?

Good. Save your money and get a therapist or a brain MRI you bigot. Maybe youre a big closet case with a load of unhealthy fetishes–they usually go hand and hand...eeew. I never was a closet case, thank god, and had a supportive network to help me through some challenges–I find the biggest bigots are deeply ashamed of their "impure gay thoughts" 😮 ...otherwise, what the motive to silence social progress and fail to support people that need kindness and compassion? Unless you are in need of therapy because A. you are a big grouchy bigot B. You are just plain dumb C You suffer from some form of retardation D. All of the above

Bravo!! Thank you for being ahead of the curve!! I was an avid comic book reader as a kid and never looked to Archie as I thought it was so vanilla and not like my reality. I may indeed have to give it a second chance.
