Catholic program asks gay and lesbian parishioners to abstain from sex

A new program of the Catholic church in Hartford, Connecticut, minsters to lesbian and gay parishioners. It's not about their sexual orientation Archdiocese of Hartford Deacon Robert Pallotti told CNN affiliate WFSB, "it's how they act on it sexually."

The programs asks people with same-sex attractions to abstain from having sex. Pallotti said it's a support system that could help people avoid discrimination, and increase support from friends and family.

But the director of the Hartford Gay & Lesbian Health Collective says the program is offensive.

The Catholic position on gay relations is no different from what any Bible-believing church's position should be. The only relations of which the Bible approves are relations within marriage, marriage being defined as being between 1 man and 1 woman only.

Of course they would settle out of court. Think from a business perspective if an employee did something illegal in your organization would you take it to a jury trial in civil court. If you would you are a terrible business manager. You settle out of court to mitigate exposure (which did not work with the catholic church) and hopefully leave without paying everything from your coffers. As far as covering it up unless your attorney in not the brightest crayon in the box you make the victim sign a confidentiality agreement. This is done so that the business can save face and get out of media hot water. This did not work for the Catholic church and the media took a hold of these cases and ran them through the cycle until every person in the world with a twenty four seven news coverage heard about it. The church did not cover up anything they mitigated exposure to only those it concerned. If your child was molested would you want the media poking and prodding around to find the story or would you rather handle the matter behind closed doors? (When I say that I do not mean put under the rug I mean have a settlement and ensure the child is taken care of mentally and physically.)

They are a company they are the worlds largest non profit organization with a clear line of who is in charge and how money is distributed around the world. In order for a large organization to be successful you need to run it like a company. The church has goals and missions like that of any other non profit organization. I assume you meant "produce rapists" and again I ask if you believe the catholic church embraces the idea of molesting children? The simple answer to that is no look at the facts the are over 400,000 priests in the world and only about 200 have been accused and or convicted of molestation and or rape. That is a percent of 0.03 much much less than other professions. The only reason people are upset about it is because when ever something happens in the catholic church the media jumps on it like a hungry wolf. You do not hear about the other 286 reported cases of child molestation by protestant leaders in the U.S. alone. The media holds the catholic church on a higher pedestal and cannot wait to knock them down.

Like asking that changes anything relevant to the core issue. Either a church accepts GLBT as people worthy of salvation, or they do not. A person then has a right and responsibility to decide if that church is on moral ground, or simply bigoted and insensitive to some of their flock. To me, the Catholic church has long ago lost its moral compass, allowing/ignoring priests molesting children, not allowing priest to marry, etc.

    January 5, 2012 at 5:29 pm | Report abuse |
    • John

Although there have been issues with the molestation of children the not allowing priests to marry is actually something that is a good idea. A priest's job is the be a leader of the parishioners of the church, this could mean going to hospitals at three am to in order to give last rights and console grieving families. The priest is to be available whenever the bishop calls him and move when the bishops sends him to. There is a massive priest shortage in this country and in many places the priest moves around after so many years in a parish in order to ensure that the area is covered somewhat to the needs of the people. With that in mind it would seem impossible to preform all these duties and support a wife and possibly children. A priest could not stay home because his wife is sick when the bishop calls him. If one wishes to serve the church and be married he can always be a deacon.

I am Episcopalian and my priests are married. They have to go to the hospital at 3:00 am sometimes and that's part of the job. My husband is in IT and has to work at 3:00 am also (that's when the systems are off-line). Should he not be married? That is a weak argument.

I understand what you are saying about having to move with little notice. That is true and it's one of the reasons they are not allowed to marry although the Vatican will never admit that. There is a priest shortage so it seems logical to not allow them to marry so that they can be moved about like chess pieces; however this is counterproductive. If they are allowed to marry the chances are good that more people (men and women, but that's a completely different discussion) would follow their calling. More priests alleviates a shortage thereby reducing the need to move someone on such short notice.

On topic – we are made in His image. The Trinity is a relationship. They are in perfect relationship with each other and we were made to live in relationship as well. To ask people to not live in the relationship that they were born for is not walking in line with the Gospel. Neither is not allowing priests to marry. Very un-Biblical.

The priest is married to the church that is who he devotes his time and energy to. If your husband did not go into work at 3 am then the systems would not get worked on. If a priest does not go to a hospital to provide last rights or console a family in a time of need what is the point of having the priest. This is not a job for the men who choose the vocation of the church it is a lifestyle. They are sacrificing having a marriage on earth to emulate the marriage of God and his church.

I frankly am distraught at the comments people leave on this thread. Does the catholic church have problems, yes but with any large organization there will be problems. The catholic church provides faith services to over one billion people around the world there is bound to be problems. Lets not forget that there is childhood molestation in other religious sects. The associated press reported that there are around 260 cases of abuse filed against non catholic clergy. Instead of blaming the church as a whole, I.E. The catholic church is full of pedophiles, lets go the the issue at hand. There are some people who have been placed in a great deal of power and do not know how to control their urges. Does this make the catholic church bad as a whole, by no means it rather shows that there is a priest who cannot handle the responsibility of the power he has.

Were there transgressions that permanently affected a child. Yes, the church issued an apology and even paid punitive damages. The priest was removed from the parish and told he can never work around children. What more can be done? How about a blanket statement that all priests in the world can never work with children ever. What about the priest who protected children from abusive parents? Priests as a whole do amazing things to serve the people of earth... There are however a few that do terrible things and they are punished. Keep in mind that even though this is a group that services the faith of people there are still politics within the walls. Do you really think that Politics doe snot effect a large organization?

Remember I said that there are politics in the Church just like any other large organization. They might have bounced around priests but the underlying fact of the matter is that what happened happend and the church is attempting to move forward. People however, continue to bring up issues from the past and never trust the church as a whole because of a select group that did not follow the way the Vatican wanted priest to act. Honestly does anyone think the catholic church endorses the molestation of children. Do you think they talk about it to each other over coffee like it is a normal way of life. If you do you have more issues than I care to address. Why should over 400,000 priests be called pedophiles when maybe one to two hundred have done something wrong.

It is discriminatory. Considering how archaic the Catholic principlesare, their tolerance for change, and the speed at which they make these changes, it is still a step in the right direction. At the least, the glbt communities are being recognized and accepted, albeit with restriction but accepted in certain ways.

If it were me in the situation, I would take my donations to another church/teaching. For a group whose original followers were the outcasts of society, their acceptance has certainly done a 180.
