Searching Mexico's census for a clues about American history

By Michael Martinez, CNN

(CNN) - For professional genealogists – and amateurs like actor Edward James Olmos – an extraordinary moment is unfolding for the nation’s Latino community, thanks to the digital age.

It’s the revelation of the 1930 Mexican census, which was distributed free online this year.

Decades ago, such data might not have been as meaningful. But the United States’ own recent census now shows that Latinos are the nation’s No. 2 group in 2010. With 50.5 million Hispanics now in the United States, the 1930 Mexican census offers a glimpse into the heritage and history of an emerging cornerstone community – especially because 31.8 million Americans are of Mexican descent.

“All of the information that we’re getting from the census is really extraordinary because it’s leading us into different realms of understanding of what was happening at the time to our family,” Olmos said. “It’s been quite an experience to go in there, and it’s been very educational.”

The 1930 Mexican census – with its handwritten entries on large sheets of rowed and columned paper – is now an online database accessible for free at ancestry.com/mexico.

The online materials show nearly 13 million census documents, which offers information such as head of household; age; civil or church marriages or living together in “free union”; ability to read and write; occupation; place of birth; language spoken, including any indigenous languages; physical or mental defects; and religion.

The 1930 Mexican census is regarded as the earliest, most thorough accounting of that country’s population. It counted 90% of the people living there, although the residents of Mexico City aren't included because of records are missing, said George Ryskamp, associate professor of history at Brigham Young University, who has researched, taught and lectured on genealogy in Latin America and Spain.

“It’s extremely significant,” Ryskamp said of the 1930 Mexican census. “I [have been] doing Spain and Latin American genealogy for the past 35 years. When I first started out, there wasn’t a lot of interest.

“It’s just exciting to see that we’ve reached a point, at least commercially, that there are enough people of Mexican ancestry [in the United States] that they are putting up that information. Genealogically, it represents a significant step. It recognizes that this is a minority group whose needs have been recognized and are going to be met.”

Later Mexican census records aren’t available yet or are believed missing, Ryskamp said.

David Hayes-Bautista, professor of medicine and director of Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at the University of California at Los Angeles, said the 1930 documents are “an important marker census.”

“During the revolution, Mexico actually lost population: About a million people died and about a million people left [for the United States],” Hayes-Bautista said. “And that was when Mexico was run by an 80% rural population. This captures Mexico just as it starts to shifts to an urbanized population.”

That mass migration during the revolution included Olmos’ maternal grandmother and her family, who “were some of the intellectuals who really forged the Mexican Revolution in 1910,” Olmos said.

“They had to escape out of Mexico” because of it, he said.

But when they continued advocating the revolution from the U.S. side of the border, the U.S. government threw his forebears in jail, the Oscar-nominated actor said.

“They were really feeding the war in Mexico from St. Louis and from Los Angeles, and they were then put into prison in Leavenworth, Kansas,” Olmos said. “One of my great uncles was killed there."

Watch Olmos' CNN Red Chair Interview

Olmos said the information can be enriching to Latinos, including U.S.-born Mexican-Americans who might want to seek dual citizenship with Mexico and need to prove a parent was born in Mexico. Olmos is a paid spokesman for Ancestry.com.

Olmos secured dual citizenship after he spent eight years searching for his father’s birth records. In the end, he never found the birth certificate, but he did find "a birth memoir inside a hospital" that noted his father's birth in Mexico City in 1922, Olmos said. His mother was born in Los Angeles, he said.

“Many of us should take into consideration that, if your parents were born in Mexico, then you can become a Mexican citizen and that gives you opportunities to vote,” Olmos said.

“It gives you the opportunities to comment, and it gives you the opportunity to help when it’s most needed right now in Mexico, which is the turmoil that’s going on there. This opens up the door for you to realize how deeply you are rooted in Mexico and how what happens in Mexico has a direct issue and foundation on who you are as a human being, and you can help."

“I think that’s what we all should be doing is trying to help - where we come from,” Olmos said. "If you’re Irish, I’m sure you should think about the Irish people. And if you’re English, or if you’re African, or if you’re German, or if you’re Dutch, you’ll be definitely thinking about your root, and the deeper you go into that, the more you understand why you should be a part of understanding and helping those regions of the world."

Mexicans are an important part of US economics. When the US limited people coming from Mexico a few years ago farmers in Southern California and Arizona lost a lot of their crops because the workers from the US won't do the hard labor it takes to harvest crops. Let the Mexican people who are working in the US get legal.

JOSE0311USMC, you keep saying you are Hispanic so I wonder at what point your ancestors also crossed the border illegally. Illegal crossing has been happening for decades so if they had shut down the borders the right way back then you would have probably been in Mexico eating tacos right now thinking of how to cross ILLEGALLY. You sure talk a lot of crap because you are on this side of the border already. Do the rest of us true Hispanic and stop claiming it if you don't have a clue what being Hispanic really means. Eh-hem... isn't it just as judgemental to state that because someone lives in a trailer or trailer park that they are uneduacted or illiterate? In fact I myself live in a trailer below the poverty level so that I can afford to finish my college eduation with 2 majors and a minor because I check "caucasion non-hispanic" on my applications. Thank GOD I'm a woman or I would have missed the boat on affirmative action completely. Here's an idea... instead of blaming Mexicans or "Republican trailer park residents" for the ruin of our country, look in the mirror. By lumping a well read, well educated social liberal/fiscal conservative who is a registered independant in with "red necks" or hyper conservative biggots, you have revealed that you have far more in common with them then you do most of the desent people on here just trying to stand up for Mexican's right to exist. One more thing... look over your posts for spelling and grammar before you start going off on people for being uneducated.

This guy is off center. He encourages all Mexican-Hispanics legal and not, to vote there and live here? Then with tongue in cheek encourages Americans of European decent to look into doing the same? The European-Americans aren't trying to take over America for the sake of their old country like Mexicans are. We are here to be Americans and proud of our heritage. We have more precise records to fall back on, so don't have to pretend to be something we aren't. Mexicans want to be Mexicans but use up our free resources, they don't respect this country or fly our flag. Maybe this guy should go back to the home of his parents, he seem more concerned about Mexico but uses up what we offer. Why is he even here?

@EMB2- Really? Close the public schools and that is going to make a difference? You're full of it! The point of this article has nothing to do with public schools! The point of this article is to be proud of your heritage, and learn something about where you and your family came from. After reading your comments I think you came from the planet Moron! Do I agree there are issues with some of the public school systems? You bet! There are indeed bad teachers and administrators. But that was not the subject here! I am a proud Scot-Irish and I love my Kilts! I wear 'em as often as I can just to mess with guys like you, and to allow the boys a little air! My wife loves my Kilts too for good reason! Everyone should know their heritage, and where they came from good or bad. A certain genetic pool or trait can then be explained as to behavior, illness, etc. What Mr. Olmos is doing is an exciting journey for him, and shouldn't be made fun of. AND SINCE WHEN DID GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY BECOME AN ELECTIVE? WE NEED TO CLOSE THOSE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, FIRE THE SUPERINTENDENTS OF THOSE SCHOOL DISTRICTS, AND START ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!! No wonder we have so many brainless twits running around this country who are completely iliterate with their pants hanging down around their knees and their underwear showing!!!! Shame on our public schools, shame on our educational system, shame, shame, shame. Granted I found school a bore for the most part because of the other the stupidity, BUT I DID ENJOY THE LEARNING PROCESS!!!! Read children, read!!!!!!! If you can read, YOU CAN GO ANYWHERE!!!!!

I think it is very important to know where you come from in order to understand yourself better as Mr. Olmos says. Maybe if world history or geography was not an elective in many public schools in America our kids could learn from history and the world and not grow up and make the same mistakes we continue to make as a society and countries but have a better understanding for each other as human beings. There are many more things that unite us than divide us..

You usually learn about your heritage from your parents, grantparents and family members first then through research either on the web or through Salt Lake City, UT archives. American and World history is very important to study, your personal history is your own expense, not to be paid for with our tax dollars and put on the burden of our educational system. If Mexicans want to learn about their ancestors there are web sites for that.

Would you believe John Garfield is my fatorive American actor? It's a shame he's nearly forgotten, at least in the popular memory. Admittedly some of that has to do with the quality of his films; Warner Bros never did right by him. You've probably seen Force of Evil (made after his contract ended and he struck out on his own) as it's been championed by Scorsese. If not, I highly recommend it as an excellent film noir. Nobody Lives Forcver is one of his best films and boasts very atmospheric noirish direction by Jean Negulesco. I wouldn't say I have a fatorive Scorsese film as he isn't a director whose work I return to and re-watch (although I tremendously admire many of his films!). I really enjoyed Goodfellas and Bringing Out the Dead. I've seen BOtD in the theater and on DVD and thought it was great both times, but also that it seemed like a very different movie the second time. Watching it on a small screen- and with non-immersive sound- it seemed much more (blackly) comic and far less intensely dramatic than in the theater.

I don't think E is welcoming Mexico to take back over these lands, he is merely stating a historical fact...however, it is true that borders are malleable and constantly changing in the grand scheme of things. This does not mean I welcome it, I am just stating a fact. I don't know why people paint the word with a simple "us against them" face, the world is much more complex than that. Ignorant, lazy people paint it that way.

Good article if you are of Hispanic origins. However, everybody including those doing the research knows that a majority number, well over what is being report, are here ILLLEGALLY! So they try to trump those numbers into the legal groups for some sort of moment. I have ZERO respect for them to be honest. The disrespect for the flag, laws, peoples, the list goes on. I have lost all respect for them. And feel for the ones that game here legally! CNN is merely marketing stories for this group the same way they did African Americans. Enough already. They are not special. If they want their history, head on back down SOUTH of the border and stay!

The more mixed race and culture we are the better this country will be. If people are against any culture or race after that then they must hate themselves also for being from more than one culture or ethnic background. Intelliegence comes in all shapes ,forms, cultures and race.

They are the second largest group in America, Whopee Do! And no I am not interested in news for just white people I am interested in news that affects all Americans and my world. This section seems to exist in order to give the talentless Soledad O'brian something to do. And CNN is also hedging it's bets since most people don't watch them so they have to appeal to a new audiance. The Majority of American citizens are more concerned with jobs and paying bills and having a government that works. But it's typical of the media to divide us all into little ethnic groups so we will watch there crappy channels. Fox does not appea to me and CNN is quickly loosing it as well.

      • Isaac Mizrahi Weds Arnold Germer

      • Ridiculous: Anderson vs Weebles
      • Are the Cowboys still America's team
      • Back to Jersey Shore

I could go on indefinitely. The point is that not everything on CNN is breaking news. And with 30 million Americans being Mexican, it seems like offering stories that are relevant to them would be prudent. Don't look now, but your bigotry is showing.

It was interesting to find my grandparents, as well as my mother and her siblings. It was also interesting to note that though most of my aunts and uncles had been born in Mexico, their nationality was listed as Lebanese (my grandparents imigrated from Lebananon). I recall that my mother told me she had to apply for Mexican citizenship when she turned 21. Mexico doesn't grant birth right citizenship, even for those legally in the country.

I'm sure it's nice to reflect on U.S. history since 1930, but hey, that doesn't change the fact that groups of various descents were doing their thing here in 1607. And communities were here for many, many years before even that. U.S. "history" didn't begin with a Mexican census in 1930....

I believe family and cultural history is very important to all Americans. Whether it's the past history and traditions of Mexican-Americans, or the history and traditions of Southerners. You can't advocate for one set of American history to the exclusion of others. Let's just get all the truth out there and stop worrying about who we offend. No on who is not from these groups will be harmed by the truth. But it enhances our understanding of why things are the way they are today. It's this type of ignorance, of trying to silence truth, that makes people think of The Battle Flag of the Confederacy as a symbol of racism. This flag is part of American history. It's because we hide from the real history, that racists are able to use the symbol for their corrupted agenda.

“Many of us should take into consideration that, if your parents were born in Mexico, then you can become a Mexican citizen and that gives you opportunities to vote,” Olmos said. Then become a Mexican citizen, move to Mexico and vote. Dual citizenship creates a myriad of potential conflicts. If you're a Mexican citizen and also hold U.S. citizenship, which country do you support when one opposes an action by the other country. As a voting block, do Mexican citizens voting here wield undue power in continuing Mexican efforts to reclaim former Mexican territory in our Southwest.

The ability to adopt dual citizenship is rather recent – mid to late 90s. The Mexican govt wanted a large lobby in the US that would vote in ways that would benefit Mexico. As a senior minister said at the time – 'when they go to vote, we want them to think Mexico, first.'

I vote, I'm an activist, I stand up for what I believe in and for what I believe would make this nation better, which is a hell of a lot more than most Americans can say.

There is no "split loyalty," that's just something you're making up in your mind so you can have another group of people to pick on. Don't speak for dual citizens unless you are one, simple as that.

This country was invaded by Europeans who stayed and built up the country. Asians also were part of building our West and Mexicans our SW. But the Dutch, French, Chinese and Russian descendants don't have an organization like La Raza (The Race) trying to effect La Reconqista (The Reconquest) of this country for their country of origin. Mexico is still angry that we beat them on the battlefield during the Mexican-American War (1846). After that we annexed California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas and incorporated them into the United States. So all these years later they are still stomping their feet and whining about the loss. Mexico is a big country with lots to offer – maybe they should spend this reconquest energy trying to fix what's wrong down there instaead of bringing it up here. They'd be alot happier and be better neighbors.

There's a great quote from an earlier "reconquest", that of the Christians to retake Spain in 1492. Besides sending Columbus out, Isabella & Ferdinand fought to reclaim Spain from the Moslem Berbers. As they came crashing thru the front gate of Granada, the last emir and his mother ran out the back. When far enough away he looked back at the beautiful city he'd ruled and started to cry. His mother rounded on him and shouted "Do not weep like a child for what you could not hold as a man!" You remember the bombing of the Madrid train station a few years ago? That was the Moslems trying to reconquer Spain. I guess nothing ever changes. Maybe we could station the troops coming home fron Central Asia down on the border, might work. That's not bigotry, that's history Mike.

My mother was born in Mexico. I am bilingual and speak Spanish fluently. My father is 3rd generation German and Romanian. I understand what you are saying about investigating your roots and being concerned about what happens. I have done some of this and I am concerned. However, my concern over Mexico has far more to do with the proximity to us than the accidental fact that my mother was born there. I have always hated the insinuation from either side of my family that I have to choose if I am "Latino" or "White" or whatever. But when someone asks me "what are you?" I answer "I'm American". If they are nice I usually follow up by telling them that my mother was born in Guadalajara and my father was born in the Bronx and half German, half Romanian. Many people will just hear "Hispanic". I also have never liked having to choose a heritage on the census. I am proud of who I am and who my parents are. But at what point, if ever, do we become simply "Americans"?

Ray, I agree with you in many ways. I am a first generation American and my parents are both Mexican.

People always say that we should only identify ouselves as American but they themselves do not see it that way...I have friends of all ethnicities, I do not discriminate.

But truth be told, when people identify each other it doesn't matter, they will always say "that white guy" or "that Mexican guy", so on and so forth. So society can't get mad at people identifying themselves as something other than American, because society does that first.

If you want to help fix Mexico, move back or don't leave in the first place.

But don't kid yourself in thinking that by voting from the safety of the U.S. you are doing ANYTHING to help Mexico's people.

And I think it's way beyond time for people to stop trying to define themselves by their ancestry or race.

I think what Eddie Olmos forgot to mention, that also "people" (Businessmen, Landowners) like my family were driven out of Mexico by the 1910 Revolution. Comparable to the Cuban Revolution and Hugo Chavez Revolution in Venezuela. My family had to forfeit their productuve business and land to the People's Mexican Revolution of 1910, or be "shot". In reading Eddie Olmos story it is quite different from my family history, and after the Revolution my family wanted to return to Mexico, but the People's Government of Pancho Villa delayed that, and by all accounts we loss our land and business to the 1910 Revolutionary Government of Mexico. It is funny though, Eddie Olmos comes from the same town in California as I do, he lived in the South, while I lived in the north. But our Histories our quite different, and in a way what did the 1910 Revolution accomplish? In my view "nothing"

Bravo, Bill... You just put 'everything' in honest perspective. I'm from Miami, and I know many many Cubans who are Americans not necessarily by choice, but are proud to be Americans, and not take advantage of or want to destroy the U.S.

I think allot of people forget that allot of Mexican-Americans were driven north in 1910, not by choice but because of the Politics of that time. My family was lucky because we came in through Colombus, NM and at that time NM was still a Territory of the US (Just for your info NM celebrated this pass week its 100th year of Statehood). But as I said, what did the Revolution of 1910 accomplish in Mexico? Nothing! If it indeed accomplished its "goals" their would be no illegal immigration at this time, the lands that were -re-distributed to the "people" of Mexico would be productive lands, which they are not. All in all, as I said its like the Socialist Revolutions the world over, maybe at that time it was one step forward, but eventually afterwards its 10 steps backwards. I do not see Paradise in Mexico, Cuba, and Venezuela..in fact I feel sorry for the people because the Gov's have implanted the mentality of poverty which Dictators like Chavez, Castro, and the Government of Mexico thrive on this persecution complex.

      Good comments Bill.

In the same way that Mexicans escaped the revolution in 1910, most now and against their free will, as they are the starving crowd, leave their homes in México in order to have a humane life in the US. And most Americans welcome these hard working people who just want to work and lead descent lives (there is a small percentage that take advantage of the system and good will of Americans, but they are the least.)

  54. Get it right.

    BS propaganda article.

Mexican = From Mexico. Not Hispanic or Latino.
Hispanic = European from Spain. Not Mexican.
Latino = European from Italy. Not Mexican.

Quit trying to inflate your numbers by claiming to be someone you are not. Just Google "people of Spain""people of Italy""people of Mexico" and look at IMAGES if you're still having trouble understanding.

So answer some real questions. If Latinos are the No. 2 group who's No. 1 and what ranking are Mexicans? If there are 50.5 million Hispanics in the U.S. how many Mexicans are here? You say 31.8 million Americans are of Mexican decscent. Does that number include Latinos and Hispanics who are not Mexican? How many Mexicans are born in the United States each year?

      Latin= Of Italian decent

Most of the Mexican people are what you call Mestizos, meaning a mix of European and Native mix. In Mexico that being Spanish, that why they speak it, get it?

      So most Mexicans are Hispanic

And Visa Versa... If you are from any country, but one of your parents is an American, You can vote for Obama. So, virtually anybody, billions of people around the world, can find a geneology of an American to tap into, swamp the voter registration authorities who may, or may not, want to confirm the information, and they can vote for Obama from ANY foreign land. Oh Boy, ACORN on steroids. The great world "middle class", (read Union and Government Employees Only, just like Americans Only recognized middle class) can finally overrule anything, even without Soros. Yippee!!!

Do we really need ANOTHER article about this actor and the census? This is the second article CNN posted about this actor and his latino, chico, essays, chicano's, or whatever the hell they call each other finding their roots. Okay, we get it now. Search your family history, make a Selena part 2 movie, mow a lawn, eat a few tacos, and shut up already.

We are first USONIANS then Americans. Why because a person from Mexico, Canada or from any of the Americas is also an American. A person from the USA is a USONIAN. But why has this word been hidden and not used? Because by calling us irish, mexican, greek or afro americans it helps to keep us divided by powers of the gillded age blue bloods. Through lies, manipulation, propaganda, and specific words the powers to be can control the masses alot easier than trying to control a nation of nationalist called the USONIANS.

I have Irish heritage, however, I don't think of myself as anything but an American. My grandfather who was born in Ireland and came to the US didn't think of himself as anything but an American. The problem with the new wave of immigrants is that they don't fully embrace what it means to be American. I think the idea of dual-citizenship is fine, assuming you spend time in both countries and have a truly vested interest in what happens there. But I have no business voting in Ireland and American citizens should not be influencing elections or policies in any country but their own.
