By Michael Martinez, CNN
(CNN) - For professional genealogists – and amateurs like actor Edward James Olmos – an extraordinary moment is unfolding for the nation’s Latino community, thanks to the digital age.
It’s the revelation of the 1930 Mexican census, which was distributed free online this year.
Decades ago, such data might not have been as meaningful. But the United States’ own recent census now shows that Latinos are the nation’s No. 2 group in 2010. With 50.5 million Hispanics now in the United States, the 1930 Mexican census offers a glimpse into the heritage and history of an emerging cornerstone community – especially because 31.8 million Americans are of Mexican descent.
“All of the information that we’re getting from the census is really extraordinary because it’s leading us into different realms of understanding of what was happening at the time to our family,” Olmos said. “It’s been quite an experience to go in there, and it’s been very educational.”
The 1930 Mexican census – with its handwritten entries on large sheets of rowed and columned paper – is now an online database accessible for free at ancestry.com/mexico.
The online materials show nearly 13 million census documents, which offers information such as head of household; age; civil or church marriages or living together in “free union”; ability to read and write; occupation; place of birth; language spoken, including any indigenous languages; physical or mental defects; and religion.
The 1930 Mexican census is regarded as the earliest, most thorough accounting of that country’s population. It counted 90% of the people living there, although the residents of Mexico City aren't included because of records are missing, said George Ryskamp, associate professor of history at Brigham Young University, who has researched, taught and lectured on genealogy in Latin America and Spain.
“It’s extremely significant,” Ryskamp said of the 1930 Mexican census. “I [have been] doing Spain and Latin American genealogy for the past 35 years. When I first started out, there wasn’t a lot of interest.
“It’s just exciting to see that we’ve reached a point, at least commercially, that there are enough people of Mexican ancestry [in the United States] that they are putting up that information. Genealogically, it represents a significant step. It recognizes that this is a minority group whose needs have been recognized and are going to be met.”
Later Mexican census records aren’t available yet or are believed missing, Ryskamp said.
David Hayes-Bautista, professor of medicine and director of Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at the University of California at Los Angeles, said the 1930 documents are “an important marker census.”
“During the revolution, Mexico actually lost population: About a million people died and about a million people left [for the United States],” Hayes-Bautista said. “And that was when Mexico was run by an 80% rural population. This captures Mexico just as it starts to shifts to an urbanized population.”
That mass migration during the revolution included Olmos’ maternal grandmother and her family, who “were some of the intellectuals who really forged the Mexican Revolution in 1910,” Olmos said.
“They had to escape out of Mexico” because of it, he said.
But when they continued advocating the revolution from the U.S. side of the border, the U.S. government threw his forebears in jail, the Oscar-nominated actor said.
“They were really feeding the war in Mexico from St. Louis and from Los Angeles, and they were then put into prison in Leavenworth, Kansas,” Olmos said. “One of my great uncles was killed there."

Olmos said the information can be enriching to Latinos, including U.S.-born Mexican-Americans who might want to seek dual citizenship with Mexico and need to prove a parent was born in Mexico. Olmos is a paid spokesman for Ancestry.com.
Olmos secured dual citizenship after he spent eight years searching for his father’s birth records. In the end, he never found the birth certificate, but he did find "a birth memoir inside a hospital" that noted his father's birth in Mexico City in 1922, Olmos said. His mother was born in Los Angeles, he said.
“Many of us should take into consideration that, if your parents were born in Mexico, then you can become a Mexican citizen and that gives you opportunities to vote,” Olmos said.
“It gives you the opportunities to comment, and it gives you the opportunity to help when it’s most needed right now in Mexico, which is the turmoil that’s going on there. This opens up the door for you to realize how deeply you are rooted in Mexico and how what happens in Mexico has a direct issue and foundation on who you are as a human being, and you can help."
“I think that’s what we all should be doing is trying to help - where we come from,” Olmos said. "If you’re Irish, I’m sure you should think about the Irish people. And if you’re English, or if you’re African, or if you’re German, or if you’re Dutch, you’ll be definitely thinking about your root, and the deeper you go into that, the more you understand why you should be a part of understanding and helping those regions of the world."
It's fantastic that you are getting ideas from this piece of writing as well as from our discussion made at this place.
Mexicans are an important part of US economics. When the US limited people coming from Mexico a few years ago farmers in Southern California and Arizona lost a lot of their crops because the workers from the US won't do the hard labor it takes to harvest crops. Let the Mexican people who are working in the US get legal.
MEXICANS ILLEGALS LOVE TO ACCUSE AMERICANS OF BEING BIGOTS-RACISTS -OF DISCRIMINATION IS OBVIOUS THAT IS THEIR ONLY DEFENSE THAT THEY HAVE...
WHEN AN ILLEGAL GETS HURT ON THE JOB--OR-HAVE BABIES THEY GO TO HOSPITALS EMERGENCY ROOMS, WHO PAYS FOR THEIR HOSPITAL BILLS ?? AMERICAN TAX PAYERS DO. IS THAT FAIR ??? DO YOU THINK THAT AMERICANS ENJOY PAYING YOUR HOSPITAL BILLS ?? HELL NO....BUT WHEN WE COMPLAINT , WE ARE CALLED BIGOTS-RACISTS-THEY ACCUSE US OF DISCRIMINATION....YOU PEOPLE ARE STUPIDOS..CROOKS. HOPING THE SUPREME COURT RULES IN FAVOR OF ARIZONA SOON, SO WE CAN START DEPORTING . I'M 75 % SURE THAT THE SUPREME COURT WILL BACK UP ARIZONA IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT. I LOVE AMERICA-I HATE ILLEGALS..
You keep saying you are hispanic like if you are ashamed of where your parents came from lol but JOSE0311USMC I know you are a central american, your people have never done anything to this nation, your people came here and only live in hoods, have no businesses and stay on welfare, and on top of that you guys formed the most dangerous gang which is MS13, on top of that you guys do not even pay your bills, you guys are the least home owners in the Latino community LOL, the ones with the least college education. Go back to central america, im sure you live in Pico-Union, mexicans been here for so long and have history here, your people are only leeches who like passing as mexicans LOL Take a look at central america, the poorest region in Latin America, your people have contributed to anything in Latin America, you guys are only leeching off of Latin America, Mexico gives you guys internet and phone services because your people are too poor to own a company LOL
Hey people, think before you write. Please!!!!..
JOSE0311USMC, you keep saying you are Hispanic so I wonder at what point your ancestors also crossed the border illegally. Illegal crossing has been happening for decades so if they had shut down the borders the right way back then you would have probably been in Mexico eating tacos right now thinking of how to cross ILLEGALLY. You sure talk a lot of crap because you are on this side of the border already. Do the rest of us true Hispanic and stop claiming it if you don't have a clue what being Hispanic really means. Drop the Jose and just go with JOE0311USMC.
I think I will have tacos for lunch on the US side of the border...
ta dada dada dada ta dada dada dadaaa!!!!!
HISPANIC, NOT MEXICAN..
JOSE0311USMC, you keep saying you are Hispanic so I wonder at what point your ancestors also crossed the border illegally. Illegal crossing has been happening for decades so if they had shut down the borders the right way back then you would have probably been in Mexico eating tacos right now figuring out how to cross ILLEGALLY. You sure talk a lot of crap because you are on this side of the border already. Do the rest of us true Hispanic and stop claiming it if you don't have a clue what being Hispanic really means. Drop the Jose and just go with JOE0311USMC.
Rafie.....uhmmm....yea about this "true Hispanic" thingy you got going....perhaps you should take a back seat...since your little comment made to belittle does nothing more than show your ignorance.
Eh-hem... isn't it just as judgemental to state that because someone lives in a trailer or trailer park that they are uneduacted or illiterate? In fact I myself live in a trailer below the poverty level so that I can afford to finish my college eduation with 2 majors and a minor because I check "caucasion non-hispanic" on my applications. Thank GOD I'm a woman or I would have missed the boat on affirmative action completely. Here's an idea... instead of blaming Mexicans or "Republican trailer park residents" for the ruin of our country, look in the mirror. By lumping a well read, well educated social liberal/fiscal conservative who is a registered independant in with "red necks" or hyper conservative biggots, you have revealed that you have far more in common with them then you do most of the desent people on here just trying to stand up for Mexican's right to exist. One more thing... look over your posts for spelling and grammar before you start going off on people for being uneducated.
It really hurts that there are so many bigots among us. The stupidity among some of you is alarming.
JUST BECAUSE AMERICANS WANT THE IMMIGRATION LAWS ENFORCE DOESN'T MAKE THEM A BIGOT..IS THE LAWS IN THE BOOKS...WE ARE TIRED OF MEXICANS INVADING OUR COUNTRY, WE HAVE OUR OWN PROBLEMS TO DEAL WITH, WE DO NOT NEED YOUR PROBLEMS...MAKE MEXICO WORK FOR YOU.
to "hispanic guy" what fantastic jobs are these illegals taking away from the people of this country? i'm from the central valley of calif. i've never in my entire 51 yrs of life have ever seen any other race other than hispanic out in the fields and orchards! also i am a native of the mono/yokut tribes. am i racist because of stating the facts as i see it? naw. but have every right to be. i am an american! free speech....it's a beautiful thing 'n it.
I DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MEXICANS TAKING FARM JOBS, BUT THEY ARE ALSO TAKING GOOD CONSTRUCTION JOBS-GOOD PAYING ROOFING JOBS–GREAT PAYING CONSTRUCTIONS JOBS-GOOD PAYING HOME BUILDING JOBS..I SEE YOU GUYS DOING THOSE JOBS EVERYDAY, SO DON'T TELL ME THAT YOU ONLY TAKE JOBS THAT AMERICANS DO NOT WANT.. NOT TRUE......THOSE JOBS USED TO PAY GREAT WAGES, UNTIL THE ILLEGAL GOT HERE, WAGES ARE NOW DOWN ON THOSE JOBS THAT I MENTION.
An aside here. I stopped counting typos in this article after three. CNN editors must take weekends off:)
AMERICA IS DOOMED PEOPLE....WE ARE ALLOWING TOO MANY PEOPLE TO COME TO OUR COUNTRY....WE DON'T HAVE JOBS--OUR JOBS ARE BEING OUTSOURCE, WHY ARE WE STILL ALLOWING MORE PEOPLE IN OUR COUNTRY ??? LEGAL IMMIGRATION SHOULD OF BEEN SHUT DOWN 5 YEARS AGO TO PROTECT THE AMERICAN CITIZENS WHO DO NOT HAVE A JOB, BUT POLITICIANS ARE AFRAID TO DO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE...WE ARE DOOMED ...MORE PEOPLE IS NOT THE ANSWER-LESS PEOPLE IS THE ANSWER. I'M A HISPANIC GUY , SO DON'T CALL ME A RACISTS
Lets start by deporting everyone who types in ALL CAPS
GUEST, DO I KNOW YOU ??? MAILMAN ??
but there is a HUGE difference between melting pot theory and ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
are people really so stupid to not see that and just think anyone who doesnt want this country ruined is rasict?
IF MEXICANS DO NOT AGREE WITH YOU, WE ARE RACISTS....BIGOTS.. STUPIDOS....
This guy is off center. He encourages all Mexican-Hispanics legal and not, to vote there and live here? Then with tongue in cheek encourages Americans of European decent to look into doing the same? The European-Americans aren't trying to take over America for the sake of their old country like Mexicans are. We are here to be Americans and proud of our heritage. We have more precise records to fall back on, so don't have to pretend to be something we aren't. Mexicans want to be Mexicans but use up our free resources, they don't respect this country or fly our flag. Maybe this guy should go back to the home of his parents, he seem more concerned about Mexico but uses up what we offer. Why is he even here?
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM A MEXICAN ?? THEY ARE FOR OPEN BORDERS--NO IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT....I QUESTION WHY WE HAVE SO MANY BORDER AGENTS THAT ARE MEXICANS...HIRING MEXICANS TO KEEP MEXICANS OUT ??? THAT IS STUPID...I'M POSITIVE THAT WHEN NO ONE IS LOOKING THAT THEY LOOK THE OTHER WAY ALLOWING THE ILLEGALS TO PASS ...HIRING MEXICAN BORDER AGENTS TO KEEP MEXICANS OUT ?? IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE.
There sure is alot of question marks on your blog, you must not know much right. Mexicans guarding Mexicans?
You are about as ignorant as they come....People born in America of Mexican decent are Americans you Dip Sh**. You don't have to be white to be an American.
You should know all of this already JOSE...lol
"Jose, can you see, by the dawn's early light..."
I DO NOT CARE IF THE MEXICAN BORDER AGENTS ARE LEGAL CITIZENS, YOU CAN'T TRUST MEXICANS TO KEEP MEXICANS OUT..IS STUPID, ONLY IN AMERICA..MANY DO LOOK THE OTHER WAY ALLOWING ILLEGALS TO PASS WHEN NO ONE IS LOOKING.. IS LIKE HAVING PRISONERS GUARDING PRISONERS.
First off, he is encouraging people to get in touch with their roots and maybe do something about the issues in Mexico that will eventually spill over into the US.
Here we go again, another person that believes that there is a conspiracy against Americans to take over..lol. Let me explain it to you..A 3rd world country borders the most wealthy (at least was), it doesn't take a genius to figure that one out. There is no group of Mexican's somewhere saying "Hey, lets go take over the US", people are so ignorant.
Any by the way...EUROPEANS ALREADY TOOK OVER AMERICA, you ignorant person!!!!!
@EMB2- Really? Close the public schools and that is going to make a difference? You're full of it! The point of this article has nothing to do with public schools! The point of this article is to be proud of your heritage, and learn something about where you and your family came from. After reading your comments I think you came from the planet Moron! Do I agree there are issues with some of the public school systems? You bet! There are indeed bad teachers and administrators. But that was not the subject here! I am a proud Scot-Irish and I love my Kilts! I wear 'em as often as I can just to mess with guys like you, and to allow the boys a little air! My wife loves my Kilts too for good reason! Dare to be different! Ireland and Scotland Forever!
Everyone should know their heritage, and where they came from good or bad. A certain genetic pool or trait can then be explained as to behavior, illness, etc. What Mr. Olmos is doing is an exciting journey for him, and shouldn't be made fun of. AND SINCE WHEN DID GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY BECOME AN ELECTIVE? WE NEED TO CLOSE THOSE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, FIRE THE SUPERINTENDENTS OF THOSE SCHOOL DISTRICTS, AND START ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!! No wonder we have so many brainless twits running around this country who are completely iliterate with their pants hanging down around their knees and their underwear showing!!!! Shame on our public schools, shame on our educational system, shame, shame, shame. Granted I found school a bore for the most part because of the other the stupidity, BUT I DID ENJOY THE LEARNING PROCESS!!!! Read children, read!!!!!!! If you can read, YOU CAN GO ANYWHERE!!!!!
Blah, blah, blah. Who Cares ??? I want y bowl of menudo.
I think it is very important to know where you come from in order to understand yourself better as Mr. Olmos says. Maybe if world history or geography was not an elective in many public schools in America our kids could learn from history and the world and not grow up and make the same mistakes we continue to make as a society and countries but have a better understanding for each other as human beings. There are many more things that unite us than divide us..
You usually learn about your heritage from your parents, grantparents and family members first then through research either on the web or through Salt Lake City, UT archives. American and World history is very important to study, your personal history is your own expense, not to be paid for with our tax dollars and put on the burden of our educational system. If Mexicans want to learn about their ancestors there are web sites for that.
but there is a HUGE difference between melting pot theory and ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION!
are people really so stupid to not see that and just think anyone who doesnt want this country ruined is rasict?
Dual citizenship should be illegal.
There should never be any cause of any kind that could create a conflict of loyalty.
It is the same as having two wives and two legal marriages in two different countries.
Someone gets cheated and cut short.
To all those racist/bigots posting here, go crawl back into your mothers womb and her crawl back into hers and so on until you all end up where you all began – an egg and spermatozoa in a far and foreign land.
And So The Destruction Of America Starts... If you are from any country, but one of your parents is an American, You can vote for Obama. So, virtually anybody, billions of people around the world, can find a geneology of an American to tap into, swamp the voter registration authorities who may, or may not, want to confirm the information, and they can vote for Obama from ANY foreign land. Oh Boy, ACORN on steroids. The great world "middle class", (read Union and Government Employees Only, just like Americans Only recognized middle class) can finally overrule anything, even without Soros. Yippee!!!
Is anyone out there interested in having CNN do a Latino in America episode that focuses on highly educated Latinos who are entrepreneurs, innovators, professors, business owners and economic contributors (instead of only Hollywood celebrities, athletes, suicidal teens, non-English speakers and other stereotypes that they have shown us so far?) Just curious to hear others' thoughts so I don't feel like a lone voice in the wilderness....as educated, professional, accomplished Latinos, we have so many phenomenal stories to share with our nation, yet CNN so far hasn't wanted to show them – anyone else notice this?
There are many people out there who are just like you. I have several neighbors that I didn't even know they were first generation American until I got to know them. They are melting into this wonderful pot called America. All CNN puts up is how the ones that are in your face Mexican or whatever. That is what irritates people. I don't sit and worry about my multicultural background. I am an American and enjoy the melting pot. I am not losing anything.
WHO CARES ABOUT THE EDUCATION OF MEXICANS-BUSINESSES THAT THEY HAVE–WHAT THEY ACCOMPLISH ? WE WANT OUR IMMIGRATION LAWS ENFORCE. JUST BECAUSE WE WANT OUR LAWS ENFORCE , WE ARE RACISTS ? YOU ARE STUPID FOR SAYING THAT....THE FACT IS THAT ILLEGALS DO NOT HAVE ANY DEFENSE , BUT TO ACCUSE PEOPLE OF BEING HATEFUL AND RACISTS....I'M A HISPANIC GUY, AM I RACISTS ? I'M NOT WHITE .
No, you are an idiot!!!
Imagin that.......a guy named JOSE talking about deportation.
They should deport you for writing like a 3 yr old, I met illegal immigrants that write better english than you...lol
Oh no, there's no such thing as a racist †eaGagger. Hahahaha!
Praise the heavens, and CNN, for this fresh breeze of unfettered racism.
Please to define this. As opposed to plain old garden variety racism.
I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH THOSE WHO ACCUSE US OF BEING RACISTS BECAUSE WEE WANT OUR IMMIGRATION LAWS ENFORCE. THAT IS NOT BEING RACISTS....AMERICA IS OVER POPULATED WITH PEOPLE , WE DO NOT NEED MORE PEOPLE PERIOD... WE DO NOT HAVE JOBS, WE DO NOT WANT MORE PEOPLE.. IF THAT IS RACISTS ? I DISAGREE...I CALL IT PROTECTING THE FEW JOBS THAT WE HAVE FOR AMERICAN CITIZENS...I CALL IT PUTTING AMERICA FIRST......TIME TO END ALL LEGAL IMMIGRATION, WE DO NOT HAVE THE JOBS TO CONTINUE ALLOWING MORE PEOPLE IN OUR COUNTRY...NO MAS TACOS.
Readers who tell other readers to "go back" to another country must be Native Americans. Which nation do you claim? Navajo? Sioux?
Gee, I think there must be more than two American Indian tribes. : )
ILLEGAL IS ILLEGAL , JUANNA. WHAT DO MEXICANS DO NOT UNDERSTAND ABOUT ? YOUR COUNTRY IS MEXICO , MAKE MEXICO WORK FOR YOU...YOU PEOPLE COME TO OUR COUNTRY TO DESTROYED –LOWER THE WAGES-TAKE GOOD JOBS FROM AMERICANS...WE DO NOT WANT YOU IN OUR COUNTRY..IF THAT IS RACISTS ?? I DISAGREE. I'M A HISPANIC GUY.
Would you believe John Garfield is my fatorive American actor? It's a shame he's nearly forgotten, at least in the popular memory. Admittedly some of that has to do with the quality of his films; Warner Bros never did right by him. You've probably seen Force of Evil (made after his contract ended and he struck out on his own) as it's been championed by Scorsese. If not, I highly recommend it as an excellent film noir. Nobody Lives Forcver is one of his best films and boasts very atmospheric noirish direction by Jean Negulesco. I wouldn't say I have a fatorive Scorsese film as he isn't a director whose work I return to and re-watch (although I tremendously admire many of his films!). I really enjoyed Goodfellas and Bringing Out the Dead. I've seen BOtD in the theater and on DVD and thought it was great both times, but also that it seemed like a very different movie the second time. Watching it on a small screen- and with non-immersive sound- it seemed much more (blackly) comic and far less intensely dramatic than in the theater.
ILLEGAL MEANS THAT YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSE TO BE IN AMERICA..YOU BROKE OUR LAWS..
CNN, nice of you to stop the commenting option. You bunch of Jew ßas†ards.
There are a lot of people who clicked into the article just to complain about he Mexicans. Her eis an idea, if you do not want to read the article, then don't. Just ignore it. You do realize that when you click you are increasing the ratings and thus increasing the liklihood of more article like this one in the future?
History plays tricks on people. I wouldn't be surprised if someday Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California end up on the Mexican side of the border.
Well they were part of Mexico for centuries longer than they have been part of America...
So, E nrique, You welcome the chance for Mexico to take over some/most of the United States?
I don't think E is welcoming Mexico to take back over these lands, he is merely stating a historical fact...however, it is true that borders are malleable and constantly changing in the grand scheme of things. This does not mean I welcome it, I am just stating a fact. I don't know why people paint the word with a simple "us against them" face, the world is much more complex than that. Ignorant, lazy people paint it that way.
ARIZONA–CALIFORNIA-SAN DIEGO-TEXAS IS ALREADY MEXICO, LOL...IT LOOKS LIKE MEXICO..WE DO NOT WANT THE REST OF OUR COUNTRY TO LOOK LIKE CALIFORNIA.. IF THAT IS RACISTS ? I DISAGREE....I'M A HISPANIC GUY...
Good article if you are of Hispanic origins. However, everybody including those doing the research knows that a majority number, well over what is being report, are here ILLLEGALLY! So they try to trump those numbers into the legal groups for some sort of moment. I have ZERO respect for them to be honest. The disrespect for the flag, laws, peoples, the list goes on. I have lost all respect for them. And feel for the ones that game here legally! CNN is merely marketing stories for this group the same way they did African Americans. Enough already. They are not special. If they want their history, head on back down SOUTH of the border and stay!
The more mixed race and culture we are the better this country will be. If people are against any culture or race after that then they must hate themselves also for being from more than one culture or ethnic background. Intelliegence comes in all shapes ,forms, cultures and race.
yea thats all good, i believe that too.
but there is a HUGE difference between what u say and ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION!
are people really so stupid to not see that and just think anyone who doesnt want this country ruined is rasict?
Regards to your last sentence. I believe that also applies to "lack of intelligence."
Im mexican, puerto rican, spanish, aztec indian & french. i am wat i am. my great grandparents were born in the 20s. they immigrated from san louis potosi in mexico. my grandparents 1 born & bred in texas another born & bred in chicago. my husbands grandfathers family immigrated from sweden. this problem we have wit illegals is a serious problem. i understand that ppl come here 4 the land of opportunity but how can they jus come here illgally & not do anything 2bcome legal. its a big slap in the face 2 every u.s. immigrant that bcame a citizen.
From everything I've read, illegal immigrants are going home due to the ailing economy. And apparently under the Obama administration, the deportation of illegals engaged in criminal activity is up 67%.
With all that fine lineage, it would have been nice is someone had passed down some brains.
You say- "And apparently under the Obama administration, the deportation of illegals engaged in criminal activity is up 67%. "
I Say-Great! Only 11.5 million illegals to go. :-)
Lady, Amen to that, :)
They are the second largest group in America, Whopee Do! And no I am not interested in news for just white people I am interested in news that affects all Americans and my world. This section seems to exist in order to give the talentless Soledad O'brian something to do. And CNN is also hedging it's bets since most people don't watch them so they have to appeal to a new audiance. The Majority of American citizens are more concerned with jobs and paying bills and having a government that works. But it's typical of the media to divide us all into little ethnic groups so we will watch there crappy channels. Fox does not appea to me and CNN is quickly loosing it as well.
How about you leave this section then and look up stuff that does interest you. Simple as that, some people do want to read this and are interested.
I guess you mean like the other salient news offering CNN has featured for American viewers:
• Vietnamese man with 180 pound tumor
• Divine dating
• Rihanna is tops in digital sales
• Isaac Mizrahi Weds Arnold Germer
• New Facebook looks baffles some
• Khloe Kardasian get punked
• Burnet versus Colbert
• Video of foul-laden game goes viral
• X-factor winner talks new contract
• Amanda Knox's new life
• Casey Anthony's new Internet diary
• Ridiculous: Anderson vs Weebles
• Are the Cowboys still America's team
• Back to Jersey Shore
• Belief Blog: where every Sunday, different religious perspectives are discussed
I could go on indefinitely. The point is that not everything on CNN is breaking news. And with 30 million Americans being Mexican, it seems like offering stories that are relevant to them would be prudent. Don't look now, but your bigotry is showing.
Hey Pal, reference your last judgemental statement.
You should not look, since your "liberalism" is showing.
if you didn't want to read the article than don't click on it. They wrote a story because there is a story to write. This census is a big deal for millions of people. You are not one of them, so feel free to skip the article.
It was interesting to find my grandparents, as well as my mother and her siblings. It was also interesting to note that though most of my aunts and uncles had been born in Mexico, their nationality was listed as Lebanese (my grandparents imigrated from Lebananon). I recall that my mother told me she had to apply for Mexican citizenship when she turned 21. Mexico doesn't grant birth right citizenship, even for those legally in the country.
G another race based artical by a CNN writer, now theres a supprise.
If you don't like it, don't read it. That is what freedom is all about.
@ TAK anti-semite and anti-Mormon remarks belong on a KKK webpage. Ignorance and bigotry is alive and well in America still.
Yeppers and that come from all races, so whats new?
That's right, this particular page is solely for racism directed at Mexicans.
GEEZUS! With so many worse things being said about the Mexicans on this page, it's odd that you take TAK to task on some esoteric genealogy reference. But people with an agenda are going to do what comes natural. Hmmm... anti-Semitism, I wonder where that came from?
Would they please stop! With respect, these kinds of articles, while quaint, do nothing for anyone. I'm sure it's nice to reflect on U.S. history since 1930, but hey, that doesn't change the fact that groups of various descents were doing their thing here in 1607. And communities were here for many, many years before even that. U.S. "history" didn't begin with a Mexican census in 1930....
I believe family and cultural history is very important to all Americans. Whether it's the past history and traditions of Mexican-Americans, or the history and traditions of Southerners. You can't advocate for one set of American history to the exclusion of others. Let's just get all the truth out there and stop worrying about who we offend. No on who is not from these groups will be harmed by the truth. But it enhances our understanding of why things are the way they are today. It's this type of ignorance, of trying to silence truth, that makes people think of The Battle Flag of the Confederacy as a symbol of racism. This flag is part of American history. It's because we hide from the real history, that racists are able to use the symbol for their corrupted agenda.
Did you even read the article? For millions of people this is a very interesting and possibly important piece of news. Just because it is not affecting you personally does not mean it isn't important to others.
Another race article by race-pandering CNN. It's only making me prouder of my European heritage. Oh wait, that's racist, huh? We are all supposed to care about and respect everyone's "roots" except white people. Give me a break.
I can't believe you said "European".... and white? What are you, a Klansman? You need to get back on your needs and pay respect to the non-whites.... and never, ever notice any of your own races accomplishments! Got that? Good. You can be an American again.
Where getting to be a minority so it's our right to complain about other races just like they do us.
You don't have to care, noone forced you to click on the article.
It's no worse than the religious pandering we get every Sunday. You'd think CNN was an affiliate of the 700 Club.
Well Nancy, don't get your pan†¡es in a twist. If you don't like an article, just don't read it.
I thought that the election of Obama put us in a "Post Racial" america. Since then everyday on CNN they have Black in America, Latino this Black that. Does the left only view things based on race? This must be Post Racial I guess?
And do you only view things as a right/left binary? You're just as bad as those you speak against.
Owen kazembe Posted on I have a Bachelors Degree in Literacy Education and cutnrrely am teaching at a Teachers Training College.Would you assist me in getting a Masters scholarship with full funding in Early Childhood Education and Care?
The US has developed it's own, very freaky, cultural race fetish. We will not give it up easily. We obsessively pound the carpet for grains of racism (usually "subtle racism").... we (both blacks and whites) aren't happy unless we can find instances in which something appears to have "racist" overtones.
and noone is making you read the articles. CNN is a private corporation based on profits. Millions of people are interested in non white news. If you want the ratings to go down, stop clicking into articles just to complain that they are not about your race.
Take a look around at the racism screaming from these post and ask yourself if racism is dead. Stop the phony act and admit that racism is alive and well in America. It's here to stay... let's at least be honest about it, then we can move on in that reality. Happily hating each others guts.
"George Ryskamp, associate professor of history at Brigham Young University..."
I wouldn't let a mormon anywhere near old census data. They're going to use it for those posthumous baptisms.
“Many of us should take into consideration that, if your parents were born in Mexico, then you can become a Mexican citizen and that gives you opportunities to vote,” Olmos said. Then become a Mexican citizen, move to Mexico and vote. Dual citizenship creates a myriad of potential conflicts. If you're a Mexican citizen and also hold U.S. citizenship, which country do you support when one opposes an action by the other country. As a voting block, do Mexican citizens voting here wield undue power in continuing Mexican efforts to reclaim former Mexican territory in our Southwest.
The ability to adopt dual citizenship is rather recent – mid to late 90s. The Mexican govt wanted a large lobby in the US that would vote in ways that would benefit Mexico. As a senior minister said at the time – 'when they go to vote, we want them to think Mexico, first.'
Dual citizenship is common... especially among Europeans. There are people who hold dual citizenship with Russia and the US... our old arch enemy. If you want to scream about something, scream about that. Come on, stop the charade. Admit you're a bigot; you'll be happier for it.
Dual citizenship has always seemed like a split loyalty to me. Pick a country already. I'm not sure I believe the Pledge of Allegiance is necessary .. but it seems a contradiction to say these words and claim citizenship in another country as well.
It seems a contradiction to you, maybe. Or maybe you just see things in black and white.
Hey, there you go again, using racist terms. :> )
What the hell are you talking about? I'm a dual American-British citizen and I probably care about this nation more than many so-called "patriots" (those "patriots" also happen to be the ones running it into the ground, but I digress). I vote, I'm an activist, I stand up for what I believe in and for what I believe would make this nation better, which is a hell of a lot more than most Americans can say.
There is no "split loyalty," that's just something you're making up in your mind so you can have another group of people to pick on. Don't speak for dual citizens unless you are one, simple as that.
That's one of the dumbest arguments this U.S. Army vet has ever heard-and I've heard many. That's rather like Quisling.
John McCain holds dual citizen ship with the US and Panama. He's decorated Vietnam War pilot. I don't think anyone has ever questioned his patriotism. You may want to pull your head out of your black and white world.
This country was invaded by Europeans who stayed and built up the country. Asians also were part of building our West and Mexicans our SW. But the Dutch, French, Chinese and Russian descendants don't have an organization like La Raza (The Race) trying to effect La Reconqista (The Reconquest) of this country for their country of origin. Mexico is still angry that we beat them on the battlefield during the Mexican-American War (1846). After that we annexed California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas and incorporated them into the United States. So all these years later they are still stomping their feet and whining about the loss. Mexico is a big country with lots to offer – maybe they should spend this reconquest energy trying to fix what's wrong down there instaead of bringing it up here. They'd be alot happier and be better neighbors.
They won't fix their own country because they are cowards and lazy. They are like those ants who go through jungles eating and destroying everything in their path. Much easier than actually doing something to be proud of.
Wow! Racism trumps education, intelligence and historical facts. You must be a follower of Fox News, a Republican, and a far right believer, and as the a recent report identified those who are far right, fox news wathchers and republicans are less educated, You certainly need to get out of your "trailer" and move into the 20th century, while trying to "read and understand" your history and your current events.
Spoken like a true redneck !!
Do you consider making comments on CNN from your trailer park to be "doing something"?
Carole – Bigorty much? You may want to change your pan†¡es, that not so fresh feeling can really run your perspective on life.
That the best you can do Mikey – change my panties? If you don't agree with my premise, knock it down with logic or facts but what you used was kind of childish.
There's a great quote from an earlier "reconquest", that of the Christians to retake Spain in 1492. Besides sending Columbus out, Isabella & Ferdinand fought to reclaim Spain from the Moslem Berbers. As they came crashing thru the front gate of Granada, the last emir and his mother ran out the back. When far enough away he looked back at the beautiful city he'd ruled and started to cry. His mother rounded on him and shouted "Do not weep like a child for what you could not hold as a man!" You remember the bombing of the Madrid train station a few years ago? That was the Moslems trying to reconquer Spain. I guess nothing ever changes. Maybe we could station the troops coming home fron Central Asia down on the border, might work. That's not bigotry, that's history Mike.
AH, correct spelling much? I'm gonna take a WAG and say that you meant to type "ruin" vs run. No. : )
Bigotry. SO much bigotry. I don't mind if you don't like Olmos, but the Mexican bigotry is terrible.
looks like CNN struck out again. Edward James ALmost has a history of excessive bias and racism.
New Obama campaign Slogan?? "Anchor Babies for Obama"
Oh yeah I like it. It has that certain something. :>)
A Mexican census? This must be from a long time ago when Mexicans stayed in Mexico. Nowadays in order to do a Mexican census, you have to do it in Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas! Probably New York City too!
We're just Americans of Mexican descent. Some of our ancestors were born in TX, CA, etc. Where are you from ...immigrant ??
All of the places you mentioned except NY were in fact part of Mexico as late as the mid-19th century. URNidEit.
yes. and my people, the miwok indians from california, were not happy with the occupation of our lands by mexico. we helped to kick them back.
What many of you so called "Americans" do not realize is that the border crossed us, we did not ctross the border. So instead of wanting to send "Mexicans" back to Mexico, maybe it's "you" who should leave. And take your drug habits with you!
It never ceases to amaze me but CNN really should change it's name to the Spanish channel or the Latino News Network, because all they seem to care about is issues facing the Latin community and not America as a whole. It's good that they are the thrird watched news channel behind Fox..At least Fox makes no myth about being bias.. But frankly I am tired of these specials like Black and latino in America
CNN, like the U.S.A., had a really good run. Sadly and unnecessarily, both are done ... for the same reason.
1) These issues DO affect America as a whole, if you would look outside your own ethno-centric bias 2) Want white people news?? Go check out the clip CNN posted (front page) of Casey Anthony's new piercings and hair color. Happy now?
I guess you didn't understand that we are the 2nd largest group in America.
dude, OLD PEOPLE WATCH TV and younger, better educated people use the internet for news. CNN is #1 for internet news while fox doesn't even make the top 5. no one is envious of fox's old demographic.
CNN Chicano News Network. I like it!
Well, stay tuned for "White in America". Or not. : )
I AGREE.. CNN SHOULD BE MORE CONCERN WITH WHAT ILLEGALS ARE DOING TO OUR COUNTRY...LOWERING THE WAGES-TAKING GOOD JOBS FROM AMERICANS--CNN SHOULD BE ASKING POLITICIANS AND THE PRESIDENT WHY THEY ARE NOT GOING AFTER EMPLOYERS WHO CONTINUE TO BREAK OUR LAWS BY HIRING ILLEGALS. CNN SHOULD BE ASKING , WITH SO MUCH UNEMPLOYMENT, WHY IS LEGAL IMMIGRATION OPEN FOR BUSINESS ?? THOSE ARE THE QUESTIONS THEY SHOULD BE ASKING.
I loooove Usonian! America = North America + Central America + South America.
Shouldn't it be "Usanian"? I kind of like it too! I say we start a movement to start using Usanian instead of American. Makes us sound Eastern Europeanish though ... oh well.
Really,, does it matter,,at the end we're just people with different ideas,,besides who decided to label us the Government,,,,,you're a hispanic, latino,,,I really don't care,,,It what thr public percieves to be be when they see you....
Olmos is a racist.
I find it interesting when I read these posts that some of you "get it" and some of you are morons. 1st if your American your from th USA, natives here didn't call this place America so Europeans names it and get to use the name. 2nd we are Americans because the name of our country "The united States of America" we are the only nation on the American continent that has the word America in it name. So Usonia wouls not work. Get an education out of La-Razza studies and no Mexicans are not the supeior race, look at Mexico. No race is supeior. But nations are and The U.S.A. Is the greatest nation on earth.
Thank you so much for this article, CNN! I checked out the website and found some of my ancestors from the early twentieth century! :)
Your comment .. if it's even real .. is exactly the cherry on top needed by this paid advertisement masquerading as journalism.
Good now maybe you can go to Mexico and stay there. ;)~ lmfao
@ Ron, So based on heritage, a person should move back to where their family came from? How about you? Are you Native American? Probably not...hell, you are probably too afraid to look into your genetic heritage to see what you might find. Gasp...your ancestors may not be of pure good ol' American ancestry
My mother was born in Mexico. I am bilingual and speak Spanish fluently. My father is 3rd generation German and Romanian. I understand what you are saying about investigating your roots and being concerned about what happens. I have done some of this and I am concerned. However, my concern over Mexico has far more to do with the proximity to us than the accidental fact that my mother was born there. I have always hated the insinuation from either side of my family that I have to choose if I am "Latino" or "White" or whatever. But when someone asks me "what are you?" I answer "I'm American". If they are nice I usually follow up by telling them that my mother was born in Guadalajara and my father was born in the Bronx and half German, half Romanian. Many people will just hear "Hispanic". I also have never liked having to choose a heritage on the census. I am proud of who I am and who my parents are. But at what point, if ever, do we become simply "Americans"?
Right on! I am an American with roots from Mexico. I am not hispanic, latino or any other tag.
You are American and have best of both world; your European and Latino cultures and heritage. One would be privileged to learn from both!
Ray, I agree with you in many ways. I am a first generation American and my parents are both Mexican.
People always say that we should only identify ouselves as American but they themselves do not see it that way...I have friends of all ethnicities, I do not discriminate.
But truth be told, when people identify each other it doesn't matter, they will always say "that white guy" or "that Mexican guy", so on and so forth. So society can't get mad at people identifying themselves as something other than American, because society does that first.
If you want to help fix Mexico, move back or don't leave in the first place.
But don't kid yourself in thinking that by voting from the safety of the U.S. you are doing ANYTHING to help Mexico's people.
And I think it's way beyond time for people to stop trying to define themselves by their ancestry or race.
and that's because most americans don't what the heck they are anymore. shame
I think what Eddie Olmos forgot to mention, that also "people" (Businessmen, Landowners) like my family were driven out of Mexico by the 1910 Revolution. Comparable to the Cuban Revolution and Hugo Chavez Revolution in Venezuela. My family had to forfeit their productuve business and land to the People's Mexican Revolution of 1910, or be "shot". In reading Eddie Olmos story it is quite different from my family history, and after the Revolution my family wanted to return to Mexico, but the People's Government of Pancho Villa delayed that, and by all accounts we loss our land and business to the 1910 Revolutionary Government of Mexico. It is funny though, Eddie Olmos comes from the same town in California as I do, he lived in the South, while I lived in the north. But our Histories our quite different, and in a way what did the 1910 Revolution accomplish? In my view "nothing"
sounds like your folks were on the wrong side.
Bravo, Bill... You just put 'everything' in honest perspective. I'm from Miami, and I know many many Cubans who are Americans not necessarily by choice, but are proud to be Americans, and not take advantage of or want to destroy the U.S.
I think allot of people forget that allot of Mexican-Americans were driven north in 1910, not by choice but because of the Politics of that time. My family was lucky because we came in through Colombus, NM and at that time NM was still a Territory of the US (Just for your info NM celebrated this pass week its 100th year of Statehood). But as I said, what did the Revolution of 1910 accomplish in Mexico? Nothing! If it indeed accomplished its "goals" their would be no illegal immigration at this time, the lands that were -re-distributed to the "people" of Mexico would be productive lands, which they are not. All in all, as I said its like the Socialist Revolutions the world over, maybe at that time it was one step forward, but eventually afterwards its 10 steps backwards. I do not see Paradise in Mexico, Cuba, and Venezuela..in fact I feel sorry for the people because the Gov's have implanted the mentality of poverty which Dictators like Chavez, Castro, and the Government of Mexico thrive on this persecution complex.
Good comments Bill.
In the same way that Mexicans escaped the revolution in 1910, most now and against their free will, as they are the starving crowd, leave their homes in México in order to have a humane life in the US. And most Americans welcome these hard working people who just want to work and lead descent lives (there is a small percentage that take advantage of the system and good will of Americans, but they are the least.)
BS propaganda article.
Mexican = From Mexico. Not Hispanic or Latino.
Hispanic = European from Spain. Not Mexican.
Latino = European from Italy. Not Mexican.
Quit trying to inflate your numbers by claiming to be someone you are not. Just Google "people of Spain""people of Italy""people of Mexico" and look at IMAGES if you're still having trouble understanding.
So answer some real questions. If Latinos are the No. 2 group who's No. 1 and what ranking are Mexicans? If there are 50.5 million Hispanics in the U.S. how many Mexicans are here? You say 31.8 million Americans are of Mexican decscent. Does that number include Latinos and Hispanics who are not Mexican? How many Mexicans are born in the United States each year?
I agree... There are apparently over 100 million people in America who are Mexican/Hispanic/Latino. I know that White Male Christian Conservatives are the most hated minority in America. But who hears them? And they truly are a minority. And they are hated.
They are only dispised for their hatred of all things not like them, so get off the victim platform .
Explain why white male Christian conservatives are the most hated. I am truly interested in why you think this.
I'm a white male American and the truth is only BIGOTED, white, male Americans are a minority....you guys can all pout together while the rest of us real Americans enjoy what we have
Hey Amigo, you forgot one.
Hispanic= Of Spanish decent
Latin= Of Italian decent
Most of the Mexican people are what you call Mestizos, meaning a mix of European and Native mix. In Mexico that being Spanish, that why they speak it, get it?
So most Mexicans are Hispanic
And Visa Versa... Yippee!!!
nope, I'm american, not to say I don't care about mexico or any other country but I identify as american only and I think we will be better off without these dual allegiances
Everyone from the Arctic Circle to the tip of Tierra del Fuego is an American. So I am guessing that you mean you are a United States citizen.
FYI: No other country from the tip of the Arctic Circle to the tip of Tierra del Fuego has America in its name.
Do we really need ANOTHER article about this actor and the census? This is the second article CNN posted about this actor and his latino, chico, essays, chicano's, or whatever the hell they call each other finding their roots. Okay, we get it now. Search your family history, make a Selena part 2 movie, mow a lawn, eat a few tacos, and shut up already.
Relax K...go back inside your trailer
WOW....I'm betting that you would never say that to someone face to face.
We are first USONIANS then Americans. Why because a person from Mexico, Canada or from any of the Americas is also an American. A person from the USA is a USONIAN. But why has this word been hidden and not used? Because by calling us irish, mexican, greek or afro americans it helps to keep us divided by powers of the gillded age blue bloods. Through lies, manipulation, propaganda, and specific words the powers to be can control the masses alot easier than trying to control a nation of nationalist called the USONIANS.
USONIAN? Good luck getting that to catch on. I'm an American and will always be.
yes you are an American but you are also a Usonian. It will take educating the masses. When you get a chance
Read about Frank Lloyd Wright and the Usonian Way.
Olmos is a paid spokesman for Ancestry.com. Enough said.
Exactly...he's doing his homework.
I have Irish heritage, however, I don't think of myself as anything but an American. My grandfather who was born in Ireland and came to the US didn't think of himself as anything but an American. The problem with the new wave of immigrants is that they don't fully embrace what it means to be American. I think the idea of dual-citizenship is fine, assuming you spend time in both countries and have a truly vested interest in what happens there. But I have no business voting in Ireland and American citizens should not be influencing elections or policies in any country but their own.
I agree wholeheartedly. My husband's grandfather came from Sweden. He was notified shortly after that he had inherited some rich land in Sweden. He turned it down stating he was now American and that was that.
I agree....and most Americans of mexican descent feel the same way. But our skin color makes it more difficult sometimes. You have to agree there is some biggotry going on here.
Bigotry is just used by bullies. Skin color doesn't make you any different, it just lets you see who the idiots are.
I DISAGREE......WANTING THE IMMIGRATION LAWS ENFORCE , MAKE YOU A BIGOT ?? HOW STUPID CAN YOU GET IF YOU THINK THAT...AMERICA IS A COUNTRY OF LAWS.....THE FACT IS THAT ILLEGAL, MEANS ILLEGAL.. YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSE TO BE HERE......I REST MY CASE...
What defines you?
