TV One's 'Find Our Missing' premiere draws new tips

Editor's note: Dr. Drew and his guests explored the issue of whether the media ignores missing minorities. Watch "Dr. Drew" at 9 p.m. ET and PT weeknights on HLN.

By Sarah Springer, CNN

(CNN) –The series premiere of TV One's “Find Our Missing" on Wednesday has already drawn new tips on some missing persons cases.

"Find Our Missing," hosted by “Law & Order” actress S. Epatha Merkerson, documents unsolved cases of missing black people in the United States. The premiere episode shared the stories of 47-year-old Pamela Butler, who disappeared in 2009 in Washington, D.C., and 5-year-old Hasanni Campbell, who vanished in Oakland, California, that same year. Eight more stories will be shared throughout the season.

The cases come from the files of The Black and Missing Foundation Inc., , which helps publicize cases of missing people of color in the United States.

The organization, founded in 2008 by sisters-in-law Derrica and Natalie Wilson, has seen a huge jump in web traffic and some new tips since the show aired, Natalie Wilson said.

Derrica Wilson, the organization’s president and CEO, said the show provides awareness about missing people whose stories often go under-reported in traditional media. The organization has helped reunite a number of families using a tip line, emergency alerts, social media and other sources. The show's website includes message boards and other platforms to help people share information.

“This show complements the efforts of the foundation," Derrica Wilson said. “Right now there is no platform. We don’t have any platforms such as this series to bring attention to missing persons of color.”

Craig Henry, director of programming and production for TV One, said cases involving missing black people are often overlooked because of stereotypes surrounding the black community.

“I just think that the general belief about black people is that most of us live in impoverished conditions and crime is a regular part of our lives. When you hear about people who happen to be missing, we are a bit desensitized, unfairly so, to black people and crime,” Henry said.

“Once we developed the idea we found there was an overwhelming volume of cases, the best ones were the ones that really had a lot of unanswered questions, but they also had to be of diverse backgrounds."

The show includes interviews and re-enactments that tell the story from the day the person went missing.

“We wanted to take more of a mystery story approach," Henry said. “The best thing would be to talk to these people and then do re-creations to pull it all together to get a well-rounded story.

“It’ll remind you of people you know. To think that someone would vanish without a shred of evidence is unthinkable, if you can imagine. The viewer is left wanting answers, too, and that’s where they do their call to action to submit information and to get involved."

Although TV One’s audience is predominantly black, Henry doesn’t believe that will hinder outreach to a broader audience.

“We are focused on black Americans because they are so disproportionately represented. The point is we felt that it was important to utilize our audience, which is primarily an African-American audience, to help," he said. “The more the black community is aware of how disproportionately we are being affected by a missing persons cases, they will start going to their media outlets. They’ll begin expecting more from their communities and the people that support them, which will break outside of the immediate grouping.

"'Please get involved, call this number' - I think that’s a powerful message.”

Ther eisnt a single European nation on the face of the planet that does not trace its fortune back to crime against Africans, not one, and these petty pale theifs today have the audacity to say ,get your own money. The immigrants in america are following their fortunes from el salvador, from nicaragua, they follow their money and the whites say, go back home an cal them nasty names..are you seeing a pattern, they have never ever done anything but steal, exploit, rape and murder. How could you possibly expect them to relate to anyone on the earth, they have foul words on the lips and cling to their stolen spoils, what they dont realize is the resources and things dont mean anything, we are a single human family, but they place all things and resources as greater value and drive themselves to an insanity. The lack of genetic diversity in the biological makeup means they will continue to have greater incidence of genetic afflications, weaker eyes, weaker skin, weaker muscle mass, they will die out in their greed. They cannot come to the table of brotherhood, the Natives taught them to live and they butchered them, the chinese invited them in and the opium wars, the Africans invited them in and look there, the People of india invited them in and look. There isnt a single interaction in the history of the world or people where this warlike animal has not demonstrated the inability to join the human family without stealing, raping murdering and lying about having done it...Then their petty progeny rape everything on the earth with sandusky scholarships and Priests altering boys in the rectory, they are sick. They used to get in their sunday best, pull out food and a band and light a slave on fire, put him out before death, cut off fingers and toes and genitals and make jewlery and hang them around the necks of their children and wives for over 500 years, this is a beast, do you think that doesnt scar their physche forever, is it even possible they could do that and not be made sick...We should never touch their hands, their children we should completely get away from them. The lack of genetic divrsity by definition makes them sub-human.

If there was no historical basis for these points, then perhaps I could be dismissed as a Hater, I can provide historical reference for every single assertion, It is not hate to relay a fact.

!1 Sentence response to all the poor afflicted reverse racism criers..in 2011 a White man was stabbing Black men to DEATH and killed 15 of them before ANY news station even gave us a heads up as to where this was happening, description, nothing...10 years ago 17,000 aborted fetus were found behind a California laboratory 90 percent were black, 5 years ago 300 Black boys disappeared from British society, only 2 were ever found, case closed...

In 1963 a census question asked white america if they thought all things were equal racially in relation to access to Jobs, housing, Education, healthcare and ever metric along the human equation, 85 % answered yes..this was the year of Medgar Evers...Dont even waste time trying to convince them, they cling to their purses and cannot see how every white nation on this earth traces its financial stability to the Crime against ours..so Stop trying to educate them, work on our agendas and our minds and close the faucet of African resources to them, THEN see how much they are more open to actual conversation.

The first publicized and actual EMPIRICAL use of binary numbers was done by a German, it's very likely but not empirically proven that the greeks used it as well.... I have no clue where you're getting your.... ahem... fallaciously amusing "bone from 37,000" years ago... no doubt probably from some prejudice based afro/black panther party. Pedantism is a good thing when done objectively.

The point some of us are trying to make is most white individuals could care less if you have a black only missing person's site. Most of the white race could care less if you have black only anything. The POINT being made is if the white race would have anything restricted simply to whites, all hell would break lose. There would be fires, shootings, marching in the streets, law suits, Jessie and friends would be there, etc. What is acceptable for the black race should be acceptable to ALL races.

The reason that shows like this highlight African Americans is because often the news does not report them missing. News outlets often think of ratings, and nothing draws in more ratings than young, White, blonde haired women. Not to say that if they go missing people shouldn't go looking for them either, but what can a parent of a Black child do when media outlets refuse to circulate information regarding a missing child? It's not racist, it's reality. We are still struggling with the race question many decades later even when it comes to missing persons. The best thing anyone can do if they want this to not be "racist," is demand that ALL missing people get equal coverage on t.v. and radio and amber alerts feature people of color as well. Until that happens....well then....foundations for African Americans and other people of color will continue to exist.

White people live in an entire society steered towards their interests. Almost everything is geared towards their enjoyment and they just can't take stuff that doesn't focus on them. I bet no white person born in America could handle a world where they aren't the majority.

Actually, White MEN are the ones who are dominating everything. Gender discrimination is far more important to address than racial.

Did I see some irrational statement that Gender discrimination is far more important.

This is the problem with the European mindset, it tries to assign a value where none belongs, ANY Disparity creates a rift that can potentially never be repaired. However a breif view of the American suffrage movement reveals that the demure white woman learned the principals , resilience and strength to assert herself, from where...Oh right..from Mammies, so Black women whispered in her ear to stand up and that she deserved, well what happned, did my Grandmother get promoted with that white woman, NO so you can keep your Gender discriminations and all other poisons you have unleashed upon the earth. Every single port the European arrived at from the SECOND HE LEARNED he brought his rape and discriminations and nasty names for the people, EVERY single plot of earth since 311 B.C.E

Today all they can do is defend their right to the lions share and the loudest voice in all affairs, there isnt a single life form on the face of the earth that has not been infected with the knowledge of what they want, like, feel, need.

I hope one day we can stop seeing in color. We should all be color blind. And what makes it worse it to read stories like this and then read the comments posted afterwards. And from where I stand I see ignorant comments coming from both sides. When someone goes missing, they need all the media attention they can get to be brought home regardless of whether they are Caucasian, African America, Hispanic, Asian or Indian. And we really need to stop referring to one another as "Whites" or "Blacks". A person is a person and ignorant is ignorant regardless or race or skin color. A lot of you guys need to check yourselves and grow up. We can't be equal if we're always playing the race card.

My mom is white and my dad is black. They have been married for 22 years. When they started dating they snuck around and when people found out, people did have a problem with it. When they got married behind my grandparents back, they decided not to care about all the stupid opinions. They were happy. They put up with the looks, words, and hate from people who didn't approve of their relationship. My parents can now go anywhere and not be looked at like their a disease. People have changed and things have changed. Yes their are those who still have a problem but now that problem is frowned upon. No one cares anymore except for the few who refuse to accept change. The show could have been named something different, but this show is about all the people who weren't blessed to see this change and fell through the cracks because it didn't come sooner. Me and my siblings are all biracial, we fall under both categories. I'm tired of people being angry over a black show. There are plenty of shows that feature missing people, the majority of them are white people. This being because the media feels they are a bigger story and will get more sympathy and coverage. Now that there is a show that is for black people only, some have a problem. Their issues shouldn't be with the show and what it represents, it should be with the things in our past that made it come to this point for the forgotten. IDC if you have denial about the past. The reality is black people didn't always recieve what they deserved and for those who are lost, their family most likely never got the investigation that would have been giving to white people. This show is about giving those people a chance to get justice for what happend to them and/or a chance for their families to see them again. This show isn't rascist, it's an opportunity for the people who never had a chance to be found in a time where people were very ignorant and a time where some media feel that the only story that can help their stupid rating are ones about white girls put in dumb situation and things happen. Everyone matters and everyone deserves a chance to be found whether it's media about a white person or a show for black people.

So- I read many of the comments that have been posted and I figure..why not bring some actual research into the mix...
First, I think anytime a news outlet focuses on missing people, it is a good thing...it does not matter what the reason or color of the person is. These people are missing and need to be found. PERIOD. I think that everyone can agree to that, at least, I would hope. For those making this into an issue about welfare and clubs...let's really look at that. First, research will show that the majority of those on welfare are white. The only reason people believe differently is because of the inability to do research while believing the race baiting that often goes along with media coverage. Now, that being said, in some states the percentages of one race being on welfare is much more prevalent depending on the majority of race in those states (obviously), however, overall whites are at a much higher percentage than other races. The other piece that has been argued is the "clubs", "colleges", and other places where races can claim as their "own". This is laughable to me as there are still plenty of clubs that are for "whites" only and for those that believe this not to be true, do the research. Many country clubs in cities are "whites only", or what about white supremacists? Is that not a club for whites only? How many "secret" fraternities exist for "whites only". The only difference is that white people try to be more undercover about their clubs and gatherings. I love the melting pot that should exist in our country...however...we are a long way from truly reaching acceptance if the comments on here are any indication. If you have previous knowledge of the missing people on this show before it aired..good for you...but I suspect you didn't and if it doesn't make you think about how you can help ANYONE that is missing..then you have completely missed the point of the entire article.

The only thing that matters are the people that are missing whether they are black or white that need to be found. If anyone needs to grow up it is you. I guess you love to see when something comes up about black people so you can comment something crazy and dumb as quick as you can. Missing persons isnt the only thing the media is bias about....politics is another. This is a great show. Whether you like it or not, people go missing every single day. We do not get national coverage on them all, but if you look at the storys that are put out there, they are predominantly white. That is the media choosing what stories to put on the air. Does it really matter if this show is an outlet for the black community to join together and try to help find the missing? 20 years ago, racism was still extremely perverse in everything. Things ARE and have gotten better. This show is taking a look at those cases that got no attention years ago in hopes to find peace for their FAMILIES. I think instead of saying "this is racist" maybe you should watch the show and see if there is a way to help. Crying racisim is exactly what you claim the black community does on a daily basis. Maybe, one person at a time, we can start to truly overcome....from both sides! I think it is a great show. it is sad when ANYONE is taken from their family. Everyone, regardless of their skin color, has a mother or father or someone that will miss and does miss them everyday. NO ONE deserves to live with that pain! I hope this show gains momentum!

There is nothing wrong with a portion of the population feeling that they are under-represented and speaking out about it. We are talking about missing victims of crime! We should all be doing anything we can to find out what happened to ALL of these poor people anyway possible. CobraKiller, I have a feeling if this was a Native American show, or an Asian-American show, you wouldn't object as strongly, or as loudly. I as a white person do see the difference in coverage, but it is a basic concept of the media at fault. Sensationalism sells. Every journalism grad student knows that.

Really Katie? I think the "show" you're talking about is called the general media. You already have a show my friend. Obviously if things were equal as far as media coverage for black people, this organization wouldn't need to exist right? Think about it. It's really funny to me when white people complain about black colleges or any black organization. If you were the minority in a country, wouldn't you want some type of organization looking out for you? Obviously this country is going to do more for the majority whether it were white or any other color. Minorities make up a much smaller portion of the population, obviously they are going to get railroaded at times which is why organizations like this exist. Stop taking is so personal, like it's an attack on you.

Yes, minorities DO make up a much smaller portion of the population. But really, you think black people get railroaded?? How could that EVER happen, it’s NOT happening because it’s not allowed to happen. Not with the NAACP, Rev Jesse Jackson, and others like them always lurking and at the ready for a fight. Btw, the minority in this country is really becoming no longer about black, Asian, Hispanic, etc. Nope, the minority is becoming about white people. Since the high rate of groups like Hispanics and other nationals coming into this country, having one child after another as well, white people are very soon going to be the minority. How can we not take this offensive and racist show personally, Candice?! White people are not allowed to do anything remotely close to that, so why are black people allowed to do it? Special treatment because of the NAACP lurking in the shadows is why they’re allowed to get away with it. *smh*

"Finding Our Own" sounds like a pick and choose type of segregation: It's not all right to seperate people based on race, but we're going to be selfish and self-serving when it comes to a select race of choice. People go missing everyday for whatever reason. When it's a domestic problem, not a lot of coverage by the media will make things go faster. Look at poor Nicole Brown-Simpson: everyone forgot about her and were constantly worried about OJ.

Quit making this a racial issue when it's not.

With some getting in with the wrong croud or wrong area of Maryland.

I watch that channel religiously and your right it does show all races. Sometimes I think in trying to desegregate ourselves we wind up doing just the opposite. The fact that there is a need for a channel for people of color in this day and age is just plain sad. I really believe its counter productive because it once again segregates us by race. We should instead make pests out of ourselves to make sure people of all walks of life get equal media attention, especially where the missing are concerned. I think Discovery ID is a prime example of a great start.

A bunch of the missing have probably been abducted in sold to the slave trade. You know this country is famous for enslaving people. When the earthquake hit Haiti they even ran over there and tried to steal the children.Claiming they were "a christian"group.Yep that's probably where they are. Especially the children, white men love them. Thomas Jefferson raped Sally Hemmings for years. She was 13 and he was 30 years older than her. Your history book didn't tell you that did it.Your deceived if you think your skin color,or your social status, makes you better. Everything America has, they got it on the backs of slaves. What a disgrace.

Black or not, the cases being aired involve people whose disappearances did not attract enough attention for justice to be served. I applaud the effort of this show in bringing closure to families who are hurting. Also, to those saying people need to "pick themselves up by their bootstraps," I used to feel that way too. However, I've learned that some people are at such a disadvantage socioeconomic-wise and have no opportunities in this world to succeed. It isn't that they are lazy, stupid, etc. Go into a poor neighborhood some time and ask those kids how many of them have been to a zoo. How many of them have had a chance to see exotic animals, a beach, try ice skating, or go to a library. Those are opportunities many of us take for granted. My kids have had a chance to see animals from all over the world, ask questions about different terrain, see a body of water, and all the while they are learning about what they see. My kids have an advantage in this world because my parents gave me an advantage in this world.

Answer me this... Why is it that Black people can have a black college, black clubs and now apparently black only tv shows... (This is disgusting btw, who cares what color skin you are if you are missing you are in need of help!)... if I, yes as a white person, started a show that only searched for white people... I would have 5000 black people on my lawn tomorrow holding signs... Get off your high horse, there is NO white man keeping you down.. There are MANY black people that are better off than me. This is just an excuse for the lazy living off welfare. You people and yes I do mean YOU people need to get a clue. The future is ahead, stop looking back.

I tried to post this earlier, but racism will end when white people get over the mentality that blacks somehow owe them an explanation for the projects that they develop. This show is doing a good work and all some of you can do is be indignant that it's about people of color.

I could agree with you about this show being a good project if it were geared at helping ALL people instead of just helping to find missing minorities. The show IS about people of color, ME. There’s every reason and every right to be feeling offended and insulted by this show. It is outright and blatantly racist. I mean, come on, the show describes itself as dedicating to finding ONLY missing minorities. WTH is up with that nonsense?!? How can it NOT be considered racist?? If white people developed a show like this, just exactly like this show, and geared it towards finding strictly white women and children, well, my GOD!! Ole’ Revie Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Benjamin T. Jealous, Roslyn Brock, and well oh shoot, the entire board of directors of the NAACP would immediately be yelling & screaming about it. The next thing we know they would be requesting a special meeting to be held with the creators and producers of the show, pronto!! Sorry but, racism will end once black people realize that no one is out to get them, no one is holding them back, also if they got out of the past and joined the rest of the human race in the present day they could see no one cares about what they’re doing.

I'm starting to think that people who think like you are too indoctrinated to see the other side of the issue. And I also think that this is something that you need to get over- Black people are not looking for white people's approval anymore...those days are over and done with. That's the real issue that you and others have with the show. It's like 'how dare these black people do something that we disapprove of'? Well, we don't answer to you, so get over that.

So sad to see such a good cause overshadowed by the ugliness of racism. Even more disturbing to see how white America takes everything African Americans do to try and help ourselves as offensive. Some white Americas will never get it because they don't know how it feels to look out into the world an NOT see images of themselves portrayed in a positive light, and only their dirty laundry aired. They don't know how it feels to have to face stereotypes on a daily basis and try not to live up to them. Not all of them but some just don't have a clue, and frankly don't care to. Why should they? they don't have to, right. I mean there not the one's being ostracized. Maybe once they stop feeling attacked by our efforts to help ourselves they will open their eyes. But then again maybe not. Either way it doesn't matter, we will keep moving forward. As for including more races into the programming I agree. I hope to see more minorities although they do nothing to rally or unite with us for equal inclusion of all ethnicity's. We have always fought and died for everyone to have the same rights. Excuse us if we want to do something just for ourselves as all other minorities now do. Lastly, don't take it so personally white America. We want to get over the past just as much as you, however we find ourselves still having to make way and take what is given to you freely, so it comes across that way. We understand that the sins of the past are your ancestors, but we are still living with the racism as is evident from above posts, and therefore it's effects and so the need for this show. As long as we must be reminded so will you. We are not enemies of each other, the enemy is the mentality of racism. That is something we all want to die.

What’s so sad is how sorry you feel for yourself, Lady J. What’s so sad is how bitter and angry you appear to be because of the color of skin you were born into and how you perceive the world today. White people don’t know how it feels to have to face stereotypes on a daily basis and how to try not to live up to them?? Umm, excuse me Lady J, but what exactly is your post saying?? Your post is filled with nothing BUT stereotypes. So boo-hoo, cry me a river, and get over all this “poor pitiful black me” garbage already. This is 2012, not the 1800’s, or the 1960’s, no this is 2012 and I would say black America is doing just fine thank you very much. They just haven’t stopped feeling sorry for themselves or stopped screaming “poor me, what about my rights” yet to realize that all is fine now. It’s especially people like you who cannot get over it, who are living in the past, and pitying themselves. Black people keep screaming for their own holidays, own tv channels, their own “whatever”, all the while white people are forbidden to say ANYTHING about it. GOD forbid if we do, or GOD forbid if we say why is there special treatment because IF we do, we are called racist. BUT if black people talk about it, they are NOT racist. Hypocrisy at its finest. AND excuse me, but NO you DON’T want to get over the past, you LIVE in the past. It apparent with disgusting examples as this TV show geared ONLY towards helping minorities. Hypocrisy and racism at its finest. If you want to separate America Lady J by saying “white America” and “black America” well then, how about “black America” STOP taking everything, every dang thing, so personally and just get the heck OVER IT already. Thank you for that Lady J. When all you see being reported on the news are blond or brunette young women or girls, it does beg the question "what about everybody else who is missing?" For the other folks who post on this site carrying on about this being a "racist" venture...you are right, the world is not seen through our eyes...they only see themselves, in commercials, in sitcoms, in movies, etc., and if you do see another group of people (Asian, Hispanic, African, Arabs, Indians) being highlighted or broadcast, you tend to cheer and say "finally!" Many people are missing daily...Mexicans who venture over the border, Chinese immigrants who are loaded into shipping containers, Africans who are crammed into one bedroom apartments, and when one of these go missing, no one raises the alarm. It is so with African Americans. Only in recent memory with the disappearance of Phylicia Barnes was a young black women featured nightly on the news and I suspect because her case was pushed mightily for it to be so, otherwise missing people of ethnicities other than Caucasian are almost never highlighted. Folks on this site seem to be offended that the show is on a "black" network featuring stories about missing black people in thier communities-well if not them, then who? Would you really care? And as another person pointed out...there may be one black toddler reported missing (if ever) for every 5 white child reported missing and thier story gets told ad infinitum while the black toddler's story falls off the radar. We need to get real people. The network TVOne is doing a service for those families that are looking for thier loved ones. All this viral racial and insensitive hate-mongering does not resolve anything except make the person spewing the vitriol feel better that thier comments are being read and followed by others like themselves. Missing is missing no matter what color they are and if the national media paid attention to this and broadcast ALL missing children and/or people alike, TVOne and other outlets would not have to create a series to highlight the plight of missing in our communities because they would be doing it already.

Its quite simple why the police and media do not cover minorities: they are too stupid to realize that "snitching" is what law abiding people do. There are many missing people's cases that do not get enough coverage, like Hasani Campbell, Adji Desir, Jhessye Shockley, etc. The insanely overt racism in these posts, decrying such a program as evidence that minorities want special treatment, or that such a program should not be allowed because it caters to one group, shows exactly why such a program is necessary. Some of the posts that I have read here are very sad. I think that this new program is a wonderful way to bring attention to the missing. Many of the posts here are very racist. I bet none of you had even heard about these two missing people have you? Neither had I. You should ask yourself why? The reason why is because news agencies dont care to report stories about missing African American people, and not because Pamela Butler or Hasanni Campbell family members love them any less than a white family loves there families.
When no one is listening to you how do you have a voice? Popular news stations like CNN and FOX are not the voices for African Americans, that is unless they can report something terrible that a black person has done.
I just want to say that it really is a hurtful feeling to not know where your child is, if they are being hurt, if they are being feed, if they are warm, if they are being treated right, if they are dead or if they are alive, and it doesnt matter what race, religion or economic status the missing person comes from it hurts each and every family the same.

While I feel for the missing families, the stark reality is that that that black community is looking for preferential treatment. Not just for the missing but on a large number of fronts. Ever hear of a earned right? Why do we have Ghettos? What is the major race in Ghettos? As sad as it is... I rest my case

You are exactly the reason that this show has to be. There are too many people in this country who are sick and demented just like you. You obviously have low self esteem and the only way to make up for your pathetic existence is to look for someone who you can berate. NEWS FLASH...neither black people or anyone else cares about you or the sickness that you spew. You may now crawl back under your rock and get back in bed with your sister.

You dont think white people are on welfare? Well they are, and there are more white people in America on welfare and food stamps than therer are black people, LOOK IT UP, IT"S TRUE!
Yes there are more black people living in ghettos, and most of them are honest, hard working people who work really hard to move their families from there!
There are more white people living in trailer parks, and most of them are probably hard working honest people who want to move their families from there too!

In a reply to one of your commenters, you claim you want an even playing field. There is no network nor television show that is strictly for "whites only". Are missing minorities underreported? Yes. I'll agree with you. However, creating a show that is ONLY for one race or another doesn't even anything out. It just creates the opposite problem. As I said in another comment, create a show that covers all the races fairly, and you'll get everyone watching. We should be opening EVERYONE'S eyes.... not just one racial group at a time. If you want to be treated equally, treat others equally as well. Serve as the example for others to follow. Someone has to step up and be that voice of reason. If you feel there is unfairness, then create something that IS fair. Don't create something that is equally unfair but on the opposite side of the scale. That doesn't balance things. It just creates more opposition. The black community says, "White TV doesn't fairly cover black issues." The white community says, "Blacks want their own programming, so they must want special treatment." It's not solving any problems... it's creating more.

Thank you Misti. Very sensible and clear-headed response to those who would make this a "race" issue. It is not. Loved ones are missing and there is no venue available in certain communities to get the word out that they are. No widespread press, only locally distributed "have you seen this person?" posters which are very limited in scope and reach. Were that the media could have a small piece each night that highlights the missing and make it a part of each broadcast (CNN, FOX, NBC, CBS, ABC, etc.) and not only make it news when a Caucasian person (woman, child or man) is missing..that's where the disparity enters in and for all those who are decrying the status of a "black only" network having a series about missing folks, if the above were true then it would not be necessary. Who said you could not watch a network that highlights concerns of the black community? Your choice...I watch CMT and any other network that tickles my fancy, I don't limit myself to a network just because it (seemingly) caters to one group. I learn stuff about others in this country by watching and often it is very inspiring, interesting, humorous and enlightening...try it sometimes. For those who also think that networks like BET and TVOne is only for black folks, try again...your kids are probably watching it in any case and are a lot more informed than a lot of you seem to be. Once again, a loved one is MISSING and anyway there is to get the word out to find them will work..if the national media won't do it, another way has been found. Simply put.

For how many more years must we as white Americans be required to pay the debt created by our slave-owning ancestors? Slavery has ended, yet we are forced to continue to walk on eggshells with our words and our actions so as not to "offend" African Americans. It has been claimed all over this page that African American's receive less media attention when they go missing and I think that's utterly ridiculous. It's not about skin color, it's about socioeconomic status. A child from a middle class family with supportive and present parents is going to get more media coverage than one living in poverty with non-present parents. I understand that TV One is a network directed towards black American's, but I think therein lies the initial problem. If there was a channel specifically oriented for white American's, it would raise hell in the black community. Whereas, we are supposed to sit back, have this thrown in our face, and accept it without argument. If only things really were equal...

Is it abour race? If 10% of the population is left-handed, and a store stocks 90% of its golf clubs for right-handers, but only 10% left-handed clubs, it is about hands? If 80% of the population identifies with a missing child because they remind her of little Mary Jo, but only 20% identify with little Kaesha, that's a simple part of humanity.

And, a network wants viewers. Do they produce programs to get max viewers, so the sponsors will pay a better price per minute, or go for a lower volume of viewers? Their employees want to be paid, and they don't want a smaller paycheck because their sales are to a smaller number of customers, or to be laid off because of a drop in sales.

Viewers decide what they WANT to watch, not what some social organization tells them they SHOULD watch. We wouldn't be watching car repossession shows if we let someone tell us how we are supposed to spend our time.

This whole "my race" and "your race" thing gets tossed into a very simple equation where it usually doesn't belong. I want to pay my bills and feed my kids. If left-handed Liithuanians like it, or not, I'm going to build and sell to the largest number of people I can find. If 2% of the population of the US is left-handed Lithuanians, I'm not going to produce 50% of my stock for them and watch it rot while my kids go hungry.

We all need to stop "race-whining" about what we want, and deal the best we can with our own individual lives.

Another double standard and a situation of "wanting your cake and eating it too." If white people had a program on any channel called "Find Our Missing" and ony featured white people, an uprising would occur and lawsuits would be launched. The only reason we see more missing white people featured is that the families of those people keep pushing it in the media. There was nothing special about Natalee Holloway but even to this day, her mother has not kept quiet. There have been many missing African American children receive media coverage. What I can't stand about black people is they are always looking for an excuse for their failures, poverty, absent fathers etc, no media coverage for their people. It's easy to blame white people but GET OVER IT and get off your duffs, pull your pants up, learn to speak properly, clean up your filthy language (using the n word) and make something of yourselves.

Name a regular black character on Freinds, Seinfield or how about Cheers. There is nothing wrong with an entertainment channel or show that represents people of color. Every time I see something on the news regarding a missing person, they are almost always white. There are PLENTY on lazy, foul mouthed white people too. By the way I am white.

They are all tragic situations, but do remember that behind every one of these people, there are wonderful dedicated detectives who keep their cases open year after year, hoping to get that one break they can take to their families. What parent wouldn't be hurt when their children disappear. And by the way, no, white media doesn't just report only on two-parent black families with missing kids. If two parents were the criteria, a lot of white cases would never be reported. Ever notice how many whites go missing and the mother has no clue who the father is? Just saying.

I'm not against the show...whatever helps bring missing people back home or brings comfort to the families.
But let's be real.....maybe it's not all the media's fault that there is less coverage for missing blacks. Maybe it's much more socio-economic than race. Maybe it's when the police officer asks the mom "when did you last see your son"..and the mom replies "He always stays out late but show's up in the morning for breakfast"....and he's 12 or 13. It's just not going to get the same attention as parents who know where their kids are 24*7 and the kids veer from that schedule.

I am white. It is true that for many years, centuries even, nobody but the black family and community cared if somebody went missing. Not the police, not the media, not the other citizens. It is also true that it does not matter what kind of background, parent or problem the missing person had in their life. Something caused them to disappear and we need to react to that. So, I agree with what the article says and I agree with you. However, it is not helping your position when you answer a racist with more name calling. Please learn to rise above him/her and take the high road when answering the ignorant people online. It will give much more credence to your points.

That's one reason I don't watch her show anymore, that's trash. All she covered was Casey and Kaylee. Waste.Pathetic, uncaring. That yound lady from Carolina missing in Maryland. Who in Maryland, besides her two sister could have ever known she was missing. Stop making excuses. Black folk aren't the only ones who make excuses for unrighteous behavior.

I don't think so Dave. You made a poor example of a mother who replies to an officer's query about her son who does not come home (supposedly) at a decent hour and it (supposedly) is customary for him to stay out late or at odd hours. But what about the businesswoman coming home from work who is jacked in her car? or the high school student coming home after attending extra-curricular activities after school? or the child plucked from her backyard playing alone? What about them? And it is not about any socio-economic issues...it really is about the low regard the larger society has about African-Americans and other ethnicities in general. Historically, law enforcement shrugs off reports about missing black individuals, but ramp up their efforts if the individual were Caucasian. Sure the case remains open, but too often it goes into a "cold case" file and does not get much attention. The comments above really should focus on finding our loved ones and anyone who is missing a child, father, mother, aunt, sister, brother, uncle, etc., knows the pain of being in limbo and not having any closure simply because they do not know where their loved one is and the national media and cable news networks does not lend itself to finding them because it is deemed "unimportant" unless and I will state it again...unless it is a Caucasian person and that person does not have to have money or be prominent, simply be "white". So your assertion that it is a socio-economic issue is way off. Kaylee Anthony and Natalee Holloway are two names we are going to be hearing about seemingly forever..not so with others in the black community who remain missing and unaccounted for....in part due to the perception that you and others hold about their status in society and the misconception that they really do not count and thus do not deserve airtime. Note: I will agree with others on this post and say that until Asians, Hispanics, Arabs, Indians and people of other ethnic persuasions are made as important to find as Caucasians, then this debate will rage on forever. Our society at large is quite responsible for this and until the "race" issue is resolved....regrettably we will be at each other's throats over this.

It's amazing how many people live in the dark. Someone made a comment that Black people accept the disappearing and murdering of their loved ones as normal behavior,,and that they do not want to find their loved ones because of this acceptance. Are you really that ignorant? So I guess when a White person spazzes out and goes on a killing spree or becomes a serial killer White people are supposed to accept that as normal behavior??..Hey...the profile for a serial killer is usually a White man. That doesnt make any sense. The point is that Black people DO report their loved ones missing but they get very little media attention. Yeah..your local station may broadcast it on the news..but you're probably not going to catch it on CNN every week. Everyone deserves to find their loved ones no matter their color. This show just happens to be hosted by an African-American woman on an African-American station. That's hurtful to families who may not get the media attention you talk about...and yes...there are white families with missing people who don't get coverage. At least the more well known programs don't brazenly say they're only covering certain races. Even if 60% are white. (Guessing..not actual data)

Here's an idea. Let's make things equitable. The media should report on missing people based on the percentage of the population that their race encompasses. Would that make anyone happy? These arguments are ridiculous! Instead of focusing on who gets more media attention, we should be focusing on the real problem – the criminals (murderers, rapists, kidnappers, etc.) who are causing the issue. We need to work together to strengthen our laws and punishments. Until we get a handle on the crime in this nation, these sad stories of missing people will never end. Until then there will always be someone who doesn't agree that a person gets enough media play. It doesn't matter if a network shows only whites or only blacks. The fact is the family of the white or the black missing person who isn't featured is going to be upset because they weren't. There will never be a resolution to this until the crimes are eradicated. People should applaud the successes of others rather than try to tear down the positive things they do. And we as a nation should work together toward the common interests we have and show a stand of unity rather than plaster our ignorance all over the Internet.

And since I also have 3 children and a full time job, its not exactly like I have spare time, ya know? But I find the time.... do you? Do you know how many unidentified remains exist in the state you live in? How many are black? How many are white? How many missing persons are their for the state you live in? How many are white? How many are black? I live in Maryland. There are currently 251 unidentified remains on file with Namus, and 134 of them are of black persons. You don't see what you said as a statement that white people don't care that black people go missing in this country? Lets see what you wrote..
This show will be on TVOne...Do white people watch this channel? You said.

I say... so black people have a tv channel I can't watch because I have CNN?

Hmm.... White folks have their own missing persons shows it's called the nightly news on HLN, CNN, Nancy Grace, ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC. You said.

I say... I agree that *most* news programs do not cover many missing persons of color HOWEVER living in the greater Baltimore Metropolitan area.... I disagree as far as my local coverage goes.

Black folk are not segregating themselves; we've been segregated by folks in mainstream media. If y'all want to call it racist go ahead (I'd look the word up first seeing as how most of you are using the word in the wrong context), You said.

I say.. Not sure what you are talking about as far as mainstream media... frankly there are too many persons of color to count on almost every major TV show, There are countless major musicians of color, countless movie starts. There are black musicians I prefer over white, and there are black actors and actresses that I would choose to watch as well.

but it's about time somebody paid attention to missing people of colour. You said.

And that was where the offending started... your statement indicates that until Black and Missing started, and this new television show started that NO ONE paid attention to missing people of color and I tell you that is crap. Doenetwork has been around for a decade, I've been a member for over 5 years, and all 3 of my pet cases are black men (the absolutely most under-reported set of all) I mean come on... there is a case in NJ where a 300 pound man wearing Sean John from head to toe, and a very expensive watch was found floating in a major body of water and remains unidentified to this day. How can this man have gone missing and NO ONE REPORTED HIM MISSING??????? There is a black man found in Baltimore's Inner Harbor with not one, but the names of multiple women tattooed on his body and he remains unidentified because NO ONE REPORTED HIM MISSING. What is wrong with this picture? Do people value other people so little that when they disappear they are just assumed to have moved on without telling someone? And trust me, there are thousands of people of all races and ethnicities that are found deceased that clearly could be identified if someone would just report that person missing and give a picture or some details.

We have families, and loved ones too. Just.like.white.folks. You said.

I say, So by saying "we have families and loved ones too, Just.like.white.folks" You don't think you didn't say that you were black by saying that? You claimed you were black by saying "WE HAVE" against the context of the rest of your post and this article.

White people are so dumb and alot of you are showing why with ya'll comments. It not that black people want to be seperated or not focusing on children all together, it is about the equal opportunity. Yeah, there a lot of missing children but the only missing children that actually get shown on TV are WHITE!!!!!!!! TV One actually give black families hope to finding their children like white people do on CNN and all those other news networks. There are actually more black children missing then most think. 1 out of 1000 black kids get shown on TV a year but let one WHITE baby go missing and there will be breaking news on every channel. If you white people stop acting like everyone get a fair share and that racism isn't real you might see that. Too bad that it has to take a black channel to find humans in America.

"White people are so dumb....." Ok, let's work with that, shall we?

      alot = a lot
ya'll = combination of you and all should be y'all. But in the context of the sentence the word used should be "your".
      seperated = separated
      then = than

Get an education before you start calling other races names. Or at least a spellchecker.

As for the show, I am all for exposing missing minorities more because, yes, I agree that they are underreported. But it's a shame that other races are being EXCLUDED. Taking the extreme opposite approach doesn't solve the issue. Make it show that addresses missing people on a national level regardless of race and then you'll get me watching.

True, all people deserve to be found, but people of color have a harder time getting media attention. I personally have a blog page that covers the cases of missing people. The link is posted below. Please take time to read the stories as we try to get to the bottom of these cases and find the truth. Every child and adult of every race deserves to be found. There are pleny of cases of missing caucasians in economically challenged communities that seem to get far less attention than those involving people in affluent neighborhoods. Sometimes they get no more than a brief message on the local news and then we never hear another word aboout them. Would it be socially acceptable to create a program specifically for those missing caucasian individuals or to set up an organization such as "White and Missing Foundation, Inc." or would that be considered racist?

The point here is that whites get a disproportionate amount of attention in the media when they go missing. Blacks on the other hand, statistically speaking, tend to get little or no coverage. This show is to help restore some balance in that attention. Whites don't need their own show, they already have several and garner far more coverage when abducted. Now try this: Name three white girls you remember going missing; now try to name three black girls you remember going missing...

I challenge all people of color to make this a hit show. I challenge you. I have a theory about why whites and blacks dont seem to get equal media attention. It's pretty simple really. Blacks EXPECT and ACCEPT this type of murder and disappearing as kind of normal. Yes, normal. Many wont speak up for their missing family memebers because they fear being investigated for some illegal activity. Yes, I said it. I mean no disrespect, and someone please please please prove me wrong: it appears the majority of blacks dont care about other blacks. sad , but true.

@not the same – whites don't need a show, they have the cops already looking for "white" missing people. More cops investigate a missing person in Beverly Hills or Bel-Air than Compton or Watts. Plus is someone goes missing in "white neighborhoods" the media is more likely to follow the event and it'll get airtime than other "colored" neighborhoods.Just saying.....

I don't think it is so much about NEEDING a "White" missing persons show. I believe the comment was intended to point out how, if caucasians were to make a television show solely intended to find missing caucasians, it would be met with intense criticism and deemed racist.

I understand that's what he meant but this show is focusing on the forgotten people of color that don't get the police attention that many "white" neighborhoods do.

For example, if someone goes missing in East LA, why would the cops care? It's a neighborhood that is very economically challenged that does have some people breaking the law (i.e. gangs, drugs dealers etc) just like any other economically challenged neighborhood. However, if a "white" person in Calabasas or Orange County the response would be more in depth from the police. They actually will investigate it rather than just taking a report and sweeping it under the rug.

If media attention were given to non-whites, there would be no need for this type of show. The purpose of the show is simply to say, we have some missing folk too that you never hear about even when they come out of "affluent" homes as it has been phrased. Thus, it's not really about racism, it's about equal media coverage.

Hello, Tradok. I am white and I understand the premise, however, it's like someone else said – Black people should actually act like they care. They need to make their voices heard! I am white and I think all missing persons should be sought. Not just white, or just black, or just Hispanic, etc. We are all human beings and should all look out for each other. I am saddened by any story of a person missing, regardless of their race. It's hard to even fathom what those families are going through. Just the thought of not being able to know where my son is makes me want to cry.

I am always surprised when a story I think is generally a good news item generates such vitriol. I think any outlet that highlights those people who are missing from their loved ones is worthwhile. I watch Beth Holloway's show when I can, and I will watch this show as well. The loss these families must feel is unfathomable to me. Regardless of race all these families deserve to have answers to the questions surrounding the dissapearance of their loved ones. The fact of the matter is that the dissapearance of Baby Lisa and Ayla were big stories on the national news, but baby Bianca, not as much. The pain these families feel is no different, even if their skin color is, and Baby Bianca's family deserves ongoing national coverage just as the other familes do. Those of you who espouse your racist rantings should be ashamed of yourselves. I am quite sure you save your backward thinking for your internet posts and wouldn't dare say these things in actual mixed company. SHAME!

It's sad that people can't focus on the point of the story. While reading it I already knew ignorant comments would follow. Just because we have 'free speech' doesn't mean everything needs to be said. It's so easy to hide behind a screen name. The story presented the facts that white people are represented more then people of color when someone goes missing. Regardardless of race, it is IMPORTANT that they ALL be found and brought home. The point of this show is to bring awareness to the counteless faces that aren't being showed in the media. We're not trying to segregate ourselves, we're trying to have our voices heard. It's not a personal attack on white people or anyone else. I'm sure plenty will comment unnecessarily but seriously take the time to think about it. I'm a young, black, educated woman trying to make it in a world where peopel don't take the time to listen and understand peoples differences. I for one am happy that this show is on the air.

We really need to get children educated about the human race. A wonderful site 'nationalgenographic.com' details the movement of early humans out of Africa. We are all essentially Africians. TV shows and articles which try to divide humanity into classes based on pigmentation are counter productive. Modern countries need to go through this education in order to become enlightened. I'm looking forward to the day that pigmentation will not be a factor in grouping people. Human beings are more complex and deserve a chance to aspire to a better life.

It is about money. There a lot of white people out there that are missing that do not make the news. This show is racist, as it is not about the people whose families can not afford to spend money to make their disappearance known. If people of color are so upset and claim that white people and the news is racist then they shouldn't be producing a show that is based solely on race. The people of color are segregating themselves by creating shows such as this one. They are keeping themselves separate from white people instead of trying to be their equal. They are creating racism by not including everyone.

We need assistance just lilke whites to find our missing. However, the media does almost nothing to assist in the search for missing black children and does nothing when it comes to adults. This is not racism on our part. Hopefully once the major stations pick up on our need maybe they will treat our missing the same as they do for whites.

Also, I do believe this program will only in the future be a show for just blacks but other minority races that are also under-represened in the media.

You have racism and reverse racism that still creates many tensions in this country. I would like to add that the show is a great idea and I do not see how bringing awareness of the missing people that did not receive attention can be considered racist especially when it is fact that many do not know they are missing because of the lack of equality!!!!

Let me explain what may not be obvious to you critics. Black people who go missing are factually and collectively underrepresented in the media. All you have to do is some basic research, but no, the missing people who're highlighted on this show aren't worth the time or effort. I can't tell you how many times I've seen front page news and relentless coverage about white people who've gone missing, but when it comes to missing blacks, the majority of these missing do not get nearly the same coverage in most cases. Shows like this are created because they are necessary, plain and simple. If mainstream media doesn't highlight all of the missing with equal compassion and focus, then other means become critical. Life is precious regardless of ethnicity. I declare, such ignorant and callous comments and thought processes make me realize that this country has so far to go in eradicating racism.

This is so true, members of the media have acknowledged it several times in the past, but say there is nothing they can do about it, they run stories they think their viewers want to see. So unfortunately, our race has once again been put into the position that we have to look out for ourselves, that the coverage or assistance offered to the families of white missing persons is simply not provided to us. I ask you, is a missing 2 year old black toddler less of a tragedy than a missing 2 year old white toddler? Is a missing 12 year old black girl less of a tragedy than a missing 12 year old white girl? We have all seen it, if you are a blond, blue eyed honor student who comes up missing, your face is plastered all over every news broadcast, newspaper, bulletin, etc. However, a missing Black honor student, with college acceptance letters and scholarship offers receives a passing mention on the news for 1 day, maybe two and that's it. Shame.

Look around, just because they don't call Ivy League colleges "Historically White" doesnt mean that isn't what they are. Historically Black Colleges and Universities don't exclude anyone from applying and attending their schools. The only thing being designated an HBCU says is that at a time when no one else would except blacks, blacks made their own way through these schools. TV One, BET, and Centric are stations that are dedicated to African Americans, but they shouldn't be needed. If the other 500 stations on TV had more black representation they wouldn't be needed. Take an honest look though, and you tell me if that is what truly happens. Even the hispanics have more stations than blacks do! So if blacks can't get anyone else to recogniize them, they create their own recognition. Sadly if little Amber goes missing at the same time that little Kuaneshia goes missing they wont both get equal time. If 23 year old Holly goes missing she'll get more airtime than 23 year old Shardenay.

I used those names to prove a point. Regardless of what a persons name is their life is still important. Once again you've proven the point I was trying to make. If it's not exactly what you're used to it's wrong. I've said it before I know people with "normal" names and I know people with what people might consider "ghetto" names. The names mean nothing when it comes to where they are going in life. The ones with "ghetto" names are married school teachers. One of their husbands is a college recruiter, and the other is a school teacher as well. They both own homes and live pretty well. The ones with "normal" names have multiple children most dont have jobs and live in the projects or are on section 8 and aren't trying to do anything else. Having a "normal" name means nothing if you aren't going to do anything. Just like having a "ghetto" name means nothing if you have enough ambition to get up and make something of yourself.

I totally agree with u.... black people are in the news all the time b/c they are killing each other over drugs and money... but they can't get a real job so they have to rob the white men and women in order for them to survive.. so for all of u out there saying that black people are not getting enough attention are wrong..

That's also the point LISA (glad to see you're not scared to show that racism)! There are plenty of other races committing equal amount of crimes as blacks but you won't see them on the news all day every day, that will screw up the propaganda that is being pushed in AMERICA!!!!

So I guess all the other shows need to quit showing the missing black Americans they air since this show is doing that. It seems to me we just went back 50 years. Blacks take care of their own and the whites take care of their own. I thought we were past all this seperate stuff

I believe we have some black country singers these days. CMT is not designated just for whites. Not a great comparison on your part. I did not write my coment above to be racist. I was writing saying that shows should not be seperate. Push for the other shows to air these missing people. What if I dont watch this show because its on a black channel and I see this person are know there where abouts but dont know they are missing.

You all have points of value in positive thinking. However the ones with negative agendas are to be looked on as someone who covers there eyes and refuse to see the big picture, WHERE are THE MISSING? But what really gripes my ASS is when I try to post a reply to one of you ignorant MOTHERS this site sends me to HELL only n knows WHERE.

I voted for President Obama and I will again in a few short months. I despised Bush but he got the same rippin everyday that President Obama is getting. We are so divided in this country that one polictical party will never say the other side is right on anything. Yes I believe we have come a long way and voting our first African American as our President 4 years ago shows it. If you do not think so then you or your children will never feel good about being Americans because you will always think someone is being racist towards you. Im a white man that has been committed the last 11 years to a black man. Our parents did well we were both raised to believe that everyone we meet is not racist. If we had been raised any otherway we might not would have ever met.

Wow, really? You think trying to find the missing is a waste of time and money? Do you even acknowledge that these are human beings, and that the value of a human life is priceless? It's not your time or money, but you couldn't wait to show your ignorance and callousness by your post. Well done.

If less detail is given about each person's life, it would be possible to make
the public aware of more than two missing persons each week. Thanks for bringing this
    tragic situation to viewers' attention.

Very happy to see that there's a show like this. It is a shame that missing blacks are underrepresented in the media. Further proof that the news isn't about news, just ratings.
