Opinion: Tim Wise: What is post-racial? Reflections on denial and reality

Editor’s note: Tim Wise is the author of six books on race, including his most recent: Dear White America: Letter to a New Minority.  He tweets at @timjacobwise.

By Tim Wise, Special to CNN

(CNN) - Being asked to describe what “post-racial” means is a bit like being asked to describe a leprechaun, cold fusion or unicorns: we know what is meant, but, if we are willing to be honest, we also know that none of the four describe something real, something tangible, something true.

To me, “post-racial” is little more than a nonsense term devised by people (mostly white, frankly), who would simply rather not deal with the ever-present reality of racism and ongoing racial discrimination.

It is a diversion, intended to paper over the divisions that have long roiled our nation, and continue to do so today.

Though some sincerely believe this describes America’s reality– especially since a man of color was elected president - the illogic of believing this signals the veritable death of racism should be apparent: after all, we certainly wouldn’t claim that sexism and patriarchy had been smashed in Pakistan, India, Great Britain, Israel or the Philippines just because they all have elected women as heads of state.

Perceptions of discrimination a black and white story

To believe that the United States is post-racial requires an almost incomprehensible inability or unwillingness to stare truth in the face.

How can we be post-racial, after all, when the typical white family has 20 times the net worth of the typical black family, and 18 times that of the typical Latino family?

How can we be post-racial when studies find that even white men with criminal records are more likely to be called back for job interviews than black men without them, even when all other credentials and personal characteristics are indistinguishable?

How can we be post-racial when evidence suggests that the lightest-skinned immigrants earn roughly 17% more than the darkest-skinned immigrants, even when qualifications and levels of productivity are the same?

How can we be post-racial when Asian Americans, Latinos and blacks with college degrees are anywhere from one-third more likely to nearly twice as likely to be unemployed as their white counterparts? When schools serving mostly students of color are more than ten times as likely to be places of concentrated poverty, and far more likely to have the least experienced teachers?

How can we be post-racial when people of color continue to be so disproportionately targeted by our nation’s drug laws?

Although whites use drugs just as often as blacks (and more often than Latinos), it is people of color who comprise nearly 90% of persons incarcerated for a drug possession offense.  And it is people of color who are disproportionately stopped and searched for drugs and other illegal contraband, even though they are no more likely (and sometimes less likely) to be in possession of such items than whites are.

How can we be post-racial, when presidential candidates are either too afraid to raise these issues publicly, for fear of voter backlash (as with the Democratic incumbent), or willing to shamelessly exploit racial anxieties and resentments (as with at least one of the primary Republican challengers) by calling President Obama the “food stamp” president, or suggesting that poor black kids have “no habits of work” and should be made to clean their own schools as janitors?

This, despite the fact that most people in poor communities do work, and black teenage unemployment rates (now well over 40 percent) reflect only those black teens who are searching for jobs, and thus, by definition already have a solid work ethic, lacking only the opportunities to put that ethic into practice.

Sadly, the claims of America’s equanimity and post-raciality are not really new.

Even in the early 1960s, before the passage of civil rights legislation, at a time when we were still a formal apartheid state, polls found that a vast majority percent of whites already believed that blacks had just as good a chance to obtain a good job, housing or a good education as we or our children did.

In other words, white denial - one might say, delusion - on the matter of the nation’s racial reality has been longstanding.

It’s hard to say when or if we will actually arrive at that place called “post-racial”, or, better yet, post-racism.

But until whites begin naming streets in our neighborhoods after Martin Luther King, and naming the schools that our children attend after him (rather than fearing that such a designation might signify that our kids attend a “ghetto school”), I know for certain we are not “post-racial” yet.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Tim Wise.

Asian Americans have a lower unemployment level than whites. they also have the highest income and education level of any race.

Because Asian Americans don't work for the White man they open their own business and hire each other. Even give each other loans to help open the business up. If you live in a country where you see the White race will do anything to keep you down the wise thing to do is not do business with them don't work in their companies.

Refugees from the Vietnam war (Vietnamese, Laotians, Cambodians) are among the lowest in socioeconomic status too.

Good job with the Asian American stats. You just proved that the immigrants who came here from Asia, immigrants who had to have MONEY AND/OR EDUCATION to come here in the first place, have it better than the majority of the population. Meanwhile, Asians who came here as a result of American foreign policy still wallow in poverty for the most part.

I truly believe that President Obama is more 'White' or Caucasian than Black. Other than his skin and African name, his upbringing is White, with a White mother and White grandparents who raised him. His Black father abandoned him when he was two years old. Most of his classmates in Hawaii and Indonesia are multicolored. I continue to be puzzled as to why a person is automatically labeled as Black when he should actually be Bi-racial or Multi-racial. More accurate education on the matter should be given in school at a young age and without the assertion on which is superior and desirable.

Why do "blacks" refer to themselves as "African-American" rather than "African/Irish/Welsh/Native-American"? So few "blacks" are of 100% African decent, yet that's the only race they use to identify themselves.

Actually, President Obama is as much black as he is white. We get 50% of our dna from mom and 50% from Dad, so what you just said makes no sense. Secondly, even if he was raised by the white side of his family being a man of color you can bet he has had a black experience in America. Thirdly, President Obama has chosen to identify himself as a black man and therefore that's what he is. End of story.

A lot of the problem is not race, but the problems that past racial discrimination and poverty cause even when a decent level of income exists. I grew up in the White armpit of my county. Most of my childhood friends came from families that did not appreciate college educations and, in fact, friends of my parents felt my sister and I went to college because we were too lazy to get full-time jobs – until years later when we began out-earning their kids. My sister and I were ONLY members of my father's large, extended family to graduate from college. Out of over 20 cousins who's kids have grown up, only two other cousins made sure their kids wend to college. On my mother's side of the family there are about 30 cousins whose kids have grown and in virtually every case on both sides of the family you could see whose kids would end up financially best. Their parents took them to museums when they were kids. They enrolled them in low-cost or free educational programs when they found them. Their kids often studied music for at least a few years. Their kids were raised to be responsible, to understand how money works, to buy a house as soon as they're able, etc.

Hmmm, in a short term view, when whites were terrorizing blacks with hoods for years, that was completely acceptable by the majority. No majority of blacks will you ever find advocating the beating of a person because he's white. cant say that from a white perspective can you? American historically speaking.

Jubie3, "that was completely acceptable by the majority." You said that when referring to the beatings of Blacks by Whites in American history. That is a generalization, and not accurate. It was not completely acceptable by most, that is why it changed. You may argue that it changed too slowly, or that it was not the priority that it should have been, but your statement that it was completely acceptable is wrong.. Ameican History....

just because someone has more white friends than black does that make him racist? some people would say yes
if a black person hire five black people and one white person no because if he hired 10 black people and 0 white people he would not be racist because its his business and he can hire who he wants to

Boo hoo hoo cry me a river mister 'enlightened white man' that wants to lecture the rest of us. Here's a start when racism may either decline or even end: Stop affirmative action, get rid of the naacp, tell jessie jackson and al sharpton to shut their holes or do something productive, get blacks to stop killing blacks and then point a finger at the white man, have some accountability for your own race and its faults and WORK for what you get! Oh, one more thing. You think naming a street in my neighborhood after MLK will be a start to reconciling with blacks. I'll one up you. Get blacks to get on board with my suggestions and i'll change my name to MLK! Not gonna happen. The role of victim is too easy to play. The role of hard work, doing for yourself, accountability and respect for self and others is too much work. They have sat back and watched the whites and asians do it long enough and want nothing to do with it.

Let's dispell something that media, whites, Newt and others would have you to believe, there are millions of hardworking Black, Hispanic, Asian and other minorities that work hard everyday to provide for their families. Go home to their wives and children and make every attempt to raise them in a way that is suitable and respectful of their beliefs. Yet you never see those people in the media, a speck here or there maybe but never as a culture or positive influence to say, "...we have integrated into white america.." Well thats what you are saying, we need to fit "White America's virtures and what they believe is a civilized way of living." Blah, blah, blah. That's what I think of your voiced opinion.

and those who do not finish college or not high school complain about people who go to school for 4 or more years and get a good job because they make more money as a doctor than they do at working at mcdonalds. and the next time you walk into mcdonalds tell me how many white people you see and the next time you go to the doctors tell me how many white people you see then we can continue the discussion.

Advanced classes are racist because there aren't enough minorities. No one asks why because everyone knows and attacks why so few of the "numbers" achieve and excel, nope, cancel the advanced science class and replace it with auto shop.

Not enough minority firefighters or policeman, knowing the law and being able to understand fire code and civility is racist. Dumb down or eliminate requirements. Welcome to idiocracy.

Tim Wise is painting this image with broad strokes and blurry lines. There's more to most of the these statistics than meets the eye (variables that are not accounted for in the studies), Newt Gingrich proposed that ALL students – not just poor black ones – help work to clean their schools, etc. It's regrettable because I somewhat agree with his viewpoint here, he just discredits himself too much with these sensational, sweeping, half-truths to be taken seriously. We aren't post-racial. But we're better than we ever have been, and we're still trying to improve. There is no fault in that.

    February 1, 2012 at 1:05 pm | Report abuse |
    • Really?

Newt was the one who said young black men should demand jobs not food stamps. Why did he single out that group? Why, when he was searching for words, did he single out that group? Either it is because he himself carries those beliefs and it was an honest reflection of his racist views OR he knows that plays to a stereotype that those who carry prejudiced beliefs about persons of color and he was pandering to it. The fact that large numbers of white people think that blacks use the most food stamps, when in fact it is the white population that does, shows the kind of imbedded racism that this author describes. Your attempt to minimize these studies or claim there are some "blurry lines" here or claim that Newt didn't really mean what he said simply proves the authors point. And those who are truly racist, don't believe they are – they think they're just "telling it like it is." They just have to ignore vast amounts of factual data to do so.

This is simple diarrhea coming from Tim Wise's mouth. I'm surprised CNN would agree to let an unintelligent argument, written in this baseless manner, be published on the CNN site. Simply crap and everyone, whether you disagree or not, know that some of his claims may be true about "numbers" but his interpretation of the numbers and what they signify, is absurd probably are far leap from reality! Racism hasn't gone anywhere. It has simply become more veiled. Of the numerous examples of this in the last few weeks, one stands alone. I managed to get my boss fired (and take his job in the process) for instructing me to find a reason to fire our sole black employee. Why? He was afraid the employee would try to steal from the company "because that's what [they] do" (according to him). Needless to say, he didn't exactly use the word "they".

I would like to add this– The federal government is the biggest offender. Example: Take two individuals, the first a white guy with exact qualifications to meet and exceed job requirements, and the second, a handicapped non-white (any race other than white) women with less than the requirements. Who will get the job? The woman. Unfortunately the feds would rather take the lesser qualified simply to meet quota. They should make the choice simply on qualifications and not on age or what the person looks like.

HATE, IGNORANCE and PREJUDICE are still a PROBLEM in AMERICA. Most people still DO NOT UNDERSTAND that the MEAURE of a PERSON is what is on the INSIDE (Heart, Mind and Soul) instead of what is on the OUTSIDE (Color, Money or Position).

From the depths of one's sould come forth either LOVE, TRUTH and WISDOM or HATE, LIES and IGNORANCE.

Your comment points out the heart of this discrepancy. Is racism a problem? Well, certainly it is for some, and in fact, as long as there are races, there will be problems from it. But is it a -major- problem? How does it compare to, say, the economy in terms of issues we need to be concerned about? Opinions abound about that. Some would say others don't take care about racism if they don't consider it a problem, but that other person might simply be saying, "It's not a problem compared to ..." Racism is simply too complex to state it to be "a problem" or "not a problem". It is both and always will be.

Thanks for trying to inject reason into the discussion of race matters in America. If we are actually being reasonable, you should definitely mention the root of the problem, namely the fact that IQ and cognitive functioning is 60-80% hereditary. The average black IQ is 85. The average white IQ is 100. The average pacific island Asian IQ is 110. What we equate to be 'social ills' are almost entirely low-IQ driven. Education and tax money cannot affect this.

There is a reason that Sweden, Iceland, Finland, Denmark, etc. do not have the social ills that we have. The average IQ of these countries is much, much higher than in the U.S. due to the fact that there are very few blacks and other low IQ races living there.

Pointing this out does not make me a racist by the way.

It's been shown quite conclusively that IQ can be affected 25% or so either way by environmental factors. Nutrition, education, and health care immediately come to mind. So, wow, that well-fed, well-educated, pampered white kid has a higher IQ. Whoopdy-freakin'-doo.

Your wonderfully Victorian views of racial basis for IQs is quite amusing, but rather sad.

From dictionary.com, for racism: "a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others." Note that your belief or lack thereof that blacks should be ruled over are not necessary (but if you believe so, feel free to add icing to the cake). So, unless you are black, your belief that your race is superior inherently defines you as racist. But, going further, you state that the IQ of blacks is below that of whites regardless of education or wealth, without supplying anything to substantiate the latter part of that claim. You have provided no foundation for your "logical" claim.

What about the other 20-40%? For so long this country has denied blacks the same rights to education as whites, thereby lowering their ability for cognitive function through generations. Now, when the damage has already been done, you simply want to say, hey we’re all equal, it’s not my fault you’re not as smart as me. While it may not be your fault directly, white ancestors have given whites a distinct advantage over the ancestors of blacks, so you have definitely benefitted from slavery and discrimination.

Believing that education and tax money cannot help to correct this issue is wrong, and not wanting to fix this because you claim the inherent differences among the races determine their intelligence IS racist…by the way.

Greg, I fear I may not have explained myself fully with the last statement I made. I want to make clear that one’s hereditary does not DETERMINE one’s intelligence; one’s hereditary merely PLAYS A FACTOR in their intelligence. What you say above is that intelligence is SIMPLY hereditary (since nothing can be done) which is racist.

Duane, while I can agree we have many issues within the community itself. I would think that holds true for every race. Education, respect, and common decency will go along way. But you're forceful and inaccurate statement here, is why I would not respect your opinion if we had met in person. Another person claiming all the ills of American being a "Black" problem. Last time I checked there are white surpemist groups, asian gangs, black gangs, white gangs. My point is there is a criminal eliment in all communites. A large part of it driven by lack of education, feeling alienated or neglected in their own communites. Their fragile egos need something to fuel it, make them feel important or stronger. Unfortunately that leads to crime, hate and so on.

All of those items mention are an issue in the Black community, however let me point out, I see just as many murders being committed by white men, killing their families, wives, co workers as any other race. Again, my opinions are mine. I firmly believe it's a lack of edcuation for all of us that allow this issue to drag on for the entirety of his Nations existance.

Stop lumping people of color in one category. Whites do their fair share of killing, the reason it does hit the news as often as it does for people of color is because the news media is owned and operated by whites.

For plenty of white America it is easy to delude yourself into thinking racism is a problem of the past. I certainly did not have to deal with it on a daily basis.

I'm married now to a wonderful woman. She's black. I see the sort of nonsense she has to put up with all of the time. I see the looks that her two (very fine and decent) young sons in their early 20s receive.

Racism is, happily, becoming less and less socially tolerated. But it's there and, for some, is an ever-present force in their lives every single day.

It is time for every person of every color to start just referring to ourselves as human beings – end of story! There is no other way – i look at a person and i see a person – i acknowledge the features but that is all – it is a feature – not a definition. We all must start to do this and respect or disrespect based on the actions of the person – it is so unbelievable simple and we all each are capable – we choose not to do this. SAD 😦

I'm not even sure where to begin to describe my disdain for this article. Once again, the author of an article of this type, seems to have put the blame for racism ALL on Caucasians despite the fact that there are many in the "minority" that are just as capable of acts of racism as any white person. What a bunch of horse hockey’s. What is the point of this article? Everyone knows that racism is alive and well. I’ve never heard the term “post-racial” in my life. Perhaps in the bloviating turtle-neck crowd that the author hangs around with this term has been used and while many of the facts he presented are true, one must ask themselves do white people bear responsibility for these sad facts? Is it my fault I'm white because that is what I'm taking from this, that it's my fault. What a bunch of crap. If anyone were to answer yes to this question then you can go to he_l, you are part of the problem, not part of the solution. There are no easy answers to stopping racism but the fact is ending racism is a responsibility every single person, regardless of race, must do their own part to stop the hate, not just WHITE PEOPLE!

Yes, there are people who are racist against whites, but that fact is not relevant to this article and is in fact a way of "derailing" the purpose and argument of this article. The fact remains that whites hold power and money over other races, even as we are becoming outnumbered. That is the difference. No, you do not need to feel ashamed to be white and that is not what this article is saying. But you do need to be aware of how, even in this age, being white in this country has afforded you a better life, something of which you and almost everyone else here seem to be in denial about. It doesn't do any good to ignore the problem and pretend that we are all the same, because racist people will still practice racist policies in hiring, firing, education, housing, etc. It may do a white person good to ignore these issues and pretend we are all the same, but it is not the reality for many others.

I think its time to not put so much emphasis on race, because sometimes noticing it is what makes it a problem.
As in if we integrate so well that kids dont even make the distinction.
I grew up back when most adults were still pretty openly racist, and even though I knew it was wrong they certainly didnt agree.
Now we have the power to force those people to shut up,except everytime we have discussions on race relations these people open their stupid mouths.

This article is a bunch of Crock! I am a small business owner that renovates homes to make them rentable. She writes about "black" inner-city work ethic. From experience, I can tell you they have none. Yeah, they come to work, but that is about it. You have to push them, be on top of them, nag them to keep a fair pace. They are always looking for breaks, working and talking on the cell phone, etc. Its also cultural. Many blacks gravitate to leisure than responsibility. Materialistically purchase goods instead of saving or investing. Manners are different. They say "excuse me" as they push by. Are they saying "excuse me?" or "excuse me!" ? I will not hire a black again. I do hire "latinos" because they "want to work" and "like to work." It is about work ethic and taking pride in ones work. Until they change their morals, mannerism, ethics, desires and ambitions they will always remain a bottom rung of society that expects certain mannerisms, morals, high level of work ethics, ambitious and aims for perfection. You can't expect businesses to hire or promote indivduals who are unproductive. Poor schools recruit from the bottom of the barrel. Its not rascism. Parents who don't give a sh** of education, will produce poor students with not parental support, thus poor schools. People with poor work ethic will be poor, live in poor neighborhoods, do poorly in school, etc. Maybe the reason more Blacks are jailed for drugs than whites is maybe because more blacks as a percentage of their group is using or dealing than whites. Its not rascism, its culture.

Re-read the article again dummy. The incidence of drug use is the same or comparable among races. The arrest and incarceration rate is disproportionately minorities. The extrapolations you've made in the rest of your post about an entire group of americans (around 42 million in fact), are exactly what the article is getting at.

Your stated decision to "never hire a black again" pretty much sums it up.

The only thing the author is saying here is that he cannot see beyond the color of a persons skin. He feels guilty for being white. Get over it dude and start living life instead of cooping up your head with this weird Berkeley like embarrassment that you are not a person of color and therefore must blame yourself and all other whites for being the oppressors. If he is any sort of example he is one to avoid. Frankly America is a meritocracy which (as flawed as it is) offers the greatest possibility of any person crossing over class lines to achieve security and happiness. So knock off the guilt and start living as a human being......pal.

The author's attempt to link wealth and education to race shows a fundamental issue with the discussion in this country. Race may place a small part, but the larger part deals with the "Culture of Poverty". Read this book and you will understand that things such as wealth, education, criminal records, are a result of norms in the "culture of poverty" and not a result of race. For example, in poverty, money is something used to purchase and show off (i.e. new Jordans, cars, clothing, etc). In the weath culture it is about building assets. Hence, once you remove race, those who are poor do not save since the cultural norm is to use the money to purchase big ticket items to "show off your wealth" rather than increase your bank account.

Until we address this "culture", which impacts all races, nothing will change.

You are correct! Ruby Payne, a researcher of education in the South, discovered the same thing. The culture of poverty transcends all races and backgrounds. It needs to be addressed.

What you write is very true and perhaps it may be the greater issue that will also need to be addressed but it does not answer the question of racism which cannot be ignored. Why is it that a much larger percentage of Blacks and Latinos live in poverty? Obviously Whites live in poverty as well but they’re considered collateral damage by those that have made it.

For those who think race is a non-issue, and poverty is an actual issue, then just stop replying to or reading these articles. The more of you who read and reply to this, the more CNN thinks this is important to us.

And as for hopefully my last comment on such: Race is irrelevant unless you focus on it. Telling minorities that they are unsuccessful because of their skin color, while Asians become upper-middle class in 2 generations, is insidious. You are what you want to be in the end. Before a person gets up on his or her high horse and starts preaching to you about racism to score points with the minority world they need to get one thing straight. Racism is on both sides of the fence, non-whites andwhites. As long as racism incubates and thrives in the prison system there will surely be racism. Racism will likely be around until 100s of years from now when the majority of blood is so mixed we can't easily tell the difference anymore like we supposedly think we can now.

Almost everytime you hear about racism in cookie cutter articles like this the finger pointing tends to lean toward whites. To talk about equalizing in arrest statistics, hiring statistics among other ratios is racist in itself presuming that those doing the arresting or hiring are always white. If you're arrested or applying for a job any form you fill out that requires you to check a box for race is racist itself because it asks you to select a color from the politically correct color palette, to segregate yourself the other colors and from the idea that we are all the same.

When you make a point, point your finger straight up. Yes there is racism on the part of whites but if you don't know who is doing the hiring, the arresting, the accepting or rejecting then don't just assume a person is getting rejected simply because the rejector was of one race and the rejectee was of another.

"Person of color" or, in this case "man of color" are accepted nomenclature. For example, "People of color may identify with each other as a result of facing similar barriers even though they don't have the same ethnic backgroun". The offensive term I assume you're thinking of is "colored person". Lindsey Lohan made a similar mistake when she called Obama the first "colored" president. What she probably meant to say was that Obama is the first person of color to become president. I realize there's a fine line of distinction between the two terms but it gives credence to the author's position that this issue is too complicated to be declared resolved.

Racism, as described in America, is more a black community phenomenon, than what the media would like us to believe.

In truth most "racism", has NOTHING to do with skin color. It is simply an improper term being applied to a much more universal phenomenon, of "tribalism", where skin color is not truly the issue, as it can occur entirely within 2 groups of the same exact race, but rather is about behavior, and culture.

The truth is, we, as humans, align ourselves with the traditions and behaviors of our own culture........and any other culture, is "foreign" to us, whether that culture is ethnic, or geographic.

The entire issue of "race" in America has never been about skin color, but rather behaviors, that those who comprised other cultural standards, different from our own, were rejected. That holds true for groups of the same race, but different cultural backgrounds, which totally destroys the entire "race" argument.

The black community, however, has chosen to practice the cultural background brought here from Africa, and to retain those behavioral practices that Europeans and other cultures, may find objectionable. That results in charges of "racism" which are simply invalid.

If there is any true "racism" that is ONLY about skin color, I would propose that it is within the black community, as a reaction to the supposed "racism" of the white community..........which in fact, is a consortium of communities, in the first place.

Since tribalism, which is what we truly see being called "racism", is so prevalent in human society, in all parts of the world, and indeed within groups of the same race, in many parts of the world, its prevalence would simply imply there will NEVER be a resolution to the impact of that tribal behavior acceptance factor, in human society. (In truth, the same things apply in other parts of the animal world, and not just humans.)

What we have to do, is recognize that different cultural groups have different acceptable codes of conduct. Until we recognize that, and take on the accepted codes of conduct for mixed company, in our society, we will never even get along, much less rid ourselves of the stigma of the "racial" connotation.

We must however, begin to recognize the truth, that this phenomenon is NOT about skin color, st all, but rather that skin color is simply an outward sign, that someone might have certain behavioral traits, that others would reject, and until that impression is dispelled by acceptable behaviors, the person will be kept "at arm's length".

It is amusing, how humans have such a propensity to perpetuate myths, for such long periods of time, and we can only assume that occurs, partly, because humans cannot bring themselves to have serious and open discussion about controversial subjects..........like codes of conduct.

I suppose the fact that segregation literally separated whites and blacks, that blacks were targeted by the KKK escapes you Rick. Tribalism was destroyed by the middle passage which broke up any family connections. Slavery further isolated blacks to plantations. White slavers sold the enslaved and demanded higher costs for lighter skin blacks. Racism is real but in the last 50 years at least we have tried to fight it. You would minimize the whole ethnic experience as the difference between on tribe and another. Tribal is circular......Western societies are linear.

Your argument sounds "pretty" and I guess you've spent a lot of time refining this argument so that it dispenses with or, in fact, actually justifies racism by calling it something else. But this just completely ignores the fact that immigrants (from a different culture – a different tribe) with light skin make MORE (17% more) than immigrants with darker skin, with all other factors equal. And the notion that blacks have continued with African traditions in their neighborhoods is hogwash. The traditions, and I will grant you there are many, actually developed out of embarrassment of slavery which had nothing to do with Africa. And it is our country's shame that such a culture developed here and we should own it. The fact that we, as white privileged Americans, continue to enjoy such a greater level of prosperity and opportunity and somehow argue that we deserve it, is testament to the fact that we have not owned our past and take no responsibility for it.

Really? I am a white woman with a good job and I regret not one step it took me to get here. I came from a very poor family growing up but wanted something better for myself. I paid for my own college ,continued education in the military, and worked hard along the way. That is the only way a poor person is going to pick themselves up out of poverty. I think poverty is a big issue here because the fact of the matter is that as a percentage of their population more blacks live in poverty than other races. But having the likes of Jesses and Al going around telling you it's the white man's falut because you live in that state it ridiculous. THere are too many black people who have worked their butt off to become successful and take slack from the own community for it! Now we have a President who creates class warfare with racial undertones to get some votes. The author is right there is a problem but he needs to spread the blame where it belongs.

Writing an editorial about how a "post-racial" America is a myth is the journalistic equivalent of shooting fish in a barrel. I don't know a single educated adult that has ever said we live in a "post-racial" era. It is a term entirely fabricated by the media so it can continue to report on itself and its notions.
That being said, I do know a lot of people who would probably tell you things are better now than say, 30 or 50 years ago. Yes, there are a disproportionate amount of "colored" men incarcerated; some of this should be reformed, but much of it has to do with very serious crime being committed by a disprportionate number of blacks and latinos. I could say the same about whites. Where do you think more crime occurs? Is it in the suburbs where the median income is over 100K or is it in the rural, back water trailer parks where many are unemployed or unemployable?

With all due respect ma'am, the US Dept. of Agriculture released the following figures for 2010:
49% of all participants are children (17 or younger),
15% of all participants are elderly (age 60 or over).
20% of all participants are non-elderly disabled people.
35% of participants are White; 22% are African-American, not Hispanic; 10% are Hispanic; 2% are Asian, 4% are Native American, and 19% are of unknown race or ethnicity
So the only reason you believe that persons of color are getting "free food" from the government is based upon your prejudicied ideas about people of those races. As the old saying goes though, It's funny that most of the historic places spoken of in the Bible, was NE Africa. People that ran from the tierney ran further north. This type of rhetoric is what continues to divide the world. Some ignorant so and so must make him/herself feel better or more important by proclaiming they are better than someone else. By what standards do you make such a claim?

I think post-racial means that the majority of Americans do not make judgements based on the color of a person's skin. The older generations (baby boomers & WW2) don't fully get this since the society they grew up in was very prejudiced.

There is too much focus on "Race" this is what the media wants to focus on because it helps them sell advertising. Too say absolutely anything to typify an entire race other than they are of that race is wholly incorrect. We have issues sure but the fact is what makes a responsible adult is typically being raised by responsible parents. To say black people this or white people are that or Asians or Indians are always, is a simpleton's way of attempting to grasp society. One common denominator that most successful adults have whatever their race was an upbringing by caring parents. And while most parents that put in the time for their children need no reward, we as a country need to hold parents accountable for their children and I believe our situation will improve for all people of all races.

I really want people of all races to see what Tim Wise really is. Tim Wise is not an educated person nor has he undergone any post graduate education. He's nothing more than than some guy that thinks that everything white people do is wrong and that they are everything wrong with America. Which in fact may be true, who's really to say? But he presents his information in away that comes off as ignorant and one-sided, it just so happens that his one-sided self-centeredness comes from the perspective of white against white instead of white against black or white against brown. I recalled reading "White Like Me" and almost all of the material on the book was greatly one sided and the only opposing arguments he wrote about came from absolutely ridiculous whites.

He also talks about "white privilege" and how white people get better jobs than blacks and that extent, which again is a valid point, but he makes it seem like when white people walk into a room people just start throwing them jobs. If I could meet Tim Wise, the first thing I would do is take him to where I spent my time as an undergrad, 200 miles from New York City and show him entire counties of whites who are definitely not experiencing "white privilege".

Racism and discrimination is a social problem in the U.S. So are a lot of things such as crime, the economy, immigration, among many others. What I would also like to tell Tim Wise is that the U.S. is more advanced in terms of civil rights than about 85% of the globe. If he were truly a "anti-racist" activist or whatever he claims to be, he'd be concerned about the treatment of minorities all over the globe. This is a marketable thing that people praise him for so he keeps writing one sided books and one-sided people keep calling them "education". And he keeps writing the same thing over and over. Every time I see an article from this man, it seems to be the same thing as the last time he wrote an article.

I would say that he is actually the reason that an anti-racist movement can't seriously get off the ground and reach people in farther places. Do you think white people are going to react well to a white guy telling them "you're the reason why everything is wrong in the lives of minorities?" He needs to seriously reconsider the way he presents his information and present it in a way that is 1)rational 2)can be understood by all and 3)a little bit better researched.

I, more than anyone else want to see a decrease in racism in this country. The sooner we get past racist tendencies the quicker we move forward. But racism exists everywhere on earth and before we start tackling the problems of "racism", I truly think Americans, as a society need to address some other issues and Americans need to be educated on other things before any progress in the realm of racism is going to be made.

Racism will always be around as long as man is alive. And that includes racism against blacks, asian, hispanics and whites. Yes whites. It is almost impossibe for any white person to say they are not racist and have anyone else believe them. Have you ever applied for anything where race is not taken in consideration? You get points if you are a minority. There are overwhelmingly more scholarships available for non-whites. In California however, white is the minority. Look at the UC system and see that it's vast majority is non-white. I'm all for equality. If you deserve it, you deserve it, race excluded. If you don't, you don't. I do get tied of the fall back claim, that it's because of my race I don't get what I want. Sometimes that is the case, but often it is simply because I don't deserve it.

Those that were fortunate enough to be located in the Northern Hemisphere had access to a better climate, husbandry, and trade. Because of this, civilizations in the Southern Hemisphere were easily exploited, this has nothing to do with color of skin...just roll of the dice.

Blunttalk, I find your comments almost laughable. Do you actually believe that a point system has allowed people to receive employment that they didn't deserve? Having been born in the 60's, experienced racism, witnessed it I can assure you that there are only few that actually benefited from the point system. However there were legal reasons (facing a law suit) or possible funding being denied that allowed people whom were not so qualified to have a positon to obtain it.

There are many issues there, including people never having been giving the education needed. As a Black man in America, I always find it funny that America thinks that after a 47 years of Civil Rights legislation having been passed everything is equal.

Unfortunately the bigest issues with why racism still exist across the world is human nature. A feeling or need to feel superior above another. Our first problem is as we all walk down the street we see with our eyes, then our minds open to our negative, insecure, bias, bigot and racist conitations. Racism/bigotry is both a color, class and economic issue. My point is it is such a complicated situation and man being human, racism will never go away. Our own ignorance will always allow it surface. It is here to stay unfortunately.

The biggest key is education, not just basic education, but appreciation for other cultures. My father having served in the Navy took me to places most people only dream of going to. It was due to this expose though, I learned of other cultures, both to appreciate them, understand them better, and accept their ways and culture. And not trying to force my ways upon them. In my opinon, education, understanding, tolerance is the key to us as a people overcoming racism. But that will never happen with our media, hollywood and people like Newt spitting out false images of people of color.

This article is, in itself, racist. There are fundamental differences in culture between whites, blacks, latinos, asians, etc.. There are no programs to help white people with the cost of college, or shall I say, no special programs. Blacks and latinos have more available to them than any other demographic. Don't blame whites for why they are still disproportionately falling behind. It's completely asinine that anyone could possibly think that whites are the root cause of all inequality in this country. We have a black man in the white house. Anything is possible for anyone, but you're not going to get anywhere unless you work pretty damn hard to get there.

Gee, do you think Latinos may be having a difficult time in america because they are trying to raise an 8 member family on a single unskilled laborer job? How many black children are being raised without their fathers? I suppose it's the white man behind all of this? These are all facts people. It's unfortunate that facts are routinely discarded in favor of out of control liberalism that aims only to take from those who made their own way in life to give to those that will never do anything but cash government checks.

The way you solve race issues is you embrace the differences not someone pretend they don't exist. Talk about, fight about it, make jokes about it, own it – the good, the bad and the ugly.

The reality is that most times we simply don't deal with it, we try and sugarcoat it, legislate, whitewash it (no pun intended), as if not talking about somehow will make it go away.

Comedians tend to be the only safe venue for talking about differences. We laugh because we realize what they say is true but also we laugh because it may make us uncomfortable.

My wife is of a different race than I and I love the differences, all of it. The cultural background, the distinctive physical characteristics, all of it. And while I find those very differences incredible attractive, she is beautiful unto herself and there is no need for me to compare her to some phony standard.

Though we often clash about things due to our very different backgrounds (which, race or no race, is common between all couples), when we step back and look at it we realize that it is the differences – like sharp rocks banging against each other in a stream will become smooth – that helps us become better as individuals and, more importantly, as a couple.

As my wife said one time when someone said to her that with her they don't see color: "You better damn well recognize my color and embrace it."

Funny how no one claimed racism when 90% of black registered voters voted for Mondale, 90% for Dukakis, 85% Clinton. 95% for Gore, does that ring a bell? 93% for Kerry, do you remember that? Blacks vote heavily for Democrats, not because of handouts as the small-minded would have you to believe, but because Democrats are typically for education, job growth, and equality. Blacks are also aware that during the Nixon Era, when the Southern Strategy was implemented, most segregationist Democrats left the party to become Dixicrats and on to the Republican Party. So don't waste your time telling us that MLK and Lincoln were Republicans; we're aware of that as well. Please, please, please stop singing that sad ole love song about blacks being racist because they voted for Obama at 95%; and do a little research first. Well to say that White people have the advantage....Yes we do for several reasons but not through any fault of our own. First there are more of us, last I checked (admittidely its been some time) we make up almost 70% of the population. Second most of us that work were brought up in the United States of the 70's, 80's and 90's when there was agreedaly more discrimination. Lastly alot, not all of the minorities that are unemployed were brought up in that same time period and therefore had less opportunity while we had more. To claim that America is racist isnt a lie, certain people (individuals) will always hate others but dont claim its all white on minorities. Racism is a conglomeration of roads not a one way street. All that being said I think most of the time people are hired or fired based on ability because lets face it: in todays economy its all about the bosses bottom line....

A very brittle strawman – if you can make those points (factual, indeed), then you must also know that the Civil Rights Act, pushed through by a Democratic (and Southern) President changed everything (see 1999 elections in the Deep South). By 1980, Reagan cleaned up in the 'Solid South'.

Give it a break dude, you're like the typical republican who always talks of the past (ie.Abraham Lincoln and so forth). No one is arguing about the past republican party when blacks used to vote for them, we are talking about the current one who have chosen in the mid 20th century that they would much rather align themselves with the southern white base who were against civil rights and blacks. Simply put- because the party that was once crucial in the emancipation of African Americans, has turned into one that promotes hate, lies, and intolerance.

What the entire human species needs to get through its collective head is that there is no such thing as race. We are all practically indistinguishable from one another. Our biology is for all intensive purposes the same, and any alien from another world would figure us all to be the same. In fact that alien would probably be so puzzled by us. It would ask in contemplation, why do these creatures so small and perceptually no different from one another, faction off into their deluded concepts of race, nation, faction, and tribe. That alien would shed a tear if it could, for that tiny insignificant spec of dust know as the earth with its singular species of thinkers dusted upon it. We must all come to grips with our place in the cosmos together because if we do not we will perish by our hands alone.

Your article is so true. I am white, and I agree 100 percent. A few years ago, before the real-estate bust, my husband and I bought a house. We looked at all neighborhoods in our city and the suburbs, and learned that the black neighborhoods were much less expensive than white neighborhoods. Houses are families' savings, allowing elderly to have care at the end of life. It's a terrible shame. The houses were better kept up in the black neighborhoods than many in the white neighborhoods. We had an opportunity to go to the suburbs (the white ghetto), but we chose a house in the middle of our city, in a friendly mixed neighborhood. We love our neighbors. People should try it; America is one country, and we should be one people. We have friends in other neighborhoods, and hear about crazy crime in other more white neighborhoods caused by the spoiled sons of rich families. There are problems in the poorest neighborhoods, but not so much in the places where people are trying to make life better for each other.

Look, There is a unculturistic perception among white people who were taught by thier family and friends as they grew up, and even by Blacks by watching blacks in such comedic situations as "sanford & Son", "the Jefferesons", "All in the Family" and certain cartoons which excluded african americans from heroic roles and charicatured them as well liked sidekicks, that Blacks are incapable of being Leaders. Theyre too angry and of lower I.Q's to provide relevant solutions to national predicaments. That they lack the capablility to govern even themselvses effectivly, let alone white people. I mean how can a black man raised in the ghetto's or inner cities be in anyway a match for the broader experiences encompassed in white culture and exposure. Overwhelmingly, blacks don't travel, they live in one place all their life, they learn from inadequate material and attempt to equate that experience with those of more affluent whites...hardely logical.

The truth however is that Blacks have matured faster than Whites, those poor blacks handle dissappointments better, they handle hardships better, they look longer term rather than shorter term better, and this is the reason white conservatives and younger white conservatives have a problem with Obama, He views things as they are and how they are developing over time, not how they should be or how we want them to be now.

Also, I have visited websites of various religious persuasions and still am not in any way religious, have visited the NRA website, but in no way identify with that group, etc, etc. often people are driven to websites because they read something in the media and google the subject to find more details. Making a sweeping statement like the one you make does a disservice to everyone.

Race is a factor and always will be. We won't ever get rid of the darker sides of our nature. But it's not the only problem. For instance, darker skinned immigrants earn less than lighter skinned immigrants? Well, statistically the darker skinned immigrants come from the poorer areas of the planet. A Nigerian immigrant who comes with no skill and takes a job as a Taxi Driver will earn less than a French banker who takes a job on Wall Street. Drug laws? Poverty drives drug addiction, not all of it, but a lot of it. If you cast a net and pull in 1,000 drug users, more of them will be minorities because more minorities live in poverty. There is the REAL issue to look at. It's roots are historic and multi generational. There aren't easy answers. Even if racism can be turned off like a light switch, and it won't, much of what this article talks about will be around for generations.

Poor Timmy's newest white guilt book must not be doing well. Talk about a cottage industry, holy crap. This guy can pile on all the cherry picked statistics he wants. The fact is that as of right now, most African Americans and Latinos live in the inner city. Those neighborhoods are without a doubt economically disadvantaged. What Mr. Wise and most of the white guilt crowd don't tell you is that the unemployment and income figures for Caucasians are statistically identical inside those same confines. You don't need to do a study on that, the government has done it for you and the data is in the latest census. As a matter of fact, this must be an opinion column because I don't see anywhere within the article that he sites one academically approved study for his statistics.

Those people that don't want to see the world become "post-racial" are spending a lot of time and energy to convince all Americans otherwise. The reason I choose to see the world as "post-racial" is because when viewed through that perspective, it makes those individuals or portion of society that wish it not to be so, like Mr. Wise or on the other end of the spectrum his Arien Nation friends, appear that much more repugnant. I like George Carlins idea, if people in this country are so hell bent on building fences, let's build one around a portion of our own soil and put people like Mr. Wise, David Duke and all their divisive friends in it and let them kick the crap out of one another. The rest of us would be better off as a result.

The more we focus on the color of peoples' skin the more we cause the racism of today. Teach our children not to identify people by their race but by their individuality. The world would be a much more loving place.

What underlines that? Screw the country. We are going to do ... whatever we can to get this black man out of here. Pressed by Piers Morgan, he insisted, "It is a racist thing." Freeman continued, "It just shows the weak, dark underside of America." SO according to Mr. Freeman, if you vote against O'bama your a racist.

Racism is a cancer. Ignoring cancer doesn't make it go away. Cancer needs to be named and treated so it can be eradicated. Likewise, pretending that racism doesn't exist won't make it go away. Racism needs to named and treated so it can be dealt with. Let's talk about it and use the conversation as an opportunity to change what's wrong! Being color blind will not end racism.

        This guy puts it best:

The trouble with being colour-blind is that it blinds you. Most white people are so blind to racism that they think it is dead or no longer a big deal. Which leaves racism unexamined, unfought and unopposed. And stuck somewhere in the forever of 1974.

American society was built in a racist way. Being colour-blind does little to change that. It does not, for example, help poor, black children get a better education. Or help more black babies to live. Or keep most Lakota Indians from dying before age 60.

If you are colour-blind you have no way to see and fight the racist lies that America is built on. It is like having a broken radar.

Noticing race is not the same thing as being racist. Dr King is a good example of that. Racism is the belief that one race is naturally better than another. Seeing people’s race does not by itself lead to that conclusion. What does is the idea that being different is somehow bad, that there is something wrong with it. Dr King did not talk about “seeing” colour but rather judging people by it instead of their character.

Not noticing race, on the other hand, means not seeing racism. Because you do not see all the ways race plays out in American society.

If you are a person of colour that means you do not understand how racism affects you, it means you see the racist lies of white people as the truth. And that can lead to doubt, confusion, wasted years, bad marriages, drink, drugs, even self-destruction. It is called internalized racism.

Racism is a disease. Shutting your eyes to it, not noticing its operation, will not make it go away or lessen its effects.

Yes, if in a hundred years racism truly does die then people will be colour-blind because colour will no longer matter. But to be colour-blind now means colour will continue to matter.

Please show me a black neighborhood anywhere in America that is a safe place to live and has a low crime rate. The black race has done nothing to help themselves and they never will. No matter how many free handouts they get welfare, food stamps, housing education and affirmative action the race cannot better themselves. Drive through a black neighborhood between normal work hours and you will see a ton of young black men just hanging out everywhere and then drive into a white neighborhood and see how many young white males you see hanging out during work hours. You can't hide the facts. Yes, there are some good blacks trying to better them, selves, but the majority is just committing crime and having kids out of wedlock that they will never support or be a part of their life. No, he was referring to all immigrants. Let's compare both Asians and Africans, however, to the white school children that are already here; all the immigrants work hard to learn English, reading, math, and higher subjects. The white students, for the most part, have parents who value sports over reading time. But the white students are given job preference, even over the Asians. Your argument is wrong.

Since the election of Obama, more and more white people have come out of the wood work with hatred and vitriol towards minorities. They feel that since Americans have elected a black president that they can come out and say all these nasty things about non-whites and that it should be tolerated. I can't wait for this country to go back to showing its true colors and that is a country full of racists and furthermore, I can't wait until Hispanics become the majority in this country so that maybe we can eliminate most of these Nazi Americans in this country and elsewhere.

We didnt take part in any of the slavery issues, yet we have to pay for all these people on welfare, WIC, medicare, and every other hand out democrat program. Stop giving them what they want, and let them fend for themselves. Cant afford your 9 kids, DONT HAVE THEM. Racism didnt stop 400 yrs ago and most of the immigrants you speak of perpetuated racism when they wanted to be integrated into msinstream society, even if their families weren't the original slave owners. The civil rights movement happened about only 40 yrs ago. It didn't happen for no reason. White acceptance of history doesn't have to white guilt. No one wants that. But, I'll tell you what's really unhelpful-white delusion. The desire to rewrite history and the present manifestations of it, so they don't bad and then turning racist. That is just one becoming exactly what one claims they are not-ignorant and racist.

Although I can understand your frustration with bigots and all the prejudice that goes around white America for the most part aren't Nazis, come on now.

You should put your efforts towards the black Nazis that stop real life programs like what was tried to improve the DC public education system. What happened there is just a slap in the face to all black people that work hard to build a strong and prosperous community and eggs on the bigots and racists as it further justifies their views.

I think there is s still a very large educational, income, and general economic gap between many of the races, but I also think this incorrectly gets labeled "racism." The past disparity existed because of systematic programs in place that made it almost impossible for minorities to climb out of ruts society had artificially placed them in (segregation, poll tax, etc.) Now, however, I think the active, pronounced racism has long since stopped. The thing is, it can take multiple generations to pull out of a deep rut. That disparity still exists doesn't surprise me, and I'm all for trying to do something to speed up the process of recovery, but to say the disparity remains because of active, entrenched racism isn't true. The odd wacko isn't really an accurate reflection of 95% of the country. The phrase "post-racial" doesn't mean racial issues are gone. It just means active racism is dying out. Many of the consequences of past racism remain, but constantly hunting active racism today is the real unicorn hunt.

    Thanks JC.
It is obviously apparent that most of the comments posted here exhibit exactly the type of behaviors that Tim Wises' article discussed. White people get over it! You enslaved millions of people from a continent, subjected them to the most brutal and inhumane treatments for centuries. That didn't stop with so called emancipation. You continued to brutalize them murdering and disenfranchising them unmercifully. In 1965 the Voting Rights Act was enacted, just to make sure that these people could even enjoy the right to participate in this freedom without fear of being physically assaulted or even killed, or without some sort of poll tax or literacy test. The results from that treatment have been ingrained in a whole subculture of this country's residents and 50 or 100 years of so called freedom is not going to completely eradicate the effects of it. Face it, you won, you subjagated a whole group of people and now you want to pretend that there are no residual effects that will linger on after that treatment.

I could go on but, I'm sure the morons on this post will have a field day with just this small snippet! C'mon boys and girls put your sheets back on and let the comments begin!

If you are going to make a statement please make sure that it is factual. The people who were sold were not slaves in Africa. You are right there was slavery in Africa but, it was far different than what your ideal of slavery is based on what it was here. Think of it the same way as you would the practice of indentured servitude which was another name for slavery that whites practiced themselves. You do know, don't you, that whites basically purchased the services of other whites for either a stipulated amount of time when the debt would supposedly be paid off? In fact there are were a number of cases where that "servitude" lasted for the entire life of the "servant". Sounds like slavery to me.

        February 1, 2012 at 11:53 am | Report abuse |
      • Momof3

jonesy – maybe you should check your facts. The blacks sold into slavery in Africa were usually captured people from enemy tribes. They were, in effect, slaves of that tribe. And, slavery still exists in Africa today, read about Blood Diamonds and Blood Chocolate. Blood choclate is made from cocoa beans that are harvested by children that have either been abducted or sold by their own parents into slavery.

Your comparison of slavery to indentured servitude is absurd. Slaver owners OWNED the person, employeers of indentured servants owned the DEBT that servant owed. The indentured servant was under a contract, albeit not all were ethical, and the servitude lasted for a pre-determined period of time in order to work off the debt that was owed. Not at all the same thing...

      • jonesy

        Acutally to Mom of 3.
Facts are correct. To say that all Africans were captured purely as a result of existing tribal conflicts were sold as slaves is ludicrous. I don't think that tribal economies could have supported the 10 million or so slaves transported to the New World. The reason that the vast majority of those people were enslaved was to satisfy the demand for slaves in the New World. Read drc's comment and then mine and if you don't think indentured servitude was a form of slavery then I would suggest that you read Bury the Chains.

The fact that slavery exists today within Africa is consistent with the greed established from the precolonial period up until now.
