Opinion: Tim Wise: What is post-racial? Reflections on denial and reality

Editor’s note: Tim Wise is the author of six books on race, including his most recent: Dear White America: Letter to a New Minority.  He tweets at @timjacobwise.

By Tim Wise, Special to CNN

(CNN) - Being asked to describe what “post-racial” means is a bit like being asked to describe a leprechaun, cold fusion or unicorns: we know what is meant, but, if we are willing to be honest, we also know that none of the four describe something real, something tangible, something true.

To me, “post-racial” is little more than a nonsense term devised by people (mostly white, frankly), who would simply rather not deal with the ever-present reality of racism and ongoing racial discrimination.

It is a diversion, intended to paper over the divisions that have long roiled our nation, and continue to do so today.

Though some sincerely believe this describes America’s reality– especially since a man of color was elected president - the illogic of believing this signals the veritable death of racism should be apparent: after all, we certainly wouldn’t claim that sexism and patriarchy had been smashed in Pakistan, India, Great Britain, Israel or the Philippines just because they all have elected women as heads of state.

Perceptions of discrimination a black and white story

To believe that the United States is post-racial requires an almost incomprehensible inability or unwillingness to stare truth in the face.

How can we be post-racial, after all, when the typical white family has 20 times the net worth of the typical black family, and 18 times that of the typical Latino family?

How can we be post-racial when studies find that even white men with criminal records are more likely to be called back for job interviews than black men without them, even when all other credentials and personal characteristics are indistinguishable?

How can we be post-racial when evidence suggests that the lightest-skinned immigrants earn roughly 17% more than the darkest-skinned immigrants, even when qualifications and levels of productivity are the same?

How can we be post-racial when Asian Americans, Latinos and blacks with college degrees are anywhere from one-third more likely to nearly twice as likely to be unemployed as their white counterparts? When schools serving mostly students of color are more than ten times as likely to be places of concentrated poverty, and far more likely to have the least experienced teachers?

How can we be post-racial when people of color continue to be so disproportionately targeted by our nation’s drug laws?

Although whites use drugs just as often as blacks (and more often than Latinos), it is people of color who comprise nearly 90% of persons incarcerated for a drug possession offense.  And it is people of color who are disproportionately stopped and searched for drugs and other illegal contraband, even though they are no more likely (and sometimes less likely) to be in possession of such items than whites are.

How can we be post-racial, when presidential candidates are either too afraid to raise these issues publicly, for fear of voter backlash (as with the Democratic incumbent), or willing to shamelessly exploit racial anxieties and resentments (as with at least one of the primary Republican challengers) by calling President Obama the “food stamp” president, or suggesting that poor black kids have “no habits of work” and should be made to clean their own schools as janitors?

This, despite the fact that most people in poor communities do work, and black teenage unemployment rates (now well over 40 percent) reflect only those black teens who are searching for jobs, and thus, by definition already have a solid work ethic, lacking only the opportunities to put that ethic into practice.

Sadly, the claims of America’s equanimity and post-raciality are not really new.

Even in the early 1960s, before the passage of civil rights legislation, at a time when we were still a formal apartheid state, polls found that a vast majority percent of whites already believed that blacks had just as good a chance to obtain a good job, housing or a good education as we or our children did.

In other words, white denial - one might say, delusion - on the matter of the nation’s racial reality has been longstanding.

It’s hard to say when or if we will actually arrive at that place called “post-racial”, or, better yet, post-racism.

But until whites begin naming streets in our neighborhoods after Martin Luther King, and naming the schools that our children attend after him (rather than fearing that such a designation might signify that our kids attend a “ghetto school”), I know for certain we are not “post-racial” yet.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Tim Wise.

Why is White racial survival a taboo topic in this society?

Because of the anti-White PC religion that demands that all White people must celebrate our own geNOcide, or be ex-communicated as “naziswhowanttokillsixmillionjews”

People say there is this RACE problem and this RACE problem will be solved when the third world pours into EVERY White country and ONLY into White countries. They say the final solution to this RACE problem is for EVERY White country and ONLY White countries to “assimilate,” i.e., intermarry, with all those non-Whites. It’s really just the final solution to the White problem. It’s genocide.

Every white country on the planet is forced to become "multicultural" and multiracial. EVERY white country is told to end its own race and culture. No one asks that of ANY non-white country. Immigration and intermarriage is for EVERY white country and ONLY white countries.

Anti-whites call themselves "anti-racists", but their actions lead to the elimination of one race and only one race, my race, the white race. The true goal of anti-racism is to wipe out my race.

    It is geNOcide.

America is a "white"country? I'm native-American...I thought it was my country. Of course, european settlers forcibly murdered my people–THAT'S genocide.

If you're speaking about 18th-20th century America as being "white"–may I remind you that this was the time of greatest immigration and the very core of America was the embracing of people from other countries...or is that embrace just reserved for white immigrants?

Ok maybe you mean 21st century America–well, actually, white people are no longer the majority by terms of population. The official projections have that happening in 8 yrs (2020) but statisticians concede that if all the people counted as "white" on the census were taken out separated on the basis of how they classify THEMSELVES, right now today, white people wouldn't be a majority (currently, census data conflates "whiteness" with the inclusion of many hispanic groups [even if they check non-white–if you put mexican you are counted as white], and middle eastern people [a huge campaign was formed by and for peopleof middleeastern decent: "check it right, you aint white"].

So in what way is america a "white" country EXCEPT in terms of the unjust hoarding of power and wealth? So if in THAT sense you want to accuse people of wanting to eradicate "white" america, then guilty as charged–proudly!

Africa isn't becoming non-black. African people don't have a policy of mass non-black immigration and assimilation forced upon them.

Asia isn't becoming non-Asian. Asian people don't have a policy of mass non-Asian immigration and assimilation forced upon them.

Yet EVERY white country has to accept a policy of mass non-white immigration and assimilation that no one ever voted for.

The anti-whites want a mixed, blended humanity for EVERY white country ONLY White countries.

        They want white genocide.

If I hated a race, I might campaign to flood all of their countries with millions of people that are not their race, and tell everyone to “mix in”, until no people of that kind were left. If anyone objected, I would scream R-word! at them and get them fired from their jobs.

If I hated a certain race, I might do that. But I am not doing that. Anti-whites are doing it to White people in all White countries and only White countries.

White People can never disprove we are “racist”, our very existence is seen as a form of “racism” by the so-called “anti-racists”.

They say all things White must become “diverse” or it is “racism”.

They say there should be no White countries, no White communities, no White schools, no White sports, no White social gatherings, etc, etc.

The anti-Whites give us Whites two choices: Accept White geNOcide or you are a “racist”.

Around 1960, White countries opened their borders and let millions of non-Whites in.

Then, the government and media told us all to “assimilate” or “mix together”.

And slandered ALL White people who did not want this forced integration and assimilation of our communities and families, as "Racists".

And now, Whites are expected to be minorities in most White countries by 2040 as predicted by the United Nations.

If this was done to ONLY Asian countries, would you still need proof that some people are trying to permanently get rid of Asian people by blending them out of existence, AKA genocide? Would you need the newspapers or some commentator to tell you this?

Can you see why “Anti-racism” is a codeword for anti-White?

No, white guilt is what some of the white folks on this board are experiencing, not Mr Wise. Those of you who are so violently offended by this article, deep down you know there is a problem with regards to race and equality in this country, yet you do nothing to combat it, some of you may even contribute to racial problems Mr. Wise spoke of.

Some of you feel guilty with regards to your inaction, so in response you project outwards all the negativity you embody and blame black and brown people and white folks who are actually trying to make a difference.

Dumb point. Your premise that we are projecting the negativity inside ourselves outward is immpossible to argue (or prove for that matter). Maybe we REALLY think this article is the crap that it is. And maybe we REALLY think that playing the race card over and over is getting old and tiresome. Maybe we REALLY think that content of character means something instead of the color of ones skin. Maybe we REALLY want to get past the affirmative action-naacp mentality that minorities are being wronged and attacked and or deprived of opportunities so let's just give them what they want. Maybe we REALLY want all to be equal, respected and self sufficient and not relying on the government for things they ought to work for. Yea, I know, it's alot to swallow. Easier to just say something stupid like 'deep down inside you know you're wrong and all that negativity is being projected outward'.

It also shows that white perpetrators outnumber blacks in most major categories. You may want to consider researching facts to support your bold statements before making them.

...so what if Racism is just an idea.... like any other but comes from some old survival instinct that is part of our old lizard braining thinking.... Anything that sticks out or is different we feel is a threat or risk, so we push against it. Our intelligent side of our brains can overrule the lizard brain instinct but takes some work/training/education/practice/etc. Cancer as it turns out is the bodies repair cycle that is stuck "on" and cells grow where they are not supposed to..... just another idea, but his one from mother-nature that had a bad twist to it when it does not actually help us out anymore and thus our survival DNA code may ironically kill us in that case. It is so tempting to think in old survival skill instinct ways...after all it got us to this point. Like us against them thinking. USA vs. Russia, or now USA vs. China...but we all link back to the same grandmother in Africa on some massive family tree somehow. Maybe it will take a space alien invasion to get us to all work together.... maybe some world wide project and lets hope something cool like a mission to colonize the moon (when we pay our debts back first), or get to mars and I hope it is not some giant meteor on a planet killing path that forces us to work together (or insert zombie disease metaphor joke here instead). Turns out of course that we do have these universal monsters we are fighting (hunger, lack of education, clean water, disease, etc). It will be interesting if just talking about it and reducing fear of the unknown about the perceived other side will help us all get along (thank you internet/cell phone/thisforum/etc). ....what if this idea (racism) that used to protect us..... needs to become extinct to let our evolution advance to the next level, as we all need to work together to fight the real monsters our future survival requires. Can't we all just get along? A super bird-flu or other world threat may force us to work together and get over our perceived differences that lead to racism. I hope we can appreciate it is the differences that give us value/strength/power vs. the other way around as it sure would be boring if we were all the same. Maybe having a black president who has just as many problems as a white one gets us to realize its not a black/white thing...its a problem thing now. In my eyes, your either see yourself as a problem solver, or as a victim, a doer or a complainer.... Like anyone that has something bad happen to them, I am so sorry for your pain and that was not right or fair, but don't fall trap to being a victim in the future based on your past. Now that we know better, lets all do better!

The word "RACISM" is being used without thought, if you cannot affect and/or inflect injustice on an individual or group you cannot be a racist. You are just prejudice, hateful, or Satan’s little servant. To be a racist implies that you have power to pass and enforce an injustice in a situation which most time affect human beings.

Nah, you're trying to draw a distinction that lets individuals off the hook. Racism is judging another person or group based on negative beliefs you have about that person's ethnic group or race. You don't have to have power to be racist, though if you do have power, your racism is likely to have more significant impact on others than if you don't. But the factors that give rise to racism – fear, conditioning, ignorance – are the same regardless of who the person is and the moral imperative to confront your own inherent racism is the same regardless of how much power you have.

It is good to see an article like this. It is so important the we keep putting this issue in peoples faces....whether they are uncomfortable or not. Racisim is alive and well especially in the work place. I believe that 400+ years of conditioning the black man and women is paying off. Not much effort has to be made to remind blacks that they should not expect to much, and be happy to have a job. I watch as unqualified whites are handed promotions while blacks with 17 years on the job are passed over. That in itself is enough to remind black employees that they should not try to get ahead. I could go on forever with this subject, but i won't.

You are full of CRAP! Your post is one big lie! You do NOT know of a black person more qualified than a white who sits back and doesn't get promoted. You know why? Because they would have ran screaming and crying to the EEOC and Office of Civil Rights raising all holy hell! Give me a break! In the federal district where I practice law 90% of all NEW cases filed are race discrimination cases. Of those, more than 80% are dismissed due to not having any merit or backing of law. Of the rest of those, a majority are found for the defendant. You know why? Because as a matter of law, race discrimination cases are hard to prove and have a high legal hurdle to overcome. If you are easily offended and are constantly looking for discriminatory practices (naacp) you will find it everywhere you look.

The sad part of all this is that we still cannot look past skin color. In modern society, color still helps or hinders, through means such as affirmative action, and employer bias. Its too bad that the US cannot move on and operate with a true meritocratic system. The comments just prove this.

Ian, unless you have a truly objective test for a particular job , there will never be a pure meritocratic system because there is always some subjectivity and bias. The best we can hope for is a relatively fair system that allocates unfairness fairly, if that makes any sense.

Here's a solution. How about everyone stop making a big deal about this? Yeah racism may still be in existence, but we tend to think about it more when someone brings it up. right? Maybe if we just stop letting this topic bother us, racism will go away. Racism is only here because maybe people want it here. They act like they don't want it but maybe the truth is...they do. Stop feeling victimized, that is the main reason why everyone is acting racist towards each other. Stop feeling sorry for yourself just because you aren't the same race as other people. Stop feeling like the whole world hates you and your race. Stop feeling sorry for yourself that one race might have more benefits than the other. Stop bringing up issues about racism because it's racist of you to bring it up in the first place. So who's the true racist? The people who bring it up, or the people who feel victimized? Truth is, we're all considered racist in some way. If people can just grow up and stop fighting over such a dumb issue, we can forget about it. It's like children fighting over food and who should get the most of it. Fighting only to benefit themself and not everyone else. So all in all, I am saying that Racism is a selfish, childish, and dumb issue. Stop trying to benefit yourself and try benefiting the rest of the world.

I'm not sure if ignoring the issue would be the best solution. Our current understanding of racism within the United States is based on our history and the psychological effects of our past. The author, Tim Wise, is attempting to create a dialogue about our denial towards racism today. If the civil rights leaders just ignored the Jim Crow laws or the brutality many people of color faced, do you really think it would have just gone way? It's definitely a difficult topic to discuss, however its imperative that this conversation takes place. I graduated from high school in 2003 and we had two homecoming queens, a white female and a black female. Talking about racism is not about feeling sorry for oneself, but feeling the need to make changes. To learn for the mistakes of the past and improve the outlook for the future. Be a voice of change!

EB, thank you for your comments. Personally I think that what upsets many is that people like the author of this article, Mr. Wise, take it on themselves to preach to others. What I mean by that is this: Many here have complained about the White media and how it presents America as a White only place with limited Black involvement. Mr. Wise is part of that establishment and if he believes in his own words then shouldn't he be giving up his position to a person of color? He will not do that because he believes he is better then any of the rest of us. He is an "enlightened" White person, which in the world that CNN occupies is the best thing to be... No one like to be preached too, especially by those who consider themselves better..

Hello. When the whites and the blacks, and most other races arrived to these United States.. my ancestors were here. Now we all know what happened, we know what history told us, and we know there are so few numbers of us in existance, we are forgotten about in this racism scuffle. My father was very dark skinned, and had pitch black hair/eyes. My skin is lighter, so we look latino I suspose. I look at my calendar, and I see no day, no month, none of our great leaders birthdays being celebrated. I see no channels on TV or Radio and not even any magazines specifically for our race, which several other races made a pretty good attempt at wiping off the face of earth (this goes back to suffering). So, can you racists blacks and whites, please .. go outside, because honestly, we, the other minorities that actually believe it or not did suffer much racism, well.. we'd appreciate it if you just take it outside, duke it out, get it out of your system and ... maybe stop thinking you two are the only races that matter. We all do... but see, I like to appreciate the person for who they are, if they are black, cool, if they are white, fine .. okay if they are purple, we'll have to ask some questions about their origins from a safe distance.. but my thing is.... might not be alot of us left, but we do exist, we still are here and we'd like you to.. maybe remember us to.. okay?

Racism is not here because people want it here. Racism is here because a significant percentage of people are racist and most people want them to stop behaving in a racist manner, especially the people who have to confront it. Sounds like it's not a problem for you, so you don't want to talk about it. That is invariably the response of people who want to trivialize and dismiss problems that don't affect them directly. I think America's obsession with confronting racism is a good thing, even if it is annoying and sometimes counterproductive. It shows we're still striving to really put the days of hatred behind us.

Maybe you should think more about it. You know what, as a black person I don't have the privilege of not thinking about race. I have to, every single day.. My very survival depends upon it. Only white people can see it as "not a big deal" because generally, race does not impact upon your life here in America.

White people need to think about it, real long, real hard. And keep in mind, it is not about fault finding and finger pointing. it's about making it more fair. We can't make it more fair and we can't get post racial until the denial ends, until the brushing it under the rug ends. And that's where I fault white people because they want to ignore race and act like they're colorblind until Dr. Laura says some stupid sh* or Don Imus or that fat, ignoramus Rush Limbaugh opens his blow hole. Those fools are all symptoms of a much, much bigger problem. So ask yourself, how's that ignoring sh* working out? It's not.

madamelaverite, it's about who gets to decide what is fair.. You keep saying "make things fair," but you also want to be the judge and jury on what is fair.. That is the issue, and what the discussion is basically about. There are extremists on both sides of this issue, but most on either side agree that there is/was a problem. The disagreement is mainly about that pesky word "fair."

I personally think learning American history is a good way to rid racism. History offers more than storytelling, cause and effect, and critical thinking. To me, the beauty of history is that we inherit, as a nation, an identity of who we are, albiet how much sun your skin gets. Thus, when we as a nation become separated by all of these variables of culture, race, religion, ideologies, etc, we all have something in common to touch bases with; we're Americans. It is true what he writes. I am a young black male. I will be attending University of Washington for doctoral work biomedicine. When I sit in college classes there are only white persons in all my classes. I am usually the only black person in my classes. Sometimes I feel like when I speak all eyes are on me. sometimes I am disturbed that there are not more blacks in school. It makes me feel alone at time. People want to talk about a post racial society. A post racial society will be one where magazine are not graced by thin, beautifully made up white women, but of of men and women of all different races. Hollywood is just another reflection of America. We are not okay with a black women playing a lead role in a major motion picture unless her skin is very close to white.Or if the movie is based on race. All faucets of our society are mainly occupied by white people, but at the same time, white people in America have always been in a position to gain opportunities that blacks have not always had. but I also feel like there is a declining sense of black culture, that black people are forgetting what we had to do to gain rights, and that they are not taking the past and pushing forward. I feel like blacks are complacent with where we are. Yes we face less racism openly, but we are not coming together as a community and helping one another, and often times blaming whites. How is it that latin americans, arab americans, and other immigrants come to american and work together? Maybe we as blacks are to complacent with the progress we have gained thus far. I feel like we can do better. I volunteer with juvenile delinquent kids and most are black, but I feel like I'm the only one trying to change my community. It sad to say that in my endeavors career wise my cohorts will often times be white, which is fine, but to have other black men and women studying science in the same way as me will let me know that I'm not some sort of "exception" to some unspoken rule, but that I am just like everyone else. Just another student going to school studying, not looked at for the color of my skin.

        @lol and matt

I believe the point that he is trying to make is that it is sad to see promotion of "post-racial" when America itself is not "post-racial." Call me biased when I say that I am black, but I have seen this. For the past eleven years of my life (in which I have lived in three different states; Missouri, Virginia, and Ohio), I have lived in predominantly white neighborhoods and gone to predominantly white schools and I always can tell, these people are rich or upper middle class. How can I tell? The classrooms are white. It has been proven in a study that people of a darker skin tone are economically and educationally at a disadvantage than those of a fairer skin tone. I have experienced living in black neighborhoods and I have seen the poverty and absolute hopelessness they experience. These kids who are geniuses are forced to go to terrible public schools because their parents (or parent) is too poor to move to a district where the education is better, do not have enough money to buy a computer (isn't that a shocker, a child with no access to the Internet or even a computer), cannot go to college because they have no opportunities to apply for a scholarship (no computer remember, especiallly since applying for colleges is online-based) and is forced to live out their lives working a low-paying job and all of their potential is wasted. Is it a wonder there are not many black people in graduate school? Without the proper OPPORTUNITY, a person cannot reap the benefits of America. And are we not the land of EQUAL opportunity? Therefore, we have completely forgotten what we have stood for as an American society. And as for lol's comment about him getting over it? It has only been approximately fifty years since the passing of the Civil Rights Voting Act and other Civil Right laws and even less time since we have started to shy away from being racist. You obviously do not understand what this means. It means racisim is real and alive. Just because we have turned our face away racism does not mean it exists. It has shaped every aspect of America and expecting it to disappear is impossible and illogical. The only way to cure a cancer is to WILLFULLY destroy it. And the same with racism. The only way to destroy it is to kill it willfully. I am not asking for a complete destruction of racism, because I know it is impossible. But I am asking for a society where racism is as minimal as possible. For race is only a difference of melanin in the skin. A child knows not to treat a white dog better than a black dog, so we must be with people. Just because a person is black, white, Asian, Arab, Indian, Hispanic, etc., does not mean that they should be treated badly, but that they are different. By the way, I am fifteen years old and a sophmore in high school. Shocked? All I have to say is I was lucky to have educated parents who made sure that I grew up educated, opinionated, and well-versed in politics, ethics, and history.

People of color literally create wealth from scratch, but there are plenty of white families who have a 400 year head start. All of these things were put in place BECAUSE black people were (and still ARE) shunned from their mainstream counterparts. It is such a feat for a black actor or actress to even get cast in a role that is worthy of an Oscar and if they are lucky enough to be nominated, they either don't win or they win just because they're the black sweetheart of the year (Jennifer Hudson did not deserve an Oscar for Dreamgirls) and it allows the academy to overlook black actors and actress for a couple more seasons.

Black fraternities and sororities? Seriously? I may say this because I go to University of Georgia, but what the hell do I look like joining a white sorority with racist daddies and probably racist national leaders. Every year I watch maybe three to five black girls from the dorm I work in participate in rush and maybe one gets into what I consider the nicer, less party oriented sororities where the girls are sweeter and don't feel the social pressure against having one token black girl. Because some of the white fraternities, to this day, will refuse to have socials with sororities who have black members. I play token black girl enough just by attending classes, I don't want to feel tokenized in a group about "sisterhood."

Black universities were created when black people were not admitted to white universities so that blacks could still receive a higher education. They created a legacy and were not just going to shut down because blacks were allowed into regular universities so clearly since they still exist, they still need funding.

How many black leading role characters do you see on television every night? Exactly. I don't mean the black best friend. I mean the leading role.

Again, there was a lack of representation of black people in magazines so black people created our own so that we could get advice for our hair textures, our body shapes, and skin care for our skin type. I don't even support mainstream magazines unless there is a black person on the cover because they are still not for me.

For those of you in denial of racism in America Let me share something with you. I was born and raise in NYC second generation "New Yoricans" a term given to all those Pueto Rican's that live in NYC. After experiencing much discrimination I decided to make a social experiment, the next time I needed to filled out an application I was going to list White as my race. The day came and I did as planned at a government agency. As I handed my application to the teller she looked at me and blatantly told me that I couldn't check that race box that I was either AA or Hispanic but not White.
When I asked her why not, she just responded "Because you are not white". Granted I dont have blue/green eyes or blond hair I was born in this country. Now, why is it ok for other to be called Americans even first generation immigrants from Italy,Germany,China, and others but not a Pueto Rican or any other Hispanic? If this is not racism then what is? America has and always would be racist!

You're saying it should be completely acceptable to lie on applications? Also, filling out those boxes are completely voluntary. If there was some benefit to checking off the 'white' box, I should've found a job a long time ago. There's actually more of a push for employers to hire minority workers instead of whites. My husband works at a machine shop that hired one black man as a janitor because the government forced him to. It's not to say he wouldn't hire one to run machines had they been qualified, but no one ever is. The token black guy is lazy, and knows he won't be fired or the company will be reprimanded for not having minority workers. He gets away with everything while the others do not. Check your facts.

      To Mrs. Balkcom:

I mean no disrespect to you. I don't know you as a person so please don't think I'm attacking you. But I gotta say...

Why would you think only white people would be blind to racism? I am a white woman and I myself (surprise surprise) have experienced loads of racism, not to mention all the racism I have seen with my own two eyes. So before you start pointing the finger at white people (who do have a track record of being racist too long to ponder, I'm ashamed to say) maybe you should ask yourself if you are racist for assuming all the racism is coming from white people. Racism isn't defined as a white person hating a black person, its defined as 1. The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, esp. so as to distinguish it as... 2. Prejudice or discrimination directed against someone of a different race based on such a belief. Does it say anything about white or black in there, or is it all in your head?

I'm certainly not saying there are no white racist people left in today's society (unfortunately) but to think that all white people are not only racist but have no idea they are racist is totally ignorant and I am sick of reading this kind of slander on chats.

All I am trying to say is that not all white people are racist, and to think so makes the thinker a racist.

      Thank you

He generalizes an catorgizes a large percentage of White people based on mmmmm.. nothing.. Most of the people who voted for President O'bama were White, ohh heck that's one of those pesky "facts" that the Ghost likes to ignore.. 🙂

        THE GHOST OF CESAR CHAVEZ
when is the last time we voted on a civil rights issue....yeah i thought so! What are you talking about with Arizona and Alabama, do you have any clue? Those issue's should be important to all Americans, regardless of skin color. So if you don't think those issue are important you need to recheck your "AMERICAN VALUES" and if you don't care, then don't comment. Further more, half of you have no clue what your talking about. Two wrongs can never make a right. But thats what we do everyday when we give minorities advantages everyday soley based on skin color, that is not a society conducting istelf in an unbiased manner, not by a long shot. Another major problem, well two others, are that minorities (blacks specifically) are not proud of their history (recent, distant, famlily, childhood, etc.) but they should be, even hardships are something to be proud of, because it makes 'ALL' of us stronger as individuals, it gives each person hope when that little voice in there head says "you have made it through much worse". But Black Americans, for the most part, are not taught this, (not White Americas fualt). White children on the other are taught this, and flaunt it on a regular basis and we are sene as racist because of it. You have to understand it is exptremely important for children to be proud of who they are and where they come from (hillbilly/redneck, city slicker, bible belt, rust belt, etc.) Secondly, people can argue all day about the work place and employemnt (whites being picked over blacks) bottom line, if you cannot conduct yourself in a PROFFESIONAL MANNER, during interviews, at the work place, ect. you will not be able to get or keep a job. And don't bring up that these are social, and cultural identifiers, that difine a people and we should take that into account, and if we don't we are being racist. Proffesionalism within the workplace has absolutely zero to do with who you are as a person outside of the workplace. Adjust to this or stay unemployed, asking somone to lower their standards might be how they do things in Brazil or Canada, but that is not how we do it here in the Ole U S of A!

Racism is present in uneducated neighborhoods of all nationalities, whether you are the racist or the victim of the racism. I have lived all over the US and have experienced “racism”. Most of the time what people claimed to be racism was just them trying to manipulate a situation in their favor and make noise. I am not naïve in thinking that there is no racism in the US but it is my belief and experience that it is concentrated in poor neighborhoods, where people have not taken advantage of the American education system and feel that they need to lay blame for their situation on someone other than themselves, whether that means claiming that a certain type of people is to blame or claiming that their skin color is to blame. It is very sad that racism has become a scape goat and tool for manipulation for so many people but I hope it is just a step along America’s path to becoming post-racial although it may take another 50 to 100 years for us to hear the end of it.

I find it hard to believe white women who don't believe in discrimination. There are discriminated just as bad as minorities. Many companies disregard their opinions, wouldn't hire them in available positions, and certain industries would never consider them despite their background and credentials. The military is probably the best industry when it comes to diversity. Slowly but surely minorities are working inching our way to equality, but in every country in the world majority looks at the minorities differently. Doesn't make it right but it's the truth. Except maybe Canada. Not French Canada though haha. I just hate when people clump classism with racism.

This author suffers from some form of white guilt. Its apparent that he has never visited a juvenile court, a violence court, a drug court, listened to rap music, visited a ghetto neighborhood, investigated the drop out rate in the black community, investigated that school funds come from taxes paid within the local community or any number of 'touch points' where he could get a good view of the black experience.

I have watched black leaders, literally rip off their own people. The Jesse Jacksons, Marcus Garveys and Al Sharptons, who have loaded up on the largess that they have taken by 'selling' the hate and racism to every new generation that comes along. I have watched these people live in their own form of self imposed servitude to these people while they get poorer and Jesse and their lot gets richer. And you know what? You tell them they are being ripped off and they call YOU racist.

Good luck on finding your post-racial american in the world of hate that you have built for yourself.

Are you trying to say this doesn't happen in white neighborhoods. Have you watched "The Fighter" do you know that story was based pretty much in an all white neighborhood and they had the exact same issues you want to claim are black issues. Its not black or white, its class issues. Its being down and not knowing how to pull yourself out. It is the inability of others to help pull you out by offering you a job because they don't like your brother, your neighborhood, where went to school, where you live... Its a community & class issue not black, white or asian. Its about having perseverance and confidence in yourself and the ability to go against the norm/peers. Its about having the tools ($, guidance).....

Then clean up your community and get some class. What's the issue? The communities where this nonsense is occurring need to come together and make changes. Quit expecting the government to do it for you. That only escalates the problem. Years ago, people could take care of their own issues. A grocery store in GA used to pay their black workers less than their white workers. 90% of the customers were black. The black customers boycotted the store and shopped elsewhere. You bet the owner raised the black employees wages to get his business back! We don't need government interference to solve all of our problems. We need ingenuity and motivation which is sorely lacking in these communities.

On average, over 70% of one's wealth is transmitted from parent to child, not earned. And having wealth allows you to build more wealth thus perpetuating the cycle. Historically, whites have had greater access to wealth building opportunities and have amassed wealth while blacks and other minorities were excluded by law and practice (i.e. GI bill, redlining, interest rates, jobs, etc.). The PBS special Race: The Power of an Illusion Part 3 does a good job of explaining this. So these disparities couldn't be closed even if all Blacks and Latinos worked 24 hours a day because you need money to make money and they weren't fortunate enough to have grandparents who could by homes, get good interest rates, live in wealthy white neighborhoods, go to prestigious universities, etc to amass wealth and pass it on.

Yes, people like the Kennedys might fit your description of White privelege. They got it, and they want to keep it. But the over whelming majority of Whites do not fit your stereotype. They did not inherit anything, they worked like everyone else.. And I'm not sure Hispanics are a good example for you to point out. So many of them are recent immigrants that if they suffered discrimination at all it would have been at the hands of the elite in their country of origin.. But wait, we can't say that because those elites would be Hispanic themselves.. All bad guys in this racial discussion should be White, otherwise Mr. Wise is out of a job..

White skin privilege applies to all whites of every class and income level. You have it because you are the majority in this nation that was founded on the backs of people of color. If a white, working class convict is considered before a black, working class convict, that is privilege. If white people are what you see 24/7 depicted in media and entertainment, that is also privilege. It's not the money you have; it's sociocultural privilege. Just like men have privilege over women, whites have privilege according to skin color over people of color. Get it?

The crutch that i have noticed being used most often is the internet...my race should be of no concern to you what I do as a human being should be. The fact that I can can spew ignorance and hate anonymously and have hundreds of people support me should be of concern to you. That these ignoble thoughts are in my heart should be of concern to you because this is what I will spread.
But if i am a good person and willing to help the color of my skin shouldn't matter. If I get up everyday and go to work and pay my taxes... or not should be of no concern to you. That I can be thrown into a category because I am a person of color or a woman or 4'2" should be of concern to you because the same boxes that you assume others live in are the same ones built around you.
I am neither saddened by or excessively proud of the things that my people did or are doing because those are their accomplishments or failures not mine.
Whenever I travel and even here at home I have people asking me what am I and the answer is always the same ...
"I'm American " And everywhere I am I always ask myself "Did I do the right thing?"
So now it's your turn to ask yourself by buying into and helping to spread the assumption that all people of color need a crutch ...Did you do the right thing?

I am black and proud and will always be. However, to denied the truth that American is post racial is an illusion. I am an educated black man who have never been to jail, don't smoke or get drunk, father of two children, and held stable jobs. There are times i have been an interview for jobs that i have the credentials to match and i didnt get the job mainly because i am black. Other instances, white females clintched to their hand bags when a black man walks by them especially in the mall; it's something i noticed compared to white men. At time even in restaurants we are treatedd differently (not every where though). In my opinion, i dont think black people is racis. I think thats virtually imposible. I think we are defensive as well as truamatized (lots of frustration building up internally). While there is alot of rap negativity, the media focus too much on, an effort to over shaddow great black acheivement. For ex., the first sucessful art surgry was done by a black doctor, the clock and calender black invention, traffic light black invention, and lots more that was stolen from black and patent by white folks. The are black entreprenurs, the black formers were discriminated against and failed to survived in the agricultural sector. Blacks were denied getting into colleges; still happening today.

Did the hiring manager tell you that you didn't get the job because you are black or are you just assuming that? I've applied for jobs that I had credentials for and didn't get them. Maybe someone with more experience and better credentials than you applied. You have to remember we are in an economic decline, and many highly educated people are without jobs. Of course it only makes sense a more qualified candidate would be hired over you and me. I'm a white college graduate, and I've been denied for many, many, many jobs in recent years.

I'm white. My fiance is not. Who cares? Ignorance and racism, regardless of skin color, is ret**ded, and I think most of us, as Americans, can agree on that.

I'm one of the few white people in my neighborhood and I haven't had any issues. I think ~40% of you commenters should be ashamed of yourselves. Treat people with respect and you'll be respected in turn. I feel like I'm talking to children and disgusted to see come of these comments. First all of the Blacks (yes blacks, you are American i don't go around calling my self European American), that use the excuse that my family tree some how gos back to doing your family wrong, STOP and think, my family like MANY others did not even get to this country untill well after slavery. ITS NOT MY FAULT. Now why is the same hatred not against other blacks, you know theones that were free and slave owners them selves, or the tribes that captured fellow Africans and sold them into slavery to Europeans, or last the ones that freely formed their own regiment for the south in the civil war. Instead hate and blame all whites for the 1% of whites that were slave owners. Yes there is racism because it is kept alive by people like this "writer" and how you seperate your selves with all the black only groups. You have all the chances in the US if not more, scholar ships just for the fact of being a different race, even though like me your American, and employment recruiting because the company has to have at least so many ethnicities, even though like me you are American. I don't look at people based on skin tone, though it is forced down our throughts every day, but worth of life. If you try and improve yourselves every day in some way reguardless of welth and live with some kind of morals you are deserving of respect. If being a gang banger, womanizer, white Supremacist, or just a social misfit you deserve to be looked down on. So ill end like this it not my fault stop grouping all whites in one group.

If you have a roof over your head in this country you are still benefiting from slavery days – many of the big companies still here, employing people made their millions with slaves doing their work back in the 1800s – that is when they amassed their fortunes. Even Brown University has made an apology for slavery, which made them rich. It does not matter 'when you came here.' You are benefiting materially from slavery days and from the genocide of native Americans too. The land you stand on was stolen. Black people built your white house and were denied equal protection under the law until very recently.

No one, not even 1% of whites today used to be slave owners. Ancestors of some whites owned slaves, but the people today obviously did not. I'm not defending slavery, but we need to think about this for a second. I live in Virginia and there are many plantations still standing with slave houses on the property. Many of these slave houses are built better than homes today! Many slaves were educated, and contrary to popular belief, they were rarely physically abused. Why would you abuse and not feed your workers? An underfed abused worker would be practically useless. Also, I believe the primary reason for owning slaves in the first place is the HEAT. In case no one noticed, the south is incredibly HOT. Europeans are not used to that type of weather, Africans ARE. Like I said, I'm not defending it because no one should be able to own another person as property.

Stop reading those history books from Texas. Not everything is a damn Disney movie.

There is plenty of evidence that slaves were routinely abused. Working 16- f&*(&ing hours a day 6 days a week most of your life is abuse.

Also, just because your family came after slavery doesn't mean you don't enjoy the privilege position of a white person in America that was made possible by slavery. We cannot live in a post-racial society when people of color (not just Black) AND whites are constantly spreading ignorance about one another and committing crime. Yes people of color are aware of what racist whites think of them and whites should acknowledge that based on the history of this country and many parts of the world, there is a certain amount of privilege given to those born with white skin. Ones life path is not solely based on race, there are other factors involved specifically socioeconomic status and opportunity, but until both sides are willing to acknowledge the privileges, wrongs done, and hold themselves accountable nothing can change.

Lots of blacks in this country do very well, but we still face discrimination that white people don't. Even in the times of segregation, blacks managed to get an education, start businesses and thrive. There have always been rich, middle class, working class and poor black people just like everyone else. But blacks have a disproportionately large underclass (poor folk) than whites because of the discrimination we face.

Thank God there is more opportunity now, but only because brave people stood up and fought for opportunity. There was a time when an average black person could only hope to be a shoe shine person, a maid. The upper class blacks were born into that and had the option to work at black firms, hospitals, banks, insurance companies because they could afford to go to college. Very few of them could go to a Harvard or Yale or hope to get a job working in a white company. This was not just in the South, either.

Things changed because we FOUGHT for them to change. What hasn't changed, particularly evident from this thread and the blatantly racist, cruel and clueless comments from people with no sense of history I might add is the hearts of whites. You all think you are superior riding on the success of your ancestors and the privileges that have accrued to you. You don't even see it because you're like fish in water. This whole society is set up to benefit you and you can't see it.

Because of that you think racism is something that's made up or something the Klan used to do. If you walked a mile in a black person's shoes, even for a day, your eyes would be opened. I look forward to the ignorant comments that will follow this post.

Racism occurs in ALL ethnicities. Caucasians do not own the market on racism. We are divided or categorized by race. Take a look at some of our government associations or organizations. How can we be post-racial when we have:.
    Congressional Black Caucus,
    Association of Black Lawyers,

Everything is white, white, white. 24/7 it's a white wash where I only see and hear news, entertainment, history, etc. from a white perspective. As a white person, you don't get it because you think you are the norm, just a generic person without a culture to consider. That's what, in your mind, people of color have exotic cultures. "I'm just an American, why can't everyone else be an American." But that negates me. White folks truly don't get it and they refuse to listen and instead prefer to negate us and our experiences as "being too sensitive," or saying "whites don't have a corner on racism." I'm sorry you can't really listen and feel that the existence of racism in this country is somehow a personal attack on your character. "How can we be post-racial, after all, when the typical white family has 20 times the net worth of the typical black family, and 18 times that of the typical Latino family?"

Gee, I dunno. Maybe if I dropped out of school, did drugs, listened to rap music, never learned a skill and had 20 kids with 15 different women that I abandoned, our incomes would be the same?

The problem with Tim Wise, is that he fails to address the result of the choices that people make in their lives as having an effect on their destination. Its very low hanging fruit to say "inequality of income" is tied to color, rather than level of education, experience, life choices and persistence at working towards making a success out of ones self.

Certainly, racism exists– but on both sides. A black man with a college education may have a tougher time getting a job because of his color than his white counterpart, but when a white man doesnt get a job yelling 'racist!' elicits nothing more than a chuckle. I can name MANY MANY more reasons other than skin color that inhibit both job applicants than skin color– such as poor english, inability to comprehend the work, lack of education, history of drug abuse, a felony record and more. If the author wishes to throw reality out of the window and take the least common denominator approach that 'skin color' was the deciding factor, then he is doing nothing more than fueling the "I am a victim" mentality that is pervasive in the black community.

Some people still don't look at that, some just see me as that black girl, o yea and no kids. I am not saying that anybody owes me anything, I just want respect and not look at just other minority. That goes for all races.

Thats the thing. People DO respect you. Even white people! The problem is, most of the time, the first thing that goes wrong, the word 'Racist!' comes flying out... Believe it or not, white people cheat white people sometimes too. White people work hard and get no respect. White people get no raises, crummy jobs and stepped on. But that doesnt make them whine about inequality every 10 seconds when things dont go their way. (I am not saying that you do, but its the mindset to quickly turn to the white guy holding me back is ludicrous and so is the author of this article.)

Of course there are many reasons besides race bias alone for racial disparities, but a great many of those facially non-racial factors are racial in nature. White perceptions of blacks are profoundly negative and they bring those perceptions to bear and then insist they're being objective. And what does rap music have to do with anything? Rap music has been adopted in virtually every country as music of protest. Is it really so much worse than loud heavy metal? No.

Racism has 2 sides and the author chooses to villainize white people without even attempting to look at the mountain of black racism that exists in this country. You write this pile of garbage, whining about only white racism "much of it exaggerated and I'm sure an outright lie or distortion" and then you wonder why you and people like you can't get anywhere. When was the last time Black people held hundreds of White people as slaves on their plantations?
When was the last time Black people created a Jim Crow society, and forced White people to use 'white only' bathrooms and go to 'white only' schools with no funding, all while demanding that White people pay the same taxes as Black people?
When was the last time Black people formed a government in which the vast majority of representatives were Black, and then when five or ten whites finally made it in, said 'see we are equal now."
When was the last time Black people burned down a White town and hung White men from trees?
When was the last time cops stopped you, mister White man, while driving, even though you were not doing anything illegal?
When was the last time you went shopping and had some Black security guard follow you all around the store, even though you had done nothing illegal?
When was the last time a Black landlord, or a Black-owned bank denied you housing or a loan because you were White, even though everything about you was middle class and able?
When was the last time a Black person told you to quit whining when you tried to talk about the painful parts of your people's history?
When was the last time you went to a film made by an all Black cast, and a Black director, in which all the charaters were Black except one or two totally stupid, or totally violent and criminal White people? When was the last time you realized that most films were that way, and that the most of the images in the world, on T.V., in the movies, in history books were of White people portrayed as ugly, ignorant, criminals? (By Black people.)

America has a history of racism. Even when there are good White people, there are still systems in place that oppress Black people. There are structural issues in this culture that oppress Black people, and there are perceptions – false, ignorant and hateful, created a hundred years ago, that Black people still suffer under today. Go learn something new, and stop perpetuating hatred, PLEASE.

i would just like to point out that there's no such thing as reverse racism, because "reverse racism" would mean there was no racism at all. Racism is defined as "the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, esp. so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races." It's not specifically a white-against-black term.

Also, while there are are black people who commit crimes, such as the ones who committed crimes against Phillygirl, that doesn't mean all do and therefore this article is rendered invalid. There is a lot of truth in this article, though I don't believe the object of it is, as some people are implying, to point fingers or say that white people don't work for the things they have. Essentially, all the article is saying is that we still live in a society charged by racism or, at the very least, racial prejudice. Which, in effect, is being proved by all the backlash and generalizations about minorities in the comments.

    CNN,

Pray tell: why is this opinion piece in the news section?

There's nothing wrong with opinion pieces. The American media has a long history of offering opinion pieces, often called "editorials." But the American media also has a long tradition of separating those opinion pieces from the "factual" news. CNN's site has a separate area for opinion pieces.

It is poor journalism to mix the two like this. This piece, while it is a perfectly good pieces and certainly worth publishing, should be in the Opinion section and not comingled with the news.

There are places that are certainly still clinging onto racism, and there's no pretense that can pretend this isn't the case; however, racism at large has been reduced to a debate of privilege due to minority and majority situations; as a white male male in Chicago that goes to a very well integrated school, I'll tell you that racism exists (nothing like the mid-twentieth century though!), because how can it not? People are so different, externally and internally, that they are not the same; inherently they're equal, but not the same. Furthermore, we seem to forget that racism is something encouraged; if it wasn't, there would be no such thing as affirmative action and quotas. What's more, society as a whole has formed the models of racism, which is largely demonstrated by the fact that pretty much are racist jokes are stereotypes. That applies to all races.
Experience shows where the world is, and to say that America is a virulent racist society may be by some numbers, but at large we have become so liberal that we don't give a care to race anymore; if a black guy is lazy, it's called racism to point it out, but if a white guy is lazy, it's just called scorn. These lines are often blurred by our innate cynicism, leading to articles like this.

Honestly, I knew there would be a huge white backlash toward this article regarding reverse racism and white racism and a plethora of other things. But to be honest, unless you're an educated or highly perceptive individual, you really won't understand what it's like to be black in America unless, you're black. That is not to say its some harrowing experience where I am denied basic opportunities on a daily basis and openly discriminated against so frequently. Nevertheless, Racism is alive and well, for both blacks and whites. But it's a a lot different when you're considered the minority. Racial stereotypes are not only fed to the population through the media, but we as African-Americans feed into these racial stereotypes openly and ignorantly. The replies from these white people here just label us as crime-filled heathens. This is not the case for many of us. However, the majority of white people won't stop being so ignorant and biased until the majority of African-Americans give other races an excuse not to label us in such a way. When that happens, the rest of us can get rid of the negative connotations associated with our race. If we change our culture and how we present and represent ourselves, we will see a change. Until that time, the race problem here in American will stay the same.

I do agree that certain behaviors be certain black people feeds racism, but I question how much it will abate as those behaviors lessen. I am reminded of so many cases of successful blacks being attacked because their prosperity offended someone else' idea of blacks not staying in "their place." Much of the white hostility to affirmative action has this ring to it, because there is no such hostility towards legacy admissions, favorable treatment of the wealthy by law enforcement or the use of family connections to advance – things that overwhelmingly favor whites have nothing to do with merit. Still, I do expect much of the racial animosity evidenced in these comments to abate as older bigots die off.

Just read many of the posts here.. You ask me to explain how it is to be White, but if you are not White you can never know. I am not rich, but many here talk as if all Whites are rich.. I have never belonged to any racist organization, but many here steryotype as if all Whites are racist, I have never inherited anything, never benefitted from Affirmative Action, but I have been assaulted for just passing through neighborhoods that were not White, I had no Whites only scholarships to apply for when I went to college. etc, etc.. I could go on and on, but as many people of color here have already said, why do I need to explain myself?? You feel that you have the right to ask me such a question, but would most likely be quit upset if asked it of you or a person of color. Guess If I had to boil it down to a simple answer about what upsets me I would say "double standard."

It was my whiteness that got me the brick laborer job after high school, then into the Army, and then because I was so wonderfully white, I was allowed to rack up student loans for college (before the big GI Bill of today). I am truly ashamed of myself for letting my whiteness provide me this vast fortune that I clearly didn't earn, nor deserve, and most certainly gained at the expense of non-whites. Tim thank you for bringing up these hard realities. It is not somehow "racist against whites" to state the truth: that there are huge gaps in this country based on race. White privilege is real, whether we want to accept it or not. It's only when we as a society realize that these problems exist that we can work on getting rid of them. For the record, I am white, a former teacher in an urban school with mostly Latino and African American students, and my students are some of the most ambitious, hard working, and smart people I know. I hope that one day they are running the world instead of those who are ignorant enough to believe that our country is no longer racist.

Car was scratched with words "white B****", home burglaized, gang paint on the side of the house, rocks thrown at windows and smashed, all within the first year of living here. The police were called numerous times and just said "sorry we can't do anything for you" and 'conveniently' lost the photos of the damage. When we got upset they threatened to take US in for being so visibly upset. Unbelievable. I contacted numerous news agencies and papers to highlight the issue of reverse racism and never ever got a call back from one single place. Reverse racism is alive & well. I work more than full time in West Philly and keep to myself for my own safety. The facts are the facts. Its a shame so many other stories are just not told to hold a fair discussion about all this.

Tim Wise is hated because he is white and willing to talk about the issues revolving around racism.....The argument against Wise that blacks and Asians are racist against whites being a real race issue is laughable, in no way does Wise deny racism against whites but he does provide historical explanation to what lead to whites experience racism. It does not seem like Wise is denying racism rather he is presenting the fact that racism is not a civil rights issue of our parents or grandparents generation, rather it is still a constant battle today.

If some black dude hates you, unless you're defenseless somewhere his racism won't matter to you. Chances are you live a life where you rarely if ever even have to come into contact with black people. That "reverse racism" is a bunch of BS to deflect off of your apparent guilt. If you're not a racist, why do you feel guilty? If you haven't done anything you shouldn't feel guilty. Maybe you feel guilty because you listen to the racist commentary of your friends, laugh at racist jokes and just go along to get along. If so, you're part of the problem.
