(CNN)– U.S. minorities now represent more than half of America's population under the age of 1, the Census Bureau said, a historic demographic milestone with profound political, economic and social implications.
The bureau - defining a minority as anyone who is not "single race white" and "not Hispanic" - released estimates on Thursday showing that 50.4% of children younger than 1 were minorities as of July 1, 2011, up from 49.5% from the 2010 Census taken in April 2010.
"2011 is the first time the population of infants under age 1 is majority minority," said Robert Bernstein, a Census Bureau spokesman.
The latest statistics - which also count the national population younger than 5 as 49.7% minority in 2011, an increase from 49% in 2010 - portend a future of a more racially diverse America, with new and growing populations playing more important roles politically and economically in years to come, analysts say.
Like other analysts, Kenneth M. Johnson, senior demographer at the Carsey Institute and professor of sociology at the University of New Hampshire, isn't surprised at the trend.
"We've known it was going to come, but the question was what year the "crossover point" would happen, he said.
"Little children are in the vanguard of all this change coming to America." he said.
Johnson sees the trend as an opportunity for more Americans to embrace diversity. More children are going to be exposed to a more diverse group of classmates, and that will affect attitudes and outlook.
The changes are going to be felt first in hospitals, as well as schools, where an increasingly diverse child population has to be absorbed. Hospitals would need interpreters and translators, for example, Johnson said. English as a second language would be an educational priority.
While many regions such as Atlanta have a diverse population, other regions lack racial and ethnic variety and will have to deal with a new kind of population, he said. In declining rural counties, he said, an influx of groups like Hispanics would serve to renew communities and changes would ensue.
"For a country that's aging, we need young workers, and the growth of the minority population will contribute to the size of the young adult workforce," he said. "This is breathing new life into the United States."
Jeff Passell, senior demographer at the Pew Hispanic Center, called the Census numbers "a cumulative effect of 35 to 40 years of immigration" bringing large numbers of Latinos, Asians and other immigrants into the United States.
He said the Hispanic population in particular is very young, much more concentrated in child-bearing years, and has a higher fertility rate than the white, non-Hispanic population. Lately, he says, there are a lot more births among native Hispanics in the United States than new Hispanic immigrants, a "cumulative effect" of immigration.
If the trend continues, Passell says several decades from now, possibly in the late 2030s or early 2040s, the U.S. population will become less than 50% non-Hispanic white.
"This is a trend that we can reasonably expect to continue. The factors that determine this have been set into motion, and in demography things tend to change gradually," he said.
There were 114 million minorities in 2011, or 36.6% of the U.S. population, a bump of half a percentage point from 2010. The latest figures count Hispanics as the most populous and fastest growing minority group.
They numbered 52 million in 2011, and their population grew by 3.1% since 2010. The U.S. Hispanic population grew from 16.3% in 2010 to 16.7% in 2011.
"California had the largest Hispanic population of any state on July 1, 2011 (14.4 million), as well as the largest numeric increase within the Hispanic population since April 1, 2010, (346,000)," the Census said.
"New Mexico had the highest percentage of Hispanics at 46.7%. Los Angeles had the largest Hispanic population of any county (4.8 million) in 2011 and the largest numeric increase since 2010 (73,000). Starr County - on the Mexican border in Texas - had the highest share of Hispanics (95.6 percent)."
Asians numbered 18.2 million nationally in 2011, making them the second fastest-growing minority group - up by 3% since 2010. Figures show that California had the largest Asian population of any state at 5.8 million and the largest increase since 2010 at 131,000.
"Hawaii is our nation's only majority-Asian state, with people of this group comprising 57.1% of the total population. Los Angeles had the largest Asian population of any county (1.6 million) in 2011, and also the largest numeric increase (16,000) since 2010. At 61.2%, Honolulu had the highest percentage of Asians in the nation," the Census said.
African-Americans are the second largest minority group in the United States at 43.9 million in 2011, an increase of 1.6% from 2010. New York has the largest black population of any state with 3.7 million and Texas has the largest increase from 2010 of 84,000. Cook County, Illinois, which includes Chicago, has the largest black population of any county at 1.3 million. Fulton County, Georgia, which includes Atlanta, has the largest increase since 2010 at 13,000.
The District of Columbia has the highest percentage of blacks at 52.2%. Mississippi has the second-largest at 38%.
America's native population - labeled "American Indian and Alaska Native population" by the Census - was about 6.3 million in 2011, up 2.1% from 2010. California had the largest such population at 1,050,000 and the largest increase at 23,000. Alaska had the highest share at 19%. Los Angeles had the largest such population of any county, with 231,000, and the largest increase, 9,000 since 2010.
The population classified as "Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander" was 1.4 million in 2011, up 2.9% since 2010. Hawaii had the largest such population of any state at 359,000 and the highest percentage at 26.1. California had the largest increase since 2010 at 9,000. Honolulu has the largest population of any county at 235,000. Los Angeles County had the largest increase since 2011 at 2,700.
Of single race non-Hispanic whites, California had the largest population at 15 million. Texas had the largest increase since 2010 at 80,000. Maine had the highest percentage of the non-Hispanic white alone population, 94.3 percent.
Four states and the District of Columbia have predominantly minority populations, Hawaii, at 77%, the District of Columbia at 64.7%, California, at 60.3%, New Mexico, at 59.8%, and Texas, at 55.2%. Minorities comprised the majority population in 11% of the nation's 3,143 counties.
Michael White, professor of sociology at Brown University, said the rise of minorities fits into a longer-term evolution of the U.S. population, a mosaic that has been adapting to ethnic change since the first Census was recorded in 1790. There have been many groups represented over time, from enslaved and indigenous peoples, those of European stock, and now to a population reflecting the wider world - truly a "melting pot," he said.
White says it's hard to say how the changes will affect politics and that one can't assume that ethnic patterns will determine voting patterns. Local economic issues, for example, will evolve differently in different states and cities, and there are economic benefits of having a younger population, he said.
"The political dimensions will play out differently," he said. And by the time the babies are old enough to cast ballots, "the United States will be a different place when they are walking into a voting booth."
William Frey, Brookings Institution demographer, sees political challenges for new immigrants and an economy benefiting from their presence. Many Hispanics and Asians are too young to vote or can't cast ballots because they haven't become citizens.
"It's going to take perhaps awhile before the younger people get more engaged in politics. They do have an impact in some places, like swing states, such as Nevada, Colorado and Florida. They can make a difference," he said.
He, too, says that newcomers to the United States bring an energy that invigorates the economic system and an older society.
"I think we're going to just see that the younger part of the population will have a different vibe," he said. "They are sort of needed to help our youthful image and to add to that vitality. They will bring a dimension and element we sorely need."

"Accept," Kyle? As an Asian born and raised in America, I'm telling you that white people do just the same. I go to a white-majority university and most of my friends are Asian, Indian, and Middle Eastern. White people tend to stick to each other just as much as minorities who came straight from foreign lands do. It's quite natural for anyone who hasn't been exposed to other races. Ongoing racism against minorities in schools can be found all over the country - we even have a well-known tumblr website exposing hateful tweets from racist and xenophobic white students.

My comment, to Kyle by the way, is addressing the fact that he is completely dismissing how white people "socialize mostly with persons of their own ethnic group" just the same. I repeat, same. Look it up in the dictionary. I grew up and live in a white neighborhood. I do get distanced from my neighbors, not all, but I still do. You can't blame it on the minorities. People of ALL colors aggregate with one of their own "race" and I get that. Oh, and thanks for grouping up Asians, Indians, and Middle Easterners as browns.
I'm white not rich and not a republican and especially not a democrat. Not a republican cause rich folks are greedy that's simply how they got there, not a democrat cause I know the welfare program gets abused a lot.
First of all welfare is not temporary, when food stamps and free medical, dental and vision(for kids) are used for over 16 years I don't consider that a temporary program. And it causes some folks I know to have more kids. Why not kids don't cost much with welfare. Ever wonder why hispanics have so many kids. (We aren't working the farms anymore people) having kids should be a burden these days and is to most people including lots of hispanics but there a large group of them who think otherwise.
Look I married into a family like this my wife wasn't raised on handouts but her sister married a guy who's large family LOVES them. They think everybody does, just act divorce, and have lots of kids (they have 6 started welfare on the first child she's now 17 they are still receiving handouts). They also split them up for taxes since you know they are "divorced" Get this he also has a green card but makes over 60k a year as a truck driver. And look when I mean the whole family is on it I mean his 12 brothers and 10 sisters as well as all their cousins. Some born here but most in Mexico by the border.
My wife's parents came from Mexico and never relied on government handouts.
I never knew what food stamps were, and I was raised poor. Didn't have shoes until I started school. Before I met my wife's sister family I thought they were like postal stamps or something and a person only got maybe a loaf of bread free. Man.... was I wrong.
My wife's sister has 10 horses, a boat, and 3 vehicles but a house they don't take care of. So they look kind of poor however they can afford that overly priced western wear. Pair of boots can run up to 300 bucks! Their 17 year old daughter just got her first paycheck yesterday, her mom rushed her to the store and spent it all on expensive clothes! 500 dollars all on clothes yeah that's poor...give me a break.
Look this has gone beyond a temporary situation. These people have hatred for white folks and believe we should pay for them to live. Plain and simple I would say 6 out of 10 hispanics live by this way of life and thinking.
And I really don't blame them much I mean white folks especially in small towns can be really racist. They have even giving me dirty looks when with my wife and have talked crap behind us plenty of times, some even think we are on welfare...lol.
Its took YEARS for my sister-in-laws family and extended to finally believe that I just work hard and don't get anything from my white man money tree and my hispanic wife and I are still poor but we make it look good thanks to research, home improvements, and sweat (at work and at HOME) But no way would we ever make the working class pay for our lives. And most of these abusers work and say "well I paid into it so I should use it"....ok but where's the handout for my wife and I. I think its really hard for most white folks to believe that minorities aren't abusing the system when you see the life styles of them. I know hate me... God I have seen so many of them abuse it I don't want to believe it but there is so many so many so so so many! I mean my sister-in-laws husband has 50 people he's related to in this small town and thats just this one guy in the small town of 2,000 people. My closet relative lives 2 hours away! Sorry, but I agree with Kyle. If minorities do and will become the majority, unless they become better educated and able to contribute back we are doomed. I am an educator in Florida where the schools have become filled with minority studentsd unwilling to learn. The standards are set so low due to the influx of minorities that I often wonder how the system has even survived this long. Just a final message: Do not send your children to Florida public schools if you are white. Your kids do not stand a chance of progressing in this system that is more of a juvenile detention than a learning medium.

If you look up the history of Planned Parenthood you will see that its former name was once the American Eugenics Societ. More to the point, the very premise of this article is based on a faulty relationship between ethnicity and race. In the 2010 census the majority of Hispanics identified themselves as white, and this is the real truth. Hispanic / Latino is an ethnicity comprised of many races. Therefore, an increase in the Hispanic population actually corresponds to an increase in white babies being born in the united states. This is a non story, a form a racial baiting that will get us nowhere.
CNN seems to like to focus on these stories because they provoke a response. Racism is a problem, however, socioeconomic status needs to be addressed. The difference between the rich and the rest of us. Being poor stacks the deck against every race and ethnicity.
This is no time for insults. America is growing more diverse every day. There is room and an opportunity for all. Please stop thinking everyone is looking for a handout. Fact of the matter is, young children don't ask to be born into poverty or into some of the living environments they have to endure. So yes, their parent may need gov't assistance for a while. Let's just pray that the system allows for a help then release program when parents are able to take care of the kids with a job of their own. Whereas here, even if you are a minority who grew up "white" in the "white" suburbs and went straight from college-prep school to the Ivy Leagues, you still have a hella hard time getting "the white man's" job the minute you set foot in the interview where they act like they expected this college-educated person to be white. In the countries a lot of their respective counterparts came FROM they don't have those problems. In Cuba, all the scientists and engineers and mathematicians are brown-skinned Cubans, period. So when you people criticize "the countries they came from" I immediately think of CUBA and think, "well they will be BETTER OFF trying to get jobs 'back home' wherever that is than winding up on welfare and on the streets here in Amerikkka."
Leo Jones ........... I completely AGREE with you. We lived in a predomiantly white neighborhood growing up and never had any problems with our neighbors. It was actually a beautiful and friendly place to grow up. Then about 17 years into our stay, blacks started moving in until eventually after about 3 years we were the minority. It was amazing how our once quiet little neighborhood turned into a very undesirable place to live, and eventually all the white people moved. We HAD to move because we were being sent nasty letters and eventually feared for our safety.
People can tout whatever message they want; when you live through something like that, it changes you forever.
It's too bad they say if there is less white people, why?, because the world will not have so many good looking people.

People should be worried about the funding for their WIC, food stamps, Medicaid, and other "government - aka taxpayer provided" assistance. With fewer white babies being born the labor force will dwindle even more. There will be more people expecting taxpayers to support them and fewer taxpayers aka employed people to fork over the money. Can't wait to see how baby mamas continue to reproduce when Medicaid runs dry since I don't think these baby machines know who the fathers are and even if they did, baby daddys have been on welfare with their mamas all their little lives.

Actually, St.Augustine (of Hippo) was from Northern Africa, and the Spanish colonized parts of North America while Anglos colonized and won what is now the U.S.

As far as Iam concerned this news is irrelevant ! it should not even be in the news cause we shouldn't care about what are the colours of people, even less of new born. What does it matter ? a human being is a human being his colour is irrelevant. Now the cultural background, social or economical class, beliefs and knowledges... that is more relevant !
Always wondered, what if inter racial generations could be a solution to the more perfect union in America? You will trace your background and find out though you think you are caucascian, but there was a dark grandma, maybe few lines back an asian blood etc. etc..., and then.. only then you will understand that you CANT renounce anybody anymore than you can renounce your own flesh and blood, your own parents, friends, neighbors, wife and children.

I am an educated black guy and healthy.I have 4 kids(two of them grown) by two black women.I am not dating anybody now but for years I have craved having a baby by a single or married white woman.I would even go to any country in the world to do it.It will make me very happy to have have a baby by a white woman.

Having children in an overpopulated world is just ignorance. Even most animals stop breeding when resources become scarce or their populations increase drastically, with the exception of some species. It's amusing how the people with limited finances are the ones who have the most children and then wonder why they have no money. I'm assuming they are expecting their children to eventually take care of them. But that won't happen if they just end up in the same impoverished life. It's not the race that matters as much as the way they are raised and the culture they come from. If you raise your children to take care of themselves and be a responsible citizen, then that is great and you are doing society a favor. But as long as they remain minorities and are treated as such, they will always expect government hand outs and assume they should be taken care of because they are "disadvantaged." We need to stop the welfare generation.

I agree that we are all Americans. To overcome that diversity, we need to eliminate the NAACP and organizations of the like so tthat we are all NAAAP (National Association for the Advancement of American People). Why are we overlooking the American population/needs/problems and out there fixing the "world" problems first. What this appears to be a picture of is simple demographics. Whites in this country are wealthier and on average, anecdotally less religious than minorities in this country. Poorer and more religious people on average have more children than richer and less religious people. I am not concerned as long as all people seek freedom and the opportunity for prosperity for themselves and their fellow man, and not seek to exclude others based on prejudice, jealousy, or any other manifestation of pride or contempt.

As a married white male with no kids, having children right now is simply irresponsible. The economy is in shambles,our government is corrupt, and I've still got bills to pay off. I suppose some people just pop them out instead of worrying about being responsible though. Hell, if you can't take care of them, the government will, right?

I have to disagree with you on that. I am a white women who is about as nonracist as you can get. I am dating someone ouf of my race and have always tried not to judge on the basis of race. I am been treated horribly by black women simply because I was white. I did not judge all black people on that. I have also been treated wonderfully by other black people. There are just as many racist in other races as there are in the white race. To make a blanket statement like you did is wrong and frankly, racist.

I have hearded this news from the French TV today , and finally it doesn't really suprised me ... What is very strange for a French citizen , is that in USA , you can have ethnical census . Here it isn't allowed to count people by the color of their skin or by the " ethnical " groups ....(It's considered as racism... I wish we could have Census like yours...).
But France is like a " little" America (with 20 years of late )... Here "our " Hispanics are people from North Africa and SubSaharian Africa ...
Our welfare system is very generous and very very attractive.. so in the Paris suburb and (some big cities) I think that now , white people are minority .

Yes I think the American system actually is better on this point. The French system is about egalite/fraternite, but it's very hard to have those things if you don't get a good education or good job. I think your system makes it much harder to categorize and collect data on ethnic and economic statistics. I don't think our system is divisive make everything a lot more complicated though because we can't sweep problems "under the rug".
The reason "minority" babies are increasing is because white women aren't having babies and the ones that do, are having babies by "minorities".
You would make a great politician seeing how you can make up statistics to whatever fits your view. I am worried that you really believe what you say.

Social Security funds the ridiculous disability claims ("I can't work because I get headaches" or " I can't work because I get depressed") are draining the funds. Welfare recipients are not a "small piece of the pie" either. Our tax dollars fund so many programs for people who are lazy and expect to get a free ride – rent, utility, medicaid and cable bills, cell phones, day care, transportation vouchers... the list goes on. Illegals are learning how to play the game too.

Actually SS disability scamming is rampant. I personally know a Hispanic LEGAL...that does not work, flys back to Texas 3x a year for recertification as disabled who gets $600 a month for a bad back. A week ago, I watched him carry 2 cases of bottled water into the house....probably 60-70lbs? and didnt miss a beat. He has been on SS disability about 10 years now. Where as I'm white. I have been working since the age of 12 and currently work 50 hrs a week and have for the last 40 years and will be lucky to retire at 62. Of course working I make 5x what he brings home from SS and I know I could not live on $600 a month.
All he and his buddies want to do is sit around, eat tortillias and watch Spanish TV all day. Not my kinda life. I think more of myself than that and have a higher degree of honor than to be a thief.
If you are an American then you must have medical insurance for all your medical care. You must have money for your rent, food, utilities etc. However, if you are an illegal you just walk into the nearest hospital and they must treat you. Welfare office will help you apply for welfare. Then those charges are passed on to the Americans. One hospital had to close in Texas because of the Mexicans using it for free medical. What a country. Mexicans think Americans are stupid because of the lax laws here and you know what I have to agree.
I am Hispanic, and I live in California. I am disgusted to see so many people abuse the system. We only had two children because we knew that was all we could afford. While the Mexicans, have five or more, and neglect their kids. They don't care about them. The majority live in subsidized housing and drive around in Escalades. Disgusting! There are a lot of racist white people making comments about how minorities want a handout and want to live off the government for free. This is the farthest from the truth. Most minorities work and pay taxes like white people. If anyone is living off the government, it is the rich corporations that pay little or no taxes, but yet send jobs oversees. I think the comments show that America has a long way to go in terms of race relations and overcoming racism. The white population is declining because a lot of white people (especially white women) are marrying outside their race. Immigration has also influenced the number of minorites.

I just tried to visit a local Children and Families State Department to get help for my disabled daughter. We could not even locate a place to sit. . The room was over flowing with Spanish speaking people who had brought the entire family to get services paid for by the American Tax Payer. If they are not here legally they can't have a social security number and do not pay any tax. But once they can have a baby with in the USA border that qualifies them for free services. Housing, food stamps, medical and etc. If the fact that I resent having to leave without being seen then so be it. My family has fought and died for this nation and I resent people who come here without an invitation. Why don't you if you are American? Or are you one of those hiring illegals?

I think the decline in white births is down to a working mentality in most families, where the family only bears as many children as the parents can provide for. There is certainly a mentality among many minorities that the state owes them something and that babies provide leverage in the system.

Thirty six years ago after getting married immediately we decided one child because the thought of raising that child; food, shelter, schooling, clothing and savings is a huge responsibilities. Now still working, paying my regular estimate to Uncle Sam quarterly to help support those people staying at home, watching TV, eating with their hearts content, getting fat, multiplying babies like flies and blamed the government of their unfortunate life. If our politicians would base citizenship on whether a child has a parent's citizenship, we would not be in this mess. The number of illegitimate hispanic children, who do receive benefits is ridiculous. In addition to food stamps, welfare, and the annual cost to educate anchor babies and illegal children, we're talking about billions of dollars. I'm in California and we definitely are getting the bottom of the barrel when it comes to immigrants. Too bad.
