(CNN)– U.S. minorities now represent more than half of America's population under the age of 1, the Census Bureau said, a historic demographic milestone with profound political, economic and social implications.
The bureau - defining a minority as anyone who is not "single race white" and "not Hispanic" - released estimates on Thursday showing that 50.4% of children younger than 1 were minorities as of July 1, 2011, up from 49.5% from the 2010 Census taken in April 2010.
"2011 is the first time the population of infants under age 1 is majority minority," said Robert Bernstein, a Census Bureau spokesman.
The latest statistics - which also count the national population younger than 5 as 49.7% minority in 2011, an increase from 49% in 2010 - portend a future of a more racially diverse America, with new and growing populations playing more important roles politically and economically in years to come, analysts say.
Like other analysts, Kenneth M. Johnson, senior demographer at the Carsey Institute and professor of sociology at the University of New Hampshire, isn't surprised at the trend.
"We've known it was going to come, but the question was what year the "crossover point" would happen, he said.
"Little children are in the vanguard of all this change coming to America." he said.
Johnson sees the trend as an opportunity for more Americans to embrace diversity. More children are going to be exposed to a more diverse group of classmates, and that will affect attitudes and outlook.
The changes are going to be felt first in hospitals, as well as schools, where an increasingly diverse child population has to be absorbed. Hospitals would need interpreters and translators, for example, Johnson said. English as a second language would be an educational priority.
While many regions such as Atlanta have a diverse population, other regions lack racial and ethnic variety and will have to deal with a new kind of population, he said. In declining rural counties, he said, an influx of groups like Hispanics would serve to renew communities and changes would ensue.
"For a country that's aging, we need young workers, and the growth of the minority population will contribute to the size of the young adult workforce," he said. "This is breathing new life into the United States."
Jeff Passell, senior demographer at the Pew Hispanic Center, called the Census numbers "a cumulative effect of 35 to 40 years of immigration" bringing large numbers of Latinos, Asians and other immigrants into the United States.
He said the Hispanic population in particular is very young, much more concentrated in child-bearing years, and has a higher fertility rate than the white, non-Hispanic population. Lately, he says, there are a lot more births among native Hispanics in the United States than new Hispanic immigrants, a "cumulative effect" of immigration.
If the trend continues, Passell says several decades from now, possibly in the late 2030s or early 2040s, the U.S. population will become less than 50% non-Hispanic white.
"This is a trend that we can reasonably expect to continue. The factors that determine this have been set into motion, and in demography things tend to change gradually," he said.
There were 114 million minorities in 2011, or 36.6% of the U.S. population, a bump of half a percentage point from 2010. The latest figures count Hispanics as the most populous and fastest growing minority group.
They numbered 52 million in 2011, and their population grew by 3.1% since 2010. The U.S. Hispanic population grew from 16.3% in 2010 to 16.7% in 2011.
"California had the largest Hispanic population of any state on July 1, 2011 (14.4 million), as well as the largest numeric increase within the Hispanic population since April 1, 2010, (346,000)," the Census said.
"New Mexico had the highest percentage of Hispanics at 46.7%. Los Angeles had the largest Hispanic population of any county (4.8 million) in 2011 and the largest numeric increase since 2010 (73,000). Starr County - on the Mexican border in Texas - had the highest share of Hispanics (95.6 percent)."
Asians numbered 18.2 million nationally in 2011, making them the second fastest-growing minority group - up by 3% since 2010. Figures show that California had the largest Asian population of any state at 5.8 million and the largest increase since 2010 at 131,000.
"Hawaii is our nation's only majority-Asian state, with people of this group comprising 57.1% of the total population. Los Angeles had the largest Asian population of any county (1.6 million) in 2011, and also the largest numeric increase (16,000) since 2010. At 61.2%, Honolulu had the highest percentage of Asians in the nation," the Census said.
African-Americans are the second largest minority group in the United States at 43.9 million in 2011, an increase of 1.6% from 2010. New York has the largest black population of any state with 3.7 million and Texas has the largest increase from 2010 of 84,000. Cook County, Illinois, which includes Chicago, has the largest black population of any county at 1.3 million. Fulton County, Georgia, which includes Atlanta, has the largest increase since 2010 at 13,000.
The District of Columbia has the highest percentage of blacks at 52.2%. Mississippi has the second-largest at 38%.
America's native population - labeled "American Indian and Alaska Native population" by the Census - was about 6.3 million in 2011, up 2.1% from 2010. California had the largest such population at 1,050,000 and the largest increase at 23,000. Alaska had the highest share at 19%. Los Angeles had the largest such population of any county, with 231,000, and the largest increase, 9,000 since 2010.
The population classified as "Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander" was 1.4 million in 2011, up 2.9% since 2010. Hawaii had the largest such population of any state at 359,000 and the highest percentage at 26.1. California had the largest increase since 2010 at 9,000. Honolulu has the largest population of any county at 235,000. Los Angeles County had the largest increase since 2011 at 2,700.
Of single race non-Hispanic whites, California had the largest population at 15 million. Texas had the largest increase since 2010 at 80,000. Maine had the highest percentage of the non-Hispanic white alone population, 94.3 percent.
Four states and the District of Columbia have predominantly minority populations, Hawaii, at 77%, the District of Columbia at 64.7%, California, at 60.3%, New Mexico, at 59.8%, and Texas, at 55.2%. Minorities comprised the majority population in 11% of the nation's 3,143 counties.
Michael White, professor of sociology at Brown University, said the rise of minorities fits into a longer-term evolution of the U.S. population, a mosaic that has been adapting to ethnic change since the first Census was recorded in 1790. There have been many groups represented over time, from enslaved and indigenous peoples, those of European stock, and now to a population reflecting the wider world - truly a "melting pot," he said.
White says it's hard to say how the changes will affect politics and that one can't assume that ethnic patterns will determine voting patterns. Local economic issues, for example, will evolve differently in different states and cities, and there are economic benefits of having a younger population, he said.
"The political dimensions will play out differently," he said. And by the time the babies are old enough to cast ballots, "the United States will be a different place when they are walking into a voting booth."
William Frey, Brookings Institution demographer, sees political challenges for new immigrants and an economy benefiting from their presence. Many Hispanics and Asians are too young to vote or can't cast ballots because they haven't become citizens.
"It's going to take perhaps awhile before the younger people get more engaged in politics. They do have an impact in some places, like swing states, such as Nevada, Colorado and Florida. They can make a difference," he said.
He, too, says that newcomers to the United States bring an energy that invigorates the economic system and an older society.
"I think we're going to just see that the younger part of the population will have a different vibe," he said. "They are sort of needed to help our youthful image and to add to that vitality. They will bring a dimension and element we sorely need."

When you look at national data, while the percentages on welfare appear similar (black and white), when you account for a groups percentage of the total population, minorities consume far more of the social services provided.....

The idea that this white minority was overdue, and its their turn for slavery is just unbelievable to me. Not to play down the horrible events that took place over the last 400 or so years prior to the 60's, but black people here in America have not and currently are not the only people to have been enslaved. African's were taken from Africa, and in some cases sold by their own tribes to the then voyagers to America before it even became America. Slaves built our nation. Its very very sad, but true. Asians were taken as slaves as well as the Irish and Italians. Before America, Europeans uses slaves, Africa, Asia, Middle easterners, Russia... everyone had slaves, some still have slaves. My point is simply that people shouldn't spend so much useless energy trying to seek revenge for others ignorant choices. My family was killed during WWII, I dont think all Germans should now be burned and lynched just because new statistics say there are less of them in the world then us. In sheer numbers, the largest number of people receiving public assistance, are Caucasian. Race technically does not exist, it is merely a human construct. Color of skin is only a biological reaction to ultraviolet radiation that was developed over hundreds of thousands of years of human migration.

For 400 years opportunities for education were denied to minorities...it's only a few decades ago these laws were changed...minorities are still denied opportunities in the workplace and are less likely to afford early childhood education for their children...the playing field has NEVER been even...if you put 2 kids in the exact same conditions...what would the results be?

8 of the 12 kids on my son's baseball team have parents where one parent is Euro/white and the other is of another ethnicity/race (my kids included) including Asian, Hispanic, Indian or Black. We live in a pretty mixed, mostly working class/lower middle class area (not a heck of a lot of welfare, mostly two parents working). So how does this census count those kids? This is going to be more the norm going forward. The fact is we are mixing it up at all levels of society. Honestly I think that is a good thing.

This article is right on. Went to Dallas the other day and found, as a white woman, that everyone was a different color than me. It was quite a culture shock! I thought, this is how it feels to be the minority. I felt a litle insecure. Oh well. Adjust and adapt, I guess.

I'd rather the Asians outpopulate the Hispanics. While I like both, the Asians bring skill sets other than lawn mowing and food. They contribute far more in the way of technology and medicine, which is what this country so desperately needs.

The reporter incompetently does not identify the source of this information, and likely does not interpret the statistics correctly, either. Most likely, the source is the Census's American Community Survey, which is indeed an estimate with a margin of error much larger than 0.4 percent, making it impossible to conclude from its report that non-white babies are literally a majority. It is useful for reporting trends, not for making declarative statements of estimates as if they were real numbers.
Here we are – 55+ years after passing the first Civ. il Rights Act in this country – hundreds of billions of dollars spent trying to correct many wrongs from the past – preferential treatment given in the form of Af firmative Action – free or subsidized public housing that was built in the ‘60s and has since been torn down (think about that waste); wel.fare money initially intended to help somebody get back on their feet turned into a perpetual sustenance; Medicaid to give “free” medical care; food stamps for the “less fortunate”, and countless other wastes of taxpayers’ money – and what do we have to show for it? 2 is for certain not a statistically representative sample, and depending on where the 100 were chosen, not that either.
That's actually a terrible example. You used the numbers 10 and 2...which will obviously SERIOUSLY skew the percentage with simply 1 kid failing in a 2 kid population. You can hide behind your terrible math and analytical skills, but the population totals are much, much, much, much higher numbers where an an accurate trend/verdict/conclusion can be reached based off those statistics you so failed to deny!

How come anytime the word MINORITY is written...... Blacks are the first thing that come to mind... The article clearly says that Indian and Latinos are the first two but somehow everyone read black (which was #3) and forgot everything else....
That's the same thing I said! Somehow "minority" defaults to Black in every conversation. It's quite interesting. The word, "crime" defaults to Blacks as well. I've read articles where non-Blacks commit a crime AND there is a photo available but the comments will say, "Blacks are ruining the country–those monkey's." Then they turn around and say "we", as in ALL Blacks, ALL 100% of us, won't take responsibility for our actions.
There are other reasons at work for the changes in these statistics. Interracial marriage for one. I'm white, my wife is asian, our son is classified as asian because that is his mothers race. If you ask me interracial marriage is the best shot we have at finally getting rid of the scurge of racial hatred and bigotry because we all become mutts.

The Duggar family (a million kids and counting) is not Catholic–I believe they go to a Baptist church.
The difference here is that Duggar family, being as weird as they are, can still afford to raise all of their children. Notice that large home they live in? The home that has enough room for all of them. Not the Latino family of 10 living in a house that should only be used for 4 people. I have lived in Baltimore and DC and what I am saying is from direct observation. These rented by Latino homes are usually made up of 1-3 women who have children. The women were probably evicted from their homes so they pooled together into this home making it over crowded, noisy and filthy. This is is not racism, this is observation.
The Duggars may be a little nutty having 19 kids but their large home is paid off....it was basically self built and took a few years to complete since the building materials were "pay as you build". They also make alot of the girl's clothes themselves & buy shoes etc at the 2nd hand store. They shop in bulk for food as well at discount stores. Their vehicles are also used since they own their own car sales business. They also own real estate so Daddy Duggar is often at home helping Michelle create more little Duggars. The older girls are responsible for the younger kids, cleaning, cooking, laundry etc & the older boys seems to handle the yard work etc.......Keep making more white babies....seems like we are going to need them.
Minorities are the only people who can afford children. No out of pocket costs.

This is too funny. What is a minority? Back in the 1700's a minority was an Irishman in the middle of a Scandanavian community or a Polish man in the middle of a Norwegian community. Then one day someone says "HEY! We are all the same color, lets at least put ourselves into the same catagory though we are all ethnically different. Well now that blacks, asians, hispanics, and others have come here and look visibly different now they are the minority. But really, our whole country is a minority. How many Czechs compared to Norwegians, Scandanavians, and so on are here? What is that break down. Today, we dont base a minority on your ethnic background, we base it on something visibly different like skin color and eye shape. Its a shame really. We are not all white, we are from many different countries in Europe with different traditions, different foods, music, and so on. Some how that distinction got lost and piled into one big lump of Caucasian. What a shame.

Let's take all but one of the races and compare them to whites. Then let's say that Mexicans can be of any race. The census defines "minority" as anyone who does not identify with whites excluding Mexicans because of course they can be of any race.
The Census Bureau has been around for a long time but apparently they don't seem to realize just how much they breed racism by making people check or click a box to claim a race. Their surveys may have some positive impacts for some races but if America is supposed to be a mixing bowl (el Crisobal) then surveys like this truly will never let racism go away and in fact encourage it.
The reason everything still asks about race is so that whites can continue bending over backwards to act politically correct, and so minorities can continue to cry about their poor victimized lives. It starts with the people. If people would stop treating minorities differently (ask white people who support Obama why they "love" him so much), and other people would wake up and recognize that ANYONE can be successful (ask black people who support Obama why they continue to complain about blacks having no path to success), we can end racism.

Karen, go to Arkansas, Tennessee, & Kentucky and you will find medicaid pays for white babies being born there too. Lack of insurance is a nationwide problem and impacts all aspects of the population. Not just minorities taking advantage of Medicaid. Until we get serious about affordable health insurance we wil always have this problem.

Race is an artificial distinction originally created in 1600's Virginia to take us from indentured servitude to full on slavery. If every minute of American history since then has been spent reminding minorities that they are inferior to whites (quite often in rather hideous ways), your suggestion is slightly unrealistic. Might I instead suggest "Truth and Reconciliation" modeled after South Africa.
The more politicians can separate Americans, the easier it is for them to deploy their nonsense. They bolster issues that tend to be social issues ( it's been happening lately i.e gay marriage), we fight and argue over these while they take their elitist agenda and act as if we are blind to the transformation that is occurring in our own government and branches. Our family experienced being a minority (as whites) when we lived in the SF Bay Area (northern San Jose). Our children's teachers and friends were East Indian, Chinese, African American, Vietnamese, Phillipino, and Hispanic. Our neighbors were Indian, Egyptian (Muslim and Coptic Christian), and Chinese. Although I disliked the traffic and transitional feel of the place, I loved the confluence of cultures (and food)!
As teens, our kids are now so comfortable and at ease dealing with people who don't look or talk like them because that was all they ever knew from birth. I think living there helped them become "global citizens." Interestingly, as part of the minority, they wanted to look like the majority when they were young–for example, one time my 8-year-old daughter noticed that her hair looked darker after a bath and she asked, "Does getting my hair wet help me look more Mexican?" Only once did our 6-year-old have a problem at school when some girls didn't want to play with her because, "White girls are mean." Overall, though, the experience was a positive one.
Good. Now take your pampered little girls and drop them off in Compton and see how "at ease" they are.
