(CNN)– U.S. minorities now represent more than half of America's population under the age of 1, the Census Bureau said, a historic demographic milestone with profound political, economic and social implications.
The bureau - defining a minority as anyone who is not "single race white" and "not Hispanic" - released estimates on Thursday showing that 50.4% of children younger than 1 were minorities as of July 1, 2011, up from 49.5% from the 2010 Census taken in April 2010.
"2011 is the first time the population of infants under age 1 is majority minority," said Robert Bernstein, a Census Bureau spokesman.
The latest statistics - which also count the national population younger than 5 as 49.7% minority in 2011, an increase from 49% in 2010 - portend a future of a more racially diverse America, with new and growing populations playing more important roles politically and economically in years to come, analysts say.
Like other analysts, Kenneth M. Johnson, senior demographer at the Carsey Institute and professor of sociology at the University of New Hampshire, isn't surprised at the trend.
"We've known it was going to come, but the question was what year the "crossover point" would happen, he said.
"Little children are in the vanguard of all this change coming to America." he said.
Johnson sees the trend as an opportunity for more Americans to embrace diversity. More children are going to be exposed to a more diverse group of classmates, and that will affect attitudes and outlook.
The changes are going to be felt first in hospitals, as well as schools, where an increasingly diverse child population has to be absorbed. Hospitals would need interpreters and translators, for example, Johnson said. English as a second language would be an educational priority.
While many regions such as Atlanta have a diverse population, other regions lack racial and ethnic variety and will have to deal with a new kind of population, he said. In declining rural counties, he said, an influx of groups like Hispanics would serve to renew communities and changes would ensue.
"For a country that's aging, we need young workers, and the growth of the minority population will contribute to the size of the young adult workforce," he said. "This is breathing new life into the United States."
Jeff Passell, senior demographer at the Pew Hispanic Center, called the Census numbers "a cumulative effect of 35 to 40 years of immigration" bringing large numbers of Latinos, Asians and other immigrants into the United States.
He said the Hispanic population in particular is very young, much more concentrated in child-bearing years, and has a higher fertility rate than the white, non-Hispanic population. Lately, he says, there are a lot more births among native Hispanics in the United States than new Hispanic immigrants, a "cumulative effect" of immigration.
If the trend continues, Passell says several decades from now, possibly in the late 2030s or early 2040s, the U.S. population will become less than 50% non-Hispanic white.
"This is a trend that we can reasonably expect to continue. The factors that determine this have been set into motion, and in demography things tend to change gradually," he said.
There were 114 million minorities in 2011, or 36.6% of the U.S. population, a bump of half a percentage point from 2010. The latest figures count Hispanics as the most populous and fastest growing minority group.
They numbered 52 million in 2011, and their population grew by 3.1% since 2010. The U.S. Hispanic population grew from 16.3% in 2010 to 16.7% in 2011.
"California had the largest Hispanic population of any state on July 1, 2011 (14.4 million), as well as the largest numeric increase within the Hispanic population since April 1, 2010, (346,000)," the Census said.
"New Mexico had the highest percentage of Hispanics at 46.7%. Los Angeles had the largest Hispanic population of any county (4.8 million) in 2011 and the largest numeric increase since 2010 (73,000). Starr County - on the Mexican border in Texas - had the highest share of Hispanics (95.6 percent)."
Asians numbered 18.2 million nationally in 2011, making them the second fastest-growing minority group - up by 3% since 2010. Figures show that California had the largest Asian population of any state at 5.8 million and the largest increase since 2010 at 131,000.
"Hawaii is our nation's only majority-Asian state, with people of this group comprising 57.1% of the total population. Los Angeles had the largest Asian population of any county (1.6 million) in 2011, and also the largest numeric increase (16,000) since 2010. At 61.2%, Honolulu had the highest percentage of Asians in the nation," the Census said.
African-Americans are the second largest minority group in the United States at 43.9 million in 2011, an increase of 1.6% from 2010. New York has the largest black population of any state with 3.7 million and Texas has the largest increase from 2010 of 84,000. Cook County, Illinois, which includes Chicago, has the largest black population of any county at 1.3 million. Fulton County, Georgia, which includes Atlanta, has the largest increase since 2010 at 13,000.
The District of Columbia has the highest percentage of blacks at 52.2%. Mississippi has the second-largest at 38%.
America's native population - labeled "American Indian and Alaska Native population" by the Census - was about 6.3 million in 2011, up 2.1% from 2010. California had the largest such population at 1,050,000 and the largest increase at 23,000. Alaska had the highest share at 19%. Los Angeles had the largest such population of any county, with 231,000, and the largest increase, 9,000 since 2010.
The population classified as "Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander" was 1.4 million in 2011, up 2.9% since 2010. Hawaii had the largest such population of any state at 359,000 and the highest percentage at 26.1. California had the largest increase since 2010 at 9,000. Honolulu has the largest population of any county at 235,000. Los Angeles County had the largest increase since 2011 at 2,700.
Of single race non-Hispanic whites, California had the largest population at 15 million. Texas had the largest increase since 2010 at 80,000. Maine had the highest percentage of the non-Hispanic white alone population, 94.3 percent.
Four states and the District of Columbia have predominantly minority populations, Hawaii, at 77%, the District of Columbia at 64.7%, California, at 60.3%, New Mexico, at 59.8%, and Texas, at 55.2%. Minorities comprised the majority population in 11% of the nation's 3,143 counties.
Michael White, professor of sociology at Brown University, said the rise of minorities fits into a longer-term evolution of the U.S. population, a mosaic that has been adapting to ethnic change since the first Census was recorded in 1790. There have been many groups represented over time, from enslaved and indigenous peoples, those of European stock, and now to a population reflecting the wider world - truly a "melting pot," he said.
White says it's hard to say how the changes will affect politics and that one can't assume that ethnic patterns will determine voting patterns. Local economic issues, for example, will evolve differently in different states and cities, and there are economic benefits of having a younger population, he said.
"The political dimensions will play out differently," he said. And by the time the babies are old enough to cast ballots, "the United States will be a different place when they are walking into a voting booth."
William Frey, Brookings Institution demographer, sees political challenges for new immigrants and an economy benefiting from their presence. Many Hispanics and Asians are too young to vote or can't cast ballots because they haven't become citizens.
"It's going to take perhaps awhile before the younger people get more engaged in politics. They do have an impact in some places, like swing states, such as Nevada, Colorado and Florida. They can make a difference," he said.
He, too, says that newcomers to the United States bring an energy that invigorates the economic system and an older society.
"I think we're going to just see that the younger part of the population will have a different vibe," he said. "They are sort of needed to help our youthful image and to add to that vitality. They will bring a dimension and element we sorely need."

It has to do with 19th century definitions of race and what does "white" mean? Many African Americans and Asians have a high percentage of European ancestors, but they are not considered to be "white" even if they have blonde hair and blue eyes.
It's not the math it's the fact that the Census Bureau, school applications and a lot of other forms instigate racism by suggesting that you choose a side which amounts to choosing a team. Some will argue that it's about distributing more money to certain races but that is another argument.
The census authors may think it's okay because the number comes from how we perceive ourselves. The authors may not be directly responsible for defining the categories of race but no matter how old the terms "minority" and "majority"
are, the terms are meant to compare whites to non-whites. We're supposed to think that is not racist?
More Diverse? I think not. it simply points out that there's less whites and more whoever is the majority these days.
So now here is the question. Does Affirmative Action benefit whites now instead? Because if they eliminate it now that whites are a minority, that would absolutely be racism.
Ive always been against affirmative action because it is racism. It hurts the community by not hiring qualified individuals and yet hiring unqualified individuals, simply by the color of their skin. That is the very definition of racism. Someone should be hired due to their abilities REGARDLESS of color. But now that whites are a minority , it is equally as racist to eliminate the program. (even though it never should've existed)

I live in a community that has a lot of lower income black families and believe me they do live differently!! If they don't have get good parents that motivate and encourage them to get and educated, you won't have ones that are interested in voting much less running for office. So nothing much will change

Even within ethnic groups there is still color based bigotry – I know I was shocked the first time I heard a black person disparage another for being "dark," but I have found over the years that it is commonplace for lightskinned blacks to ridicule those of a darker shade. The U.S. census needs to get out of 19th century colonial thinking mindset. Hispanic is not a color. You can record and report on skin color OR on ethnic origin. But the two are not interchangeable. This kind of information would be thrown out of any peer reviewed scientific journal as just plain wrong. Just as Hispanics can be any skin color, so can an Asian, an African or an European. They could say there are more children being born to recent immigrants who came to the U.S. in the past decades. But then again you could say that about every decade in U.S. census history.
The census does classify if an individual is Hispanic and, if so, of which race. So they do not simply group them all together as a race.
I do not know why anyone puts stock in any of this. I know a bl ack fella who claimed to be white for many years. Even had it on his DL. I also know of some whi te folks that claim to be Hispan ic or bl ack so that they can get free bennies from the State, and GOvernment. If race is not supposed to matter why do we spend so much time and money tracking race. Could it be that it is in the GOvernments best interest to keep the races at each others throat? COuld it be that millions of federal dollars are wasted on paychecks, departments , and lobbying, and without racism those would all go away. For the most part most people do not care what race you are. the color of your skin is far more important to you, than to me.

That trend will continue. With China's one child per family policy, those that can will come to the United States to have their second and third babies.
It is the other way around. The Chinese come here to go to school/work have a baby or two then go back to chine with the children then have their 1 child per family in China. It seems that children born outside of China do not count towards the 1 child per family. I got this from a few Chinese couples. Yes they were planing on having some children while in the US then going back home to have their last child. The children born outside of China will get to choose their citizenship when they turn 18.
Asians of Chinese decent make up less than a quarter of that population. There are almost as many Filipinos and Indians. Unless the population of Chinese descent is having 7 children per woman and the rest is having 1, the One-Child policy is irrelevant or at least not a significant player in in this phenomenon.

The flip side is that on average families with fewer children tend to be more affluent. As a consequence the higher reproduction rate of latinos is not entirely an advantage for them.
Its a known historical fact that every majority group has villianized the one they see coming after them. Scotts, italians, english, french, Jews have all had thier share of hatered while all hating blacks. So when every european ethnic group finally became "whites", its now hispanics that are bad. As a non-white, non-hispanic natualized citizen of this country, all I do is love this place for what it is and for what it has given me. And when you love something, you are loyal to it. You protect it. People who come to this place, given that a few are bad apples, mostly come here for opportunites that this place has to offer and can't thank their stars enough for that. We as Americans, need not be scared of each other but instead extend our hand to our fellow Americans in time of need. Believe me, everything else will fall into place. Fear and hatered on the other hand will only destroy US.

THe comments on here are so depressing. I know lots of different people of different races and some are poor and some are rich. I have lived in the South, Southwest and Northeast. I have seen people of all colors fail to care for their children and abuse the welfare system including some of those who rich. I have seen people of all colors work hard to care for their families and not use or abuse the welfare system, some of them very. very poor. The fact that so many peopl (based on the comments here) believe that whites take care of their own and dont use or abuse the welfare system while minorities are all poor breeders milking the welfare system makes me sick. Poor people, regardless of race, always have a higher rate of children than the rich, this has been true throughout human history. The white Americans of today are the desendents of the poor classes that overflowed the populations of every European country in the 17th, 18th 19th and 20th centuries. They came here because they were poor, had large familes and were stuck at the bottom in the Old Country.

The genetic diversity in skin is FAR LESS than the genetic diversity between two siblings! Typical lack of education in the US leads to the standard uninformed opinions.
You take a group of black people and leave them to breed in a northern country and in a few thousand years their skin will BECOME WHITE. Take a bunch of white people and drop them off in Africa to breed for a few thousand years and their skin will evolve to BECOME BLACK.

It's changing demograhics and no real surprise. As a white person, I'm not the least bit alarmed because this is simply the historical trend. Some whites, especially conservatives, will go into major panic mode about this and try to use it as a political wedge; that's inevitale as well.

However, if you seperate them by race, there are still more white births and they are not in the minority. I can easily sit in Congress and give my vote on a tax increase or whatever when I make 200k a year and get to expense everything to the tax payers. Both sides do that. If Congress really wanted this country to change the line item veto would of passed. That way none of this super long bills would have totally unrelated earmarks and laws placed into them. If Congress is going to vote on healthcare then vote on healthcare not healthcare with earmarks for corporations or states added in. It has and will be for a while about money. Plan and simple. Yes, tests of math and reading, the most basic of skills in modern society, find that blacks score lower than whites, in fact lower than any other race. Therefore the tests are racist, math is racist, and reading is racist. Everything is racist. Or maybe the races are not really equal, and that's just a myth that people are being brainwashed into believing.

More Blacks in prison then in college? Of my 450 Facebook friends, 200 of whom are Black, more then half has graduate degrees while the others are in college for undergrad. I highly doubt I'm the only young Black woman in America under 35 who speaks a few languages, has several degrees, and knows similar Blacks of the same caliber. Maybe I just happen to know all the smart, middle to upper-class Blacks in America *shrug*. And, the government didn't pay for my education nor did they pay for my children, since I haven't had any yet. They also haven't had to pay for my abortion(s), since I haven't had that either. Stereotypes are fun!
You should factor in the head start we whites had.
One thing I can say in response to that is that there has been no change at all in the difference between white and black scores on the SAT since 1990, so for 20 years. That is after all kinds of program to help blacks, from Head Start to free lunch, to affirmative action to special tutoring, etc. So it doesn't seem like those programs are helping even a little bit.

At one time welfare was a whites only program. No one but whites could participate. Now everyone is allowed. Welfare should be eliminated in its current form. If you are not putting into the system then you should not be taking from it. That is not racial, that is economics. If I am working two jobs and still can't make it, then I should get some assistance, if and only if I can PROVE where all money is going. Nice cars, cell phones, cable TV are all "extra". Food, water, shelter and in this day and age the Internet are must haves. By the way I am black, so before someone thinks I am some racist jerk, think again. Everyone needs some help sometime, but exhaust all your other options before asking for a handout.
If you require welfare recepients to verify where their income is going, then we really should do the same of the rich. If they say they need tax cuts in order to create jobs, we, as citizens, must verify that the only thing the rich does with any tax cuts is towards jobs. We cannot keep subsidizing the rich by giving them free money when we have a massive foreign debt created by the rich moving jobs overseas. The rich move jobs overseas, then somehow get others to agree that the foreign deficit is all of America's problem. No, it is not!!!! Either move those jobs back on American soil for Americans, or start getting taxed more!!!

While blacks comprise roughly 12% of the population they consume over 33% of the social services. So sure you can make claims that by sheer volume whites receive more benefits, but as I stated before, minorities consume a greater percentage when compared to the amount they contribute. There's your "facts"......

These statistics are misleading. Its not accounting for mixed race children. They count those who are born from a mixed family as the minority factor. If you are part Caucasian part African american then they lump that person into the African american column and not both. All this could mean is that children are being born more of a mixed race family. Remember as long as you have a minority blood line some where in you, you are automatically a minority in the statistics eye.

Our government is made up primarily of White people, so if they are the ones "protecting" minorities, White people must have wanted it to be that way. This can be attributed to the fact that every other nationality wants a piece of the "American dream", which is rapidly dying due to the numbers of uneducated people sneaking into this country and soaking up the government assistance. Congress needs to address the problem the 14th Amendment and it's misinterpretation has wrought. If we do not repeal or change the idea that anyone born on American soil is an automatic American citizen, it will only get worse and America will die. No other country in the world offers this kind of citizenship, and every other country takes advantage of it. If Congress refuses to change this Amendment, then it's time for the citizens of the U.S. to call for a Continental Congress and get it changed.
