The impact of the 'Latino vote' beyond Texas

Editor’s note: As President Barack Obama and GOP candidate Mitt Romney court the Latino community’s vote, CNN takes an In Depth look at this complex and diverse community, what matters most to Latino voters, and how their vote will influence the November elections.

by Alicia W. Stewart, CNN

(CNN) - By now, it has been established that Latino voters are a diverse group and a crucial electorate that will help determine the next president of the United States.

But here is what's new to know about the impact of Latino voters: It will be felt in places one might not expect.

"Moving beyond the Southwest and Florida, Latino voters can also influence the election results in 'nontraditional' states like North Carolina, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Virginia, " said Matt Barreto, co-founder of Latino Decisions, a polling firm. "Those states have had substantial growth in the Latino population and among voters, based on our analysis of census data and statewide voter rolls."

Florida-based political analyst Charles Garcia noted earlier this year that in North Carolina, the number of registered Hispanic voters has almost doubled to more than 130,000 since the last presidential election.

"President Obama won North Carolina in 2008 by 14,000 votes," Garcia said. "In 2008 there were 68,000 registered Latino voters, and a whopping 84% of them participated in the election."

Polling experts say this shift will affect the 2012 election.

A recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Telemundo poll found 61% of Latino registered voters’ choice for president was Barack Obama, and 27% choose former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Latino voters played a key role in Obama's 2008 win over Republican John McCain. Nationally, Obama won 67% of Hispanic voters, including the battleground state of Florida, with 57% of the Latino vote.

It was only four years earlier that Latino voters in Florida supported President George W. Bush with 56% of the vote in his re-election bid. Nationally, Bush was re-elected with 40% of the  Latino vote.

Republican strategist Ana Navarro suggests that Romney's "campaign needs to wake up and go to sleep every night thinking of the Latino vote"  to win the election.

And as the American demographic changes, David Bositis, a senior research associate at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, comments that the GOP's traditional voters are "dying off".

The Republican Party understands the need to court Latino voters to win the White House and continues to make outreach efforts.

Demographic changes may be shining a spotlight on the candidates' efforts, but it is the issues that matter.

It comes as no surprise that for Latinos, just as for all Americans, improving the economy is a top concern. But how candidates speak about immigration, even as most Latinos are American citizens,  have shaped conversation and discussion that are informing how Latinos vote. Of particular interest has been support of the DREAM Act, a bill that offers a path to citizenship for some minors who entered the country illegally.

Additionally, as immigration from Mexico has come to a virtual halt, the future of how the Latino vote is discussed will affect how this electorate is viewed.

“The Latino vote has gone from being an ethnic vote, to an immigrant vote and now back to an ethnic vote, " said Gregory Rodriguez, founder of Center for Social Cohesion at Arizona State University. "The end of immigration as we know it is redefining Latinos and redefining the so called Latino vote.”

Send all the Mexican illegals Packing back to the Border! They are not welcome here ,they break our laws and hurt the american Taxpayer. Its time Americans take their country back before the Mexican illegals turn the USA into the rat infested slums in Mexico. Before we know it we will see Donkey carts in every neighborhood with the Mexican flag plasterd to it because we turned into a 3rd world country like Mexico. It really offends Americans when we see the Mexican flag plastered on the car bumpers, tee shirts,or the homes of illegals. If you love it here why would you not have the American flag??? The answer is simple, you do not love the USA,you love our benefits and money, jobs, schools, but spit on our flag and country. Lets get rid of these illegals who steal from us and laugh at us for letting them take advantage of us.Lets give them a one way ticket back to the place the love so much and they can fly their Mexican flag there!!!!!!!!!!!

Most immigrants when they come to the US embrace being American. I think their problem is that they still identify with Mexico rather than becoming American. Their loss, our problem.

You sir are what's wrong with America. I hope you feel good about the nonsense you're posting. Most immigrants I know do NOT behave in this fashion. Stop the biased thinking and look beyond your own tiny world; you might see a much better picture of America that way. Whenever I hear comments like this it takes me back to South Park and the "They took our jobs!" quotes. No, they didn't take your jobs so stop saying it. Dare I say it? Typical Republican thinking. You know nothing about nothing but are happy to replicate any message from your party that produces hate and bigotry. There is NO place for you in the new America.

As a college educated born and raised Latino, I have yet to decide who I will be voting for. Please remember that not all Latinos can be grouped together, we like everyone else have many different opinions amongst ourselves. It is sad to see all of these racist comments, we are like everyone else trying to make a living and provide for our families. All this deported racist talk is deplorable, most of the people making comments like that had ascendents who were once themselves immigrants, pure ignorance. sad. O and by the way before you even say I am illegal my parents are from puerto rico and people in my family have gotten draft cards like everyone else, so please have some respect.

@ Cambridge Ray – it is unclear who hates us more the GOP for screwing up the economy because the Latino community has been hit the hardest as far as losing jobs and homes; or the DNC for deporting more Latinos between 2008 – 2012 (over 1.7 million) than during the eight years of the racist white guy called Bush – so it is clear that neither party has our best interest in mind but to call one or the other a hater is unclear to me when they both talk a good game – like Obama – but don’t deliver like Bush.

lol very true Reagan's bill was helpful to anyone who had entered the US before 1982 but any after 82 were out of luck. However the point of that bill was for the USA to not have this same illegal problem again 26 years later. So I think one way or the other we need to decide what we are going to do about the current illegal immigrants and then Fix our laws in a way to prevent illegals in the future but make immigration as a whole easier to do.

People in Dallas want cheap for lawns mowed, fences, pools, houses, housecleaning, office cleaning, burgers with veggies, etc. Then they all want the illegals to go back where they came from. Then wen no one is there to pick the crops in Alabama, they want to twist the immigration laws. People, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Ha, ha, ha! How many "white Americans" do you see mowing lawns, cleaning houses, working all day in the fields tending crops? NONE! Mexican immigrants (legal or not) do all of this work. Even our "blacks" are too lazy to perform such jobs. Our cities are filled with unemployable "blacks", few ever even apply for work. I know! I work for a company in San Francisco. Next to our plant is a huge public housing project. In more than 20 years working here, not one "black" living in this project has ever walked the 100 yards to our office and completed a job application! We do, however, employ legal Mexican immigrants who spend 1 hour or more commuting each way to come to work.

This is a Catch-22 issue because I do not believe anyone really wants to separate families, but one thing never thought about – many of the children were used as vehicles in hopes of staying in this country thus a derogatory term is used for the children, which I will never use). I have many Latino friends, as well as knowing many. The thinking by many in the foreign countries were to get here illegally, have a baby, and be able to stay here. In essence, the parents originally used the children. PLEASE DO NOT think I am saying, in any way, the parents do not love the children.

I agree with you about our embassy situation. This is absolutely ridiculous. Legal immigration is so difficult and expensive today. For decades it was so simply just to walk in from Mexico. Now we are busy building our own "Berlin Wall" between the US and Mexico. What eventually happened to the Berlin Wall? Our immigration policies contribute greatly to the problem of illegals living and working in the US. Our "Berlin Wall" will someday have to be torn down, this kind of prevention simply does not work.

I agree and was born in Honduras, now naturalized citizen. We need border security not just for illegal immigration, but terrorists and drug runners. Splitting up families is not desirable, but people coming illegally know what the possibilities could be. Not opposed to the Dream Act per se, but I don't want it to encourage others just because it is there, maybe a one time thing?

But this works hand in hand with making our immigration laws make Alot more sense, As I don't agree with separating a family because they have an American child but the parents may only be a resident. We as a country shouldn't reward ppl for coming illegally but prevention is something that can be fixed. As for the ppl who have already come to this country illegally, they have "broken our Laws" but I think it should be looked at for the right thing to do for both our country and for the childern of these illegal immigrants, some that are US citizens

Well, Mom, you must be either very naive or ignorant to believe that the GOP are the bad guys here. The Dems are just as corrupt and self-serving. The only difference between these two parties is who gets paid and who gains the advantage. Unfortunately, the average American suffers no matter which one is in power. The Dems do a better job at fooling the poor and minority communities. If you don't believe me, just follow the money. In fact, Dems have received more than 80% of all money from Wall St. and Insurance Companies for over 20 years now.

That is quite interesting. All the Latino/White mix people I know vote both issues. I patronize Hispanic and White businesses and am quite versatile in communications. I look more white, but my brother looks more Mexican. On the voting topic, I vote for items that I feel best represent the area for which I live, and the country as a whole. I live within miles of the international border, and see how families are divided by a fence on a daily basis. I see the lines of people clearing customs first thing in the morning to go to work. I have friends that are both civilian and military that live on the Mexican side of the fence due to the cost of living on the US side. As far as immigration, I am not for illegal immigration, but people need to understand what causes it, why it continues, and what can be done. This should not be based on fear of language or customs.

The same goes for collection companies , now they are owned by Indians.
The loopholes take away jobs from Americans.

I wonder why the Republicans are again, like in 2000, eliminating latinos and blacks from legitimate voter rolls in Florida. (Fact!). Republicans have a war going against women, the elderly and people of color. Their dream is to do away with Planned Parenthood, Medicaid, Social Security and Medicare. They opposed those programs and called them communism.

What is amazing is how the GOP has hoodwinked the middle class and lower class white males to vote for them. There is no privelage of being white and impoverished, white and without social security and medicare, white and existing in a society where your technical "freedom" is a world where your children have no future without that "Marxist" education system and you and your family will perish without those "Socialist" benefits . In a society of unlimited corporate influence, where corporations have been defined as people, where the wealthy elite have untrammeled influence and power, you may feel superior to your Latino or Black neighbor, but in reality you will be not even chattel. Voting for the GOP is like Jewish people voting for self loading boxcars.

It is almost impossible to deport 20 plus illegals we need a program that will help the ones here become citizens if they turn themselves in and show they worked at a job that didnot take americans jobs away. Any law abiding hispanic who did it the right way, should be appalled that they cheated to come here. they don't deserve to be here. If people see their interests ignored until election time and still vote for the offending political party that would make them stupid. The fat-cat Republicans love Latinos for cleaning their pools and making their beds – until election time. Then they show up in the bario speaking accented Spanish phrases and expecting everybody to believe their lies. Look at the Paul Ryan proposal for a budget and see how much Republicans care about minorities. When the trash Medicare (and Medicaid), Social Security, and destroy the public schools with their vouchers how well will Latinos fare then?

The ONLY difference between the so-called "Anchor Babies" and babies born to the descendants of the Mayflower is that the former will probably grow up fluently bilingual while the latter won't. I speak flawless, unaccented English – you would never guess that my mother tongue is an Eastern European language. I came here legally but human biology doesn't care a whit about paperwork – if you grow up in the US or Canada, you will find yourself 100% Americanized.

Actually, your argument ignores the fact that race does matter. I know - the media told you differently. Mankind has moved around from the beginning. Look at the societies today. Which ones function?

If Latinos were so great, their homelands would be sucessful bastions of wealth. Instead, the are impoverished hellholes. The same with Subsahara Africa.

You can't move any "immigrant" into a country and think that he or she can duplicate the qualities of the founding ethnic group. To think otherwise is quite ignorant.

All was done over 2 centuries of hard work. Tell me again that all Latin Americans are not capable to start and maintain developed societies.

  32. We Have Seen Enough

Have you all heard the latest news? Romney is out campaigning with, get a load of this, Trump! Well as far as we Hispanics/Latinos are concerned this answers all questions for the most part for us. Had Romney been campaigning with a working-class person we might have thought differently but No, he is out campaigning with a Super Mega-Rich Billionaire!! That figures! And no doubt it will be the rich pitted against the Middle Class and the Poor with Romney now and for good. He is clearly showing us his true colors now. So, if he was to change horses in the middle of the race so to speak and pun intended, just to show himself campaigning with a working class citizen later on, we would no more believe him than to believe he is just another 9-5 working-class person himself. Enough said. We have seen enough to know the difference of who is Really For US. OBAMA/BIDEN 2012!!

The answer is simple Mexicans do not love this country they only love the money and benefits they can suck out of us then send the money back to mexico to stimulate their economy. Time to make a Federal law for all States like arizonas illegal alien law, or the "NO WAY JOSE LAW" call tyour congress to push new and tougher laws against these illegal invaders, lets finally get rid of this problem we all face.We dont want our citys to turn into slums like the citys in mexico,we dont want our towns and neighborhoods to slowly turn into Mexico 2.0 Its time to take America back to these ungrateful people that steal from us every day! I am a woman of mixed heritage- German, Irish, Cajun French, and Cherokee. I clean homes. I have worked in the corporate world In telecommunications as well. I held that career for over fifteen years, and it was not a low level grunt job. I do not clean homes due to a lack of intelligence, motivation, or because I cannot get a "regular" job. I clean homes because I get a chance to help people. I live in Dallas Fort Worth, and should get paid more but have a hard time beating the low wage the government subsidized illegal worker gets.

It makes me ill every time people respond with the fact that white people will not do that work. WE do. I am sure there are those who might say I am not white b/c of my Native American heritage, but my birth certificate and red hair and green eyes say otherwise.

So stop. I am tired of that tired argument. They do, and until we straighten out America, they need to go home and straighten out Mexico. Period. They tore up my home town of Houston, and further South is a mess, they are slowly tearing up my area... and do not even get me started about what they have done to California. Hispanics/Latinos Take Good Notice!! The GOP in the U.S.A. is speaking very clearly and telling you this! Of course it isn't as if you didn't already know that they are Not your friends! But it serves nevertheless, to show you just how venomous the GOP is to you Hispanics or Latinos in these United States. Again, Take Good Note Of This and continue your push in voting for President Obama in 2012 now that you know unequivocally how Repugs feel about you!! The Difference is crystal clear. Republicans simply do not like you or care to help you and never will. They are speaking quite Loud and Clear so you understand that they don't.

    • The Real Question

The real question is Why Are So Many CONServatives so fraught with prejudice, racism, and divisiveness against Hispanics and Latinos? Answer that. Why? Will they pass the Dream Act? No! It would be a cold day in hell that they would bother themselves to do that. Instead, they would love to Drive Hispanics and Latinos out of this country so they won't be such a menacing threat to their reelection efforts anymore! Why haven't they helped the Democrats in Congress pass the Dream Act that the Democrats, by comparison, are dying to pass for Hispanics and Latinos? Why is it that only Repubs champion and pass profiling immigration laws like the ones in Arizona and other states that are quite hurtful even to native born Americans of Hispanic or Latino heritage? And even the courts have invalidated much of the Republican-made laws against Latinos. Take Good Note Of That! And why is one of Arizona's famous sheriffs under investigation by the Justice Department?

Repubs have also been working doubly hard drawing up redistricting lines to give them the advantage and to further marginalize Hispanics and Latinos to be under Republicans who could care less about them and would just as soon throw them under the bus and forget all about them. Our Only Hope is OBAMA/BIDEN 2012!! Viva La Raza!!!!!! We WILL Overcome and re-elect President Obama who truly Believes in us and helps us even as his opponent would rather not do. That is why La Raza Will Be the Deciding Factor That Will Overwhelmingly Vote Obama in for another term in November!! Get over it already. Repubs, your guy just doesn't have what it takes. The other top story by Navarette complains that in Texas the Latino candidate is unfairly being linked to illegal immigration in attack ads yet this story classifies that issue as important to all Latinos-it's not. Cruz is a great example why taking Americans who are from around 30 countries and territories and artificially putting them together as some race or ethnic group based on the fact they were old Spanish colonies. They have NOTHING in common except they speak Spanish, they are all different races and cultures. Just because an issue may be important to Americans of Mexican descent, dos not mean anyone else from a Latin American country cares about it. This type of small minded thinking that Hispanic and Latino is this one unified group will hurt Latino candidates like Cruz who want and need broader support outside of that community.

If I had a business and was making $1,000,000 in profit a year and I had a chance to make $3,000,000 in profit if I advertised in Spanish. Guess what; I'm advertising in Spanish too. Saving money itself is not wrong, but windfall to the wealthy just when we can least afford it is deception. The Republican Party doesn't tell the country that the pennies Bubba saved would cause trillions of deficit because of the windfalls to the wealthy.

The Republican Party is shrewd but lack of ethics. They know people love to save money, so they offer to cut taxes. It turns out for every penny a Bubba saves, the wealthy save $1 million. Yes, people get to save money, but the wealthy gets a windfall. That's the wrong of the Republican party, brilliant, but without morality.

It's not like there is some giant Latino meeting we all attend and then decide as a group where to cast our votes. We care about particular issues just like any other group. My family is pretty divided about 50/50 Republican/Democrat just may families. And trying to spout out a few Spanish sentences you learned doesn't impress either.

Latinos as a minority, in my observation, are hard working people. The Latino family might be poor and need assistance when they're beginning a life in the US, like most immigrants were in the past centuries, but once their children have adapted and have become educated, they become part of the middle classes.

The media seems to be whipping up racial and ethnic hatred a lot these days. Most Hispanics and whites that I know are friends and many also marry eachother. Their children are a nice micture of the new and old world. It sure is a shame we cannot celebrate the many ethnic mixtures that we Americans share. Instead, we pit those ethnicities against eachother. My dad is German and my mom is Mexican. I love them both and cherish both my ethnicities. I have been to both Germany and Mexico. I love them both.

They are trying to breed us out of existence. The U.S. Census Bureau says that by 2040, the White population will be a minortiy, YAY, then we can make a N.A.A.W.P. party.

Whites will not be a minority in 2040. This is a statistical distortion propogated by the white hating media on purpose. The distortion lies in the fact that nearly 50% of Hispanics are racially white. In addition, 30% of first generation hispanics marry Anglos. Their children are racially white. By the second generation, the percentage jumps to 60%. Their children are also racially white and will not speak Spanish. Colectively, in terms of race, whites will account for over 80% of the population in 2050. What is also interesting about these statistics is the that census beareau never said whites will be the minority. Only the media and media representatives have. The numbers have not. White is a race. Hispanic is an ethnicity. Hope this helps.
