Editor’s note: As President Barack Obama and GOP candidate Mitt Romney court the Latino community’s vote, CNN takes an In Depth look at this complex and diverse community, what matters most to Latino voters, and how their vote will influence the November elections.

(CNN) - By now, it has been established that Latino voters are a diverse group and a crucial electorate that will help determine the next president of the United States.
But here is what's new to know about the impact of Latino voters: It will be felt in places one might not expect.
"Moving beyond the Southwest and Florida, Latino voters can also influence the election results in 'nontraditional' states like North Carolina, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Virginia, " said Matt Barreto, co-founder of Latino Decisions, a polling firm. "Those states have had substantial growth in the Latino population and among voters, based on our analysis of census data and statewide voter rolls."
Florida-based political analyst Charles Garcia noted earlier this year that in North Carolina, the number of registered Hispanic voters has almost doubled to more than 130,000 since the last presidential election.
"President Obama won North Carolina in 2008 by 14,000 votes," Garcia said. "In 2008 there were 68,000 registered Latino voters, and a whopping 84% of them participated in the election."
Polling experts say this shift will affect the 2012 election.
A recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Telemundo poll found 61% of Latino registered voters’ choice for president was Barack Obama, and 27% choose former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
Latino voters played a key role in Obama's 2008 win over Republican John McCain. Nationally, Obama won 67% of Hispanic voters, including the battleground state of Florida, with 57% of the Latino vote.
It was only four years earlier that Latino voters in Florida supported President George W. Bush with 56% of the vote in his re-election bid. Nationally, Bush was re-elected with 40% of the Latino vote.
Republican strategist Ana Navarro suggests that Romney's "campaign needs to wake up and go to sleep every night thinking of the Latino vote" to win the election.
And as the American demographic changes, David Bositis, a senior research associate at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, comments that the GOP's traditional voters are "dying off".
The Republican Party understands the need to court Latino voters to win the White House and continues to make outreach efforts.
Demographic changes may be shining a spotlight on the candidates' efforts, but it is the issues that matter.
It comes as no surprise that for Latinos, just as for all Americans, improving the economy is a top concern. But how candidates speak about immigration, even as most Latinos are American citizens, have shaped conversation and discussion that are informing how Latinos vote. Of particular interest has been support of the DREAM Act, a bill that offers a path to citizenship for some minors who entered the country illegally.
Additionally, as immigration from Mexico has come to a virtual halt, the future of how the Latino vote is discussed will affect how this electorate is viewed.
“The Latino vote has gone from being an ethnic vote, to an immigrant vote and now back to an ethnic vote, " said Gregory Rodriguez, founder of Center for Social Cohesion at Arizona State University. "The end of immigration as we know it is redefining Latinos and redefining the so called Latino vote.”

Actually I ccan see very well. Obama has done very well given that the Republican party wants the U.S. to fail so they can get back into power. 23% of Republicans still believe that Obama wasn't born in America. The majority of Republicans do not believe in global warming while 97% of scientists do believe in global warming, It looks like Republicans want people to be stupid and Democrats want them to be educated.

As long as they are citizens, they can vote for whoever they want. If they are not citizens they have NO LEGAL right to vote, but then when has legality ever stopped either party from stuffing the ballott box?
Do a little research and see how many actual cases of voter fraud there have been over the past few elections. I don't care who you vote for, but at least know your facts, so you don't get distracted by a non-existent issue.

According to the latest census Whites make up 72% of the population, blacks make up 13% of the population while hispanic/latinos make up 15% of the population. So why are we interested in their vote again?

The Republicans don't have to court anyone. Every American just has to decide if they want to keep their own money or have the government take it and spend it for them. Simple as that.

I'd like to point out that people used to be just as mortified when the Irish were immigrating to the US in droves. I remember when I came here and went to college, I was surprised to see that my history professor did not let ideology dictate his views. He praised other religions, admired different societies and this was all very new to me. I was in Kentucky, and I used to work in the landscaping department of the beautiful campus. The gardener told me that 'this is America, as far as I am concerned you can worship a piece of rock if you want to.' The impact of all this was, that I wanted to become more and more American. I started eating chicken nuggets regularly, have never missed a batman movie and I say 'oh snap' when things don't work out.

They are not voting for anyone except the one who promises to give them, the illegal immigrant full unconditional freedom to get what ever they want but my question is why can't Americans do the same in Mexico as the immigrants are allowed in the U.S. to do? It's still the economy. If there are less jobs for citizens it is likely there are less jobs for immigrants, and less incentive to stay or encourage other family members to immigrate. Latinos come to the U.S. overwhelmingly because of job opportunities offered by a healthy economy. Nothing more, unless you're Cuban.

I wouldn't say won for Obama yet, but he IS leading in Florida, Ohio, and Virginia, and starts with a higher electoral count in his corner. Most people agree Romney needs to win two out of three to win the election, and Ohio is rapidly falling out of his grasp. Virginia is close though, and Florida isn't a lock yet.
Nevermind a LOT could happen with the economy, or Iran/Syria before the election. But right now, Obama is basically praying for the status quo to last a few more months.

I am really getting tired of these choice of words (non-traditional) when it comes to other races that are non-white. Lets get something clear here. THIS WAS NEVER A WHITE AMERICA. Yes, a democracy was created, established and maintained by, what many say, white individuals which have created and protected our human rights (all of us) and provided a better place to live. It's a shame and at times disgusting that so many people assume Hispanics are immigrants. Many Hispanics have familial roots that go back several generations like my hubby's. People have even been rude enough to ask me if we got married for a green card. I usually tell them no, that my family came from Ireland nearly 200 hundred years ago so I'm legal. That usually shuts them up but there are few that don't get the point. Gomez and Garcia get stereotyped while Von Miller and Gustafson are considered good, old fashioned American names? Where do people think the names of New Mexico and Los Angeles came from?

I agree. I just moved temporarily to one of the northern states and it would appear that everyone is in the process of or has already left- particularly in the rust belt. Many parts of the South are becoming much more diverse and there are more job opportunities, so the quality of life is better. What has amazed me is the dramatic level of racism I have seen in the North and an unwillingness to accept anyone who has moved into the region- especially in the small towns.

As an ex-long-term Republican, never a Democrat and now an Independent who still believes in the Republican philosophies of “the best government is the least amount of government” and “government should only do for the people that which they can’t do for themselves” but who also recognizes the reality that there are serious responsibilities that go along with those philosophies, not the least of which is “government has to do at least as much as is needed” (like protecting the majority from exploitation by the few), it has become completely clear that today’s challenges and needs aren’t in Republican v Democrat or “conservative” v “liberal” values but rather are in having honest and responsible representation for the majority, which can now only be achieved through real political reform – by getting the “money” out of politics and refocusing the politicians on the people. It would seem inconceivable today for anyone to deny that “money” has completely taken over politics and in doing so, that “the money’s” interests now trump the people’s concerns with the power, influence and money then effectively working to con the people and manipulate public opinion, to literally take the people for granted and to use and abuse them as “pawns”.
The next reality that has to be recognized is that the Republican Party, with their closer ties and greater susceptibility, have become totally owned and controlled by “the money”. Over the last twelve years, first, with Bush-Cheney totally belligerently serving only “the money’s” interests, next, with the Republican Party completely supporting that and then continuing with the same mentality, while putting their political ambitions above all else, at any cost to the people, while intimidating and coercing their own to squelch individual consciences and to even purge their ranks of any “moderates”, and their constantly offering “puppet” candidates committed to performing as their “strings are pulled”, all while the power and influence of “the money” has been constantly active to sway and control the public, it leaves absolutely no doubt. We have seen their successful manipulation with the conservative Christian, the Swift-boat propaganda and the Tea Party movement, all designed, funded and aimed for the same purpose, to excite people’s emotions and to block rational discernment. No where in any of it has there been any value or any real consideration of the people, only self-serving deception; the people can’t fail to see that if they want to solve the problems.
The Democrats aren’t without faults but they could benefit from the current need to solve the real problem. The only way to get “the money” out of politics is to render it ineffective, to firmly reject all of the propaganda by denying it any reception and to completely reject the “puppet” candidates who will say anything but will serve only their “masters”, “the money”. If I had my way you would have to bring your tax return to vote and if you did not pay tax then you don’t get to vote. In Canada, you become a registered voter when and only when you file your taxes. I have no problem with a photo ID being required to vote beginning in 2014 so people have time to get the paperwork together to get that ID. I am originally from Mexico. I came to the U.S. illegally but after 10 years of the application process, I became a legal resident. 5 years later, I became a U.S. Citizen. I know first hand how hard it is to obtain legal residency. While Obama hasn't introduced any type of immigration reform, I much rather take my chance with him, than with Romney who clearly has it out for illegals (like the rest of the GOP). We have to also differentiate Hispanics that have been here for generations and are "Americanized", to those who have been here one or two decades and are now U.S. Citizens' these Hispanics including myself, still have relatives who are trying to obtain residency. They're not going to vote for someone who may jeopardize their relatives chances at becoming legal residents. If Romney thinks that having a running mate that is Hispanic will get him the Presidency, he is dead wrong. The reason why people would even consider amnesty to the illegals is that they mostly ran away from their home country that is being tyrannized by drug cartels, whom mostly gets funded indirectly by the USA. Assuming USA is the place with the most money as they are pretty much "paying" the all-mighty drug cartels, it's simple logic for them to want to come to the US. If US became the next Mexico and Canada the next US, most of you would not care if it's legal or illegal. You would jump the borders at all cost in hopes of giving your kids a better life. So all of you who has 'not-so-nice' things to say about illegals or say 'illegal is illegal,' listen carefully.
The world isn't split in two; it's not white and black. There's all kinds of issues in this world and being legal or illegal should NOT be an issue. First of all, if the person is an illegal, he would have no benefits provided by the feds. Second, he can only take on jobs that none of you would EVER take, so what's the point of arguing that they are stealing your jobs? Do you want to put 5000 chickens in a cage at 3AM in the morning for $3/hr? No, you want a job that preferably pays $20+. Most illegals WON'T get a job like that.
Another reason why better treatment towards illegals is that a lot of them are hard-working... more so than any other Americans I've met. My parent immigrated from Greece, they learned english and taught us english. When I lived in Germany, I learned German and when I got transferred to Italy, I learned Italian. You can make money doing so and even create jobs down south, making lifestyle slowly better for people that live there; therefore less people become illegals.

The issue for citizen latinos is that the anti-immigrant sentiment extends to them even if they are legal. When was the last time the vote actually gave this country a president that accomplished the things he was supposed to. I know that a few pulled metiocre and some have managed to fool a few into thinking they were good, But I can't think of any in recent history that were really effective in the whitehouse. Your expectations are unrealistic. Life is not Hollywood and there is no silver bullet for solving difficult issues piled through the last half century of US history. World is also much different place than one in the movie, no action heroes, historical moves. He also got thrown under the bus when the far right learned that he had signed legislation that allows illegal immigrant children who have graduated from high school to pay in-state tuition for college.

There is no such thing as a race or ethnic group called Hispanic and Latino and there is a growing backlash against using this "fake" group for political gains. Many in this so called group do not favor the Dream Act, are against illegal immigration and view themselves as just regular Americans with the same issues as every other American. In a few years, their numbers will counted by actual racial breakdown which makes more logical sense in this illogical system of keeping tabs on groups. Why can't all Americans just be viewed as caring about the same issues instead of being some made up special interest group?

It is even laughable the way politicians play with Latinos, and how politicians wrongly believe that the Latino support is such as important. President Obama opted for fight for sodomites and lesbians instead of doing something for millions of illegal immigrants. There is no reason at all to expect any change from Obama about this issue, on the contrary, under president Obama the deportation of illegal immigrants has increased much more than in any other previous administration.
Latinos who believe that president Obama will do something for illegal immigrants are leaning on the wrong support, because there is not any. And even worse for the illegal immigrants, the same Latinos who are able to vote, usually want to stop illegal immigration because the illegals take their jobs.
In the past, in Washington DC, it was a director of a Latino community center, who decided to run a a politician because @there were thousands and thousands of Latinos living in the district, but he forgot that most of them were illegals and can't vote, so he lost big, he lost his job as a director of such a center as well.
The Latino vote might provide some push to the results, but it is not such an essential. We can't lean on what Univision or any other Latino TV broadcasting say about the importance of the Latino vote, because ion their news and programs they avoid the use of the word "illegal" and these TV stations and radios try to scare the Latino community with messages that such and such politician is against "immigration", something that is a deceived information given, because no doubt that if any politician -regardless of the political party- is against, it is against ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.
Obama as president must be against ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION and the current deportations in his administration demonstrates this fact. So, immigration has never been an issue but ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION is.
Latinos must become smart and stop listening the lies of Latino broadcasting and newspapers, and vote for the candidate who will take care for better education, economy, and social life, so, they better vote for Mr Romney.

Matdaniel the sodomites and lesbians you talk about are citizens of the United States who whither you agree with their life style or not are being discriminated against. They are simply asking for the same basic rights of other citizens join the army, get married etc.. are not afforded rights under the Family Medical leave act and they are not allowed to sponsor their partner, or their partner’s children for immigration purposes. In some states they can’t even adopt children or have different rules that do not pertain to the rest of the citizens.
As for fighting the fight on immigration how do you expect him to push such legislation? The votes are not there!! Even when the Dems had the Senate and the House the blue-dog democrats would of voted against such legislation. The current economic situation doesn’t allow for such action.
As for being mad at Obama because he is deporting illegals well I’m sorry about that but everyone who has ever come over illegally know’s the consequences of their actions. As for children who have been brought when they were children I believe strongly that they must not be deported. They had no say so on that matter and should be except from deportation.
