A kinder, gentler Ku Klux Klan? 'We do not hate anyone,' imperial wizard says

by Alicia W. Stewart, CNN

(CNN) –“All we wanna do is adopt a highway,” said April Chambers, secretary of the  North Georgia chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. “We're not doing it for publicity. We're doing it to keep the mountains beautiful. People throwing trash out on the side of the road ... that ain't right."

For many Americans, the Ku Klux Klan has been a symbol for terrorism, racism and evil in America, synonymous with burning crosses, lynchings and hooded men.

Even today, the name evokes vociferous discussion about the rights of a local group to adopt a highway in North Georgia, which was recently denied.

Overheard on CNN.com: Reader 'feeling a bit dirty' for agreeing with KKK on litter pickup

But is the latest effort to adopt a highway an introduction of a new era of a kinder, gentler Klan or merely an effort to gain attention? After more than a century and a half, what is the Ku Klux Klan today?

"We're not racists," Chambers told CNN Monday. "We just want to be with white people. If that's a crime, then I don't know. It's all right to be black and Latino and proud, but you can't be white and proud. I don't understand it."

Harley Hanson, who filed the application to adopt the highway for the International Keystone Knights Realm of Georgia, concurred:  “I love my race. Does that make me wrong? I’m proud to be white,” he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Georgia official: KKK won't be allowed to 'adopt' highway

Today, when speaking to leaders of the Klan, you won't hear racial epithets or a denunciation of any ethnic groups.

"We do not hate anyone,” said Frank Ancona, the imperial wizard of the Traditionalist American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. “The true Ku Klux Klan is an organization that is looking out for the interests of the white race. It is a fraternal organization, and we do good works.”

Ancona's words are a contrast to criminal acts historically associated with the Klan - a divergence from intimidating images of hooded figures with lit crosses cutting through a dark night.

"We look out for the interest of our family first, I feel that other races feel the same way - it's a natural instinct, " he adds.

After all, who can argue with anyone about taking care of one's loved ones or cleaning up a national highway?

"These groups are interested in the press they know they are going to get off this - it doesn’t have anything to do with improving the world," said Mark Potok, editor in chief of the Intelligence Report, which tracks hate groups and extremists for the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Potok concludes that it is not a kinder, gentler Ku Klux Klan but merely a sign of the times.

“Even the Klan recognizes there is no way that they can recreate America as an all-white country,” he said.

The group began as a fraternal organization, founded by Confederate veterans after the Civil War. At its height, Ku Klux Klan members were politicians, advertising gurus, journalists, businessmen and women with powerful political and social influence.  In the 1920s, membership swelled to 4 million to 5  million, fueled in part by the popularity of  "A Birth of a Nation," a 1915 silent film that extolled the virtues of the Klan.  The civil rights era witnessed a resurgence of the group, and it still exists today with 4,000 to  5,000 members nationally.

"I wonder why they characterize us as a hate group? Who do we hate?"  Ancona said. "I know what the perception is; people come up to us and they hate us."

When speaking to him via phone, Ancona insists that there is a not a "rebranding" of the KKK.  Instead, there is a focus on the original values of the Klan that have been distorted by "rogue" members and a mischaracterization by media.

"We are doing all we can to dispel the negative images," said Ancona. "If we find out one of our members was charged with a crime, or immoral behavior, we might give them a warning first, but we try to keep a tight eye on that. We have a thorough screening process to weed out troublemakers. I can only speak for the Traditional Knights, but none of our members are criminals."

Ancona sends out Twitter messages, has a modest following and speaks earnestly about the traditions of the Klan.  He speaks with special conviction when talking about the standard by which he strives to live.

"Jesus Christ is our criteria of character. If you look at Romans 12:1-2,  that is how Klans are  supposed to live, that is the standard, " he explained. "We do not burn the cross, we light the cross to show that Christ is the light of the world."

When pressed for how historical killings intersect with with Christian teachings of loving one another, he answers that the criticism the group faces is similar to the contempt directed at his example.

"We do this even though we know we will be hated and scorned, we sacrifice and serve for what's right - to uphold the principle that were taught by Jesus Christ of Nazareth and ensure that we give our children and their grandchildren America we had."

An independent contractor, Ancona says he is not paid for his work leading the Midwest chapter. He does the work "because I feel that I am doing something good for my fellow man."

He believes there is nothing hateful in the Klan bylaws and contends that while the organization has had  "a dark past," it is not dissimilar to that of the action of some priests actions in the Catholic Church  or a producer cutting misleading clips in on a story about George Zimmerman: you don't judge the whole for a few bad parts.

"I would want people to know that we are here, and we are not to be feared. The Klan is looking out for the white race, to preserve our rights and our history. The Klan looks out for America as our forefathers did."

Mark Pitcavage, the director of investigative research for the Anti-Defamation League, characterizes Ancona's group as "sort of the big dog" of the Ku Klux Klan now.

Pitcavage is a former military historian who began researching militia minutemen and later right-wing extremism.  He characterizes the  Klan as "group of hard-core white supremacists that are motivated by a belief that the white race is in danger of extinction."

He says white supremacy is composed of  five main movements: Neo-Nazis, traditional white supremacist groups, racist skinheads, racist prison gangs and Christian Identity, whose religious adherents believe they are descended from lost tribes of Israel.

The current Klan is not one cohesive group, and is considered one of the traditional white supremacist groups, which emerged in the the civil rights era.

"The situation that existed in the 1950s and '60s simply does not exist. The white supremacists are no longer in charge. They are now fighting for the very survival of the white race, and they have to fight to protect," said Pitcavage. "This is a fundamental difference of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1950s and today in the 21st century.”

In the past 60 years, several chapters of the Klan have made efforts to be involved in more civic-minded projects, such as adopting highways.

The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan - the Arkansas group that David Duke once led - tried doing it. There was also a group in Missouri  that won a lawsuit to adopt a highway, and most recently, the North Georgia group that was denied the permit.

If you're TRULY Christian, than you know that having pride of one race is scriptural...If Jehovah God is not partial, than how is it that man is partial? Be proud ofkids good grades, or that you're fortunate to have employment...Those are good things to be proud of...but not of one race over another...Thin about that!

The KKK adopted a highway in Arkansas in the late 1990's, just trying to create another story out of nothing...must be a slow news day since they're trying to portray these haters in a positve light.

This entire "adopt a highway" BS is simply a way for the KKK to get some attention. If they were actually allowed to do it, it would make them seem more "mainstream" and less of the threat they actually are. When the KKK makes requests like this, media should simply ignore them. No attention at all whatsoever.

It's evident from these posts that America has become one mean-spirited place to live. Seems everyone is angry. The example is set by our representatives in Congress. They accomplish NOTHING because it's always "my way or nothing". We must vote these people out of office and elect representatives who are willing to compromise. Not ones who sign pledges to follow the dictates of a rich, influential person. The only pledge a representative should honor is to be a fair voice for his electorate.

Those freedoms are taken advantage of by ALL of the hate groups. Not just the "white" ones. When you start down the road of cutting off the rights, you start to become a "nazi nation" rather than just having "nazis" within the free nation. There is a difference.

I suppose then you would prefer that the government tell you what is and is not correct speech. Would you also like them to tell you what to believe? Perhaps what political ideaology you have to have?

Remember that there was a time when the opinion of the KKK was held by a majority. That opinion could not have shifted without the protection of free speech. And yes, I realize that protection wasn't always fairly applied.

Freedom of expression and speech requires a maturity and wisdom on the part of the populace it seems that has rapidly dissapeared.

I wouldn't want to join the Klu Klux Klan but the truth is unless a member(s) is doing something specifically against the law they should have a right to express themselves...no matter how dubious or questionable what they express is.

When we start 'regulating' what some see as hateful speech and expression, that just invites a cycle of people who hate those that 'they' imagine are hateful, while displaying a similar brand of rancor and emnity in that dislike as they purport those they dislike are.

If hate thought, expression, and speech become illegal over half the people who comment against organizations like the clan would be just as guilty of hate inspired behavoir.

The KKK is responsible for more terror related deaths and injuries in the US than al Queda. Would you say the same if this was Al Queda trying to adopt a highway, no. I understand the essence of your post, but the reality is that this is a terrorist organization, and should be treated as such. You can't divorce yourself from history by trying to adopt a highway, no way. They have a lot of blood on their hands.

Ah the old "Terrorist Organization" argument...George Washington and Company were considered a terrorist organization by the British incidently...hover most Americans don't even know the definition of Terrorist, or Terrorism: To use fear for a political purpose...

Yet the truth is I don't fear the Klu Klux Klan, conversely I don't fear the Black Panthers or El Queda either, fears are imagined, so if you imagine you are scared of something or someone you can in fact make arguments based on terrorism, but who is really doing the terrorizing is yourself, to yourself.

In fact because terrorism is a political tool that relies on instilling fear in the targeted group, the minute they stop being afraid makes the whole exercise one in futility...stop being afraid doesn't by the way mean go on attack and attempt to dominate and make them fear you...it just means stop being afraid.

The only one terrorizing you is you!

His words were filled with bigotry and hate. This organization has been around for years terrorizing individuals because they did not have the same beliefs and ideals as they had. It is crazy that this type of organization still exists in this day and time. Although it is not that big of a shock, just look at the tea party. They openly spew hate and racial antics daily. I honestly believe the tea party would not exist had we not elected a black president. I will go on to say that I would not be surprised if the KKK is not behind them or the creators of the tea party. Anything is possible these days, I would not put it pass them.

I would argue that any group any time has a right to celebrate themselves. As long as they are not impinging on the rights of others. What I would argue is that there is a 'white race' core of traditional values/beliefs what have you. That is nonsense. There are white people from Ireland, or England, or Sweden, or Norway, or South Africa, or South America. It is silly to think that there are a traditional set of belies or values among these people just because of their racial genetics. The same thing can be said for latinos. The real problem with african americans is that they were mostly robbed of the chance of having that heritage, by force. Now, a lot of immigrants had to give up their heritage and assimilate, such as Italians and Irish, but this is categorically different than being kidnapped and shipped across the Atlantic Ocean. So what we have is a nation of people who largely do not know where they came from. And then were persecuted for one of the obvious things they had in common: the color of their skin. Feeling that the color of their skin was a stupid way to judge character, they united under this banner. Its a complex cause and effect so you cannot say the NAACP is the same as the KKK. Now the latino organizations have similar goals but their foundation probably would never have happened without the model that african american organizations used that was engendered by deep racism early in american history.

come on, thats a gross generalization intended to pit races against each other. If we can all stipulate that the KKK is a racist group we can move on to the heart of the argument which is: should they be given the chance to gain some legitimacy and move away from their extremist past? Frankly I'm very skeptical, and the comparisons to the NAACP and the ACLU are disingenuous. These are groups formed to represent and advocate for the disenfranchised. The KKK was never that. Could you argue that today or in 50-100 years that the white race might need something like this? You could try, but where you end up usually has a lot to do with where you start. And in the hundreds of years that white people have had a leg up, its hard to argue that now help is needed to bring equity to the white race.

If you've overcome the stereotype and racism lobbed at you because of the color of your skin, then yes, you have a right to be proud. If you've never experienced racism BASED ON THE COLOR OF YOUR SKIN, then no you have no right to be proud of your skin color. That's what it is about. It has nothing to do with skin color, until a bigot makes it so.

Hate groups and such are not a "black and white" issue. People are grouped and hated and made fun of for much more than the color of thier skin. Look at West Virginians. They are the single most made fu of group in the United States of America. "Blacks" are FAR from the first or only group to be "hated" this way and in the United States of America, they are the single largest group that is guilty of hating people because of the color of skin or culture or any other reason. that is determined by birth.

The Black Panthers came into being BECAUSE OF WHAT BLACKS INCURRED, while the klan was started by a bunch of hate mongers who didn't want to the black people to be treated any other way than slaves. If there were no racism, the Black Panthers would have never been born in the first place.

The "white power" groups are now in the minority. The much more violent "black power", "hispanic power" and so forth groups are a much more dangerous threat to lives and property.
To be honest, ANY group that promotes such division of peoples (regardless of race) is on a slippery slope. when you start to exclude peoplw based on something such as color, eye color hair color, whatever, you open the door to further "options" of exclusion until the group "hates" everyone and kills itself off through inbreeding. The KKK have fought thier way towards being much more open minded and "nice" than they were 100 years ago but it would not take a very large push to send them back down the slope again.

Today's KKK can not be separated from their history of hatred, violence, intimidation and murder. The seemingly innocuousness question "Just because I'm white, I can't stick with my own group?" tries to position the KKK as underdog, or even victim. In my personal experience I have never had any trouble hanging with other whites. No matter how you look at it, the supposed question is manipulative. So, if they want to stick together, they can. If they want to pick up trash, fine. But to intentionally associate the best of American values with the worst, and have the taxpayers pay for signs advertising same is unacceptable.
People have all but forgotten about being proud of what's on the inside.

The "reason" for a hate group does not make it any less a hate group. It also does not justify the killings and violence the hate group does. Two wrongs do not make a right.
By the way, if you want to look at it from a pure calander viewpoint of "which came first, the chicken or the egg", you can look in African history to see that they had "anti-white hate groups" long before there were any "white, anti-black" hate groups. However, it is not about the timing, it is about the actions and ideals espoused by the hate groups that "matter".

What then happens to the "non white people" whom decides to move into your neighborhood where you so enjoyed "being with white people". His own statement means he's in support of segregation. Being proud of your race is totally different from not wanting to mingle with other race. Not wanting to mingle with other race leads to segregation and discrimination, which brings us back to lynching and cross burning.

If the program is run by the state, they have no right to refuse a particular organization because most disagree with them.

I am not for the KKK but do agree that there is a lot of racism that specific groups and clubs have against whites as well, and no one questions them. And the Masons don't exactly have clean hands.

Either ban them as hate speech, or let them participate in society. Somehow "Proud to Be White" is offensive but "Proud to Be Black" is not?

    (I'm multiracial by the way..)

Multi-racial? Well I'm sure part of you is not black or you would never see it the Klan's way – never. Blacks have a very unfortunate history in America. White people have had all the privilege and rights by just being born white in this country. Blacks had to fight and die for rights. Nice try at attempting to compare the two. But the plight of black americans is uncomparable to white americans.

Well I'm black and as a black person I think it's wrong and stupid for people to judge a white person as racist who says "I'm Proud to Be White" but a black person who says "I'm Proud to be Black:" is ok. If the white person isn't harming anyone then they should be allowed to be proud of who they are. Not every single proud white person is going around killing non-whites.

    @KKK and others like them.

Is it possible to be proud of your race without hating other races?
