A kinder, gentler Ku Klux Klan? 'We do not hate anyone,' imperial wizard says

by Alicia W. Stewart, CNN

(CNN) –“All we wanna do is adopt a highway,” said April Chambers, secretary of the  North Georgia chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. “We're not doing it for publicity. We're doing it to keep the mountains beautiful. People throwing trash out on the side of the road ... that ain't right."

For many Americans, the Ku Klux Klan has been a symbol for terrorism, racism and evil in America, synonymous with burning crosses, lynchings and hooded men.

Even today, the name evokes vociferous discussion about the rights of a local group to adopt a highway in North Georgia, which was recently denied.

Overheard on CNN.com: Reader 'feeling a bit dirty' for agreeing with KKK on litter pickup

But is the latest effort to adopt a highway an introduction of a new era of a kinder, gentler Klan or merely an effort to gain attention? After more than a century and a half, what is the Ku Klux Klan today?

"We're not racists," Chambers told CNN Monday. "We just want to be with white people. If that's a crime, then I don't know. It's all right to be black and Latino and proud, but you can't be white and proud. I don't understand it."

Harley Hanson, who filed the application to adopt the highway for the International Keystone Knights Realm of Georgia, concurred:  “I love my race. Does that make me wrong? I’m proud to be white,” he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Georgia official: KKK won't be allowed to 'adopt' highway

Today, when speaking to leaders of the Klan, you won't hear racial epithets or a denunciation of any ethnic groups.

"We do not hate anyone,” said Frank Ancona, the imperial wizard of the Traditionalist American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. “The true Ku Klux Klan is an organization that is looking out for the interests of the white race. It is a fraternal organization, and we do good works.”

Ancona's words are a contrast to criminal acts historically associated with the Klan - a divergence from intimidating images of hooded figures with lit crosses cutting through a dark night.

"We look out for the interest of our family first, I feel that other races feel the same way - it's a natural instinct, " he adds.

After all, who can argue with anyone about taking care of one's loved ones or cleaning up a national highway?

"These groups are interested in the press they know they are going to get off this - it doesn’t have anything to do with improving the world," said Mark Potok, editor in chief of the Intelligence Report, which tracks hate groups and extremists for the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Potok concludes that it is not a kinder, gentler Ku Klux Klan but merely a sign of the times.

“Even the Klan recognizes there is no way that they can recreate America as an all-white country,” he said.

The group began as a fraternal organization, founded by Confederate veterans after the Civil War. At its height, Ku Klux Klan members were politicians, advertising gurus, journalists, businessmen and women with powerful political and social influence.  In the 1920s, membership swelled to 4 million to 5  million, fueled in part by the popularity of  "A Birth of a Nation," a 1915 silent film that extolled the virtues of the Klan.  The civil rights era witnessed a resurgence of the group, and it still exists today with 4,000 to  5,000 members nationally.

"I wonder why they characterize us as a hate group? Who do we hate?"  Ancona said. "I know what the perception is; people come up to us and they hate us."

When speaking to him via phone, Ancona insists that there is a not a "rebranding" of the KKK.  Instead, there is a focus on the original values of the Klan that have been distorted by "rogue" members and a mischaracterization by media.

"We are doing all we can to dispel the negative images," said Ancona. "If we find out one of our members was charged with a crime, or immoral behavior, we might give them a warning first, but we try to keep a tight eye on that. We have a thorough screening process to weed out troublemakers. I can only speak for the Traditional Knights, but none of our members are criminals."

Ancona sends out Twitter messages, has a modest following and speaks earnestly about the traditions of the Klan.  He speaks with special conviction when talking about the standard by which he strives to live.

"Jesus Christ is our criteria of character. If you look at Romans 12:1-2,  that is how Klans are  supposed to live, that is the standard, " he explained. "We do not burn the cross, we light the cross to show that Christ is the light of the world."

When pressed for how historical killings intersect with with Christian teachings of loving one another, he answers that the criticism the group faces is similar to the contempt directed at his example.

"We do this even though we know we will be hated and scorned, we sacrifice and serve for what's right - to uphold the principle that were taught by Jesus Christ of Nazareth and ensure that we give our children and their grandchildren America we had."

An independent contractor, Ancona says he is not paid for his work leading the Midwest chapter. He does the work "because I feel that I am doing something good for my fellow man."

He believes there is nothing hateful in the Klan bylaws and contends that while the organization has had  "a dark past," it is not dissimilar to that of the action of some priests actions in the Catholic Church  or a producer cutting misleading clips in on a story about George Zimmerman: you don't judge the whole for a few bad parts.

"I would want people to know that we are here, and we are not to be feared. The Klan is looking out for the white race, to preserve our rights and our history. The Klan looks out for America as our forefathers did."

Mark Pitcavage, the director of investigative research for the Anti-Defamation League, characterizes Ancona's group as "sort of the big dog" of the Ku Klux Klan now.

Pitcavage is a former military historian who began researching militia minutemen and later right-wing extremism.  He characterizes the  Klan as "group of hard-core white supremacists that are motivated by a belief that the white race is in danger of extinction."

He says white supremacy is composed of  five main movements: Neo-Nazis, traditional white supremacist groups, racist skinheads, racist prison gangs and Christian Identity, whose religious adherents believe they are descended from lost tribes of Israel.

The current Klan is not one cohesive group, and is considered one of the traditional white supremacist groups, which emerged in the the civil rights era.

"The situation that existed in the 1950s and '60s simply does not exist. The white supremacists are no longer in charge. They are now fighting for the very survival of the white race, and they have to fight to protect," said Pitcavage. "This is a fundamental difference of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1950s and today in the 21st century.”

In the past 60 years, several chapters of the Klan have made efforts to be involved in more civic-minded projects, such as adopting highways.

The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan - the Arkansas group that David Duke once led - tried doing it. There was also a group in Missouri  that won a lawsuit to adopt a highway, and most recently, the North Georgia group that was denied the permit.

careful with that. It took alot of people being burnt alive to get the pagans to deny their own ancestors and accept an alien faith. Estimates put the death toll between 13-35 million in europe with the children of the non conformers being put into convents and or sold as slaves to build those castles and cathedrals.

True, that the Dem party was once the party of slavery and against civil rights and fair treatment for all citizens....long, long ago. That dynamic has COMPLETELY 180-degree switched, and today's republican party has become the party of hatred and exclusion, while the dem party has become the party of social justice and equal rights. For most of OUR lifetimes, the repub party has been the only party embracing virulent racism as a key part of it's base.

The American Nazi party, Rosa Parks adopted highways. The KKK adopted Interstate 55 just south of St. Louis. So, what is the difference? Why can't they adopt now?

Because they represent hate and have no place in society. Thats why most members today are uneducated poor whites who's only fall back is that they are white and 'deserve better' – they have achieved little so their race is all they have left to hang onto. No educated successful person would waste their time with such a group. THis isn't 1920 anylonger – the world has evolved

      Lies and distractions!!!

It's simply normal for the klan to begin to rumble, they have rumbled roared within the republican party, they have supported and strategized with the conservative leaderhip. They have a common foe, a black president, a Democratice supposedly socialistic unfit, unintelligent lower mammal, who is unable to lead. Theyre message is completely echoed in the sentiment of conservative voices, and these voices are growing even amongst some democrats. you could call this with braille, and they are going to grow in america once again. Illegal immigration is a catalyst, and if Obama wins in the fall, watch those rolls grow like crazy.

Nicer, gentler, kinder KKK, please!! dont make me laugh any more than I already am!!

      some statistics

79% or the poeple in america are white, 12% black, 4.4 asian, 1.0 american indian, 15.2 hispanic, .18 hawaiian and 1.7 multiracial

of these populations, the prison population in relation to black and white are as follows:
52% of all crimes are commited by blacks, the rest are broken up between hispanic and white and asian.

      the interesting:
49% of all murderes in america are committed by white people and 86% of those murderes are white on white murderes

94% of all murders committed by blacks are black on black murders

More whites are killing people outside of thier race than blacks, only a difference of 8%

but more telling, nearly all slayings by blacks are on blacks and they only make up 12% of the population.
When it comes to crime, each racial population needs to concentrate on measures to fix this. Due to a cultural difference of approach, you obviously cant use measures that work in traditional white communities in black communities and expect them to work because they dont influence the same way, and vise versa. IMHO

No, they're nearly always very poor, and have been taught to blame that on some "other", some sort of mud people whether that be hispanics, blacks, jews, or anyone else not what they see as the whites being superior as the natural order of things. (Amazing, since the jews are named as Gods' chosen people and Jesus himself was "King of the Jews" yet they somehow hate on them and still claim biblical backing! I wonder if they burn....sorry..."light" crosses to remind them that this is how jews like Jesus are to be honored and remembered...) They do not look at the powers-that-be, all white folks with skin JUST LIKE THEIRS AND MINE, on Wall Street and in the financial sector, that have actually robbed us of our opportunity to find success as a nation and kept them impoverished as well.

Given our shifting demographics, there may well come a time in the near future when white Americans need advocacy groups as much as any other group of people in the U.S. If and when that day comes, however, the KKK is not the organization to fill that role. The only reason they are "kinder and gentler" now is because they've started to realize that even other white people like me despise them. Make no mistake about it: if these "people" had the power to do so, they would commit genocide against every single minority in America.

Yeah, these guys can talk a good game on the surface, but scratch that surface and the ugly hatred is all still there... why else would someone even join a hate group as notorious as the KKK, if not for hate? (Remember David Duke? He sounded almost reasonable until pressed, at which time his claimed pride in his heritage revealed itself in his belief in white SUPERIORITY. I'm white. Guess what, white haters... we're about to be outnumbered in this country, and that's not gonna change, so we'd better figure out how to get along!!! Yes. The conservative Southern Democrats left the party after the Civil Rights Act vote, most notably led by Strom Thurmond who had famously filibusters the legislation.

        June 13, 2012 at 11:13 am | Report abuse |
    • Matt

      Completely false. There were many
more Democrats in congress at the time, and their votes were required to
achieve passage. More Democrats voted for the Civil Rights Act than Republicans did in each chamber, although a higher percentage of Republicans voted for it than did Democrats. But the vote was more so split by region – Republicans and Democrats in the South voted against it while Republicans and Democrats in the North voted for it. This vote was the cause of the remaining Southern Democrats to switch to the Republican party.

Civil Rights Act Vote By party
      The original House version:
      Democratic Party: 152–96   (61–39%)
      Republican Party: 138–34   (80–20%)
      Cloture in the Senate:
      Democratic Party: 44–23   (66–34%)
      Republican Party: 27–6   (82–18%)
      The Senate version:
      Democratic Party: 46–21   (69–31%)
      Republican Party: 27–6   (82–18%)
The Senate version, voted on by the House:
      Democratic Party: 153–91   (63–37%)
      Republican Party: 136–35   (80–20%)

      By party and region

      The original House version:
      Southern Democrats: 7–87   (7–93%)
      Southern Republicans: 0–10   (0–100%)
      Northern Democrats: 145–9   (94–6%)
      Northern Republicans: 138–24   (85–15%)
      The Senate version:
      Southern Democrats: 1–20   (5–95%)
      Southern Republicans: 0–1   (0–100%)
      Northern Democrats: 45–1   (98–2%)

As a white guy, I'm offended that CNN would give the KKK an uncritical platform with top-story billing, to air what they PRETEND are their new hate-free views. A hate group as notorious as the KKK, still maintaining that their continuing cross-burnings are actually "lightings" to glorify the God they claim to have legitimacy from after their burning crosses has been universally recognized as violent racist oppression, is beyond the pale and CNN stokes the fires of racism by doing so.

There are so many layers of racism in the US that any individual can always point to someone else and say "He's a racist, not me". I think that's the real danger of the KKK in today's context. Its continued existence allows right-wing republicans and tea partiers the cover to say "they are the racists, not us" even as they work to pass state laws dienfranchising minorities (eg. Florida's new poll tax) and allowing themselves to kill minorities with impunity (eg. Florida's stand your ground law).

I never thought I'd say this..but I do agree with what he's saying about whites becoming a minority- because we are, and we are facing more and more discrimination everyday. Being white today means having to apologize for the actions of people, not even necessarily related to us, that lived over 100 years ago. My mom was best friends with an African American woman when she started working as a nurse- and I was friends with her daughter. I spent a good deal of time with their family, more than I did my own. My mom's friend helped raise me. I have never owned a slave, or forced a person of another race to sit at the back of a bus or use a different bathroom than myself. If anything, I have felt discrimination coming from the other way. When I first went to college, I was put in a dorm room with 2 African American girls. They were best friends- and did everything they could to make me miserable because they didn't want to room with a white girl- I know this because that's what they told the college. Could you imagine if someone started a NAAWP-there would be riots-because white people standing up for THEIR rights is racist, right?

I am proud to be white. how ever I will say I am not so insecure as to need a White group to join to make me feel good about who I am. I have always felt that these minorities groups are ridiculous. People regardless of there race should just be proud of who they are. There is not a need for Black power, White power, Brown pride etc.... It should be American Power and that should be our mantra and our group. We are one powerful nation because we have the best and brightest in this country. We do not prop up one group above the other when it comes to race.

@McCoy, there is nothing wrong with being proud of your particular race, but when you turn being proud into violence against other races just because they are not the same as you, that is what people have a problem with. You can't spend decades going around murdering, hanging, and burning people's homes for not reason other than the fact that they look different. The KKK murdered many innocent people for years just because they weren't white and that stigma will always be with them no matter what they say or do.

The difference between the KKK and the Black Panthers? The Black Pantthers arose out of anger at having been persecuted for over 400 years at the hands of white slavemasters (among others). The KKK arose out of a **falsely perceived** notion that they were being persecuted for being white.

The reason 'proud to be white' is different than 'proud to be hispanic/black/etc.: "Proud to be hispanic/black/etc." is a revolt against the power structure, a claim of equality against those who would (and do) claim their group is inferior. It is an assertion that no matter the odds, we are proud to embrace our heritage and race in spite of those who would have us assimilate into 'white culture' and have our culture disappear.

The white culture is the culture trying to make the other cultures disappear, whether overtly by action, or covertly by peer pressure to assimilate and not assert those cultural differences. The white culture is already in power – there is nothing to rail against. Claiming 'white pride' is like... filing an insurance claim when you have not suffered any loss. I think that analogy fits.

I'm sorry, which race has been represented in power almost exclusively in this country and elsewhere? There hasn't been the history of oppression and hatred against us whites as against others. Hitler did not try to eliminate the "white people". White people were not experimented on in the 20th century. White people weren't made to sit in the back of the bus and forced into underfunded schools. I can understand the position, to some extent, that the world would be a better place if we did not need those groups but up until the late 20th century it was still illegal for blacks to marry whites in certain states. These laws were passed by white people of course and I have no doubt that the "modern" KKK wishes that these laws were still in place. BTW, I am white and I am proud but I also have an understanding of the dynamics of history. Here's another case in point...When my former boss suspected that a black employee had stolen 20 dollars out of the till she commented "that's the last time I let one of them work in my store..." A sentiment she did not have when 2 white employees were caught defrauding customers out of hundreds of dollars.

The difference is actually quite simple. Black and Latino do not refer to a color. When someone says black and proud or Latino and proud they are referring to their history and heritage. White and proud IS a reference to a color. A color that has historically controlled the power balance since America's inception. "White and proud" also brings forth a historical connotation that implies or states that all other colors except white should be eliminated.

It's averaging two a day and up 34% over last year. I know that. And the NAACP and various other black organizations put out bounties on Zimmerman, remain silent when whites or Hispanics or Asians are beaten t death by mobs, women raped, entire families on vacation making a wrong turn exterminated. I hold no hate for the KKK if they are indeed a peaceful advocacy group. And it's true, just like any group has its fringes, African American groups have their fringes as well. I'm all for the NAACP, as a peaceful advocacy group; so how can I be against a peaceful advocacy group that supports white people? It would be a double-standard. Supposing the Black Panthers came back as a reformed peaceful advocacy group for blacks... would that be wrong? A few fringe elements is all it takes to rile people up into a frenzy of hate and intolerance (modern day politics for example).

....doesn't sound like they learned anything from it.

That is a pretty broad statement. Certainly whites have been the objects of hatred and racism where they exist as a minority. However, we haven't been systematically abused and oppressed as we have done to others in the past. There is no parallel to the Tuskegee syphilis experiment where impoverished blacks were denied proper medical care for their condition simply to see what would happen if the disease was untreated.

I also disagree, Sam. White women know what it is like. We've had to put up with injustices and discrimination because of our gender for thousands of years. In some countries and even some homes in the US, women are not people but property so there are some white people who understand.

I disagree about that part that whites have not been victims of hate crimes because I myself was jumped by a black gang, robbed, held at gun point, and left with a broken jaw while coming out of a 7'11 after buying some cigarettes. A week later the police told me they attacked me because I was white. I'm not racist even after that, but I would most certainly commit a "hate crime" if I ever saw one of those guys again.

Maybe not in the same way, but I've been threatened and intimidated multiple times by large groups of black folks and I am quite sure it wasn't because I was a threat to them. Besides, empathy doesn't come from first-hand experience. I've never been shot but I can certainly empathize with someone who has.

Fighting hate with hate will get you nowhere. The problem with climbing up to a better life is that the people we are leaving behind act like crabs in a bucket – they pull us back down whenever we get close to escape. Unfortunately the black community has nearly perfected this behavior.

If you can't move past the hatred, if WE can't move past the hatred as a people, the cycle of hatred is doomed to repeat itself. It's not about the "white man" holding you down; it's about you holding yourself down with blind hatred. You have to step back, examine your life and say, "why am I where I am?" I grew up on a predominately black neighborhood in the projects, graduated high school, and joined the military (mom couldn't afford college and I didn't want a huge amount of debt), and now I'm a successful middle-class citizen, actively working on a college degree. The difference is that I believed in my own destiny and didn't allow the hatred around me to bring me down.

I didn't say whites are not hated or experience hate; what I said was that today there are laws to turn to if you have experienced anything as did blacks. They had NOWHERE to turn to, the law was not on their side as they were hated, beat, spit on etc., simply for the color of their skin
