Asians, more than Latinos, are largest group of new arrivals in U.S.

By Moni Basu, CNN

(CNN) –The immigration debate often centers on stemming the flow of people entering the United States illegally and what to do about securing borders to the south. But here's a fact that goes without much attention: Asians have now taken over Latinos as the largest group of new arrivals every year.

In 2010, 36% of new immigrants were Asians compared to 31% for Hispanics, according to a report released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center.

That's a significant change from a decade ago, when 19% of immigrants were Asians and 59% were Hispanics.

"They were already a significant part of the immigration story. It seems like in the last few years they are the most important part of the immigration story," said Karthick Ramakrishnan, a political scientist at the University of California at Riverside, and expert on Asian-American immigration and civic participation.

He said that if the trends continue, Asian-Americans will play greater roles in shaping American society and perhaps, more significantly in an election year, they will have an impact at the polls.

"This is an important moment to see immigration for what it is - that it is far more complicated and diverse than deporting illegal immigrants," Ramakrishnan said, referring to discussion sparked by President Barack Obama's policy shift last week to spare some children of illegal immigrants from deportation.

Far fewer Asian Americans enter the United States illegally than do Hispanics. The Pew survey looked at recent arrivals of people with both legal and unauthorized status, as well as those arriving with work, student or other temporary visas.

Pew's exhaustive new report on Asian-Americans found important differences between Asian-Americans and other population groups in America. It also shed light on the diversity among Asian-Americans, who sometimes cringe at the broadness of the category that covers every country of origin from Afghanistan to South Korea.

The Pew survey showed that across the board, Asian-Americans are more satisfied than any other Americans with their lives, finances and direction of the country.

They also place more value on traditional marriage, family and parenthood and usually possess a strong work ethic.

Nearly seven in 10 respondents said people could get ahead if they are willing to work hard. And 93% of Asian-Americans describe people of their origin as "very hard-working," whereas only 57% said the same about Americans as a whole.

Asian-Americans also attain college degrees (61%) at about double the rate of recent non-Asian immigrants (30%), Pew found.

"The overall picture that you get from this survey is that like immigrants throughout American history, Asian-Americans are strivers," said Pew’s Paul Taylor, who edited the study.

"But what's interesting about them are the educational credentials.” He said. “By far they are the best educated in American history."

It's not that Asian-Americans value education more.

"Everyone values education," Ramakrishnan said. "But the difference is in the sacrifices Asian-Americans are willing to make."

He said his department’s research has found instances where Asian families in Southern California will move into a much smaller house in order to move to the best school districts.

However, some Asian-Americans recognize that they may go overboard in stressing hard work.

Nearly 39% in the Pew survey said Asian-American parents put too much pressure on their children to do well in school. Think "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother," the provocative memoir by Yale Law Professor Amy Chua that sparked conversation about strict parenting.

Pew recognized the vast differences between the nationalities lumped under the U.S. Census Bureau category of Asian-American - the six major countries are China, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Vietnam and India.

New citizens: Why did you become an American?

Indian-Americans lead other groups in terms of income and education.

Seven in 10 Indian-American adults ages 25 and older have a college degree, compared with about half of Americans of Korean, Chinese, Filipino and Japanese ancestry, and about a quarter of Vietnamese-Americans.

Ramakrishnan attributed that largely to the fact that the Indians coming to America are the cream of the crop. They also have very high proficiency levels in English because of a history of British colonialism.

As a whole, Pew found Asian median income and household wealth exceeded average Americans.

Asian median annual household income is $66,000 versus $49,800 for all Americans.

Asians who came to this country are more likely than their compatriots back home to say their standard of living is better than that of their parents at the same stage of life.

But there are differences on the socioeconomic ladder.

Americans with Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese and “other U.S. Asian” origins have a higher poverty rate than does the general public, while Pew found that those with Indian, Japanese and Filipino origins have lower rates.

There were other factors that made the groups distinct.

The survey noted that Indian-Americans stand out in the personal importance they place on parenting - 78% of them said being a good parent is one of the most important things to them personally.

Korean-Americans are the most likely to say discrimination against their group is a major problem, and they are the least likely to say that their group gets along very well with other racial and ethnic groups.

In contrast, Filipinos are the most positive on interethnic and interracial relations in America.

The Vietnamese are the only major subgroup who arrived on American shores as political refugees; the others say they have come mostly for economic, educational and family reasons.

Ramakrishnan said the Vietnamese were also the only subgroup that tended to vote Republican but that is changing given anti-immigration positions and other exclusionary measures supported by some GOP lawmakers.

The American dream began later for Asian-Americans than other immigrant groups because of racial discrimination.

It was not until 1965, during the height of the civil rights movement and robust economic growth, that the United States opened its doors to immigration from all parts of the world.

The decision paved the way for Asian-Americans to grow from less than 1% of the population more than 40 years ago to nearly 6% now.

Persisting prejudice against Asians led to many communities developing in their own enclaves, Taylor said. Hence the blossoming of Chinatowns, Japantowns and Koreatowns.

But now Asian-Americans are more likely to live in mixed neighborhoods and marry out of their race.

"When newly minted medical school graduate Priscilla Chan married Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg last month, she joined the 37% of all recent Asian-American brides who wed a non-Asian groom," the Pew report said.

Between 2008 and 2010, 29% of all Asian newlyweds married someone of a different race, compared with 26% of Hispanics, 17% of blacks and 9% of whites.

Among them, Japanese had the highest rate of intermarriage and Indians had the lowest, Pew said. More than half of recent Japanese newlyweds married a non-Asian; among recent Indian newlyweds, one in eight did.

Another big distinction was with single parenthood. Forty-one percent of all American parents are single parents. Among Asians, that number plummets to 16 % and among Indians, it's 2% to 3%.

Pew spoke with 3,511 Asian-Americans between January 3 and March 27. The telephone interviews were conducted in English and seven Asian languages.

Ramakrishnan said the Asian-American population, unnoticed before in many spheres of American life, would only continue to increase its share of the spotlight.

In swing states like Virginia and Nevada, where census data now shows Asians make up 9% of the population, Asian-Americans will make a mark at the ballot box in November, Ramakrishnan predicted. Most tend to vote Democratic.

"Republicans should be wary," he said.

At the very least, Taylor said the robust Asian-American immigration is sure to redefine the debate over people coming to these shores.

"Illegal immigration has been a driver of the immigration policy debate and illegal immigration has been primarily associated with Hispanics," he said.

But now, he said, the discussion may be forced to keep up with immigration realities.

We ARE qualified, and the reason we lose jobs to Asians is exactly in what you said – "Asian are hardworking bright poeple who are willing to sacrifice" – YES, they are willing to sacrifice normal salaries for low pay in order to grab the jobs from us. Besides, it's not much of a sacrifice since the lower pay is much more than what they are used to where they came from.

now we can talk about immigrants taking American jobs. Mexicans were coming here to work in the fields. these Asians are not. They are mostly college educated and are taking high paying American jobs. good job, I guess

First off many of the educated asians are citizens of the US. Their parents moved here for their children to have a better life. (Isn't that the American Dream?)

Second, if there were fewer white guys doing "poli-sci" and fewer white girls studying "psychology" then your argument would be valid.

I am an Asian-American living in California. I see the Hispanic immigrants working the farm fields on Saturdays on my way to play golf and I am grateful that they are willing to do the hard work to feed us. Most of you have no clue as to the contribution "Mexicans" make to our economy. Yes, many are on welfare but without their work, our country would "tank".

I am AA too, and respect the work ethic of the migrant workers. But the discussion is are they here illegally? I have no problem with people working in the fields or in tech jobs if they are here legally and went through the same process my family did.

    >> The writer says: It's not that Asian-Americans value education more. "Everyone values education," Ramakrishnan said. "But the difference is in the sacrifices Asian-Americans are willing to make."

Um . . . that would be valuing education more, more than say, gee I don't know, standing around on the corner drinking beer with their homies. Being willing to make more sacrifices for education is a textbook example of valuing education more. I don't know whether the writer, Moni Basu, is just stupid, or whether he is bending over backwards to avoid saying something positive about one group resulting in him being charged with political incorrectness.

What are we coming to when we can't even speak the truth anymore without fear of being publicly pilloried for supposed racism?

The quote is not by the writer. It is a quote from a UC Riverside professor. I find the level of reading comprehension on the CNN boards very worrisome. No wonder people still think Obama was not born in the USA and that he is Muslim. We need some sort of IQ test or level of understanding the issues before allowing people to vote.

If I am not mistaken, those of the same religious persuasion back a hundred years ago, also had babies to help support family and because of certain religious teachings. Sure has not changed as we see by those who oppose birth control and women's right to choose. Again, if those who write these posts learned history as much as immigrants need to before they are allowed to become citizens, we would be a much greater country as opposed to one being ruled, once again, by the New Rockefellers and other past magnates.

"Out of deference to the critics, I want to comment on … what the bill will not do. First, our cities will not be flooded with a million immigrants annually. Under the proposed bill, the present level of immigration remains substantially the same … Secondly, the ethnic mix of this country will not be upset … Contrary to the charges in some quarters, S.500 will not inundate America with immigrants from any one country or area, or the most populated and economically deprived nations of Africa and Asia. In the final analysis, the ethnic pattern of immigration under the proposed measure is not expected to change as sharply as the critics seem to think. Thirdly, the bill will not permit the entry of subversive persons, criminals, illiterates, or those with contagious disease or serious mental illness. As I noted a moment ago, no immigrant visa will be issued to a person who is likely to become a public charge … the charges I have mentioned are highly emotional, irrational, and with little foundation in fact. They are out of line with the obligations of responsible citizenship."

Not that I am agreeing with one side or the other but, it's a shame we can't intellectually discuss the POSSIBILITY of a genetic advantage without someone screaming racism. Logically, it's not only possible, it is likely that there are genetic differences that may be advantageous in a specific envirnment.

There are many peer viewed scientific studies that show that East Asians have approximately a 6 point IQ advantage over Whites. And that the majority of that IQ gap is due to genetics. "The Bell Curve" was one book that touched on this topic but there are tons of studies on this topic.

The "hard work" explanation doesn't work when IQ differences between races exist even at age 3, before any formal schooling as began and still exists even when Asian children are adopted by non Asian parents. See studies by Dr. Arthur Jensen.

people should learn different language. I think most older people who come here are too old to learn. So that is okay since they are old, _ respect for the elders. Most young people of various ethnics do speak English and do so well too. Majority of illegal immigrants here are poor and are too busy to make ends meet to sustain their livelihood and help out of their family back home, wherever they are from. Look nice folks and idiots out there, we are in the same roof, illegal or not, learn to get used to each other and evolve to a better more peaceful specie. Our enemy are not them illegals, white, black, gray, ta-pin-lu color, our very enemy is our inability to accept reality and to compete with others beyond the border. We as a whole, should be busy to compete with China, Russia, ... the rest of the world. Resources are becoming more scarce, harder to find. Get busy to learn, teach, and build our next stronger, kinder generation.

There are less illegal Asians here, b/c it's far more difficult to walk thousands of miles across the Pacific Ocean than it is to walk a few miles across the desert. And they aren't given automatic amnesty like the Cubans are if they reach American soil. You won't see Asian-Americans picketing with the illegal Hispanic college students saying they deserve a dream too, b/c they went through the red-tape and bureaucratic process of getting a green card, student visa, or work visa, BEFORE they came here. They feel everyone else should be subject to the process as well.

There is a relatively small number that come in container ships, but it's becoming less and less appealing to most people in Asia to take such a treacherous ride, given how living standards are increasing out there. There are probably more people come with tourist visas and overstay their welcome, but usually the DHS takes no time to find these people and ask them to leave promptly... But most do leave when they need to, because they want to be able to re-enter the country with another tourist visa at later date.

Don't have a problem with LEGAL Hispanic immigrants, but Asian immigrants tend to be law-abiding citizens who are productive both in innovation and intellect, and put their allegience to their home country behind that of being a loyal citizen of the United States. They do it all without complaining or whining about their plight, which is admirable.

There are plenty of distructive asian gangs in America but thats not my point. Point is you're taking a positive stereo type about one group and saying their fine, then choosing a more negative stereo type about another group and subtly justifying racism against them. Truth is there are tons of hard working, law abiding hispanic workers in this country trying to make better lives for themselves, doing jobs that white americans would never stoop to and they still get trampled on, even in a seemingly benign article here about different groups of immigrants. I guess the easiest way to prop yourself or your group persay, is to tear others down...

Actually, higher levels of education are generally correlated with voting democratic/progressive. However, at this point the legal immigrants coming in won't factor into voting at this point. They can't vote until they get through the citizenship process with can take decades. Their children can though but the children of the recent immigration bump won't be there for a decade or more.

Oh, and JK, I've a feeling that you would dismiss any Asian voting for the left as not being intelligent. And seriously, when you hang out with your vast array of Asian friends (please note the sarcasm there) how often do you really discuss how they vote?

Yeah it is just another job... nothing wrong, but just another job. Just don't make it a patriotism thing.

Oh come on, quit being so racist. Those drug dealing illegals from mexico with their 20 kids running around and 10 cars on their front porch are really enriching your life and your neighborhood, you just can't realize it yet because you haven't drunk enough of obama's kool aid.

FnOrdz: You wrote that Asians rarely marry outside their own race. I'm a white American who married a Korean woman in 1984, when I was in the Army in Korea. As a soldier I was certainly not rich. My experience is not all that unusual. Your comment paints with too broad a brush.

Asians born and raised here tend to marry people who are just as educated as they are- and most of them tend to be Asian, too. As simple as that!

One question that should be asked up front. What are the numbers of Asians that are here leaglly and the same with Latinos. What are the percentages that become U.S. citizens in each group. Most people that are opposed to those who come here illegally truly welcome those who come here by going through the process. Our city has stories of new citizens sworn in and welcome them knowing that for many it was a long process in time, patience and effort.

Yap like me. Me and my family spent almost 30k to come here LEGALY!!! We are a catholic minotiry from IRAN that came here for freedom of religion. We simply went to the US embassy in Austria, presented our case and the United States welcomed us with arms open. Now 11 years later i'm an network analyst and am living a happy life paying ALOT of taxes to take care of our illegal leeches.

I wouldn't say they are racist. Their culture and history is based on "confucianism", which makes them unite with same mindset people easier than others. I am not saying that they are better or worse. It just their culture.

The article begins by making the assertion that while many Americans are concerned with illegal immigration from the south (Mexico), Asians have now taken over Latinos as the largest group of new arrivals every year – insinuating that somehow America has ignored the "problem" of Asians pouring into the US. I could have missed it, but was there evidence that Asian's are in the United States illegally?

"This is an important moment to see immigration for what it is – that it is far more complicated and diverse than deporting illegal immigrants," Ramakrishnan said." Again and again and again...for many, it is NOT a discussion against immigration – it is a discussion about ILLEGAL immigration. Please do not confuse the two.

Welcome to the Oriental people and to the non-muslim Asians of India. These are intelligent and hard-working people who appreciate our freedoms. The Asian ethnicities to worry about are the muslim 'refugees' allowed in because of the many wars in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, and other Islamic areas. These Islamic 'Asians' do not appreciate our freedoms should not immigrate here, but are being allowed in under bleeding-heart 'refugee' status – stop it.

      EXACTLY!

Also since US immigration quotas take illegal immigration into account and lower the quota for people to legally immigrate her from those countries.

By ignoring illegal immigration in their numbers this article shows that it's written to promote a political agenda instead of to provide facts.

You imply that all Asians come here legally. I know people who are "on the path to citizenship' who swear to the government that they want to become citizens, but they plan to leave as soon as their children are born here and get US citizenship that way.

There is a big problem in the NYC area with illegal Asian immigrants, but people focus too much on Hispanics.

As most Indians would be aware – their parents/family members have reached the US only on the basis of educational credentials and not via the Southern border. Most Indian family members have awaited about 10 years to come to the country legally and strive hard to make a better living; so why should a particular race be exempted from following the law of the land. Even to date, educated professionals from India have to await many years before they are given permanent residency; so why should a race have to bypass the laws of this country? Some fools might suggest that the immigration policy in place should continue as is; does that mean the US should continue its immigration policy until it becomes another over-populated country like India or China. Some policies work for some decades and need to be altered as per the reality on the ground. As this country becomes more populated and the longevity of the human race increases, we probably might even have to stop immigration for a few years ( like many other countries in the world) . Canada and Australia have a good immigration policy in place – get educated immigrants and also specify where they should live atleast for a few years.

Latino is not a race (can be white, mixed, black, Asian). Anyway, it is only because of the easy access by the US/Mex border, without a border you would only have the Latinos who came here with a visa (College, Work, Marriage and some illegals who overstayed the tourist visa) and you would have more educated people. A student visa is very easy to get, always that you have the money to pay for College. The tourist visa is only granted to a little group of people.
