Asians, more than Latinos, are largest group of new arrivals in U.S.

By Moni Basu, CNN

(CNN) –The immigration debate often centers on stemming the flow of people entering the United States illegally and what to do about securing borders to the south. But here's a fact that goes without much attention: Asians have now taken over Latinos as the largest group of new arrivals every year.

In 2010, 36% of new immigrants were Asians compared to 31% for Hispanics, according to a report released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center.

That's a significant change from a decade ago, when 19% of immigrants were Asians and 59% were Hispanics.

"They were already a significant part of the immigration story. It seems like in the last few years they are the most important part of the immigration story," said Karthick Ramakrishnan, a political scientist at the University of California at Riverside, and expert on Asian-American immigration and civic participation.

He said that if the trends continue, Asian-Americans will play greater roles in shaping American society and perhaps, more significantly in an election year, they will have an impact at the polls.

"This is an important moment to see immigration for what it is - that it is far more complicated and diverse than deporting illegal immigrants," Ramakrishnan said, referring to discussion sparked by President Barack Obama's policy shift last week to spare some children of illegal immigrants from deportation.

Far fewer Asian Americans enter the United States illegally than do Hispanics. The Pew survey looked at recent arrivals of people with both legal and unauthorized status, as well as those arriving with work, student or other temporary visas.

Pew's exhaustive new report on Asian-Americans found important differences between Asian-Americans and other population groups in America. It also shed light on the diversity among Asian-Americans, who sometimes cringe at the broadness of the category that covers every country of origin from Afghanistan to South Korea.

The Pew survey showed that across the board, Asian-Americans are more satisfied than any other Americans with their lives, finances and direction of the country.

They also place more value on traditional marriage, family and parenthood and usually possess a strong work ethic.

Nearly seven in 10 respondents said people could get ahead if they are willing to work hard. And 93% of Asian-Americans describe people of their origin as "very hard-working," whereas only 57% said the same about Americans as a whole.

Asian-Americans also attain college degrees (61%) at about double the rate of recent non-Asian immigrants (30%), Pew found.

"The overall picture that you get from this survey is that like immigrants throughout American history, Asian-Americans are strivers," said Pew’s Paul Taylor, who edited the study.

"But what's interesting about them are the educational credentials.” He said. “By far they are the best educated in American history."

It's not that Asian-Americans value education more.

"Everyone values education," Ramakrishnan said. "But the difference is in the sacrifices Asian-Americans are willing to make."

He said his department’s research has found instances where Asian families in Southern California will move into a much smaller house in order to move to the best school districts.

However, some Asian-Americans recognize that they may go overboard in stressing hard work.

Nearly 39% in the Pew survey said Asian-American parents put too much pressure on their children to do well in school. Think "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother," the provocative memoir by Yale Law Professor Amy Chua that sparked conversation about strict parenting.

Pew recognized the vast differences between the nationalities lumped under the U.S. Census Bureau category of Asian-American - the six major countries are China, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Vietnam and India.

New citizens: Why did you become an American?

Indian-Americans lead other groups in terms of income and education.

Seven in 10 Indian-American adults ages 25 and older have a college degree, compared with about half of Americans of Korean, Chinese, Filipino and Japanese ancestry, and about a quarter of Vietnamese-Americans.

Ramakrishnan attributed that largely to the fact that the Indians coming to America are the cream of the crop. They also have very high proficiency levels in English because of a history of British colonialism.

As a whole, Pew found Asian median income and household wealth exceeded average Americans.

Asian median annual household income is $66,000 versus $49,800 for all Americans.

Asians who came to this country are more likely than their compatriots back home to say their standard of living is better than that of their parents at the same stage of life.

But there are differences on the socioeconomic ladder.

Americans with Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese and “other U.S. Asian” origins have a higher poverty rate than does the general public, while Pew found that those with Indian, Japanese and Filipino origins have lower rates.

There were other factors that made the groups distinct.

The survey noted that Indian-Americans stand out in the personal importance they place on parenting - 78% of them said being a good parent is one of the most important things to them personally.

Korean-Americans are the most likely to say discrimination against their group is a major problem, and they are the least likely to say that their group gets along very well with other racial and ethnic groups.

In contrast, Filipinos are the most positive on interethnic and interracial relations in America.

The Vietnamese are the only major subgroup who arrived on American shores as political refugees; the others say they have come mostly for economic, educational and family reasons.

Ramakrishnan said the Vietnamese were also the only subgroup that tended to vote Republican but that is changing given anti-immigration positions and other exclusionary measures supported by some GOP lawmakers.

The American dream began later for Asian-Americans than other immigrant groups because of racial discrimination.

It was not until 1965, during the height of the civil rights movement and robust economic growth, that the United States opened its doors to immigration from all parts of the world.

The decision paved the way for Asian-Americans to grow from less than 1% of the population more than 40 years ago to nearly 6% now.

Persisting prejudice against Asians led to many communities developing in their own enclaves, Taylor said. Hence the blossoming of Chinatowns, Japantowns and Koreatowns.

But now Asian-Americans are more likely to live in mixed neighborhoods and marry out of their race.

"When newly minted medical school graduate Priscilla Chan married Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg last month, she joined the 37% of all recent Asian-American brides who wed a non-Asian groom," the Pew report said.

Between 2008 and 2010, 29% of all Asian newlyweds married someone of a different race, compared with 26% of Hispanics, 17% of blacks and 9% of whites.

Among them, Japanese had the highest rate of intermarriage and Indians had the lowest, Pew said. More than half of recent Japanese newlyweds married a non-Asian; among recent Indian newlyweds, one in eight did.

Another big distinction was with single parenthood. Forty-one percent of all American parents are single parents. Among Asians, that number plummets to 16 % and among Indians, it's 2% to 3%.

Pew spoke with 3,511 Asian-Americans between January 3 and March 27. The telephone interviews were conducted in English and seven Asian languages.

Ramakrishnan said the Asian-American population, unnoticed before in many spheres of American life, would only continue to increase its share of the spotlight.

In swing states like Virginia and Nevada, where census data now shows Asians make up 9% of the population, Asian-Americans will make a mark at the ballot box in November, Ramakrishnan predicted. Most tend to vote Democratic.

"Republicans should be wary," he said.

At the very least, Taylor said the robust Asian-American immigration is sure to redefine the debate over people coming to these shores.

"Illegal immigration has been a driver of the immigration policy debate and illegal immigration has been primarily associated with Hispanics," he said.

But now, he said, the discussion may be forced to keep up with immigration realities.

Yes, Asians have been the most successful immigrants by far. And that includes many Muslims from Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh the GOP just absolutely despise.

If you have an issue with them being referred to as Hispanic.. that it up with them. They call themselves Hispanic. Also..most of them were NOT born here or are second generation to those who came here illegal. Now I know you aren’t so good with history.. but look into Reagan’s amnesty.

Great news! I love Asians. On average, they make great neighbors, they tend to be well educated, adapt well to American culture while retaining the good aspects of their own and generally are polite, well mannered people. If I had to come up with a list of non-European descent immigrants I'd like to have as neighbors, Asians would be at the very top of the list. Welcome.

While I can see how immigrants might be wary of GOP immigration stance, I do think immigrants need to notice the family values that GOP candidates usually support (I say usually because some Republicans are not only fiscally messed up but now siding with the immoral standards of Democrats–abortion and gay marriage). Immigrants who value family and traditional marriage and cultural customs, should remember that these things are the foundation of a society (the family) and siding with immoral positions from liberal Democrats (it used to be that Dems were moralistic but most are not anymore) because of fiscal issues should pale in comparison to the family values that hold a society together. If we look at the history of liberalism, we will see the high rate of divorce, broken families, children with many psychological problems due to these family problems. These things have only worsened under politically liberal governing.

Yes, of course, "family values" solves every issue for a society... America, traditionally has a 50% marriage failure rate, and the other 50% are living with spouses that they hate, fear or are economically enslaved to.

And, as we are all well aware, only the Republicans have "family values"...

Mei, I'm hispanic and you are right, non of the two parties fulfill th values of our society, we hispanics tend to be family oriented, and most hispanics countries, abortion is ilegal, but most of the antiimigration bills that have divided our families come from republicans, that is why more hispanics vote for president Obama, we have to decide between abortion and our relatives that are being deported, is sad 😦

"we have to decide between abortion and our relatives that are being deported". No one is forcing abortion. Democrat policy is 'pro-choice', not 'pro-abortion'. And pro-choice also does NOT mean that abortion is encouraged; its not. It is an individual's free choice and even if (for example) 99% of Americans are against abortion, they should exercise that 'choice' and not abort. But they should not trample on the rights of the 1% who think differently and choose abortion. I am a woman and if I get pregnant, I probably will never consider abortion (my choice). But I can understand why some women make that decision.

I wonder which group is the most intelligent:

    A. Works very hard, highly educated, and is also wealthy.
    B. Works very hard, highly educated, and is dirt poor.
    C. Does not work hard (or not at all), barely educated, and is wealthy.
    D. Does not work hard (or not at all), barely educated, and is dirt poor.

Logically, it should be C, but who the heck knows.

Let's not go too crazy about international academic rankings - you know, the ones that show the US perpetually mired in 13th place. There's growing belief that other countries do better in these K-12 structured tests, but that US students are much better groomed to deal with college/university challenges. Of the US News' Top 400 Universities, the over-whelming majority are American. China recently sent a delegation to the US on a mission to see why our K-12 students are, apparently, much "happier" and "confident" compared to their Chinese counterparts. China has wondered aloud why they don';t have any Jobs, Bezos, Musks, or Gates in their country. Finland kicks our butts in these K-12 rankings but isn't even close in terms of innovation or economy.

Asians do not march waving flags of the racist and corrupt nation of Mexico in our streets all the while demanding that America legalize them becuase we "stole their land." FACT: The Mexican-American war lasted from 1846-1848. It began with continued bloody ambushes by Mexican bandits against American expedition forces along the Nueces River. The Americans repeatedly sent diplomats to Mexico City to seek a peaceful end to the conflict. America also offered to buy much of the land north of Mexico city as Mexico did not use it as they deemed it unworthy of farming while America was interested in its purchase for expansion. Mexico rejected. Ambushes continued causing Polk to delcare war. It was a controversial war on both sides. The end result is that the Untited States conquered the southwest and the land was divided up into new states. Then, do you know what America did? Something unheard of in human history up to that time. America PAID Mexico after the war as a gesture of goodwill. Yes – never before had a nation paid a nation in which the former conquered. What amounts to billions today was paid to the Mexican nation by America and all Mexican nationals who remained north of the newly created border were granted full American citizenship with all protections and rights granted by the Constitution.

China has used the massive numbers of laborers from their country to rebuild and join the the modern world. Uninformed nonsense. Chinese come to the US because they can own land and a business outright, things denied them in China where land can at best be leased for many years but is always owned by the state. They come here for the good schools in places like San Jose and the opportunity to pass their land and wealth to their offspring, again something they cannot do in China under their current body of law.

It's interesting that people in the USA think they actually own the land and are not leasing it, too. Once you add up a lifetime of property taxes, combined with zoning laws, do you really think you own that land? It's not yours. You are paying rent and you can't do whatever you want with it. Doesn't sound like ownership to me.

Cinchy, here's a fact – the number of educated Hispanic Americans (especially those of Mexican and Cuban descent) in law, engineering, science and medicine has increased in the past decade, and the field is leveling out, we are attaining unprecedented levels of formal higher education than ever before, and that pattern will only continue (or "persist"). When I go to university graduations, especially in California, I see more ethnic minorities (mainly Hispanic and Asian surnames) attaining educational achievement than I've ever seen, which is a testament that times are changing and with the new growing populations, it has been empirically and quantifiably proven that so too will their educational, economic income, and social mobility increase.

(Did you not know that the largest group to collect welfare are white folks? – fact)

It is a known fact that more Hispanics are employed in this terrible US economy than most other groups – why? Simple, we have an innate ability to work extremely hard and we do our jobs competently and very well.

Here's another fact, Hispanic positive contributions to the United States are undisputedly and unequivocally established and well-known, so how dare you make a false statement, not based on fact, but based on your underlying racial animus towards us. Our history (especially my history as a Mexican American) IS American history, and American history is a conglomerate of all the past and present ethnic groups that have immigrated to the United States and have made it the great country that it is. Our U.S. states and cities have Spanish/Mexican name-origins that testify to our contributions.

Get use to the "fact" Cinchy that as our population grows, our prosperity will grow with it. We are well-represented in the judiciary, state legislature and politics, the US Congress, academia and, baby, that's where it matters! Get use to seeing us a lot more in higher places 😉 And I am neither democrat nor republican! And hell no I didn't vote for Obama. Haha.

Geez Paul – if what you said was actually true, that the future would be bright. Too bad, though, you're wrong. The number of Hispanics in college has increased simply because their numbers in the US have increased. As a percentage, however, there has been little change. Also, the percentages of Hispanics at "flagship" colleges/universities is unchanged. Admit it or not, where you go to college does make a difference. So, other than being pretty much completely wrong – great post. Again, the buttress against the dead weight of Hispanics (in terms of contributions to society) are Asian immigrants. Hispanics are, along with blacks, the under-class. It would be great if this wasn't true, but it is. It would be great if there were signs of progress, but there aren't. The solution: Hispanics need to start really valuing much higher-end education.

Us Indians and Asians who came to America should remember that we owe a lot to African Americans. Today we are reaping the fruits of their struggle for equality and the civil rights movement. Their struggle changed the lives of many, not just in America, but in other countries that witnessed the movement. When Obama became POTUS, people all over the world who have faced any kind of discrimination felt like they had won a personal victory and that his victory gave them hope. Life is not just about advanced degrees and high incomes folks, it is also about character and dignity.

I would like to say that I am half Vietnamese and half caucasian and I can tell you that my mother, which is a single parent, has done an outstanding job raising my younger brother and I. My mother came to the United States after the Vietnam war and her parents forced her to leave her home city of Saigon when the communist was taking over. When she arrived in the States she met my father and had my brother and I. My mother and father soon divorced because my father was an abusive and alcoholic marine who was out of control from what I saw as a young child. My mother did what was best for my brother and I and left my father and took us with her. My mother who learned English from Hooked on Phonics did not know what she was going to do since she had no educated background and she barely finished middle school in Vietnam. My mother and my brother and I moved with my aunt, my mom's sister, and knew that my aunt was making good money as a cosmetic nail tech so my mother followed into the trade and now owns a few nail shops and does outstanding and makes over six figures a year all by herself. My mother is an outstanding woman and she came from arriving in the States with nothing and not knowing how to speak English and not having any kind of education to becoming a very successful business owner. I have seen some of my caucasian friend's parents who are together who have college degrees do a lot worse than my mother and it just amazes me how my mom has become so successful all by herself. I hope one day I could be just like my mom and be a great parent just like her. She never gave up and always pushed my brother and I to complete our education and how important it is. My mother always sacraficed her life for my brother and I and always stressed how important it was for us to work hard. Now I am going to school to become an Electrical Engineer and my girlfriend which is Vietnamese as well, is going to school to become a Dental Hygenist and we hope to be everything to our kids like how our parents are to us. I am proud of my heritage and everything it represents and others like me should as well.

I agree. I love the Vietnamese People as well as the Mexican American people down here in Texas. I don't get all of the racism. When I go to their stores and restaurants, it's like an adventure. The food is so interesting and the people are beautiful. I just don't get the racist down here. I work with both groups. Very professional, funny, interesting....and very sharp races of people.

The point that seems to be missed is that the traditional White majority is fading fast. Rant and rave all you want, but that is the way ti is going to turn out. I am an asian redneck. I just don't represent the rebel flag, but I love mud riding and hunting and the outdoors. Some of my asian friends make fun of me because of it, but I can't help what I love. I don't try to talk country or anything. I just like to ride 4 wheelers, go mud riding, fishing, hunting and just being out in the good out doors. I love the South and I don't think I would want to be anywhere else. Also I know a few other asian rednecks as well lol.

I am an employee of a company that was started by two Asian immigrants who move to America 25 years ago. We have now more than 130 employees who are all American-born citizens and residents of a small Midwestern town. Reading some of the comments here really makes me sick because for 10 years now, despite the economic downturn, we are still stronger thanks to these two immigrants who, in my opinion, have more reasons to be considered real Americans than many of us.

Especially considering so many take their assisted education (because it wouldn’t happen without the government’s approval/assistance) and go back to their native countries to become competitors of the U.S. Now assuming Shantwana is black I agree that “African-Americans” are in no potion to be complain about preferential treatment of a minority group. I wish the following weren't true, but it is: Hispanic and black demographic groups are simply not positively contributing to this country. They are disproportionately under-represented as doctors, scientists, engineers, and technologists. Yes, yes, yes... I know some Hispanics and blacks are very successful in these fields. They are, though, the exceptions, not the rule. On the other hand, Asians - especially people from India and the Orient - are making America a much better place. It sounds cold, but I hope the Asian population in this country grows at a much faster rate than the Hispanic and black populations. Even better - Hispanics and blacks: it's time for you all to finally get yourselves highly educated. God knows you're overdue.

      American

Get use to seeing us a lot more in higher places And I am neither democrat nor republican! And hell no I didn't vote for Obama. Haha.

Nothing would please me more than see Hispanics really start to embrace quality higher ed (yes, it matters where you go to college). I would love to have a Mexican-American doctor and work for a Mexican-American engineer. The upward trajectory of Hispanics in this country might be upwards - but it needs to be a lot higher. CNN themselves ran a story recently about a study showing that even after 5 generations in this country, the education level of Hispanics has not appreciably changed. Again, I hope Hispanics really are getting their act together. Lastly, you're not really confused about how more welfare recipients are white, are you??? You need to look at proportional representation, not absolute numbers. Come on.

      @Cinchy,

My take on this is that most Indians and Asians are by tradition or culture honed on to higher education, and into professional occupations like engineering, technology, sciences, and medicine.

I have often heard many Indian parents tell me that they would gladly live under a bridge to pay for educational expenses of their children – specially to Ivy League schools. Education is paramount for them.

There is another factor, Asians have very strong family units, and children are never pressed to leave home, be independent financially & be on their own, specially when continuing their education, like medicine.
In the end, education & sacrifice pays off.

For whatever reason, and unfortunately, for many Blacks and Hispanics, education has never been high up in the totem pole. Earning lots of money, maybe, but not education. Nowadays, we also see many Whites kids not being interested in advanced education & falling into this same trap.

Knowledge is power, and world will always belong to people who have knowledge.

Also consider that most of the hispanic immigrants are economic immigrants, most of the well educated people in this countries do not emmigrate, they don't need to, if they have an education is because his family had the means to do it. Specially if this uneducated people are from villages.

(Did you not know that the largest group to collect welfare are white folks? – fact) – half truth more like it. If you were as educated as you think you are would know how statistics work. There are more whites on welfare before they are 70% of the population. The part you MISS or IGNORE is the percentage. Black are DISPROPORTIONATELY on welfare and commit crime. I don't Asian languages, Arabic, Russian, etc. Obviously Spanish speaking people are accomodated in this way uniquely among all groups of immigrants.

But you do need to explain why it is insulting for Hispanics to be called Latinos and the other way around, specially when people are not aware of any deep racial/ethnic divisions?

Hispanic and Latino are two very different things. Hispanics are people from Spanish decent (even part Spanish) which also applies to almost every Latin American country, Brazil being the largest exemption. Latino is someone who descends from Latin America including Brazil, Haiti, French Guyana, etc.

      • en then what?

Well about Hispanic and Latino, there are lot to say, and there are many opinions about it. To understand it, you have to see the roots of the words.

Hispanic come from the word Hispania, wich is the name of the peninsula that are composed by Spain and Portugal
Latino comes from the word Latin, wich is the language spoken in the Roman Impire and now is spoken in the Vatican,
so, because that a latino would be someone that his mother language descend from latin, such as a italian, romenian, spanish, portugues, and so on.
And hispanic someone descended from the hispanic or iberian peninusula, in this case couldbe also a spaniyard, mexican, colombian and so.
About latinoamericans, and hispanoamaericans, we are a group of ethnic groups, white, black, amerindian, asians, and so, that have in common a cultural heritage and lenguage, spanish and portuguess. Complicated? I know, you got to see our family pic!! 😦

Who in their right mind would be so lazy that they would expose thier infants to drugs, gangs, and poor education on a daily basis?Who would subject themselves to being away from thier children for years in order to just suck a country dry? What idiot would subject themselves to the predjudice and ignorance that is pervasive in some pockets of this country? After reading these post I am amazed by the lack of humility. It is so easy to judge others and celebrate the fact that you are a part of some celebrated race.As if you chose to be a part of that race.As if you earned your place in that race.If I could choose a race for my child it would be the race of privilege.Who wants thier child to face predjudice and racism? Many of you are wondering and probably wondering who the priviledge race is that I am speaking of.Why not refer back to Hitler? Some of you certainly sound like him.Btw.Internet history is forever.Perhaps your words will come back to haunt you one day.

Asian parents tend to put a lot of stock in setting their children up for success in the future. Usually that translates to giving them the best education they can buy. They see it as an investment. After all, many Asian cultures swap rolls meaning that the parent that provides for their children will be taken care of in old age by those children. I'm not saying that applies to everyone, but I've seen the premise at work and it's still a reasonable expectation for those who have left their original country within a generation or so.

We must adopt a firm policy of stopping access to this country. It matters not from whence they came, the problem is that they are here. Our leaders are their to protect the interests of Americans, and their failure to close the borders is allowing the destruction of my country. Get aliens off my land, off my roads, out of my schools, and out of my pocket. Do it now, Obama.

The Asians I know work harder and produce more value for this country than the native born whites I know. They don't ask for hand outs, they triple up in homes to save money, help each other out and get ahead in business and education. They make better citizens than too many whites who are natural born and have a chip on their shoulder about how much better some immigrants do than they did, like you perhaps.

Asking Obama to get rid of the immigrants seems silly since Obama has ruled leniently in favor of immigrants in the very recent past... And seriously... unless you're a Native American ie. "savage Indian"... you're as much an immigrant as the rest of us. (sorry about the "savage indian" comment...that was meant to be totally sarcastic. I was having trouble thinking of a good way to destinguish between Native Americans and... well... real Indians from India...)

      Hi Lila,

Do you agree with how the GOP attacks the undocumented residents?

My main issue with conservative Asians is how they deny opportunities to other immigrants, the same opportunity that allowed them to come to the good US & A. Conservative & religious Latinos and Vietnamese often fit in this category. A perfect example is how New Mexico Governor, Susana Martinez, illegally arrived in the US as an "anchored" baby but forcefully denies others the same opportunity granted upon her. It's a conundrum that I can't seem to figure out.

This study is awful in reinforcing blanket stereotypes. I live in L.A. where the majority of folks are either Latino or Asian and can tell you that the most of folks in either category that I know (family, friends, neighbors and co-workers) all have a great work ethic and they ALL place a great deal of importance on family - regardless of what country they came from in Asia or Latin America. As far as education, I just attended a graduation at Cal State L.A. where the vast majority of surnames were either Asian or Latino. The best thing is that there is an increasing amount of intermarrianges in this area between Asians and Hispanics (mostly Chinese and Mexican), and it's definitely changing the way we live - and eat. Ever heard of Kogi Tacos? Mmmm.... deeelish!

This is fantastic news to me. Asian Immigrants come here, don't expect special treatment, take it in turn for the entire family to learn English, want to be integrated into American culture, are respectful, and most of them are polite and kind and that is a far cry from what I see from Latino Immigrants who come here, don't give a rats a_s about this country, throw their trash anywhere, drive freeway speeds down residential streets, put enoumous strains on our schools because of all the extra attention that is required to make special concessions to them when the money could be better used to elevate the schools as a whole. Worst of all, they say they want "respect" but don't seem to want to show or give any. Why is it that Latinos are so selective about their so-called "Conservative" thinking, they sure don't practice birth control but sure line up to vote for the one part that advocates abortion which of course is in complete contradiction to their Roman Catholic ways. What hypocrits!!!

Clearly you are part of the problem. Since you unflinchingly lump all Latinos into one category and mark them as people to be disrespected, how can you expect them to respect you (and America as a whole)? Also, you expect everyone to learn English but America does not have an official national language. Have you attempted to learn any Spanish, Chinese, Korean, etc? If you are sticking to your own roots and not making an effort to engage the people you apparently despise, nothing good can come of it.

I have tutored English as a Second Language for 9 years. It is almost impossible to recruit and retain dedicated tutors – people had much rather complain that immigrants don't want to learn English! I know many Latino families and I assure you they DO practice birth control. Some have one child, most have only 2 and a couple have 3 children. Not one of the many couples I know have more than that!! They are hard-working, loving parents who want to provide the best they can for their children and realize the best way to do that is by limiting the size of their families. They aren't getting welfare checks, so they aren't going to be subsidized for having more kids! I am white, 64 years old, and I have learned some Spanish so I could be a better tutor and friend. As part of a medical mission team to impoverished areas of Mexico, I have seen firsthand the conditions that drive people to risk their lives to come to this country to seek better lives for their families. These brave, wonderful immigrants make good, dependable employees, fine and helpful neighbors, and dear friends. That is what I have found, because I have taken the time to get to know them. And frankly, that is what is threatening to many of our so-called citizens. They would much rather be mired in their prejudice than admit that they are being shown up for the shallow, selfish, lazy, self-righteous bigots they are

Please allow Immigrants to immigrate through military service. USCIS is having big difficulties in converting Green Card Holders to citizens. why ? because when the money is out, all will go back home ' reverse migration" as occuring among many Indian And Chinese nationals who have bee very successful in the US. Irish and Italian Americans never went back, why because when you fight and die for something you dont jump ship. My opinion, have three types of Visas – 10 yr work/ Business Visas, Work/ Business 30 Year Green Cards (with upgrade to Citizenship), Life time Green Card with Citizenship Upgrade ( Military Service/celebrity/Humanitarian/ Special Achievement).

I agree that in my experience Latinos (Mexicans at least, I don't have experience as to other groups) in general have a strong work ethic. But that's not the problem. They compete with citizens for unskilled labor jobs and drive down wages for those jobs. I know a guy, a small business owner who employs a lot of Mexican "immigrants." It's funny how this guy is Mr. Ultra-Right Wing on every issue EXCEPT immigration. He loves hiring illegals because they provide him hard work at rock-bottom wages.

And yes, they also do take advantage of all free social services they can, like charity hospital services. Heck, I would too if I were them. But this costs our country a lot of money and they do not ultimately add value to our economy.

Many Asians have better work ethics because it's ingrained in them since childhood. Look at the educaitonal statistics of Asian countries in general. They are smarter in many fields and some have a longer school week and year compared to the United States. They understand that education is not the answer but it does help in furthering one's life in many areas. They are more willing to make sacrificies along the way to reach their goals for the overall family instead of sacrificing the family to reach their goals. They understand respect and manners better. You will probably never find an Asian child disrespecting their elders or parents in ways American children do now. Asian children quickly adapt to being better disciplined than a bunch of American kids. I'm referencing Asian and American kids because there are stark differences between them. I understand both because I'm half Asian and have seen families from both sides.

You're absolutely right. I am part Asian and I can say that in general that has mostly been my observation. I think the values that we espouse regarding family, work, sacrifice and education are a clarion call to all Americans to re-discover what some Euro-Americans like to describe as "their" "Puritan Ethic".

But the ethic you speak of is..totally the ethic of the Religion known as Americanism, sometime confused with Christianity or Puritanism as you stated but totally different ad created by non Christians...Deist to be exact who took the parts of Christianity and whatever other influence they liked, and tossed out the rest.

I get what your saying my2cents. Americans have lost their moral soul, or many of them in the Democrat field unfortunately. In the past, it used to be that Democrat morality was one with fiscal responsibility but not anymore. Now the Republicans are fighting against fiscal morality in many issues while still upholding family and moral values (traditional marriage, pro-life issues). Personally, I rarely agree with GOP fiscal decisions but I applaud the moral family values. I hope Asian voters fight for moral family values because Obama is a big time gay marriage supporter.

        Hi Mei,

You speak of moral family values, what is that to you exactly? Will you consider it moral to deny relations to a loved one, a family member, spouse, or child, because s/he is homosexual? Will you cut ties with your daughter if she chooses to abort a child impregnated by a rapist? It is unfair to generalize and to impose your singular tunnel vision onto others.

      • integration is important

There is something very positive to be said about immigrants who arrive legally and who make real efforts to integrate. This is true no matter what country it is. People immigrating to another country should learn to speak and write the language proficiently. In the past few decades, more and more immigrants retreat to enclaves and never learn the language in the USA. In Miami, for example, all the public signge is in both English and Spanish and a large subsection of the population there has been here for decades and still don't speak English. This also applies for native-born people as well. Ebonics is completely unacceptable. All people living in a country should be proficient in the official language. I know people who came from China a few decades ago who STILL don't speak English. I've learned both Spanish and Mandarin so there's just no excuse.

Illegal immigrants are all over the world. They are not "invading" into anybody's lives. In the case of the United States of America, these immigrants are taking the jobs that the Americans are TOO PROUD to do ie. bussing tables, washing other people's dirty laundry, food delivery, garbage pick-up, cleaning toilets, factory work, etc. So, be thankful that your dirty jobs are being picked up after you while these immigrants are being underpaid and overworked. Don't judge them unless if you've been in their shoes!
If the lazy Americans would get off their couch potato butts and just get a job (ANY JOB) to survive and pay bills and stop being a show off by spending what they DO NOT have, our country would not be in the situation it's in today, and social security will not be drained out. So, don't complain about how bad your life is. FIX IT. ACT ON IT! Don't wait for someone else to pay for your foreclosed home and your credit card debts. Only in America, would you get assistance from the government. In a different country, it's a DOG EAT DOG WORLD. You don't work, you don't eat or live. Simple as that.

More importantly, what is it you expect your readers do with this information? Are you boosting or are you some amateur alarmist? I just don’t understand the reason for it. Perhaps you would be so kind as to respond to my post with some sound explaination.

The intent is to keep the focus on the racial aspect as opposed to the legality issue. While some people would prefer no one enter the country at all, the vast majority on the 'conservative' side take issue with the legality of a person who enters the country not their race. By focusing on the race issue this article is basically saying "See all you racists trying to keep Mexicans out, its really the Asians who are taking over America!! Worry about them instead".

Asians are being brought in by companies needing cheap educated workers. Republicans want to attach a green card to every one of them. They said so in the Republican debates...It's just cheap Hispanic labor they yell about publicly for the low information voters in the Republican base....

I was not brought here for cheap labor. As a nurse and years of experience outside US, I believed i helped this country's economy by paying taxes. With the economy going downhill, few things need to change. America has not seen the worst. Native or immigrant everyone need to remember that when economy is bad, corruption is at its worse. Unfortunately looking on race and colors won't help at all.

If they really wanted cheap labor, they would have the Asians laboring in their own country, not provide them with green cards. Those Asians that do end up in "cheap labor" jobs tend to be illegal and thus have no better options. Either they chose to come here to try and pursue a better life or they were sold in human trafficing. Otherwise it's not uncommon to see Asians in many of the highly educated professions.

To those who haven't figured it out CNN is the Fox news of the left. This story reveals one of their methods-partial info.
What they didn't say in the article is that hispanic immigration (legal and illegal) far outnumbers 'asian' immigration over the past ten years. Instead, they are cherry picking the number from the year 2010 – when illegal immigration was largely curtailed and our poor economy made it uneconomical for most Mexican's to seek low paying jobs here. The real story of immigration in the United States is that of the Mexican immigration -for better or worse.

No. They said in the PAST to rate was 57% but now fallen to 31%. Not cherry picking. The NEWS in this story is what is happening now. that Asia has over taken Latin America as the #1 source of immigration.

In the end it hardly matters. I do sue work with hispanic kids. By the 2nd generation they are no different from anyone else.

Good job at not understanding his comment.

He was referring to the "fact" that CNN is "misrepresenting" immigration statistics because it doesn't take into account the illegal immigration from Mexico and South America.

      • 8Jah

No, they said ten years ago the rate was 57%. In truth the rate four years ago was more like 67%. In any one year the numbers could be vastly different that the next. To be accurate they should use a ten year rolling average. Then they would find that hispanic immigration far outnumbers 'asian' immigration.

Kimora Lee Simmons... African Americans like a little Asian too.

But lets look at the two catagories you proposed:

Whites: are a majority race, therefore you should see more white/Asian mixed marriages than other types. It's statistically sound.

Asian: have much in common with one another... obviouslly. We all have ideals, whether its in regards to family, love or religion. Marrying within your own race suggests you will have many of these ideals in common. That just sounds like good sense to me. Making a marriage work is hard enough without adding totally different values and backgrounds into the mix.
