Opinion: American Muslims live in fear 11 years after 9/11

Editor's Note: Sumbul Ali-Karamali is the author of The Muslim Next Door: the Qur’an, the Media, and that Veil Thing, and Growing up Muslim: Understanding the Beliefs and Practices of Islam. She is on the steering committee of Women in Islamic Spirituality and Equality and is a member of the Muslim Women’s Global Shura Council, both of which aim to promote women’s rights and human rights from an Islamic perspective.

By Sumbul Ali-Karamali, Special to CNN

(CNN) - My father always told me never to talk about religion, politics, or other people’s children. He was part of a generation of American Muslims who wanted to stay quiet and assimilate into American life and not rock the boat. Growing up in Southern California, I tried to follow his advice.

But after 9/11, I found that I, along with other American Muslims,  have had little choice but to talk about religion.

Although countless Muslims have condemned the acts of 9/11 in the United States and worldwide, American Muslims became objects of suspicion.

The 9/11 terrorists broke numerous laws of Islam and were denounced as mass murderers by Islamic religious leaders.  Even so, Islam is viewed as a religion preaching violence.

In the aftermath, amidst the fear and anger, many American Muslims realized that the reason Americans were so quick to believe the worst about Muslims after the horrific attacks of 9/11 was that Americans knew little about even the most basic tenets of Islam.

And we realized that if we didn’t explain our beliefs and traditions, then other people would write our stories for us.

Despite our efforts, that’s exactly what has happened.

Although 9/11 did compel some Americans to learn more about Islam, it also triggered a wave of anti-Islam feeling that has burgeoned.  And though there have been interfaith initiatives, books on Islam, documentaries, education efforts, and shows like "All-American Muslim," polls show that Americans’ negative views of Islam have increased since 9/11, not decreased.

Such trends cannot help but discourage even the most optimistic of American Muslims; many of us are more fearful now than a decade ago, and entire Muslim communities feel besieged.

Anti-mosque incidents have escalated in recent years. Earlier this summer, a mosque in Joplin, Missouri, burned to the ground. Last year, Roger Stockham was arrested with explosives outside the Islamic Center in Dearborn, Michigan. An arson fire seriously damaged a mosque in Wichita, Kansas, last year. And incidents of mosque vandalism have become more common.

Hate groups have been on the rise, too; one of the most horrific hate crimes was the murder of Shaima Alawadi, a young mother who had received anonymous notes calling her a terrorist.

Almost every Islamic studies professor or speaker I personally know - whether they are Muslim or not - receives hate mail and sometimes death threats.

How has this happened in our country? There are many reasons. It is not simply a lack of information about American Muslims, but also misinformation and, in many cases, outright fabrications about what Islam entails and what Muslims believe. An example of one of the most ridiculous is the assertion that Muslims cannot abide dogs; we are so evil, apparently, that man’s best friend is our enemy. (See Muslims with Dogs, a website that flippantly dispels this nonsense.)

The Center for American Progress issued a report in 2011 which documented a small but extremely well-funded network of anti-Islam fear-mongers who have worked diligently to spread misinformation about Islam. Directly or indirectly, these fear-mongers fomented the “ground zero mosque” hysteria, promoted the film “The Third Jihad,” which the New York Police Department showed as a training video - and was strongly criticized for doing so - and have been responsible for Islamophobic advertisements on public buses all over the country.

This anti-Islam rhetoric has been connected to violence, too: Anders Breivik, who murdered more than 70 people in Norway, cited anti-Islam bloggers numerous times in his manifesto, in which his stance against “Islamization” was a clear theme.

It’s not just a lack of information on Islam that American Muslims have had to battle, it is an increasing body of vitriolic myths and tall tales about Islam and Muslims that we continually have to explain or dismiss.

Particularly frightening is the eagerness with which public figures and political officials have leapt onto the Islamophobia bandwagon. Peter King’s “Muslim radicalization” hearings,  Michele Bachmann’s baseless accusations of public officials being linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, and the NYPD’s long-term spying on Muslim communities (which produced no leads) are just several examples of the increasing demonization of every Muslim and, increasingly, the entire religion of Islam.

Rising anti-Islamic sentiment in America troubles Muslims

Islam is the second-largest religion in the world, and Muslims comprise more than one-fifth of the world’s population. No religion can flourish for 1,400 years  without being flexible and adaptable.

The defamatory rhetoric directed at Muslims and Islam in this country has little to do with the actual religion or its adherents and everything to do with fear of the Other.

For American Muslims, the past decade has been tumultuous. We have emerged from private life to public life, into the public sphere in an effort to aid understanding between the communities of our multicultural country.

We do it not only for ourselves, but because irrational fear of Islam and Muslims is bad for all Americans: it frays the social fabric of our society; it creates divisions between Americans; it affects the health of our democracy; and it affects the wisdom of our policy choices.

In the last decade, I have encountered numerous Americans who understand this and who, despite the fear-mongers, have made remarkable efforts to connect with Muslims.

Recently, I spoke at a Jewish temple as part of their educational series.  They broke into spontaneous applause during my talk on Islam and women,  and gave me a standing ovation at the end.

They were one of the many moving examples of generosity and openness I have encountered in the past decade. And that, despite the discouragement and fear, is what gives me hope for the future.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Sumbul Ali-Karamali.

Islam is nothing but an evil cult of death whose only purpose for existence is to force itself upon the entire world - at sword point, if necessary. No other religion calls for the forced conversion of every person on the planet under threat of death.

Islam needs to be treated like the enemy of civilization that it is. The longer we pretend that Islam is just another religion, the more headway Islam makes toward being the monster with its tentacles in every country of the world.

You have a choice... be ignorant or know the truth...
The truth is you are wrong... Taliban or terrorists doesn't represent Islam...
A Muslim follows Quran... To follow anything, understanding is very important...
Just reading or picking up text out of context can be misleading...
I know there are lots of web sites trying to defame Islam...
      What can we do...
Bottom line: There are only few in this world... they get to the bottom of the truth...
Rest just speak whatever they like to say and believe whatever pleases to their heart...
It depends which category you fall in...
      Anyway...
Refer Quran Chapter109...read all 6 verses...
      1
      Say: O disbelievers!
      2
      I worship not that which ye worship;
      3
Nor worship ye that which I worship.
      4
And I shall not worship that which ye worship.
      5
Nor will ye worship that which I worship.
      6
Unto you your religion, and unto me my religion.

That proves that what you said is wrong... Thank you sir...

oh really? never heard about the the muslim conquests for hundred and hundred of years where they gave pagans 2 choices death or Islam while they were so generous with christians and jews so they added a third choice to be a second degree citizen....that was all based on those ugly verses specially 9:29, it is open ended sir nothing to do with mecca. This is part of my country history....Man stop lying you make me sick

9:29 Fight against those who (1) believe not in Allâh, (2) nor in the Last Day, (3) nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allâh and His Messenger (4) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islâm) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued

Actions speak much, much louder than words. All over the world, radical Muslims are killing and maiming non-Muslims.

In India, Muslims kill Hindus. In Africa, Muslims kill Christians. In Libya, Muslims kill an ambassador and three of his associates.

You can quote the Koran all you want to. I've seen what I've seen, and Islam is a very ugly cult.

Tell us the quote from the Koran about the rock (or is it a bush) who calls out, "There is Jew hiding behind me. Come and kill him."

Face it, Mo. Your Cult of Flying Body Parts and Heads Being Severed with Video on the Internet has lost its public relations battle.

I agree 100% that "action speak much , much louder than words"...
So let me explain to you why you are wrong again...
As you may know there are 1.6 billion(1,600,000,000) Muslims in the world..
Assume there may be 500,000 terrorist all over the world.....
        The percentage is 0.0003% terrorist...
Now any wise man will not see the actions of 0.0003% Muslims ...
But a wise man will see the action of 99.9997% Muslims....
Now about the quote you mentioned "the rock (or is it a bush) who calls out, "There is Jew hiding behind me."
First of all that's not from Quran... it's the prophecy before the dooms day... See half knowledge can be dangereous...

Flags, tires, automobiles, PEOPLE???...and on the subject of violent protests, Why O' Why do muslims stand out in the streets jumping up and down with AK-47's in their hands ,... always, always, always, chanting "Death to this person, or Deat to that one"???? even if the person they are protesting against didn't kill anyone, or even really commit a crime? and Islam and the muslim majority are peaceful? Pleaturn on your local news and watch for 5 minutes...you will see who the violent ones are..and if these radical muslims are mis interpreting the koran, then someone needs to rewrite it so it they can understand it properly and not go round killing everything..

Q: Can you tell me why Sharia law condones the brutalities against so many women?
A: Misuse of Shariya Law by few bad rulers influenced by few rich in that country condones the brutalities against so many women... Taliban tops the list... It’s a misuse of Shariya Law by few bad rulers... I don’t agree with that at all... it’s not Islam...
Q: Why does it seem like a Muslims favorite pastime is staging violent.../// ....you will see who the violent ones are...?
A: As you said they are “Radical”... Islam doesn’t support that... I hate them too...
Q: if these radical Muslims are misinterpreting the Koran, then someone needs to rewrite it so it they can understand it properly and not go round killing everything...
A: There is nothing wrong with Quran... otherwise every Muslim would have been misguided... to understand this... take an example of simple fire... can burn the house or can cook your food or give you heat in winter... it’s the misuse of a gift from God... These radical Muslims or Christians or any other religion are curse to humanity in the name of religion....

    To Nasrullah Mohammed

Agree with you that there are not 100,000 terrorists in Indonesia, or Malaysia for that matter, and I did not suggest there was. The Indonesian terrorists probably number in the hundreds. The muslims who killed the Ahmadiyya and the three christian schoolgirls were not terrorists. They were nutcase muslims, and my Indonesian muslim friends despised them.

I lived and worked in Indonesia for 8 yrs in Java and Sulawesi. I also visited Ankara, Ismir, Istanbul and Bodrum in Turkey and Kuala Lumpor in Malaysia. They are considered to be the moderate mulim nations. However that is changing! All three are quickly becoming much less tolerant of non muslims and muslim sects. A couple of years ago an Indonesian muslim mob corraled a group of amadiyya muslims and killed all of them in broad daylight, all of which was caught on camera. Was anyone put in prison – no! In Jakarta Indonesia Christians are not allowed to build a church. They must pray in the ballroom or an ante room of a hotel. (I know that there are Catholic and other Christian churches in Jakarta)

I was in Jakarta when the Marriot hotel was bombed (twice) and also the Australian embassy. There was genuine grief from some ordinary muslims, but the big four muslim political parties did not condem these acts of violence. Neither did the Indonesian parliment, so I was not surprised when the US embassy in Kakarta was attacked last week.

If Ms Sumbul Ali-Karamali wishes non muslims to respect Islam and muslims, a good place for her to start would be by denouncing the way muslim countries treat non muslims, and doing something to help the non muslim women in these countries.

These are self proclaimed Imams in hiding and planning against all non Muslims... their main goal is to disrupt regular life of all the guys including Muslims who don't support them... So they kill their own people with suicide bombing... Bottom line all these guys are far far away from Islam... Taliban is one of them... Thanks...

I always thought that Imams are the preachers in the Mosques, and teachers of religion to children. If children are taught by such people what do we expect other than the terrorists? As I see it, the education must be wholistic, not just studying of Quran only.

        Dear Sam...
Calm down... you missed it again... There are 1.6 billion Muslims in the world... if the system would have been incorrect then all 1.6 billion would have been terrorists... So that's not the case...
In few poor Muslim countries like Afghanistan and villages around borders of Pakistan and Yamen, Nigeria etc there are no schools or Masjids(mosques)... So these self proclaimed hate monger Imams take refugee and hide in these places...
There main aim is to spread hate by whatever means to achieve their goal...
That's why drone attacks has been successful...
There are 205 million Muslims in Indonesia... we don't see terrorism there... because Quran is tought there in all schools.
But in Pakistan... there are 178 million Muslims... assume 0.001% are terrorist = 178,000 which is way way big number than reallity... why because there are few areas as I said above... where Quran is not tought...
There are 177 million Muslims in India... we don't see terrorism there because Quran is tought in all homes...
There are 149 million Muslims in Bangla Desh... we don't see terrorism there because Quran is tought in all homes...
There are 80 million Muslims in Egypt... we don't see terrorism there because Quran is tought in all homes... and so on...
So the present system is perfect except few areas as I mentioned above...Hope you got it correctly this time... Thanks...

What do you think are the chances for a King to submit to such brief defying messages? Do you think that those leaders got a fair chance to accept the newly born religion? Here are some questions that came to my mind when I tried to put myself in their place:

What did they know previously about Islam or the prophet before this brief message. The answer is nothing. How much time did it take you to read the entire Quran and understand it knowing that Arabic is your mother tongue? Don’t you think, the least is to send with the messenger a copy of the Quran/Hadiths translated in their language and give them enough time to read and meditate before even mentioning the war/jizyah options? You might tell me, but the Quran was not translated at that time, it was not even fully compiled. That is even worse! Threatening a whole nation with war while you cannot even provide a single copy of the new religion teachings in their language or even in yours! What do you think if Umar Ebn El Khattab was one of those leaders. How his reaction would be? Remember that Umar was called by the prophet “Al Farouk” for his extraordinary sense to differentiate between right and wrong. Do you know that it took him 6 years to accept Islam and during that period he was one of the Islam worst enemies? Yes, 6 years, coming from the same tribe as the prophet, living with him in the same city. How can we expect from those kings to just accept it through a message of 2 sentences from a total stranger to them and that contains mainly threatening? It seems to me that the effort to avoid the war was left entirely on the non Muslim side. I do believe that the Muslim side if sincerely wanted to avoid the war would have done a much better job to convince the other side by providing more information and more time. While saving the individuals of those nations was claimed to be the ultimate goal, they practically became the fuel for those wars and thousands of them died without even knowing anything about Islam.

You don't have the right to dictate what I should/shouldn't use as sources for my speech and the least thing I would be interested to know is why the quran has 114 chapters or any number, what I care about is the violence that fills it and those non sense letters at the beginning of some chapters most scholars agreed they have no interpretation for sir....keep spreading your fairy tales about Islam the religion of peace, Muslims allover the world are proving you wrong everyday, and the more the time passes the less you will be able to convince anybody with you stories, by the way you are very active on this site....do you do that for living?

i am relaxed Nasrullah, I just don't see the point of discussing the "magical" 114 number or the "magical" few letters that starts the chapters, they don't change the fact that Muhammad and his successors have waged bloody wars to impose their faith, read history and the justification for the aggression from Quran and Hadith. If you are not talking about that you either do not know them or you chose to hide them to fool people....that might work for sometime but not forever....bye

You say there is no terrorism in Indonesia. Since 1998 when Suharto was forced to step down, the country has increasing become less tolerant of non muslims. There have been bombings by muslim extremists in Bali (twice) which is 90% Hindu, Jakarta (Marriott twice, Australian embassy, and a small restaurant in Jakarta to name a few). Also in Poso Sulawesi, three christian schoolgirls were beheaded on their way to school.

I am not suggesting Indonesia is another Pakistan, it most certainly is not. However, it is a fact that it is becoming less tolerant of non muslims, and I believe the reason is the money and influence coming from Saudi Arabia.

I live in San Diego... I can give my phone number... Call me or any Muslim he will join you to say against these murderers... But never say Islam is not a religion of Peace... If you say that then we need to resolve that first... Say these terroriest are not following their own religion... Because no religion in the world says kill innocent people... No religion in the world is against humanity... Only misguided few are certainly against humanity...
There are 205 million Muslims in Indonesia... if look at the percentage of terrorist it is not even0.0005%(that is=102,500)
But there are no 102,500 terroriest in Indinesia... Looking at the percentage you can say there is no terrorism in Indonesia... That's what I was talking about...

When the author states "The 9/11 terrorists broke numerous laws of Islam and were denounced as mass murderers by Islamic religious leaders", the first part of her statement may be true, but she is delusional if she believes the second. While there may have been a handful of Islamic religious leaders who denounced them, they were drowned out by the overwhelming chorus of religious, political and other leaders of the Moslem world that celebrated the terrorism and other acts of terrorism since to give any credence to her claim of denouncement.

As the past decades have repeatedly shown, followers of Islam have shown no compunction in the use of violence against those who don't follow their faith. If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, it must be a duck. The denial of this reality will not change the facts of this history: too many followers of Islam have used violence for it to be merely a dangerous few. And to say that Christians have engaged in this behavior in the past is beside the point, no Christian nation condones such behavior and have sacrificed the lives of their sons and daughters to stop this violence, witness Kosovo and Bosnia. Where are Moslems doing the same to stop violence against Christians or followers of other faiths? Iran? Pakistan? Nigeria? Kenya? Ethiopia? Pakistan? Syria?

Until every religious, political and economic leader of the Islamic faith condemns and takes action to prevent the continued violence perpetrated and perpetuated in the name of Islam, the world has no reason to believe that Islam is a religion of peace.

ANy Muslim worried about his own safety should leave the country. You people go around and try to validate your existence in the USA which I view as arrogant and a potential threat. It is amazing how arrogant you people can be. Muslims hate America and do not respect the country yet they beg for us to understand how we need to accept you and honor everything you do. After 9/11, I expected Muslims around the world, especially the American Muslim community, to respond
with dismay to the attacks. There was silence. Sure, there were some talking-head editorials on TV,
and a few insisted that Islam was a religion of peace. But where was the cry from Muslim leaders in
America that that the terrorism is wrong? My daughter, then 10 years old, thought that meant
Muslims felt that the attackers were not wrong, in the Koran-ical sense.... and it's best to keep
quiet about THAT. If there had been a surge of protest from the Muslim community, I could have
argued with her. I still don't know what to think.

It looks like you have not read enough. If you want a concise picture of Muhammad, refer to Jesus' reference to the spirit of truth. Muhammad insisted that he was a Messenger of God and not the source of His own revelation, which is exactly what is described by Jesus. It is interesting to note that the individual in this passage described by Jesus (yes, an individual – Jesus used the male personal pronoun "he" and "his" a total of nine times in the passage) is referred to as the Spirit, considering that when Muhammad referred directly to Jesus, He referred to Him as the Spirit. Any prophet who appears is called false by the followers of the prophet who preceded him. Please remember that Jesus is seen as a false prophet by followers of an earlier dispensation.

Muslims will continue to live in fear because of all the recent events that are happening. The film that has apparently erupted a jihad, has created even more of a reason for Muslims to be living in fear. So until Muslims stop declaring war on every little thing that has to do with their religion Muslims here in the US will always live in fear.

The fact remains that majority of followers of Islam have one point agenda, whether sanctioned by their religion or not – world hegemony at any cost; that is the fact whether you like it or not.

Islam has no such point or agenda called "world hegemony – at any cost".... that is the fact whether you like it or not.
Now here is the truth... Read Chapter 109... it's a small chapter with small 6 verses only...
It clearly says to tell... ... All Non-Muslims that...
"Neither You(Non Muslims) are going to pray to whom I (a Muslim) pray...
Nor I am going to pray to whom You pray...
So You be on your religion and let Me be on my religion...
Please refer it on line and let me know... appreciate it... Because this is a classic example how terrorist mislead ignorant Muslims... Thanks...

I wonder what Islam is then ? The Islam you are referring to pretty much does not exist. Since the time of its inception it has been at war in some form of the other. The original Persians were slaughtered and converted. The muslims of the sub-continent of India are nearly all converted by force. The prophet might have been a good man and a messenger of God etc. but there is no dearth to controversy around him. Islamic nations distort history so much its abhorring. There certainly are some moderate muslims, but they are the minority. If Islam was so peaceful it would at least spare its Shia, Ahmedi and Ismaili cousins, but alas no, even they are not spared.

      • Nasrullah Mohammed

Mr. Lekarshi... I wonder what you are... and how serious you are in knowing the answer... how much do you know and how much you don't know....Anyway let me try and see where it goes... But read patiently if you like to know the truth...
So here is the answer for your questions....
Islam is a religion of peace... then how do we explain all the violence in the name of Islam... Islam and Muslim are two different things... The main problem we have is the Imams with little knowledge, misguiding ignorant Muslims with no knowledge.... these Imams are hypocrites... they lure people when they see a situation of conflict between two groups... they play with peoples emotion... there speeches are very convincing and they take text out of context and quote Quran verses... ignorant people just trust them and fall into trap of emotion... So these Imams shall be banned from giving any speeches...

To prove my point I will give you an example... Take Bin Ladin... he was banned in Saudi Arabia so he took shelter with Taliban... a perfect place with lots of ignorant people... they trusted him and fell in his trap... for your information Binladin was a playboy... a rich businessman till one day he thought he is a Imam... and fought with the help of CIA with Russia and became an expert in guns and making bombs... then he wanted to kill Americans when first Iraq war started... Long story short... a playboy turned in to self proclaimed Imam and caused most of the destruction... Like wise there are many Imams in Pakistan, Yemen and Afghanistan... these are the main places where the terrorism started... now don't mistake Palestine issue with these guys... that's a different story altogether...
India has 350 million Muslims... why there is not much terrorism there... because Imams in India are good... but time to time you see fights between Hindus and Muslims... that's pure because of political reasons... the politicians lure ignorant people not the Imams... The Islam does exist in India, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Jordon, Kuwait, Bangla Desh, Indonesia, Philippines... and so on... except few places I mentioned before where terrorist activities are encouraged... REST OF THE PLACES ARE FINE...
About India you said the Muslims of the sub-continent of India are nearly all converted by force. NO... NOT AT ALL... Why because if you know Indian history then you must know...King Babar, King Humayun, King Akber who even married a Hindu woman from Rajput family and she was allowed to stay Hindu... next his son Shah Jahan who built Taj Mahal... peace loving guy... till his son Aurangzeb implemented Sharia law and destroyed many Hindu temples... that was a mistake... he did... he did not understand Islam... finally British took over India many years after his death... so how Islam spread in India... For your information there are Four Big Imams came to India... One in Ajmer that's in the West 2nd in the North that's Nizamuddin, 3rd in the East in Calcutta ( I don't recall his name) and 4th in the South in Gulberga 'Khaja Bande Navaz' ... they were holy men had used no force... that's the truth about India...

There is no such thing called "Modern Muslim" that's wrong too... As I said in India alone there are 350 million Muslims... Indonesia and Philippines... etc...

Shea, Ahmedi and Ismail cousins are safe in India and in rest of the world...

Except Shea and Sunny are fighting in Iraq... That was a gift from Bush... Iraq invasion... Before that under Saddam Hussein both lived peacefully...

If you call yourself a journalist, you should know by now that professional journlaists always show a relaible source of information to prove their claims. What person with authority in the matter inthe USA has made such a claim "that Muslim cannot abide dogs?" An article without sources is worthless and amateurish. I'm sick of people lying and calling Islam a peaceful religion. If you read the Quran, you will know better.

Quran (8:12) – "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them"

Quran (9:29) – "Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued."

Dear Bob... I am a Muslim and I tell you Islam is a peaceful religion... so I will clarify the two references you just indicated...
8:12... First of all never mention incomplete verse... you took away THE BEGINNING of the verse... then presented the half verse to prove your point... Now what you missed is important... You missed the main object as well as subject... In this verse Allah is informing us about what he said to 'Angels'... This verse is regarding the 1st Crusade... when NonMuslims attacked Muslims... (not when Muslims attacked NonMuslims...) it's history my friend...
9:29... This whole chapter is talking about agreements between Muslims and NonMuslims... This is about 8 years after the 1st Crusade...when Macca was won... Now just for your information Macca was won without a war...So agreements were made between Muslims and local NonMuslims around Macca and Madina... and so on...
This Verse is also based on conditions... this is also a part of history when Islam was implemented... So Relax...
Quran has 114 Chapters and 6,238 Verses... please don't quote two or few verses and say it's Quran... If you want to say something about Quran then... First understand 6,238 Verses.... just glancing or reading without understanding is dangerous... As you know... Little knowledge can be dangerous...
What we need is more understanding... more humanity... not pointing fingers...
      SO IN SHORT....
      8:12.... It's history... It's the 1st Crusade...
9:29... It's history too... When Islam was implemented...

      Thank you...

Your rebuttal has nothing in it that says islam does not spread itself through terror. What was quoted from the koran was very general and has been taken by extremist as the word of the prophet, in which to spread islam by the sword alone. And by "The First Crusade", I hope you mean against the other arab tribes on the Saudi Pennisula, right? Not the First Crusade that occurred in 1098?

The same exact thing is in the Bible. The issue is one of context. The Hebrews did not just walk dreamily into the promised land, picking daisies as they went. They battled all those who resisted their invasion and embraced those who chose to accept the divinity of Moses. This was ordained. What was not ordained the one and a half centuries of aggressive wars by Christians a thousand years ago. Read about the sacking of Constantinople one day. They looted with abandon and shut people into buildings and burned them alive en masse.
This was not ordained and terrorism is not ordained. You don't hold up the inquisitors of Spain as representatives for all Christianity and neither should the extremists of the middle east be seen as representatives of Islam. No one has any business casting stones here.

II think part of the problem is that we as Americans are constantly bombarded with images of Muslims protesting violently and destroying their own communities and fellow countrymen and that just reinforces are beliefs that all Muslims are violent. Also because the loudest violent minority gets all the attention from the media the moderate voices of Islam are drowned out so there is this image of all Muslims being violent and intolerant. Also when we turn on our TVs we see these protesters burning the American flag which angers us and makes us question why do we send our tax money to these people if they hate us so much? Unfortunately this is a small minority of extremists getting all the attention, but it works both ways the recent protest for example at American diplomatic missions, all these protesters think that this film "innocence of Muslims" somehow represents our government or our people this film has nothing to do with me, but you better believe that Freedom of Speech is extremely important to me. I have never seen the film I do not want to see it and if these protesters had never brought it to the attention of the media then it would have never even been heard of. Also it seems from my point of view that Muslims demand respect for their religious beliefs, but Christians and religious minorities are treated very poorly and are not given equal rights in Muslim majority countries, so it’s a hard thing for us to swallow to respect your religion when you do not hold yourselves to that standard. I serve in the military and I have been to Kuwait, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Jordan, and Bahrain I can tell you’re from my personal experience that most Muslims are just like average Americans trying to make a living and take care of their families. The misunderstanding on both sides and allowing these small minorities to control our lives is ridiculous!

I'm a little puzzled as to why Ms Ali-Karamali is puzzled that Islam would have a negative image in the U.S.? Almost daily you can pick up a paper and read about an honor killing in Britain, Canada, the U.S., and we don't even hear about them in Islamic nation's for the most part. Muslim women throughout the Arab world are treated with less respect than dogs or cattle. Women can actully be imprisoned or executed for being raped in many Muslim nations, even stoned to death? In Saudi Arabia, the Holy Center of Islam, a woman cannot leave her own home without being in the company of a male relative, and woman aren't allowed to drive? Throughout almost all of the Islamic world converting from Islam to Christianity brings a death sentence, as does anyone daring to preach Christianity or any other religion in a Mulism Country. And to be perfectly honest I rarely see any moderate Mulslims on TV or in Print unconditionally condemning the Extremists engaged in terror, or or those calling for Fatwahs and death for a cartoon or book, although What I usually see is a lot of statements semi-denouncing terror, but also party excusing it as caused by the policies of the U.S. or Israel. I have some sympathize that more prominent Muslims don't speak out since doing so seems to put them also at risk, but what does that say? On the other hand there seems to be no limit in most Muslim countries on the hateful things that can be said or taught about Jews or non-Muslims. There was a recent article about an Egyptian Reality show where Egyption celebrities are in an interview only to have it disclosed to them that the interviewer is an Israeli Jew. The fun seems to be watching the reaction of the celebities as they launch into anti-Semitic diatribes, even assaults, until told that they are being punked, at which point everyone has a good laugh with those who are most viciously anti-semitic. And what is taught in most Muslim countries regarding tolerance for Jews, or really any other religion is horrific. Any discrimination or violence toward people of any religion in the United States should not be tolerated, but when I read the papers I read about more vandalism and violence directed against Synagogues and Jews in the U.S. than I do about Muslims and Mosques? The instances of intolerance directed against Muslims in the U.S. seems completely inconsequential to the intolerance coming from Islam toward anything and everybody that is not part of their religion. I applaud Ms Ali-Karamali for denouncing the intolerance, but it appears that her sentiments are but a drop in an ocean of hate? I keep hearing that Islam is a religion of peace, but what I see daily going on in most of the Islamic world doesn't look tolerant or peaceful?

        The problem with Islam:

THERE IS NO MUSLIM-MAJORITY COUNTRY ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH WHERE CHRISTIANS, JEWS OR HINDUS CAN LIVE IN PEACE AND SAFETY.

And there is no way for you to dispute that. It's a fact. That's why America does NOT want any more Muslims. You trash every country where there are enough of you to make up a dangerous mob.

Oh, I can certainly dispute your blanket, wide-brush claim, January. Let's start with Albania, the only Nazi-occupied country in Europe during World War II in which the Jewish population actually increased. And why did it increase? Because Muslims saw it as their duty to hide and protect their Jewish brethren, including those who were not Albanians but fled their from Christian countries that were turning them into Nazi authorities. Albanian tolerance still holds true today, not that you would be willing to admit that. It would go against your own ingrained intolerance, wouldn't it?

I'm sorry Nasurllah but what American's believe is exactly what is important in accepting Muslims into the fabric of society as the author desires. The belief that Muslims produce violence is what drives the fear that spawns the actions the author is writing about.
If Muslims want American society to accept them then actions speak louder than words, and the actions that get the most attention are violent and destructive.
I'm married to a Muslim woman from Iran, I love her family and they love me so I know the positive side of that religion but I also know that she can not return to Iran with a Christian husband for fear of a stoning death at the hands of the "loving, peaceful" Islamic clerics ruling Iran.

If Muslims want to be accepted in America, treated as equals and not looked at with constant thoughts of possible terrorism they need to vocally denounce the violent acts by extremists, prevent honor killings, child marriage to old men, stoning women to death on the testimony of a single man while it take four women to counter the testimony of a single man. Would you like me to continue with FACTS rather than speculation?

Is it possible to have a civil, open and honest discourse about Islam with the average Muslim? There is so much to be critical of Islam from its early history (e.g., how Islam was spread) to Its sacred texts, ahadith as well as Muslim behavior in the modern world. While Christianity and other religions have experienced their dark moments, Islam stands out as the only belief system that has intolerance, proscriptive violence and rabid hatred of non-believers firmly embedded throughout its literature. But the dualistic nature of Islam is used to effectivly mask its totalitarian philosophy.

John Geheran, when you interlace your question about a having a "civil, open and honest discourse" discourse about Islam with phrases like "proscriptive violence and rabid hatred", you yourself have blocked that discourse. As a Muslim, I see that you are NOT open to that discourse. You have already judged us as evil and have no interest in hearing anything from us other than what would confirm your prejudice. Rephrase your question, rethink the basis for you question, and I might consider conversing with you, but until you do, I have no interest in futile, useless discourse with a bigot.

We have so much potential, what a waste of time and energy on so futile concerns...
I truly hope mankind eventually will find the way onwards.

Everyone who is not corrupted knows that there is One Creator, The Lord of Hosts, before we were, he was. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. He gave us Christ to save us. This Lord whose love and Grace goes beyond our natural understanding created People, i, Obama, Romney, Abdullah Nasrallah, Bibi, Ahminejad(spelling), Putin, Mandela, in short all races. We are told he loves all but hates sin, that is he loves sinners but hates sin. We are further told the Lamb came down here for sinners like me. We are further told to test those who claim to be Prophets. Prophets of the one and true God are true and do his will. And one of my favourites we are told the first fruits amongst us chosen to rule with the Lamb are virgin Men chosen from every nation/race/tribe who always follow the Lamb wherever he goes.

Interesting little story. Let me ask you a simple question if I may. Do you think that if God (likely a man-like figure according to you description) really existed, he would – just out of boredom – one day tell himself: "Let us create man, and put him on trial just for fun. Should he behave he would join us in heaven and chant for ever amongs the angels, and if not burn in the fire for ever"?? What kind of god would that be? A "loving" one? An allmighty one? Would that be just? Or simply retarded?

I have many Muslim friends but life here in America and indeed in any Western european and Christian country is vastly superior from a freedom perspective especially for a woman. There are rights in place and laws that protect everyone. It is just sad that so many Muslims make war on this nation. If she needs further enlightenment I suggest a stroll through the Middle East, dressed in a Western way and unaccompanied by a man.. she will quickly find out who is more tolerant and who is not.

Could you imagine an alien invasion just because your religion gives you a green light to kill anybody or thing that isnt your religion? we alway show them based on resources as the cause of invasion.... never just simple religious motivations.

Muslims today are a bad example of following Islam. The true and real followers of Islam are not easily found. I would call past few centuries dark ages of Islam. If we look at muslim societies from 700-1400 AD, we find a completely differnet, very tolerant, knowledge oriented and sophisticated Islamic society.
Comparing US to today's muslim countries struck by dictators, poverty and all 3rd world social evils is not a good idea. US is a great country founded on principles of equality, tolerance and social justice. We never want US to compare to bad standards.

I am an American by birth. From several generations of immigrant Europeans. Fortunately for me I was never exposed to any religious beliefs. My mother worked hard and long hours to take care of the two of us. I became interested in God the Creator while at college studying science and physics! Surprised no doubt. Also, I never hated other people for stupid reasons like race, color or creed. I met the local Muslims and began asking questions. After three weeks, they explained that none of them were qualified scholars, but loaned me an A. Yusuf Ali translation of the Quran and encouraged me to read it thoroughly. I was amazed at how simple it was to understand and how "right" it seemed to me. Before the end of college, I took the "Declaration of Faith" and was later given a new hard bound Quran of my own. That was back in 1980. I still study Islam.., plus Judaism, Christianity, Budhism and other belief systems. I now have a better understanding of the " Truth". Not just about the Creator and His Creation, but of many aspects of human history. We are all being manipulated by groups that have been around for a very long time. By hiding the truth from us and causing us to hate and fight each other, they move forward with their sick agendas. We should all search for truth regardless of who or where it comes from. This must be done with an open mind and prayer. We must come together as a unified force if we are to survive! May all mankind find the truth whether or not they like what they find!

Believing in God isn't the problem. It's not what you believe in that is the problem. It's what you do with it that's the problem. I personally think when you get to extremes left or right, it is a problem. Think about guns, alcohol, food, evolution, religions, etc. I think just about anything you name can be a problem if taken to extremes. People need to work on controlling themselves. When people are parts of groups or cultures and they get out of control, it's up to the others in the group to try and stop the extreme behavior. I don't think other Islamists do enough to reclaim their religion.

      Adam:

From the hadith of Bukhari, volume 5, #234

"Narrated Aisha: The prophet engaged me when I was a girl of six. We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Harith Kharzraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became all right, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, "Best wishes and Allah's blessing and a good luck." Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's messenger came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age."

After Christianity gained dominance in the Roman Empire, they legislated death penalty for non-Christians in 435. All citizens had to belong to the official "Catholic" Christianity – the only other permitted religion was Judaism, and Jews were isolated as much as possible from the rest of the population.
When Muslim cities were captured by Christian crusaders, it was standard operating procedure for all inhabitants – no matter what their age – to be summarily killed. It is reported that the streets ran red with blood of not only Muslims but Jews and Orthodox Christians. Jews who took refuge in their synagogues would be burned alive, not unlike the treatment they received in Europe.

In 1208, Pope Innocent III raised an army of over 20,000 knights and peasants eager to kill and pillage their way through France. When the city of Beziers fell to the besieging armies of Christendom, soldiers asked papal legate Arnald Amalric how to tell the faithful apart from the infidels. He uttered his famous words: "Kill them all. God will know His own." Such depths of contempt and hatred are truly frightening, but they are only possible in the context of a religious doctrine of eternal punishment for unbelievers and eternal reward for believers.
During the dark ages and inquisitor era , Inquisitor Franciso Pena declared that: We must remember that the main purpose of the trial and execution is not to save the soul of the accused but to achieve the public good and put fear into others. Torture of suspects was authorized by Pope Innocent IV in 1252, and thus inquisition chambers were turned into places of abject horror.

In South America: Unfortunately for the Indians, with the arrival of Christians would come the intolerance for their indigenous ways of life: The Indian chief Hatuey fled with his people but was captured and burned alive. As they were tying him to the stake a Franciscan friar urged him to take Jesus to his heart so that his soul might go to heaven, rather than descend into hell. "American Muslims live in fear 11 years after 9/11"?
Muslims even fear to live with each other. As you reas this today, the Syrian Muslim government is still blowing up not only buildings but complete cities and murdering thousands of their own Muslim/Islamist citizens in the process.
The Iraqi Muslim Sunnis and Shiites are eternally blowing up each other’s mosques and killing thousands of their own fellow Muslims.
On top of that abundance of mutual murder, Muslims always boast on how united they claim to be.
Nevertheless, many Muslims who participate here, often make it sound as if life in a Muslim country were like living in a Utopian Shangri-Lan paradise society while they are on each others' throats.

Doesn’t she know Muslim women have no rights at all? Oh, sorry, they have some rights, such as:
    1) The right to an arranged marriage to a creepy–looking fat old man.
    2) They have the right to walk behind their husband,
    3) They have the right be forced to wrap themselves like mummies in hot and heavy burkas.
    4) Muslim women also have the right to be murdered by their husbands via a so-called “honor killing” without evidence, without a fair trial and without reasonable doubt. Hearsay is enough evidence for a Muslim woman to earn her right to be murdered by her husband.
    5) They have the right to a judge a jury and an executioner, it is called “her husband” and it is free of charge.
    6) They have the right to be deprived from access to legal counsel.
    7) Muslim women also have the right to be kept hidden and quiet to prevent the free world from learning how severe is their Islamist oppression.
Therefore, Muslim women have plenty of human rights.

The authorities still do not know who killed her neither if it was a hate crime; but how does she know if her own daughter or an Iraqi agent killed? The notes her daughter claims to have fund could have been planted by her and the alleged threatening phone calls could also have been made by a Muslim partner in crime to create an atmosphere of an hate crime Has anyone seen episodes of “Forensic Files”? In such TV show, many murderers get caught by forensic evidence; therefore, Ms. Ali-Karamali should wait for the investigation results instead of implying that it was a hate crime done by a non–Muslim.

        Cyrus:
What billions of Muslims? Muslims claim to be 1.6 billion so I can’t say “billions” as you mentioned.
Either way Cyrus, God already provided humankind a way to be in good terms with Him via the teachings of Jesus Christ. Jesus completed his task on Earth and returned to His Father. Therefore, all other doctrines and ideologies disguised as believer-friendly religions such as Buddhism, Mormonism, Moonism (Rev. Moon), Islam and many others are equally useless to humankind in respect to its relationship with God.
Although people can believe anything they wish; no one is going to force anyone else to leave a religion and forcefully adopt another. If a monk wishes to sit still and meditate for hours and hum religious mantras, so be it. If the Mormons wish to believe in Joseph Smith so be it. If the Moonish wish to believe that Rev. Moon is another prophet to who came to finish what they call “Jesus’ unfinished” task as they claim, so be it. If Muslims wish to rise their smelly behinds in a 30-degree-angle five times a day and point toward Mecca, so be it. But that is not all Muslims wish to do in the USA.
As useless, worthless and as much as a waste of time, resources and energy Buddhism, Mormonism and Moonism may be, they do not have an open agenda to destroy the USA via Trojan Horse as Islamists do.
As you may recall, biscuit-lipped Islamist Osama Bin Laden said he would not rest until he saw the green flag of Islam flying over the White House. Of course he is dead now but his brain-washed followers are still trying to fulfill his nightmare. Besides his followers, those “billions” of Muslims you mentioned, especially American Muslims, have the common denominator to destroy the USA in order to destroy Israel and to oppress every country of the world with the ideology of Islam. Therefore, even if there were many so-called “Good Muslims,” their common denominator is still the same.

      Dear James,
We tend to hear and see what we "want" to hear and see! American Muslim and other Muslims for that matter were loud and clear against the criminals who committed 9/11.If you Google "Muslims condemning 911 act" or something like this you will see that you are not correct. Here are few things I found:
There was a candlelight vigil in Iran shortly after the attacks, attended by "more than 3,000 mostly young people" (New York Times, 9/21/01). A few days earlier (9/15/01), the Times reported that "thousands of people attending a World Cup qualifying match between Bahrain and Iran observed a moment of silence." Palestinians gathered for a candlelight vigil in Jerusalem (Baltimore Sun, 9/15/01) As NPR reported, "Most Arab leaders were quick to denounce the attacks. Jordan's King Hussein, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri sent their condolences. Officials in Syria, Kuwait and other Gulf nations expressed sympathy for the American people and the families of the victims.

You, however, chose to paint all Muslims with the same brush stroke. You also have obviously never read the Qur'an, where it says, "There shall be no compulsion in religion" (2:256) and continuously speaks of the People of the Book (Jews, Christians and Muslims, principally) in nothing but positive terms.

I personally disagree with you. There are many forms of terrorism by different groups. When a group threatens violence or death on another group because the won't meet the first group's demands, it's terrorism. The news media is simply reporting what they see. The groups are saying, they are Muslim. They are followers of the Quran and practicing Islam. There may be some people in the group that are simply angry and hate America. However, the majority of the people are probably Muslim. I'm pretty confident Al-Jazeera doesn't call them terrorists in their news reports. Our news media didn't call the Irish Republican Army, Muslim Terrorists during their terrorist activities. I think most times, the American news has it correct when they show Muslims storming embassies.

when an arab speaks, an arab is lying. simple. islam dictates that the rest of the world is kafir and lying to it to propagate the islamic species is perfectly fine. islam has woven itself into american culture, one day, when it is ready it will push for change in it's favor using our very own laws to bind those changes, it is doing that now. then, it will be too late. in my humble opinion, we are getting what we ask for by being a socalled free and open society, which we are not. just by me making these statements i am going to be perceived racist and bigot when all i am doing is echoing the truth about their religion(cult) make no mistake, muslims can NOT, now, then or ever interface with non-muslims on equal ground. they only do now because it is in their best interest. oy, poor america is in for an internal struggle the likes it has never seen. what a shame. unfortunately, i lived long enough to see the blossoming of the third worlding of america, bummer. sharia law? good luck getting me to adhere, aint gonna happen.

Only the ones who do not accept Jesus Christ as their Savior are going to Hell; and that was written about 630 years before child-molester Mohammed came up with the deadly ideology called Islam. After Jesus came and returned to heaven, humankind does not need any other doctrine neither any other stand-up prophet as womanizer-Mohammed claimed to be. Only Israel had real prophets of God.
If we tell you the truth, you call us "Hate-mongers." We, and I, do not hate you; we, as Christians want everybody else to be saved for eternal life via Jesus Christ. Womanizing exists in the Bible, specifially in the Old Testament chapters. King David was a womanizer. Many sins were commited in the Bible in lust, envy and greed. It also states in the Bible God said it was wrong. God was not happy about that. But, we have the Ten Commandments to help us remember the big picture. That is what is important to me. Time and again in the Old Testament, when the Jewish people strayed from God, it states is so many words, God punished them. Many times, in Kings and Chronicles when the Jewish people strayed from God (worshiped other Gods, didn't worship per Moses instructions, etc), it allowed enemies to conquer them. So, the point is, we have the Ten Commandments. We have Christ's example on earth of how we should treat one another. Christ died on the cross for our sins.. No more blood sacrifices in worship is needed for a Christian. Anyone who believes this and accepts it will have a place in Heaven when they die. I'm a Christian and believe this. Can I prove any of it? No. Does that matter? Not to me. It's about my personal belief in my soul, between me and God. I have no right to kill anyone who doesn't believe as I do. Where in the Quran does it state that anyone who insults Muhammed is to be killed? I'd like to know the location and wording. People should be united in their faith, but that can't involve killing others who disagree.

"Islam is the second-largest religion in the world, and Muslims comprise more than one-fifth of the world’s population. No religion can flourish for 1,400 years without being flexible and adaptable", the article reads.

Ms. Sumbul Ali-KaramaliBut : Islam was spread by child-molester Mohammed's sword while Christianity was spread by God's Word. Who would not convert when they are told to do so otherwise they will be beheaded? The only ones who did not pervert to Islam were Christians who were beheaded by Islamists. So don't try to “sugar-coat” and embellish Islam because we know it is a deadly, useless, worthless and a totalitarian ideology. If you deny this, you are suffering a case of denial worst than that of Bagdad Bob.

        American_Are_Best:

Nazis used the Jews as scapegoats for the German faltering economy and it had nothing to do with any religion. Not all the rest of the German population, including Christians, knew or approved of Hitler's behavior against the Jews. Then again, most Muslims are so happy for the way Hitler treated the Jews; in fact, they wish he had completely exterminated them because he would have done the job present day Muslims wish to do.

But just like most Muslims’ entries I have seen, you seem to believe that all "Christians" around the world are responsible for the Nazis behavior toward the Jews. Muslims seem to believe that any atrocity committed by a non-Muslim it is automatically committed by all the Christian population of the world.
Due to the primitive systems of communications we had back then, the USA did not even know what was going on in Germany until it got involved in the war. The USA did not know about the existence of concentration camps until its Armies found them and freed the Jews.
Don’t teachers teach you how to be open-minded in Madrassa High Schools? Evidently, they don’t teach historical open-mindedness in Muslim/Islamist schools. No wonder Muslims do not seem to be able to think for themselves; just like robots, they obey their masters who send them in suicide missions.

On the other hand, Muslims “specifically,” in the name of Islam and the self-styled stand-up prophet Mohamed conquered many countries and beheaded people who rejected such deadly ideology. Today, in every Muslim terror act committed, the perpetrator specifically states the fact that they do it in the name of Islam.

You could debate philosophically that anything in life is nonsense, but that isn't the point. I think the point is, if you're living life to focused on extreme views (right or left) it can be bad. It is bad for atheists, agnostics, Buddhists, etc. It seems extremists have a hard time accepting something that isn't black or white, yes or no. I think shades of gray, common middle ground gives them problems. I think most religions focus on how a person (his soul) relates to God. I think looking into the eyes of another person and seeing their soul is amazing. When I do that, I can't help but think of God and wonder about life's existence. That is what religion is about in my opinion.

Anita: I have not forgotten American history neither world history, including Islam's history. I have a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and I have completed all the required courses to earn a Master's degree from The University of Texas Pan American.
I have not forgotten that Muslims went to all the North African countries and murdered all those who refused to accept Islam. Throughout the years, Muslims captured Africans and sold them into slavery. Islam did not grow because it is such a good religion; it grew because of the threat to be beheaded if its victims refused to become Muslims. When Muslims conquered other countries, they did it specifically in the name of Islam and child-molester Mohammed.
Europeans arrived in America when Christopher “Wrong Way” Columbus, by mistake landed on these shores. But Europeans did not come to America specifically in the name of any religion; of course many of them were Christian but they did not come to America specifically to impose Christianity by force as you Muslims distort and portray American history.

on the very day that CNN published Ms. Ali-Karamali's opinion, millions of Muslims decided to show the world how Islam should be.

Perhaps, Ms. Ali-Karamali should honestly ask herself that, 11 years after the 9-11, is it more fearful to live as a Muslim in the USA? or is it more fearful to live as a non-Muslim in any Muslim country?

After 9/11, majority of the Muslim world were sympathetic to us and condemned the barbaric act of 19 misguided souls. These are few pointers: (I know according to Mr. Jose M. Pulido, if we don't hate Muslims we are either naive or their agents!)

How many Coptic churches were burnt down by muslims mobs in Egypt during the "Arab Spring?" How may Christians were murdered and raped in Egypt and Libya during the "Arab Spring?" Muslim fear in the US!...Please CNN give us some real news!!

Some say that all cultures and religions have a few crazy zealots. But America has a stupid film maker making a low budget film, or a stupid pastor who wants to disrespect the Koran. We have very few people who do bad things in the name of Christ.
Muslims have entire crowds who want to kill & rape. Entire countries that want to wipe jews off the face of the earth. A religion who Imams preach violence and intolerance.
How often do the moderate Muslims speak out against the extremists?

      MM,

Our society has evolved. It is not that we are better because we are Christian and they are worse because they are Muslims.During the Europe dark ages, Muslim societies had a more advanced culture than ours!
Imagine how we were 100 years ago (lynching human beings) or how we treated our native people here. Most Muslim countries have not had a chance to go through our evolution, which started by French Reveloution. The majority of the Muslim Countries were under Ottoman dominance till 1900's and then under colonial rules, and then oil dictatorship. Democracy is a long, evolutionary process!
