After election victory, Arpaio says he wants to meet with Latinos

By Catherine E. Shoichet and Valeria Fernandez, CNN

(CNN) - The Arizona sheriff known nationwide for his tough stance on undocumented immigrants says he has a mission now that he's clinched another re-election victory: meeting with Latinos.

"I would hope to get together with the Latino community, if I could ever have them talk to me without screaming and threatening me," Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio told supporters as election results came in Tuesday night. "So I hope to get together with the community and try to explain what we do, so that's going to be one of my missions coming up."

Both the American Civil Liberties Union and the U.S. Justice Department have filed lawsuits accusing Arpaio of civil rights violations and racial discrimination against Latinos.

Last December, the Justice Department said it had found cause to believe the sheriff's office "has engaged in a pattern of misconduct that violates the Constitution and federal law" and, under the leadership of Arpaio, discriminated against Latinos through traffic stops, detentions and arrests and against Latino inmates with limited English proficiency by punishing them and denying them critical services.

Arpaio has denied any discrimination or civil rights violations, and one of his attorneys called the Justice Department investigation a "witch hunt."

I live In Arizona, I work directly with the community at the court in Phoenix, I worked for 2 attorneys and Actually to my knowledge the majority of Latinos in Arizona are U.S Citizens, most of them are born here in the U.S and some are legal residents, that have absolutly nothing to do with illegal immigration. the reason why these latinos hate Arpaio is because of (racial Profiling) why do normal U.S Citizens have to be harrass just because of their race? I'm not latino but I live here, I deal with everyone directly, latinos, asians, white latinos, black latinos, and it's freaking annoying that just because 1 latino out of 1000 is illegal they have to target the other 999 American Citizens. before you open your fat mouth you have to live here and know the facts, and know the nationality of each individual and I do have to check everyone papers in my line of work.

Arpaio has seen the writing on the wall. I can just see him waking the morning after the elections, face slimy with sweat. As he drinks his morning coffee he makes up stuff in his head to say and practices a smarmy smile for when he shakes the hands, hat in his hand, of the community leaders who will hold his family jewels in a vise for the next term. Smile Joey, smile.
