Penn State sorority sisters denigrate Mexicans in party photo

By Moni Basu, CNN

(CNN) – Penn State has had its share of controversy for a while, but this week it is getting some more unwanted attention.

The university's Chi Omega sorority chapter is under investigation after a photo with Mexican stereotypes surfaced on a social media site.

It shows a group of sorority members dressed in ponchos and sombreros and wearing fake mustaches. One woman holds a sign that says: "Will mow lawn for weed + beer." Another sign says: "I don't cut grass. I smoke it."

The photograph was taken at a Mexican-themed party around Halloween, according to the independent college blog, Onward State. It was posted last week on Tumblr.

The university's Panhellenic Council said it had received concerns about the photo and that the council does not condone derogatory behavior from members.

"The Penn State Panhellenic Council recognizes the offensive nature of the photo and is therefore taking the matter very seriously," the executive board said in a statement.

"We are addressing the situation immediately with the members of the chapter in conjunction with their national headquarters," it said. "Our council and all its members strive to hold ourselves to a high standard and are disappointed by any failure to meet these expectations."

Jessica Riccardi, president of the Chi Omega chapter at Penn State, released an apology to The Daily Collegian newspaper.

“Our chapter of Chi Omega sincerely apologizes for portraying inappropriate and untrue stereotypes," she said. "The picture in question does not support any of Chi Omega’s values or reflect what the organization aspires to be."

The connections to the sorority were discovered through members' names tagged on Facebook, Onward State said. The posts have since been taken down.

Penn State public relations director Lisa Powers said that university officials have had conversations with Chi Omega members and that the women have expressed "deep remorse."

"The students in the photo are within their First Amendment rights to express themselves in this way, although we are certainly appalled that they would display this level of insensitivity and lack of judgment," Powers said.

"Because the right of free expression is guaranteed under the Constitution for both behaviors we disagree with or for those that we support we are approaching this as a teachable moment to engage this group of young women in discussions about their actions and to further educate them about diversity issues," she said.

Powers said the national leadership of Chi Omega will have to decide if disciplinary action is warranted.

A statement from Chi Omega headquarters said, "Personal degradation has no place in our organization, even if such behavior is meant facetiously or in jest. The Chi Omega national organization is taking this situation very seriously and is being thoughtful and deliberate regarding any sanctions or educational directives for the chapter."

At least one student at Penn State demanded a direct apology from Chi Omega to all Latinos.

"This is not a joke. This is our culture," said Ariel Coronel, president of the Penn State Latino Caucus.

She was shocked when she first saw the photo and said the signs the women were holding were especially offensive.

"There's a huge drug war going on in Mexico and you have a sign that says, 'We will mow lawns for weed and beer,' " Coronel said. "It's wrong on so many levels. How can you think this is OK?"

The reactions to the incident varied on Twitter. Here are two:

Those are some classy women. Yes sir.

Big deal or not, it's certainly an indication of their relative maturity. But then again, one could suggest so is being in a Sorority in the first place.

Some of us actually went to school for an education and didn't smoke pot, get drunk and screw...my guess is none of these gals would fit into that category. But they're within their rights to do so if they want. I just personally think it's a waste.

Get over it. It was a private event, and was not done with the intention of offending anyone. As if other demographics/ethnicities/etc don't crack a joke about dumb white girls and post it/share it. Love the double standard. If they were running out into the street intentionally mocking a race, ok, that's just mean-spirited...but obviously nobody that was involved was offended by this.

Yes, it was a private function, but they're a supposedly an organization representing charity and other philanthropical services (their website). In other words, having good morals and ethics, which I can only assume it's by society's standards. Dressing up as negative Mexican stereotypes is certainly not in the spirit of their organization's mission. It is offensive. And yes, it is a double-standard because Latinos are valued as lazy, second-class citizens as this sorority group is showing. Latinos are metaphorically spit on, and this image perpetuates the notion that it's ok for that to keep happening; and now your opinion just makes it worse. This is not a private event as you'd like to think, or a banter between friends. This is a national organization who posted their images on a public forum (the internet). Now they're paying the price of their ignorance. The internet never forgets (especially if you google their names). Good luck finding jobs ladies, but I'm sure your parents or your organization will help (if they're just as racist).

      Stay classy Penn State.

I see, closeted bigotry and budding racism is ok? Stereotyping and mocking a group of people is okay if its a private joke? thats why there are so many closeted racists..deniability.

I don't agree with closeted racism but it's a reality. I confess, I make some unsavory jokes in private to my closest friends, but I will defend those whom I joke about in the larger context of a civil society. In some ways, I do it to vent my frustration of the individual who has done me wrong by attacking a group. I know it's not right. And those who know me understand this to be the context (I really hope).

But on a more relevant note, I've met some pretty powerful and important people in my life and the racism doesn't end there. They just get much, much better at hiding it. And I know these are prejudices that were solidified during their college years and never changed since. They just learned that it was offensive through time, and learned how to hide them (or expose them to close acquaintances), through trial-and-error.

Unfortunately for these girls, there's not much room for trial-and-error in the digital age.

I admit; I clicked on this because it had the word "sorority" in the header... That said; I'm pretty sure that if a group of Mexican or Latino folks got together and dressed as stereo-typical "sorority sisters" with signs that read; "will have drunken relations with you" or "bimbos for hire" we wouldn't be having this conversation.

If you take away the sombreros and moustaches, the photo speaks volumes about whitebread, upper middle class sorority life. Of course there's no racial/ethnic sensitivity here. Save for one girl who looks Asian, these girls all come from the same gene pool. "Teachable moment" indeed. Does the university or parent org of the sorority really think they're going to develop a sense of ethnic consciousness in this bunch? It's just short of an all girl Klan meeting, for crying out loud.

The real insult is when any "culture" cannot take a joke and laugh with others at themselves. If these girls really wanted to "insult" anyone – they could have done a much better job at it. This nation has so many problems to fix – what is done at a sorority party should not warrant any coverage or"debate".

Racially, Hispanics are from Hispania otherwise known as Spain, and by being from Spain makes them white Europeans. Now being ethnically hispanic means something totally different, which i FORCEFULLY disagree with. i am 50% American Indian (Kitowah or Keetowah Cherokee depending on tsalagi dialect) and 50% Irish American...so i have red skin and red hair....the EEOC calls me a hispanic because of this. I AM NOT FREAKING HISPANIC and NEITHER ARE THE MEXICAN INDIANS that come here or are forced here by drug cartels for a better life.

What are you talking about? The EEO doesn't classify people. Employers ask employees to SELF IDENTIFY themselves for EEO_1 reports, Currently, there are seven race/ethnicity categories: Hispanic or Latino, White, Black or African-American, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, Asian, American Indian or Alaska Native, and Two or More Races. If an employee declines to self-identify, you can rely on visual identification of the employee or post-employment records. Anyway, you could self identify as "two or more races".

I agree with you, the pc police are easily offended these days and I personally don't think it's that big of a deal. Just college kids being dumb. Regarding the note about cnn and other online news outlets, in my mind they live off our fears. They make their money off wars and murder, sometimes they just report the news, but I am sick of the speculative disasters, if that makes sense. They make money off people freaking out about stories that are only speculative in nature

I agree 100%. Political correctness has gone way to far these day's. I mean look they are college kids having a party and they made a decision that I am sure many of them would take back if they knew the drama this would cause but I am sure none of them meant to cause trouble. I mean come on what happened to people of any color being able to take a joke. I have friends who are hispanic and black and they found this hillarious in fact most people find this funny. It is only the select few who want nothing more than to start a racial war in this country that are making a big deal out of this. Its time people quit getting themselves so worked up over nothing. This country has much bigger things to worry about then a meaningless college joke. I was in college and I made mistakes but guess what thats what normal people do they make mistakes so get off these girls cases and find a real issue to talk about.

To that point you often see black comedians make jokes about white people and of course also black people, but if a white person makes a joke about a black person it is terribly racist, an atrocity, unacceptable, and etc etc. I am kinda tired of hearing everyone cry racism you can't say anything anymore without it being racist or offending someone. You know what? I care. I'm a 60 year old white woman, a grandmother and a human being. This isn't about free speech or the freedom to have a good time or anything else like that. It's about people giving themselves permission to pretend that they are better than everyone else, to pretend that being superior gives them the right to treat the rest of the world like their sandbox, to believe that no one else's pain and suffering means anything...and the right to mock anyone who isn't them. In other words, it's about a group of brats with a myopic view of the world around them and an atrophied sense of compassion. I feel sorry for them and for all the fellow travelers who shrug and see "What's the big deal?' If you don't know already, you are as pitiful as these young women. ... and THAT is the perfect answer to anything that happens like this! A Rant on Communist News Network is just a juvenile as the photograph.

This article was a waste of time. As a young and educated hispanic male im not bothered by it simply because i know my worth. Kids doing what kids do...acting like fools, we've all done it.

Lets ask Cheech and Chong if they find it offensive. Ha Ha. They were probably mad they weren't invited. This country is out of control, because sorry to offend but most people would find this humorous and their certainly is no intent by any of these girls to make fun of anyone or degrade. If you think that is the purpose you are a complete idiot. And we know there is no shortage of those today. I just want to end this by wishing everyone a MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!

Also...Mexicans don't even cut grass in my neighborhood anymore, their prices are to high. Their south american latino cousins do all the work now. The Guats have the lowest prices anywhere. They can afford to charge low because they have fake social security cards and dont have to pay any taxes.

Actually, she was very proud. I went to law school, my daughter is a professional in the legal profession. What are you?

It's time to get over "being offended". There are no protections from being offended, in fact the 1rst amendment protects speech that is offensive. Get a thicker skin. Just about anything could be offensive to someone, so what? Freedom includes the right to be judgmental, crass, rude, condecending, and offensive. Anyone who is trying to silence voices expressing such ideas is NOT supporting true liberty and freedom of speech, and in my opinion is being discriminatory as well. Stop trying to cloak yourselves in "we are better than you" politically correct garbage. You trample diversity by trying to force one "nice only" idea of expression!

Look they all got stoned and took a silly pic. On the job interview when the Latina who runs the company bring the photo up on her tablet, then that girl, first row fourth from the right, can explain.

Some thing just come back to bite you in the b u t t ......karma

Yes, I am sure it came from the bottom of their pathetic, little hearts. The fact that they went through the effort to do this, unfunny act, is what baffles me. Sorority lemming, "Yeah, let's put on ponchos and sombreros, hold stupid signs up and post it on facebook." How funny would that be?" Idiots. I am sure their parents are proud.

Seems like they are mocking Mexicans, NOT all Latinos. Please don't lump us into one stereotype.

These particular students all should be made to excell (grade B or higher) in Spanish 101 & 102 to graduate! Just maybe they will then learn to respect other cultures, by studying and learning about other such people.

I am an age 73+ anglo-saxon male of English/Polish descent. My lovely wife of 52+ years is a nauralized USA citizen of German descent. One principle we learned is that all people must show RESPECT for others in our country, the U.S.A.. None of us have to like one another, just show respect for one another.
