(CNN) – Penn State has had its share of controversy for a while, but this week it is getting some more unwanted attention.
The university's Chi Omega sorority chapter is under investigation after a photo with Mexican stereotypes surfaced on a social media site.
It shows a group of sorority members dressed in ponchos and sombreros and wearing fake mustaches. One woman holds a sign that says: "Will mow lawn for weed + beer." Another sign says: "I don't cut grass. I smoke it."
The photograph was taken at a Mexican-themed party around Halloween, according to the independent college blog, Onward State. It was posted last week on Tumblr.
The university's Panhellenic Council said it had received concerns about the photo and that the council does not condone derogatory behavior from members.
"The Penn State Panhellenic Council recognizes the offensive nature of the photo and is therefore taking the matter very seriously," the executive board said in a statement.
"We are addressing the situation immediately with the members of the chapter in conjunction with their national headquarters," it said. "Our council and all its members strive to hold ourselves to a high standard and are disappointed by any failure to meet these expectations."
Jessica Riccardi, president of the Chi Omega chapter at Penn State, released an apology to The Daily Collegian newspaper.
“Our chapter of Chi Omega sincerely apologizes for portraying inappropriate and untrue stereotypes," she said. "The picture in question does not support any of Chi Omega’s values or reflect what the organization aspires to be."
The connections to the sorority were discovered through members' names tagged on Facebook, Onward State said. The posts have since been taken down.
Penn State public relations director Lisa Powers said that university officials have had conversations with Chi Omega members and that the women have expressed "deep remorse."
"The students in the photo are within their First Amendment rights to express themselves in this way, although we are certainly appalled that they would display this level of insensitivity and lack of judgment," Powers said.
"Because the right of free expression is guaranteed under the Constitution – for both behaviors we disagree with or for those that we support – we are approaching this as a teachable moment to engage this group of young women in discussions about their actions and to further educate them about diversity issues," she said.
Powers said the national leadership of Chi Omega will have to decide if disciplinary action is warranted.
A statement from Chi Omega headquarters said, "Personal degradation has no place in our organization, even if such behavior is meant facetiously or in jest. The Chi Omega national organization is taking this situation very seriously and is being thoughtful and deliberate regarding any sanctions or educational directives for the chapter."
At least one student at Penn State demanded a direct apology from Chi Omega to all Latinos.
"This is not a joke. This is our culture," said Ariel Coronel, president of the Penn State Latino Caucus.
She was shocked when she first saw the photo and said the signs the women were holding were especially offensive.
"There's a huge drug war going on in Mexico and you have a sign that says, 'We will mow lawns for weed and beer,' " Coronel said. "It's wrong on so many levels. How can you think this is OK?"
The reactions to the incident varied on Twitter. Here are two:
@ChiOmegaPSU The incredible amount of racism put into your "mexican" party was disgusting.— Oscar Moises (@KidMacabre) December 04, 2012

The only reason anyone is complaining is because they are female and predominately white., because they get to go to college, because they are probably Christian, because, because, because. See how easy it is to make ANY issue into a PC controversy. The world of 24 hour news and instant communication media is destroying the human race.
because it's pretty offensive. thanks for pointing out the reasons it IS offensive. hahaha...
Those are some classy women. Yes sir.
Big deal or not, it's certainly an indication of their relative maturity. But then again, one could suggest so is being in a Sorority in the first place.
Some of us actually went to school for an education and didn't smoke pot, get drunk and screw...my guess is none of these gals would fit into that category. But they're within their rights to do so if they want. I just personally think it's a waste.
Obviously you didn't have much fun in college...
This is disgusting. It's the equivalent of wearing blackface.
No it's not. That was suggesting segregation, post slavery repression, extreme exaggeration of features and done on a PUBLIC stage.
Get over it. It was a private event, and was not done with the intention of offending anyone. As if other demographics/ethnicities/etc don't crack a joke about dumb white girls and post it/share it. Love the double standard. If they were running out into the street intentionally mocking a race, ok, that's just mean-spirited...but obviously nobody that was involved was offended by this.
Yes, it was a private function, but they're a supposedly an organization representing charity and other philanthropical services (their website). In other words, having good morals and ethics, which I can only assume it's by society's standards. Dressing up as negative Mexican stereotypes is certainly not in the spirit of their organization's mission. It is offensive. And yes, it is a double-standard because Latinos are valued as lazy, second-class citizens as this sorority group is showing. Latinos are metaphorically spit on, and this image perpetuates the notion that it's ok for that to keep happening; and now your opinion just makes it worse. This is not a private event as you'd like to think, or a banter between friends. This is a national organization who posted their images on a public forum (the internet). Now they're paying the price of their ignorance. The internet never forgets (especially if you google their names). Good luck finding jobs ladies, but I'm sure your parents or your organization will help (if they're just as racist).
Stay classy Penn State.
I see, closeted bigotry and budding racism is ok? Stereotyping and mocking a group of people is okay if its a private joke? thats why there are so many closeted racists..deniability.
I don't agree with closeted racism but it's a reality. I confess, I make some unsavory jokes in private to my closest friends, but I will defend those whom I joke about in the larger context of a civil society. In some ways, I do it to vent my frustration of the individual who has done me wrong by attacking a group. I know it's not right. And those who know me understand this to be the context (I really hope).
But on a more relevant note, I've met some pretty powerful and important people in my life and the racism doesn't end there. They just get much, much better at hiding it. And I know these are prejudices that were solidified during their college years and never changed since. They just learned that it was offensive through time, and learned how to hide them (or expose them to close acquaintances), through trial-and-error.
Unfortunately for these girls, there's not much room for trial-and-error in the digital age.
I admit; I clicked on this because it had the word "sorority" in the header... That said; I'm pretty sure that if a group of Mexican or Latino folks got together and dressed as stereo-typical "sorority sisters" with signs that read; "will have drunken relations with you" or "bimbos for hire" we wouldn't be having this conversation.
Probably because that would actually be funny.
I assumed this was the WSU chapter of ChiOmega celebrating legalization...
Gimme a break! Please! Political correctness run amok.
Isn't he dead? Hard to be offended when you're dead.
What is that to the left of the picture? A white chick dressed like an asian? wow, how far will these evil white sorority girls go? No matter what, I wouldn't mind attending one of their parties!!!!`
I would attend their party too. I hear the serve tequila and tacos.
My opinion of sorority girls remains completely unchanged. Sadly.
If you take away the sombreros and moustaches, the photo speaks volumes about whitebread, upper middle class sorority life. Of course there's no racial/ethnic sensitivity here. Save for one girl who looks Asian, these girls all come from the same gene pool. "Teachable moment" indeed. Does the university or parent org of the sorority really think they're going to develop a sense of ethnic consciousness in this bunch? It's just short of an all girl Klan meeting, for crying out loud.
i see some non-white breads in that photo.
Is everyone in Pennsylvania this stupid? Just asking.
To answer your question Mary. No.
Not that being Hispanic should give me a right to say something but seriously, people need to learn how to take jokes. People should be able to notice the difference between a joke and a racists post. Hopefully this doesn't get blown out of proportion and they get to stay on campus.
Unfortunately most of the world lost its sense of humor a while ago. We apparently only know how to be offended these days.
I'm latino; these girls are not mocking latinos for goodness sake. They are just having a fun time taking a picture. NEWS is mocking YOU making money out of stories like this one. Dang!! They are setting us up against each other...unbelievable!!
You got it.
Other than the signs, I don't find it offensive. Looks like a costume party. It could have been a hillbilly party and no one would care. Or how about a toga party?
I don't understand why EVERYTHING has to become a racial thing..... It's enough already. Looks to me like a bunch of girls having fun. Nothing else.
Come on people. Thy're college kids blowing off a little steam and having fun. Do you folks ever watch Saturday Night Live poking fun at everyone and everything! You are accusing them of intolerance and are the same for getting so upset about this.
i guess this is funny...i'm sure if Delta Sigma Theta or AKA had a party where they "dressed up" as Italian-Americans with greasy hair, wife-beaters and gold chains or Irish-Americans posing with whisky bottles and potatoes it'd be just as funny, right?
No!, it wouldn't befunny....it too would be offensive!
I love your sarcastic examples – great post!
Eric Estrada will be offended by you period. Cause you are racist.
Where do these people get that Hispanic is a race?? How ignorant are they! Hispanics can be of any race! Aren't Spaniards European? The Spaniards were the first Caucasians to land in the New World.
Someone mentioned "people of color", in my country that term applies to people of black heritage regardless of their nationality.
Really? Are people that sensitive? People need too lighten up. Ask a Mexican that cares. Most are too hard working to give a damn.
Who raises these monsters?
People who pay taxes, live here legally and send their kids to school instead of out to the street to mule dope.
I'm completed baffled at the amount of people who do not find this to be offensive. I'm a member of a Greek Organization as well as an Officer in the United States Army and I definitely hold our members to a higher standard and expect the use of 'Freedom of Speech' not cross the lines of racism.
How can we as a 'Nation' move forward unless we rid it of such degrading acts that we simplify as individual exercising "Freedom of Speech"?
Great post, DTR!!
Freedom of speach is not what YOU want it to be. Give it up with the Nazi like Politiacl correctness BS. Hold yourself to whatever standards you like but that is it. Stop assigning what you think someones else's values are to peoiple you know zero about. Try a little critiacal thinking for a change. As a member of the U.S. military you are forbidden to THINK, just OBEY, without any question. This is never a good thing. “All power rests on hierarchy: An army is nothing but a well-organized lynch mob.” –Edward Abbey
I will ignore the part where you used the word 'completed' instead of 'completely.' What I will address is that you are baffled by a party theme that mimics a sub-culture of Mexicans (it was a Mexican theme party, not a Hispanic one) that many of us have seen enough of, and that many more would see if they traveled to Mexico. DTR, really, if it doesn't make sense to you, then how good of an officer will you be when the obvious stares you in the face and you interpret it poorly?
It is my wish that all of these ladies have multiple Mexican babies. LOL
Did the girls' "deep remorse" come with the word "Whatever"?
At lest they are not abusing children. That's a step up for Penn State. Who cares if they dressed in hats and ponchos for a holloween party. Get over all this political correctness crap.
ONE EX employee abused children. ONE. There is ZERO evidence that anyone else at PSU knew the depth of Sandusky's depravity - after all, the state's DA didn't see it after an investigation, the state's Child Protective Services psychologists didn't see it, and the state's Department of Welfare didn't see it; they repeatedly approved him to adopt and foster children. And an aging football coach was supposed to know better than experts in the field of child abuse?? Or an AD?? Educate yourself on pedophiles; they fool EVERYONE. PENN STATE did not abuse children, JERRY SANDUSKY
Former staff members are being prosecuted for standing by and letting Sandusky have access to these children. You don't pay much attention to details, do you?
As they say, "Denial ain't just a river in Egypt!" LMAO.
Girls just want to have fun. They didn't shoot anyone, they didn't enter the country illegally – they were having a theme party and as in all parties they joked around. The real insult is when any "culture" cannot take a joke and laugh with others at themselves. If these girls really wanted to "insult" anyone – they could have done a much better job at it. This nation has so many problems to fix – what is done at a sorority party should not warrant any coverage or"debate".
Racially, Hispanics are from Hispania otherwise known as Spain, and by being from Spain makes them white Europeans. Now being ethnically hispanic means something totally different, which i FORCEFULLY disagree with. i am 50% American Indian (Kitowah or Keetowah Cherokee depending on tsalagi dialect) and 50% Irish American...so i have red skin and red hair....the EEOC calls me a hispanic because of this. I AM NOT FREAKING HISPANIC and NEITHER ARE THE MEXICAN INDIANS that come here or are forced here by drug cartels for a better life.
Mexican and Canadian are nationalities. Latino in an ethnicity, not a race. According to the Pew Hispanic survey, 36% of Latinos identify their race as white.
you are correct my friend, but how am i ethnically hispanic? (and believe me our GOVT calls me a hispanic) im Cherokee and Irish yet i am told by the govt to call myself a white hispanic.....i have 0% spanish blood in my veins. never been to spain...probably never will.
Um, the EEOC does NOT consider you "Hispanic" if you are part Native American and part Irish (Caucasian). The EEOC has a category for Native American. Not to mention that YOU are responsible for how your ethnicity/race are characterized in any census reports, whether the government's or your employer's.
go back and read again my friend...the eeoc...and i need yoiu to do something for me,....i need you to READ AND COMPARE ALLLLL races/ethnicities and not just your own. youll find out people from india are considered asians and blacks can either be caucasion (NORTHERN AFRICA) or african american.
YES it does LackOfEducation, especially when applying for a job.
Just a "theme party"??? Can't wait to see the pictuers from the Chinese New Year and Martin Luther King Day parties.....
What are you talking about? The EEO doesn't classify people. Employers ask employees to SELF IDENTIFY themselves for EEO_1 reports, Currently, there are seven race/ethnicity categories: Hispanic or Latino, White, Black or African-American, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, Asian, American Indian or Alaska Native, and Two or More Races. If an employee declines to self-identify, you can rely on visual identification of the employee or post-employment records. Anyway, you could self identify as "two or more races".
Who REALLY cares? I spent years living in Mexico and my wife of 34 years is Mexican and my kids are both half-Mexican. We all thought the picture was funny. And the girls are now expressing "deep remorse"? For what?. LMAO. Penn State and it's educators need to get a life, quit being so politically correct, and quit protecting and supporting pedophilia. Sure thankful my college degree doesn't say Penn State on it.....
I'm Hispanic and I'm actually a lot more offended by CNN's assumption that all Latinos are Mexican peasants wearing sombreros with ponchos and working doing landscaping.
Their heading should say "... mocking Mexican peasants... " because I can guarantee that there a lot of Mexicans that never worn a sombrero in their lives and were never peasants.
Mexican and Canadian are nationalities. Hispanic/Latino is an ethnicity, not a race. According to the Pew Hispanic survey, 36% of Latinos identify their race as white.
The reputation of PSU (main campus) has deteriorated greatly in recent years. I would think twice before sending my college-bound children there, especially when there are other affordable and excellent universities from which to choose.
As usual, the media making something outmof nothing just to rile up a particular group.
The USA has been invaded by a bunch of whiny crying cowards who only speak up in the USA and not their homelands which are extremely guilty of racism and discrimination. Grow up and determine your own lives. Quit looking for any reason to blast others. This country is full of feel sorry cultures and it is getting very old.
You absolutely nailed it!
Thirty-six percent of Latnos identify their race as white, according to the Pew Hispanic survey. Hispanic/Latino is an ethnicity, not a race. Mexican and Canadian are nationalities.
Seriously dude. Sitting here trolling and using the "grammatically correct" crap. Quit with your elitist crap and go back to posting on anti-republican articles.
The reality of the situation is this, there was no harm done in this. Its a way for CNN to try to make them look like they are committing a crime against nature. They are having a party. Is it ill tasted? Of course, but to call them racist and everything? Nah, just arrogant. We live in the 2000's. Lets quit calling racism on things like these. It is just a hindrance to overcoming real racism by causing a divide between people for no reason.
Ill step from behind my keyboard anytime you want.
And Carlos Mencia never mad a Latino Joke, Chris Rock never made a black joke, Jeff Foxworthy never made a white joke, and Ken Jeong never played up an Asian stereotype. I'm not condoning what the girls did. The signs were way over the line, but when we live in a culture that supports racial jokes, immature youth will have difficulty seeing where the line is.
while your comment does address a different issue altogether, keep in mind, there is no mention that this sorority is primarily latino. if all these girls were of mexican or latin dissent, then you would have a valid argument. when it's a bunch of prissy, stuck-up, caucasion girls playing on a stereotype, i find it downright disgusting! now, if they took this picture without the signs, then i would say everyone is being too sensitive.
My point is that our culture condones this style of comedy and immature individuals fail to see the line they are crossing because comics make no such distinctions.
I agree that this is something that's being blown up and overly PC but every example you just gave was someone of each race or ethnicity making fun of themselves. These were (mostly) white girls poking fun at another race, so your examples are kind of moot.
But read the last part of my last sentence. If we want maturity from our youth, we must give them maturity to emulate.
When you are part of the group, you have the license to make fun of it. You can make fun of your family, because you are part of it. Outsiders can't. Jewish comics make fun of Jews, but for non-Jews to do it would be bad.
those are comedians. that's what they do. these girls are not comedians. though they may think they are being funny, contextually it is just wrong. i know what you mean though. tv can confuse kids.
Many use proceeds from the performance of lawn care to purchase libations (beer) and use the clippings as a composting material (weed), while others burn the clippings (smoke) to create carbon, which is beneficial for plant growth. There is NOTHING offensive about the photo, except my sisters are being persecuted for having fun while messaging about ecology. You can bet if it were a FRATernity nothing would be said except about the cleverness of it. The oversensitivity of little boys is pathetic, so leave my girls alone!
Maybe they should dress as the children of European immigrants and hold up signs that say, "Will reap the benefits of the genocide committed by our ancestors and spit on others who come here to do the jobs that we are too precious to do."
That would be hilarious, huh? A real riot.
Kind of like what the Mexican nationals did to the Native Americans? Right?
I'm hispanic of Mexican descent.....I'm not offended, whats the big deal? Colleges kids....what do u expect?....I'm more worried about the press making a big issue out of this.....
The press is making a big issue out of it because their web page makes a little money every time it's loaded or refreshed.
I agree with you, the pc police are easily offended these days and I personally don't think it's that big of a deal. Just college kids being dumb. Regarding the note about cnn and other online news outlets, in my mind they live off our fears. They make their money off wars and murder, sometimes they just report the news, but I am sick of the speculative disasters, if that makes sense. They make money off people freaking out about stories that are only speculative in nature
I agree 100%. Political correctness has gone way to far these day's. I mean look they are college kids having a party and they made a decision that I am sure many of them would take back if they knew the drama this would cause but I am sure none of them meant to cause trouble. I mean come on what happened to people of any color being able to take a joke. I have friends who are hispanic and black and they found this hillarious in fact most people find this funny. It is only the select few who want nothing more than to start a racial war in this country that are making a big deal out of this. Its time people quit getting themselves so worked up over nothing. This country has much bigger things to worry about then a meaningless college joke. I was in college and I made mistakes but guess what thats what normal people do they make mistakes so get off these girls cases and find a real issue to talk about.
CNN is reporting it because so many people ARE offended. don't blame CNN... duh.
It's time to pull all funding from this mockery of a school. Shut the cesspool down.
Turn the campus into giant park and disband whatever remains.
Penn State once again has shown the entire world how backwards and dangerous to society it really is.
Probably more hate in your heart than the girls in the pic combined. Where does your venom come from? Probably couldn't get into PSU (or any college for that matter).
Heard of a little thing called Jerry Sandusky? Remember how he molested dozens of children?
Or when something happened more than 15 minutes ago is it too hard for your peabrain to remember?
I agree with the OP, the Feds need to investigate Penn State. Something terrible has infected that once proud school.
How is photo dangerous to society? That is an absurd claim grow up and lighten up.
I think old PSU can suck the big one but you are out of touch pal lol
It's *their. But I suspect you might have meant to say, "them there." So in that case you'd be ok.
This sorry-ity has too much time on its hands. It would be entertaining to watch what happens when their children discover Mom's indiscretion, right after the lecture the kid gets about how a college education is necessary. Cyberspace is wonderful.
They are portraying Mexicans not all Latinos. They need to aplogize to Mexicans.... Viva.
Mexican and Canadian are nationalities. Latino/Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race. According to the Pew Hispanic survey, 36% of Latinos identify their race as white.
The stereotype is still Mexican. You can claim ‘white’ all you like..that doesn’t mean you are.
Cnn ran out of cheating senators oil spills so fck it lets just post this bs story n hope it stirs up aome controversy please take this story off cnn its not even worth the print and im a latino
CNN reports news... this is news to people who are interested. apparently you are interested too (posting disinterest haha)...
i bet there's some stories out there the affect you, and many here don't give a rats.
Looks like they don't allow African Americans in their little racist club.
Latino/Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race. According to the Pew Hispanic survey, 36% of Latinos identify their race as white.
Sigh. Is Mexican a race? I thought a Mexican was a person from Mexico. What if they had Polish night and the girls held up a sign saying "It took 3 of us to make this sign!", would that be racist? Mock outrage is the saddest thing we have going on in this country. When are we going to grow up and act like adults?
According to the Pew Hispanic survey, 36% of Latinos identify their race as white. Don't forget, Hispanic/Latino is an ethnicity, not a race.
Very interesting the only girl not wearing a sombrero is the Asian in the corner of the picture . There is a message there I know it : ) . It would make more sense if the sign said " I don't mow grass I sell it " . I don't know any Latino that does drugs .
Yeah because Cheech & Chong is a real representation not a comedy act .
Go to Chicago
Asians wear sombrero's in Chicago : )
What I see is a bunch of pretty girls that need to take off those costumes. Now would be good!
Other than that, who cares? They're having fun!
How did they identify them with those fake mustaches on?
That's right, go after the girls yet allow Honey Boo Boo on television and make it a hit thru marketing. Then again it does generate money.
Honey boo boo is girl too.
In situations like this you need to flip the roles to determine if its racist. If a soriety of young hispanic females had a "Redneck" party, not only would there be no uproar it would be quite funny.
To that point at the school I attended every year all the frats and sororities had Trailer Trash bashes and no one cared. Just goes to show how hyper sensitive everyone has become to "racism" of every race except white. Just saying racism against whites is the last acceptable form of racism, but hey I really could care less because I think the stuff is funny, and no point in getting bent out of shape about a little joke.
Just another example how this country perpetuates prejudicial behavior. The comments here show that these girls are supported by a low-class sort of mentality. If that is the result that they wanted, then shame on them.
What would that matter? You seem to hate everyone, beginning with the krap you see in the mirror.
maybe you should just get to work, and worry about yourself Addison? you dope
If this is how you feel about America, then leave.
What's all the fuss? Next year the girls will probably have a party and celebrate Black History month by dressing in blackface and holding watermelons and buckets of fried chicken. Don't be offended. It's all in fun. (Sarcasm, for those who miss the point.)
I see that Penn State is going the way of the South. Your state is clearly a shinning light. Pathetic.
Ok one to mm sorry time to put ur white sheets away two now if they took that pic like a true latino way most of em wld be showing some skin like on telemondo now that wld be news lol is there anything better cnn cldve reported other than this just saying
You're an anti-semitic moron. Go back under that rock you crawled out from under. No doubt you vote republican.
Good point there .. how about a whites only TV station would that be racists ? Blacks have one and the Spanish (Mexicans) have a lot of them. Is this freedom of speech ? I think CNN trying to make a Mountain out of a ant mound..
It happens all the time – search "funny redneck pics".
I totally understand why people are upset. This is a bunch of white girls...if the situation had been reversed, everyone would be up in arms too! What would people say if a group of African Americans had a "White" party and dressed up? This sorority was wrong on so many levels. We have to understand, if we keep saying that it is no big deal, we will never live in an equal society!
It is no big deal. Media makes it a big deal. When Americans as people stop being petty and start working with each other, American people will re take the country. Til then, stay racist, stay ignorant, stay divided, and stay under the tightening noose that our gov. Is putting on our liberties
We don't live in an equal country here . Point we must have a black person at our post office to make sure we are not racist to blacks. We must have a Latino on the fire department so we are not racist to the Hispanics. We need the Oriental guy in the TV commercial to not be racist. So we will never be equal when it is mandated to have some one of a another race at what ever it is.
Asians, dude. Keep up.
Latino/Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race. According to the Pew Hispanic survey, 36% of Latinos identify their race as white. Mexican and Canadian are nationalities.
I clearly see an Asian girl on the far left. Don't blame this all on white people!!
Meh . Kids are idiots thus the whole over the top thing . I doubt the College Station Latino community will be up in arms .
I think us whites need to stand up for our rights. We need to call racism more often, just like blacks, hispanics, mexicans do...COME ON, LETS STAND UP FOR OURSELF, if we let every rasict comment get by and let whatever color do rasicts thing to us, who else will stand up. If let it go, and this is why whites are getting less and less.
Thirty-six percent of Latinos identify their race as white, according to the Pew Hispanic survey. Remember, Hispanic/Latino is an ethnicity, not a race.
Do you really thing that will make a difference? You are too funny.
New Rule... WhiteLatino, you can be white if you so choose. We don't really care. New Rule... Rose you did a good job representing Mississippi, uneducated, can't write a clear concise sentence, and you are a racist that can't even spell RACIST!
So you're saying it's racist for whites to stand up for whites?
It's cool. Me and my local Latina sorority normally have white women themed parties. We dye our hair terrible shades of blonde, wear gaudy jewelry, listen to bad pop music, and talk about why African children are thinner than us. We then do the daily ritual of watching House Wives of something County and prepare for a duckface contest.
Someone's going to be offended by that, but lol. Considering all the freedom of speech comments on here then anyone can do anything offensive. Being offensive works both ways, guys :P
You forgot about the contest to see who can use "Like and OMG" the most in one sentence.
Okay USMC, now go find your bottom and do your job!
I highly doubt you would find anyone that would think that's offensive. I think it would be pretty funny to see personally. To that point you often see black comedians make jokes about white people and of course also black people, but if a white person makes a joke about a black person it is terribly racist, an atrocity, unacceptable, and etc etc. I am kinda tired of hearing everyone cry racism you can't say anything anymore without it being racist or offending someone. Just my opinion though.
Are you more proud of your ignorance or your bigotry?
Neither do you when you cousins marry, you have two moms (no dad), or or your dad impregnates you.
While most of us would agree this was in poor taste, please remember they are sorority girls; by definition they don't get it.
I bet most (or all) of them have a higher IQ than you do.
People are so eager to jump at the chance to call "racism". It is harmless fun. Everything we see or do does not have to be so political.
Big deal !! So the girls were having a good time and who's to say they weren't on the mark on this one ?? Get a round over here of Coronas please ! LMAO !!!
I agree with you. I don't think this is a big deal... people need to lighten up. We can poke fun at cultural stereotypes on TV shows or in the movies but the kids can't throw a Mexican themed party. The amount of attention to this is ridiculous.
It's a PSA for Facebook privacy settings.
seriously. who cares. are we really that sensitive. what a lame story. media trying to make something out of nothing...again.
You know what? I care. I'm a 60 year old white woman, a grandmother and a human being. This isn't about free speech or the freedom to have a good time or anything else like that. It's about people giving themselves permission to pretend that they are better than everyone else, to pretend that being superior gives them the right to treat the rest of the world like their sandbox, to believe that no one else's pain and suffering means anything...and the right to mock anyone who isn't them. In other words, it's about a group of brats with a myopic view of the world around them and an atrophied sense of compassion. I feel sorry for them and for all the fellow travelers who shrug and see "What's the big deal?' If you don't know already, you are as pitiful as these young women. On the plus side, they certainly know how to apply make-up. Their parents can be proud.
war eagle = moron... I'm surprised you're even capable of reading, but nonetheless, I sincerely hope your warden takes away access to the PC llab this week so we don't have to read any more of your hate mongering. As you've stated, your feelings and opinions are not important to us so please go back to your cell.
Let the paddlings begin!
Big deal freedom of speech. If you are not happy leave the country takers.
Come on people, enough with the PC crap. These girls were just having a little fun. I dont see what is the big deal about this photo. Give me a break.
Not all Latinos are Mexican. Our Culture does not use Mexican hats or Ponchos. This article should indicate "Mocking Mexicans only" they are the only Latin Country that ware this type of hats and ponchos. I am latin and this article does not bother me at all. Even Geoge Lopez makes fun of the Mexicans and people do not get botherd. CNN find a life quit posting articles like this and indicating that all Latinos are mocked by this. Maybe the Mexicans!!!
The fact that people actually are offended by this is mind boggling.
What's mind boggling is that they actually took the effort to do this. It isn't even funny. I'm not sure what their point was. They just look like idiots. Hot idiots, but idiots nonetheless.
The comments at Penn State are so true. The ILLEGAL mexicans in Texas pay no taxes, get free school, get free medical and drink and smoke all the time. And yes most of them mow yards because no one checks the legal status. I can drive down any to two locations right now where they are sitting waiting for someone to put them to work with no taxes being paid
Open your eyes people, I see whites, Asians, Latinos and even black in that group. This isn't a white/Mexican thing, this is a group of young adults having fun. I'm white and can't jump or dance, does that mean all of us can't? Of course not, yet they still use it. Get over it and stop being so stuck on yourselves.
Wow, the future generation of American whites sounds like is going to be a smart one,,yah ...
How is this any different than that awful Wayan's brothers movie "White Chicks?"
Ah, hello,.....people....Like Cheech & Chong didn't make million$ making FUN of Latino culture! I'm sure they are glad they didn't try their 'shtick' of humor in today's politically correct world!
Is a 'rose' still a 'rose'? Just asking.
I love all the hateful messed up emails on here. It just makes me happier that racist white people like the ones posting hateful things are getting bred out of this world. One day we will be a race of people so mixed none of this will make a difference. Certainly appears so by the reelection of my president. Good bye racist white people. It's a different world coming and you won't exist in it. LOL
Oops, can you all go to school and learn how to spell? I am, ummm, talking about the whites on here.
They can mock all they want, in the meantime each one of my very Latina daughters will be quietly, in turn: a) Half-way through her post-grad. b) Working on her presentation for a business loan. c)Polishing up on her grades to get into medical school.
Like I said, they can mock and goof off all they want, the cold, bitter dread in their bellies will come soon enough in the real world after college, when they realize that they have to address women like my daughters as "no ma'am," and "yes ma'am."
I hope you feel better now. I guess you needed to state that you have daughters on the path of success. Sorry to break this to you (no I'm not).....you're not the only one with kids who are on their way to post grad, applying for loans, or attempting to get into med school. Sad when people have to solicit pats on the back.
See? This is why my eldest would not take an entry-level job in Georgia teaching the rednecks how to spell...
Funny how news media makes a bigger deal out of some college girls having a little harmless fun than the 12 million felon "illegal aliens" wandering around the country.Talk about mixed up priorities of journalists.
Very well said. :)
Cheech and Chong said it best, "Mexican-American take Spanish in highschool and make a C."
Love those guys.....
Just because you don't see them as you clean the campus restrooms at night doesn't mean they aren't there.
Great. The Penn State administration will be so mad they'll slap another penalty on the football program.
Small minded, racist, white people.
Nothing new here.
And Mexican became a race when?
Making fun of is fine for the most part. That's what parody is all about. But, the pot stuff in the photo is just plain stupid. They were probably taking E while doing the photo shoot.
I am Hispanic and my response is so what. Am I supposed to cry, get a bunch of my friends together and protest? These girls are ignorant, not Klansman.
THE best way to overcome stereo types is to show them their wrong headed ways – start thinking for yourself, go to school and make something of yourself. Protests don't help. Hard work does.
... and THAT is the perfect answer to anything that happens like this! A Rant on Communist News Network is just a juvenile as the photograph.
This article was a waste of time. As a young and educated hispanic male im not bothered by it simply because i know my worth. Kids doing what kids do...acting like fools, we've all done it.
Lets ask Cheech and Chong if they find it offensive. Ha Ha. They were probably mad they weren't invited. This country is out of control, because sorry to offend but most people would find this humorous and their certainly is no intent by any of these girls to make fun of anyone or degrade. If you think that is the purpose you are a complete idiot. And we know there is no shortage of those today. I just want to end this by wishing everyone a MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!
Also...Mexicans don't even cut grass in my neighborhood anymore, their prices are to high. Their south american latino cousins do all the work now. The Guats have the lowest prices anywhere. They can afford to charge low because they have fake social security cards and dont have to pay any taxes.
Actually, she was very proud. I went to law school, my daughter is a professional in the legal profession. What are you?
It's time to get over "being offended". There are no protections from being offended, in fact the 1rst amendment protects speech that is offensive. Get a thicker skin. Just about anything could be offensive to someone, so what? Freedom includes the right to be judgmental, crass, rude, condecending, and offensive. Anyone who is trying to silence voices expressing such ideas is NOT supporting true liberty and freedom of speech, and in my opinion is being discriminatory as well. Stop trying to cloak yourselves in "we are better than you" politically correct garbage. You trample diversity by trying to force one "nice only" idea of expression!
Look they all got stoned and took a silly pic. On the job interview when the Latina who runs the company bring the photo up on her tablet, then that girl, first row fourth from the right, can explain.
Some thing just come back to bite you in the b u t t ......karma
They apologized. Now let's move on!
So easy when its not you or your kids.
Yes, I am sure it came from the bottom of their pathetic, little hearts. The fact that they went through the effort to do this, unfunny act, is what baffles me. Sorority lemming, "Yeah, let's put on ponchos and sombreros, hold stupid signs up and post it on facebook." How funny would that be?" Idiots. I am sure their parents are proud.
Haha! LOL!!! Good one!
Seems like they are mocking Mexicans, NOT all Latinos. Please don't lump us into one stereotype.
BEST COMMENT OF THEM ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These particular students all should be made to excell (grade B or higher) in Spanish 101 & 102 to graduate! Just maybe they will then learn to respect other cultures, by studying and learning about other such people.
I am an age 73+ anglo-saxon male of English/Polish descent. My lovely wife of 52+ years is a nauralized USA citizen of German descent. One principle we learned is that all people must show RESPECT for others in our country, the U.S.A.. None of us have to like one another, just show respect for one another.
You get a thumbs up from me.
