DREAMer's clout increases in immigration debate

By Mariano Castillo, CNN

(CNN) - When Erika Andiola's mother and brother were detained by immigration agents this month, she jumped to action.

She summoned the help of undocumented youths like herself, known as DREAMers, and within hours, immigration officials were flooded with dozens of phone calls.

Andiola's mother and brother were released.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say the detention of the pair and their eventual release had nothing to do with Andiola's activism.

But that does not dampen her spirit. As far as she is concerned, the DREAMers snatched her mother from the brink of deportation.

"For us to get them to do that, it takes a lot of pressure," she said.

Her work, along with other DREAMers, has increasingly become a powerful voice shaping discussions on immigration reform, which President Obama has vowed to pass in his second term.

Dubbed DREAMers, their name is derived from the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, which, if passed,  would have granted some undocumented immigrant youth legal status in return for attending college or joining the military.

In 2009, DREAMers knocked on doors and begged for support of the DREAM Act, a bill that would have provided a path to citizenship for certain youth who came to the United States as children and live in the country illegally.

Today, the movement  is enjoying a certain amount of clout.

Andiola tapped into the DREAMer network to aid in the return of her mother and brother. But her activism also got her a job with newly elected Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Arizona.

Last summer, the Democrats gave the DREAMers their biggest stage, at the Democratic National Convention.  Benita Veliz became the first undocumented immigrant to give a speech at the convention, sharing her story of a high achiever with limited opportunities because of her status.

It's not just Democrats who are listening.

When Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, announced a new immigration proposal this month, he made a point to mention that he had consulted with DREAMers.

As Rubio began working on legislation to address the issue, his staff bounced the proposals by DREAM activists, said the senator's press secretary, Alex Conant.

"We believe there is broad support for letting people who came to the U.S. at a young age, grew up here and are undocumented through no fault of their own stay in the country," Conant said. "We will continue to seek their input as we work on a legislation to legalize their status."

State and national conferences are bringing undocumented immigrant youths together and introducing them to the halls of power.

"The power has been there, what is happening now is that that power is being showcased," said Jose Luis Zelaya, a graduate student at Texas A&M University and DREAM activist.

He says the movement is more organized than before, thanks to partnerships with more experienced organizations, and years of lobbying.

"We have planted a seed and hard work and dedication," Zelaya said. "Maybe a year ago we didn't see the fruit, but only because the tree was still growing."

In 2009 and 2010, Zelaya was among those who lobbied Congress for the DREAM Act. Back then, Zelaya remembers the activists "running from coast to coast, looking for recognition."

The bill ultimately failed, but the DREAM activists did not lose their momentum, and continued to lobby.  Last year, when President Obama issued an executive order granting a temporary reprieve for eligible undocumented youth to apply for a two-year work permit,  it gave the group credibility, they say.

Obama begins immigration push with trip to Vegas

The president's deferred action policy, similar to the proposed DREAM Act, "gave us breathing room," Zelaya said.

It also raised the profiles of the activists.

As Zelaya waited for his work permit, he began crocheting to make ends meet. He was invited to Miami to talk about his crochet business  on Univision. The hosts surprised him on camera with his work permit.

Off camera, some DREAMers find themselves juggling schedules filled with speeches, interviews and conferences at the state and national level.

Now, tracking down leaders like Andiola requires going through a press officer.

Many believed the DREAMers were fighting for a lost cause after the DREAM Act didn't get the needed votes, Andiola said. But they persisted. "We've been able to prove a lot of people wrong," she said.

Their next challenge is to lobby for immigration reform that would go beyond border security and help keep immigrant families from being separated, they say.

To their critics, who bristle that a group of undocumented immigrants have found an audience among politicians, activists and journalists, Andiola advises that they, too, organize.

"We really want to empower the community, not just the undocumented community," she said.

Every town should form Militias and go street to street and round them up,load them in trucks and dump them off on the Mexican Border........I am sure Many fed up Americans would Volunteer to help the gov out. We are tired of The Mexicans stealing our resources and bankrupting our schools and communitys, taking middleclass jobs and turning our citys into slums like in Mexico......we do not want the drugs, violence and donkey carts on every corner with Mexican flags plastered to them, they parade their Mexican flag at every chance they have.......yet they pretend they love America. They only love our Tax dollars and schools,jobs..........They all need to be deported no exception

As long as you come here by the millions.
Our spineless leaders will support you as long as you promise to vote for them.
Do not worry about the courts they will not enforce it.
And to our leaders do not say Bless America but say Bless Mexico for getting reelected.

I say, if we want to embrace the illegals, then let's just plain open all borders, then everyone will be equal, and have equal rights to enter here! And i will tell all my relatives that have been patiently waiting, going thru the process, I will just tell them they are a bunch of loosers wasting their time since there are other ways. Lets atop the charade and open the borders then.

It took my friend, who is a US citizen, and a USMC Vet, like myself, over a year to bring his wife of 5 years into the US. He paid around $8000, no complaints he knew what the proper way was. It ticks him off to see illegals doing it for nothing and them pilfering the system.

That is the biggest mystery to me.....why is there not a major outcry from those who worked so hard to do this the right way?? Are you not telling electeds that this isn't right?? Why ignore those who are NOT BREAKING OUR LAWS? Deport them as you find them, and let the next person waiting in line LEGALLY take their place!! It is a slap in the face to those immigrants who truly respect our laws.

Most of these immigrants work in restaurants, groceries stores, shipping docks, cheap hotels, farms, I really don't see American people lined up for those jobs. CAUSE THEY DON'T WANT THEM!!! The majority do pay income tax.

I love it when I see Dreamers on TV and they say "I have never broken the law". DUDE – by BEING here you are breaking the law. That is the fundamental problem with this group. They refuse to understand that their very presence IS BREAKING THE LAW. Until the undocumented people in the United States can grasp the REALITY that they are IN FACT breaking the law, we cannot have meaningful dialogue on immigration. The leadership pushing for citizenship for these people needs to pull their heads out of ...... and step up and start acknowledging this. They also need to come up with a plan to deal with the fact that all of these people they support are blatantly BREAKING THE LAW. I agree with the poster who said that this group of people is just poking the rest of us in the eye – and WE THE PEOPLE need to stand up and say NO MORE.

I'm so dismayed by Obama considering the Dream Act. How about considering the fact that my grandchildren are struggling to pay interest on THEIR school loans? Is this what's paying for the latinos to have first privileges? I detest their pushiness and flawed thinking that they belong here ahead of those who could REALLY be contributing to our country and who are willing to learn our language and wave OUR flag! It's time they, La Raza, and their sympathizers were all boomeranged back to Mexico or whatever country they came from. They have NO pride in the US! If they did, they would have come the legal route, been willing to speak our language like our ancestors before them, and not pushed their slimy way to the top of the ladder on the backs of those who already are citizens. Every corporation who hires them should also be deported to Mexico. Start writing to your representatives and the President about your feelings, people. They don't have time to read these comments. I thank CNN for the opportunity, though, to allow us to let the illegal latino community and their sympathizers know exactly how we true Americans feel about this situation.

From day one, we have been a nation of immigrents. Unless your ancestors were native americans, you are the product of immigration! If people work, pay taxes and do not commit crimes, they are contributing to a stronger America. Dreamers came here by no will of their own. They worked hard and earned an education that was paid for by the taxes of americans, legal immigrants and illegal immigrants. Put the money paid for their education to good use and let them make a stronger future for all of us. Same goes for students of other countries who have come here for college and grad school and want to stay. Statistics show that our education and inovation are slipping badly so when we have people who want to put their education to work in the US and want to innovate, welcome them with open arms. If they commit crimes, send them back.

It's simple, embrace the contributers and deport the non-contributors. Now if we could just find a way to deport all the americans who are taking and committing crimes, we would really be ahead of the game.

And most of them can't speak english good – our official language!
Go Home – we have too many of you anyway!
Build a border wall and arm it with computer guided laser-scoped automatic rifles and set mines in a no-mans land at the border. Problem solved – any illegal that tries to make it across will be turned into instant shredded taco meat.

If you compare the test scores of white and Asian children in America to white and Asian children in say, Canada, you'll find that the test scores are almost the same! It is the poor performance of blacks and Hispanics that are skewing the nation's results.

The worrying trend about this group of people and the laws that they are looking to establish, is that they would have essentially been the most powerful group of law breaking citizens to influence the political realm. Simply by being in america they have broken the law. I am truly afraid of any group of people that could actively break the law and put enough political pressure on our politicians to restrain their enforcement of the law. In essence they now open the door to any us law. If a group of people break the law peacefully and in large numbers they could in essence have that law overturned or amended. It started with marijuana it has moved to illegal immigration. In theory if there was a rather large vocal group of citizens who decided to hold onto automatic machien guns and did not use those weapons for harm could they if the group became large enough be able to amend the rules so that every american could own a machine gun. Now that is an extreme example that I dont believe would ever come to fruition but lets look at some real possiblities. Could cocaine ever be a legal drug if more people just decided to start using it openly. Could laws against public nudity go away if enough people decided to openly break the law. If enough school districts decided that they wanted to have student pray in school would it be possible for our government to stop them.

But, if you don't understand that our country is being irrevocably altered, politically, socially, and in some areas militaristically, and through the means of ILLEGAL entry into our borders of limited land, resources and wealth, then I doubt that your eyes can be opened to the harsh reality that WE cannot take in all the world.

And, it would be better still if they stayed in their own already corrupted countries and tried to save THEM from within, rather than take advantage of liberals' invitation to come here as the next generation of dependents and Democrat voters.

I sponsored my Polish Candadian husband and paid over $2000 to get his green card. He works legally, he pays taxes, he has assimilated. That's quite the canard since liberals have eliminated millions of taxpayers in their socialist efforts to attack the successful and give to their voter base sitting at home seething that they aren't given more.

But, if you don't understand the cost to our culture, our economy, our educational system, our sovereignty, our once great place as a "nation of laws", then there is probably nothing anyone can say to you to make you realize that to bleed ourselves dry trying to take in the world, legal and ILLEGAL, would destroy us and any chance many of these Third World citizens have in the world.

Why are Hispanics the only people allowed and supported in this country illegally. What about people from India who pay over 10K for their green cards and actually have jobs, pay taxes, have healthcare they pay for and don't get the benefits the Hispanic community gets. Why? Because Hispanics vote Democratic and most people from India don't. If we are going to change our immigration policy lets do it fairly not based on race and party affiliation.

Have you no regard for American workers who've been replaced by illegal aliens or the impact that illegal immigration has on wages? Illegal aliens drive without licenses or insurance in unregistered vehicles and flee the scene when they have accidents. Who do you think pays for those damages? Illegals use emergency rooms for routine care, then skip out on the bill. Who pays for that? Resources that should have gone to the education of American children instead go to the children of illegal aliens. How is that fair? It is the poor and powerless who feel the negative impacts of illegal immigration the most–just so upper class people can have cheap labor.

They are not the sweet little bean pickers they are portrayed by the media, they take middleclass jobs, bankrupt our schools and communitys, and turn our neighborhoods into Mexican Ghettos. We do not want them or need them here,we have enough problems to deal with let alone the illegal Mexicans. Now, let's make that slow realization that the only difference between then and now are the laws.

Now, you're right. The laws were made because there was a problem. Now, realize that that problem was racism and the purification of the United States and look at how freaking antiquated your freaking logic is. I'd use stronger language, but...

The fault is not with the system, no matter how bad the system works. Your logic is backwards and has no moral imperative. The fault is with those that jump the line, their action has primacy when looking for fault.

Your line of reasoning is regressive. Understanding the conditions under which choices are made does not purchase excuse for the choices. As an example but not a direct comparison, understanding ghetto life does not excuse living like a gangster, dealing drugs, killing people. Understanding the conditions that make emigrating to America from Mexico so appealing does not excuse or forgive Mexican's from breaking existing laws.

This idea that everyone is complicit in hiring illegal immigrants is interesting but it's absurd within the context you presented. Consumers who purchase goods have absolutely no way of knowing if illegal immigrants were involved in producing the goods. What this means is that completely uniformed consumers have no choice and therefore no real skin in the game, instead they are simply held hostage to scofflaw works and businesses. There is no complicity, there are only immoral businesses and immoral workers. The blame is not with consumers at large, the blame is with illegal workers and hiring businesses.

The idea that we should blame the minimum wage law is not to blame for the choices of illegal immigrants, illegal immigrants and scofflaw businesses are to blame for creating and maintaining the black mark you mentioned. The conditions under which immigration laws are broken should not be blamed for the choices of law breakers. What has moral imperative is not the economy and price of goods. What has primacy is behaving in a moral fashion. If Americans won't take jobs at minimum wage that illegal immigrants will take for less than minimum wage, so what? If that business can't thrive within the bounds of the law then the business needs to close or the business needs to change it's model or it needs to move to Mexico.

Isn't it illegal to hire illegal aliens? Another example of Democrats who think they are above the law and Constitution of this land, including the established methods for changing the law or Constitution. I am a white male TAXPAYING AMERICAN CITIZEN (only that last part matters). I am what most would consider Conservative. I happen to feel that we do need to provide a path to citizenship for so many of those in this situation who are productive members of our society. Although, I wholeheartedly disagree with any movement to wave a magic wand, ignoring established laws, and giving free handouts that legal taxpaying citizens must provide for. I believe the Dream Act has merit in many ways, but there should be zero financial handouts. Protect our border first, then let's find a way to welcome those already here to become taxpaying citizens. ANYONE who is a non-citizen and convicted of a felony needs to serve their full term in prison, and then be kicked out of the country. ANYONE who is a non-citizen and convicted of a misdemeanor should be deported. Anyone willing to behave like a law-abiding taxpaying citizen should be provided a lawful path to citizenship.

So, with each benefit given to those who are here illegally it is more encouragement for others to continue the illegal migration. They know that once they cross the border their children have free K-12 education, medical (through various clinics and emergency departments), etc. Once, I see that the tide can be stopped, then I'd be more willing to consider what to do with those with illegal status.

If one wants to migrate to the US the should pay double SS and Medicare taxes for the first seven years in the country and until they become citizens. We don't need millions more putting nothing into the system and expecting something in a few years when they can't work anymore.

Media like TV and internet have helped spread the word.... Well those 'anchors' have grown and are about to change the entire dynamic of this nation... TX will go blue and soon, you will have only one party – the Democratic party

The Republicans have realized their folly but now it is too late.... What both the Republicans and Democrats don't realize is that once the country goes to dogs, the hardworking american will find another country like Canada to call their home.....

The issue has nothing to do with the qualities or characteristics of the Mexicans in your neighborhood. The issue has nothing to do with race. The issue has everything to do with following the law of our land. Anyone that sneaks into the country is breaking the law regardless of their ethnicity or nation of origin. Most everyone that emigrates to America is looking for a better life, Mexicans don't get a pass on our laws just because they're closer than most. Giving them that pass is irrational and unfair.

If you find our current immigration need fixing then work to fix them. In the present you should respect the laws as they exist and expect Mexicans and all other immigrants to respect our laws.

These Dreamers aren't special, they've been pandered to by the Executive branch for purely political reasons. Obama cheaply circumvented our immigration laws during election season and he did so for one simple reason, votes.

Why wouldn't you demand that all immigrants, regardless of ethnicity ir national origin, respect our immigration laws as they are currently written?

Olga, this is the most abused are misused quote, especially when the "poor and tired" don't truly care about this country. They want the perks and none of the responsibility. Also, the influx of Mexicans due to the mere imaginary line that is the boarder in contrast to an actual OCEAN in which every other immigrant had to cross to get here greatly changes the Ratio in which America was able to take in the "poor and sick" and also changes the mentality of the people who come here. Mexico is not far away, it's a hop skip and a jump... they can go back any time if they really wanted to and many of them do. It's not like the Immigrants who came here from Russia or Ireland or Poland. When they got here... they had to stay here. And because of that the choice to come here was not just a financial one, it was a life changing and personality altering event.

In the latest election, Romney won 24 states and Obama 26, but Romney got slammed in the electoral college because of the winner take all provisions. while the margins would have been even smaller, it still seems Obama would have won by either the popular vote or by the district. The 2012 race was a closer race than the electoral college would suggest – that is what I think Congress is trying to address.

It is not too much to expect would be immigrants to our country to apply and file for proper visas like the rest of the world. It is patently illegal and unfair, abusive and cheating, not to mention dangerous, to pay big money to a human smuggler, hang out in a drop house and get trucked out clandestinely to some location in the interior of our country....then demand the right to stay. It is ridiculous, the law says it is ridiculous, but Obama and now, for the same reason (Hispanic votes), Marco Rubio approves. Absolutely, there are many Hispanics here who are wonderful people. Nobody denies that. But where do we draw the line on allowing people to bypass our laws and enter the country illegally? Right now, my County's demographics have completely changed as a result of our lack of vigilance to enforce our established laws.
Why have laws if they are not enforced? Those who wrote those laws and enforced them for centuries, understood the need to have them in place. Those reasons still apply today.
Sadly, we have let our compassion blind us to the ultimate negative results of this gross lack of enforcement of immigration laws. And we haven't even discussed the probability of terrorists from other countries entering through the same known routes. Also, it is not just law abiding Hispanics who come here illegally ... it is also those escaping their own crimes committed in Mexico.
Law abiding people in Mexico, who go through the process of wanting to come here legally, are equally upset, knowing our lack of enforcing laws hurt their chances and are unfair to them..
As a nation, we need to look forward into all the consequences of our lack of enforcement. If we see a need to speed up the process for those coming here legally ... great! But the issue remains we have allowed it to be very easy to break our laws without any serious consequences. That has become an invitation for others to ignore our laws too.

We still have not addressed the issue of illegal immigration – people entering the United States illegally. What the DREAMERs are dealing with, are the children born in the US of parents who are here illegally. Until we and other countries get a handle on illegal immigration, the flood will continue. And because we do not want to punish their children and those children grow into adults and inherit privileges usually reserved for citizens, more and more people will come here illegally. The rewards far, far outweigh the risks.

I am a US citizen who going to have a Bachelor's Degree in one semester. I deserve the degree because I earned it. The illegal immigrants do not even deserve a High School Diploma from the United States education system. The wolves in sheep clothing came and lived there illegally.

Higher education is a great benefit for me. Higher education is a privilege not a right. I earned Bachelor Degree of Science. I had worked hard for this degree. I also probably going to be Magna Cud Laude. United States primary and secondary education is a right but it should be only a right for US citizens. I never said that illegal are not hard-working. Because the illegals came there illegally, they should never have that right like the US citizens.
