As classes resume, Oberlin grapples with hate messages

By CNN Staff

Oberlin, Ohio (CNN) - A day after students at Oberlin College put down their books to focus on how to respond to a spate of hate messages targeting blacks, Jews and gays on campus, classes resumed Tuesday amid tension.

The messages included graffiti with swastikas, posters containing racial slurs and other derogatory statements targeting various student communities and fliers bearing racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic language.

A student's report on Monday that she had seen someone on campus dressed like a member of the Ku Klux Klan led the school to suspend classes for the day.

"I saw someone in what seemed to be KKK paraphernalia walking on a pathway, like, a pathway that leads to South Campus," the student, Sunceray Tavler, told CNN affiliate WJW. "Just seeing that and having that sink in, this is something that's real, that actually happens."

Police said they received a report of a student wearing a blanket on his or her shoulders but could not say whether the incidents were related.

Two students have been identified as being involved in the postings from February and will be subject to college disciplinary procedures, Oberlin police said.

Oberlin actually canceled classes because of a report of someone wearing a KKK outfit? What a way to show resilience in the face of ignorance!

KKK drawing graffiti with swastikas? Swastikas are not even Nazi. They were copied by Germans from Hindu Culture. Can KKK come up with some original ideas?

Actually the swastika was an American Indian symbol for good luck.........A little-known park in downtown Miami still exists, not marked but is still known by the old timers as swastika park, and predates the nazi era by decades.

The swastika symbol is found worldwide. Hindus, Native Americans, Tibetans, Germans and many other cultures all used it. Unfortunately, it has forever been tainted in the West from its use by the Nazis.

This is crazy. I don't understand these people going around talking about white power keep America white. Give me a break. America does not belong to whites, America belong to Native Americans. The white man came here from Europe & tricked the Natives killed thousands of them, stole their land & put the survivors on waste land. I hate when I hear people being discriminated against like Jews, Blacks, Asians, Hispanics etc..The white men went into Africa & took black people out of Africa & brought some to America & other places. Now you have these retards talking about keep America white. Blacks, Jews, Hispanics, Asians etc are here to stay whether you racist pigs like it or not.

Some of the people you refer to as being discriminated against disown or kill their family members if they marry outsiders of their race or religion. Why is it only whites that are accused? Remember the Black Panthers and clubs outside a voting place?

To be accused is not to be the only one accused. It is a crutch to point your finger at others rather than deal with the accusation itself.

Oberlin has repeatedly been in similar situations only to find that it was a minority student doing a "set up" like this so they could relish in protest marches and sit ins.
These kids fantasize about being civil rights heroes, but are frustrated by the lack of *real* racism...... so they contrive their own.
Amazing that this trivial story makes the national news.... it just shows how hard we work at pounding the carpet for crumbs of "racism!" and we're reduced to this.

Yea but the people that believe this crap have grown up hearing about this constantly when white people arent nearly as racist as other groups nowadays.

No need for Obama to "heal" anything- he's part white and was raised in HAWAII by a white racist grandmother and is not really black. Don't worry about "healing" because some of us don't mind throwin it back in your faces....and from what I've seen "you" don't like it coming back your way...

Apparently some people are still living in the 1930's. What is wrong with some people. I thought the younger generation were being more progressive.

I agree - it's the 21st Century for heavens' sake. When are we humans going to look beyond the melanin and see one another for who we really are - members of the same species. I'm really beginning to think that people with racial views may have some kind of mental disorder; having a very limited and skewed view and unfounded fear of others who are different. I can only imagine the hell they live through everyday, which results in them putting others through hell as well. An endless and sad cycle, indeed.

Black, white, tan, or any other color does not define who you are. Racism is extremely over rated. Its pointless, thats the truth no matter who you are. There shouldnt be things like this happening!

Absolutely! I run into a true bigot almost everyday, and several passive bigots everyday. True racists are a rarer, more toxic breed that must be exterminated due to its deleterious effect on society.

So…posters with threats like the one depicted in the pic don't cut the muster for racism in your world? Blanketing a campus with such fliers and posters is just a bad thing to happen to somebody?
