Biracial, lesbian contestant a trailblazer in Miss South Carolina pageant

By Moni Basu, CNN

(CNN) - At 7, Analouisa Valencia was crowned Palmetto Princess in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She relished it - and like a lot of little girls, she dreamed of becoming Miss America  one day.

In a few months, Valencia, now 19, will take the stage for the Miss South Carolina contest, hoping for victory and a chance to compete for the coveted national title.

But she's no ordinary contestant. She will mark a first in her conservative home state.

Valencia's father is from Mexico; her mother, an African-American. Valencia came out as a lesbian when she was in the ninth grade and took her girlfriend Tamyra Bell to her high school prom.

She was already shredding stereotypes of beauty pageants because she's biracial. But a lesbian beauty pageant contestant from South Carolina?

"I just really wanted to be an advocate for equality for everyone this year," she says on the phone before heading off to classes at Spartanburg Community College. She eventually wants to earn a business degree at the University of South Carolina.

Her participation in the Miss South Carolina contest is in part a human rights campaign: she is promoting rights for people with special needs (she coaches Special Olympics gymnasts), for racial minorities, for gay people.

She has already thought about her answers if the judges question her on this score. She will be perfectly open and honest about who she is, about their opinions.

"I want to show the judges who I really am," she says. "I want to show them how passionate I am about my platform, how passionate I am for being an advocate for equality."

South Carolina ranks low nationally on LGBT rights. It bans same-sex marriage, does not afford employment, housing or hate-crime protections for LGBT people and has unconstitutional sodomy laws still on the books.

For Valencia to make a run for Miss South Carolina is "courageous," says Ryan Wilson, the executive director of the South Carolina Equality Coalition, a statewide LGBT civil rights group.

"I think it takes a lot of courage for any young person to live openly and authentically. We are extremely proud of Analouisa," Wilson says.

He says beauty pageant contestants can be stereotyped, but they can often afford young women a chance to show leadership.

"She can be a role model for LGBT youth," Wilson says.

There hasn't been negative feedback, Valencia says. So far.

But she's prepared to cope with ugliness if it surfaces. For the time being, she's enjoying her title of Miss Lyman, her hometown just a few miles from Spartanburg.

She's been taking voice lessons every Friday. At the Miss South Carolina pageant in July, she will sing Leona Lewis' "Footprints in the Sand." She's confident she will make an impression.

Im over hearing about all the gay lesbian issues and all that BUT this is a beauty pageant and Miss America is supposed to be a representative of her country. Aren't there biracial and gay and lesbian people in the U.S.? Who is still only white? everyone is mixed with something. I don't see why she shouldn't be able to compete and win. not that they will give her a fair shake anyway sadly.

Yeah that's why black people can sit all day in the sun and don't look like a red hot chili pepper and don't feel like on either. That is why majority of people with down syndrome are white, that's why all it take is one generations of race mixing to destroy the white species. Please the only pure blood people are black people. That is why you don't see 15 degrees of black people like white people (Irish, Jew, Italy, etc..) Plus black don't crack we age graceful while white people look like the walking dead.

No wonder you white people die every year of skin cancer. You people are truly white devils and when you burn in the sun God is trying to show black people that white people are truly demons who burn red in the sun. So all black people have to do is sit back and wait for the melanoma to kill you off. God is truly good cause skin cancer is not a disease it's a cure.

Much, too much ado about nothing. Bi-racial, by its very name, means of two races. My husband was black, I'm white and my children are WONDERFUL. My son, a 15 year Army vet, served this country in Iraq twice, South Korea twice etc. My daughter is a successful singer/actress and a mother of a BEAUTIFUL 4 year old boy. How is identifying them as bi-racial in any way racist?????

    • Really?

"to be abnormal is now normal??"

Heterosexual behavior and homosexual behavior are normal aspects of human sexuality. Despite the persistence of stereotypes that portray lesbian, gay, and bisexual people as disturbed, several decades of research and clinical experience have led all mainstream medical and mental health organizations in this country to conclude that these orientations represent normal forms of human experience. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American School Counselor Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Association of SocialWorkers, together representing more than 480,000 mental health professionals, have all taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and thus is not something that needs to or can be “cured."

Guess who funds a majority of those studies to push their LGBT agenda. A majority of scientist would be crucified and lose their funding if they published findings acknowledging this particular behavior as a deviant choice. That's why they stay away from admitting the truth and instead appease the LGBT community.

Notro – It's not a choice to be religious, left handed, a sports fan or 'other than straight'. (I am none of these).
It IS a choice to act on it. I really hate my job, but I choose to keep going back for the money. You think I'm going to ACT on my feelings, in this job market? NO!
But if you truly are deluded enough to believe there is only one true orientation. you need to get out more. Maybe read some books. And while you're at it, think about this – .01% of babies are born with indeterminate genitalia. The doctor decides which is prominent, and does some snipping. But what about the brain, which may also be indeterminate?
The brain is a very complex organ. Nothing about it fits neatly in one box!

"Yes, Vic, she can, because unlike race it is a CHOICE"

All major medical professional organizations concur that sexual orientation is not a choice and cannot be changed, from gay to straight or otherwise. The American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, and European Psychological, Psychiatric, and Medical Associations all agree with this, as does the World Health Organization and the medical organizations of Japan, China, and most recently, Thailand. Furthermore, attempts to change one's sexual orientation can be psychologically damaging, and cause great inner turmoil and depression, especially for Christian gays and lesbians.

The scientific evidence of the innateness of homosexuality, bisexuality, and transgenderism is overwhelming, and more peer-reviewed studies which bolster this fact are being added all the time. Science has long regarded sexual orientation – and that's all sexual orientations, including heterosexuality – as a phenotype. Simply put, a phenotype is an observable set of properties that varies among individuals and is deeply rooted in biology. For the scientific community, the role of genetics in sexuality is about as "disputable" as the role of evolution in biology.

On the second point, that there is no conclusion that there is a "gay gene," they are right. No so-called gay gene has been found, and it's highly unlikely that one ever will. This is where conservative Christians and Muslims quickly say "See, I told you so! There's no gay gene, so being gay is a choice!"

Many of these reparative "therapists" are basing this concept on a random Bible verse or two. When you hold those up against the mountain of scientific research that has been conducted, peer-reviewed, and then peer-reviewed again, it absolutely holds no water. A person's sexuality – whether heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual – is a very deep biological piece of who that person is as an individual.

The fact that a so-called "gay gene" has not been discovered does not mean that homosexuality is not genetic in its causation. This is understandably something that can seem a bit strange to those who have not been educated in fields of science and advanced biology, and it is also why people who are not scientists ought not try to explain the processes in simple black-and-white terms. There is no gay gene, but there is also no "height gene" or "skin tone gene" or "left-handed gene." These, like sexuality, have a heritable aspect, but no one dominant gene is responsible for them.

I'm truly grateful for our donor and the invaluable contribution he made to our family, just as I'm sure the couples you've helped are grateful to you. I'm merely pointing out that "studded," while a term that might stroke your ego significantly, is a word applied to the breeding of animals. To put it in purely racial terms, she's either bi-racial or tri-racial; black and most likely mestizo, or if you don't consider mestizo itself a race, then white, native american, and black. But the comments that race is really an inexact or useless concept are definitely not wrong. Also, on an unrelated point, I have to agree with Black Howard Dean: "I love lesbians! Byyyyyaah!.... There is no such thing a race, let alone biracial. The term is meaningless and outdated. Race is often used to describe a superficial thing like appearance, which is pointless. DNA studies on US 'whites' or people who identify themselves as 'white' found > 10% had DNA from other cultures including African. For people identifying themselves as 'black' they had even more DNA that was not from present day Africans.

There is, of course, the "human" race which is part of the animal kingdom. From there, we go to perhaps a question of ethnicity or origin as to the continent or nation. Next we determine if our "heritage" is maybe a mix of different countries or nations. Finally, maybe we should note skin color if, for any reason it is important such as avoiding long-term exposure to the suns rays. I don't see "race" anywhere in these considerations other than at the beginning re: the human race. All the c- about black, white, etc. race is nothing but political c-. Time to give it up folks.

Sorry to see so much hate in these posts.

As far as the racial categorization, demographers use (racial/nation of origin group)-American in an confusing manner. Being (blank)-American gives an impression the being American is predominately and Caucasian characteristic; hence African/Indian/Hispanic-American. Strictly speaking only Native Americans are true Americans. Everyone else is an immigrant. For all those who see themselves as true Americans and are concerned about all those "illegal aliens", please check your backgrounds for when your alien relatives arrived here. Maybe then you'll be a little more sensitive to those who more recently arrived in the nation.

While I wish her all the best, unfortunately the playing field is no longer level. She is a very beautiful young lady, as all of the contestants will be. She should get no special treatment, nor should she get treated any differently because of her status. Ms. Valencia is absolutely in the running.

Black and Mexican. What a combination. She really is quite beautiful. And apparently smart too. And quite brave. I wish her the best. She should make quite a splash in South Carolina. An asteroid size splash.

Not that rare actually. When the Europeans arrived in Mexico they brought African slaves. In fact one of Mexico's first Presidents was Pardo ( a mix of Euro, indigenous, and Blk). Its just that after independence from Spain, Africans were deliberately erased from Mexico's history books and slowly blended in with indigenous groups. But thanks to DNA tests of Mexico's current population and the wonder of the internet their existence and influence can no longer be denied. Mexico was recently even forced to allow the 200k-4mill (varies on the source) still living within the country to identify themselves as Black on government racial census forms. Science is awesome.

And Mexicans are extremely racist towards African Mexicans in Mexico and African Americans in the USA.

        She's a walking dilemma.
