Biracial, lesbian contestant a trailblazer in Miss South Carolina pageant

By Moni Basu, CNN

(CNN) - At 7, Analouisa Valencia was crowned Palmetto Princess in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She relished it - and like a lot of little girls, she dreamed of becoming Miss America  one day.

In a few months, Valencia, now 19, will take the stage for the Miss South Carolina contest, hoping for victory and a chance to compete for the coveted national title.

But she's no ordinary contestant. She will mark a first in her conservative home state.

Valencia's father is from Mexico; her mother, an African-American. Valencia came out as a lesbian when she was in the ninth grade and took her girlfriend Tamyra Bell to her high school prom.

She was already shredding stereotypes of beauty pageants because she's biracial. But a lesbian beauty pageant contestant from South Carolina?

"I just really wanted to be an advocate for equality for everyone this year," she says on the phone before heading off to classes at Spartanburg Community College. She eventually wants to earn a business degree at the University of South Carolina.

Her participation in the Miss South Carolina contest is in part a human rights campaign: she is promoting rights for people with special needs (she coaches Special Olympics gymnasts), for racial minorities, for gay people.

She has already thought about her answers if the judges question her on this score. She will be perfectly open and honest about who she is, about their opinions.

"I want to show the judges who I really am," she says. "I want to show them how passionate I am about my platform, how passionate I am for being an advocate for equality."

South Carolina ranks low nationally on LGBT rights. It bans same-sex marriage, does not afford employment, housing or hate-crime protections for LGBT people and has unconstitutional sodomy laws still on the books.

For Valencia to make a run for Miss South Carolina is "courageous," says Ryan Wilson, the executive director of the South Carolina Equality Coalition, a statewide LGBT civil rights group.

"I think it takes a lot of courage for any young person to live openly and authentically. We are extremely proud of Analouisa," Wilson says.

He says beauty pageant contestants can be stereotyped, but they can often afford young women a chance to show leadership.

"She can be a role model for LGBT youth," Wilson says.

There hasn't been negative feedback, Valencia says. So far.

But she's prepared to cope with ugliness if it surfaces. For the time being, she's enjoying her title of Miss Lyman, her hometown just a few miles from Spartanburg.

She's been taking voice lessons every Friday. At the Miss South Carolina pageant in July, she will sing Leona Lewis' "Footprints in the Sand." She's confident she will make an impression.

      "Seek medical help if necessary."

The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American School Counselor Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Association of SocialWorkers, together representing more than 480,000 mental health professionals, have all taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and thus is not something that needs to or can be “cured."

"Maybe you should take a bioligy class, there is no proof of genetic disposition."

All major medical professional organizations concur that sexual orientation is not a choice and cannot be changed, from gay to straight or otherwise. The American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, and European Psychological, Psychiatric, and Medical Associations all agree with this, as does the World Health Organization and the medical organizations of Japan, China, and most recently, Thailand. Furthermore, attempts to change one's sexual orientation can be psychologically damaging, and cause great inner turmoil and depression, especially for Christian gays and lesbians.

The scientific evidence of the innateness of homosexuality, bisexuality, and transgenderism is overwhelming, and more peer-reviewed studies which bolster this fact are being added all the time. Science has long regarded sexual orientation – and that's all sexual orientations, including heterosexuality – as a phenotype. Simply put, a phenotype is an observable set of properties that varies among individuals and is deeply rooted in biology. For the scientific community, the role of genetics in sexuality is about as "disputable" as the role of evolution in biology.

On the second point, that there is no conclusion that there is a "gay gene," they are right. No so-called gay gene has been found, and it's highly unlikely that one ever will. This is where conservative Christians and Muslims quickly say "See, I told you so! There's no gay gene, so being gay is a choice!"

Many of these reparative "therapists" are basing this concept on a random Bible verse or two. When you hold those up against the mountain of scientific research that has been conducted, peer-reviewed, and then peer-reviewed again, it absolutely holds no water. A person's sexuality – whether heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual – is a very deep biological piece of who that person is as an individual.

The fact that a so-called "gay gene" has not been discovered does not mean that homosexuality is not genetic in its causation. This is understandably something that can seem a bit strange to those who have not been educated in fields of science and advanced biology, and it is also why people who are not scientists ought not try to explain the processes in simple black-and-white terms. There is no gay gene, but there is also no "height gene" or "skin tone gene" or "left-handed gene." These, like sexuality, have a heritable aspect, but no one dominant gene is responsible for them.

Many genes, working in sync, contribute to the phenotype and therefore do have a role in sexual orientation. In many animal model systems, for example, the precise genes involved in sexual partner selection have been identified, and their neuro-biochemical pathways have been worked out in great detail. A great number of these mechanisms have been preserved evolutionarily in humans, just as they are for every other behavioral trait we know (including heterosexuality).

There are many biologic traits which are not specifically genetic but are biologic nonetheless. These traits are rooted in hormonal influences, contributed especially during the early stages of fetal development. This too is indisputable and based on extensive peer-reviewed research the world over. Such prenatal hormonal influences are not genetic per se, but are inborn, natural, and biologic nevertheless.

Proclivities of a person can occur as a result of internal chemical composition, environmental influences and simple desires due to darker nature of one’s inner being. The question that needs to be asked is “does the person actually 'act' on the drive one desires to do?” Once a person crosses the line, then it’s 'pure' choice.
One can have inclinations to do something, but one doesn't have to physically act on the behavior.

Proclivities towards a behavior type are part of every person on the planet, whether one believes this to be true or not, except it is a truism.

I mean, I could choose to argue with you about it being a "choice," as you're hopelessly wrong. It's not a choice at all. But what difference does it make? Whether it's a choice or not shouldn't matter.

By the way the Christian hate groups that tried to prove that actually were proven wrong and years later even the people who thought they had changed went back to being gay. It's why all the experts in this country have stated you can cure a gay person to try and stop ignorant people like you from spewing lies. By the way, lying is a sin.

Kids today are taught to pass tests not know science when they see it.There has not been a gay gene found but the"ministry of truth" teaches that people are born gay. For most it is a series of choices based on environment. NAME A BIOLOGICAL TEST THAT SHOWS SOMEONE TO BE BORN GAY. There is no genetic marker.

It's adapted through the senses. If you were to take a "gay man" and remove his sight and his hearing and a woman were to touch him. Would he cringe? The brain becomes wired to what attracts it and it is not defined at conception or in the fetal stage or at birth but developed over time through sight sound and smell and touch. Remove those senses and you wouldn't know if you were gay or straight or what have you. But apparently it's genetic so even a blind man who couldn't hear would cringe if a woman touched him.

No, it is not likely genetic, but that does not mean it is a choice. One of the leading theoriesof the medical establishment based on many different experiements and studies is that exposure to inadequate amounts of testosterone while in utero causes the gay male's brain to form differently than a straight male's and in fact more like a females. Converse may be the case for lesbiens (exposure to too much testosterone while in utero).
In the end, wouldn't the mere fact that for 1000s of years people have been persecuted, jailed, tortured, and murdered for being gay prove that it's not a "choice"; who the heck would "choose" to do something that forces them into the closet or to be tormented?
Finally, did you "choose" to be heterosexual or do your chemical attractions to the opposite sex just occur? Exactly.

"the myth that if hоmоѕеxuаIality is genetic, then it is "normal." What the hоmоѕеxuаIѕ and their supporters over look is that just because there are many things that are "genetic", it does not make them normal, "

Heterosexual behavior and homosexual behavior are normal aspects of human sexuality. Despite the persistence of stereotypes that portray lesbian, gay, and bisexual people as disturbed, several decades of research and clinical experience have led all mainstream medical and mental health organizations in this country to conclude that these orientations represent normal forms of human experience.

An Aluminum Foil Deflector Beanie (AFDB) is a type of headwear that can shield your brain from most electromagnetic psychotronic mind control carriers. AFDBs are inexpensive (even free if you don't mind scrounging for thrown-out aluminium foil) and can be constructed by anyone with at least the dexterity of a chimp (maybe bonobo). This cheap and unobtrusive form of mind control protection offers real security to the masses. Not only do they protect against incoming signals, but they also block most forms of brain scanning and mind reading, keeping the secrets in your head truly secret. AFDBs are safe and operate automatically. All you do is make it and wear it and you're good to go! Plus, AFDBs are stylish and comfortable.

What are you waiting for? Make one today!

But Scott, let's take it from there side. If it's genetic, how do you scientifically determine if one is gay or straight? How many gays have had this procedure done to prove that they are gay? A person with Downs Syndrome can't say "I don't have Downs Syndrome. I don't feel like I have it". A medical test can easily be conducted to prove the fact no matter how the person feels.

      ".so sad she lacks Morality."

The Biblical condemnation of homosexuality is based on human ignorance, suspicion of those who are different, and an overwhelming concern for ensuring the survival of the people. Since the Bible regards homosexuality as a capital crime (Leviticus 20:13), it clearly assumes that homosexuality is a matter of free choice, a deliberate rebellion against God. We have learned from modern science that people do not choose to be gay or straight; hence it is neither logical nor moral to condemn those whose nature it is to be gay or lesbian.

"Your knowledge of scripture is only overshadowed by your lack of knowledge of science."

The scriptures actually say nothing about homosexuality as a psychosexual orientation. Our understandings of sexual orientation are distinctly modern ones that were not present in the minds of Scripture writers. A few passages of Scripture (seven at the most) object to certain types of same-sex expressions or acts. The particular acts in question, however, are sexual expressions which are exploitative, oppressive, commercialized, or offensive to ancient purity rituals. There is no Scriptural guidance for same-sex relationships which are loving and mutually respecting. Guidelines for these relationships should come from the same general Scriptural norms that apply to heterosexual relationships.

A person is gonna be beautiful regardless of any of that stuff and if people really think that matters than that's really shallow.

Years ago, when I first had cable TV at home, I watched a Geraldo show debating over relations between black and white and I was astonished by the polemics and how hot the discussion became. At the time I had never been to US. I remember thinking, as a teen, how dangerous it would be for me to flert a black girl if I went to US.

The racists like to use pseudo scientific arguments to make their points.
But here is the truth, the more genetically diversified a human being is, the stronger it is; scientists have proved a person is sxually attracted by someone who has different genes. It happens because it's beneficial to the evolution. According to Dr Claus wedekind research: "... On the following day, the women were asked to judge the odours of six T‐shirts each, and the shirts’ odours were judged as more ‘pleasant’ when they had been worn by men whose MHC genotype was different from that of the judging woman. In contrast, the odours were judged less pleasant when the MHC genotype of the odour‐producing males and that of the judging women were similar."

The hilareous and sad part is that you really believe in the "truth" of the nonsense that you spew. Please take a course in basic logic before ever writing another comment. You'll come to see just how dumb it is to claim that "God has been trying to eliminate" black people for thousands of years. Obviously, if there was an all powerful and knowing God in the first place, he wouldn't try and fail at doing whatever he willed. Therefore, using your religious based logic, God very purposely created and sustains people of color - otherwise they wouldn't exist and thrive as they obviously have throughout history up to the present. That's just one example of your pathetic attempt at puzzling things out. You are ignorance personified - and that is a logicial conclusion based on your own words and not petty name calling. I'm actually more disgusted with your stupidity than your bigotry, and that's saying something.

Slavery was a result of sin. Because Adam sinned, all of us were born "sinners". We are not sinners because we sin, but we sin because we were born sinners, or with a sin nature. Jesus came to set us free from both the slavery of sin and death, which is eternal seperation form a Holy, Just, Righteous, and loving God. I know you don't want to hear the truth or be set free from the sin nature you are living with. You want to believe a lie and believe that everything came from nothing. "Since when do we celebrate immorality???"

Janet, quoting bible verses that you believe to back up your bigoted outlook brings a bad name to Christians and what Christianity stands for. Go look up what the Old Testament says about women and "their place. " I'll give you a hint, you broke at least 3 of those rules before noon today and didn't blink an eye about it. While we're at it, let's discuss what the Bible says about divorce, adultery, and a whole host of other topics THAT YOU CHOOSE TO IGNORE. Live and let live, love your neighbor and embrace them. You were not chosen to be God's judge. I read somewhere once that he doesn't take kindly to that – he doesn't like his authority to be usurped, you know. He who is without sin, Janet. And I can guarantee you do not fall into that category.

Basic human equality only applies to human beings... it doesn't apply to blacks. You have to be human first. It's not racism, human beings tend to stay away from and separate themselves from other violent animals, as well. That's just simple common sense.

When in comes right down to it, most Blacks in America ARE "biracial". Back during the bad ol' days of Apartheid in South Africa the white South Africans used the category of "Colored" for ones like Maobama, this gal and most of the people who refer to themselves as "Black" Americans. i.e. those of mixed race. This little fact does not matter in and of itself, but it points out the hypocrisy of the komrade left in that they selectively use the category "Black" or "Biracial" as it fits the spin for their story.

@Scott- you are absolutlely correct. Most Black people are biracial or even mutil-racial. That's why there are so many different hues, hair textures & eye colors among Black people. However, they usually identify as the group of people that they resemble and/or are accepted by. Additionally, until recently, biracial & multi-racial individuals were not given an option to identify as such – you were either Black, White, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, etc. (antiquated/racist government classifications). These same classifications are now redefining America in ways never anticipated by the 'majority'. Now certain individuals want to proclaim the President's biracial ancestry, when in reality if he walked in a store prior to becoming president, he would be just another light-skinned black man and his ancestry wouldn't matter. Just like it doesn't matter for most Black people.

No sense lying to people, most Whites might be a mix of different types of Whites, but they are still White. The ones we refer to as "White trash", those are the ones that might have black DNA within themselves. It would explain a lot.

Everyone is biracial. Two black people can pro create a white person it is called albinism or dark skin can turn completely white through a disease call vitiligo; either way white people come from a disease or a recessive gene mutation called albinism which they are born from two black parents with white skin and yellow hair. two white people cant create a dark skin baby, scientifically impossible ask any doctor or biologist, dermatologist.

I find this whole story ridiculous. I am from South Carolina and involved with the Miss SC pageant. There are two things people do not realize about this story. One, she competed for Miss SC last year, lost, but there was NO talk about her being a lesbian openly in the media(even though she has had a girlfriend for years now). Two, in the Miss SC pageant, the contestants are encouraged to help spread the word of the pageant through media. Every story you have you receive media points. I find it very convenient that now that "marriage equality" and "alternative lifestyles" are the cool and popular thing to do now(well you agree or disagree with the subject), she has to decided to put herself out there. I believe she is taking advantage of today's media so that she can get more media points for the pageant and think this will give her an advantage, when in fact her outcome will be the same as last year, not even placing in the top 10. One last thing, it bothers me that in some of her media articles she comments about the negative feedback from other contestants and their parents, "not wanting to be in the same dressing rooms as her." This is so untrue, she competed last year, most to all contestants knew she was a lesbian and there was no negative feedback. Good for you Analouisa for knowing who you are at such an early age, but shame on you for taking advantage of a wonderful program like Miss SC just to get ahead. I sure do not want you representing my state.

She didn't make the rules of the pageant, she's just using her life experiences to her advantage. If you don't like what she's doing, then maybe you should complain to the pageant officials who set the rules rather than say she's abusing the system. Or is there some other reason you don't agree with her approach?

What would be funny is to pick some time in history where people were hysterical about the direction the country is going... well, that doesn't narrow it, does it? It would be funny to send this headline back to, say, 1970 as "News from 2013."

America is losing its identify as a result of compromising its values, ethics, morality, and character attributes to appease minority and special interest groups. Rational judgment and common sense are rapidly being replaced by extremists and ignorance. The push to ignore the real problems and outlaw guns, legalize marijuana, gay rights, reverse racism, etc. will eventually result in a nation that is rotting from within and will come apart at the seams and, for the first time in Amerian history, we will face foreign enemies on our own soil. Rome stood for a 1,000 years but it crumbled with many of the same issues America is dealing with now. Does anyone, possessing some experience and knowledge of histroy believe, based on the increasing rate of decadence, that this country will come close to holding it together for 800 more years??? The silent majority should stand up, exert the power derived from a majority and take ownership of their country back before its too late instead of relying on self-promoting, self-serving, clueless politicians who add no value. Remember, you asked and I only touched the tip of the iceberg and there are at least 100 million more just like me out there. The majority of us (Americans of every race and color) just spend most of our time working, paying taxes, trying to raise our kids to be good citizens and good americans to watch them fight and die in wars we should never have been in. We have been silent far too long and that needs to end if we want to save our country. Some of us know what we stand to lose and it is not a pretty picture or future for our children if we don't stand up and put an end to the foolishness.

Who says gays and lesbians can't handle jokes the same way straight people can? It seems like thats just an issue with the individual, not the whole. Thats a dangerous game you're playing labeling an entire community. One might get the wrong idea about you. As for special rights, what are you referring to? And as for your invention of a vaccine, perhaps you should spend more time trying to figure out what's wrong with you before posting such a ridiculous comment.
