What's the 'gayest' U.S. city? Not necessarily the most gay friendly

By Stephanie Siek, CNN

(CNN) - Salt Lake City, Utah, is known for breathtaking mountain scenery, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the 2002 Winter Olympics.

But today it was also named the Gayest City in America by The Advocate magazine.

The Advocate ranked cities according to its own admittedly nonscientific criteria, including the number of gay and lesbian bookstores, elected officials who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, and some edgier metrics like the number of International Mr. Leather competition semifinalists and the presence of nude yoga classes. This year’s list intended to examine cities that are outside the usual orbit of San Francisco, Boston, Miami and New York, and came up with several surprises - Grand Rapids, Michigan, Knoxville, Tennessee. Even Little Rock, Arkansas, ranked 11 out of 15.

Salt Lake City LGBTQ advocates were pleasantly surprised by the rankings.

“Well, you know, we’re all very proud of our community here, and we’ve done a lot of growing and empowering of each other and our allies in the community,” said Valerie Larabee, the executive director of the Utah Pride Center, but “we probably wouldn’t have a higher ranking if the homework was done … We don’t have naked yoga, or at least none of us know about it.”

(For the record: The Advocate counted one nude yoga class there, and one Mr. Leather semifinalist, too.)

According to 2010 Census data analyzed by UCLA’s Williams Institute, 15.36 out of every 1,000 households in Salt Lake City are headed by a same-sex couple. Salt Lake City ranks 81st out of 1,415 cities nationwide in its number of same-sex couples per capita.

The same analysis found that Little Rock had 7.51 gay or lesbian couples for every 1,000 households, ranking it 392nd.

Salt Lake City was ranked higher than several cities many would presume to be gay-friendlier, like Denver, Austin, and Atlanta. But Larabee said that Salt Lake’s top ranking shouldn’t overshadow the discrimination and lack of acceptance that many LGBTQ Utahns still face.

“I appreciate that there’s some humor in the selections, in the indices that were used, but we shouldn’t kid ourselves,” Larabee said. “We, like many of these communities, still have some issues that need to be addressed. While we have a thriving community here, we’re united because we have to be.”

Opinion: Attention Rick Santorum - here's how to support a gay child

Randi Romo heads the Center for Artistic Revolution in Little Rock, which serves as the state’s LGBTQ organization. She was also bemused by the city’s inclusion.

“Little Rock can be friendly, but we still have a lot of the religious right wing rhetoric that feeds into everything,” Romo said.  “Arkansas is one of the only states in the nation that doesn’t have a civil rights commission that can receive and adjudicate civil rights complaints. There are no local or state ordinances to protect [LBGTQ people] against discrimination.”

Here are the top 15 "gayest" cities, as ranked by The Advocate:

15. Denver, Colorado
14. Long Beach, California
13. Austin, Texas
12. Portland, Oregon
11. Little Rock, Arkansas
10. Grand Rapids, Michigan
9. Atlanta, Georgia
8. Knoxville, Tennessee
7. St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota
6. Ann Arbor, Michigan
5. Seattle, Washington
4. Fort Lauderdale, Florida
3. Cambridge, Massachusetts
2. Orlando, Florida
1. Salt Lake City, Utah

The words of the Lord were: "The wages of Sin are Death." These wages are paid in bacterium; The bio-mechanism transmitter of AIDS, Hep, & V.D., of all types, all elements reducing the quality of life while drawing nearer the Day and Hour of one's Death. That's the Truth, which is The Law of God and what happens when one ventures away from that law is a personal issue to resolve within. Jesus of Nazareth in his day didn't have any way of describing microscopic bacterium, which brought an ugly premature death and scars to those given to their lust and practice. Terms like: micro-scopic didn't exist and were unconceivable to man for 17 to 18 more centuries to come. Tragedy occurs when younger people skirt adult supervision and guidance, then get involved and hurt in adult themes and the worst of what we as a society hope to avoid flies up in our faces in full force. I cannot condone it, yet I can neither condemn it, but will not say I will never practice it ever. I choose to exercise a conscientious responsibility for the purpose of this reproductive act and hold it within its scope and perspective. You can screw somebody once or be friends with him or her for life… Take my advise: Keep it zipped and stay a Virgin Like me!

Every time I read the replies to such an article it reaffirms what I, as a highly educated gay male, already know – that the most vocal members of Amurrican society, whether they be the majority or not, are usually also the most ignorant, biggotted, backwards, hate filled, closed minded, childish, petty, supersitious and demon-haunted of the entirety of our society. We truly are a nation of fools and deserving of the downward glances we receive from other, more civilized countries.

So you could use clever spacing for inappropriate words or spew hate and hide behind God? I feel sorry for whoever has to live with you! By the way I never once cracked a smile at your comments and not because I am offended, it was because it wasn't funny and a hormonal fourteen year old boy could come up with better lines than that. Keep working on some puchlines and leave the gays alone most of them have more class in their pinky finger than you do in your entire body. Now you have a nice day 🙂

      Bunnie,

If you care so much about saving lives, why aren't you trashing the MUCH GREATER number of hypocritical Christians who commit adultery by remarrying? There's far fewer gays. Just pick and choose.

      • Bunnie

I'm sorry but I can't save any lives. That is something that each individual has to choose for himself. Also, trashing others doesn't get any positive results. It is not my job to trash anyone. I will quote the word of God when I can and the rest is up to the Holy Spirit.

No matter what the sin, if we repent and ask God's forgiveness he is faithful to forgive us. But he does expect us to not keep committing the sin over and over if we were sincere in asking forgiveness. When I saw this article I just felt led to speak the words of the scriptures, not just for this subject but for anything that grieves the heart of God. Repenting of all of your sins and giving your life to Jesus is salvation for eternity. Don't get stuck on just one sin. Christians sin also because they are still human but if they are true Chrisitians they are convicted of their sin by the Holy Spirit and they ask forgiveness. It is such an amazing gift that God offers all of us. Why would you refuse it?

Never forget that there are many LGBT servicemen and women who served even as their government and superiors attempted to portray them as lesser people who shouldn't be able to serve their nation unless they hide behind a lie. 5/20/11 – Fifty-three percent of Americans support making gay marriage legal, a Gallup poll showed on Friday, a marked reversal from just a year ago when an equal majority opposed same-s-x matrimony.

The latest Gallup findings are in line with two earlier national polls this spring that show support for legally recognized gay marriage has, in recent months, gained a newfound majority among Americans.

Gay people aren't helping their cause with items such as "Nude Yoga". Essentially they are making themselves out to be a fringe group like those in nudist camps. "Nude Yoga" simply promotes the mentality that gays are promiscuous and reinforces the concept they don't need to be married because marriage would would just a be a chic, trendy thing to do and not something to be taken seriously. Maybe "The Advocate" is for stereotypical, limp wristed, flamboyant gay people who design clothes.... Be curious to know how many gays take "the advocate" seriously.

As a resident of Salt Lake City, the one thing I can say is that the people of this city and state are believers of the fact that we all originate form the same God. We are taught to love the sinner, not the sin. You can choose to be whatever you want, you can live your life as you see fit. What everyone has to understand is that for every choice, there is a consequence. As long as you can accept the consequences of your choices and be prepared to answer to your Creator for those choices, well then, go for it! The day will come that we all stand before God and explain those choices we have made. I only hope that I can do so according to those things I know to be true. One of those is that God loves all of his children, not some, but ALL. Make your Father pleased with your actions.

As a gay man, I do not have s e x with women, I have s e x with men. Thus, I do not lie with mankind as with womankind. This Scripture was not intended to condemn h o m o s e x u a l i t y.

I very much have faith in God, but the bible is useless to me. For example, if you were to look at a bible published prior to the 20th century you might be surprised to find that NONE of the references that would make one believe that gay is a sin existed. This only one reason I can not hold faith in that book. I cant hold faith in something that changes every time someone is unhappy about something.

Casey, friend, you are incorrect in stating that the Bible doesn't condemn such practices. There are no shortage of verses condemning this strange behavior. Jesus Himself said:"For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave unto his wife and they twain (TWO) shall be ONE flesh." The Old Testament verses are out, they were innappropriate after Jesus' death on the Cross. Jesus forever ended the blood sacrifice and earthly punishments for sin. But what we do in this life, will go before us into the next....we better know our Lord as He desires us to know Him.

would it really change anything if it was proven that people are born gay ? would would it change. Peaple are born black and that never stopped anyone from hanging them from trees. I think gay people need to get over the whole I was born this way propoganda. Would it really be so awful if it was a choice. I think it would be empowering . To say I was born this way and I had no choice just screams weakness to me.

Well.... interesting who say being gay is not natural, that we are made to just to procreate. Lets look at this in perspective shall we?
The world as we know is already over populated, many child and families are homeless or starving, especially in third world countries, many "natural" humans who procreate...should not even have children. Many children are in foster care or dont have parents. Gays bring that balance back and often try to adopt those children who have nobody to love or care for them and NO not to make them gay as small ignorant people often think. It doesn't work that way! The world needs balance, too much of anything is not good, that even includes over population for procreating life. This can cause imbalance in life and create many problems. So the world is the way it suppose to be, whats out of balance is how we treat each other...something to think about

It seems to me that "The Advocate" may have issued that list as an intentional attempt to stir controversy instead of providing an meaningful information. Unfortunately, if any closeted gay person living in an intolerant (ie: bigoted) non-gay area actually takes the list seriously and decides to move to one of the top cities of this silly list - I wonder if they might find several of these so-called "gay cities" even more bigoted and less gay-friendly than where they started. It sounds as if "The Advocate" had a bunch of silly drunk and/or high kids come up with the silly & absurd criteria for "gayness" and used those criteria to compile their list - if so, they should have commented that the list was meant as a JOKE. If they created that list and thought it was serious - then that publication has become a joke!

The thing is that in Utah, populations are tightly packed. SLC is the liberal bastion of the state where most people are more conservative than Rush Limbaugh. The LGBT community concentrates in Sugarhouse and other locations around SLC. If you took a snapshot of the whole state, the numbers of members of this community would be about the same as anywhere else. However, its a very intolerant area and I certainly don't think its an easy place to live and be gay.

The definition of natural is "occurring in nature." How can something which occurs in nature be unnatural? That's illogical: a thing cannot be both A and not-A. Either you are not fluent in English or you are just making up your own definitions of words. Furthermore, you clearly lack even basic knowledge of the mechanisms of heredity and the human gastrointestinal system. Why don't you go play with your toys and let the grown-ups talk?

the issue is not what anyone else does in bed, the issue is that those that don't want anyone to care what they do in bed, want to redefine marriage. That is the ONLY issue I have with the gay movement...just call it a civil union and respect 3000 year old definition of marriage..is that so hard to do? Baseball and Softball are basically the same game, but because of different equipment, we've decided to call softball, softball, not Baseball. Ya dig, brother?

Marriage for thousands of years was arranged and little more than a legal exchange of property between families. The definition has already been changed.

Bill, it's just that type of disrespect given to the tradition that creates such strong opposition to your cause and slows down the very process of getting what you want. Keep pushing and you're going to get a lot of push back and if you look at state laws, the numbers are not on your side, my friend. You ask for tolerance, show some tolerance and respect and I bet you'll move your cause along alot quicker.

Hate is tough word, let me re-phrase that...its the one thing I have a lot of 'difficulty" with. Good for you and your partner and your civil union. The essence of life is love and if that is what you have, then I'm down with that. I hope you can respect my position that there is nothing wrong with respecting a 3000 year old tradition of marriage as being defined between a man and a woman. If all the rights are exactly the same but it's called a civil union, why would anyone have an issue?

Straight guy, lived in SF and it's a great city...amazingly beautiful city and area. I would still live their but the taxes, the liberalism and the politics like the sanctuary city status was without a doubt the reason I moved out of state. Mostly the taxes..the state is highly dysfunctional from years of a liberal spend now, worry about it later culture in Sacramento. More and more folks like me are moving out of state and it's too bad, California is awesome..just poorly managed. My point is this...the gay culture there was never a real factor, I barely noticed it except among the disturbed, flaming, extreme group of the gay community who really f's it up,in my opinion for the rest of the community who, for the most part, you'd never know was gay.

Actually I loved there 10 years ago. And it is a beautiful city and I love Michael Tilson Thomas. For that alone I would go back. Loved the Asian food, the architecture, and lots of stuff. My point is that "liberal" and "open-minded" are two different things. There exists a mentality (among certain people, mind you) that I find shocking. People talked openly that America deserved 9/11. People (especially the straight ones) believe that being gay is synonymous with cruising McLaren Park and naughty bookstores, and frequenting bath houses. By validating the worst aspects of the gay scene, they do the gay community a grave disservice.

I don't agree with the comment about SF not being friendly towards the gay community. I was born raised and am still living in the SF Bay Area. I have gone to the city quite often. Have you ever been to Castro Street? Very Gay friendly. Being a native of the Bay Area I can say most of the people I have grown up with and have worked with are tolerant and accepting of the gay community. I have had friends who are gay. I was raised to not judge others, and to be accepting of everyone. I know most of the people I know feel the same way. I feel it's not someones right to tell someone else how they should be living their life. How does two people of the same gender getting married hurt or effect me? I don't get why people just are so closed minded. God would not Judge, and God loves everyone, at least what I have learned from the bible and religion. All you religous fundamentalists are a bunch of judgemental and angry people, I would not want to be part of your church. Remember God will be judging you in the end as well. Self righteous Christians are so annoying. There are some Christians who are not so ignorant, judgemental and angry.

I've lived in Ann Arbor, but lived in Grand Rapids for most of my life. While Ann Arbor is about the most liberal city in Michigan, I have no clue how or why Grand Rapids made the top 10. Western Michigan in general is historically conservative and if there is a large lgbt community here, they sure as h e l l hide it well. The magazine that posted the article is completely full of crap and people shouldn't simply believe what they wrote because it's not true. Admittedly I was quite a bigot when I was younger, but now that I am married and have children, I have learned to be accepting of other lifestyle choices. It doesn't mean that I like or agree with it, but as long as they aren't pushing their agenda, then I say to each their own. I guess we will all find out when we die whether the choices we made in life were the right ones or not.

I'm gay, and I don't expect you to love me. I do want EQUALITY, and not be beat-up, killed, over looked for employment.
Hate me if you must, but keep out of my life!

Well, I guess you've never heard of the Ann Arbor 'Feltch Fest'. Sure you have. You probably participated.

'Feltch Fest', almost fell out of my seat on that one! First time in 20 years I've heard the term Feltch. Nasty.

Thanks for the article. Really good to know what cities to stay away from.

I imagine this written in just the same manner as a white-hooded, bedsheet-wearing person thanking an article about the cities with a high percentage of blacks for telling him where not to visit. Good of you people to show your true nature.
