Opinion: For Michelle Obama, what's wrong with strong?

(CNN) -
How would you feel living in a museum?

It’s a thought that popped into my head the night I dined with a civic group at the White House, after which, to our delight and surprise, the president took us on a tour of the family’s private quarters. The first lady wasn’t present. She was strong-willed; criticized by the press for inserting herself in policy decisions. After I’d walked up the stairs and had a few historical curios pointed out to me, I realized that the rooms were grand, but the space was far less private than the single family homes many parents and children live in. As I imagined what it must be like to live there, my reaction was less “how cool,” more “how weird.”

Those were the Clinton years, not the Obama years. But now, a new book called "The Obamas" is resurfacing the themes of a family’s private life squeezed into a public space - and a strong woman taken to task for stepping out of her perceived role. The White House has reacted to the book by New York Times’ correspondent Jodi Kantor in a way that’s somewhere between meticulous fact-checking and obsession. First, White House spokesman Eric Schultz said Kantor hadn’t spoken to the Obamas since 2009 and that the book wove the couple’s inner-life out of “the author’s own thoughts.” Then, the first lady herself gave a rare interview, speaking to her friend Gayle King at CBS.

The first lady acknowledged she hasn’t and won’t read the book, but said based on descriptions of the work it conveyed “....an image that people have tried to paint of me since Barack announced [his run for the presidency], that I’m some angry black woman.”

Angry

Black

Woman

That specific stereotype is the third rail that Michelle Obama has had to leap over again and again, sometimes doing so as deftly as when she double-dutched on the South Lawn. Other times, there’s no mistaking the hostility pointed her way, as when she was booed at a NASCAR rally. Google the phrase “angry black woman” and you will get 1.28 million results - the top ones about Michelle Obama. The stereotype dates back to antebellum days, winding its way historically past Sapphire on "Amos 'n' Andy" and up to Tyler Perry in drag.

Michelle Obama has been scrutinized as a new vision of what a first lady should look like - often quite literally. (Witness last year’s controversy over Wisconsin's portly Republican congressman Jim Sensenbrenner criticizing the first lady for urging kids to exercise when she has, in his opinion, "a large posterior.")  But the issues the First Lady repeatedly faces racially are bigger than physical image. There was even the sense (described well in Kantor's book) that a black woman should not travel through Europe in designer clothes, although the means by which the Obamas gained their cultural and financial advantage was primarily through education; the sales of the president's book; and the hard legal work that Michelle Obama did to hold the family together during his early, peripatetic political career. The Obamas are, through dint of their hard work, living the American Dream. And while a white couple might be valorized for that, they seem to be penalized.

The perceived strength of the first lady has caused controversy during many administrations, as seen with the influence of Eleanor Roosevelt and even further back, Abigail Smith Adams, whose detractors called her “Mrs. President.” In her new book, Kantor asserts that Michelle Obama told an aide, “I don’t want to be Hillary Clinton.”  "The Obamas" also lavishes great detail on apparent tensions between the first lady’s team and the president’s, including a moment when former spokesperson Robert Gibbs, sparring with advisor Valerie Jarrett over a leak, unleashed a barrage of profanity and said of the first lady “Then f*** her too!” (That seems to be verified by an abashed Gibbs.) And the book notes that in a city where information is everything, the first lady has the ultimate backchannel.

“Following long presidential habit,” Kantor writes, President Obama “sometimes told her about top-secret matters: after the fact, when the information became public, she would sometimes admit to aides what she had known beforehand.”

Strong first ladies have had one set of challenges. The first African-American first lady of the United States faces another: the difference between being “strong” and being “angry.” It's not clear that Jodi Kantor sets out to make Michelle Obama seem angry as much as a Black Tiger Mother, intent on protecting cubs Malia and Sasha. (In fact, much of the book is devoted to how the Obamas work to parent their children with an eye to both their safety and growing autonomy, and how the fame of politics makes that difficult.) But is being angry always wrong?

In the television interview with Gayle King, the first lady says of the scrutiny of her household: “I guess it’s more interesting to imagine this conflicted situation here and a strong woman ...” The last part of that statement really piqued my interest. Yes, “The Obamas” includes speculation and re-creation, perhaps even a tainted imagination of what the first family’s life is like. But I worry that in coming out so hard against the book, Michelle Obama is, unwittingly, telling us that her strength is imagined.

Strength is not anger, but anger can be a catalyst for feats of strength. When I think of an a truly angry black woman, I think of Fannie Lou Hamer. A sharecropper, she was sterilized against her will during an unrelated operation. Her “Mississippi appendectomy” was one of the injustices that led her to join the civil rights movement and send a freedom delegation to the 1964 Democratic Convention. Was she angry? Hell, yeah. Was her cause just? Absolutely. She turned the stereotype of the angry black woman on its head.

Michelle Obama grew up in a working-class black family; saw her first roommate at Princeton move out because the student’s parents didn’t want their daughter sharing space with a black woman; became a lawyer; ran Public Allies Chicago; and of course, married the man who would be President and had two beautiful daughters with him. It’s worth reciting her history just to make it clear how strong she must be. If that fact makes some people angry... well, too bad for them. But if the first lady feels she has to hide her strength to survive Beltway politics, then, too bad for our culture, and too bad for us all.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Farai Chideya.

This is a great article – very well written! It's great to talk about what makes Michelle unique, and how she is still so unique today. She's not the first-strong willed First Lady and I'm sure she won't be the last!

Thank you Author for sharing – as a black woman – Mrs. Obama speaks as a humanbeing – with opinions and adamant views. As people their will always reflect that woman should know their place in this world. I refuse, as Mrs. Obama not to have a voice and live in this world a puppet.

The first Lady share the ideas and thoughts as a wife, a partner, a part of each others lives – they are one – just as any other first lady before them and to come.

First ladies are the force of encouragement and exercise their challenges without stepping boundaries of their Persidents, and some Presidents look to their First ladies for that support.

I applaud Mrs. Obama in her challenges, aspirations – an outstanding woman.

As far as the Obama's go, this is one time that I think race doesn't play a factor in her not getting along with many of her husband's staff... Remember Hillary Clinton?? LOL That woman is VERY STRONG and she was hated by almost EVERYONE. The issue is that people seem to want the Laura Bush's of the world - the stand behind your man types... Michelle and Hillary are not that... Thank Goodness!

lol, bs, both of them are standing behind their men, Hillary did when Bill was doing every woman that crossed his path, and this woman would be no different. The only thing is Michelle uses the race card, where Hillary couldn't.

Michelle = angry/mean woman that grew up hating whites, wrote about it in her college thesis, as well as attended a racist church along side her husband for over 20yrs.

It amazes me the hatred that is shown towards Mrs Obama and the statements about Black women in general here. While many of you have conveinced yourselves that all black women are laying on their backs and making babies for the welfare rolls, many are going to college, joining the milatary and making careers for themselves. We r not looking for someone to take care of us. We don't whine to our husbands and boyfriends daily about stupid things and we know there is no such thing as Price Charming galloping in to save us. We save ourselves. The funnier thing is that so many of you caucasian men and others desire the strong black independent womanfor just that reason.

This land was created by the Lord and belongs to Him.. If you don't like the occupants, you leave and take your white family with you I know your white wife and daughters don't want to go because it appears that they love black men.. African-Americans are here to stay. Maybe if you take control of your white daughters, you can have a lily white race because their desire for black men have made your race less white with mixed-race kids.. Get over it and forget about White Power. Can't we just all get along? God made man in the image of Him. When you see Him, He will look like you. When I see Him, He will look like me. Be blessed.

You therefore have nothing in your being that blacks want or need. You may not understand this because of your condition but Education has taken hold in the black communities and we are on the move and you know you can't stop an educated black man or woman. "The Obamas are, through dint of their hard work, living the American Dream. And while a white couple might be valorized for that, they seem to be penalized." - Right, because Romney and family, or to appease the Liberals who will dismiss anything about Republicans, Kerry and wife, are obviously praised for living the "American Dream" because they are rich "white" political couples who write books and have legal backgrounds.

"Google the phrase “angry black woman” and you will get 1.28 million results – the top ones about Michelle Obama." - Google the phrase "angry white men" and you will get 10.3 million results – the top ones about Republicans and Ron Paul. Two can play at the meaningless Google game. The stereotype of angry white men dates back to antebellum days as well, meaning that angry white men have been stereotyped for a long time, great.

The alleged, negative at first, stereotype is used to show that a black first lady is uniquely discriminated against a black first lady, yet the article then cites a list of other (white) first ladies who were similarly discriminated against in the same way. The stereotype of the "angry black woman" is used as proof of a negative racial attack by white bigots against the first lady, yet later it is touted as a strong characteristic that was turned into a positive stereotype by Hamer in 1964 when she turned the image on its head. Too boot, when Hillary Clinton was in the spot light they ridiculed her as part of a group of "angry white women" – a stereotype that has been around since pre-civil war days, and yadda, yadda, too.

Let's not always look at everything through the bitter and self-serving politics of race that divide issues falsely into categories of black this and white that. Mrs. The article itself argues itself into a corner of logical inconsistency. Obama is simply a black woman in the spotlight. The accuser simply thinks that Obama is an angry woman, the quality of being black simply being attacked by virtue of Mrs. Obama's race. Most of us do not care that some random person called Mrs. Obama angry, a term I would not have associated with her until today, but many, many more people will now have been affected by this slanted article that has illogically created a racial issue out of it.

Enough. Arrogance and ignorance no longer belongs in a political discourse, and only we, as a people, can expect that by acting like adults ourselves and showing the media and the politicians how to behave.

The problem in the black community is that women misinterpret being disrespectful, being uncivilized, being loud and being angry as being strong. This is no stereotype – it is the truth.

Michelle is not an angel. This is a woman who decided to go about telling people that candidate Obama smells in bed, doesnt flash the toilet, his shoes smell, etc etc. Where on earth have you heard of a person saying those nasty things about a spouse who is running for smoke...

I didn't agree with President Bush, didn't vote for him either time but I did respect the fact that he was the President of the United States of America. People want to say First Lady Obama is anti-American but do not see that by disrespecting the Highest Office in America, they are the ones truly unpatriotic!

Michele Obama is a strong woman. She is very supportative of her husband, President Obama and sets a very good example working together. This is hard to see with the other leaders in the White House who have said they will not support the President. These are not the type of leaders I want that cut each other down and state that they will disagree with most of the proposals Mr. President present. If we allow anyone to make racial remarks or hateful comments are not the kind of people I want representing me. President Obama have addressed many issues and I believe he has the knowledge to carry without hurting the American people.

Give me a break! Michelle is not strong. She is angry and has a deep hatred for America. Listen to her own words, watch what she does. Look at her facial expressions and body language. You can't hide it. Don't believe me? Read her dissertation. What Michelle is is a nobody. She wouldn't even be given the time of day if not for her husband (who also shares her deep-seated hatred and anger against this nation).

Great article and is written very well. I'm a Canadian and find US politics very interesting and don't see why people are giving the Obamas a hard time. The fact of the matter that it was a Republican George Bush elected twice by the American public, got involved in two wars, spent the surplus from the Clinton years and is directly responsibly for the current global strife and job loss across the world. President Obama has been doing his best to fix the wrongs that George started. Barack is an excellent leader and most Americans cannot see what he is trying to do to make America great again because the Republicans are so good atmoving the blame from bush to him. Republicans needs to learn to compromise and so do some Democrats to get the ball rolling for the average joe. America is in for a rough couple of years and so is the rest of the world. Best solution is that if the Dem's and Repub's cannot work together they need to resign so other's can get the job done.

actually i do follow it very well thanks. I was just pointing out that the blame is not just with Obama and the media is quick to point out the bad with him. Personal attacks about his wife via a book is very silly. The political fat cats in Washington just want to keep their privileges intact at the expense of regular Americans and will do anything to make Obama look like he cannot do the job. How many times has congress refused to.pass bills that are in the best interest of Americans. This goes for both the Dem's and Repub's

Before the Obama team put professional handlers around her in the summer of 2008, Michelle Obama was rough around the edges making dumb and angry comments. I suspect that is the real lady, "proud of her country for the first time" era Michelle Obama is the real lady and not this smiling fake lady we see on TV. Then in Madison, she said, "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of my country, and not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change." Once again we have a tell-all book written without any first-hand knowledge. It seems as if every presidency has one or more of these books. Ms. Kantor's book will sell and she will profit from it. Yes she works for the New York Times but that does not give her the knowledge she needed to write this book. However, unless she was there or she has first hand knowledge of anything I would not buy or read her book. There has been enough written already and much of it has been negative. Michelle Obama is a strong woman and she has succeeded because she is a brilliant woman and because she works hard.

Somehow people who work in the White House are loath to remember they are there to work for the First Family. Years ago, those people who worked in the White House would not be so eager to talk about their jobs.

Why do her looks even come into ANY conversation? It just proves either how shallow you really are, or the fact that you can't criticize anything else but want to have justification for your bigotry.

I suppose the Republican ideal of a First Lady is Laura Bush. By all accounts an intelligent, gracious and compassionate person. But she was also kept at arms length from anything having to do with her husbands job or his cronies. Then again, their hero Ronald Regan had Nancy and she was involved in all kinds of things. As always it depends on which political party the current president is in.

The issue here does have race as a motive, however strong women struggle in all areas of American life. Women who speak up and expect to be heard are *itches. We try to raise our daughters in a strong role, yet I do not know of any religion in this country that provides women with equal respect and leadership. Not one including my own. I had to leave my church so my girl would not be impacted by that negativity.
At a job interview once, I know the salary offered to me as a professional was below market, and I know that this was because I was female. I also knew they not only wanted me, but needed me. I said, "look at my resume, my experience and what I have to offer, think of a man and call me with a better offer." Call back was for $5.000.00 more.
I believe we need strong women in all aspects of life. If people have a problem with it, consider your childhood had your mother been weak and needy. Really? Do you want to go there? Go Michele, you are awesome and I would vote for you in a heartbeat!! kg

My only complaint about the First Lady is that we don't see and hear enough of her in public settings. Maybe that's on the media, but as the nations' first African American First Lady, she's a powerful symbol, like it or not. I'd also like to hear her more openly remind people about her story and that of her husband–they've earned all they have by hard work, persistence and diligence, and that's an All American story that more people (especially young ones) need to hear more often.

Yes the first lady is a well educated woman who went through a lot growing up, just as any other woman of color her age has. and we all should be proud of what she has accomplished. that said, our country is in a depression whether people want to believe this or not. I know this is probably not what people want to hear. if I were the first lady there is no way in hell i would throw my wealth in the face of my fellow Americans who me and my husband are working for. I would not go on gaudy vacations on the tax payers dime ever few weeks there is no way I would allow my husband to go golfing as much as the President has been doing. more than any other president combined in history. that is uncalled for and a disgrace and makes all of us look bad not just blacks but every American look horrible. he needs to read a book or go sit in a park to relax not go golfing/vacationing as much as he has been doing and the wife Does have a say in it and she should put a stop to it. but she has not. I dont mind how she dresses a first lady should look her best period but the vacations need to stop or go someplace cheaper and less often for Crying out loud. they need to practice what they preach and look at the Americans in the USA and see what we as a nation are going through and stop being so insensitive.

I disagree. She is a mother and the memories she builds with her family now are for the life of those children. The President and household is under constant pressure and they NEED vacations. Also, going to the Gulf coast to build up tourism, going to Hawaii, his home, how is that expensive? My family has neglected vacations, like most Americans, but we are not constantly under the media microscope.

you can go on vacations with your family but you do not need to go to spain and hawaii to enjoy yourselves.. you think she is doing it for the girls?? seriously? I can think of places here in the united states like disney world and the grand canyon as better options and cheaper options. and no they do not have to go on expensive elaborate vacations to relax there are less expensive ways to do it. people all over the united states ate dealing with losing their homes, children with cancer, dying parents and they cant afford to go to Spain and spend millions just to go on vacation and the tax payers should not be flipping the bill on that either.

There are a lot of stereotypes I've been made aware of since the election by racist fools. But please don't go on believing that all white people are thinking these things secretly. How was the comment racist???? He commented on his opinion of her gender, weight and attractiveness. Ethnicity was not mentioned or implied in any way.
HERE we have a perfect example of a LARGE part of the problem in this country. Criticism of a person of color – even if completely unrelated to ethnicity – draws the robotic, standard, automatic race label. And the person accusing someone of being a racist almost always thinks that they are doing a good deed.
Race relations have serious problems from BOTH sides of the table. There are just as many racists among whites as there are among blacks. Don't tell me – is that racist? Comments playing the 'race card' are just as common as comments based on ethnicity.
Here's the kicker: if you assume negative things about someone because of their ethnicity, you are a racist. So when you assume that a benign criticism of someone of color is automatically racist...YOU are the racist.

First, when asked 'what you would change about your partner, Barack Obama, said, I wouldn't change a thing. Michelle O'bama's answer was 'My list is too long to discuss'. Secondly, when asked what you would change in yourself, Barack O'bama said he regretted not learning a musical instrument, and wished he had mastered a second language. Mrs O'bama said 'I am always trying to work on patience' Eek... how long have you been working on that? any progress yet? Finally, sehe revealed that she places herself first. She said (her words not mine) that she needs her girlfriend time, here workout time and she feels that before she can give to others, she needs to take care of herself first. Any person who does not put their own health first is totally wrong. Only someone who is healthy can help other people. The First Lady understands that her being strong and healthy is absolutely necessary for her to be able to help others. I see people who refuses to take responsibility for their own health. I know of a man whose wife was ill but he would not take care of himself. I cannot understand how being unhealthy benefits his wife in any way.

She's also been the only first lady in recent history to have been disrespected by those on the right and through it all, she has handled herself with the dignity and class I saw in her from the beginning. We, black women have lived with that perception. "Angry Black Woman" all our lives for being strong, proud, intelligent, smart and classy. What's the difference? Regardless of how well an African-American carries about herself or himself, the white media and some white people and people of other races in America would still have their own prejudices and personal reservations of them. You drop out of school, get pregnant at an early age, do drugs, break the law or such and the white society throws all kinds of stereotypes at you and calls you shiftless, loser, lazy, bum, worthless, criminal and so on along with the N-word. But stay in school and get an education and play by the rules and try to be a success or a model citizen Like First Lady Michelle Obama or like President Obama and just see how the rest of America tries to tear you down. As they say, damn if you do and damn if you don't.

And yes, I believe that phrase "Strong Black Woman" fits Mrs. Obama to a T because she is exactly that... a strong, courageous and empowering and inspiring Black Woman. But sadly to say, underneat this well accomplished frame of an American First Lady is still that little Black girl who received a shock of her young life when she experienced racial discrimination for the first time as a young college student at Princeton University in 1981. This when the mother of her white southern roommate blew a fuse and threatened to take her daughter out of the University because the University "wrongly" roomed her with this African-American girl. I could just imagine the pain and the hurt young Michelle went through all of her young adult life, just thinking that perhaps bigorty and racism was something of the past and no longer prevalent in the 1980's only to get the shock of her life. This story hurts me every time I think about how devastating young Michelle fmay have elt and the trauma she had to deal with all these years. And it is as though her ancestors didn't enslave for four hundred years helping to build this country from the ground up or hadn't face enough oppression under decades of Jim Crow laws.

So fast forward to 2008 and here is a well accomplished African-American woman and devoted mother and wife of a US Senator who is running for President of the United States. But then all of a sudden, the white mainstream media kept reporting that in order for her husband and Senator Barack Obama to have a shot at the Presidency, she has to connect with the American people, tell them that she is not anti-American and an angry black woman and most of all, she must give the speech of her life at the Democratic National Convention. And just imagime, Barbara and Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton and all the other First Ladies never did have to give any speeches at their husband's convention at all, let alone the speech of their lives for their respective husbands to have a shot at the Presidency. So why the double standard? But you know what? Ms. Obama gave the best National Convention speech, better than any previous speeches of any of the former First Ladyies in US history. Darn, that sure defines what it is to be" A Strong Black Woman."

I will never forget the speech she gave when she said that the first time she has been proud of this country was when her husband was given the democratic nomination for president. I am OK with the dude sharing infromation with his wife and even her sharing her counsel with him within their own environs. I do not share the opinion that she has a duty, right or position to intervene in the development of policy within the whitehouse.

If Mr. President feels that she is of value in that type of role she should be appointed to the cabinet in the role in which she is to participate. Otherwise stfu.

ARE YOU SERIOUS? Most likely every first lady since the beginning of time has given her husband advice and most likely practically ran the White House. Eventually a woman will be president, but until then as first ladies become more and more educated the more input they will have. Good case in point is Nancy Reagan, we now know Ronald Reagan was getting Alzheimer's at the end of his presidency. All that whispering in his ear was her directing and reminding him of things he had forgotten.

Ok ... but don't turn around and tell people their perception is unfair. This is the woman who told the American people "this is the first time I am pround of America". If she didn't like that image ... she should have been more careful. Strong women can be careful and genuine without being abrasive.

Of course not because GE didn't hire her to run the company. And get over the racial nonsense. She is being criticized because she chooses to be in the public eye. If she stayed invisible, there would be no discussion of her. But, she has to push some absurd agenda about diet (and she is a fat mess) and make her opinions on other issues known so she is opening herself up to criticism. It has nothing to do with skin color.
