Opinion: What does Blackness look like?

Editor's note: Yaba Blay, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of Africana studies who teaches courses at Lafayette College. Her research focuses on black identity, with specific attention to skin color and hair politics. She is the recipient of a 2010 Leeway Foundation Art and Change Grant through which she embarked upon the book project, (1)ne Drop: Conversations on Skin Color, Race, and Identity.

This is part of a three-part series. Read Don Lemon's column, "It only takes one drop."

By Yaba Blay, Special to CNN

I always thought I could spot a Black person anywhere. My eyes were trained in New Orleans – home to a historically preeminent group of folks who self-identify as “Creoles.”   Many of them would make it a point to announce that they are different—not White, not Black, but “Creole.”  A mix of African, Native American, French, and sometimes Spanish heritage, some Creoles are light-skinned enough to be mistaken for— or “pass”—for White people. We call them “passé blanc.”

One of my favorite pastimes as a youth in New Orleans was “picking out Black people” – people whom everyone else might have thought were White or “something else,” but whom I knew for a fact were Black. Somehow. Without even knowing it at the time, I had blindly accepted the “one-drop rule,” the early 1900’s law turned social rule that held that anyone with 1/32 of “African Black blood” was Black. And somehow I made it my mission to identify that “one-drop” any chance I could get. Maybe it was my way of retaliating against those who didn’t want to be associated with my kind – those whom I felt were somehow rejecting their own kind.

In my limited experiences, it seemed that people whose physical appearance gave them the “option” to be something else, chose to be something else.  So in my adult life, when I left New Orleans and began to meet people who were very adamant about their black identity, even though they could have easily identified as “mixed” or “Latino” or “Creole” or could have even “passed” for white, I found myself intrigued. On one particular occasion, I was on a panel hosted by the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI); and for as “learned” and as well-versed as (I thought) I was in global skin color politics, I found myself somehow taken aback each time either of my co-panelists, whom I would have identified as “Latino/a,” self-identified as “Black” and “African.”  In that moment, I felt ashamed of myself for questioning their identities based upon the stereotypical visions of "Blackness" that lived in my head. Afterwards, as I continued to struggle with myself, I knew that I wanted to do something with my feelings that could be useful to others like myself. I wanted to explore the “other” sides of Blackness.

So began my journey into the (1)ne Drop project.

Starting with my own personal contacts and snowballing into a pool of over 40 contributors representing 20 countries, I interviewed people who self-identify as “Black” (or some version of it) but don’t necessarily look Black, like my collaborator, photographer Noelle Théard, who identifies as Black but is often assumed to be Latina. I asked them a variety of questions, like:

How do you identify? Racially? Culturally?
What makes a person Black? What makes you Black?
Upon first meeting you, what do people usually assume about your identity?
Do people question your Blackness?

All questions I myself have never had to think about, much less articulate answers to.

Most everyone that I spoke with had had the experience of having complete strangers casually ask them, “What are you?”  Another question I have never been asked. Although I had lived most of my life acutely aware of what I felt were disadvantages assigned to my dark skin–especially growing up in New Orleans–it wasn’t until I began having these conversations that I came to realize some of the privileges my dark skin carries; the most profound of which is its ability to clearly communicate my racial identity, not only to other people, but to other black people.

I can rest assured that when someone in the room is talking about Black people, they realize that they are talking about my people. I also know that if I say “we” when talking about Black people, no one looks at me like I’m crazy, no one laughs at me as if I am somehow confused about my identity, and no one takes offense because they suspect I am somehow perpetrating a fraud, which is what often happens when many of the people I interviewed claim their “Blackness.” Whether they are from the U.S., the U.K., Cuba or South Africa, all have had the experience of having their identity called into question simply because they don’t neatly fit into the “Black” box. Yet and still, they are clear about their identity as Black people: racially, culturally, and/or politically.

Combining candid memoirs with vivid portraiture, (1)ne Drop provides living testimony to the fluidity of “Blackness.” Through their personal narratives, contributors provide insight into their own imaginings of Black identity and their experiences as Black people. According to the old “one-drop rule,” Blackness is a matter of biology and the law, effectively leaving its subjects without voice (or choice for that matter), but it is through the personal narratives of our contributors that we come to see multiple possibilities for "Blackness" - ones that go above and beyond that old narrow and restrictive box.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Yaba Blay.

Skin color doesn't reflect the content of one's character. I couldn't care less about someones skin color. I'm waaaaay more concerned about how that person acts. Ive met white people who are horrible human beings and I have met black people who would give you the shirt off your back. And vice versa. I have yet to meet a nice asian. Just kidding 🙂 Point is, that every race is going to have good people, bad people, etc. Skin color DOESNT MATTER.

I am a genealogist by trade. I know my own family lines very well and am a mutt. I have every race in me save for Asian and Pacific Islander. I identify as white as most of my lineage is European. I look very much like my German Grandmother but have the American Indian bone structure in my face. The one Black ancestor I have found was from Mississippi in the 1860s, the son of a slave.

It is so sad to read racism comments. It seems like some people on blogs show their true colors. Why would anyone of any race belittle someone of another race? We are all human beings. What God do you worship that would think that this is ok? Remember all of you people with the racism comments, usually when you feel the need to belittle others it is usually to make yourself feel better. No race is more superior than the other.

I'm responding to comments, not the article: If you are in a majority, whether racial or religious or whatever, then obviously you'll say things like "is this even still an issue?" because it's not really affecting your day to day. I'm a middle class white guy, and race never really crosses my mind. But I have enough sense to realize that if a disproportionate number of my class, ethnicity, whatever was relegated to live in a ghetto, and my parents worked all the damn time to get by, or couldn't find jobs and resorted to crime (see: cause and effect), and I went to a crap school w/ no guidance of how to be successful, then I'm probably going to band together with that group and make it an issue until things change. That's just human nature. There are lots of people that say "pull yourself up by your own boot straps," well what if you can't afford boot straps? Every successful person was given an opportunity, not even guys like bill gates and steve jobs did it on their own. Do those ghettos have high crime rates, drug use, etc., absolutely, I'm not arguing statistical facts, i'm saying it has nothing to do with race, and everything to do with the environment that they are in. But it's out of sight out of mind for guys like me who grew up in the country with 1 minority in town ("why are you so tan?!", I might not be volunteering in the ghettos (iraq/afghanistan instead), but i'd be more than happy to pay more in taxes if I knew it was cleaning those places up. You'd find a lot less articles like this online if that were the case.

I need to jump in. Just had this conversation this morning, I am considered "White". My mother was Italian, my Dad was 1/2 German 1/2 French. I always proudly say that makes me a mutt. When I was young and growing up in a very white neighborhood, I was an out cast – somthing I learned later was because of my olive complection – and called a Dago Wap! My mother taught me to act like it did not bother me and they will leave you alone. My mother was very wise. Later in life I had a Black fella offer to take my life cause I was white. Yet some other Blacks surrounded me and protected me. That was cool!–So why do you all do that? I mean be so mean to others that don't share your color. None of you had a choice in it, yet ALL of you do it! Oh yes I see color of people, and often see the difference in their back ground because of it, but I find that I don't treat people different because of it. But I have been treated different because of it.........Oh why do I waste my time here writting this? Everyone we have enough crap in life to deal with, IMAGINE if we could stop this maddness of racial intolerance. Someone said earlier that God sees us all the same. He does. That is the God of the bible. Hmmm Does anyone out there really want to change?

You're right, African Americans do make a bunch less than most Americans (read: non African Americans). On the other hand, another black race in America, AFRICANS (read: immigrants from Africa who came to America to study, work, live or all three) make a whole lot more than African AMericans and the average American of any race. How do I know? I'm one of them....and my circle of friends, relatives, associates (personal and professional) attest to this fact. REASON: In Africa, that most misunderstood, neglected and maligned continmet of all most of us live like "the elite caucasian's around here". Two parent families, education is the focus of children and parents alike, good manners are taught and enforced....oh, and we actually have a social life. No shift work or needing to hold 2 or more jobs to make finances work. And AMERICAN'S have the NERVE to think themselves superior to others just because they happen to live in AMerica? This country is dying a slow and painful death and it will NEVER – read my words, NEVER, regain its past glory. Watch out America. Here comes AFRICA – the super power of the 22nd century. Blacks are less than Americans and earn less???? Well when your poor trashy, disease ridden ancestors came to this country, Blacks were already here! People don't stop to realize that Black Americans have been in this country longer than those that say, I'm 3rd generation, or whatever generation. The average Black person can't count back the generations that they have been in this country. So when you look at it, most Black Americans were already here when the majority came through Ellis Island.

I guess the trolls on here who are badmouthing blacks are too ignorant or too uneducated to know that their own ancestors originated in Africa i.e. they would have been black too. Got to love irony sometimes.

Interesting article btw as was the related website.

I've known people from the Seychelles who at first glance were white, blonde and blue eyed but it was also apparent that they had some black blood perhaps from great-grandparents. Places like that are fascinating because the people seem to get along well regardless of their outward appearance.

I can relate to those who look atypical for their ethnicity because people have always had a hard time placing mine.

I'm not sure if your post was directed at me so just to clarify, I'm not black, I'm of Asian descent. Fact is though, there are many stunning black women in the US, Africa, the Caribbean, and Brazil to name a few places but this may not be apparent to those who are insular and/or ignorant and the media doesn't seem to go out of its way to highlight it either.

Another fact is that attractive black women hold on to their looks much longer than any other race, something that doesn't get acknowledged much publicly but is strikingly obvious. It's amazing when you see a black actress/model even 10-15 years later and they have no wrinkles, no sagging etc. Also no desperation about getting cosmetic enhancements which is refreshing.

About your other post that "Asian women are gorgeous", some are, some aren't – actually, it's off-putting the way some whites play minorities off each other.

I could write a lot more but the bottom line is that people with your mentality represent the dregs of society regardless of your color.

      @Twang

    • WRONG MELODY

You seem confused Melody. Let me try to break this down for you.

Say a chinese man and woman have a child, the child is what.. chinese. Say that chinese child has a baby with a nigerian, the child is what.. half chinese, half nigerian. Say that half chinese, half nigerian child has a baby with a full nigerian.. the child is now 75% nigerian, 25% chinese. Then THAT kid has a child with a full nigerian. That kid is now FULL NIGERIAN. Say that continues a few more times.
WHO THE FRACK would say that 5th generation nigerian is CHINESE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was washed out!
A true mixed person is someone who's parents or grandparents are different races. But if you go 4, 5, 20 generations down.. they are no longer THAT!

It is simple logic. Marinate on that a bit. I think you need some time to clear the cobwebs out of your brain to understand.

  23. Culture v/s color

I'm white and proud of my people and culture. That is not to say that I disapprove of other races and cultures. I have lived all over the world and generally appreciate other people and cultures for what they are. However, I think it is fair and honest for me to say that I do not enjoy all cultures nor am I required to like all cultures. It is normal for people of the same culture to gather for social activities because they are comfortable sharing common activities, foods, philosophies, etc. African Americans have developed and embraced a multifaceted culture of their own. There are aspects of that culture (ebonics, dreadlocks, white baiting) that I do not enjoy so I choose not to associate with individuals who choose to display those cultural interests. It is a matter of my cultural preference. It is not the color of skin that I find offensive. African Americans who do choose to speak proper English are sometimes criticized by other African Americans as being "too white." That is their prejudice. On occasion, when listening to the TV news or weather, I have turned to see an African American speaking when I had expected to see a Caucasian. I am drawn to that person in a very positive manner because that person is displaying "cultural choices" that I enjoy and appreciate. I am not asking any African American to change their cultural persuasions to suit my interests in any way. I am only saying that it is the cultural differences that divide us.... not the color of our skin.

Besides, what the freak is a 'light skinned african american'? That makes no sense. Do you see light skinned AFRICANS In AFRICA? No, you don't. Interesting, but missing the bigger point.

The One Drop rule is essentially true! Everyone on the planet is genetically African, with the exception being Europeans who have a high percentage of Neanderthal DNA. Most are simply White Africans, but you can tell the ones with high Neanderthal DNA, because they simply think differently than everyone else.

So when you mis a European with an African, you get back an African. However, there are two dangers of having too much European DNA.

First, is that you will increase the possibility of your children having high Neanderthal DNA content, and

Secondly, and most important, you start losing the one thing Africans have for evolution... HIGH genetic diversity. Without Genetic Diversity, you have no ability to create humans different from yourself(i.e. evolve). Europeans, are a dead end branch of humanity because their genetics are going nowhere, they can't produce anything except themselves.

BTW, take a trip down the historical record. Civilization is built upon a foundation of science, religion, mathematics, govermental systems, medicine, etc. Here's the test!

Can you name ONE foundation of civilization any European has EVER created? There isn't any, they've come up with exactly NOTHING, and copied everything from Africans.

Even modern technology is almost all African. Europeans have done well on infrastructure and killing, but that's it.

You need to look in the mirror before calling people out for being racist. Racism can be applied towards white people too, not just the other way. A lot of people on this thread claim that white will never understand what it means to be black, and while that is true. Blacks will never understand what it means to be white, and being treated like your racist all the time, though it has never been in your mind that any one person was above another simply because of the color of their skin.
But actions like these, Marcia, do not help to fix the race barrier, that is for certain.

I have come to realise that the human race is generally weak, irrespective of biological or political annotations, and that while the few truly knowledgeable ones strive to bring out the best in themselves to the gain of all, foolish ones like 'John doe', strive very hard to conjure an absent superiority by putting others down.. one thing I must thank you for though, is your eternal anonymity......really pathetic!

I was tickled to hear that the author is from New Orleans and fairly proud of her ability to notice ethnic subtleties . I also grew up in New Orleans in a creole family and am myself part Hispanic. I find it very hard and kind of awkward to explain to my non-Southern friends the subtle distinctions of skin tone and what certain ones hint at. I was also, and to some degree still am, particularly interested in ethnicity and racial backgrounds. I suppose it is just the culture of the city, but we where all very concerned with being able to identify people and it was just something that the Black community focused on. We had a long history of discrimination even inside our own community and growing up it was not unusual to hear someone tell you that you could/couldn't pass the paper bag test (something that creoles used to segregate their own community events, if the underside of your wrist was darker than a brown paper bag, you were too dark). Fortunately, my family didn't care about color and we come in every shade from brown to white, so I never really focused on whether or not someone was Black or Mixed as a bad thing, just as a sort of interesting tidbit that they may or may not even be aware of.

I also grew up being constantly asked "what was I" and made to, I don't believe intentionally, feel out of place because I had "good" hair and looked different from most of my classmates. I spent a lot of time trying to fit in with the Black community as well as the Hispanic community and being frustrated that I was not always accepted by either. I heard a lot of "You can't say that because you're not really Black/Hispanic" or "We weren't talking about you because you're not Black/Hispanic."

As an adult, I no longer fully identify with anything because I feel that I would be shortchanging myself. My ethnicity goes beyond Black/Hispanic. My bloodline also includes French, several tribes of Native American, Irish and Jewish so now I simply see myself as human and I am so thrilled to see that more and more of my generation and the younger ones are less concerned with skin color and have no problem dating and loving across the spectrum.

Here's to becoming a better and fully inclusive HUMAN race.

CNN's John Lemmon did article of "One Drop Rule", which I had not heard for many years, but, long story short, in the 60s & 70s, whites would ensure that any drop of black blood in a person's heritage makes that person 100% black. It was meant to degrade any human that had a drop of black in the person.
His article brought back a memory from my childhood that used to factor, but, today, we are a different country and the 1 drop rule is actually a very good thing leading into the next 50 years of the U.S. history.

Making sure that one is black is not something bad at all. In fact the white man would be doing that person a huge favor. I know a few white people and I am not racist at all but believe me I do not see anything so special about the white race that would make me want to be like them. I see some black people dying to be like them (changing hair color, skin bleaching ets). My advice to every black person in the world is to no one thing: NO MATTER HOW A WHITE MAN or WOMAN LIKES OR LOVES YOU HE OR SHE WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE THAT HE IS BETTER THAN YOU. That my friends will never change. When you live your life as a black man or woman with that mentality believe me they still will not like you but they will not disrespect you.

White people don't have to think about race, so they don't. I think that's why we're so surprised that black people are still on this topic. We don't see how excluded other races are until its pointed out. Black people however, almost never know how an average white person feels about race and our ignorance of the topic is disheartening. Unfortunately, almost the only ones who talk about race with blacks are racist. Great impression we whites make as a race. I do think its time to start having these conversations. It's the only way we can grow as a community.

Why on earth would someone spend their time trying to figure out if someone is part black. Who cares. Yes if someone is bi-racial they can claim both races. If someone is three or four of races they can claim multi. But again who cares. Even for those of us who can't pass, we have to deal with people trying to trace the other 'drops'. "Where are you from?" What about your mother? Your hair is a bit different. Stop looking for people who are passing, stop harassing other black people who you know have a multi-racial background. Some of us just want to enjoy life. Some of us black people need to drop all of our prejuidices as well. It starts in our own race.

Class warfare is not whites against the blacks. It's everyone noticing that the 1% are leveraging laws and regulations in their favor and ripping the rest of the country off. It's realizing that the 1% are literally borrowing money from the FED without our knowing. It's protesting the idea that our tax dollars are used to bailout companies so they can go on being bad companies. Real investors won't touch them. But our government will? Only the 1% call it class warfare and they do it to try and confuse the actual issue.

@ CHRIS, WHEN WHITE PEOPLE LANDED IN VIRGINIA IN APRIL 1607, WHO DID THEY FIND? DIDN'T THEY FIND NATIVE AMERICANS INDIANS? IF ALL NON-WHITES, NON CHRISTIANS SHOULD LEAVE USA, THEN WHITES SHOULD LEAVE AS WLL BECAUSE GOD GAVE THIS LAND TO NATIVE AMERICANS BEFORE WHITES ARRIVED IN 1607. AND BY THE WAY, JESUS CHRIST THE FOUNDER OF CHRISTIANITY WAS AN ISRAELI NOT A WHITE PERSON, SO I GUESS U NEED TO THINK WITH YOUR GOD GIVEN BRAINS, NOT YOUR ASS.

Doesn't seem like it is working to me, just fanning the flames. Clever or intelligent, maybe, but certainly not creative..... I have my doubts about the intelligence simply because you can cling so tightly to one stereotype. If we were to play that game (though several are and that is the real problem) then I should be able to believe with certainty (it is fact after all, right, just like your "Fact"?) that you must have very nappy and hair and be extremely loud. Also, you must be a big fan of fried chicken, watermelon, and grape soda. Also, a criminal.... see where this game gets us? Nowhere, we just keep following the same cycles of intolerance. "Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."

Wow, ya'll are being pretty tough on her. I am a caucasion, Southern woman. What she is writing about is historically sound. Throughout the 20th century there was a tendency for anyone who would legally be classified as "colored" to attempt to "pass". From what I understand, the reasons for doing so were to try and obain the benefits that were available to caucasians and denied to people of mixed or other races. To try and pass meant cutting ties with much of a person's family and connections. It was a terrible choice to have to make just to be treated like a human being. After watching many of the barriers to legal and social rights torn down within my 52 year lifetime, I've watched as generations of blacks have gone from being meek, subservient and stepped-upon, to defiant and angry to now starting to embrace who they are. There is nothing wrong with wanting to identify with a particular group. We all do it in one way or another.Wouldn't life be so much more boring if we were all exactly alike? I have so much curiousity about how lots of different ethnicities experience life. These days it seems to have become politically incorrect to even notice our skin color differences. I say hooray to Ms. Blay for continuing to explore her own experience of what it means to live within her own particular skin and to be curious enough to want to compare her experiences with others.

why do i have to accept biracials as blacks. Is the white man a god? Why do many blacks simply cower over and accept the one drop rule. I thought blacks said they were strong and free? Are you really strong and free. Or are you afraid, weak and intimidated inside. Sorry to burst your bubble but this president is biracial, former virginia governor Douglas Wilder is biracial, Jesse Jackson, Farrakhan, Booker T washington and many others are bi racial.

You obvious are ignorant of history especially in the South. Even if Blacks didn't "cower over" as you put it, the establishment saw them as Black and thus less than and that affected their lives tremendously – from the schools they attended, to the neighborhoods they could live, to the jobs they could hold. This is not some figment of Black imagination. And before people say oh so long ago what of it. Those people who suffered such humiliation are still living. My mother-in-law tells stories of growing up in Mississippi where the children in her school received all the old worn out books from the white school, and many times pages where torn out, and other daily indignities she and her family had to suffer. And it didn't matter if you had two or one Black parent. In MS, you were Black!

Ugh! Another "who are we" story from CNN and the black community. Give it up! Stop! It only leads to more resentment because invariably the stories are nothing but "woe to me" because I am black. It's not because you have a chip on your shoulder, around every corner is racism, (your the only ones that know racism), and then, vote for Obama because...he's black. Isn't that racism? You know who will call me the ugliest name, not a black, but a white liberal. Ugh!

There is so much wrong with your post and ultimately your thinking! Where to begin??
1). This is no "woe is me" article. It is simply about a woman doing research on the experiences of those born Black in America and abroad. If you are tired of these articles, don't click on them.
2). This argument that since Blacks voted for Obama in large numbers they must be racist is getting tiresome. Had Hillary been the Demoratic nominee, do you really think there would have been an even distribution of the vote between Democrat and Republican? Get real! So are all the white people who voted for McCain racist? And are all those white people who have criticized Obama from day one and want him out of office, racist? Come on!

Gee Phil, I'm not sure if I should be honored or upset with your comeuppance to my statement. Those who posted before me, and after me, seem to have posted more strident statements that make mine seem paltry by comparison. When it is estimated that 97% of a race voted or will for a person that has obviously failed domestically and internationally, without condeming any of his actions (yes, some blacks have made statements but they best watch their backs in their communities) can only lead to the statement, "why do you vote for Obama?" And if the answer is because he's "black" then blacks have failed. These articles (Phil this is only one in a series, give us break) only articulate that failure. Since you already have me in your crosshairs, I will boldly say that you are a white liberal with an expensive education (little contact with blacks, except on television) and now have a well paying job, feeling it's your DUTY to chastise others for what they believe. I would suggest that if you feel there are so many wrongs brought forth by the white community on blacks then you should go down to your local food bank and help those less fortunate than yourself. What do you think?

So, let me understand your logic

Ok, I kept up with you. So yes, I will continue to weep.

Regardless of minor biological differences between racial groups, there are cultural differences that can't be blithely waved off. I dated interracially extensively in my 20s and even married a person who was not of African-descent. In time, the marriage ended and all I felt was relief about no longer having to explain on a daily basis my hair, food preferences, etc. I have non-Black friends who are great people, but there is a gulf that can be painful and near impossible to cross. Being with other African Americans, I feel so relaxed. If I have conflict with a black person, I know race isn't a part of it and that is very freeing.

"explain on a daily basis my hair, food preferences, etc" I think the article is more about Mixed race folks and what race they identify with. If you are 1/16th black and 15/16th white then I think your food preferences will be as varied as anyone's. I personally don't care which color a mixed race person chooses to identify with.

Funny how White people don't have to be bothered with classifying how white they are or the different degrees of being White. Since they are all fair there are no insecurities as to the differing degress of their darkness to obsess over. Let the Brown races work themselves into a frazzle over that nonsense.

Quite a few white people talk about their 'whiteness'... except that its not generalized as 'blackness' is. People identify 'black' as a race... 'of African Descent'. Its not spelled out in any law how 'white' you have to be to pass as white... which is what makes it an issue. You can talk about how your grandparents came from Poland, Ireland, England or any other country and in that manner you are talking about your 'whiteness'. Its all in how its described that people decide to fuss about something.

I initially agreed with you as I was reading, then I thought, "its not actually funny", when you think of (quoted from you, classifying how white they are or the different degrees of being White) Reason being, many blacks were descendants of slaves that were interbred with caucasian persons during the slavery period and not long after. As a result, they tend to have varying degrees of "being white". That part is absolutely not funny. Further, during Reconstruction, post-Civil War, there were things called Black Codes, which forbid blacks from all types of activities that most people take for granted now, like things as simple as walking with a cane, a meeting of 2 or more blacks at one time, etc. At that time, very often, it was a unique ability to "pass" (for white) and thereby being able to enjoy certain freedoms like riding on a train or using a public restroom.
So, though I do see your point that much in the article can be considered frivolous; I can not agree that it is in any way funny as you said.

Gosh "penbooty", I hate to intrude on your smug delusions that whites don't differentiate over degrees of whiteness but that's not true. Some whites do.

Here are a couple of quick examples:

      – Some northern Italians who tend to be "fairer" and more often blonde and blue eyed do look down on their darker haired/skinned/eyed compatriots from the south, especially Sicily.

      – Some white Australians of British descent have been known to be prejudiced against Australians of Italian, Greek, and Croat descent even though they are all technically Caucasian. Eric Bana, the Australian actor even talked about the derogatory names he was called growing up.

And just for the record, I love being a member of a "brown race" as does every brown/black person I know. At a minimum, for me it means I get to be a very healthy light tan color year round. Naturally. There goes another delusion of yours.

It looks like 90% of our K12 teachers, the huge majority of our corporate executives and politicians, the majority of the history and authors that American students study, and the huge majority of folks who live in suburbia. We don't need a white history month, because we've had white history, year-round, for centuries, presented as the complete history of our county. Agree. America is still on a slavery guilt trip. Allowing the obviously racially biased organizations to continue to operate in this country is one way to "make amends".

I really don't see an end to racial though, not in any country. It's just human nature to be wary and protect ourselves and what we have from other tribes, whom we identify as not being one of our own because they look different than us. You see it all over the animal kingdom.

any guilt trip is really more about wanting to make sure they don't have to repay any stolen properties their ancestors may owe or find out their ancestors lynched someone and then stole their land/property. When the descendents learn the real history, it makes people think of real justice which would be repay things even if your ancestor did it, if you are still enjoying the benefits of that stolen property. morally they should give it back but greed prevents that.
