Trayvon's death: Echoes of Emmett Till?

By John Blake, CNN

(CNN) -  Both were African-American teenagers who left home and never came back. Both forced the nation to talk about unwritten racial codes. Both didn’t live to see what symbols they became.

Trayvon Martin and Emmett Till.

They died 57 years apart, but their names and legacies may be forever merged. Some are saying Martin, a 17-year-old black teenager who was shot to death by a white Hispanic neighborhood watchman is on the verge of becoming this generation’s Emmett Till.

Thousands of angry Americans – of various races - have taken to Facebook and news sites and the streets to compare Martin’s fate to Till, the 14-year-old black boy who was murdered in Mississippi in 1955 for allegedly violating an unwritten Southern racial code by whistling at a white women.

Washington Post writer Eugene Robinson invoked Till in Martin’s case to say black men still wear a “bull’s-eye” throughout their lives.

Though he stopped short of comparing Martin’s case to Till’s, calling such comparison “facile … a disservice to history and to the memory of both young men.”   But, he added, “it is ridiculous to imply that nothing has changed.”

Is the comparison fair?

Mark Naison, an African-American Studies and History professor at Fordham University in New York puts it this way: “Emmett Till broke the code of his time by speaking in a suggestive, teasing way to a white women - Martin by wearing a hoodie and walking at night through a white neighborhood. The reason for the second death is every bit as outrageous as the reason for the first.”

Martin died February 26, while walking to his father’s home. Police say he was shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida, who said he was acting in self-defense. Martin was unarmed, carrying a bag of Skittles candy and an iced tea, according to police.

A lawyer for George Zimmerman, the neighborhood volunteer, says his client is not a racist, is of mixed race himself, and had mentored two children of a black woman. Now, a month after Martin died, Zimmerman still has not been arrested.

Martin’s death has re-ignited debate over the public perception of black men.

“I don’t think anyone doubts that if the race of those two were reversed that the perpetrator would be arrested,” says Chris Johnson, one of the creators of “The Question Bridge,” an interactive exhibition that focused on black men, “the most opaque and feared demographic in America,” according to organizers.

The Question Bridge” exhibition toured the country this year, showing videos of black men posing and answering questions of black men from different generations. Johnson said it was designed to shed many of the labels attached to black men - such as "criminal" - by getting them to talk openly about them.

The questions were abstract, but Martin’s case made it more personal, Johnson says: It shows many black men are still feared and shackled by stereotypes, just as they were in Till’s time.

Even so, much has changed since the 1950s.

Till was visiting relatives in Money, Mississippi, when he allegedly flirted with a white woman in a store. He was abducted at night from his great uncle’s home, tortured and murdered. His body was dumped in a river.

Two white men were arrested, and indicted by a Grand Jury.

A relative of Till identified the two men in court as the men who kidnapped his nephew. The jury deliberated 67 minutes before acquitting the two, who were photographed grinning and laughing in court.

Till’s death drew people’s attention to a prejudiced and corrupt legal system in the Jim Crow South. Martin’s death is drawing people’s attention to the conduct of Florida police and the state's gun laws, says Randolph McLaughlin, a New York attorney and professor at Pace Law School in New York.

“Just as in Emmett Till’s case, nothing was done by local authorities,” he says. “It was fine to lynch a black kid then. It’s fine to kill a black kid now.”

Till’s mother took advantage of an emerging technology – television – to mobilize the nation on behalf of her son. She also insisted that photos of her son’s deformed corpse be made public.

Till’s mother’s decision to go to the media galvanized the nation, says David Aretha, author of “The Murder of Emmett Till.”

“When Emmett’s coffin arrived via train in Chicago, she touched the box and fell to the ground. As five men lifted the wrapped body out of the box, she wailed ‘Oh, God. Oh, God. My only boy,’” Aretha says.

Television cameras recorded the heartbreaking scene.

When Aretha heard about the death of Trayvon Martin, he says he thought about the similarities to Till’s death.

“The murders themselves were appalling, but what really angered the general public was the injustice - highly questionable laws and customs that allowed for whites to freely murder blacks in the Jim Crow South and for someone to almost randomly shoot anyone in the Martin case,” Aretha says.

Still, there are some significant differences between Till and Martin.

Till violated the racial codes of the South by his swagger and talking to a white woman, says James Peterson, an African-American studies professor at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.

Martin didn’t do anything, Peterson believes.

“Trayvon Martin was literally walking to his father’s house,” Peterson says. “This is racial profiling and vigilante justice gone wrong.”

Blacks had little political power in 1955 - couldn’t even vote in many parts of the South. Today, of course . The president of the United States is black, as well as the nation’s attorney general, Peterson notes.

At a news briefing, the president expressed sympathy for Martin’s family, and added a personal note:.

“If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon,” Obama said.

Till’s case had unexpected political consequences, Aretha says.

“The Till case, without question, fueled the emerging civil rights movement,” Aretha says. “… Someone asked Rosa Parks why she didn’t get up [from her bus seat] when she was threatened [with arrest for disobeying a law that required blacks to give up their seats to white people.] She said she thought about Emmett Till and couldn’t go back anymore. We will see if the murder of Trayvon Martin sparks another kind of social movement.”

This whole story has gotten out of hand. While it was a very tragic thing that happened, it's not a nation wide epidemic, it is a one off case of someone who was way too intense about his neighborhood watch duties. The majority of black people killed in this country are at the hands of other black people....there's an epidemic for you.

The article speculates that If the races had been reversed, the killer would definitely have been arrested. However, the black community would stand behind the black man. If they were both black (which is what 90% of black-involved killings are like), the black community would silently ignore the issue, and refuse to engage the press or the police. If they were both white (which is what 90% of white-involved killings are like), the black community would also silently ignore the issue. We see stark contrast between the extreme reaction of the black community when there's a racial divide vs the underlying concern for the murder and the lost potential of a young man.

    Emmett Till? Please.
I believe that Mr. ZImmerman probably never knew he had a racist bone in his body, that this is more endemic to our society – fear of young black men.
But why can't we say it like it is? Every time I have been a victim of crime, the perpetrator was a black man. In high school in Atlanta, black was okay and white was bad. The black kids could do whatever they wanted and just lie and say you called them the N-word, and the white kid got the punishment. Contrary to what people like to acknowledge, there is hate towards every race in our society, just some is accepted and culturally condoned.

Oh, come on! Emmett Till? Really? Enough already. This was a case of someone possibly being hyper-sensitive to the situation in his neighborhood who had a gun. He reacted first, thought later. It was a terrible, tragic, senseless mistake. This is no Emmett Till.

Yes, absolutely it has gone too far when people start evoking the names of murdered (tortured and murdered) black people in the 1950s American South. This was so tragic but it really feels far more like someone having a gun who NEVER should have had a gun–followed by sloppy police work and Florida's warped sense of shoot now and ask questions later. It doesn't lessen the tragedy if it turns out NOT to be a hate crime. Anyone who draws a direct comparison to Emmett Till needs seriously to read a book!

It would seem that CNN is so desperate for news they are trying to incite a race war so they can cover it 24/7. I don't understand the absurdity this is evolving into. I could never fathom what it's like to be a black man or woman in America in this day and age, but I refuse, as a caucasion of European descent, to feel guilty about this horrible murder of a young man. This was turned into a race thing by the media. Of course it would be nice to assume this young man was killed because he was a black kid wearing a hoodie but this Zimmerman guy is a wimp for shooting a kid who was beating him up. I am disgusted by CNN's desperate attempt to keep fueling the racist flames on this. It's deplorable how black people are allowed to act in the media by laying this yet again at the entire white race's feet. Enough is enough of this nonsense. Report facts. FACTS. I am tired of CNN reporter's opinions which only seem to fuel the hate even further. Don't you people realize what you are doing?

In reading the article ‘Trayvon’s death: Echoes of Emmett Till’, the author states Trayvon was killed by a White Hispanic? Really, since when is a Hispanic white. Why does a death between races always come back to the white vs. black? Writers need to be more conscience of what they write unless the intention all along was to cause more issues than what is at hand.

So sad to see such poor comments regarding a life lost due to being Black! It is no accident that Blacks make up 12% of the population but Black Males are imprisoned more than any other race in this country. It is no accident that most schools have a 20-40% graduation rate for Black males, it is no mistake that HIV infection rates of Blacks here in America mirror that of 3rd world countries, it is no mistake that regardless of the wealth this country has gained from 400 years of unpaid labor from enslaved Africans that Blacks do not own even 1% of this country's wealth. Check out the Schott Report or books like The new Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. There is a war going on....it is simply to exterminate Black Men. No one should ever be killed for the way they look or dress..... But of course, everyone on this site commenting really believes that Blacks have the same opportunities as Whites in AMERICA!!!!!

Well how about you check your facts. Black males do not commit 50% of murders. They are incarcerated at a disproportionate rate for crimes that whites and other races are JUST as likely to commit, such as drug possession, theft, drug use, rape and murder. But because they system has been built on a notion of Black criminality, people like you buy into the idea that Blacks are inherently more criminal than other races. Maybe the next time you decide to try to be an expert on the facts you should do your research first

Look at the racial make up of gangs. That'ts where most of the crimes are committed. And don't try the whole "white people should feel guilty over slavery" bull crap. Here's why:
      1) White aboltionists fought for the freedom of all slaves (civil protests)
      2) White people ran the underground railroads to free slaves
      3) Black African tribes sold other black Africans into slavery. Slavery is an African tradition
      4) The American government fought a war, in a large part, to end slavery.

As Carolyn Bryant would later tell the story in a Tallahatchie County courthouse, Till asked her for some candy inside a candy counter. When Bryant placed the candy on top of the counter, Till grabbed her right hand tightly and asked, "How about a date, baby?" When Bryant pulled her hand free and started to walk away, Till grabbed her by the waist near the cash register and told her, "You needn’t be afraid of me, baby I’ve [slept] with white women before.”. It was reported to family and friends that Emmett had said "I bet you got some good pu__y",also, but Bryant, being the lady she was, would not admit she had let a young black boy say that to her and not immediatly killed him herselfalthough, she had gone outside the store to retrieve a handgun, when Emmett made the infamous whistle.

Revisionist history says that he simply whistled at a white woman, but the facts that surrounded the case clearly show he did something far more disrespectful "I bet you got some good puzzy". Are you kidding me? This and Emmett Till. Not even close. The Emmett Till case was a clear cut case of racist behavior, in a racist state, prosecuted and jurored by racist, at a time when it was status quo in the deep south. To suggest these cases are related is ignorant at best. Both cases are and were a tragedy to be sure and both involve a black youth but there the comparison ends.

Zimmerman was presumably doing his job with neighborhood watch. He happened to see a kid that fell out of the "normal set". Yes he was black which made him stand out in an otherwise predominately white neighborhood. I being white would stand out just the same walking through Harlem. That hardley makes anyone viewing me as odd in their neghborhood a racist and if anyone questioned what I was doing there I would shake their hand for using common sense.

Is the killing of this youg man justified? I dont know. I wasnt there. But while doing my duty and armed, if I were physicaly attacked while trying to question someone on the turf I am trying to protect, my self instinct would probably be to protect myself by neutralizing the assailant. White, black, yellow would not be in the thought process. Not taking an ass whipping from a sixteen year old for doing my job would be high on my list. If zimmerman was attacked by this youth, he had every right to protect himself. Race be damned.

Well said. The vast majority of violence against Blacks is by Blacks. They dont speak out as a community against music that is racist, violent and abusive to women. According to the Justice Department, they are responsible for over half of the interracial violence even though they make up just 15% of the population. Its sad what has happened in this incident, but maybe its time for the Black community to quit looking to blame someone for the violence in their communities and to look inward.

I thnk you may be missing the point. Being a black man myself, i can understand your point on blacks killing blacks everyday, but this wasnt a gang related, poverty related shooting that normally takes place (please dont argue the exceptions). White people are on yooutube and other social networks just as much as blacks putting down the other races. In my hometown of Newark, NJ, ive seen/heard more killings that i would like to take credit for, but we are talking about an unarmed teen and a "watch" person that was not only trained to deal with instances like this, but was also directed from his "superiors" at the 911 dispatch to stop pursuing the kid. I wasnt there, only those two and God knows what happened; but when someone has the authority to "watch" a neighborhood, that right does not include the right to take a life. Had Trayvon been armed, a different tune would be sung; we are talkng a young kid and (from the pictures) a much bigger adult male. When authority figures can abuse authority, especially in this manner, than the outcry will be as it is. The Bounty, although i personally dont agree, called for the man, not his life. If he was as remorseful as reported, and feels the way he does, then step forward. If I did something I stand by, I wouldnt talk thru others, I would say it myself. He must of "felt" justified to pull the trigger, so be justified in the consequences of shooting someone.Just sounds like a little image repairing and backsliding.

I hope Zimmerman gets what he deserves, truly. If it were a black man killing a white kid,JAIL.
Now, pudas is correct, black people(majority) are always quick, even when caught in the wrong on camera
especially, to turn the situation racial. If they dont get a job position due to being unqualified or not proving your responsible enough its cause your black. Some bosses are guilty of racism and I believe in karma and they, the bosses who pull that crap are the liabilty to those compancies. Racial uprises hurt more innocent people. REMEMBER

Of course I would only think that if I were a conspiracy theorist...which of course I am. Do we need to add White Hispanic to all of the government forms now? Do you think White Hispanic's qualify for affirmative action or are they "too white"? How white is too white anyway? 1/2? 1/4? 1/8? 1/16? Do you think CNN did the "too white" math before calling his a white hispanic? Somehow I doubt it.

My thoughts exactly. This seems to be a new angle for mainstream media – using the modifier "white" to describe Hispanics, especially when it involves a crime against blacks. One minority killing another minority does not fit their narrative of "white racism" so describing Zimmerman as a "white Hispanic" is their way of keeping this narrative alive.

Seriously??? Trayvon vs. Emmett? Not even close. What type of j-schoold did you attend? Enquiring minds want to know.

Justice has yet to even begin here. It's a very sad story and my prayers go out to Trayvon's family. But, to be quite honest, if PresBo, the media, Sharpton, and the rest of the community organizers weren't trying to use this for their personal gain, Justice would be handled without bias and Zimmerman, depending on the DA's preference, would probably be found guilty for murder 1 and definitely for murder 2. As it stands, it will be impossible for the State to find an unbiased, objective-minded jury.

Again, my heart goes out to Trayvon's family. His life was cut way too short.

But, the circus developing around this trajedy is more like that of California vs. OJ Simpson. Objectivity will be lost and politics and race will duke it out in the media rather than a court of law.

Totally agree. If this was racially motivated the guy should go down hard. If this was an unfortunate mistake the guy should go down but maybe not as hard...but definitely some jail time. If he was attacked by the kid by mistake, thinking that he himself was a bad guy then he should probably get off. Given all I have read, good and bad about Zimmerman he sounds like a fairly normal guy (given that normal these days is a pretty lax concept). However, we now will never know if justice was served as he has been convicted by the media, the politicians and public as whole. So actual justice being served at this point is improbably if not impossible. For the african american posters...think about a time not so long ago that when there was a rape or murder they would round up the local blacks and hang them on the spot. That is the same as hanging this guy in the media...its mob justice and its just as wrong now as it was back then.

    This is ridiculous.

And blatantly proof that the media is simply lazy as hell.

You can't equate a young black man being killed in a Southern state many decades ago to a young black man being killed now by a neighborhood watch guy who is Hispanic.

    Two different situations entirely.

One was the intentional murder of a black male child and the other looks to simply be the mistaken actions of someone who agitated a young black man into confronting him when it did'nt need to happen.

All those years back it was pure hatred that caused the killer to shoot.

Todays incident is a guy that thought he had the right to push a situation into where he could use a firearm to resolve it and he was mistaken.

That the police did'nt see it that way can be resolved.

But the media wants to restart a race war in America and always has.

It sells newspapers, radio news time (and ads) and sells ad time on tv too.

Stop trying to fan the flames of hate and let's move through the justice system to resolve this.

We are a much better nation them we were sixty some years ago.

It's just that the news media can't stand to face that.

I think the point of this article as well as the case is being greatly missed. Truth is racism exists and no matter how may black friends you have or white friends you have, you still feel some type a way about another race as well as your own. Martin was minding HIS business when he was approached by someone who needed to mind their own. Zimmerman was not a cop nor was he acting on any legal stance. He made decisons that ended a persons life. Wether or not there was a scuffle was irrelevant. He was bigger than, only person I know who brings a gun to a knife fight is a coward. There should have been a better investigation, period. First thing you are taught in Criminal Justice/Law is that no life is greater than the other and in order for self defense to be warranted you have to defend yourself with the same force equal to what is being presented to you. But we all know how the law works, or lack there of.

Well I know in my state its called manslaughter and its an easier conviction than murder. That's what they should going after this guy for...involuntary manslaughter since they will never get a murder conviction...well not legally anyway.

For those saying it wasn't pre-planned out, so it's covered by the law...keep in mind that Zimmerman was on the phone with the police, had given his disposable phone # out to them and then they asked for his address. He started giving it to the police, stopped and then said this: ""Oh crap, I don't want to give it all out, not the way this kid is.". It implies that he was already debating to himself what he was planning on doing. He was still stalking the kid after being told he need not do that. For those who think a kid should be pursued to this extent by anyone who isn't a police officer...you have deep mental issues, as Zimmerman has already proven by assaulting an officer prior to this. For those making this a people wearing clothes this way or that...I don't like the baggy pants thing either, but..it's not a race that does that and it had nothing to do with this crime. Zimmerman will be arrested at some point...bet on it, because if he doesn't, he'll be a target for someone out there who has as much respect for the law as he does, which is little to none. Truly, it's better for him if they arrest him, finish the investigation and either send him to trial or dismiss the case with insufficient evidence. A note to the racists out there commenting, or more specifically...trolling on this thread...grow up already and KNOW that ALL humans are created equal. P.S. You aren't going to annoy me..trollers...as I don't waste my time listening to your garble. That and I don't bother with a thread after I've said what I had to say. 😉 P.P.S. Everyone in america is missing the most important thing, Trayvon was killed by the "stand your ground" law. This has nothing to do with race. That is the easy way out blame race. Haven't blacks killed blacks or whites killed whites? I am black and I would feel the same way if this was two white people involved. Can we all agree that a life was take away way too soon. Is a black life worth less or more than a white life. That is what was at issue with Emmett Till. At that time it was against the law for blacks to talk to whites in certain instances. What changed? The law is what was changed. Get this stupid law off the books. If you do that then this will never happen again. Use this tragedy to change for the positive. Focusing on race makes this a divisive issue. Focusing on wearing hoodies is even dumber. Focusing on both of these issues confuses that fact that a young life was taken for no rational reason.

Trayvon Martin's case still has some facts that need to come out. But it's quite obvious that it wasn't pre-meditated. Guess what? We as black people don't like getting crap from other people just because of what some people have in their mind as what is a criminal or a threat, and what is perceived as good and safe.

Got news for you, I don't like thugs either. I'm an educated black man, but in our society, I'm just seen as another black man that deserves crap from other people. Does that sound fair? Not in the least. But I get it whether I'm dressing in a suit and tie, or whether I have a hoodie on. That's the point. We are tired of being stereotyped and missed treated, just because of a skin pigmentation. It isn't right for it to happen to you, and it isn't right for us to have to deal with it.

Trayvon had the right to walk the public streets of the neighborhood where Mr. Zimmerman lives. how is that a crime? It's ok to stereotype all of the black people YOU SEE as bad, but then ok to stereotype all caucasian people YOU SEE as good: even though there are white people that have "stolen" billions of dollars from other white and black people through ponzi schemes. Hatred is wrong, regardless of the skin color of the person perpetuating it. But, there has been a historic travesty globally of racism to people of color. Not exclusively. But it has had centuries to perpetuate into the psyche of generations.

Perfect example. One thing people don't realize is that CNN has been reporting Zimmerman as a White Hispanic. Now I know many thought that sounds crazy, because to you that are of the white ethnicity, a hispanic is a hispanic. But no, not to a latino. In fact, if you speak to a Colombian, Puerto Rican, etc that are of a light/fair skin complexion, they will most certainly not see themselves as "one of them", a darker complexion latino.

In other words, they will see themselves as descendants of Indian tribes, rather than descendants of african slaves during the slave trade. You know, the whole mentality to black is "dirty, negative, bad", while white is "good, clean, untainted". Those stereotypes still exists today. In actuality, those fair skinned latinos can claim both heritages, the european, and the african. But, they know of the advantage they have assimilating into the caucasian culture, rather than embracing their african descendant heritage.

Racism has permeated and ingrained itself in so many facets of life that we think not talking about it, and sweeping it under the rug will make it go away by itself. It will not. And as long as there are people out there that believe the world revolves around them and only them, then there will continue to be conflict.

I don't believe any one race is better than the other, and there are racist black people, just as there are racist white, korean, latino, etc. But as long as an injustice occurs against people like what has happened to Mr. Martin (RIP), then us people of color are always gone to feel even more animosity towards this prejudice mindset in american culture.

How can anyone say anything against a "kid" walking through a PUBLIC neighborhood with a hoodie on? How could he be the fault of his own murder, when he was simply walking on a public street? He did have the right to do that. He wasn't trespassing. Mr. Zimmerman has not been detained or charged by the authorities for ANYTHING! That's the injustice that people are yelling about.

I could go to jail with handcuffs on for being almost CLOSE to over the legal limit of drinking alcohol allowed while driving a car. CLOSE to a state's legal intoxication limit is enough to be arrested on the road driving a vehicle. Mr. Zimmerman killed another person with his gun. And he's still walking around with no restrictions! If you can't understand that, then you don't want to understand your biased views. And you are close to racist, if not already there in your mind.

The Till story morphed into "killed for just whistling at a wht woman". I recall the original story. Emitt was a brash young blk from chicago visiting his cousin who walked with him to the store where the lady worked. Till had his cousin laughinghysrterically telling him what he would say to the woman and was dared to do so. This was no whistle- It was as as insulting and vulgar – bet you got some gooood p..... Well there are some things a person can say to one's daughter or wife that will stir some violent emotions. Try saying such a thing to a blk woman and see what her husband tries to do to you.

I do know that most what passes for media in the US has not reported all the witness evidence that the Sheriff Dept was considering, and the case was in no way closed yet. No comparisons like this can be made till the case is closed. I know the case of Emmett Till, and this ain't it. This inflammatory and inaccurate drivel by Blake serves nothing but sensationalism, that is my point.

Really ? It's like comparing high school basketball to the NBA.I think the bias in media reporting is actually contributing to racism in this country. These news organizations rely on laziness. They know that most people don't make the effort to go outside of the main news sources like CNN, FOX,MSNBC,etc. There's a lot of whites who are hip to the game CNN continue's to play.Stats don't lie. You're 8 times more likely to be attacked by a black if you're white than the other way around ; yet on CNN, you would think the opposite.CNN's bias is going to backfire once the majority of us wake up.

Black have an issue from within their sub-culture that disallows them from "assimilating". This is the main reason for racism today(except maybe in the South). Many whites have no issue with blacks who have assimilated. It's the blacks who have given up looking for a job or an education, (the ones that couldn't find a career in Sports Or Music and turn to crime. These are the blacks that created the environment that killed Trayvon.

Yes, we should talk about urban crime. But, its not just black on black. Its Hispanic on Hispanic and white on white. We can't say that this crime is less offensive because "blacks kill each other all the time." That's like saying a suburbanite white women being murdered by her husband doesn't matter because poor white men beat their wives all the time. That statement is ridiculous and so is the first. I think "most" whites are not truly racist, but that doesn't mean we don't have periods of ignorance. I grew up in an all white rural town. I went to college and met my first practicing jews and muslims. I met children of immigrants, black students, etc. It was an eye opening experience. I wasn't racist, but I learned very quickly how much I just didn't know or understand. When my dear friends father got lost coming to parents weekend, he was pulled out of his very expensive car and treated like a drug dealer only 4 blocks from campus. He was a Doctor who had immigrated here from Jamacia and was giving his daughter a world class education. I couldn't believe the way he was treated in 1998. It was shocking for me to learn this stuff still happens even in relatively affluent college towns. We whites might not be "racist" but too often, we just don't "Get it."

I think it unfair to compare Emmett Till to Treyvon. This is not to take anything away from either young boys' deaths, but in Emmett Till's day and location, it was accepted (and even the local law) to treat whites and non-whites differently.

Till was beaten badly and his lifeless body tied to the wheel of a cotton gin with barbed wire then dumped into a river. Had the shooter in Treyvon's murder did this, he would be public enemy #1. Till's killers openly boasted about what they had done, and were not prosecuted for several decades.

The issue with Treyvon's death is stereotyping and bad decisions both from a man with a gun and the local police department. The shooter in this case claimed self-defense, and was not questioned past that. Thankfully, there is the testimony of Treyvon's girlfriend to counter the argument. This is both a crime and incompetence – without question – but not to the level that Emmett Till's was. The two are not comparable on any level, and to suggest so indicates a lack of understanding of Emmett Till's story.

I am black, and I have experienced firsthand the discrimination that led to this poor boy's death. It is definitely something we need to deal with, but we must understand the fight that went before us in order to fight the different battles we deal with today.

Are both cases retarted yes they are and if you want to make it a thing over race go ahead. That's not going to help though so I am not falling for the trap.
This case with Trayvon, was allowed to happen because of a self defense law. Which George Zimmerman, is using at this time for him not to do jail time. However, that defense is or should be thrown out. Because Zimmerman, who pursued Trayvon, and confronted him was clearly not defending him self.
Trayvon was walking while Zimmerman, was driving. So George had to for one stop his car and park it. Get out follow Trayvon, confront him and then shoot him. You see if anyone at this point had the right to defend himself it was actually Trayvon.

If you are Trayvon, you notice a car pulls up to you. Then the driver gets out and starts following you or walking towards you. It doesn't make any sense for George to be a victim.

It's like this at school when your in a fight. The kid who hits first gets into the most trouble. That's because the other kid was defending himself.

So if I was a teacher I saw two kids fighting right after break it up. I say who started this the kids watching my witnesses point to that kid. I send him to the principals office or jail. The other kid I let him off cause he didn't do anything wrong.

I am just going on and on I know. What I am trying to say its about the laws in our country that allow race crimes to happen. Where people can get away with it. Is it right absolutely not it's not right. But sick people live in America that so long as they can get away with something they will.

We need to take a really good hard look at our laws. I mean with tasers you don't need a gun. You Can still protect yourself and no one has to die. Something like that you know. But no joe smo should have a gun.

If we all heard about it last month we would still be protesting it. Because it came to light after a month without an arrest, THAT is what is adding fuel to the fire. It's like they were trying to keep it a secret. Had they arrested Zimmerman in the first place, it wouldn't be as bad as it is now. So the Black Panthers are calling for Zimmerman's head. If it had been a white kid are you saying the KKK wouldn't be calling for Zimmerman's head?

Why is such a minority, a majority of the problems in this country? For 50 years of my life, it's the same race complaining after this country has bent over backwards for this one group. America is not America. America is now only groups. American Gay Men, America Gay Woman, American Seniors, American Blacks, American Latinos. I was walking in New York a couple weeks ago and a group of mouthy blacks were pushing CDs on people walking by and I can't describe the filthy remarks these guys were making at people minding their own business. Yesterday coming of a subway at 4th Ave, a group of hooded young black kids bossing subway riders exiting the station to get out of their way and they would make provoking comments trying to stir up a fight, which I call traps to start the race circle of gain that has been going on in this country. I wish someone would do a news piece on recording the behavior of the black street youth in action. I thought to myself yesterday, no wonder someone shot one of these trouble makers as saw this half dozen hooded black youths pushing and provoking people minding their own business. No one talks about the Zimmerman kid having a broken nose and a cracked head from the skittle candy buying kid. I think the skittle kid saw Zimmerman following him, turned around and started running his mouth like the black kids in the inner cities today then punched Zimmerman so hard that he broke his nose.Zimmerman in fear of his life, pulled the gun and shot the kid. Did the Skittles kid need to die, I say NO. I think if the Skittles kid didn't run his mouth and punch the Zimmerman kid then he would be alive today. I think I am a realist, not a racist. Black people only start the rallying and the Al Sharpton types only come out when something affects their group. They could care less if a white person was shot. This country has turned into what's best for the Latino groups, the illegal immigrants, the black groups so politicians can get the vote and not what is best for all. Why is it so many other groups that come to this country work hard to become an American asking for nothing, yet this Black Group just wants and wants and wants. Look at college and professional sports. One hardly sees a white basketball player on the court or on the football field – it's mainly blacks. Have you looked at any Ford commercials. They only have Latinos, blacks and woman as speakers. They finally put a white man on and had him make a fool of himself. Look in New York – almost every meter police person is black or maybe Lantino. Even the news media tried to make Zimmerman white. What is the matter with this country? America is America the groups and everyone knows it. If blacks want to know why they are not liked, the answer is people are tired of their unwarranted, never ending whining and their in America's face of I'm Black. We all know it's true.

Your a realist and probably a rascist. 50 years ago, the FBI head (J. Edgar) was following black leaders like MLK the same way Zimmerman followed Martin – to the same result. Only one race was subjected to what the black race faced in the South. Everyone cites Martin as being mouthy and aggressive, but only Zimmerman (in '05) was charged with felony Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer and Resisting Arrest with Violence; that's who was following and confronting. If the kid had that in his personal hisstory you'd be screaming, but with ZImmerman, you're silent. Why?

You obvious live in a bubble and have no real clue about what it means to be Black in this country. It is no accident that Blacks make up 12% of the population but Black Males are imprisoned more than any other race in this country. It is no accident that most schools have a 20-40% graduation rate for Black males, it is no mistake that HIV infection rates of Blacks here in America mirror that of 3rd world countries, it is no mistake that regardless of the wealth this country has gained from 400 years of unpaid labor from enslaved Africans that Blacks do not own even 1% of this countries wealth. It is no accident that media stereotypes Blacks more than any other Race on TV or Film as violent and ignorant on (this began with Birth of A Nation by the Way). If you really think none of these things have an impact on what you see today you are in denial. Check out the Schott Report or books like The new Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. There is a war going on....it is simply to exterminate Black Men. No one should ever be killed for the way they look or dress.....

The national percentage of crime committed by young black men, and the natural profiling that comes about because of it, is no ones fault except young black men. Want to change the perception, lets see a drop in crime among young black males to where it equates to their percentage of the population in general. Quit expecting others to make the change, and quit making excuses for their behaviour. I have a right to watch anyone I suspect might be up to no good in my own community. Not to mention realize what is pain of a black person and be able to tell the difference between hurt and ignorance. Bottom line.....all black people aren't the same. I'm 33 years old, African- American woman who has experienced racism in my childhood. THAT WAS IN THE 80s! Not that long ago. I've traveled the world and met all races of people and have many friends of different races. I look to them as my brothers and sisters and will hurt anyone that hurts them. But I also learned how to weed out the ones that are not true to me and except me for my skin complexion. Just do your research. Brandy, I've suffered racism too. I'm white. I've travelled half way around this world and back 4 times. I've seen prejudice and racism of all sorts. I could go into a long explanation but my observations boil down to this: people hate stupid. A short example – driving. You hate that jerk that is swerving through traffic, driving on the shoulder, and cutting people off because of the stupid things that jerk is doing. You can categorize that jerk into any stereotype that seems appropriate at that moment. However, in doing so, you will ignore someone else who isn't being a jerk but fits into the same category as the jerk. You hate the jerk for being stupid, not for being whatever category the jerk fits into. For clarificaion, "you" is in the general sense, not specifically Brandy
