Trayvon's death: Echoes of Emmett Till?

By John Blake, CNN

(CNN) -  Both were African-American teenagers who left home and never came back. Both forced the nation to talk about unwritten racial codes. Both didn’t live to see what symbols they became.

Trayvon Martin and Emmett Till.

They died 57 years apart, but their names and legacies may be forever merged. Some are saying Martin, a 17-year-old black teenager who was shot to death by a white Hispanic neighborhood watchman is on the verge of becoming this generation’s Emmett Till.

Thousands of angry Americans – of various races - have taken to Facebook and news sites and the streets to compare Martin’s fate to Till, the 14-year-old black boy who was murdered in Mississippi in 1955 for allegedly violating an unwritten Southern racial code by whistling at a white women.

Washington Post writer Eugene Robinson invoked Till in Martin’s case to say black men still wear a “bull’s-eye” throughout their lives.

Though he stopped short of comparing Martin’s case to Till’s, calling such comparison “facile … a disservice to history and to the memory of both young men.”   But, he added, “it is ridiculous to imply that nothing has changed.”

Is the comparison fair?

Mark Naison, an African-American Studies and History professor at Fordham University in New York puts it this way: “Emmett Till broke the code of his time by speaking in a suggestive, teasing way to a white women - Martin by wearing a hoodie and walking at night through a white neighborhood. The reason for the second death is every bit as outrageous as the reason for the first.”

Martin died February 26, while walking to his father’s home. Police say he was shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida, who said he was acting in self-defense. Martin was unarmed, carrying a bag of Skittles candy and an iced tea, according to police.

A lawyer for George Zimmerman, the neighborhood volunteer, says his client is not a racist, is of mixed race himself, and had mentored two children of a black woman. Now, a month after Martin died, Zimmerman still has not been arrested.

Martin’s death has re-ignited debate over the public perception of black men.

“I don’t think anyone doubts that if the race of those two were reversed that the perpetrator would be arrested,” says Chris Johnson, one of the creators of “The Question Bridge,” an interactive exhibition that focused on black men, “the most opaque and feared demographic in America,” according to organizers.

The Question Bridge” exhibition toured the country this year, showing videos of black men posing and answering questions of black men from different generations. Johnson said it was designed to shed many of the labels attached to black men - such as "criminal" - by getting them to talk openly about them.

The questions were abstract, but Martin’s case made it more personal, Johnson says: It shows many black men are still feared and shackled by stereotypes, just as they were in Till’s time.

Even so, much has changed since the 1950s.

Till was visiting relatives in Money, Mississippi, when he allegedly flirted with a white woman in a store. He was abducted at night from his great uncle’s home, tortured and murdered. His body was dumped in a river.

Two white men were arrested, and indicted by a Grand Jury.

A relative of Till identified the two men in court as the men who kidnapped his nephew. The jury deliberated 67 minutes before acquitting the two, who were photographed grinning and laughing in court.

Till’s death drew people’s attention to a prejudiced and corrupt legal system in the Jim Crow South. Martin’s death is drawing people’s attention to the conduct of Florida police and the state's gun laws, says Randolph McLaughlin, a New York attorney and professor at Pace Law School in New York.

“Just as in Emmett Till’s case, nothing was done by local authorities,” he says. “It was fine to lynch a black kid then. It’s fine to kill a black kid now.”

Till’s mother took advantage of an emerging technology – television – to mobilize the nation on behalf of her son. She also insisted that photos of her son’s deformed corpse be made public.

Till’s mother’s decision to go to the media galvanized the nation, says David Aretha, author of “The Murder of Emmett Till.”

“When Emmett’s coffin arrived via train in Chicago, she touched the box and fell to the ground. As five men lifted the wrapped body out of the box, she wailed ‘Oh, God. Oh, God. My only boy,’” Aretha says.

Television cameras recorded the heartbreaking scene.

When Aretha heard about the death of Trayvon Martin, he says he thought about the similarities to Till’s death.

“The murders themselves were appalling, but what really angered the general public was the injustice - highly questionable laws and customs that allowed for whites to freely murder blacks in the Jim Crow South and for someone to almost randomly shoot anyone in the Martin case,” Aretha says.

Still, there are some significant differences between Till and Martin.

Till violated the racial codes of the South by his swagger and talking to a white woman, says James Peterson, an African-American studies professor at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.

Martin didn’t do anything, Peterson believes.

“Trayvon Martin was literally walking to his father’s house,” Peterson says. “This is racial profiling and vigilante justice gone wrong.”

Blacks had little political power in 1955 - couldn’t even vote in many parts of the South. Today, of course . The president of the United States is black, as well as the nation’s attorney general, Peterson notes.

At a news briefing, the president expressed sympathy for Martin’s family, and added a personal note:.

“If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon,” Obama said.

Till’s case had unexpected political consequences, Aretha says.

“The Till case, without question, fueled the emerging civil rights movement,” Aretha says. “… Someone asked Rosa Parks why she didn’t get up [from her bus seat] when she was threatened [with arrest for disobeying a law that required blacks to give up their seats to white people.] She said she thought about Emmett Till and couldn’t go back anymore. We will see if the murder of Trayvon Martin sparks another kind of social movement.”

The only similarities are that it was a tragedy that took a young persons life and that it could be a catalyst of change. Outside of that the comparison of this event to that of Emmett Till is a horrible injustice to the memory and occurrences of what happened in the Mississippi Delta and blatant race baiting. I find this a sensationalist attempt that will do nothing but widen a divide that has already been manipulated and engineered by factions that want this to become about so much more than the issues at hand. This should be about a horrible law, a mistake taken by someone under that law, and the lose of life that occurred. Instead we are now caught up in race, and only race. That path will not find justice for Emmett Till, for Martin or for Zimmerman.

Unfortunately most of America still lives life seperating their crayons by color "if you know what i mean" haha. There will never be a day when people will be color blind. So, for us that are color blind we must teach our young ones how to see past the color and into the personality. Look into the future and not dwell on the past.... The more we dwell on the past the more it will repeat itself!

The way people are talking about this situation makes me kinda hate how people react..... This whole case started off as Another White man being racist and killing a Black kid, But then whoops he is not White and takes care of Black Kids.... We need a new motive for this guy but it has to deal with race....... Everything in this country is about race. "The white man holding the black man down" I have a ton of black friends and the only time i notice they are black is when i ask them a question and they say "is it because im black" then i say " are you asking cuz im white" and we all die laughing .. I dont quite understand why we cant look at this case as an american killed an american kid? Racism is just a scapegoat all races use. Come on America GROW the hell up! If they find that he is guilty then they will punish him.... let the justice system work. When he gets off scott free then do your protests. Wait Before you judge. And always remember in our Justice system be lucky that you are "innocent until proven guilty" not "guilty until proven innocent" if it was that way, half of america would be getting locked up for boggus things.

Race is secondary here. Let's say there were both white. Mans sees kid and calls cops, cops say don't follow the kid we will be there and check it out. man takes gun and follows kid and then shoots him. Police find him there with gun and dead kid and let him go.

It the story were like that and both were white it would be enough.

Zimmerman have a violent history facts: Arrested 3 times, Zimmerman, violently assaulted a police office got away with it, if he had gone to Jail Martin would still be alive. Secondly involved in a domestic dispute that resulted in a restraining order with a girlfriend. Thirdly resisted arrest and assaulted a police officer...also a woman...he walked on that. Fourthly Zimmermann was fired from a security guard job for picking up a woman and throwing her across the room again a woman. Marin Crime record ZERO, Zimmerman latest crime speed stalking a unarmed teenage, when told NOT TO by the police dispatcher. Quote from the Dispatcher "I don't think it's a good idea" Advice from the LAW not to chase Martin but he got out of his car and followed Martin anyway. He is 41 year old, Martin is 17 year old don't we tell our kids NOT to talk with strange MEN. Zimmerman got a track record of violence someone you wouldn't want your kids speaking to. He alive and Martin Dead, this man planned his crime, but like his fans didn’t realize that the world will be watching. The arresting police wanted him charge also.

America is still extremely racist if Zimmerman had killed a white 17 year old boy he be in Jail and charge we ALL know this to be true. I am white and not from USA, I am old enough to know when lynching was the norm in the USA. This is new kind of lynching. He doesn't have a baby either, I heard his parent interview over her in Europe.

Take this case out of the court of politics and stick it back in the criminal court system where it belongs. If they have enough evidence to charge the guy, then do. If not, too bad. You can't just arrest and trie someone because it makes people feel good.

However, Zimmerman would have been immediately arrested if the boy carrying Skittles and an iced tea bottle with no weapon was white. The outcry is that Zimmerman has not been arrested and is relying on his family to tell his version of the story.

Great question. Want to know the answer? Because the three black men were arrested and charged! If Zimmerman were arrested this story would have been a blip on the radar. No, they hunted down the 3 black guys when the victim was white. When the victim was black, nada. The evidence presented so far makes a clear case for him to be charged (not necessarily convicted, but charged and put to the judicial test). I GUARANTEE that if the guy laying face down was white, Zimmerman would have been indicted already. I think he would likely be indicted even if he was white and the victim was white. But the victim was black, and therefore gets different (separate and definitely not equal) justice. Heck, if the roles had been reversed I'm not sure that Trayvon would have been charged. Hispanics don't have a record of getting measurably better justice in our country than African-Americans do.

But this isn't about Zimmerman's possibly racist motives. It is about the racist (whether intentional or not) reaction of the police department after the fact. Perhaps Zimmerman will be acquitted, who knows. Not us, because he hasn't even been charged.

He was arrested, just not detained and charged. They did handcuff him, bring him into the police station and recommend charges against him, but the DA didn't feel they had enough evidence to contradict his SYG claim at the time.

Hopefully we will get some more insight into the full process behind this. In the meantime, we all need to understand that the state of Florida is doing what they are able to within the extent of the law to pursue justice. We all know that our system of justice has its flaws, but it beats us jumping to conclusions and trying someone in the media.

That said – Trayvon's story is a tragedy and I hope for the sake of his family and his memory that justice is served in this case.

The school that suspended Trayvon should be held accountable for their actions. Who determined that in fact the traces found in Trayvon's backpack was indeed marijuana? What was Trayvon's response to this incident? The young man's toxicology test revealed that he tested negative for drugs. Had he not been suspended, he'd be alive today and we would not be dealing with this American injustice. School's need to re-visit policies such as these.

What ties this case to Emmett Till's case is the utter lack of justice from law enforcement. The American legal system keeps saying that 'black' life is cheap and the African American community is rightly lashing back. No justice, No peace. Racism is a mental illness. So don't expect rational responses from racists, white, black or other. We all know that Zimmerman is a flawed individual. Whether he is racist or not is irrelevant. Police cover up is relevant. Had the police done their job, this would not be such a big issue.

it should not matter what color the victim or the criminal are Trayvon should get justices and Zimmerman should pay for what he did. he didn't know this yougman first hand so how did he know that he was up to no good? did Trayvon do something to him to think that he was going to hurt him or someone else? he was a teenager just like i was once upon a time did stupid things but that don't mean that i was out to hurt anyone and should be shot because" i look like i was up to no good" but if Zimmerman does not pay for what he did on earth he will pay when he meets his maker and then justice will be served for Trayvon.

This case in not a good comparison to that of Till. For the person saying Till shouldn't have flirted, he DIDNT know, his cousins dared him and he didnt know how bad it was there since he did not live in Mississippi. You have a cruel heart. About Trayvon, just because he posted things on his FB/Twitter or whatever doesnt mean he deserved to die. Thats the age where kids act up and some learn and get back on the right path. Whos to say Zimmerman didnt get up in his face and started interrogating him like a police wannabe so Trayvon felt he had to push him out of his face and thats where everything started. Yall would have done the same thing if yall had some stranger in your face, so dont go blaming all this on Trayvon. Zimmerman could have shot him in the arm or considering he was at close range. That would have stopped Trayvon instead of doing a deadly shot. He followed Trayvon just because he assumed he was up to no good. Also rememeber Zimmermans dad is a former judge. They all stick together. Sad Case. He probably will be charged with manslaughter and get probation or a couple of years. Some of yall are evil, Karma for yall..:)

Emmett Till was 14, a child, murdered by white men for flirting with a white woman.

Trayvon Martin was 17, a young man (and yes those 3 years make a huge difference, don't let all the pictures of a younger Trayvon fool you), killed in a self-defense scenario by a man he was viciously attacking (straddled, hitting him in the head).

I am saddened that us as americans, black, white or whatever are going at it about a boy and his past that..IT DOESN'T MATTER and his life was taken by someone who thought he had the authority to do so..i know i saw another article that said zimmerman wasn't on any registration for the national neighborhood watch..POINT he wasnt suppose to interact with trayvon, i am not here to blast anyone or anything, but,i think these racial slurs against one another, and these hateful things about how ppl on here are saying i hope you get murdered..like really, thats is not anything to say to anyone..i do not see color and never will..in the eyes of God everyone is ONE and EQUAL..if you dont believe this, then it is okay..i understand.. but either way Trayvon's fb,or his gold teeth,or him holding up his middle finger has nothing to do with the fact that he was killed. People need to look past color and see that the act of which zimmerman committed is wrong.Trayvon being taller or not or weighing more or less than zimmerman doesnt matter, and innocent boys life was taken and thats all that matters.

ALSO WHO CARES IF TRAYVON WAS PUTTING UP A FIGHT,i would have to if someone came at me the wrong way, anyone would have if you feel threatned and someone attacked you. again i do not know the facts but as it has been presented in articles, thats what im going off of

Most of the the tweets were retweets. Do you not know how twitter works? Also his father is a trucker so he's not around alot. After trayvon started acting out, he probably had Trayvon staying with him to give him some guidance, so there's no guarantee he would become a criminal. I have a friend who was in a gang as a teenager and had dui and assault charges in early adulthood. He later joined the navy and is now putting himself through college to earn his bachelor's degree.

  20. Fact checker

    1. Trayvon was in an unfamiliar neighborhood, walking in the middle of night, in the rain and looking around. He carried an iced tea and a bag of skittles. No weapons.
    2. Zimmerman declared himself neighborhood watch captain, carried a loaded gun, and was seen as "overzealous" by many residents.
    3. Zimmerman spots the teen walking in the area, wearing a hoodie and looking around. He calls the police.
    4. While telling the police where he is, he gets out of his vehicle and starts pursuing Martin. The dispatcher told Zimmenrman that, "We don't need you to do that". Despite the dispatcher's words, Zimmerman continues his pursuit of Martin.
    5. Zimmerman catches up with Martin at some point and is asked, "Why are you following me?" by Martin.
    6. this is the fuzzy part: either Zimmerman engaged the boy or Martin engaged him. Either way, there was no way for Martin to shoot Zimmerman, as Martin was unarmed. Also, the engagement would not have occured if Zimmerman remained in his vehicle and didn't pursue Martin.
    7. Some witnesses say they heard cries for help, then a gunshot.
    8. Zimmerman is alive and Martin is dead.
    9. Zimmerman is neither taken into custody nor given alcohol/drug tests as is standard after a shooting.
    10. The "Stand your ground" law was intened to be used by people who were engaged without provocation, not by people chasing after someone. Had Zimmerman not pursued, this situation would not have happened.

Taking race out of it, Zimmerman should have been in custody, after a stop at the hospital for testing and attending to his proposed wounds.

My opinon: he should be charged with Manslaughter
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manslaughter

He pursued Martin without justification and as a result shot and killed Martin. Zimmerman was not an officer of the law and had no right to pursue Martin. Martin was within his right to walk through the neighborhood without being pursued.

Exactly, race aside these are the facts, and George should have been arrested regardless, but instead he said the one thing he knew would save him, and maybe even the reason he got a handgun in the first place, it was self defense! Forget the race issue, lets focus on the unnecessary use of deadly force after being told to stand down by police.

This is just a case of bad judgment to take a bag of skittles to a gunfight; nothing racist about it. Lesson: in Florida, one is wise to keep your words and fists to your self around legally armed men; now isn't that why they passed the law in the first place?

until all the facts are out there. there is no way these two cases are the same. there are witnesses that say martin was putting up a fight. and some say he just ran away. some witnesses said that zimmerman was defending himself and some say that he murder him in cold blood. which version is true?

and when will black people realized that al sharpton and jesse jackson are totally out to profit for themselves. how many times had them jumped on the bandwagon when a black person was wronged?remember the Tawana Brawley case? how many times have you seen or read about sharpton or jackson being racist themselves?

      Terrva,
I agree, that these to cases are not the same. Having read up on both of them, I do not agree with the comparison at all.

However, as far as Zimmerman "defending" himself against Martin, explain this: Was he defending himself when he got out of his vehicle and approached Martin? Was he defending himself when he followed Martin? Was he defending himself when he pulled out a gun on an unarmed Martin? A fight wouldn't have had to be put up if Zimmerman hadn't approached Martin.

Seriously. 911 advised Zimmerman that he need not approach or follow Martin. He did anyway. The bottomline is Zimmerman should have let Martin be on his merry way and both he and Martin would both sitting at home living their lives the way they both were before this horrible tradegy that neither deserved to befall them.

Being an African American woman myself, I do not really get off into the whole Jesse and Al hoop-rah. What they say matters not to me. Color matters not to me. What matters most to me is right and wrong. And to me, Zimmerman was dead wrong. He should have left that child alone. Period.

like i said before until the facts are proven people need to calm down. cause the problem with the media is that they sometimes stick to one said. and there are witnesses that said zimmerman was wrong and some say martin was wrong. and if zimmerman was wrong then he should be arrest and punished.

and i pray that the longer that zimmerman isnt arrested it doesnt turn into a war. i do not want to hear about a child or adult get beat up or murder because zimmerman havent been arrested. and eye for an eye will not make this right.

I am not going to make any judgements as to what Martin was doing, but you can't go around killing people for what you "THINK they MIGHT do". If the facts are true and Martin was approached by Zimmerman AFTER 911 told Zimmerman not to, then the argument of self defense for Zimmerman goes out the window. I also don't know what state law allows in Florida, but in California, you can't just carry around a loaded gun. If someone breaks in, you definitely have the right to shoot them, but that's certainly not the case here since Zimmerman approached Martin, not the other way around. So if Florida law prohibits the carrying of a loaded gun, then at the very least, Zimmerman should be charged for gun violations. The issue of manslaughter is a separate one which requires evidence of who the instigator was.

Lets get the facts before rushing to any judgement. The media and CNN is not helping to find the truth. Showing a picture of the victim as maybe a 10 or 11 year old child only fans the flames. It makes the the whole story look like a 33 year old man shot a 10 year old, not the 17 year old man who was nearly a foot taller than the shooter. Just saying.

    March 26, 2012 at 10:27 pm | Report abuse |
    • Shara

Martin being a nearly a foot taller than Zimmerman doesn't matter at all when Zimmerman had a gun and Martin didn't. Martin being taller didn't Martin when Zimmerman didn't need to get out of his vehicle and was also advised not to follow Martin but ignored this advice and did so anyway. And those pictures don't sway me either way. In fact I was wondering why it was they were showing such young photos of Martin myself. However, I'm not foolish enough to believe that a 17 year-old Martin couldn't put up a scuffle with a 28 year-old Zimmerman. But I am also not foolish enough to believe that an Arizona iced tea, a pack of Skittles two fists and two feet are deadlier than a gun either. I know full well how to handle a nine mil, I'm surgical with it, I'm a lot smaller than Zimmerman standing only at 5'5 130 lbs and no 17 year-old the size of Martin could come out of a scuffle alive with me either.

What happened to this young man is tragic. However, the correct response is to dig deep and wait for all the information to come out. Let all the facts come out so we can remove all the doubts and conjectures.

    Claims or rumors :

    1) Zimmerman was in a neighborhood watch and spotted a stranger. He called 911 and was advised by the 911 operator to not pursue the fleeing Martin. Zimmerman did pursue him. Let him explain in his own words why he did this.

    2) There are unconfirmed claims by Zimmerman's lawyer and a mystery witness that Zimmerman had head injuries. Let's look at any supposed medical records and check if they were self inflicted or if they were real.

    3) Some mysterious witness claims to have seen Zimmerman getting beaten up by someone. Let this person communicate with the special prosecutor and explain what it was that he saw.

I'm not saying that Zimmerman is not reckless as he shouldn't have gone after Martin when he took off, but to assume that this was a hate crime is still premature. Don't let this be another Professor Gates incident that was blown up to the national stage before all the facts are in.

776.041 Use of force by aggressor. —The justification described in the preceding sections of this chapter is not available to a person who:

    (1) Is attempting to commit, committing, or escaping after the commission of, a forcible felony; or

    (2) Initially provokes the use of force against himself or herself, unless:

    (a) Such force is so great that the person reasonably believes that he or she is in imminent danger of death or great bodily harm and that he or she has exhausted every reasonable means to escape such danger other than the use of force which is likely to cause death or great bodily harm to the assailant; or
    (b) In good faith, the person withdraws from physical contact with the assailant and indicates clearly to the assailant that he or she desires to withdraw and terminate the use of force, but the assailant continues or resumes the use of force.

That is the Florida law. I'm not a lawyer, but just from reading that it appears to me that you can be the aggressor or instigator and still claim self-defense. I could see a scenario where this could have easily happened.

Zimmerman pursues Martin and confronts him.
Martin either is scared or takes offense or whatever and protects himself by fighting back.
Zimmerman all of sudden is now on his back, getting pummeled by Martin and thinks "Oh My God, if I don't do something, he's going to beat me to death."
Zimmerman then shoots Martin in self-defense.

Obviously I don't know that this is what happened, but with the evidence that is being presented, you can't tell me 100% that something like that didn't happen.

This shows complete ignorance on the media's part. The media is not happy unless there is unrest. Typical Liberalist media crap. I agree the case should be FULLY investigated. I am sure the media is not reporting ALL the facts, just the ones that sell headlines and cause an uproar. If Zimmerman did not have cause or justification to shoot this teen, then he should face murder charges. I dont think he should get off by any means, because he was told by 911 to stop following him. Let's stop allowing the media to try this case and create chaos just for a quick sell of the headlines. This is not a hate crime. I think it was homicide, but not racial. Character is irrelevant ? News to me.Character tells a small story. It shows patterns, often gives a clear glimpse of who the person is.My problem is that time after time, blacks wanna do grown up things but never wish to accept the consequences.Did Emmet Till deserve to die ? No.Of course not.Did he deserve to lose some teeth and eat soup for a month ? Absolutely. You don't say that to any woman unless you were raised in a barn.Did Trayvon deserve to be killed ? Perhaps. The kid was 6'2 and it's medically proven that he attacked Zimmerman.Zimmerman had wounds.Once again, if you wanna be grown, you have to deal with big boy consequences.I guess what I'm saying is, black people can always dish it...but never take it.

And if he had not been killed for it, he certainly would not have deserved to had lost teeth for it. No one deserved to be touched in a violent way if they did something so simple. But sadly, in 1955, that was the world we lived in, and you would have fit right in.

And in Trayvon Martin's case, "perhaps" he deserved to be killled? No one deserved to have their life taken from them, least of all a child. The fact that you would say such a thing is ignorant. This is the reason why things are so bad these days, people like you talking out of their asses with no common sense whatsoever. I'm a black person and don't believe for a second that this crime is racially motivated, but then there are people like you who are feeding into the BS making it look more and more like that is the case. 42. READ THE HARD FACTS...THE STATISTICS SAY IT ALL

In the history of the United States, no unarmed white person or persons have ever been murdered by a white cop or other law enforcement personnel! It has never happened! Never ever! Remember Amadou Duallo? He was a young African immigrant living in New York City and a few years ago he was shot 41 times by four under cover NY detectives looking for a serial rapist! And to show you how cowars those cops were, they were under cover and in plain clothes and no one knew they were cops but as soon as they saw the young innocent black man stepped out of his building and not paying them any mind, they opened fire like it was a scene from the wild west, murdering him in cold blood. And they could have arrested the victim who was not the rapist they were looking for but these white cops in America are such cowards, they'd rather murder an innocent black person in cold blood than take precaution to save lives.

But that is just part of the travesty because during their federal trial, I could never forget how their defense attorney took the stand and held a wallet in his hand and told the jury that the victim was holding his wallet the way you would hold a gun and that triggered the detectives swift action. But the outrageous thing about the defense attorney's testimony is that during the trial, the Brooklyn neihborhood where Amadolo Duallo lived was said to be a high crime and very dangerousviolent neighbororhood. So just imagime that the victim steps out his high riser in Brooklyn late at night with his wallet in hand and exposed to be a target to be robbed! Well, unfortunately he was a target for these murderous coward white cops who were all acquitted on the grounds that the shooting was an "accident." But unless black people in this country unite once and for all and start to learn to love, respect and look out for each other, we would continue to be targets to the coward white cops of America!

In the last year alone within 30 miles of my house 2 unarmed white males have been killed by officers. One in Fullerton who was a homeless guy beaten and his with the taser gun over 15 times. Second was a white marine with 2 children in the car shot and killed in the parking lot of San Clemente high school. It happens all the time it's just that the national media does not pick up on it bcs it's not considered race related. Funny and ironic it's not racist bcs they were white. Think about what your saying...every white cop is racist towards blacks. Please

Kind of stretch to equate Till with Martin. Despite claims to the contrary, we have no eveidence that Martin was targetted because of race. The 911 tape DOES indicate that Zimmerman stalked Martin for no reason, and we know he shot martin for no apparent reason. The SYG law is an inadequte defense. If Martin threw the first punch, it was HE who was standing his ground, to a stranger who was harrassing him.

There are still SO many facts that need to come to light, and so much investigation to do. Angry people of any race, color, religion, etc will always jump on things such as this based more on emotion than actual intellect. It's terrible when a young person is killed like this, to be sure, but please try to remember that statistics can also be manipulated. I saw one that said a black man in Washington between the ages of 16 and 30 is 23 times more likely to be killed by gunfire that an white man. Sounds awful, and it is (we need better gun control), but how many of those young black men are killed because they are in gangs and due to black on black violence? Each group needs to control their own people first and teach them how to get along with others. We can ALL do better and must do better. And gun control is a must.

High rates of Black crime in more than 15 American cities since Obama's election have been countered with calls for the national guard to patrol the streets or martial law/emergency curfew's to be enacted/implemented to keep the peace, but now one shooting prompts Double J to bring up Black people's inability to pay mortgages they should have never gotten in the first place as justification for saying "Blacks are under attack."

No, Double J: Blacks aren't under attack. America has been under attack by outrageous levels of Black crime for decades, and we've continued to believe its the fault of white racism and the legacy of slavery for "the Blacks" inability to conjugate verbs, do addition and subtraction, and learn at a level passed the eighth grade.

We are now entering an era of hyper-instability, where the distrust between the races is growing at a pace not seen since white people fortified themselves in the suburbs of Detroit following the "Black Rebellion of 1967", leaving "the Paris of the West" to be run by Black people.

How'd that turn out? Oh... not so good.

You always wondered what it would take to make people "wake up" to the problems plaguing America: who would have ever thought it would take the shooting of a Black kid in a hoodie (with a sweet tea and a pack of Skittles) by a Hispanic named George Zimmerman to showcase the reality of what we have dubbed Black-Run America (BRA)?

I started this blog as a joke, a way to stay sane in a world seemingly dedicated to promoting nothing but 24/7 insanity. It's been almost three years since the first entry went up; now, four new books are on the verge of coming out that are all the work of one person (with editing by the ever valiant Mencken and contributions from a host of unnamed designers).

Double J and his ilk have doubled down on keeping alive the myth that white racism holds back the flow of Black progress. We at SBPDL have doubled down that the impending failure of Detroit showcases that the flow of Black progress was never more than the finite steam of water shot from a Super Soaker.

We could have been on Mars... remember that when you watch the first Black riot of 2012, courtesy of Black people posting iPhone videos onto WorldStarHipHop.

What is really fascinating is that you believe your own BS and apparently so do others with no justification for being "white under siege". What's your solution? Back to Africa? Genocide? These seem to be the usual response of the "civilized" white societies faced with these problems (e.g. KKK, Nazis, JBirch, ect.) I would have more respect for you if you did not try so very hard to couch your racism as a reasonable and logical argument.

Numbers say everything, and while I am not a racist, the facts are that our prisons hold more black people then any other race and that the worst places in this country are the ghettos where most white people are not welcome. Either way, from what the media has portrayed in relation to this incident, there has been an injustice as to the way this case has been handled. If this man truely pursued this young man while being directed not to by the 911 operator, then he has killed in cold blood and should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law as to send a message to the people and attempt to prevent this from happening again. Race will always be a factor of life so long as there is more then 1 race.

2010 U.S. Census Bureau: 12.6% of the poulation African American.

2009 Department of Justice/FBI crime statistics: 49% of arrests for murder and non-negligent manslaughter African American.

I think that those are facts.....what is close to what it is and what has occurred.

The FBI has a behavioral science unit and on their web page they call profiling an "art."

I try to hold my subjectivity in check and look at all individuals for who they are, regardless of existing preconceived notions. Like I know that dogs can bite and some dogs will bite a human but not all dogs will and probably most will not in a non-confrontational situation. But one would be a fool to disregard all prior knowledge and patterns of behavior and not be careful around a dogs.

Looking at those numbers, reading the news, both local and national, observing behaviors in day to day living situations..... if one thinks for themselves, shying from academia and PC, it's hard to remain objective and to not develop a preconceived notions looking at what is.

Where I live, walking with a hoodie doesn't mean you are shady or up to no good. Zimmerman acted like he wanted to be a hero or something. You can hear on the phone to the police, he chose to follow Martin when the police told him not to and that he said F*** something on the phone too. Zimmerman is obviously making up the story that he was confronted. If anything he confronted Martin for no reason, but simply based on the fact it was a stereotypical profile that because you wear a hoodie and have it on you are a shady person. Only people with crazy, whacko minds think like that and you can tell by the tone and expression on the phone he was sketchy himself. Like I said, where I live hoodies don't mean anything, except they are a piece of clothing worn by people because one they are comfortable and two they keep you warm.

To those who say there was no confrontation I ask you to look at yourself and ask if you are truly being objective. It is right in the police report....so the fact that the lame mainstream media have chosen to under-report the facts is no excuse. Zimmerman had a broken nose, a "Serious Laceration" on the back of his head and there was wet grass on the back of his shirt. He might be at fault for causing the altercation......but there was an altercation between those two. Why...because the evidence proves it. Not supporting Zimmerman here....just supporting the judicial process that looks at the facts in evidence....not those provided by the media.

The real problem is a truth that Americans are not ready to face. Race is a lie. Human beings can mix to the point that there is no real determination of race except appearance. Obama could have had a brother who looks just like his mother. His brother could just as easily be called White as Obama is called Black. Angela Davis once said that the word race was created by racists. It was created to separate and oppress human beings. The only end to the race problem is the elimination and disproving of this demonic lie.

Because the story is a set up and a kid was sacrificed in the name of the democrats to create a racial issue prior to an election. 62. race doesnt matter

Although race may be a motivating factor in this case let me lay this out. Everyone knows that when you have a hoodie pulled up over your head regardless of your race you look like a shady person. That's why when you walk into a bank they ask you to take the hoodie off your head.

Fact of the matter is this, regardless of your race, if you are walking around the streets with a hoodie on your head (white, black, hispanic, asian, arab, whatever) you look like you are up to something. In addition to that, if you attack someone while you have a hoodie on over your head and that person happens to be carrying a gun you're going to get shot. I don't care what race you are, if I am walking down my neighborhood and some hooded person attacks me, knocks me down, kicks me while I am down, I don't care what race you are. If I have a weapon I am going to defend myself.

This story needs to stop being made out as though it was some hate crime. Zimmerman was attacked and defended himself. At least that is what the AG is determining at this time.

STOP WITH ALL THE HATE RACIST PROPOGANDA

Mox nix about Mr. Zimmerman's feelings about Mr. Martin's skin color. Zimmerman, knowingly, willingly, and against instructions from the police pursued Mr. Martin for no other reason than Mr. Zimmerman had appointed himself neighborhood watchman. If, Zimmerman skates on this–and he may–the ridiculous law that allows it is the real travesty.

Very well stated. I wish everyone could see the situation as clearly. People of all colors are always looking for someone to blame, some form of injustice to gripe about. It's easier than facing the truth.
Bad things happen to good people. That is a fact of life. In this case it applies to everyone involved. Young Martin paid the ultimate price for a mistake. Zimmerman is paying as well. He may be alive, but his life has become a living hell. The only winner here is the media.

I absolutely concur. His clothes are just that, clothes! Zimmerman was over zealous about his role and used BAD judgement. He could have just followed Trayvon from a distance and observed him walking into a residence that he was welcomed to. I feel this is no different from a drunk driver killing someone. You didin't mean to kill that person, but you have to serve some time for your actions. And Zimmerman should serve some time.

Zimmerman shot an un-armed kid with a bag of skittles in his hand; there is no proof Martin attacked Zimmerman. Walking with a hoodie is not reasonable cause enough to shoot someone in cold blood, and Zimmerman is not even a Police officer to excercise that sort of authority.

While I agree that race is being overplayed here, your "hoodie" assessment is flawed. Banks don't make you take a hood off because it "makes you look shady". They make you take off a hoodie because it obscures you from view of cameras. Banks also prohibit sunglasses, hats and cell phones, as they could facilitate a robbery. Do sunglasses, hats or cell phones make one "look shady"? I'll be sure to inform most of hollywood that they look like robbers.

  64. NO JUSTICE IN AMERICA

What I find outrageous about this whole incident to begin with is how Zimmerman's white father came out and immediately defended his white heritage by denying that his son is white when he told the press that his son is Hispanic! But I've lived amongst Hispanics in the Northeast for many years in various neighborhoods and communities and I've never experienced a situation or occasion when Hispanics discriminated against African-Americans or targeted them! And although there have been cases in America where Hispanics and blacks have had their disagreements and confrontations, I know for a fact that Hispanics are the best friends that black America has ever had! This was indeed a race crime but this crime has nothing to do with the black/Hispanic community in America because the bound is as solid as it would ever be but that doesn't mean we should speak out against this crime and demand justice!

What I also find disturbing is that all those haters posting comments are trying tos say that the outrage over this murder is going too far because blacks kill blacks everyday! However, let me reiterate that although that is true that doesn't mean that when murders occur in the black community, there isn't an outrage and call for justice! Let's face it, every time there's a murder in the black community, members of the black community speak out against gang violence and guns and discuss ways to keep our youths on the right track. However, this murder committed by Zimmerman has taken national headlines simply because it is a racially motivated crime! Yes, a crime is a crime whether it is black on black or white Hispanic on black or vise virsa. But a race crime always take on more precedence or get more attention because after all, we fought a civil war because of racism and slavery. And if a diversified society like America is to endure and survive, we must always step forward and try to avoid hate crimes and racially motivated crimes from getting out of control! And this is very important because while a black on black crime may not trigger a race riot or widespread civil unrest, a black on white crime or a white Hispanic crime on black or vice versa could trigger a race riot and destabilized the entire country.

Perhaps if you look at the history of this country and the race riots that took place during the Jim Crow era in America, them you may get a better understanding as to why its very important for us as a nation to take a bold stand and condemn and try to prevent such hate crimes from occuring in America and getting out of control! aka: the Rodney King incident! Again for a diversified country like America to endure and survive, all of us, blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians and Native Americans must unite and find common ground to denounce evil whenever evil presents itself in our society! And if we do, we would all be winners because as the sacred saying goes, we are one nation under God!

So true, but you missrepresent the facts in this case. Recently three White boys pled guilty to the racially motivated killing of a Black man and there was not nearly the outrage expressed by Whites or Blacks about that case then there is about this case. Why? Because that particular case was cut an dried. A racist murder. Here it is not so cut an dried. You wish to see racial anomosity where ther is most likely none, just an over zealous cop wannabe. If he stereotyped Treyvon who is to blame. You probably don't like some of the answers to that question so you choose to ignore it. Ignoring problems don't make them go away.

I think the point here is that the people that you mention pled guilty. They were arressted, they went to court. The shooter in the Trayvon Martin case wasn't in court and the police department wasn't concerned about finding out the facts in this case. We don't know what happened and that's the problem. The neighborhood this incident occurred in is mixed, with Black, White an Hispanic residents. The shooter was Hispanic, victim was Black and the Police Chief of the department who investigated was White. A true picture of racially diverse America, yet the incident still happened. Why? If you were truly interested in finding solutions Mr. Blake you would address that question, but you will not, because to do so might lead to some uncomfortable answers.

    • NO JUSTICE IN AMERICA

      @ kaye

Yes blacks murdeer blacks in America all the time but there's a big difference why this crime took on more precedence and continues to get national attention! See, a black on black crime may not trigger a race riot and destabilize the entire nation, but a white on black crime may do so aka:Rodney King! Perhaps you're young and don't know much about your history, but we fought a civil war over racism and slavery in America for crying out loud!

And for decades during the Jim Crow era in America, race riots were frequent and widespread from coast to coast simply because of the oppressive Jim Crow system itself. Furthermore, when blacks murder blacks in the black community, do you think that other blacks don't condemn these crimes and demand justice? Do you think that when their are murders in the black community, other blacks don't become terrified and angry? Again, all crimes are equally bad but a race crime in America takes on more precedence and often gets national attention simply because we are a multi-racial society and if we are to endure as a diversified nation, racially motivated crimes must be treated the way this crime has been treated. Its that simple!

With the President of the United States interjecting himself into a story – why didn't have anything to say about the white kid set on fire by the two Blacks in Kansas City, – that is being deliberated obfuscated by the Mainstream Media (MSM), we now have actual proof that the 2012 election will be the most racial in American history. Ummm, the civil war was not started over racism or slavery, it was started over the southern states' desire to seced from the republic of the United States. Slavery was an issue only because of the economic impact to the south. Let us not forget that at the same time, there were Irish immigrants who were indentured servants in the north while this was going on. Every nationality has had its time of challenge as they made their mark in the U.S. Unfortunately, because of the obvious differences of skin tone between people of color and those who are 'caucasian', non-white races tend to face different and continuing challenges.

I highly doubt those two black kids didn't have to defend themselves in court and if you're arguing that the murder of Trayvon is right because blacks murder others; you're simply usually logical fallacies(ad hominem), instead of using evidence to conclude whether this was right or wrong. But I actually think that no one should be able to form an opinion quite yet because their is a lack of evidence and because of that this case should-at the very least-be investigated and that Mr. Zimmerman should have to plead his case to a prosecutor whether than getting acquitted from a police officer.

And I don't give a damn about Al Sharpton and Double J(don't even know who that is) looking like fools, they can make an ass out of themselves if they decide. I think the comparison is disgraceful. While race could DEFINITELY be a factor in the Trayvon case, it doesn't seem clear that Zimmerman shot him simply because he was a black man. Emmitt Till was brutally tortured and murdered because he was a black man that broke racial codes in the racist South. I think George Zimmerman is guilty of murder but the race baiting and fire fueling here is reckless and irresponsible.

First off this Zimmerman was apparantly assaulted by the boy then at which time being within his legal right to stand his ground to protect himself and the area he was protecting, used deadly force to overcome Martins force and failure to comply. Lets face it a 17 year old male regardless of race is no 10 year old. (1) more year and he could join the armed forces. These kids today are tuff and as you can see from gangs etc.. they are amongst these same ages. We need to stop placing the blame on RACE ! His alleged wounds are consistent with the eyewitness testimony that he (Zimmerman) was the aggressor. Add to that the fact that he was much larger than Martin, and Martin was unarmed.

much longer. Yeah 50 pounds over weight larger. Zimmerman was 5.9 and Martin was 6.2 and an active football player. And an eyewitness says that when he actually saw the two fighting zimmerman was on the ground. Police reports say that zimmerman's back was wet from being on the ground. Zimmerman yelled for help when the eyewitness John opened his door to see what was going on, not Martin.
And one cannot help but think how would Martin get enough leverage to inflict a gash on the BACK of zimmerman's head if he had not actually attacked him from behind.
And if Martin truly felt threatened he could have easily ran away as he was in shape, lighter, and taller than Zimmerman.

Paula – My guess is that Zimmerman continue to stalk this young man, even after the police told him to stand down. He had a clear agenda, and that was to be some neighborhood-watch hero. I believe he questioned him, brandished the gun and the young man felt his life was in jeopardy. I would of fought also. What leads me to believe Zimmerman was the aggressor is because he did get out of his vehicle, he did pursue this young man, he – moved the ground he was on (i.e. stand YOUR ground) to where the young man was (now stand HIS ground) – and the young man was killed. Then the question also becomes, why shoot to kill?

actually from the zimmerman's 911 calls Zimmerman couldn't catch Martin, as he was 5.9 and about 240, so about 40-60 pounds over weight. The 5 minutes after that is assumed that he managed to chase down a 17 year old football player and catch him.
Also from the same 911 call Martin was staring at Zimmerman, approached the car and ran.
Also try explaining the gash on the back of zimmerman's head and his wet clothes that are in the police report. Stop assuming and wait for facts and then step up for Zimmerman's arrest or innocence.
Innocent until proven guilty, at least I thought that was the way the law went.

Trayvon was suspended for 10 days for assaulting a bus driver. He was 17 and 6 ft. 2 inches football player (i.e., no shriking, youthful violet). Zimmerman had a broken nose, blood on the back of his head, and grass stains on the back of his shirt. Eyewitnesses at the scene saw Trayvon straddling Zimmerman on the ground, beating the life out of him.

We don't yet know all the facts. It is not clear whether Treyvon or Zimmerman was the victim or the perp. All those who are rushing in to declare Treyvon a victim are judmental at best, bigtoted at worst.

What eyewitnesses? The majority say they heard him cry out for help, whimper, then there was a shot. The 911 tapes show that Zimmerman chased him. Other eyewitnesss say the police fed them stories to tell the media, that Zimmerman was attacked. So anything saying Trayvon Martin was the aggresor is damn false. YOU are the idiot.

"So anything saying Trayvon Martin was the aggresor is damn false" – This raw, emotional assertion, made without knowing all the facts, is a textbook example of prejudgement. You are clearly not intrerested in the truth, an merely have an agenda.

If you don't want to be considered a criminal then don't look or act like one, consider how others view your actions.

Emmett Till was forced out of his house by 2 men form the South. They were angry that he whistled at a “so called” white woman. This child was beaten for 2 hours. They then cut out his tongue....People heard him crying inside a barn as two grown men beat him senseless. He then had his private parts cut off by these men. He was only "14 years old" The all so called white jury found the 2 men not guilty in less than a few hours. The 2 men laughed in court and knew they would never have their neighbours find them guilty. No it doesn't. White Hispanic is meant to differentiate between black Hispanic, Asian Hispanic, etc. that's because Hispanic is not a racial designation. It is a geographical designation. A person can be of any race and be Hispanic. Hispanic simply means that the person is an American who, either they themselves, or an ancestral relative, came from one of the Western Hemisphere countries that were originally colonized by Spain. So you can be blue eyed and blond haired and be Hispanic if you or an ancester came from any aforementioned country. I actually have 2 blond haired blue eyed Hispanic nephews that grew up in Puerto Rico with their Puerto Rican mother.

The biggest joke of this is to see so many in the AA community raging about being worried about their child's safety. No offense dipsh1ts but the majority of American Americans are murdered by African Americans. In fact, AA now make up over 52% of murderers.

Well considering how educated and well rounded you seem to believe you are why don't you look at the facts. Was Zimmerman looking at Trayvon's fb and said he's a criminal I must shoot him. Maybe you simply forgot what it was to be a teenager and follow trends and try to figure out what or who you want to be. Needless to say the point is the kid is dead and at the hands of a rent a cop nothing more nothing less. His school records don't show anything that is going to help or discredit him niether does his fb. Why don't we pull up Zimmermans past and judge him based on that interpretation.

Amen Scott – I was ready to try to defend Zimmerman (the real victim) but you said it all. Well spoken. There will be too many afraid to agree with the truth because it might sound or seem "racist" in a situation lie this. However, African Americans wouldn't have given a crap had this been a black on black or white on white incident. We all have the right to protect ourselves, family and property and that's what Zimmerman did.

Of course they're similar. In both cases, the justice system failed the victims (a jury failed to reach a verdict in the case of Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam and, even after they brazenly confessed to killing Till, could not be retried because of double jeopardy). In both cases, people of all races and walks of life were galvanized to fight injustice. In both cases, the nation was made aware of the lingering problem in our country of racism and prejudice. The comparison is not far-fetched at all. Zimmerman's action, while terrible on their own, were exacerbated by the failure of law enforcement to conduct a fair and thorough investigation of the killing. Whether or not Zimmerman is a racist, the conduct of Sanford, FL law enforcement certainly suggests inequalities in enforcement of the law.

Give it a rest. You don't know the facts of this case. Race hustlers have taken the story and run wild as they always do when the victim is black. Amazingly, you never hear a word from these same people concerning racism when it comes to the thousands of assualts & murders blacks commit against other races on an annual basis. Too bad Zimmerman doesn't have blonde hair and blue eyes. Then he'd have truly fit their racial agenda. What a disgrace!

Mostly caused those assaults are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Come on be realistic. If the race roles were reversed and it was a white kid shot by a black man, you know right now we would be talking about how soon the jury would be chosen and how many years he would receive when found guilty.

    Mr. Blake,

Shame on you for drawing comparisons between Mr. Till and Mr. Martin's deaths. Both are tragic occurrences...talented young men taken before their time with racial overtones involved. In the case of Mr. Till, it was clearly a civil rights crime and murder! In the case of Mr. Martin, the investigation is beginning and we have to let our justice system decide. I pray that the investigation proceeds much quicker than it has and that justice will prevail. In the meantime, back off, all of you street-corner barristers and want-to-be-hangmen. The Lord is righteous and will prevail!

Where’s the context? Forty-nine shot in Chicago St Patrick’s Day weekend in Chicago, five in Indianapolis … deafening silence. Or the white bicyclist tackled and beaten on Lakeshore last Summer by a wilding gang? No statement on that, Obama? Apparently all the billions you spent community organizing were squandered, misspent, wasted.

Does Obama recall the last time he shot his big mouth off, completely uninformed and instinctively assuming racism, when cops responding to a breaking and entering asked Harvard black militant professor Gates to identify himself?

So the narrative begins, “Poor misunderstood black youth racistly shot for wearing a hoodie while eating skittles…”

But there’s an eyewitness. Crap. Nothing spoils a good story like an eyewitness. And it turns out Trayvon is less of a sweetie-pie than the propaganda machinery painted. Will you have a beer summit with Zimmerman now, Obama?

It goes on and on. The media ignores, in fact, attempts to hide black crime against whites. Right now in the state of Florida a 16 yr old black youth Shawn Tyson) is on trial for murdering two white "tourists" for no apparent reason. Walking in a black neighborhood while white is the obvious reason. He claims he attempted to rob them but they had no money so he decided to shoot them. Yet, both had wallets, money and other valuables on their possesion when found dead. He shot them because they were white and walking lost through his neighborhood. No media outrage. No constant mention of race with comparisons to thousands of other white victims of racist punks all across the country. Let them make excuses for black crime and blame poverty. Any sensible person knows better. Immigrants came to this country strarving with nothing but the clothes on their back and did not behave the way these people have for decades. Just look at cities like Detroit, Philly, St. Louis, etc, etc. They tranformed all into crime ridden hell holes where decent people can't walk the streets without fear of being mugged or shot. Good people moved in droves to get away from them. Wake up to the facts America. Take one good look at the genocide that is going on in post aparthied South Africa if you want to see where your headed.

Trayvon Martin stood his ground against an aggressor who pursued and confronted him, he most likely
felt threatened and if in fact George Zimmerman's wounds were actual and not self inflicted it would make sense that Trayvon defended himself. The fact that some now claim that Trayvon was the aggressor because of George zimmerman's wounds, which are questionable at best, is ridiculous. If the stand your ground law applies, it was Trayvon's right and not George Zimmerman's.

70 plus degrees, dressed in a hoodie with the hood up = criminal. I see someone dressed like that, under those weather conditions, that is what comes to my mind, doesn't matter the skin color. If you don't want to be thought a criminal/ganster/hood/etc then don't dress like one. Stereotypes are not necessarilly a good thing, but they are a reality and they come about for a reason. A lot of criminals dress like that when committing a crime. So when "common" folk see someone dressed like that, "criminal" is the first thing to come to mind.

Seriously? Give me a break. I have a white 22 year old son and he has a collection of hoodies. A hoodie defines what type of person you are... Really? I swear simple minded people who are judgmental is what is really wrong with this world. A hoodie no more defines you than a black leather jacket makes you a biker. My Father is a pastor who rides a motorcycle and sports a black leather jacket, does that make him a Hells Angel? Hardly...

I think there is a valid point with the outfit though. Even though you can't be defined by what you wear, it does come into play. If I wore a cops uniform, people would think I was a cop. When I wear a black leather biker jacket (and, yes, I do have a Harley Davidson black leather jacket, but I don't ride a motorcycle), people think I ride a motorcycle. I don't fault them for it, I am, after all , wearing a bikers jacket. I never thought that a hoodie was a uniform for a punk, but now that I mull it over, most every video of a teenager holding up a gas station has a kid wearing a hoodie.

Trayvon was wearing a hoodie and IT WAS RAINING (why it was on his head). Why would wearing a hoodie make someone a criminal? I was watching the Today Show and saw a school of young WHITE kids with red hoodies on. Guess what, it was raining and some of them had their hoodies on their head. I work by George Washington University and see WHITE kids with hoodies on everyday (OMG I feel threatened!) Some of these statements that have been presented on this topic shows the number of ignorant racist pigs in this world. I feel sorry for this young man's family. What happened to him is pure racism. However, whether Zimmerman is found guilty or continue to be free, his life will never be the same. He will always after to look over his shoulder being in fear of his life.

Just so that you're properly informed.....

The girlfriend was on the phone with Trayvon when Zimmerman began following him. Initially, he did not have the 'hood' on. She told him to "run" and he said, "no, I'm going to put my hood on." And to add to a previous comment, hoodies are in.... I teach high school, and regardless of the tempature, students wear them religiously.

Had this been your child or relative, I'm sure your thought process would be completely different.

The only reason why Zimmerman has any injuries was because Trayvon Martin was defending himself and fighting for his life. We heard the tapes.. Zimmerman is the aggressor. He is the attacker. He is the murderer. He initiated the contact and pursued Trayvon ignoring the suggestion and warnings of the 911 operator again.. the aggressor. For what ever reason.. Zimmerman acted on his own accord and confronted a stranger, pursued him, followed him, accused him, then attacked him. Trayvon is the one doing the self defense. WHO HAD THE GUN!!! ZIMMERMAN!!!
