Undocumented Latina makes Time 100 list

By Alyse Shorland, CNN

(CNN) - This week Time Magazine released its 100 Most Influential People in the World list. Among the presidents, CEOs and entertainers was a 27-year-old activist and undocumented Latina, Dulce Matuz.

Matuz has become a public face of undocumented students. She organizes protests and has been arrested.  CNN.com profiled Matuz last year as part of its coverage leading up to the documentary "Don’t Fail Me: Education In America."

Matuz first spoke out as an undocumented student in 2010 in Arizona. In 2008, she founded the Arizona DREAM Act Coalition. As the founder and president, she brings together youth of all backgrounds to campaign on behalf of  an estimated 65,000 undocumented students who graduate from high school in the United States each year, according to the Urban Institute.

Matuz found out about a month ago that she would be a part of the Time 100 list, which is chosen by the magazine’s editors.  Actor and activist Eva Longoria penned a description of Matuz, writing that she “represents the finest of her generation.”

“It’s been overwhelming. I am happy and honored - but this recognition is not for me, but for all the undocumented students and youth that work with me,” Matuz said.

Right now, she’s working to rally the Latino vote in Arizona.

“There’s lot of responsibility,” Matuz said. “We have 300,000 unregistered Latino voters in Arizona, and we have to let them know that even though I cannot vote, I have a voice.”

Matuz said even though recognition has led to her undocumented status becoming well-known, she’s never been afraid of what might happen to her.

“My mom told me that fear is from the devil, so I am not afraid,” Matuz said. “I just can't think about it.”

In Time, she said, "We are Americans, and Americans don't give up."

I hate to break it to you, my dark skinned friend. It's not that the "illegal Mexicans that Illegal Mexicans make it worse for the rest of brown skin legal Latinos", its the color of your skin. If you think other wise, you're in fantasy land. African Americans, Asians, Native Americans ALL get the treatment from intolerant European descendants. The only way you will get past that is through education.

But why is she a Latina? The is a Native American Indian whose blood was here long before the White Spaniards landed in America. The fact that she speaks Spanish doesnt make her Latin at all. She is all, or mostly, Aztecs.

Sounds just like the 1960's all over again, when black people acted as if there was no shame in being black...

And BTW, civil rights protesters ignored laws then, too - like "separate but equal" and so forth. They ignored the rule of law because it was unjust then. Illegal aliens are protesting now because the immigration policy is also unjust. It may be the rule of law, but it isn't morally correct.

Why blame Obama? Bush let her stay first. Obama has deported more illegals than Bush did in two terms - and with fewer resources (since Congress cut the budget of Immigration enforcement).

The blame for the whole mess falls on Congress, and they have no possible motivation for trying to fix the problem - any realistic solution would cost them too many votes.

Have you noticed how the pro-illegal posters blatantly ignore reasonable points made against their case, and how the anti-illegal posters blatantly ignore reasonable points made against their case, too?

Basically, nobody seems at all interested in actually DISCUSSING the issue. They've all made up their minds, and anyone who disagrees with them is automatically stupid and worthless.

What I noticed is that all the anti-illegal posts show pure blind hate toward them. First there's the hate, then there are the reasons to justify it – "they using up our free healthcare," "they stealing our jobs," "they are criminals and I don't care what kind of people they are"

We know where the root of all your reasoning is – hate

I assume your last sentence was not directed at me, right? Or are you so blinded by hate, too, that you cannot even distinguish friend from foe?

The vast majority of posters here, on both sides, use inane arguments and ignore the real issues when convenient. Illegal immigration DOES create a burden on society. Anchor baby status DOES present a challenge. On the other hand, asking immigrants to do it the "legal" way shows absolute ignorance of the system, and kicking kids out because of the actions of their parents is anti-American, at best. What we need are people who actually want to reform the system, not people who see the whole issue as an opportunity to complain about political opponents.

Why do people that get "touched" by these stories never express their ultimate desire?

You want an open borders policy? You honestly believe this is possible?
Do you want to turn an eye to illegal immigration and only punish once in a while with an amnesty every 20 years?

I just want to understand why someone doesn't oppose illegal immigration. If you want open borders fine, but if you want cheap labor with an amnesty every couple of decades just to seem "humane" that is plainly evil

I want a policy that does not penalize children for the actions of their parents; one that allows truly successful immigrants to stay regardless of past violations of immigration code. I want a policy that, from the start, is enforceable and enforced. The policy we currently have is, well, none of those things. It is the law of the land, but it is morally unjust and pragmatically foolish.

      April 19, 2012 at 7:55 pm | Report abuse |
      • Chuy

But the penalization needs to include children at some point, I know that the "anchor baby" crap is thrown a lot, but that mentality does exists. If your don't enforce something like that, you are risking these kids as their parents see them as a way to break the law. The same way marriage was abused in the past
"truly successful" illegal immigrants should not exist if a law like yours should exist

        See? Discussion, it's good.
Angrily shouting at illegals makes you seem like a racist and talking with a bleeding heart makes you seem like an open borders hippie

Any law that penalizes children for the crimes of their parents is inherently evil. You may see a need for evil laws, but I am not convinced.

I suppose this is how anti-abortion people feel...

        April 19, 2012 at 8:12 pm | Report abuse |
      • Chuy

Almost all laws that penalize parents indirectly affect children, some in really brutal ways, but that's the way life is. I don't really see your reasoning. Unless you really believe that sending kids to countries like Mexico (where they are automatically citizens) is a monstrous thing to do, like many ignorant Americans with no real connection to Mexico seem to believe.

I'm not saying that a kid that was born here and has been here 18 years needs to be deported. But you need to draw a line at some point, otherwise, you are just going to invite abuse

        April 19, 2012 at 8:20 pm | Report abuse |
      • Edwin

Chuy: I thought that was exactly what you advocated. After all, our law is clear: if the child is not a citizen, it is illegal regardless of the fact that he/she grew up their entire life in this country. Some children are deported to countries where they have no relatives; some do not speak the language of that country at all. Defending legal actions like these is not morally right.

In my opinion, any child that grew up the majority of their life in the United States and graduates college should be automatically eligible for citizenship.

Ok, so you agree there should be a line. I don't like something like "half of their lifes", probably if they are a minor with parents, then there should be no question to deport the family altogether.
Yes, they might not speak the language, don't have relatives or friends, it was probably the same way when they entered America. And I guess it wasn't THAT bad, otherwise, you should put your parents in jail just for doing this nasty thing about bringing a minor to a country he doesn't know

Someone like Dulce has no real stands for me, she was 15 when she illegally entered the country, basically an adult.

Honestly, if you want to talk about wealth, consider how much of the U.S. wealth is at the expense of people in the rest of the world. 100 billion is a pittance compared to the resources our corporations steal from the rest of the world.

I'm not arguing anything particular here, just pointing out that you probably shouldn't equate monetary value with morality, because the U.S. is not really the good guy in that regard.

How about standing up for the right for people to LEGITIMATELY come to this country. For those who risk everything, including their savings, to make it here legally. I'm glad she's standing up for something in the spirit of our country, but you can't be against the death penalty if you're already on death row.

The problem is that, if people came here legally, they wouldn't be profitable for Americans.
They come to America because Americans can abuse them, if they had to come legally, it would be better to hire Americans that don't need any sort of relocation. Contrary to popular belief, there are enough Americans to take their same jobs
Illegal immigration is not an act of love to America, is a sign of desperation at injustices in their own countries. Injustices that get perpetuated forever as they control the social problems that would had erupted if no money from the exterior was received in Latin America

My grandfather was not born in this country but believed in the Idea of the American dream and instilled that idea in all of us who came after him. I applaud her for her work and think she would make a great citizen, just not over others just as qualified who's parents did not decide to commit a crime. There are plenty of young people in the world who would love to live her and be a citizen, but just aren't lucky enough to share a border and have criminal parents. I know many U.S. citizens with Latina heritage and date an American with Latina heritage and they don't like that people like this are trying to break the law while their families worked within the law whether fair or not to come to this country..

I hope she can change how hard it is to bring as many qualified young foreign citizens from ALL foreign countries into the U.S. to become residents and cut through the red tape...but until then she is nothing more than someone only looking out for her best interests and those of only HER culture that share a border with us.

I am tired of paying high taxes to so these people can get free medical, welfare, etc. We have to work our asses off the provide for our families and get benefits but yet when illegal aliens go to hospital to have more kids they don't pay one single penny.

I'm chocked on how ignorant you are Mr Frustrated. Most if not all illegal emigrants pay worker's taxes on their illegal jobs. They pay taxes every time they buy or use things... Now, your white babysitter that you pay under the table to avoid taxes liabilities on your side (and hers), that is frustrating.... Bigot people ( does not matter color) being ignorant about real global life challenges and knowing just your little small town in the woods problems and sparking movements that eventually will become ignorant militia... THAT IS A PROBLEM....
Enough talking... it is probably dinner time for you... So go ahead and have it... Go to your favorite restaurant and ask for your favorite food... It's probably a Mexican restaurant and and your favorite dish is a Beef Fajita.... enjoy!!!!!

Funny how people "pick and choose" how we should be more like Europe. "they are more enlightened" / "Universal Healthcare" / etc. etc.

Yet no European country has as lax immigration laws as we do. They all kick out illegals when found and do not tolerate it.

Have you ever been to Europe?? You can literally drive from one country to the next, no check points. I feel like they have way more illegal immigrants than we do! But wait, they have white skin..... guess that means they are okay right? This country makes it a much bigger issue and than any European country I have ever been to (which is about 12). I honestly feel it is more so because we live in a country still divide by race.

They would NOT allow you to stay there, work, and live without following the proper order to become a citizen. Therefore, why should America be any different. We don't make rules for them to just be broken and then thrown in our face. Educate yourself before you speak, you sound like a real ignorant soul.

I would put money on it that she was BROUGHT to this country-purhaps her family is the one who broke the law...she had not choice in the matter. God Bless her for taking a stand and advocating for others in similar situations! That takes some guts! Especially fully knowing that all you ignorant people will bash her-which you are doing. She deserves it more than most on that list who grew up with money, while she started off with nothing, NO OPPORTUNITIES. I wish you all would put yourself in her situation. The things you normally take for granted. For example, she does not have a drivers license, she can never buy a house, and most importantly- she can't get a REAL job despite the higher education she has earned. How many LEGALS in this country even bother to go to college? How many young people sit around and watch reality TV shows? I served in Iraq and risked my life for this country-this country which is wonderful and is supposed to offer opportunities which all of you take for granted on a daily basis. This country is suppose to provide opportunities for people to better themselves-THEE AMERICAN DREAM, just like this young lady is doing. You all should be ashamed of yourselves. No wonder most of the world laughs at this country and the people in it. I'm disgusted of you all who posted negative comments on here. Maybe someone should kick you out of this country which you called home for most of your life and throw YOU in Mexico, because ultimately, that is what you are saying to do to this young lady. You really don't get that it hurts the country in the long term do you? The economy is run by numbers. If Washington doesn't have correct tallies come census time, mistakes can be made in resource planning, job allocations, not to mention it makes them exponentially harder to answer for crimes committed and or legal actions being needed to be taken, even as far as tax enforcement and the like. There's plenty more reasons but I'm sure you don't want to read a 9 page dissertation. I will leave it at this. Do not let the fact that you have a good heart cloud judgement as in this case it comes at the expense of your fellow countrymen and tax payers. Illegal is still illegal and no amount of good manners and paying taxes should make anyone exempt from established laws. If that's the case then maybe you will look the other way as I steal your car. I did contribute to charities and work very hard last year afterall. Get my point?

  57. AZAMERICAN

This story is disgusting, TIME Magazine should be ashamed of themselves for "REWARDING" bad behavior. Part of the problem today is that "BAD BEHAVIOR" is rewarded and over looked. The big picture is that we have an ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT on national TV promoting that she is 27 years old, gone to our schools, been treated by our doctors, never paid taxes but is benefiting from all of the advantages of being a US citizen. This is the reason for our high cost health insurance, high cost schooling, and why our country is in such debt. Our tax dollars are being spent on people who DO NOT BELONG HERE! We, as TRUE AMERICANS, could not go to ANY other country without our passports and/or have a work visa- which isn't easy to do, by the way... Our country should be embarrassed that this is public knowledge and should become PRO ACTIVE in this situation. This should be a HUGE RED FLAG that we have a serious problem. We should be taking care of US CITIZENS instead of ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. Also, Eva Longoria is an activist and promoted this young girls Dream Act as if it is a good thing... I am sorry, Eva, how about you pay to keep the immigrants here then...

Very orginal LOL calling AZ- "nAZI" The law of the land is that you CANNOT live in this country without obtaining citizen. Therefore, anyone who doesn't have a work visa, school visa, and/or citizenship should be deported back to their rightful country. Trust me, you would be deported back to the US or thrown in Prison if you pulled this crap in another country.
As far as taxes go- if you are NOT a citizen you are not paying Federal and State Taxes. Illegals do not have social security numbers and therefore are not traceable.

For them, I welcome them to this country with open arms, and wish them nothing but the best in pursuing the American dream. When one disrespects the laws of this country that have been in place for so many years, you disrespect what this country stands for, and I for one believe that it shouldn't be tolerated.

You fund it because it provides all of the services most normal people wouldn't normally pay for out of their own pocket, such as: roads, education, emergency services (police, fire dept, ems, etc.), national defense, etc. etc. etc. If you haven't figured that one out, you have a lot to learn. Unless you want to live in a really disfunctionaly country, like those where communities to pay for private militias, or pay criminal gangs, and have about zero public services, then ok, let's not contribute.

If you were a toddler when you got here, and grew up here, and are American in every sense of the word except for your lack of papers, then what...go to a country where you are a foreigner? Nice try George, the fact is that you know nothing about me, and what we know about her is that she is in this country illegally. If I get caught speeding I expect to get in trouble, and I have. What I don't do, is intentionally go 100 mph in front of police and expect not to get in trouble. Which is essentially what she is doing, flaunting her illegal status with out the fear of consequences.

For all of those that are criticizing her for breaking the law and being here illegally.
I agree with you 100%, but we tend to overlook entertainers (especially in professional sports) for breaking the law. May it be substance abuse, or otherwise.
Do you also focus on the fact that MLK was in prison? Or Nelson Mendala or Ghandi?

What she has done is very American and very admirable. I think you can overlook the fact that she's here illegally.

Not me, I think that all those MLB players that were hopped up on steroids should at the very least have all of their records stripped. You can't even compare Ghandi, MLK, or Mandela to her, they fought for rights of people that were being oppressed and in some cases saving the from acts of genocide. She is fighting to have millions of illegal immigrants become legal because they just simply ran across a border.

Oh, please! What she's done is not very "American". Why should we glorify those who are here illegally, change languages and culture for them, while others who may want to come here LEGALLY have no such luck. This shouldn't even be something to be argued about. Let them come here legally...and that includes learning AMERICAN culture (yes, we used to have our own culture, still do, although it seems to be going by the wayside).

Tom is right. Xenophobes are up in arms, solely because of their personal, hidden biases against Dulse. A star performer at school and community, Dulse is the perfect example of young bright people we desperately need more of. Argumentation of her immigration law offenses detracts from the fact that the government is inherently incompetent on conducting its immigration policy (9/11 hijacker visas, hello?). Immigration law should be applied in a smart and rational way. Wall Street bankers broke laws with impunity and got away with Robbery of the Century, to a detriment to all of us. Where's the righteous anger?

Besides, deep down, most of the r4cist posters here (and their posts clearly speak for themselves) are opposed to sensible immigration reform on the grounds of applicability of law, none of their immigrating kin were ever subject to. I think I would rather do a reform where we exchange each backward, reactionary, backwater low effort thinker for a couple of young people like Dulse.

I feel for her because I dont think she was the cause of the situation she finds herself in. No one should advocate breaking the law. We should be looking to make new laws or get old laws thrown out. There's no "more" or "Less" american. you're either a legal American citizen or your not. You're saying "go back to Europe" as if to imply that he's white, and she's originally from North America, so she's more American. If he was born here, or better yet, if he was born in IRAN, and got in line and came here through the proper legal way, then he is American.

I applaud her service and I encourage her to do the right thing. If you steal a car and use it to deliver Meals on Wheels, you can't cite your volunteer work as the reason we should just let you off the hook, and even KEEP the car!

You take the car BACK, you apologize, and you face the music for the bad you did. Then, we'll all applaud the good you did.

We're a nation of laws. That separates civilized societies from chaos. That means we all agree on laws, then we honor (and enforce) them when the time comes. We don't re-evaluate the law every time it is to be applied, or it's no law. If you don't like the current law, then start a movement to change the law to what you apparently want: open borders. There is no such thing as a citizen. Anyone who wants to come and stay here is automatically a citizen. Sell that to the majority of us, and we'll make that the law, just as we made the current law the way it is.

Until then, she's undeniably breaking a law. A law you don't LIKE, but it's still the law of the land.

Sorry, If she was brought to the US as a child, then she will get a good education when she is deported back to her country of citizenship. None of the current occupants of this country, except Native Americans, are here "legally", in an honest and straight forward way. Anglo-Sacs came from Europe and forcefully brought Africans as slaves. These are the facts. None of the first or early immigrants were subjects to any immigration laws, period. These are new laws, springing up as late as in the 1920's. Now America treats its immigrants very differently. I say it as someone who went through the immigration system, from visa to green card to most recently American citizen. The system failed, there is not even a way for these people to legalize. All that's being asked is a reasonable alternative to a visa and taxpayer status. We will need plenty of those once the boomers retire...

Maybe because she, unlike the vast majority of Americans of her generation, is actually trying to change the world for the better. Removing one of the few people who actually work to make a difference weakens our future.

sorry. im actually half jamaican (my father came here legally). i was trying to make a point. does that make me the victim or the success story now? regardless.. im a college graduate who makes $41 k a year working 50-60 hour weeks. i pay my taxes, pay my rent, pay my bills, obey the law, and donate to charities and i dont see too much of my taxes serving my health housing or food needs, nor should it as i can support my self. I AM THE AVERAGE AMERICAN CITIZEN!. im no victim but i believe i deserve that spot more than a criminal.

She needs to go back to the country that she belongs to. Time putting her on the list is wrong to do so. I came to this country from Afghanistan the right way, waited in line.

I'm not sure what you europeans and middle easteners are doing here; you should go back to where you came from. This land belongs to the natives, including her.

Hey Wad we won california and much of the south west when we destroyed mexico in the mexican american war. we had the right to take all of mexico north of mexico city, but we decided to be magnanimous, and only take what was north of the rio grand river. we also PAID mexico for the land, which was not needed, and had never been done by a conquering nation. so, the next time some retard tells you that america stole california from mexico, you can tell them how stupid and ignorant they are JUST LIKE YOU!

sorry rufus! it has been proven that europeans were here 14,000 years ago, but due to the pressure from the red man, any skeletal remains found that is old they rush to the scene and bury it quickly due to the fact they carbon dated one that said it was caucasion and was one of the oldest found, and found in florida. they are nervous about this as if it is true, no more bingo and no more free rides. they will have to get to work! nice try, why dont you go back and take a few with you! haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

you clearly have no idea what the rest of us are debating here. do you know her blood line? are you the founder of geneology . com? is she a native? are you? and, after a comment like that, if your blood line does not 100% go back to a native tribe please keep your bleeding heart liberal mouth closed while us educated adults discuss the topic.

Natives, like one of the Indian tribes? Most people south of the Rio Grande are of Aztec, Incan, Mayan lineage, so, I unless she's from one of tribes indigenous to the United States, she's not a native either.

Welcome to America friend, glad to have you. Join the rest of us in hatin' the law breakers. Maybe you'd of been better off immigrating to a country that actually enforces the laws across the board though. Seems us Americans have our collective heads up ourazzez.

Good post. 100% agree. Laws are laws, she should not be able to pick and choose which ones she likes.

Tyurone: she arrived here before she was old enough to legally choose to come or not come. She grew up here.

Suppose you found out that Congress revoked YOUR citizenship status, for no reason related to you. Would you cheerfully move "back" to a country you had never known? It's basically the same thing.

Shaw: she DOES belong to this country, because she grew up here. Legal issues aside, this IS her home country.
