Study: Mexican immigration to United States slows to standstill

(CNN) - Net Mexican immigration to the United States has slowed to a standstill, according to a report released Monday.
The number of immigrants coming from Mexico to the United States has steeply declined while the number of Mexicans leaving the United States has increased sharply, the Pew Hispanic Center said.
"These developments represent a notable reversal of the historic pattern of Mexican immigration to the U.S., which has risen dramatically over the past four decades," the center's report says.
Many factors are probably behind the trend, the report said, including rising deportations, greater enforcement at the border, growing dangers associated with border crossings, the weakened U.S. job market and a long-term decline in Mexico's birth rates.
The 1.37 million Mexican immigrants who came to the United States between 2005 and 2010 was about half the number who immigrated during previous five-year periods, according to the analysis, which was based on national population surveys in the United States and Mexico.
Meanwhile, from 2005 to 2010, 1.39 million Mexicans and their families left the U.S. to return to Mexico, the report says. That's more than double the number of people who did it during a five-year period the decade before, the report says.
The report also notes, citing figures from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, that the number of Mexicans apprehended trying to cross the border illegally has plummeted in recent years, from more than 1 million in 2005 to 286,000 in 2011.
While analysts said for years that immigration from Mexico to the United States was dwindling, the Pew report says 2010 Mexican census data offer some of the first "hard evidence that flows back to Mexico had grown over the same period."

I have a hard time believing these numbers... here in the Pacific Northwest there are Mexicans popping up everywhere, to the point that entire sides of town are almost completely Hispanic now! Even some of our oldest, most classic restaurants to eat a good ol' American burger are now fully staffed with Hispanics... not even one white guy! I commend Mexicans for their hard work, because they are definitely hard workers and willing to work for less. But we have to curb this influx because it isn't helping our already sad economy and financial woes. I would never expect to waltz into a country like Russia illegally and get anything other than jailed or booted out of the country (if I was lucky), much less secure a job and then drive a nicer car than half the Russian's around me. I am not racist and accept all people of all nationalities... but in these dire times, can't we draw some thicker lines?

When we were in the the hospital in Phoenix having our first child we were told by the nurses there we were the best couple in the maternity ward, because we were #1 married and #2 spoke English and it was nice seeing that once in a while. As we were leaving with our purchased brand new baby carrier we noticed a Mexican non-English speaking couple also leaving with a couple of young children. A nurse was handing them a brand new carrier to take their infant home because the one they had was apparently not adequate. My husband and I looked at each other and wondered where our FREE brand new carrier was. So tell me, how is that fair?

It will be very interesting to see the economic implications of this exodus. First the low and middle end housing market will suffer by how much? We don't know. Second, what is going to happen to car sales, especially the used car sales market? Mexicans can't bring their American cars back home. Third, there are reports from many farmers feeling the pain when they can't find any workers willing to harvest their fields... especially at current wages. These people consume goods and services... I never saw an illegal who didn't have a cellular phone. If less illegals try to cross our border and many of them are leaving the US then we won't need more border patrol or ICE or DHS or police officers... as a matter of fact we could save a lot of money cutting these positions and spending less in equipment (helicopter, truck etc)

Well, a few years ago here in Los Angeles, the illegals wanted to teach "us" (whites) a lesson and show us how much we depend on them and how much we would miss them. They held a strike. They didn't go to work. They stayed off the roads. They sure showed us! No lines at the markets, went right through; no lines at the restaurants, went right through, and worst of all, no traffic on the freeways! It was beautiful. Boy, they sure showed us. And they haven't done that since, now they converge on City Hall and disrupt traffic. Very law abiding citizens.

i read an article a while ago, pretty recent , that implied that the border patrol was letting people cross and wasnt going to be part of the census, i think the article stated that orders came from there higher ups to let some of them cross the border. pretty sure I read it here on cnn, also had interviews with a few border patrol officers. My parents immigrated here legally back in the day. I read an article that said whales were actually people in giant costumes. I read that the Obama administration was intentionally letting whales into our borders without being checked for identification. These whales then swim in our national waters and beach themselves waiting for other people to give them handouts or to come to their aid. I would like to say I have never heard such hateful, and ignorant posts in my life but I can't. What I will say is these hateful and ignorant posts do nothing to push forward any debate about illegal immigration, nor does it get to the real problems in this country today. Things like wealth disparity, joblessness, homelessness. All it does is show how hateful people can be when they get emotional about a subject no matter how much they don't really know about it. I am a grandson of illegal immigrants, but I am proud to say my family has given way more to this country than we have taken. I have had Uncles (Yeah I said uncles) who served in WWII both in the European and Pacific theaters, I have had more cousins than I can count who have served in defending this country in the Army, Navy, and of course the Marine Corps to include a Cousin who gave his life for his country, and we continue to defend this country. I serve almost 24 years myself, and as I retired am glad to know a 3rd cousin is carrying the torch for our family. So when you say these hateful and superficial things think about who you say it about. Or at least think. Thank you for you time.

They do pay taxes, ESPECIALLY in California where employees are more hesitant to hire illegals without doing the bare minimum (asking for a SSN). Now, granted, they pay taxes to fake/stolen SSNs, but they do pay taxes, and because the SSNs don't belong to them, they can't claim tax returns. In essence, they tend to overpay taxes, which is the exact opposite of what you're claiming.
Actually, if you think about it, they are working under false names and SS #'s. This means they are not filing a tax return in which they will, more than likely, get a refund because they are paid low wages so the result is a benifit to taxpayers. Unclaimed money. Think people – please.

Mexicans like the rest of the America's are no longer heading to the U.S for a better life. The United States of America is a thing of the past. Brazil is the new Crown Jewel of The Americas. Just like the British invented soccer, Brazil took it, perfected it, & eventually became the best at it. Now their doing the very same thing with democracy, & in due time, you'd be naive to believe that Brazil isn't the biggest threat to the U.S, when it comes to offering a better quality of life to a market with potential as vast as Latin America.
Although Brazil is a beautiful place with warm people, it is not the "new Crown Jewel of The Americas". I have ten years of experience there and wherever I go I hear the same thing: "Ninguém quer trabalhar!' (No one wants to work); there are simply too many government sponsored handouts. In addition, the public education system of the country is almost criminal. This means that Brazil is not producing enough talented workers to support manufacturing or research and development, nor does it have many people in the pipeline. Similarly, corruption and crime is rampant. The judicial system is byzantine, at best. Call me naive, as you wish, but I believe you need to get off Ipanema beach and see the real Brazil... the one that is broken.
When almost all Americans can get a job with a livable wage, then we can talk about depopulation issues. Until then, we need to force employers to hire Americans. It should be noted that the Obama Administration has told Ice to effectively stop enforcement. If an illegal alien is observed trying to cross the border they are not to be apprehended once they step onto US soil. That is the ruling judgement from Eric Holder and the justice department. This is the TRUE reason why the number of arrests has plummetted.
They have also taken a policy of not apprehending illegals that are already within the United States. If one is suspected of being an illegal immigrant because they can't speak English, or produce proper identification (that all of us citizens must do), than you can't deport them. This is all of course a prelude to MASSIVE LEGALIZATION at your tax dollar expense in Obama's second term.
But wait this is Republican propoganda right? Mass legalization will in fact make everything all better. No more illegals undercutting jobs that Americans used to do (construction, factories, etc.). In fact there are PLENTY of jobs, just 40+ million lazy Americans that won't search for work right? Here's a funny story. My grandparents came here to work (they were illegal.) I'm a hispanic citizen that owns two businesses that combined employ over 50 american citizens (white, hispanic, black etc...). We also spend over $800,000 on contractors who also employ american citizens. Those 50 american citizens with a job can thank my illegal grandparents. I know a lot of people like me who's parents or grandparents were illegal who now create jobs for citizens. No, this study is over all immigration. The census covers all people living here legally and illegally. That's actually part of the point of the census is to count and give general data for populations that would otherwise fall between the cracks of normal government accounting.
