Study: Mexican immigration to United States slows to standstill

By the CNN Wire Staff

(CNN) - Net Mexican immigration to the United States has slowed to a standstill, according to a report released Monday.

The number of immigrants coming from Mexico to the United States has steeply declined while the number of Mexicans leaving the United States has increased sharply, the Pew Hispanic Center said.

"These developments represent a notable reversal of the historic pattern of Mexican immigration to the U.S., which has risen dramatically over the past four decades," the center's report says.

Many factors are probably behind the trend, the report said, including rising deportations, greater enforcement at the border, growing dangers associated with border crossings, the weakened U.S. job market and a long-term decline in Mexico's birth rates.

The 1.37 million Mexican immigrants who came to the United States between 2005 and 2010 was about half the number who immigrated during previous five-year periods, according to the analysis, which was based on national population surveys in the United States and Mexico.

Meanwhile, from 2005 to 2010, 1.39 million Mexicans and their families left the U.S. to return to Mexico, the report says. That's more than double the number of people who did it during a five-year period the decade before, the report says.

The report also notes, citing figures from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, that the number of Mexicans apprehended trying to cross the border illegally has plummeted in recent years, from more than 1 million in 2005 to 286,000 in 2011.

While analysts said for years that immigration from Mexico to the United States was dwindling, the Pew report says 2010 Mexican census data offer some of the first "hard evidence that flows back to Mexico had grown over the same period."

Wow, so much for all the good and welcoming Americans. I have seen the most vile, disrespectful, and illogical and inaccurate posts on this article. Presumably, the ones posting these comments are the "real Americans." You guys are the "us" and the Mexicans are the "them." First, it was the blacks, then the Irish, then the Jews. It's the Mexicans' turn now. You like to use racial slurs, and shout, "Get out!" You may want to consider looking at yourselves before being so hateful.

First of all, you're mostly uneducated. I would like to know the percentage of you saying these things have a formal education past high school. Secondly, you're obese. That's right America! A bunch of lard asses. Two thirds of Americans are either overweight or obese. Go figure. Americans are some of the most gluttonous, yet wasteful people on this planet. I see you eating your triple baconaters and slurping super size sodas. You're disgusting The divorce rate still stands around 50%. We still support an outdated second amendment, and our deaths by handguns rate are the highest in the world.

I don't need to feel superior to the gun-toting masses. While there are many people out there who hunt because they need the food, or because it's part of their culture. There is a large group who are either driven by unreasoned fear, or simple Freudian envy who need to buy some means of threatening others so that they don't have to realize how inferior they actually are.

Just as FYI, most of those immigrants are NOT mexicans. Most of them come from South America and Central America. Not everyone in Mexico wants to leave and come to the USA to be treated as a slave. Mexicans have a gorgeous country that, by the way, is LOVED by the americans, if not, just check to see how many americans enjoy Cancun every year!! Just saying, don't profile people just like that. 🙂

Mexicans going home shows how bad of shape we are in. In 2007/2008 I had 27 employees and a 7.1 mil. annual gross. After 3-1/2 years of fighting to stay solvent I meet with my bancruptcy attorney today at 2:00 Pm. This economy is definitley not sunny all over. It is very compartmentalized and my business has been (commecial construction) has been one of the worst. You can vote for whom ever you want but it will not make a difference. The class war is over and the very, very wealthy have won. Now it is just about the culture war.

You might want to check your facts hun. The economic downward spiral started before Obama was even elected (Google economic status in the last four Bush years). The financial bailout occurred in 2008 (Obama took office January 16, 2009). The housing bubble burst in late 2007 to mid 2008 (again, months before Obama took office). Obama bailed out the auto industry (except Ford). Millions, yes millions of jobs depend on the auto industry. I'm not an Obama supporter, but that was actually a good call. Think about it, if we let the auto industry fail, consider what industries feed the automakers: steel, plastic, electronics, rubber.

I realize that Obama is black and that is something that the GOP finds repulsive and disgusting, but the fact is he really hasn't brought the country to the brink of disaster. Not even close. A sitting president is only as powerful as the majority of Congress will allow. And since the GOP has held a majority vote in Congress for most of Obama's tenure, his hands have been tied in most instances.

The Right calls him a socialist because he wants universal healthcare for Americans who can't afford healthcare? What a travisty. Speaking as an American who was injured while visiting a foreign nation and being provided universal healthcare from that country, I cannot say the same system would work in America. I was actually "cared" for. I'm just a co-pay here. Oh yeah, and by the by...you tax dollars don't pay for it, the poor folks do. All it is doing is expanding "group benefits," the same thing your current employer does for you and your fellow employees. If your company expanded the workforce, your premiums would go down.

It would be nice if people could use "factual" and "intelligent" information to back up their hate speech.

Whatever you do, don't portray this as any kind of positive for the Obama administration's impact on immigration. I mean, we all know that the unskilled labor that attracted many of these immigrants is now being staffed by college graduates, or that the jobs have all been automated. The next time you're in southern California, stop by and thank one of the robots toiling in the fields on a hot day. (sarc)

Jobs being outsourced overseas and the unskilled labor positions that have historically attracted illegal immigrants are not the same. There will NEVER be a shortage of unskilled labor jobs here. You make a good point that a rational person would have to acknowledge here and give the Obama administration its due credit – the stakes for seeking out those jobs is becoming more prohibitive.

Adding or subtracting a few hispanics coming and going, this is all about the dems having the blacks and the republicans having the hispanics. In their game of political one upsmanship in which nobody wins, that's called success.

Check your history. The Aztecs were never in the U.S., nor did the "Mexicans" do anything with the U.S. The northern natives would send raiding parties into the U.S. to harass the Apaches and the Pueblo indians, slaughtering, taking slaves and livestock, back into the area of Mexico. "Mexico" NEVER established any village, or town in the "U.S." until the Spaniards got here and then, the Spaniards enslaved the natiive "mexicans" and used them to build the towns that were established in the 1600's in NM, AZ, and CA. Spain then gave the land to the Mexican government, that they set up, and Mexico had control of the Southwest for 35 years, before being paid $15 Million for it after they lost the war. During that 35 years, Mexico, STILL, never established any villages, camps or towns; they just continued what Spain had already set up. Mexico no more "owns" the southwest than any other group does. It's a case of who conquers and who holds. In this case, the U.S. conquered and held the area. And that is not racist. It's the facts.

The fiscal impact of inviting well-educated, hard-working immigrants and dis-enfranchising uneducated, non-voting, citizens would probably be extremely positive. We have a service-oriented economy that cannot be staffed by the large segment of our population that never goes beyond high school. In addition, the large number of unskilled immigrants who are willing to do the manual labor required to support the rest of us keep our overall standard of living up. Few citizens are really willing to do that sort of work for minimum wage (a non-living wage in many areas).

There is no more Ellis Island and the vast majority of people who immigrated to America through Ellis Island would be unqualified to do so today. Many Mexicans risk death in the journey to get to America, risk jail by staying here illegally, and do jobs that no one else wants to do, contributing a net positive to the economy. Yet people so many Americans scorn them in displays of thinly veiled racism.
Various immigrant waves have always been met with hostility by those who were already here, have (almost) always been generally accepted eventually, and have always added to this country as a whole. Mexicans are and will be no different, legal or not.

Those not running drugs are leaving due to the lack of under-the-table jobs.

I've actually called the I.C.E. to report an illegal immigrant I know and they don't do anything about it. NOTHING!

Diversity percentages in hiring don't hurt them either – if they apply, they usually are hired, no matter how long they usually stay or what their skills are. That benefits the ones that actually stick around and learn – but many others just ride out the 'easy' first 2 weeks or 30 days and then when the real work starts they are on to the next orientation somewhere else.

An absolutely valid point, but one that does not point that negates the problem. Syria, North Korea, Kenya, Iran, and many other countries are so terribly places to live but the bottom line is the United States simply does not have the resources to offer all of the people who would like to flee their countries. If we had wide open borders we would be overwhelmed in a matter of weeks. Every nation on Earth has a right to manage their borders, and 99% do without the scrutiny we get. Make no mistake, if millions of Spaniards fled into France each year France would do what it had to do to stop it. That we cannot support the burden of those illegally entering this country and that Mexicans are fleeing a bad situation are, and should be treated as, two entirely separate situations.

Let them all leave then America can find out how much goods and services Really cost. Farmers have already realized what Draconian immigration legislation can do as their crops rot in the fields as U.S. citizens will not do the work. So when we as a country find drastically rising costs of food, construction and other services then maybe before it's to late we will wake up. Be careful what you wish for you just might get something you never ever dreamed of in return.

    April 24, 2012 at 10:54 am | Report abuse |

The reason farmers watch their crops with has more to do than that. One, they keep wanting to pay ridiculously low wages for hard manual labor. Have you seen how much a construction worker gets paid? Many crop workers work longer hours during season, but they get nowhere near that amount. *Not saying they should get THAT much, just saying the difference is rather startling* Yes, food prices would go up. But if everyone was paying a wage that was livable, then no one would really care if food went up. Wages have not kept up with the raising prices of basic goods as it is, and that has as much to do with stingy 'job creators' as it does with govt interference.

I live and Mexico, and it's not like it's painted in the news. Yeah there is violence but you don't see it everywhere. It's like in the United States, it's concentrated in certain areas. With corruption, I'll pay ten dollars to a street cop to get out of a 500 peso fine. Corruption is a balance, some of it is good and some bad, but you can't have one without having the other. The last thing is that most of the people I know have a decent job. I do see poverty everywhere, but it's not like everyone is poor and trying to go to the United States. It's only the truely poor and uneducated anplus the ones with bad intentions that go to 'el norte'. They are the ones that give Mexico a bad name.

Let's look at perspective, for a minute....

30,000 deaths in 7 years. Not in Iraq or Afghanistan, but Juarez Mexico. ONE CITY. Name a city in the US that has that record....Please. Pretty please. Ignorant moron.

I find it funny how quick you people are to chastise others who have different perspectives than your own.

Yeah, I mentioned that corruption is partly to blame. Obviously if American policemen and politicians were as corrupt, I'm sure a city like Baltimore would be the same way.

You know... It is possible for you to state your opinion and have a dialogue with others without being rude. As soon as you insult someone, any credible statement you may have made is immediately voided.

I don't believe most of the claims by people here. Whether you live in Mexico or not is not really important. THE FACT is that Mexico is a great country, and the people are good people. If Mexico were richer than the US, Americans would be going to Mexico illegally. It has been that way since man first walked on the planet. The Euros illegally invaded North America looking for a better life.

Talking about deportations and the SCOTUS hearing the Arizona case, I wouldn't at all be surprised if the one who gets deported from her present job afterwards in the next election is ol' Jan! And it couldn't happen to a nicer person and not any too soon!

I had a conversation with a LEGAL Mexican, a really nice guy. He said he was going back to Mexico, and then come back illegally since he could make more money and have nothing taken out of his paycheck.
He and others have set up "safe houses" where they can live.
This story only counts LEGAL Mexicans.

Puhleeze. CNN obviously hasn't been to manassas park, va. if they think illegals are going home. More MSM propaganda to make you think the problem isn't as bad as it is. We aren't believing it for ONE second.
