Study: Mexican immigration to United States slows to standstill

By the CNN Wire Staff

(CNN) - Net Mexican immigration to the United States has slowed to a standstill, according to a report released Monday.

The number of immigrants coming from Mexico to the United States has steeply declined while the number of Mexicans leaving the United States has increased sharply, the Pew Hispanic Center said.

"These developments represent a notable reversal of the historic pattern of Mexican immigration to the U.S., which has risen dramatically over the past four decades," the center's report says.

Many factors are probably behind the trend, the report said, including rising deportations, greater enforcement at the border, growing dangers associated with border crossings, the weakened U.S. job market and a long-term decline in Mexico's birth rates.

The 1.37 million Mexican immigrants who came to the United States between 2005 and 2010 was about half the number who immigrated during previous five-year periods, according to the analysis, which was based on national population surveys in the United States and Mexico.

Meanwhile, from 2005 to 2010, 1.39 million Mexicans and their families left the U.S. to return to Mexico, the report says. That's more than double the number of people who did it during a five-year period the decade before, the report says.

The report also notes, citing figures from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, that the number of Mexicans apprehended trying to cross the border illegally has plummeted in recent years, from more than 1 million in 2005 to 286,000 in 2011.

While analysts said for years that immigration from Mexico to the United States was dwindling, the Pew report says 2010 Mexican census data offer some of the first "hard evidence that flows back to Mexico had grown over the same period."

Of course they are leaving. Our president has more important isssues to face than the economy and jobs. He just had to spend trillions we didn't have on Obamacare, Cash for clunkers, stimulus foolishness, and our ever increasing welfare state. All those green jobs he promised, were no more than the illegals who do your lawn. THERE ARE NO GOOD JOBS!!! WE ARE IN A DEEP RECESSION!!! This president's legacy will one of scandal, fraud, and waste. Folks will eventually be told the truth about his manufactured/photoshopped birth certificate as well. You heard it here, he WAS born in Kenya and his real BC is still there. Look it up nonbelievers!!! First Bush and now the CROOK!!! We can't take another BOZO folks. Taco Bell is a national franchise that has no idea what Mexican food is. Houstonians are fearful of too many Mexicans going back home, lest we lose some of our unbelievably great Mexican restaurants. Ask anyone getting off of a plane at the Houston airport what they want to do first while in Houston and many will say, get some Mexican food.

As a Christian nation we are obligated to lend a helping hand. Don't blame the employers. Blame the government that opened the flood gates while the housing market was booming in the last decade. We needed men to build these houses and successive Texas Governors turned a blind eye to illegal immigration while their millionaire home builder buddies reaped the rewards of cheap labor. I've been to Mexico City. I've seen the squalor. I've seen the breeding with reckless abandon. I've seen the uneducated fall into the same economic traps. The United States offers them a miniscule possibility for economic advancement. That is why they come here. When state and federal governments look the other way, don't blame the citizens of Texas for recognizing the struggles of these people and offering them a helping hand with yard work or house work. We would not be true Christians if we turned away from their poverty.

Why is it so hard for people to understand that America does not want ILLEGAL immigrants?? LEGAL immigration is fine, no one has a problem with that...........you're cries of "racism" are misplaced........all ILLEGAL immigrants shouldn't be here in the 1st place, so no sympathy for them, they need to G T F O .............hence the word "illegal".......look it up

The problem with saying that we only want "legal" immigrants and that it's not a racist policy is that the number of legal work vistas and non related/ non marriage immigration allowed from mexico is laughable. Only 94k people were legally naturalized from 2009-2011. Maybe if we had reasonable quotas and limits instead of only allowing people into the country if they have $1m USD to invest we would be able to reasonably control illegal immigration!

We just don't want you and can't afford to educate you. We have so many illegal mexican children in the system, whose parents refuse to assimilate to this country and our English speaking ways, just leave. They cost less at what? My wife is a nurse and the numbers of illegals that come in the ER without insurance compared to those that have it are staggering. The reason that illegals take the jobs is because they can't get a job that requires any sort of verification. I see at Bank of America weekly where their paychecks are cashed with some very sketch ID's. Why I would agree that 99% of all americans are to lazy to work the fields, your statements are infact WRONG!

Even they're finding fewer opportunities in this country. However, rather than gloat over their departure, I fear we will soon be seeing Americans leaving as well. The greedy 1% have all but ruined our nation. Many of us are now going to be forced to leave to make a living elsewhere if conditions don't improve. We have to get our industries, our rights and our nation back.

This is the exact problem with our country. We have everyone standing around pointing fingers but nobody wants to take responsiblity. The so called "1%" is not ruining this country, this government with its spend spend spend policy is whats ruining this country. We need smaller spending and smaller government to get our country back to where it was, not to get rid of the rich people. This country would have never made it if it werent for your so called "1%".

The problem with people who leave America to make a better living elsewhere in the world; will have to hire people at very low wages to provide the goods and services needed for a better life. This would in turn, turn the American looking for a better life into the new 1%er and the citizens outside America who provide cheaper goods and services would then become the new 99%ers.

I've worked with "illegals" and americans my entire life. It's safe to say the hispanics work three times harder with less complaints than their white/black counterparts. If every illegal disappeared tomorrow, this country would be worse, not better. The so called 50 million unemployed people could have these jobs if they wanted them, but they don't want them. Hence, we need people to work for $8 an hour. Unless we want to pay Taco Bell workers $20 an hour or our dishwashers $18 an hour. Don't complain when your Big Mac costs $9

There are a variety of employment visas that allow legal immigration into the US. This includes temporary seasonal employee visas.. the H-2A visa for temporary agricultural workers. Over 150,000 of these were issued in 2009 according to information presented to a House committee reviewing this program last year.

While there is no limit (other than need for workers) on the number of these visas issued, the regulations concerning the working and living conditions of these workers (coupled with the ease of getting illegal workers to take the jobs) make it difficult for employers complying with these laws to compete. President G.W. Bush made it easier as far as he could via regulations and greatly increased the number of these visas issued while trying to get an expanded guest worker program put in place to grant legal immigration status to seasonal workers... however, ironically, President Obama has since rescinded these regulations with a corresponding drop in visas issued and increase in percentage of temporary agricultural workers here illegally.

You mentioned work visas, and how there are different types of them. One thing though is this is a legal way to enter a country (no matter which one) and I feel most of the frustration is over the illegal entries into the country. Who ever you may be, if you come legally and pay taxes and such then there is no problem, but when people pay taxes to support illegals that's when people get upset.

Living here in Arizona I can tell you that it had more to do with the poor economy perpetuated by Obama than it did his deportation strategy. If Obama did such a good job with immigration, then why can't we use the Southern half of the Arizona desert for recreation without getting shot by drug runners? By the way, the Republican backed SB1070, although crippled by the federal courts, did more to stop illegal immigration than Obama's actions.

During the First WW the Germans sent a telegram (called the Zimmerman telegram) to the Mexican government that Germany wud return all the territories confiscated after the "Mexican War" back to Mexico IF they wud come on the side of the Axis. Mexico told them politely to eff off. During the Second WW the US asked Mexico to grow the poppy plant so they cud manufacture morphine to kill the pain of our wounded troops. Which they did. Mexico has been a staunch ally of the US thru all the indignities heaped on Mexico and Mexicans by our ignorant citizenry through out the centuries.Yet "Americans" love to vacation in Mexico! While I find that some of these comments are a little extreme, I do think that if someone is here illegally, they should not be here to begin with. It would be nice if these people came here legally, worked hard, then put their money back into our economy, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case. Many of them are here illegally, working hard, and then putting their money back into the Mexican economy by sending it back home to their families. How is this right? When I see that one of the likely causes of them not coming over here anymore is the "failing economy" I just shake my head. How nice it must be for you to jump ship when things aren't on the upswing. If you want to be an American then that means having to put up with the B.S that comes with it. Clearly, if you are so quick to leave when things aren't all rosey...I can't say you'll be missed. After reading this article I was happy. I'm tired of being an American and getting treated like a second class citizen by people that only speak Spanish. You are in America....if you aren't going to contribute to the economy, at least try and learn the language. I wouldn't go into your country without knowing Spanish.

It's a beautiful language and worthy of learning in my opinion. Any one-language American will be greatly gratified once they realize what a beautiful language Spanish is. Unfortunately, the way it is taught in high school and college, no one will ever really learn with exceptions. I recommend a 6-week immersion course in Guadalajara or Mexico
City as a starter. At the same time Mexico is hungry for native speakers of American-English, the money language.

Believe it or not, and I don't mean this sarcstically, I'm happy for the people of Mexico if things have finally turned around for the better. I've been outside the USA to a few countries in the Carribean and Central America, and I understand that people are just people. They want to be able to make money to feed themselves, their family, and have a roof over their head, and clothes on their backs. And although I don't agree with illegal immigration anywhere, if the jobs were here in the USA, and not in Mexico, then it only made sense to try and get work here if you are a Mexican.

But, if things have turned around for the economic better in Mexico, you guys might want to watch out. You may just find more than a few Americans relocating to Mexico for cheaper housing, free health care, orgnic food, and fantastic weather, compared to the way politicins are screwing up the USA!

Mexico was part of Spain. The US Southwest is no more "rightfully Mexico's property" than Mexico is "rightfully Spain's property." But the difference is that the US was attacked by Mexico in 1847 and won a war that followed the attack. Then the US, in a bout of generosity, paid for the land that it acquired by treaty. Under the prevailing rules of international law, therefore, none of the US Southwest is either legally or morally or culturally part of Mexico. There were no Mexicans in the US SW before Spain brought them in. Just Native Americans who had and want NO affiliation with Mexico.

Now, where did Native Americans come from? They too are immigrants, so they have no compelling prior claim either. Which means ultimately, we may dispense with all the "Argumentam ad absurdem" bulls**t about "prior claims" and simply recognize that the US SW is part of the USA, and that therefore legal citizens of the USA and legal entrants to the USA are the only ones with any legitimate reason to be in the USA, including the US SW.

They would just rather force YOU to do that for them! Having children you can't afford to feed or raise is a form of child abuse, if you force someone else to support them for you so the children won't suffer, you are abusing them as well! The solution to the problem is simple. The social security card has to be changed to a new tamper proof, high tech card only issued to all current American citizens that can easily be verified by any employer. Any worker for any job must have this card. No card = no job = no illegal aliens. Any employer big or small has any workers without the card is a $50,000 fine for each offense. Yes there can be VISA and temporary alien workers but that would be by special tamper proof I.D. cards with specific end dates. No bringing whole families and must leave the U.S. at the end of the work permit term. Again any violation by any employer is a $50,000 fine for each occurrence. Again no card = no work = self-deportation = no illegal aliens. Also no welfare, social services, and only emergency medical care for non-citizens. Of course legal immigration is O.K. and would be accommodated. Any illegal aliens found would be deported. Not the solution Liberals are looking for but a solution in accordance with the law. A solution that would enforce existing law.

Great ideas Ed. I'm all for it but when perception is the controlling factor of viewing all immigrants as illegals then even those that enter our country legally are viewed as such. People are just very ignorant. As an American citizen, I do not support illegal immigration. A few of my family members are from Mexico. I do not care how they got here in the 80s but I am glad they did they now know English and Spanish fluently. They work as managers for a National business and they go to conferences all of the time with the Big wigs of their companies in order to learn everything and return to work to teach the workers who know little English how to do their jobs and be more efficient.
A lot of people do come here for very wrong reasons. I do not disagree with this at all. I think there are quite a few that come with the right intentions. They get established. They have a family and they are able to immerse themselves into society without any problems at all. I think we need to stop grouping every immigrant who comes to America as "illegal' or "less of a person than I am." This could not be farther from the truth. I am proud of my heritage. Also, for those that do not know, Mexico, especially Southern Mexico is beautiful. We tend to be more Native American Indian than Mexican though. The beaches, the towns, the lifespans people are able to live are amazing. They are happy and active well into their 90s. People are able to play sports well into their early 70s. Their should be an amount of education taught before any discrimination can be subdued. EDUCATE BEFORE YOU SPEAK!
Saying things like" send those rats back" I am sure you would love to be called that.

It is crazy how no one in the comments understands the misleading nature of this story. Shameful CNN. The article should read LEGAL immigration comes to a stand still. Though true that legal immigration and those leaving are now about equal this does not account AT ALL for the illegal immigration. Just look at the numbers supplied by this story and it is easy to see the misleading. Between 2005 and 2010 1.37 million mexicans came to US. They fail to mention these are all legal. Later in the article they mention that in just 2005 alone illegal immigration was over 1 million. Between 2005 and 2011 several million illegals came to the US. The total number is far from a stand still.

And besides that, the figures for reduced apprehension of illegal aliens trying to cross the border is partially due to the fact that Border Patrol agents are being instructed to NOT apprehend illegals. More indication that the purpose of this article was to muddy the water.

Mexico is beautiful, and if it has it bad economically, is because the US greedy free market has vampired the life out of it. The cartels are fueled by US guns and US unstoppable craving for drugs. There are some few cities, like Juarez, that have it real bad (a border city, by the way). Most Mexico is peaceful, calm and very much enjoyable to live in. There are no kids shooting kids in schools, nor crazy dudes blowing government buildings or shooting members of congress or preparing for the end of the world stacking guns, cans and water. Although imperfect, like any other country, Mexico has a future. It's laughable to hear people like Glenn Beck squeaking like a little girl afraid that "the mejico madness will spill over the US", as if there weren't enough madness with the Left/Right schizophrenic country. I'm not saying Mexico is better than the US, just that you arrogant g r i n g os (mostly conservative Republicans) have a very misguided and uninformed version of who you are in relation to the rest of the world. Mexicans are realizing this and are going back. Be glad, but let's see you keep loosing job industries to countries who are willing to do hard work. Let's see what that does to your screwed up economy. Soon you'll have it as bad as Mexico itself.

Tell the truth for a change. The problems in Mexico have always been the same. The corrupt Mexican politicans, military and police steal the vast wealth of Mexico and couldn't care less about the uneducated and poor. They just encourage the poor and uneduated to cross over the border to get rid of them.

My point was not to raise Mexico above the US. But to give a little perspective to the overall superiority complex many US citizens have of Mexico. They think "us good, they bad". When many of the evils that haunt Mexico have US written on them. Own up to that, instead of pretending to have no part in it. And worse. So many racist hate-filled rants that want, on one side, a country with global participations and, on the other, a closed up country that assumes the rest are no less than barbarians or animals. You see what's wrong with the picture, or do I have to draw it on a chalk board spewing conspiracy theories?

    • and YOU R DELUSIONAL, amigo.......

In Mexico in order to be successful you have to have a white skin, if blue eyed the better, just look at the Soap Operas the ones they show here in the Spanish channels, mostly of the actors are white, blue eyed , blonds. It seems that in Mexico they worship the white race. You hardly see a brown Indigenous looking or black skin person there. How can Mexico be the best, amigo, when they treat their indigenous and blacks like second citizens. In Mexico, the rich worship the white race. Period.

Did my post say otherwise? Sorry, but not "Period". The story doesn't end there. Racial problems are present in both Mexico and US. No one was arguing that. Neither country is perfect. But many here seem to think they are so superior.

As far as i recall Obamas has only been President for a bit less than 4 years.

Also I recall it was Ronald Reagan that granted amnesty to illegal aliens ..correct? Perhaps he saw a benefit in getting more taxpayer rather than expending more taxpayers money in Jails and building walls. I guess he was trying to build the economy. Then Bill Clinton had one of the fastest growing economy periods that i can recall..coincidence?

    Mr. Rhoades,
Do you know for a fact that this information is valid? If we need a better prevention form of immigration, we need the Government to supervise both borders, which now one is, Mexico and the other is not, Canada. I don't know from where do you hear that illegal immigrants are taking all the social services from the Americans. I guess you don't hear about lazy families who don't want to work are the ones receiving food stamps and money every month, and we don't hear about that, but you want to publish this saying that illegal immigration is costing millions of taxpayer monies yearly. who is going to work the corn fields, and the other agriculture lands, you or who else who want to work. These immigrants come here to work hard and support their families abroad. We are immigrants and the only Americans are the Natives, and that's it!.

Our president is supposed to be a 'leader'. Obama and the entire dem party spent 6 years blaming everything on Bush. Now your stating the position is just a 'figure head'.

I don't think Romney is a good 'campaigner' (the only thing Obama can do), however, I think he'll make a good 'leader', which is what we need.

I read most of the major news outlets – here's some news for you (which, if you opened your mind, you'll easily find to be true). Fox news – while leaning right, is much, much, much for balanced than CNN, the networks and the NY Times. There's one thing about liberals, they believe and advocate for free speech – as long as they agree with the message. My guess is, you fall in that category.

Companies hiring illegals need to be punished. That's the only way to stop illegal immigration. And when a dozen apples cost $8 at Costco, then there is no way a farm or orchard can't afford to pay a legal wage to it's workers. Food prices are sky high, so let's make sure farm hands are paid a legal wage.

Instead of illegal aliens doing farm work, it could be converted to work for welfare programs. The ourdoor picking work should only be 1/2 day in 2 shifts in the first place. It's too gruelling for all day work. Or it could be a full day with 1/2 the staff can pick for 1/2 day and box it up for the other 1/2 day, trading jobs with each other for the second 1/2 of the day. With 1/2 day shifts it allows the welfare recipient time to either go to school to get better skills or look for work. There are far too many able bodied welfare scammers living in California's Central Valley, millions of them! They settle there because their welfare dollar goes farther than a large city.

If you are a career welfare person it doesn't matter about living in a place where there is work available because you have no intention of working in the first place and it gives you an excure to bilk the system and stay on welfare (no jobs where you live).
