Asians, more than Latinos, are largest group of new arrivals in U.S.

(CNN) –The immigration debate often centers on stemming the flow of people entering the United States illegally and what to do about securing borders to the south. But here's a fact that goes without much attention: Asians have now taken over Latinos as the largest group of new arrivals every year.
In 2010, 36% of new immigrants were Asians compared to 31% for Hispanics, according to a report released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center.
That's a significant change from a decade ago, when 19% of immigrants were Asians and 59% were Hispanics.
"They were already a significant part of the immigration story. It seems like in the last few years they are the most important part of the immigration story," said Karthick Ramakrishnan, a political scientist at the University of California at Riverside, and expert on Asian-American immigration and civic participation.
He said that if the trends continue, Asian-Americans will play greater roles in shaping American society and perhaps, more significantly in an election year, they will have an impact at the polls.
"This is an important moment to see immigration for what it is - that it is far more complicated and diverse than deporting illegal immigrants," Ramakrishnan said, referring to discussion sparked by President Barack Obama's policy shift last week to spare some children of illegal immigrants from deportation.
Far fewer Asian Americans enter the United States illegally than do Hispanics. The Pew survey looked at recent arrivals of people with both legal and unauthorized status, as well as those arriving with work, student or other temporary visas.
Pew's exhaustive new report on Asian-Americans found important differences between Asian-Americans and other population groups in America. It also shed light on the diversity among Asian-Americans, who sometimes cringe at the broadness of the category that covers every country of origin from Afghanistan to South Korea.
The Pew survey showed that across the board, Asian-Americans are more satisfied than any other Americans with their lives, finances and direction of the country.
They also place more value on traditional marriage, family and parenthood and usually possess a strong work ethic.
Nearly seven in 10 respondents said people could get ahead if they are willing to work hard. And 93% of Asian-Americans describe people of their origin as "very hard-working," whereas only 57% said the same about Americans as a whole.
Asian-Americans also attain college degrees (61%) at about double the rate of recent non-Asian immigrants (30%), Pew found.
"The overall picture that you get from this survey is that like immigrants throughout American history, Asian-Americans are strivers," said Pew’s Paul Taylor, who edited the study.
"But what's interesting about them are the educational credentials.” He said. “By far they are the best educated in American history."
It's not that Asian-Americans value education more.
"Everyone values education," Ramakrishnan said. "But the difference is in the sacrifices Asian-Americans are willing to make."
He said his department’s research has found instances where Asian families in Southern California will move into a much smaller house in order to move to the best school districts.
However, some Asian-Americans recognize that they may go overboard in stressing hard work.
Nearly 39% in the Pew survey said Asian-American parents put too much pressure on their children to do well in school. Think "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother," the provocative memoir by Yale Law Professor Amy Chua that sparked conversation about strict parenting.
Pew recognized the vast differences between the nationalities lumped under the U.S. Census Bureau category of Asian-American - the six major countries are China, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Vietnam and India.
New citizens: Why did you become an American?
Indian-Americans lead other groups in terms of income and education.
Seven in 10 Indian-American adults ages 25 and older have a college degree, compared with about half of Americans of Korean, Chinese, Filipino and Japanese ancestry, and about a quarter of Vietnamese-Americans.
Ramakrishnan attributed that largely to the fact that the Indians coming to America are the cream of the crop. They also have very high proficiency levels in English because of a history of British colonialism.
As a whole, Pew found Asian median income and household wealth exceeded average Americans.
Asian median annual household income is $66,000 versus $49,800 for all Americans.
Asians who came to this country are more likely than their compatriots back home to say their standard of living is better than that of their parents at the same stage of life.
But there are differences on the socioeconomic ladder.
Americans with Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese and “other U.S. Asian” origins have a higher poverty rate than does the general public, while Pew found that those with Indian, Japanese and Filipino origins have lower rates.
There were other factors that made the groups distinct.
The survey noted that Indian-Americans stand out in the personal importance they place on parenting - 78% of them said being a good parent is one of the most important things to them personally.
Korean-Americans are the most likely to say discrimination against their group is a major problem, and they are the least likely to say that their group gets along very well with other racial and ethnic groups.
In contrast, Filipinos are the most positive on interethnic and interracial relations in America.
The Vietnamese are the only major subgroup who arrived on American shores as political refugees; the others say they have come mostly for economic, educational and family reasons.
Ramakrishnan said the Vietnamese were also the only subgroup that tended to vote Republican but that is changing given anti-immigration positions and other exclusionary measures supported by some GOP lawmakers.
The American dream began later for Asian-Americans than other immigrant groups because of racial discrimination.
It was not until 1965, during the height of the civil rights movement and robust economic growth, that the United States opened its doors to immigration from all parts of the world.
The decision paved the way for Asian-Americans to grow from less than 1% of the population more than 40 years ago to nearly 6% now.
Persisting prejudice against Asians led to many communities developing in their own enclaves, Taylor said. Hence the blossoming of Chinatowns, Japantowns and Koreatowns.
But now Asian-Americans are more likely to live in mixed neighborhoods and marry out of their race.
"When newly minted medical school graduate Priscilla Chan married Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg last month, she joined the 37% of all recent Asian-American brides who wed a non-Asian groom," the Pew report said.
Between 2008 and 2010, 29% of all Asian newlyweds married someone of a different race, compared with 26% of Hispanics, 17% of blacks and 9% of whites.
Among them, Japanese had the highest rate of intermarriage and Indians had the lowest, Pew said. More than half of recent Japanese newlyweds married a non-Asian; among recent Indian newlyweds, one in eight did.
Another big distinction was with single parenthood. Forty-one percent of all American parents are single parents. Among Asians, that number plummets to 16 % and among Indians, it's 2% to 3%.
Pew spoke with 3,511 Asian-Americans between January 3 and March 27. The telephone interviews were conducted in English and seven Asian languages.
Ramakrishnan said the Asian-American population, unnoticed before in many spheres of American life, would only continue to increase its share of the spotlight.
In swing states like Virginia and Nevada, where census data now shows Asians make up 9% of the population, Asian-Americans will make a mark at the ballot box in November, Ramakrishnan predicted. Most tend to vote Democratic.
"Republicans should be wary," he said.
At the very least, Taylor said the robust Asian-American immigration is sure to redefine the debate over people coming to these shores.
"Illegal immigration has been a driver of the immigration policy debate and illegal immigration has been primarily associated with Hispanics," he said.
But now, he said, the discussion may be forced to keep up with immigration realities.

As a child of first generation immigrants -Irish-Italian-I need to say that immigration should be stopped for the United States at this time-Our open door policy was intended to populate a country in need of citizens. Asians study and work diligently, and they have the lowest crime rate by race (except Southeast Asians like Philippinos).
I'm sure America will be a richer country with these people coming in to become Americans.
Philippines may have lots of crimes everyday but not all are uneducated. It's funny because you will see a lot of Filipinos around the world being successful in whatever career they choose. It's a fact.
That's because they are self sufficient and motivated. They don't come from a place where everything is given to you on a silver platter and all you have to do is cash the check.
I have taught English as a Second Language for 20 years to many nationalities so I speak from experience. If Asian immigrants have not studied English prior to coming to the U.S., (a rarity), they learn English as soon as possible. They do not expect anyone to translate for them. If they need a translation, they have an electronic translator to help. They do not expect everything to be in their language at airports, stores, etc. Asian students are embarrassed if they do not understand our culture and they try very hard to experience American culture. However, in my experience it is rare to have a Latino (Hispanic) student in my class who ASKS for additional homework to practice. Latinos often miss class to work and their desire is to make money. In years past it was to send that money back home to their poor families. Today, it is to buy things here in the U.S. such as cars, jewelry, etc. If I sound biased, I apologize. It is merely the facts I have witnessed. Education is the number one priority of Asians; making money is the priority of Hispanics. Hispanics have their own sub-culture in communities so they do not feel the need to learn English. Asians want to assimilate into our culture. While I do understand the need to feed starving families 'back home' in their native countries, I feel any immigrant from any country should come here the legal way. If I thought the majority were sending money back home, I would have more empathy for their situation. African students are another separate situation. Many are here on a political refugee status. Due to their lack of education in their native war-torn countries, they often have not had one day in a classroom. They start English classes, struggle and many give up on learning English as soon as they have a job. They regularly send money home and that money feeds their large families. They have no desire to attain 'things' in the U.S. and are happy with second-hand clothes, furniture, etc. Their goal is to make enough money to build an appropriate house in their country, then return home after about 10 years in the U.S. Of course there are exceptions to all of the above statements. I have a program of about 300 multi-cultural students, so I speak from my experience only. In my opinion, I would like to see illegal immigrants be required to learn English, finish high school, have a clean legal record and hold a job for at least four years. Then if that is done, allow them to apply for Citizenship like others do. We are a multi-cultural country. Our country was founded by immigrants. I have met many fine, hard-working immigrants through the years. Those who succeed and find that 'dream' they came to this country to find, have learned English and USE English on a daily basis.
The Government was created by immigrants your correct about that. However morally speaking and in the eyes of God this was is and will always be the Mother Land of Native Americans.

I reply to you because of your experience and shared beliefs-They are reasonabIe. Looked for this article because I just called a phone company to address a billing issue and was told 1 for english 2 for spanish-and I pushed neither to see what would happen-I was hung up on.I know for a fact that asian immigration exceeds hispanic-and I wonder why hispanic is always the other option-And I feel uncomfortable with that.Why has the business world jumped on the need to communicate with this particular ethnic group? Above all others-even those who exceed in numbers?It will appear not politically correct to state what I believe the reasons are so I will refrain from that-But I will say that construction etc. does seem to rely on this particular group of low wage workers and all the service needs that implies.
Interesting observations. My observations differ somewhat. From working with Asian women and living in an area with many Asians, it seems that they don't have much interest in having friendships with people who are not Asian. I always see groups of Asian females together with no other races in the group. They marry white men, but then I never see them with the white family members. I don't call that willing to assimilate. What you say about hispanics is sadly true. I see it all the time. My husband, who is a Hispanic immigrant) left high school because he wanted to make money. The mother was happy because she needed him to help with the bills. I think it's a combination of ignorance and short sightedness. Fortunately, I have been able to steer him away from people with this mentality and he has accomplished a lot.
In the San Gabriel Valley section of Los Angeles County everything is in Chinese. I don't know where you get the idea that they learn English. All of the businesses here for miles and miles are in Chinese. If you're not Asian, they'll serve you, but then hustle you out right away.

Not so. Actually it is good to see that other nationalities are making America their home. It probably bothers the tea party...(oh I'm sorry), or others that think that America is mostly white...well that is changing...oops it has changed already!!! Everyone is bringing something different to the table. If Asians are the most educated, then maybe the rest of us will get on board and focus on education and less on the boob tube and trying to be famous or whatever our young people are focusing on. Maybe focusing on education will reduce gang violence and maybe even help some stay out of drugs and alcohol. Latinos – Well at least the non-Spanish part of them – were the Asian immigrants of 15,000 years ago.
Asian immigration from India, Pakistan, and China should be stopped completely. We have nothing in common with those people. Stand up Americans. We are a sovereign country. We the indigenous (descended from those who formed the nation over 200 years ago) should have a direct say in saying – "get the hell out of my country". We don't need the foreigner here. As a California Hispanic, born and raised in Cal...we don't need any immigrants from Asia OR Mexico-we have to start looking for us Californians first and foremost, no matter what ethnicity you are–if you're from Cal, you're Californian. The U.S. federal immigration problem is broken-we need a more proactive state policy that disfavors international immigration into California if our children are to have any viable future in the state... We need shut immigration off completely for at least 15 years. When America had minimal immigration into it in the 1940's & 50's, that's when the greatest realization of prosperity & quality of life happened, ever since the immigration reppeal, it's been in steady decline!
Given the high poverty and high crime rate of Hispanics immigrants, Asian immigration would be a necessity to counter them as Asians have the lowest crime rates of all races and the highest income rates of all races. Not to mention that Asians have very high entrepreneur rates which creates jobs for everyone.
We NEED the Asian immigrants, to keep the hi-tech sector of this country afloat. US math education is so poor that the US does not train a sufficient number of computer scientists or mathematicians to keep the high-tech industries functional.
African Americans have no home, but America. They did not come here by choice. Most American Americans have 60% White blood from slavery. You can not judge them by their color of skin. So, They would not be accepted in Africa because of their White blood from this country. Slavery built this country. You can not cut out the past from America's history.

Asians in Japan take English speaking classes before they come here. California belongs to Chicanos–we're the majority of people under age 18...Spanish or more, Spanglish is an official language of everyday life in L.A., Fresno, San Dieog-basically in Cal, lol. So why demonize us Chicanos for us being in "our" homeland? You don't see people going to Quebec Canada complaining that French speak French, why complain on us for honoring the founders California's heritage, Spanish...that's our heritage, and other than Native Americans, our ethnic group has been here the longest!
Well as an "Hispanic" I think of "Spanglish" as a very underclass thing; it's irritating to hear someone speak Spanish or English with words thrown from either language into their speech. The term "Chicano" is just disgusting; I associate it with gangs and crime. The actual meaning of Chicano is "one with one Mestizo (Euro-Amerindian) parent and one White parent (European.)"

American culture as in what? What is American culture? The American culture changes and shifts as it incorporates facets from other cultures. The traditional view of American culture is one of Anglo-Saxon. And no one thinks that except for white supremacists.

Tired to read all this racist comments, the true is that all this dirty talking don't bring anything good to our society and country. Asians are smart, blacks are lazy, latinos are ignorants, white are racists. The true is that I have friends of all kind of ethnicity and I have seen good examples and bad examples and every ethnic group and subculture in this country. Some people is just looking to something to hate and see only the negative side of things. I am hispanic and , with sadness in my hearthI say that I get desapointed and emabarraced with the behaiver of some hispanics, but also I'm proud of the achivments of others, so I can't change what other people do, all I can do es lead with my example to be a good citicen, I love my city, my state, I care for my community, and practice good values.

Most immigrants, as a whole, come to America to get an education, work hard, and to be an American. I'm also asian and came to this country 39 years ago with a couple of hundred dollars in my pocket. Right from the get go I had a goal and that was to work as hard and make as much money as I can while still young and able to. I've been working 60 to 70 hours a week and at times during holidays but didn't mind because I had a goal. Today I have a beautiful wife of hispanic ancestry 3 independent children each of whom have their own houses and kids, my house sits in a golf course and also owns a 3 bedroom condo on the beach also have 11 rental apartments and a 4 bedroom house on rental. I also drives a Mercedes Benz SL500 and a Chevy Avalanche and my wife drives a Jaguar XJ8. I also retired at 54 years of age. LIFE IS GOOD in AMERICA

I have always found that other nationalities are accepted quickly who go through the immigration process, especially those who desire to spend the time, to follow our laws and become citizens. Very few people want those who take the time to do so leaglly to leave the US.

The important statement in this article is while there are far more Asian immigrants to the US than Hispanic, there are significantly less illegal immigrants. The key is illegal immigrants. The large majority of the population of the US, 99% or more, are descended from immigrants. My only complaint is we as a nation spend far too much on the illegal immigrants. Not one penny of tax money should go to support any illegal immigrant.

MY view ..At some point in life ...Every One should immigrate to another part of the world and experience other cultures. It might make the world better place . Worlds wisest leaders are immigrants at some point in their life. Mahatma Gandhi, Barack Obama , Aung San Su Kyi are immigrants at some point in their life.
Even Jesus was an immigrant, Jose took his family and run to Egypt when Herods were killing the babies in Betlehem, was this family legal while was living in egypt? well, yes and no, they didn't have the though immigration laws that we have these days, but the equivalent to those laws would be an invitation letter from egypt rules, and that didn't happened. 🙁

the picture is misleading. big chunk of asians that came over are the darker kinds from south asia or the middle east. not the lighter skin ones pictured here from northern asia. cnn needs to be more accurate and specific with their depictions.

Let's face it. Asians are the model minority in the U.S. and a lot of whites and others are jealous of their achievement. Like the crabs in the bucket trying to pull down those above them. Why would Republicans be wary? I am an Asian American and I always vote Republican. The Asians are highly educated and generally possess traditional family value and are conservative with money. Most of them are fiscally conservative and socially moderate like myself. Economic issues are generally more important to Asians than social issues (not that the latter are not important, just not as much by comparison).
You are not the only one Asian American they are talking about in the article. If you vote for Republican and agree with their political views, it does not necessarily mean all the Asian Americans do the same. In fact, the article is clearly pointing out that "Most [Asian Americans] tend to vote Democratic". Please don't embarrass yourself.

So the average Indian American could buy a plate at that dinner and end up as an average American... lol.
