Asians, more than Latinos, are largest group of new arrivals in U.S.

By Moni Basu, CNN

(CNN) –The immigration debate often centers on stemming the flow of people entering the United States illegally and what to do about securing borders to the south. But here's a fact that goes without much attention: Asians have now taken over Latinos as the largest group of new arrivals every year.

In 2010, 36% of new immigrants were Asians compared to 31% for Hispanics, according to a report released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center.

That's a significant change from a decade ago, when 19% of immigrants were Asians and 59% were Hispanics.

"They were already a significant part of the immigration story. It seems like in the last few years they are the most important part of the immigration story," said Karthick Ramakrishnan, a political scientist at the University of California at Riverside, and expert on Asian-American immigration and civic participation.

He said that if the trends continue, Asian-Americans will play greater roles in shaping American society and perhaps, more significantly in an election year, they will have an impact at the polls.

"This is an important moment to see immigration for what it is - that it is far more complicated and diverse than deporting illegal immigrants," Ramakrishnan said, referring to discussion sparked by President Barack Obama's policy shift last week to spare some children of illegal immigrants from deportation.

Far fewer Asian Americans enter the United States illegally than do Hispanics. The Pew survey looked at recent arrivals of people with both legal and unauthorized status, as well as those arriving with work, student or other temporary visas.

Pew's exhaustive new report on Asian-Americans found important differences between Asian-Americans and other population groups in America. It also shed light on the diversity among Asian-Americans, who sometimes cringe at the broadness of the category that covers every country of origin from Afghanistan to South Korea.

The Pew survey showed that across the board, Asian-Americans are more satisfied than any other Americans with their lives, finances and direction of the country.

They also place more value on traditional marriage, family and parenthood and usually possess a strong work ethic.

Nearly seven in 10 respondents said people could get ahead if they are willing to work hard. And 93% of Asian-Americans describe people of their origin as "very hard-working," whereas only 57% said the same about Americans as a whole.

Asian-Americans also attain college degrees (61%) at about double the rate of recent non-Asian immigrants (30%), Pew found.

"The overall picture that you get from this survey is that like immigrants throughout American history, Asian-Americans are strivers," said Pew’s Paul Taylor, who edited the study.

"But what's interesting about them are the educational credentials.” He said. “By far they are the best educated in American history."

It's not that Asian-Americans value education more.

"Everyone values education," Ramakrishnan said. "But the difference is in the sacrifices Asian-Americans are willing to make."

He said his department’s research has found instances where Asian families in Southern California will move into a much smaller house in order to move to the best school districts.

However, some Asian-Americans recognize that they may go overboard in stressing hard work.

Nearly 39% in the Pew survey said Asian-American parents put too much pressure on their children to do well in school. Think "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother," the provocative memoir by Yale Law Professor Amy Chua that sparked conversation about strict parenting.

Pew recognized the vast differences between the nationalities lumped under the U.S. Census Bureau category of Asian-American - the six major countries are China, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Vietnam and India.

New citizens: Why did you become an American?

Indian-Americans lead other groups in terms of income and education.

Seven in 10 Indian-American adults ages 25 and older have a college degree, compared with about half of Americans of Korean, Chinese, Filipino and Japanese ancestry, and about a quarter of Vietnamese-Americans.

Ramakrishnan attributed that largely to the fact that the Indians coming to America are the cream of the crop. They also have very high proficiency levels in English because of a history of British colonialism.

As a whole, Pew found Asian median income and household wealth exceeded average Americans.

Asian median annual household income is $66,000 versus $49,800 for all Americans.

Asians who came to this country are more likely than their compatriots back home to say their standard of living is better than that of their parents at the same stage of life.

But there are differences on the socioeconomic ladder.

Americans with Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese and “other U.S. Asian” origins have a higher poverty rate than does the general public, while Pew found that those with Indian, Japanese and Filipino origins have lower rates.

There were other factors that made the groups distinct.

The survey noted that Indian-Americans stand out in the personal importance they place on parenting - 78% of them said being a good parent is one of the most important things to them personally.

Korean-Americans are the most likely to say discrimination against their group is a major problem, and they are the least likely to say that their group gets along very well with other racial and ethnic groups.

In contrast, Filipinos are the most positive on interethnic and interracial relations in America.

The Vietnamese are the only major subgroup who arrived on American shores as political refugees; the others say they have come mostly for economic, educational and family reasons.

Ramakrishnan said the Vietnamese were also the only subgroup that tended to vote Republican but that is changing given anti-immigration positions and other exclusionary measures supported by some GOP lawmakers.

The American dream began later for Asian-Americans than other immigrant groups because of racial discrimination.

It was not until 1965, during the height of the civil rights movement and robust economic growth, that the United States opened its doors to immigration from all parts of the world.

The decision paved the way for Asian-Americans to grow from less than 1% of the population more than 40 years ago to nearly 6% now.

Persisting prejudice against Asians led to many communities developing in their own enclaves, Taylor said. Hence the blossoming of Chinatowns, Japantowns and Koreatowns.

But now Asian-Americans are more likely to live in mixed neighborhoods and marry out of their race.

"When newly minted medical school graduate Priscilla Chan married Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg last month, she joined the 37% of all recent Asian-American brides who wed a non-Asian groom," the Pew report said.

Between 2008 and 2010, 29% of all Asian newlyweds married someone of a different race, compared with 26% of Hispanics, 17% of blacks and 9% of whites.

Among them, Japanese had the highest rate of intermarriage and Indians had the lowest, Pew said. More than half of recent Japanese newlyweds married a non-Asian; among recent Indian newlyweds, one in eight did.

Another big distinction was with single parenthood. Forty-one percent of all American parents are single parents. Among Asians, that number plummets to 16 % and among Indians, it's 2% to 3%.

Pew spoke with 3,511 Asian-Americans between January 3 and March 27. The telephone interviews were conducted in English and seven Asian languages.

Ramakrishnan said the Asian-American population, unnoticed before in many spheres of American life, would only continue to increase its share of the spotlight.

In swing states like Virginia and Nevada, where census data now shows Asians make up 9% of the population, Asian-Americans will make a mark at the ballot box in November, Ramakrishnan predicted. Most tend to vote Democratic.

"Republicans should be wary," he said.

At the very least, Taylor said the robust Asian-American immigration is sure to redefine the debate over people coming to these shores.

"Illegal immigration has been a driver of the immigration policy debate and illegal immigration has been primarily associated with Hispanics," he said.

But now, he said, the discussion may be forced to keep up with immigration realities.

Honestly, a US citizen wants a certain salary and a non-US citizen will take less. I know researchers who will not hire US citizens because they can hire an engineer at $30,000 USD per year who is international, versus $50,000+ USD per year for a random US citizen.

The only really safe bet is to get into an industry where non-US citizens are not allowed, like certain government jobs.

To be fair, many Asian countries have strict immigration laws and one can argue that their racial uniformity contributes to their socioeconomic success. But since there isn't a native race to the United States (except for Native Americans) it's silly to argue that immigrants should be kept out in a country that was built by, and comprised almost exclusively of immigrants. Any attempt to curb legal immigration in the US is nothing short of pure racism, by ignorant people that think "American" means "White".

I agree with you that the republican congress is destroying America! Recently Bobby Jindel claimed that President Obama is dividing America and for four years now, the GOP has tried to label our President a divider! But that is so untrue because we all know that it is the republicans and their tea party who are spreading their hate and racism accross America and dividing this country! Since President Obama has been in office, never once has he or democrats ever called republicans names or try to belittle them as republicans have done to the President and to democrats and the middle class and poor. I believe when President Obama and the democrats say lets pass a jobs bill for the American people or let's put Americans first, or let's reduce healtcare costs for Americans, or let's extend unemployment benefits for those who are unemployed and struggling to support their families or let's end the illegitimate Iraqi war and bring our troops home to their love ones, or urge congress to work together for the good of country, I don't believe for a minute that that is called dividing America! Nonsense!

However, I believe when conservatives go around calling the President a food stamp president, a muslim, a socialist, a communists, a terrorist and so own and when they go around calling liberals shiftless and and lazy and criminals and losers and try to portray us as bums living off foodstamps and welfare or when they call for the assassination of our President or drive around with such hateful bumper stickers, I believe its conservatives who are truly the unpatriotic un-Americans dividing this country! Ask Donald Trump and ask the likes of Rush Limbaugh or Eric Cantor who keep spreading their blatant bigotry and racism across America!

Immigrants brought the good and the bad from their own cultures. We Americans can selectively learn from other cultures and change adaptively, which is what intelligent people do on a daily basis – learn/change/adapt. Eventually the most adaptive individuals will survive, and that is the process of natural selection, no racism or class system or anything else that were put into place to manipulate the masses can beat that.

It's not hard to get an H1 visa and come over HERE to the US to take an American's job for pennies on the dollar. I'm assuming this figures in all of the Indians/etc that are coming over here to provide cheap on-shore labor for unscrupulous American companies.

Only in the first year or so of their coming here do H1's make a little less than American citizens. By the third year their salaries are on par with American citizens. Also, there is a legal lower limit on wages that has to be honored. So your pennies to the dollar comment is BS.

Let's face it, if you were born here its because your great grandparents, great great grandparents or great great great grandparents came here as immigrants! Many many of the Eastern and Western Europeans who came here at the turn of the 19th century or earlier didn't speak a word of English! And many of them didn't contribute to America right away and many of them lived on government handouts! Furthermore, they didn't cross the border because as Anne said earlier, its because many of these such peoples lived in distances places, therefore they came by boat! Regardless of how you look at the situation, America will always be a country of aliens and immigrants, thus we would have to weed out the bad ones and return them to their native land!

I've been saying for years to people, that when people complain about illegal immigrants, they need to look further than trying to stereotype latinos from Mexico. In fact, visit the NE of the US to places like Baltimore, Philadelphia, Central & North Jersey, and NYC, and see how many asians you see in and out of China Town and elsewhere. Plenty, and not all of them are legal. There are plenty asians that get off of the boat into our ports that you don't know about, and everyone uses the latinos as an escapegoat instead.

In fact, I know people from some carribean countries that have lived in the US for decades, and they aren't legal. They've told me point blank that it's hard to get a visa from some places like Trinidad, Jamaica, Barbados, and other islands to get here to the US. Cause they know most of them won't come back if given a chance.

Main thing is, 50% of our illegl immigration problem is our fault. This country hasn't been serious about immigration since Pres. Reagan gave them amnesty back in the 80s. And now when there's a hard economic time for finding work, then all of a sudden it's a problem. But as long as everyone was making money in the US, off the backs of illegal aliens, there was no problem. Can't have it both ways. Why look at business owners tht hire illegal aliens, but turn your head away, and blame it solely on people illeglaly coming to this country that want to work?

Just like you can't force someone to buy meth from you, there has to be a demand. Simple as that.

And to be honest with you, the Mexicans that live around my way are some of the hardest working people I have ever seen. As well as are Jamaicains.

All they really want to do is go to work, come home to their family, and maybe have a drink or 2 at home. But if all you ever listen to is Fox News, or people that don't see for themselves what's really around you, you wouldn't know.

Yes, many times. Having lived in places with large immigrant populations, I can tell you for a fact that being "Asian" doesn't preclude one from being poor and/or on welfare. There are tons of jobs for well educated folks, especially in technology and companies are hiring now for jobs that haven't even been invented yet – tech moves so fast. The simple fact is that labour jobs are on the downswing. Machines and computers do many jobs that used to employ people. Even the internet and email is killing mail and couriers. And manufacturing is moving overseas because that's where the cheap labour is. All of this is why the working class rednecks on these pages are so mean – they are scared and they should be.

United States of America is a nation of and founded by immigrants. This has been going on for centuries, it was said about the Eastern European immigrants in the early 20th century, the Irish in the mid 19th, now I'd bet a good chunk of those immigrants are viewing new immigrants the same way as their grandparents and great grandparents were viewed.

Human nature is fascinating, fascinatingly consistent.

Yes and no. Was America founded by immigrants? Or were they pioneers? When they arrived in the new world, did they "become Americans", or did they fly back to their native countries multiple times per year, send their children there for extended summer vacations with relatives, stay connected with social media and foreign TV. Did they stay actively involved in the politics of their original countries? Were they all of similar ethnic and religious background? Today's immigration is very different, and it is simplistic to make this type of statement that you just did.

The reason why their memorials do NOT have these symbols...is because they were not American citizens. they where not of the coutnry they founded. They were not of the USA becasue it was not yet created. [Note: On your enxt visit, compare the Lincln memorial to those of Washington & Jefferson and speak to a docent to confirm.]

Take a trip to ANY MAJOR CITY, but we'll use New York City as an example since I can tell you exactly where to go there to look for immigrants who AREN'T LEGAL and AREN'T HISPANIC. Anyone who lives in NYC will tell you unless you have a death wish, DO NOT go to Chinatown at night if you aren't "part" (and by part, I don't even necessarily mean the same ethnicity, because even other Asians do it.) Check out Brighton Beach in Brooklyn too for some ILLEGAL EUROPEAN flavor if that's your fancy, the Russians run things there. Someone was bragging about African Immigrants? Check out Park Hill in Staten Island, TONS of illegal Africans there. Right now, it's just "cool" to hate the "Hispanics" (also want to add that Puerto Ricans are Hispanics, because Puerto Rico is part of the US, a lot of you didn't learn that in community college.) When you morons realize the issue isn't race, it's class, maybe humanity will have a shot, but right now things look pretty dismal. The only thing that will help this place at this rate is a giant asteroid. Humanity needs a reset.

There's good and bad in every race! Yes,its true that some illegal aliens from south of the border do bad things in America but there are more good aliens from the south who have raised their kids well in America, gone to college and contribute to this country. And speaking of south, what makes the southern white racists any better than the illegal aliens who come to this country and break the law? Let's face it, your confederate south was raised and built on illegal slave labor for four hundred years, therefore that makes you southern offsprings of the confederacy illegal aliens! Why don't you go jump off a bridge? America will be better off without you southern racists roaming the country calling yourselves patriots!

So true, immigrants from Africa are terrific, but that's the problem with the inequality of our immigration policy, the immigrants we desperately need don't get a chance. The people who run the border and yell the loudest get all the attention from the Media.

My head hurts from the ignorance of race, in fairness, the author is probably using bad info collected by Americans. Afghans are not considered Asian, geographically yes not racially. Hispanic is also not a race. Asians usually follow the rules and come to the US legally. The US also regulates the amount of Asians that come in so our country is not flooded. Illegal Latinos are a problem for a variety of reasons that have been discussed to full length. Asians for the most part try to assimilate and learn the language. They also do not organize demanding amnesty and special rights.

I will only speak Spanish and help those people when the make an honest effort to speak English. Otherwise I only answer in English. Now, there are Asians who do not speak English here, but they try and they don't expect others to know their language.

One thing I can draw from them all racists is that they are all ignorant and somewhat stupid. However, I can sense a kind of extremism and fanaticism in white racists. They certainly didn't spin this story to tell how many of these Asians are illegals. I think it's great to know what's up but when the media writes about one group of people and highlight their illegal status over others I have a problem with that. Let's tell the truth. Most of the Asians in this country are also here illegally. They just happen to fly under the radar. Also, they have major domestic issues but it goes untold because they never dial 911. There are good and bad among all groups of people.

This whole country is made up of immigrants and as the old story goes, you come here, learn the language, obey the laws and work for a living....I have no problem with it! It's when illegals come here and suck the life out of our society and then demand their right to our benefits that we all had to work hard to get gets me angry! Who knows, maybe these new Asian immigrants will someday be teaching YOU. We Americans need to follow their work ethics....Just like our relatives did decades ago when THEY came here! The only people who don't know this are small town people who see the odd legal, stereotypical token Asian here and thee–however, anyone who's ever been outside of Small Town, USA can tell you that they've probably seen a whole restaurant staff full of illegal Asians when they ordered Chinese for lunch today. A woman you know probably got a manicure/pedicure in a salon actually run by ILLEGAL VIETNAMESE not that long ago. Just because you don't see any illegal Asians when you step up to order your deep fried Snickers and Cheese Fries combo at the County Fair, doesn't mean they're not here.

starbucks, and when those people trafficking/illegal businesses get found, the people get processed and get the boot back to Vietnam or whatever country they come from. There is no protest among the Asian community about that. It's fair, they were here illegally and they got sent back when they were found out. The Latin community turns it into a civil rights issue when people from their community get sent back. "What are they going to do if they go back to Mexico, blah?"

Biggiesmalls – I don't think you grasped his point at all.

The fact is that even with the education, you have immigrants from India (who are, in large part debt free due to government paid schooling) who then come to the US and are willing to work for less than their comparably educated American counterparts (who are carrying a large debt load from school loans, etc.). The level of education is not the issue. The issue is the granting of H1B visas (purportedly to grant working status to an individual performing a job that can not be filled by a citizen).

Additionally – there are a huge number of people from India and elsewhere who came her legally initially, but have overstayed their visas and are thus illegal immigrants.

I was impressed that whenever we encountered Hispanics, regardless of age, they went out of their way to be helpful, holding open doors, giving my Mom a big smile, politely making way for her. No other group of people was so consistently thoughtful. I also work with a number of Hispanic Americans in my business, and they are unfailingly courteous, professional and warm.
