(CNN) –The immigration debate often centers on stemming the flow of people entering the United States illegally and what to do about securing borders to the south. But here's a fact that goes without much attention: Asians have now taken over Latinos as the largest group of new arrivals every year.
In 2010, 36% of new immigrants were Asians compared to 31% for Hispanics, according to a report released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center.
That's a significant change from a decade ago, when 19% of immigrants were Asians and 59% were Hispanics.
"They were already a significant part of the immigration story. It seems like in the last few years they are the most important part of the immigration story," said Karthick Ramakrishnan, a political scientist at the University of California at Riverside, and expert on Asian-American immigration and civic participation.
He said that if the trends continue, Asian-Americans will play greater roles in shaping American society and perhaps, more significantly in an election year, they will have an impact at the polls.
"This is an important moment to see immigration for what it is - that it is far more complicated and diverse than deporting illegal immigrants," Ramakrishnan said, referring to discussion sparked by President Barack Obama's policy shift last week to spare some children of illegal immigrants from deportation.
Far fewer Asian Americans enter the United States illegally than do Hispanics. The Pew survey looked at recent arrivals of people with both legal and unauthorized status, as well as those arriving with work, student or other temporary visas.
Pew's exhaustive new report on Asian-Americans found important differences between Asian-Americans and other population groups in America. It also shed light on the diversity among Asian-Americans, who sometimes cringe at the broadness of the category that covers every country of origin from Afghanistan to South Korea.
The Pew survey showed that across the board, Asian-Americans are more satisfied than any other Americans with their lives, finances and direction of the country.
They also place more value on traditional marriage, family and parenthood and usually possess a strong work ethic.
Nearly seven in 10 respondents said people could get ahead if they are willing to work hard. And 93% of Asian-Americans describe people of their origin as "very hard-working," whereas only 57% said the same about Americans as a whole.
Asian-Americans also attain college degrees (61%) at about double the rate of recent non-Asian immigrants (30%), Pew found.
"The overall picture that you get from this survey is that like immigrants throughout American history, Asian-Americans are strivers," said Pew’s Paul Taylor, who edited the study.
"But what's interesting about them are the educational credentials.” He said. “By far they are the best educated in American history."
It's not that Asian-Americans value education more.
"Everyone values education," Ramakrishnan said. "But the difference is in the sacrifices Asian-Americans are willing to make."
He said his department’s research has found instances where Asian families in Southern California will move into a much smaller house in order to move to the best school districts.
However, some Asian-Americans recognize that they may go overboard in stressing hard work.
Nearly 39% in the Pew survey said Asian-American parents put too much pressure on their children to do well in school. Think "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother," the provocative memoir by Yale Law Professor Amy Chua that sparked conversation about strict parenting.
Pew recognized the vast differences between the nationalities lumped under the U.S. Census Bureau category of Asian-American - the six major countries are China, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Vietnam and India.
New citizens: Why did you become an American?
Indian-Americans lead other groups in terms of income and education.
Seven in 10 Indian-American adults ages 25 and older have a college degree, compared with about half of Americans of Korean, Chinese, Filipino and Japanese ancestry, and about a quarter of Vietnamese-Americans.
Ramakrishnan attributed that largely to the fact that the Indians coming to America are the cream of the crop. They also have very high proficiency levels in English because of a history of British colonialism.
As a whole, Pew found Asian median income and household wealth exceeded average Americans.
Asian median annual household income is $66,000 versus $49,800 for all Americans.
Asians who came to this country are more likely than their compatriots back home to say their standard of living is better than that of their parents at the same stage of life.
But there are differences on the socioeconomic ladder.
Americans with Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese and “other U.S. Asian” origins have a higher poverty rate than does the general public, while Pew found that those with Indian, Japanese and Filipino origins have lower rates.
There were other factors that made the groups distinct.
The survey noted that Indian-Americans stand out in the personal importance they place on parenting - 78% of them said being a good parent is one of the most important things to them personally.
Korean-Americans are the most likely to say discrimination against their group is a major problem, and they are the least likely to say that their group gets along very well with other racial and ethnic groups.
In contrast, Filipinos are the most positive on interethnic and interracial relations in America.
The Vietnamese are the only major subgroup who arrived on American shores as political refugees; the others say they have come mostly for economic, educational and family reasons.
Ramakrishnan said the Vietnamese were also the only subgroup that tended to vote Republican but that is changing given anti-immigration positions and other exclusionary measures supported by some GOP lawmakers.
The American dream began later for Asian-Americans than other immigrant groups because of racial discrimination.
It was not until 1965, during the height of the civil rights movement and robust economic growth, that the United States opened its doors to immigration from all parts of the world.
The decision paved the way for Asian-Americans to grow from less than 1% of the population more than 40 years ago to nearly 6% now.
Persisting prejudice against Asians led to many communities developing in their own enclaves, Taylor said. Hence the blossoming of Chinatowns, Japantowns and Koreatowns.
But now Asian-Americans are more likely to live in mixed neighborhoods and marry out of their race.
"When newly minted medical school graduate Priscilla Chan married Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg last month, she joined the 37% of all recent Asian-American brides who wed a non-Asian groom," the Pew report said.
Between 2008 and 2010, 29% of all Asian newlyweds married someone of a different race, compared with 26% of Hispanics, 17% of blacks and 9% of whites.
Among them, Japanese had the highest rate of intermarriage and Indians had the lowest, Pew said. More than half of recent Japanese newlyweds married a non-Asian; among recent Indian newlyweds, one in eight did.
Another big distinction was with single parenthood. Forty-one percent of all American parents are single parents. Among Asians, that number plummets to 16 % and among Indians, it's 2% to 3%.
Pew spoke with 3,511 Asian-Americans between January 3 and March 27. The telephone interviews were conducted in English and seven Asian languages.
Ramakrishnan said the Asian-American population, unnoticed before in many spheres of American life, would only continue to increase its share of the spotlight.
In swing states like Virginia and Nevada, where census data now shows Asians make up 9% of the population, Asian-Americans will make a mark at the ballot box in November, Ramakrishnan predicted. Most tend to vote Democratic.
"Republicans should be wary," he said.
At the very least, Taylor said the robust Asian-American immigration is sure to redefine the debate over people coming to these shores.
"Illegal immigration has been a driver of the immigration policy debate and illegal immigration has been primarily associated with Hispanics," he said.
But now, he said, the discussion may be forced to keep up with immigration realities.
Also, I'm sure this article doesn't take into account all the illegals crossing the border since there is no way to count/quantify them. I would imagine if you could include all the illegals in these calculation, Hispanics entering this country still far exceed Asians.
Nice try to divert attention from hispanics. The reality is, perhaps more Asians enter the country that hispanics LEGALLY. That doesn't take into account ILLEGAL immigration by hispanics, which is a much higher number that we're working with here. It's not that hispanics enter this country that is the problem with most people, it's that they do it illegally when people from the rest of the world take the time and effort to file the paperwork necessary to enter this country with government approval.
quite correct-thank you
Seconded!
Asians are well educated, well mannered and don't have offspring like rabbits. They also are rarely involved in crime.
For every one Hispanic that enters the country today, you'll have 10 tomorrow. They also aren't as education-oriented, are drains on our country's resources, and are far more often involved in crime and have ties to organized crime back in Mexico.
Oh, and the Asians enter this country legally. Most Hispanics do not. But let's ignore that point for the benefit of CNN's agenda, ok?
There are more than a billion of them, so...
I don't know of any Asian on food stamps, free school lunch, free medical, and other freebies taxpayers are funding.
Never agree more. Good point....
More than 41 mio of Hispanics in USA, and only 11 mio people (Hispanics and other countries).
That means that at least 75% of Hispanics are legal residents of USA.
Latinos who are doctors, dentists, lawyers, work in an office, came with a visa, went to college, educated, dress nice, etc, is not interesting for the media, what for? To show regular people on TV?
I looks like the parents are happy she married a doctor.
Wow. It is a stock photo. The editor probably searched "asian" on the stock photo site and just put the first one that popped up on the blog. It's an Asian wedding though, come on.
Where are the numbers?
How many of each group?
The article is meaningless without numbers. It only gives percentages – of how many? Dreadful writing and editing
not actual numbers but percentages: "In 2010, 36% of new immigrants were Asians compared to 31% for Hispanics, according to a report released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center". I'd like to see an exact number myself. This is like the 100,000 jobs that are created in one month and no one can say "where" these jobs are located "what companies", etc. Do we believe the 100,000 jobs? The American Public is laughing at this administration for thinking we are dumb enough to believe all the junk that is thrown our way.
Yes, it's a little eerie to read an article about the percentages without a report of the numbers. They were probably looking right at the numbers when they wrote the article.
According to our gov't, there were 1,042,000 legal immigrants in 2010.
please get your head out of the mud and be decent. The rest of us would like a good conversation and not some potty mouth who thinks of fecal matter all the time. There's something wrong with someone who thinks this way.....
only those who have it in their heads think so 🙂
cool.......
OK, what cool aid is the writer drinking???? I'm not going to bother reading this article. Hey - these are the LEGAL quota folks entering the US LEGALLY. The hispanics are coming in in droves that cannot be counted - unless you are part of the problem and are holding the door open to them to enter the US. Try this on for size, guy.
A recommendation to all the Flamers, and to put things in perspective: As you post, identify where your family came from and what year.
Wales: 1860
Ukraine: 1905
Anyone else have the courage to speak the truth?
"...and the truth shall set you free."
most all of the American's came in legally through Ellis Island. They were charted, checked for diseases and told to learn and use English in order to survive in the new world. Unlike these new free loaders who never fought for this nation one day and will wallow in our hard fought for freedoms yet continue to use their own language and set up a nation within America. They fly their own flags and not the stars and stripes. I resent all of them.
And I'm sure the Native Americans don't care much for your ancestors that barged in, spoke their own tongue, made up their own country...
@Jason B
Which native American specifically? If you read your history many natives welcomed Europeans. Natives were part of relatively small tribes and often warred among each other. Sometimes wiping each other out, taking slaves and so on. Your natives were no nobler than the Europeans. They are yet another primitive culture conquered by a superior force. This is common theme throughout history. If you want to cry about ‘natives’ then to be far you should cry about ever culture that has been conquered in history. Also of note comparing the European colonization of the Americas to modern day immigration issue is a red herring from those with little real argument.
@ Anne
OK, OK..... your people came in before my people (I think).
As for fighting for this country...let's see.
How many in the US Congress (or Senate) or their kids have served?
I am guessing most of their ancestors came in the May Flower.
Mitt Romney has five sons. Care to tell us, how many of his sons served for the country?
Most of the kids who lost their lives in the US military, after 9/11 were between the ages of 18 and 24, and not all their families came in the first wave of immigrants. We lost of only son.
@Marinedad05
Reading comprehension is your friend. It has nothing to do with who was here first. It has to do with legal and illegal. But lets keep trying to change the argument because you have no rebuttal for that. As far as serving; A U.S. Congress (or Senate) position IS considered serving your country. Any other failed arguments you would like to try?
Aruba – 1975 – LEGALLY. (Already paid over $500,000 in income tax).
1952 Honduras, both parents from Honduras
Shutup already! All of you are immigrants!
Make me!
nice try-I was born here in 1971
You are not very bright.
Don’t worry Norman. Jake thinks he is brighter than he is. The argument anyone not of “native American’ decent has been discredited numerous times. (funny side note, ‘native Americans are actually Asian)
I would like to hear from other Californians, especially those living near borders like San Diego. Let me tell you first hand.
I used to live in these beautiful hillside community about 30 minutes from the border. It is called Jamul – hot as hell in Summer but beautiful. Before the borderpatrol set up something here, I used to see groups of illegals along the small lanes and hill sides. We used to go hiking with my German shepard. We would see clothing, water bottles, trash, etc all along these nice trails. Sometimes we would see illegals in bushes and we would never know if our lives would be in danger. We have since stopped going there a long time ago. It is just not worth it to be jumped by illegals.
How many of you have seen the morning trolley full of illegal children coming from Tijuana to go to school in San Diego?
Never mind the ones that fill our emergency rooms.
A staff of mine, wanted to recommend her best friend to work for me after high school. After a bit of probing, I was told that she is illegally here. But I said, she graduated high school with you. She smiled, yes...but she didn't get a grant to go to college.... So my hard earned tax dollars went to provide for her best hispanic friend who will soon marry a citizen so she will be legit after all.
For all you bleeding hearts who think it is so simple, making illegals , legal... you should put your money where your mouth is. You can volunteer just $100 bucks a month to support a fellow illegal until they turn 21. Let me see how many hands shoot up. Lets say, even $20 a month. So shut up already. I refuse to pay and pay again.
...you mean your tax dollars that you paid from earnings you made in a State that was taken from Mexico? Where are your ancestors from?
Tony you need to take a few history lessons. I do believe America bought those states. Read up on it and then sound ignorant again in your next post.
Tony (or is it Antonio?): .... Are you posting from Mexico? Because if you are in the U.S. I really doubt you would want any of the Mexico/U.S. border states to have remained part of Mexico – poor and underdeveloped.
Tony, as stated above California was purchased not taken. Also of note… “Mexico” was a Spanish (as in European) colony.
It is only the USA's control on who enters legally. They obviously want more Asians, because they don't like Latinos.
It is a fair game. Every nation has the same quota – whether it is Latin American nations or Asian nations. The other option is you could get a good education in the US find a job and get a work visa. There is no discrimination whether you come from Asia, Europe or Africa.
@Omen
Ask yourself why they want more Asians. Then ask yourself why they ‘don’t like’ Latinos.
asian machines
Isn't that evangelion?
What is the definition of being UmAmerican? Is it not being one of American Indians/Red Indians or not being one of those with European lineage?
What is an UmAmerican?
I think you mean native American not Indian. But I’m guessing here.
CNN posts only selective comments, what a shame on CNN
I like the fact that America is attracting asians, They can't drive as fast as I like, But they smell cleaner, are much smarter and actually can speaky english, Cool.
CNN deletes abusive racist comments like yours.
YOU CANNOT STOP ILLEGAL ALIENS EVEN IF YOU INSTALL ELECTRIC FENCE ON THE MEXICAN BORDER.
IT CAN NEVER BE STOP. GO ON WITH YOUR LIVES AND START SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE INSTEAD TRYING TO OWE A LAND THAT'S NOT EVEN BELONG TO US EXCEPT FOR THE APACHE, SIOUX, HOPIE AND OTHER 5000 INDIAN NATIONS BEFORE US STOLE THEIR LAND.
REMEMBER AMERICA IS A LAND OF FOREIGN PEOPLE.
Are you trying to say that illegals should be freely allowed into this country. Then why not get rid of visa requirements at international airports and allow everyone and anyone who wants to come in, just to be fair to everyone.
Lets give them all a welfare card and free medical service. Let our schools be filled with children of illegal immigrants courtesy of local tax payers, who can barely afford to fund their local schools now.
So wait, if Axel "conquers" it from you it'll be his from then on? I suppose someone could conquer it from him eventually too.
Sounds really stable. Not.
Jehan: that's how it's always been. There's not a single nation on Earth that wasn't taken from someone else at some point.
But Axel seems too dimwitted and too obsessed with sticking his fingers up his backside to pose much of a threat to anyone over the age of 5 or 6.
To all of you liberals who keep spouting about how the evil white men stole the mexican's and native American's land, you should have paid more attention in your anthropology class when they talked about how the "native" Americans all immigrated here from Asia. Yes, we're ALL immigrants in this country, including the "NATIVES".
Speaking of Asian immigration, why is it that you never hear all these "racists" complain about the Asian immigrants? Oh, maybe it's because Asians are productive, clean, and polite, and actually assimilate as Americans instead of hopping the border illegally and popping out as many kids as they can so they get a fatter welfare check, free school, free WIC, free health care in the ER, and their anchor babies turn into drug thugs and gang bangers.
With all the statistics in this article, funny how CNN left out the fact that 15% of Asian immigrants are illegal, vs. 45% of Mexican illegal immigrants. Guess CNN wants to keep the perception that becoming a "Legal" immigrant is too difficult.
The discrepancy there probably has more to do with the fact that it's much harder to be an illegal immigrant from Asia than it is from Mexico. You can't exactly waltz yourself across the border.
You also cannot simply waltz into Mordor.
It's no accident.
The pro-illegal lobby desperately tries to make it an issue about ALL immigration, rather than admitting that the US has the right to decide who we allow into our country. Thus the nonsense here about the number of-almost entirely LEGAL-Asian immigrants who are arriving with our permission, in compliance with our laws in contrast to the-largely ILLEGAL-immigrants from Mexico who are entering the US in defiance of our laws.
CNN is in full support of "I'll hold your hand" politics. They are the machine of dumb-down politics. This article is almost laughable in it's comparisons of immigration, a real apples-to-oranges comparison. Even if that discrepancy is hinted at in the article, it just serves the notion that liberalism will feast on whatever half-truths and skewed perceptions necessary to advance the cause of illegal and unlawful immigration. A populist agenda is rarely the correct agenda.
This only means more Asians entering U.S than Latinos legally. When you count illegal immigrates, Latinos still win by a large margin.
Hispanics can come so easily in America because their countries are closer to America compared to Asians or Europeans countries.
Yes Kevin. They come here legally because companies prefer their skills than yours or any other American. American companies persue them, offered them visas and bringing him here to fill out all the jobs that are not offered to the Americans. Remember when you applied to the high paying job and was not given to you? It was given to an Asian inmigrant for about half salary than it could have been giving to an American citizen. So now, which inmigrant has a greater negative impact in our economy?
I am a Chemical Engineer, a LEGAL immigrant, and a U.S. citizen for for over 30 years. I have always looked up to the American way of life and wanted part of the American Dream (good job, house, car, etc.), which I accomplished until a few years ago. Like so many citizens, I lost my job and house due to the recession. But the worst part is seeing non-immigrant engineers from India being brought here by engineering companies, from their Mumbai offices, to work on projects which should have been given to U.S. workers. I got another job, but at a much lower salary than I had before.
I want my government to abolish this type of "outsourcing", and I also am strongly against using my tax money to reward ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, from any country.
As far as I know the only real Americans in this great country are the American Indians.
All of us are immigrants yes YOU ARE BORN HERE BUT DID YOUR GREAT GREAT PARENTS IMMIGRATED HERE BEFORE YOU'RE BORN?
Give it a rest. If you're born here, you're an American. Period. Just how long does it take before people like you give any recognition to birthright? Even Native Americans, at some point, immigrated from somewhere else.
And the native Americans originally came from Asia....what's your point?
Yes, we emigrated here...many of us legally. That's the difference.
My great-great grandparents immigrated to the US illegally. I have absolutely no issue with legal immigration. I do, however, have a problem with illegal immigration. We have rules and processes for how you become a US citizen. Going over/under/through a fence isn't one of them.
For every illegal immigrant here in the US, there is a poor schmuck trying to immigrate legally and is left waiting. The estimates are that between one third and one half of all immigrants are illegal. As much as anyone else, those waiting to come to the US legally are hurt by illegal immigration. Its time we took a harder stance on illegal immigration and restore the laws that are currently in place (but not enforced).
My point why bash the immigrants when all of us came here via immigration
What is that Island in NEW YORK THAT EUROPEANS HAS TO REGISTER BEFORE ENTERING IN AMERICA?
So what is my point? what a stupid question the same point that you guys are doing to bash the immigrants.
I am trying to protect them or welcome them here.
That is my point.
Because Axel, there is a big difference between legal and illegal. If you don't understand that we can't help you.
When Europeans came to this country, they came in legally. And so are Asians. And they did not go on welfare or try to get free medicare. Legal immigrants are NOT allowed to use welfare or medicare. What do illegal immigrants do these days. They take advantage of the system. That is where the problem is AXEL.
Er, that should read that my great-great grandparents came to the US LEGALLY.
I taught in a community college for forty years and can say that Asian immigrants are more like the pioneers and patriots who built this country than any other ethnic group arriving today. They are disciplined, hard working, ethical, have strong family values, and are respectful and appreciative of what this country offers them. I saw Asian kids start out in a course barely able to speak English and end up the year fluent in the language with perfect spelling. I've never heard a recording telling me to "push 2" to speak in Korean or Thai, nor have I ever seen the signs in the hardware store translated into an Asian language. There are certain other minorities in this country who could learn a lot from them.
What you said. Good job, Joe!
Asians are 6% of US population but commit .0000002% of the crimes. enuff said. while other racial groups NUMBERS are significantly, significantly, significantly higher. it has to do with family values and most importantly of all, SELF RESPECT.
Asians has no time to think about racism, to be illegal or nor, they don't think about their neighbors dog barking all the time.
They don't mind someone hit in the subway accidentally and expect that person to say sorry to them.
Asian has no time to fool around and make their life miserable. They come here in America to work and to have better future
we don't have to move around to another house because A BLACK MAN just move in across the street.
They don't move because to try to avoid the black people like white people do.
AXEL, People don't move out because a black man moved in. That's nonsense. People move out when the neighborhood becomes unsafe due to rising crime or other quality of life issues.
Why do you say that? What's your point?
I have had the same experience, but god forbid you say it out loud to anyone.
Mike C is off his medication today. He forgot to take Xanax, Adderall, and Clonazepam. He has these moments of "Voices in his head."
TO ALL MORONS!!!!
THE STATISTICS COMES FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT – THAT ARE LEGAL IMMIGRANTS.
THE NUMBER OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS COMING FROM MEXICO, FREIGHT OR VIA TOURIST VISA ARE UNKNOWN.
I SAY IT AGAIN PERCENTAGE OF ILLEGAL ALIENS ARE UNKNOWN NUMBERS.
NOBODY KNOWS HOW MANY CHINESE OR OTHER RACE ARE HERE ILLEGALLY. PLEASE PUT THAT IN YOUR NAIVE MIND.
I think the reporter of this article, Moni Basu MISSED the point entirely. The current argument is ILLEGAL immigration. As in, parents came to US illegally (a crime against our laws) and had children who are illegal.
Why is she changing the direction and dynamics of this conversation. Anyone can write an article but please keep on topic and focus on the problem. To deviate so sorely by not talking about the core of the problem – ILLEGAL immigration shows how you are willing to move the conversation as usual so as not to focus on the real issue – illegal immigration.
Is anyone willing to guess how much more unemployment is going to go up ? How many more people will be applying for welfare, unemployment, etc etc.. It is not just an issue of saying to these under 30 years old... oh, sure, you can be legal for 2 years...as long as you vote for Uncle Obama. What happens after this two years ? Are Hispanics so blind and gullable that they don't see that this is all for their votes. If I were Hispanic, I would be very much insulted to be used for two years and then tossed under the bus.
But people's realities, including the one that wrote the above article, their realities is what they perceive it to be.
The pro-illegal lobby has no valid arguments to make in support of their agenda, so they deliberately attempt to confuse LEGAL immigration - people who have complied with the laws of the US and are entering the US with our permission - with ILLEGAL immigrant criminals.
Note also their latest "tug at the heartstrings" attempts to redefine the debate as "Why are you being so mean to those poor children?"
Oopsie! I guess the batsh!t right wingers are building a multi-billion dollar 'border fence' in the wrong place. Okay, all together now, pick up that fence and swim out into the Pacific...
Actually we are pleased to have a group of peole enter, who will be an asset rather than a detriment. This deflates you race card crap doesn't it.
People sneaking across the border are illegals. Asians are coming to this country legally. There is a big difference.
Pro-illegal alien nuts like "Transorbital" have no valid arguments, so they attempt to change the debate from illegal immigration to "racism!" and "anti-immigrant!" nonsense.
You know, there are many people who arrive in this country legally, on a work or student visa. Then they overstay that visa, and boom, they're illegal immigrants. Asians, Africans, Europeans, South and Central Americans....all classes and colors are here illegally.
Explain to me again why conservatives would want to build a fence to prevent Asian immigrants? You know, the ones that have traditional family values, work ethic, learn english, participate in the betterment of society and have the lowest rate of crime of any group?
this story is blatantly racist the writer has only stereotypical concepts to draw conclusions on. misses the point of illegal vs legal immigration completely, and needs to expand their knowledge and thought processes
"Far fewer Asian Americans enter the United States illegally than do Hispanics. " – Now, they wouldn't be Asian American if they have never been here in the first place. Secondly, you just proved our point – they are not overtaking Mexico's bathtub drain that is flowing into our country. Little harder to cross an ocean than a river, don't you think?
Humans came out of eastern Africa. Moved east into Asia, the Middle East, and eventually into Europe. They also crossed the land bridge into what is now the United States and South America. Folks, we are all related. We are all sisters and brothers. Our hair, eyes and skin have changed according to our forefathers travels. Arguing about if your Asian, "white", "black", Mexican is a bit useless.
Um, no they didn't, but you keep living that dream.
Oh ok, so let's hear your theory. (This out to be good) LoL
Try making that argument after illegally immigrating into Mexico across their southern border and see how well that works for you.
You've been brainwashed by your Liberal teachers. We did not all originate from Africa. That is BS. Its tought in our schools to combat racism. What a shame our education system has become.
While it may be plausible that we did not originate in Africa, we did originate somewhere. What is important is that we spread out across the globe and our skin color, hair, body changed. What is your theory on this subject? I would love to hear your "theory" as well. Do you have one? Or do you just disagree with no answer to this subject?
Eric, you seem to be the only one on this thread who knows what they are talking about. Education is good, isn't it. it teaches one not to hate.
I'm am AMERICAN-AMERICAN as well. BORN AND RAISED! what doesnt Obama understand about the word "ILLEGAL". ????????? live here 2 years or 50 years, you are "ILLIEGAL" in this country. PERIOD.
That's ok when you consider Bush didn't know the meaning of the word "LEGAL", so I guess it evens out.
Blakey: If you are claiming to be from the United States, could you at least learn to type? You are embarassing the rest of us.
They subsidize your economy. From your restaurants to lawn mowing to construction.
Please STOP the hypocrisy, mr american american.
Let's not forget how they "subsidize" our schools with children who can't speak English and whose expenses are paid for out of the pockets of citizens' and LEGAL residents' taxes.
They "subsidize" our emergency medical services by using hospital ERs for every medical need. Someone else picks up the tab of course.
Why, they even help subsidize the auto repair shop down the street that fixed the damage the illegal did to my car. Oh, wait, that was MY money... Well, the illegal alien who ran into me was at least subsidizing the fake driver's license and fraudulent insurance card industry.
WHAT???? ILLEGAL ALIENS subsidizing these industries???? Now that is HYPOCRISY! All the illegal aliens holding these jobs do is hire only relatives and others like themselves, who then send most of their ill-begotten pay back to their country.
in 1981, my dad and mom got approval for the US govt to come to the us on a green card , they worked hard and continue to work hard. When they were allowed to become citizens they did that. How are they illegal
He is talking about those who come in here illegally without any papers. Not those like your parents who are here legally.
Hate and racism is a mental illness and there are a lot of people that need help.
Bully Syndrome: Some Americans have elected their conservatives in Congress who have created all kinds of laws with loopholes, which allow companies to outsource their high-tech work to China and India. They feel powerless and cannot complain to their elected fellows, even though they know their jobs are being sent abroad. So, what do they do? They bully the poor immigrants from the south. Even when they know this group is their only salvation, because they come here to work cheap and improve small business owned by Americans.
possibly the least reasoned post of the day. Did you actually read the article? So jobs are being outsourced to India and China, yet those groups make up the largest group of people entering the US and doing better financially and educationally than any other group? Before you post, try putting aside your illegal alien apologies and look at reality.
Another very angry bully!
Yup – but they just hate getting called out.
total BS story just another fine example of mass media trying to divert attention and or sidestepping the issue in order to set precedence what’s next mass media lobbing congress to make the term illegal immigration a volition of someone civil liberties???
I am a Chinese who came here legally in 2006 as a graduate school student. I got a job in 2010 as a financial analyst and am currently holding a H1B short term worker visa. My company hasn't file green card application for me yet as the federal government has strict regulations on green application from skilled workers after the economic crisis. Even if my company filed for green card application for me right now, I will be waiting for another 4-5 years, which means I have to wait more than 10 years from the date i came here to live in the US permanently. However, it is much easier for those illegal immigrants to get green card. Sad.
You should marry an American then submit your AOS yourself.
Why bother getting legal permanent residency? Now you can just stay here past your H1 expiration and you won't be deported. Eventually you will be granted permanent status. Oh wait, you are actually an educated person who followed the laws, my bad. Americans apparently care more about the illegals in the country than the people who follow the laws.
All Men Are Created Equal.
And women??
Neat.
DEPORT ILLEGALS!!!!
I think this is either deliberate or ignorant blurring of legal and illegal immigration. The term "illegal" is only used 4 times, yet "immigration" is used 12. When it discusses rates of immigration, it never cites rates of illegal immigration or racial percentages.
I have no choice because of deliberate or negligent reporting but to make my own assumption about the rates. So I assume the rates are about legal immigration. Which does not affect the argument or attention of those who respect and honor legal immigration regardless of race.
This article is based on perceived racism against Latinos. That perception may be true. The truth of it is immaterial to the argument. It argues that the attention on illegal immigration should be at least shared with Asians, not just Latinos. Why? Because immigration is now largely (36% vs 31%) Asian. But the premise is flawed.
Provide percentages of illegal entry and presence. That is far more relevant in this discussion. I'm going to save this article as an example of media agendas and faulty logic.
My thoughts exactly. Very misleading!!!
I agree. The debate has been about illegal immigration. If we want to start talking about the problems of all immigration, I am afraid that somewhat more than 95% of us are going to have to start packing.
The "blurring" is very deliberate.
The pro-illegal lobby can't win using the facts. They need to confuse the matter with nonsense like "unless you're a Native American you're an immigrant!" or playing the "shell game" with legal versus illegal immigrants until the public can't tell the difference between those people who came here legally and those who are criminals defying our laws and trespassing in our country.
Someone asked on this forum how does Asian Americans serve America? They just fill the gap that Americans have left in the need for highly educated people in the field of science and technology. Of course, the whites are still leaders as they hold most of the "capital". But the new generation of Americans are not filling this gap so the immigration of Asians is important to drive innovation and growth. I think if they are stopped, America will found legging behind as the gap becomes wider and wider in terms of demand for highly educated people in IT and R&D. Besides that they are creating jobs by opening small businesses. As the researches show, the rate of acquiring a degree is double among Asians, it's Americans who are losing this opportunity rather than the Asians taking it. If Americans focus on their education, immigration will reduce.
I've worked with many asians however, if you get to know them you will find out many will tell you the pressure in their own countries was extremely stressful for their children to perform at excellence! At all times! Almost demanded. The children have to spend many hours studying, not playing, not socializing, or learning simply to grow up as a child, doesn't happen, or allowed! Some came here to get away from it. You can only push your child just so much. Yes, school is great, education is great, money is great, but there is more to life than...money! Another thing this article does not touch, is the isolation of Asians, most do not mingle with other races, nor have many friends outside their own race. How many 'others' do you see in China, or Vietnam, or Korea? In America its at least becoming more the 'norm', however, they still prefer their own race. I think it comes down to 'trust'. Ask yourself how many asian friends do you have? It will serve us all to have friends of all backgrounds, we can learn this way from each other. This is one thing I loved about living in Los Angeles..
How can Asians serve US? We pay income taxes, property taxes, spend money to stimulate economy, and donate money to charity.
"...the gap becomes wider and wider in terms of demand for highly educated people in IT and R&D..."
BS. Conservatives offer tax benefits to corporations who outsource American jobs to India. The gap is more than filled by cheap labor.
Illegal immigration or immigration is not conservative or liberal problem. It's an economic problem.
They're here only because the money is good. Don't expect allegience to America, many will remain in their closed ethnic group. Yep, the American Dream..
You cannot change your ethnic group. Are you suggesting that they should try to have some type of surgery to modify their appearance? Just a weird comment.
I believe the point he was trying to make was one of cultural integration. Many immigrants move to the US and live in tightly-knit groups of others just like them and refuse to adopt the local language or customs. Think Chinatown, to a degree. I have no problem with immigration, but you should probably try to adapt to your new surroundings instead of limiting yourself to only people who are just like you. That goes for born and raised Americans as well. Just as an example, I had several Asian friends when I was a kid who would have "Asian-only" birthday parties. If you weren't Asian, you weren't invited.
By the same logic, you should have adopted American Indian way of life? Who are you to decide what kind of socialization one should have and why is it the point of discussion? Is your way of life better than mine or vice versa? Why immigration are expected to integrate as you stuck to you way of life for 200+ years? This is a ridiculous way of looking at other culture. Instead learn to appreciate their culture instead of crying that they don't integrate and blah blah blah. What efforts do you make to befriend them if ever? Do you welcome them with open arms so that they can feel comfortable befriending you? From what you are saying I am sure you don't believe them to be part of the culture and you sound very unwelcoming of them and yet you expect them to mingle with you. That just sounds too ridiculous and ironic!
Hey hemchandra, America need more people like you. America is a great nation. We always the pioneer of the world. Instead of complaining about loosing jobs to immigrants (legal or not), we should be focus on sharpen our skills thru educations. The world is changing if we don't change with it we will be left behind. We have to learn to adapt, don't just sit there and complain cause it ain't gonna change. If your skill no longer needed learn another skill. Businesses are there to make a profits not charity, don't expect them to save your job. Its capitalism people. Survivors of the fittest.
I actually find your comment to be rather offensive.
I mean this is all fine and dandy, but what percentage of Asian Americans are serving in the military ?
All im saying is not all of Asian American immigrants are academically 'gifted'. There are some Asian Americans like me who, came too the US to be a firefighter , to be a cop, to be in the military and this present system is so education/ corporate based that , i have had to live some one else's (parents) dream of being in the IT industry, just so that i get a chance to serve if I get a green Card. Unlike most immigrants, i believe I must fight for this country to earn my right to live here . Please help make a system where community/military service must also be utilized instead on just education. A country needs academics and service people. one with out the other is a recipe for disaster. Please Support the MAVNI, (Military Accession Vital To National Interest ) program and motion for more programs like this.. Did the Irish Italian community not enlist in the Civil war ?
As I was scanning the article over, I was thinking that there should be a military requirement too. I had no idea that there was an organization that focused around it.
The 442nd Regiment is the highest decorated combat battalion and has the highest casualty.
There are enough uneducated duds out there to join the police and the military. The country needs more engineers and doctors. An engineer can be a better patriot than a soldier. Please wake up.
Being not very academically sound does not mean , one is a dud. And it takes a pair to go into combat its about sacrifice and courage and honor. While you may not understand, but when you or your family needs protection from criminals its the " Duds " as you call them, step in and save your wife and kids, when its a fire you dial 911 and a team is ready to enter a burning building for you , all 'duds' you say, when 9/11 happens these 'duds' as you call them are first in to fight on your behalf. Some of them even control large warships, submarines, nuclear weapons, fighter jets , helicopters. The people whom you call 'duds' might not publish academic papers and earn six figure paychecks and live down town , but they are for a reason known as 'America's finest' . if they are 'duds' then you are a nerd, and no wonder your wife cheats on you with these 'duds'. After all she needs a man sometimes. 🙂
Some engineers are soldiers... and soldiers have their role and serve a great role in you enjoying your right to post on this website. You should respect the serving men and women. It's not an easy life.
A lot are in the military. The Navy has more filipino's than any other ethnic group
Fillipinos are part of an exclusive US Fillipino PACT that any fillipino can join the US Armed Services. Thats easy for them. Just enter a recruiting center.
Your observation is true to a certain extent and is also true with all ethnic groups, not just Asian or Asian-American. British-Americans used to thumb their noses at Irish-Americans, who thumbed their noses at Italian-American and other Slavic-Americans.
However, overall I see Asian-Americans, particularly the first generation immigrants, in general have more warm feelings to each other than they do with whites and that comes from their own experiences of being prejudiced and marginalized by Euro-America.
The secret of our success is, we were willing to eat ramen noddle for 6 years while we were in college and worked hard to pay off the college tuition.
everybody does that.
Dang! You could afford ramen?!?!?
that was priceless...with humor...but its true!
I couldn't agree more!! Asians are very determined and hard working and place high value on family and tradition. By the way....Republicans have no problem with people coming here legally, they are only concerned with the ones who come here illegally. I married an asian woman and brought her here legally after a 5 year courtship and i hyave a lot more respect for someone who jumps through all the hoops to come here the correct way versus someone who dodges the system.
If you don't like white people or your family members to marry them, then maybe you should have thought twice about coming to a place with 200+ million of them.
I think this article is very inspiring. I know many Asian Americans who work very hard and have achieved high levels in our society. The thing I notice is that many asian parents push their children to work hard and excell academically. No excuses! They believe in their children and expect the best from them. I do the same with my kids. I do not accept anything but the best from them and I expect them to push hard to achieve. My son struggled with algerbra and I would not let him give up. I pushed him and stayed on his back and he pulled up his grade from a failing grade at the beginning of the year to a B-. He may not have have gotten an A but that is okay. He got the point that hard work, pushing yourself and not quitting pays off. Now he gets the picture and is MOTIVATED. The four "A"s and two "B"s he got in his other classes he intends to pull to straight As next year. It's all about the parents believing in their kids and not accepting anything but the best!
I like Asian folks. Definitely more than those crazy bible belt folks. I hated the way the looked at me and judged me when I never showed up in church.
I am a school board member and we recently did a survey of our kids. Children of Asian descent spent an average of 10 ADDITIONAL hours per week on homework, read an additional 25 books per year, and watched 2 additional non-fiction videos per month than children of other ethnicities. Many parents paid for extra tutoring, even if the child was doing well in school. The children said education was celebrated in their home with the entire family emotionally supporting the success of the child.
self-reported, right? okay then.
Mayby so but dont get all warm and fuzzy over statistics composed by a sociologist. Theyre usually manipulated at best. They read more books (not necessarliy age appropriat) to study engilsh. They do so to become more self sufficiant unlike other groups that come to the U.S.They spend longer hours doing homework with the hopes of mastering a subject not mealy just passing it.You on the other hand have responded with a bias flawed analogy. This country is number one.Get it? Numero Uno because we can out do others at will. Thats OUR mentality. Its uncommon with most of the world. Thats why people come here. We do it BETTER.We have more education than we need
Honestly, there is very little this country is still "number one" at, aside from military spending and the size of our prison populations of course.
One will soon get sick of white bread! One needs variety in life, otherwise they will grow up not fitting in to society, they will not even know how to play with each other or communicate. I have a asian male friend who had everything done for him, the poor soul can't even make a decision, has no clue how to make one. Why, His parents or gparents made all his decisions for him..not a good thing...one must have balance in life..back to white bread comment.
Asians tend to assimilate more which is traditionally valued in America. Also, they bring waaay better food than most other immigrant groups. I dunno about you, but I'd much rather have a nice bowl of pho than tacos al pastor.
In a completely unrelated story the United States educational ranking has gone up in math and science. The crime rate is trending down – The average family household income has also gone up. This has nothing to do with Asians vs hispanic immigrants, right?
exactly. very unscientific in that you didn't control for anything.
More CNN race baiting. yay.
The topic is ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.
But hey, yea, lets distract people by saying "there are more asian immigrants than hispanic immigrants"
THEY ARE NOT COMPARABLE BECAUSE THE ASIANS COME HERE...
dum dum dum
wait for it
legally.
There are a lot of Asians working at CNN... sorry...
The topic is whatever they want it to be numbnuts. Read the headline – it doesn't say illegal immigration is the topic. Get bent ya knob.
and who would do yards and build our roads? Talk about taxes going through the roof. Bunch of white guys demanding $40 an hour to do roadwork. A car's registration would have to be $2000 a year!
Really, come to Texas. We have a state full immigrant and first generation Hispanic doctor, lawyers, CPA's, teachers and every other profession. Our booming oil business, agriculture, mining and housing couldn't survive without our Hispanic citizens (I'm not fooled that some are illegal). Oh, and the best Mexican restaurants in the world (about every 50 feet). You don't want yours, we'll take more.
I totally agree! I love Texicans!
I am Asian, I came here legally to go to college. I worked full time to pay off my college bills, and after 6 years got my Bachelor degree. When I graduated, I got a job offer from an American company.
If you work hard and dedicated your life to the life of excellence, no matter what race you are, you can do great things in your life. If you want something good happen in your life, you gotta be willing to work hard to get it.
As an Asian American, Hard work is very much valued in the Asian American Community. Were not lazy like everyone else.
To be fair, I do see a lot of Asians at the medical library. But they are all sleeping. I think they count that as studying time though, because they will then tell me they studied for ten hours. They tend to score the same though.
The inventors of learning by osmosis!!
That's why in Asia, Hard work is an ethic that Parents teach because most of them were raised on farmlands in China, Vietnam, Laos or cambodia
It's why American's don't get it. Hard work dose pay off and Asian's know it all too well. Also they know a sense of community and Family first. They know that their family will always come first.
Too lazy to use an apostrophe to spell "we're" correctly though! I kid, I kid! That said, I have met plenty of lazy Asians.
And you wonder why your job got outsourced to countries like the Philippines or even to China
Well at least the Asian population is here to work and better themselves on their own. Its the Hispanics that are here to collect the free hand outs while not bothering to learn to speak read or understand the language of the land.
I get your point, but did we completely forget the "other" race that collects handouts and is on welfare?? Or have we just given up on that side?? LOL
The "other" race? Oooh, you mean the poor white trash! I get it now.
I think we have to be fair in here, The mexicans coming here are mainly made up of tribal folks. Unfortunately, the g'ment of Mexico deliberately refuse to educate them, or any other benefit that you and I have. China and other Asian countries to have some sort of education for all their folks. Its the tribal folks coming here to the USA. Personnally, I think Mexico is making a hugh mistake by not educating them, teaching them skills etc. Have you seen the western part of Mexico..not much there when there should be growth in those areas, contributed by these very folks!
I don't have a problem with the whites, asians, hispanics, or even native americans! .....
You only qualify for state aid if you are an American citizen. The Hispanics that are getting funds from the government are legal citizens. A different issue is ER medical attention. Every civilized country offers free emergency medical attention to those who cannot afford it, regardless of their race. It is an issue of basic Human Rights, although not everybody believes in them. The same would happen if an uninsured American (there are a lot, look at the statistics) goes to Mexico and has some medical emergency. They would receive medical attention too.
Try the Indian or Korean dry cleaners down the street. I doubt you're going to find a white-owned dry cleaners since the work is so menial and the hours are long. You definitely won't find... ok, going to stop here. I almost pulled in another race discussion 🙂
Uh, Asian people are for Obama's immigration law too.
I'm asian american born in texas(yeah i know), but many of us are for the immigration law because we have more of a direct experience with how tough it is to live here based on our accounts with family and friends.
There are ALOT of asians living in the US that are not legal. More than you think. Yes, I'm korean american, but I don't think we are better than Lations. We should be on the same platform.
Also, Most asian people are know are more sympathetic to Lations on the immigration issue because many of us have family who were in the same exact position.
Large Hispanic and Asian populations here in VA. I can tell you I feel very sympathetic towards Asian immigrants. yes, we are in the same situation, and I try to support their businesses, causes, etc.
Legal vs Illegal ... if you don't know that difference you should not be writing an article on immigration.
This is a great trend. An influx of hardworking people, who value education, and have strong core families, is just what this country needs.
Until we get overthrown by China! And, they won't have to shoot one bullet either! Whose the dumb ones now? Lots of Asian folks here already and will be ready to take over our g'ment once china overthrows us. I like the Chinese folks, but don't underestimate them..after all, China is Communist and this is how these folks were raised. Don't get to smudge in here we owe them trillons of dollars. Obama who?
"Can we all just get along"
Article fails to mention that Asians are the most materialistic, prejudice, and stuck up people in the U.S. I know, I'm Asian. My grandma always freak out when a black UPS man drops a package off. Seriously.
Haha. That is funny.
This is true... we like our BMW's...
Again, another unfounded, uneducated over-generalization. Your grandmother freaked out when an African American UPS man delivered the package because she is not used to seeing other races. Any race who is not familiar with another race tends to freak out. It has more to do with familiarity, rather than race.
Not true. Racism is taught and learned. Kids seem to have no problem playing with other kids who are different. Justifying racism is disgusting IMO.
Really! She is too isolated then...take her down to the local senior community senior so she can start mingling with other races......
CNN is becoming the TNN Trolling News Network or the RNN the Reality News Network.
Because you can't stop reading
This article is confusing. From the tag line, one would think the journalist was stating Asians are the new largest group of Illegal immigrants.
You expected something more logical or substantial from CNN?
The question we should always be asking ourselves is how does importing 431,000 Asians in one year serve the interests of America and Americans? If we are not asking this question of every immigrant from whereever they come, then immigration is out of control. 431,000 is one good sized American city...in just one year. No country on earth takes on numbers like these...so, why should we unless our 300 millions just cannot move forward without them – but a case needs to made. We should not just sit back and let it happen and then wake up one day and find we are 600 millions or one billion unhappy, ununited citizens of a country with little resemblance to the country we once knew and swore to defend.
If, on average, they're more educated than you, then that's why we took them. Because we need them.
Ahhh, the persistently fearful that America is turning a different skin color, with different accent and strange gastronomy... Now tell that to our native Americans!
You make some good points. If we're NOT United, then we're for ourselves as a race. Lots of races come to our country now NOT to be United, but to become a power within their own race. I don't think a lot of Mexicans particularly like the United States, they prefer Mexico, will they eventually assimulate..I don't know. If a country isn't United then the country will be divided! And, I think this is the way United States is headed. I think Mexicans want USA to become an extension of Mexico. (and it was for a few years) However, they forget the Spaniards actually brought the chickens corn and horses, not them! They built most of the adobe homes, not them..No, most coming are not of Spaniard descent so don't give me that logic. If I was to move to China, or Mexico I would have to learn the language and NOT get benefits, its an absolute! Hopefully, we will all unite in the end, bez we can learn from each other, problems is they tend to isolate into their own communiteies. Parts of LA you would think was Monterrey, and I don't mean california!
We definitely don't marry Hmong.
Don't worry about it. We have standards.
I wasn't worried.
If you knew anthing about American history, you would know WE are home!!! You're the new comerrrsss.... Oh, and the by the way, do your children a favor, teach them Spanish! They're going to need it to survive...
I see no mention in this article about many Asian immigrants are ILLEGAL immigrants? I would bet that it is no where near the number of illegal South American immigrants.
Correction: I meant "how many "Asians are ILLEGAL immigrants compared to South American immigrants.
Mexico is in North America. Did you know that?
Sadly, many think that "south" of the US is South America...that goes to tell you how much we need to catch up in education so we can compete with (eiiik!) foreigners.
I get the biggest charge out of people saying 'we're Americans!"...REally...lets see we have North America,South America, Central America..we're all Americans...You should say United States of America, or USA. Its not really south americans coming rather central americans coming here. and alot of them do not consider themselves Mexicans (ie not Mexico) South Americans ie., Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru are Latino...not Hispanic, nor Mexicans..they'll tell you in a second too.
Marion, South Americans tend to be the legal Latinos. Mexico and some Central American countries like Guatemala have the highest numbers of illegal Latinos.
Has anyone ever seen the asian shuffle? They run everywhere but try to make it look like they are walking!
"It's not that Asian-Americans value education more.
'Everyone values education,' Ramakrishnan said. 'But the difference is in the sacrifices Asian-Americans are willing to make.' "
Does the author know what the word "value" means? If you're willing to give up more for something, it's pretty hard to argue that you don't value it more...
No they value it more. Every single Asian parent I have met (hundreds) always thinks their kid is going to go to harvard medical school. I talked to one person in China who said his kid goes to Princeton, but the kid was still a toddler. It is very, very different.
so when are korean-americans or any other asians going to finally have a spokeperson in the US? we obviously have a voice internationally, just none here in the US. to not have a public voice, but still be able to come up in American society, continuously raising the bar, shows how strong we can be. imagine if we had someone that might speak on our behalf more often. it's ignorant to believe asians don't face any sort or racism that ridicules us. and up until this article, our voice has pretty much been ignored. thank you.
Well said.
Irvine has its first Korean-American mayor, there many Asians within the California legislature. As a Hispanic immigrant in northern VA, I support as many Asian-run businesses as possible because they also cater to Hispanics; it's a symbiotic relationship and we had faced similar living situations. It's only a matter of time until Asians gain larger representation. They will have my support!
BIG DEAL!! The problem is Illegal immigration.
The Asians are for the most part entering the country legally. No one has a problem with legal immigration.
The author of this story fails to point out the distinction. Lame.
I'd love to see JUST ONE writer who ever makes that distinction when talking about immigrants. I'd love to see just ONE STATISTIC about the legal or illegal status of ALL IMMIGRANTS. Perhaps then we can have an honest discussion of the issue by those supporting South American ILLEGAL immigrants.
I have saying this would happen for years. It used to drive my college friends insane who insisted that I hated Latinos despite being the only one who actually a Latino.
Now lets see if the same activist who screamed that Americans should learn Spanish will scream they should learn Korean or Mandarin. I doubt it. Time for everyone to learn English before we become Babel.
Latinos, especially the ones who had the opportunity to live in a Latin American country, are usually the harshest critics against illegal immigration. The behavior are some are a huge drag on the community. The illegal supporters in this country are usually the most ignorant about Latino culture and history, reading their comments often makes me cringe because they are driven by emotion not knowledge.
Come to Alhambra, CA where there are tons of Asian gangs. The Wa Ching or whatever it's called. They also love to eat the ducks in the park. No joke. And keep your dogs indoor too.
Ok...was that a cheap plug for your website? Dishonor!!! 🙂
You know what that means ladies and gentlemen, a lot more Chinese food stores will be opening.
That's because Chinese "Americanized" food has become too "Americanized". I grew up in the north and never in my life did I see peas and carrots as an ingredient in chinese dishes (although the Chinese restuarants up there are now doing it too). Or white rice with some soy sauce thrown on it and calling it "fried rice". I can say the same thing for "Pizza" restaurants....or what they pass off as Italian "Pizza".
please explain to me how the southwest United States rightfully belongs to the mexicans. I am sorry but they lost the war fair and square to a far superior army just like the indians did. how is it the the United States belongs to everyone else but Americans?
By Americans you mean the native Indians who were killed by immigrants who came from Europe correct?
Well, just to be politically incorrect – the "native Americans" also immigrated here from across the Bering Straight, by best estimates. It appears that there were no 'native' humans on this continent. They just got here first.
No, I think he means the American Indians who came across the land bridge from Asia who were killed by Americans who were born here too.
You mean the natives who crossed the landbridge from asia and populated the Americas?
U know its actually a fact most immigrants actually lived in complete peace together. But then bad seeds came (on both sides over time). They didn't just come here and start exterminating them. Not trying to deny your point; you're right. Just many people don't know the truth to it. Thats like African Americans thinking they are the only slaves in history. (when they themselves oppressed and started that behavior themselves...) On op of that its the Whites that then get blamed when the Spanish started the importing. In reality none of that matters though now....
At one point many places on Earth changed "ownership" ... there is no "rightful" claim only legal claim right NOW.
Some journalist at CNN maintain that all of the America's are America and that they were here first ... therefore it's theirs ... ridiculous reasoning. The Southwest is a part of the United States just as an country with a defined border is part of that country ... people who say otherwise are ignorant, argumentative or stup!d
Without these so called non-white garbage you mentioned, How you gonna feel superior?
Hightest income gets better mileage and keeps the economic engine cleaner...
haha
I've just checked. They only did that to yours. Don't know why.....
I read a lot of comments here. What people do not understand is highly educated people who used to start business here are going back to their own countries and starting up businesses there. They do not want to stay in America for people like some of you here – they are the folks taking jobs away from America because they can now do it better and cheaper in other countries. You cannot legally force businesses to stay in certain county and hire certain group of folks. The correct immigration policy should be to bring highly skilled enterpreneurs to US so they can invent and start the business here – thus generate employment here. I think the debate should be about illegal immigrants and how much money our government is spending to support them.
Obama is trying to pass tax incentives for people who hire domestic workers because BUSH did the opposite and gave tax incentives to people who out source. Vote for Obama please.
Your comment is beyond idiotic. The tax burden placed on America's small and large businesses is horrible. We have the largest corporate tax rate on Earth. That is why talent leaves this country – in order to achieve more fair taxation. You obviously do not run a small business. Obama has done nothing to help us. I think you meant to say tax credits (what is a tax incentive anyway?). Tax credits do not grow business. All they do is delay the tax payment to the next fiscal year. I suggest you go take a class in business or get your MBA. You have much to learn. Your obviously a political radical who looks through the lens of partisanship and do not engage is any independent or critical thinking for yourself. Good luck in life. You'll need it.
Chinese want to stay.
Well there are A LOT more accidents on the road these days.....hmmmmm.
I am not surprised. From my experience, the Asian-Americans I met in America are all cream of the crop. They are nothing short of the best of the best Asians. If it's not Ivy League undergrad, then it's doctors, dentists, engineers, Silicon Valley or accounting. Of course there are many Asians who don't do as well as their cohorts but really it's rare to find any Asian-American on food stamps except of course refugees. But how the children of these refugees will develop we won't find out for another few years. Having lived in both Canada and the US, I find that the Asian-Americans tend to speak better English and even the older grandmas and grandpas speak better English than their counterparts in the ethnic ghettos of Toronto, Markham, Scarborough. These Asian-Americans tend to be more integrated into the mainstream American culture while retaining the ideals and values of the general Asian culture of working hard, saving at an early age and respect for older generations. This is great news. Proud of my Asian brothers and sisters.
lol at accounting.
I agree. Look at Spelling Bees – 7 out of past 10 are Indian Americans.
A thoughtful post and I agree.
I am a Canadian of Chinese descent and my wife is UK born and is of East Indian descent. We are middle class and all of our free time and our financial resources are used for our boys' education. We want our kids to represent the best of Asian traits and break that stereotype that still exists in the world.
I agree..........and...........and..............your food is better! I do agree, just making a joke.
While I agree that most Asian-Americans are definitely above average, I wouldn't say all of them. Being in a Computer Science department, I've seen a lot of Asian immigrants, especially in the graduate program. Many of them are extremely intelligent and hardworking... others of them I wondered how on earth they ever got an undergraduate degree before they came here.
Karen, Although I generally agree with your statement for young Asians, majority of older Asians dont really speak much English. Go to the nearest China town and you will see. Toronto, Vancouver, Richmond, San Francisco, New York, etc I have been to all. The only issue i find with Asians is hygiene, politeness and cleanliness 🙁 Seems like younger asians are much better. Btw. I am married to an Asian.
And ... that is exactly the kind of people who will take away jobs from "Americans". Instead, the guys from the south come here to do cheap labor and help grow small business owned by Americans!
I can only speak for San Francisco and NYC and many MANY older Chinese speak no English.
We're #1, we're #1!!! :p
This pretty much exemplifies how racist people are on the basis of skin color – why doesn't anyone talk about the Asians coming here, it's always about the Mexicans. Mexicans are stealing the best janitor jobs, while Asians and Indians are taking your kid's spots in universities...
Mass immigration is an albatross on US Citizen tax payers, regardless of their national origin
because PEOPLE ARE UNEDUCATED...
No one has a problem with Mexicans or Asians coming here legally. It's the ones coming here illegally and not paying taxes that are the problem. The ones who are "taking your kids' spot at universities" came here legally, are usually hard-working, and often stay here after graduation and both pay taxes and help to keep the U.S. on top in terms of tech talent. If an Asian kid is working harder than your kid, that's your kid's problem.
Actually, wouldn't more Asians in America be a GOOD thing? What we DON'T want are the other immigrants right?
Am I missing something here?
It's not politically correct to say but...I'm with you on that one. While I have some sympathy for folks who want to get out of the Third World crapholes they live in, they bring all their dysfunctions and problems with them. They may not have the same values or behaviours that we're used to in North America. I'll admit, I'd rather have a bunch of uber-studious Asians to provide a good role model for spoiled American kids than people who move here & think it's still okay to perform acts of violence or steal or can't understand why they have to put up with women's rights and gay marriage or unions.
And who exactly are you talking about? You seriously aren't taking the actions of some illegal immigrants and attatching it to the entire Latino population in the world? I am assuming your talking about Latinos , if your not then fine (insert minority here)
Yeah. It's so unfortunate that the uneducated Irish, Germans, Scots, and other Europeans immigrated here. They didn't appreciate what they had and just took low-paying jobs as skilled laborers, miners, government work(like police/fire). Everyone who immigrates here should strive for a college education and a white collar job!
the time for you to be a racist is coming to an end!
Virtually all Asian immigrants come in LEGALLY.
CNN is using the liberal tactic of taiking about "the immigration issue" while deliberately confusing and ignoring the distinction between LEGAL immigrants and ILLEGAL ALIENS.
I know many LEGAL immigrants (my wife included) and they all despise Obama's blatant undermining of our legal immigration system.
They come in legally. The easiest way is a student visa – hence the highest educated and eventually the highest paid immigrants.
Rick, I used to work in the medical field and there was one segment of the Asian community that routinely bypassed our laws to come to the U.S. as nurses. They did this by falsifying college papers to come here and challenge various nursing exams.
Another good friend of mine from a different segment of the Asian community told be, "just about everyone I know is doing something illegal or shady to get here and then to make money here. This fellow was currently paying back a debt to the feds for credit card fraud.
Any individual might be getting away with anything. But I garauntee you that most Asian-Americans are legal immigrants. I even know many legal Mexican immigrants who are enraged that Obama's policy makes all the work they did to become LEGAL immigrants a waste of time.
Got any references to back that up? Thought not.
Wrong. Lots of them do not enter with resident visas. Inform yourself better, before people start to think you're an ignorant American.
I know them personally. I don't need to read articles on CNN.com "about" the "immigration problem".
Rick, yep my LEGAL asian immigrant wife was also pretty mad about that decision, she felt like it kind of undermined the legal path... but I personally think the issue is a little more complex than that.
Curious as to why the word comp-e-ti-tive has been tagged as an unacceptable word in this forum. Because being able to excel in the hard logic based skills like math and sciences that distinguishes this group from others.
I disagree. Americans (asian, white, black, etc) are not lazy. They just want choices of what they do to earn the living. Obviously, many work hard for it too. Unskilled immigrants do not have that choice. They take whatever they can do. In the end, none of us are that bad as you think.
This article fails to mention that bankruptcy is lowest among asians as they live within their means and are responsible with their Money.
I'm a (yes, legal) bi-ethnic Mexican/American that is in medical school, and I got here by working my butt off studying, doing research, and volunteering around my community. Think twice before you generalize that all Hispanics are lazy and don't contribute to society – it is inaccurate and offensive.
me too
It is easy to buy into stereotypes, easier than to actually better ourselves so we don't lose our jobs to those more talented ones! Thanks Mr. MD2B
Oh, PUHLEASE!!!!!!!!!!
I haven't seen any post saying that hispanics are LAZY. The discussion is about ILLEGAL aliens (should not be called "immigrants", because they are NOT) and the drain on the border town economies by abusing of the programs for the legal poor, which WE legal workers pay for.
Are you one of them?
I'd be interested to know how many American-Americans are in America?! All I hear about is Asian-American, Mexican-American, Arab-American . . . where are my people, the American-Americans??
There is No such things "american-americans". You are probably talking about "European Americans" who came here in the 16th century to Jamestown.
Try saying that in the south that they are European Americans, they will pull a shot gun at you.
Menso – I think you meant 17th Century ("James Fort" May, 14 1607).
They are all American Americans... It doesn't matter where they came from. Some people just feel an awkward need to classify.
Exactly. If you're born here, you are an American. If people want to differentiate themselves with a prefix, that's their option. Not me. I don't care where my ancestors are from. I was born here, so were my kids, and were all just Americans.
i care about my roots and im irish-american. i dont see anything wrong with people that wont to hyphenate.
Read something for a change: there ARE NO American-Americans,
Says you.
All of the angry people posting on these comments are guess what ??? They are white!!!!!
except for the poster claiming that all white people are in the "hood".
You didn't have to stoop that low.
There are no American-Americans. This has always been a land of hyphenated people. The only "American-American" people exist in 1950's – 1970's serial TV shows. They didn't really exist even then, they were a myth perpetuated by a media elite to tell everybody who they were supposed to be. Before the Asian-Americans etc. there were the British-Americans who resented the immigrant hordes of Irish-Americans, German-Americans, Italian-Americans, various Eastern European -Americans etc. Eventually they melt or we do.
American-Americans are currently in the same place, the reservations, where they have been since the Indian war ended in the late 1700's.
Even they immigrated here – albeit many thousands of years ago...
American Amricans live in the reservations, and yes, you can find them; many of them might not speak English though.
Actually, the only ppl that should be allowed in the states are the ones whom support your government. And if you fail to show support for your leader, you should be exiled to canada.
every asian i know at least tries to speak english.
Definitly better than most "americans". LOL.
Where do you live?
And what language would that be? U.S. doesn't have an official language – maybe Americans need to learn more languages. European children know an average of 3 languages. Assuming that English is the only language to speak is just plain ignorant.
Actually, you do need to pass a basic English test to become a naturalized citizen. You do not need the test, however, to become or remain a permanent resident. For that reason, those who fail to learn minimal English are doomed to remain a permanent resident–paying taxes and yet being unable to vote. (i.e., taxation without representation)
Legal or illegal makes all the difference in the world. In my business, I work with a number of legal immigrants, both white and Asian. The ones I work with are hard working, creative, and started business and thus have created jobs here in America. They are assets to this country. Illegal immigrants are a different story.
So, in other words, these are the guys that are taking the jobs that Americans desperatelly want! right?
Yes, they took jobs that self-proclaimed Americans want but not qualified to do.
Yeah but the scary thing for you is that they surpassing the racist violent white man. Damn, what ya gonna do!
Great. Thank you for that.
What type of immigration are we discussing? Legal or illegal.....or is there a difference? I'm not an idiot that most of my family immigrated here a long time ago, prior to school systems, hospitals, healthcare. Work ethic is subjective, racism is slowly losing its value as a word, and these articles breed more and more hatred. The solution is to either enforce or turn a blind eye. I don't see any politician or lawmaker doing either. Will the people eventually take it into their own hands?
That's legal ones. There is no way to know how many sneak across the border.
Pssst—there were always people who thought this, it's not a new observation. Nothing has changed about "the melting pot," you just have issues.
How ironic that President Calderon thanks Obama for not deporting any illegals when in fact Mexico deports anyone who dares come thru Mexico on their way to the US. And the treatment these people get is very harsh. Mexico does not tolerate any illegals coming thru from South America. If caught, they are imprisoned, beaten and robbed of any money these people may have on them. Calderon needs to get off his stupid high horse and fix his own country. Just another politician making his rounds.
