Undocumented immigrants face arrest as they proclaim, 'No papers, no fear'

By Sarah Aarthun, CNN

Charlotte, North Carolina (CNN) - They've traveled for nearly 40 days, risking arrest, or worse, deportation.

Their home for the past month: a 40-year-old converted Greyhound bus dubbed "Priscilla."

Among them are day laborers, students, stay-at-home moms and leaders of nonprofit organizations.

And at each stop along the way, in states with some of the most stringent laws against undocumented immigrants, they chant: "No papers, no fear. Dignity is standing here."

The group's cross-country journey ended this week in Charlotte, site of the Democratic National Convention.

The timing is strategic. Their goal while they're here is to call Democrats' attention to the need for comprehensive immigration reform.

The trip began July 29 in Phoenix - home to controversial Sheriff Joe Arpaio - and has taken them through 15 cities. Stops have included Denver,  Austin, Texas; New Orleans; Atlanta; Birmingham, Alabama; and Knoxville, Tennessee.

For Leticia Ramirez, the scariest portion of the cross-country drive came while traveling from Austin to New Orleans on a stretch of Interstate 10 known for police checkpoints.

She knew the bus, emblazoned with the words "No Papers No Fear," would be an obvious target to be stopped.

The 27-year-old mother of three had one fear: "I was thinking of my kids. I didn't know if I was going to see them again."

The bus made it through to New Orleans without incident.

"We knew the risk in joining this movement, why not risk it?" Ramirez said. "That's why we are here."

Efforts to call attention to the group's cause have escalated as the journey has progressed, beginning with quiet news conferences and cultural performances in Denver and growing to include sit-ins across the street from the Knoxville County Sheriff's Office in Tennessee.

On Tuesday, they made their biggest stand yet, taking over an intersection near the Democratic convention holding banners defiantly proclaiming, "Undocumented" and "Migration is a human right."

In all, 10 people were arrested and charged with impeding traffic, Charlotte police said. None faces deportation proceedings, said Ross Feinstein, a spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

"ICE has taken no enforcement action against the Ride for Justice activists arrested Tuesday in Charlotte," Feinstein said in a statement. "ICE is focused on smart, effective immigration enforcement that prioritizes the removal of criminal aliens, recent border crossers and egregious immigration law violators, such as those who have been previously removed from the United States."

The group said it planned the act of civil disobedience "because we are tired of the mistreatment. We are tired of waiting for change and we know that it never comes without risk or without sacrifice."

Among those arrested was 25-year-old Ireri Unzueta Carrasco. Unzueta, who lives in Chicago, has a familiar story. Born in Mexico City, she came to the United States when she was 7 years old after her father was offered a job. To be with him, Unzueta, her mother and sister made the trip on tourist visas.

When the visas ran out, "we had already started to make our lives here."

They stayed, but not without consequences. For Unzueta and her sister, being undocumented meant no access to financial aid for school. No scholarships. No opportunity to study abroad.

It also meant being away from their extended family in Mexico.

"There was always fear, knowing deportation is a risk," she said. "But more than fear, I was angry and sad. ... I wanted to be with my family and play with my cousins and grow up alongside them."

She says the risk of her undocumented status really hit home for her three years ago when a friend of the family faced deportation proceedings.

"It really pushed me to figure out how to defend him," she said.

She started organizing an effort to draw attention to the friend's cause, petitioning local leaders and sending thousands of letters and faxes to ICE Director John Morton and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

She calls it her campaign of "coming out of the shadows,  showing people we are not just numbers, we are human beings."

The friend was eventually released without consequence.

Her successful effort caused her to realize "the power we had when we organized."

"It was the first time I really felt that I could have control over what it meant to be undocumented," she said.

At age 55, Phoenix resident Maria Rodriguez is one of the oldest riders on the bus. Though she's a permanent resident of the United States, she joined the group's movement because, like many of her peers, she has family members who are undocumented, including her brother, who has been deported.

Immigration legislation "affects us all," she says, but most of all, it has lasting effects on the children of undocumented migrants.

Though they may be born in this country, they live with the fear that their parents could be deported at any time, Rodriguez says. As a result, they suffer long-term "psychological consequences."

Gabriela Alcazar, 24, is one of those children. Born in Chicago, she grew up with parents who were each without papers at one time or another.

"I remember waiting at the (Mexican) border for my mother to come across, not knowing if she would make it," she said.

Lately, Unzueta says she has noticed that the dialogue on illegal immigration has turned into a "criminalization of our parents."

Legislators today, she says, are more supportive of young people and lay the blame for their undocumented status on their parents, who, in most cases, brought their children to this country.

"I blame immigration laws. They haven't adjusted to the needs of our society," Unzueta said.

The White House announced in June a bold new policy that halts deportations of some young immigrants who came to America illegally as children. The policy is considered a temporary measure that allows eligible immigrants to apply for work permits and deportation deferral for a two-year period.

Alcazar says the policy doesn't go far enough.

"It's supposed to be this grand thing, but it's still up to the individual discretion of ICE officers through an application and approval process," she said.

Other members of the group point to the number of immigrants deported under the Obama administration: 1 million people over the past four years, they say. ICE puts the number at roughly 1.5 million since 2009.

But they also say they know that Obama and the Democratic Party are the ones in the best position to affect change.

"He (Obama) has the power to do something," Ramirez said, calling for the president to end deportations altogether. "We just want to work and have a decent life."

Alcazar, who now lives in Detroit, said she was motivated to join the bus journey when she heard the group would be going to the Democratic convention.

"Republicans, we know where they stand," Alcazar said. "They've picked a side. They are bigots, anti-immigration and anti-family. ... Instead, we need to start pressuring our allies (Democrats) to make real gains for our community."

Her statements echo the larger group's stated goal: for Obama "to be remembered as the one who found the way to include the millions struggling for a better life in this country. We want President Obama to use his executive authority to provide relief for our entire community, students, parents, and all of us."

On Friday, the 40 bus riders will head back to their homes with the hopes that their message was heard in Charlotte and other cities.

All the members vow to continue raising awareness back in their individual communities.

They'll be returning with a new symbol to inspire others to join them: the Monarch butterfly.

"We would like to migrate freely around the country," Alcazar says, "just as butterflies do."

Illegal is illegal. It is not fair for people who came to the U.S. waiting and obtaining their visa before they come to the U.S. We cannot give amnesty to people who lived here illegally. They need to process just like the rest of the immigrants here.

There is no crime by immigrating, America is a free country built by immmigrats. Unless you are a native American then YOU are the result of immigration as well. It makes so mad people always acting as if they're superior cause you were born here. America was created on the backs of Immigrants and slaves and stolen from the rightful owners- the mexican and the Native American Indians! I agree if you're a criminal, then ship their ass out of here but if you're a hard working individual who's here risking your life and your family's life to have a better future then they DESERVE to be here as much as the rest of us!

Does that mean if you're white, blond and blue eyed you would also go to jail if you don't have "papers"? I suppose local citizens living near parks or beaches better not go for a walk without "papers" or risk being jailed. Hopefully these laws only apply to dark skinned folks.

I as a white American always have papers on me. I drive, have a bank account, and transact other business that requires papers. I am asked for "my papers" often without one feeling of being put upon or segregated from the rest of society. I am a legal citizen of the United States.

I agree that this country has to follow the law. That what makes this country great but there is a small problem with this. I don't blame the Mexicans who risk everything to come here. I blame who hires them. If the government imposes hefty fines the companies(numerous) then you won't have a problem. It would solve the unemployment problem and et. al. But the government won't do anything against the companies. So blame the individuals all you want but it also has to go to the source of the problem!

LOL...this white guy can assure you that NOT having 'papers' when stopped and questioned does indeed create a bit of a problem but that would not fit your idea of the 'real' world where being 'white' and having a stick between your legs just makes the world Disney Land.

This is an obscene article and it is an insult to me as an American to read this. The law is the law. These people are not citizens, they broke the law to come/remain here and then, to add insult to injury, they have the audacity to protest and complain about how this country handles immigration.

Violating this nation's sovereignty is NOT THEIR fundamental right. As a matter of fact, it is MY fundamental right to defend the sovereignty of my country. These people need to stop complaining about their self-imposed suffering. Their parent's choices should not be my problem.

Personal Responsibility is one of the core values of this nation. Perhaps they should examine that concept before throwing stones.

I agree. This is an obscene article that flies in the face of our nations laws. I wonder why the media is pandering to these foreign invaders who flout our legislation regarding immigration? We have an immigration process and it should be followed. For those who are going to mention the Native Americans, the United States has one past time conquering nations.

The DISCRIMINATION here is not against the "illegal aliens",The discrimination is against the good people trying to enter this country LEGALLY.Those are the people we want, the ones that follow our laws BEFORE they come here.If there's anything Americans can't stand is somebody "BUTTIN IN LINE",it's just not fair to those who wait and enter the right way.

people who are educated wait on the line for visa to come this country can do a lot good for America than those illegally crossover the border to reproduce their kids whom all American have to pay. What a shameless people had to ride a bus to claim their right. You are lucky that our current president want your children's votes so you are not being deported .You have no right to stay here or enjoy American welfare which paid by hard working American people because your are not American.

Hopefully some state trooper stops your bus and has all you illegals deported. You are not some special case and must go thru the same process as all the LEGAL immigrants did. After completing the proper process I'm certain you will be accepted as have all the other LEGAL immigrants. You all are just a bunch of crooks who think you are owed something. All we owe you is a bus ride to the border.

YES BECAUSE OF THE ACTIONS OF THEIR PARENTS!!! Why exactly do we owe these people anything? They came here, had a good time, decided to break the law, now have to go home. If I break the law I suffer the consequences, why shouldn't they? They special because the crossed the border? Free to migrate like butterflies? Such ignorance and disrespect for someone that was brought here as a child, with no will, and you are making them responsible for such action. Yes your parents or whoever you are here from, came making some line etc, etc, just because they had to cross the Atlantic. Because if you had the chance to swim or cross the desert to make your children a better future, would you tell me that you will wait, no matter if they die in their wait? What a piece of joke you are. And you fill your mouth with compassion and righteous words, that are way too much for you. Something just doesn't seem right with this picture. People illegally in the U.S. can admit to being here illegallly and conducting protests to get media attention, and the immigration authorities take no action. Living in the U.S. is not a right unless you're here legally. I couldn't dream of going to Mexico, then taking to the streets protesting, demanding that I be allowed to live there, even I was there legally. And, I'm a Democrat, not some extreme rightwinger.

It is unfair for these illegal immigrants to leap ahead of others who are waiting. What do we tell the others who did everything right? Sympathy aside, right is right and wrong is wrong. There should be a penalty assessed for those who violate the laws of America. They should be denied citizenship and be forced to get in the back of the line.

They should protest in their own country. How dare they demand something they do not deserve.

While I do agree that illegal is just that, ILLEGAL, they are here now and we need to do something to address the fact that they are here illegally. This doesn't mean rounding them up and sending them out of the country...that simply isn't going to happen. That would require tons of money, resources, and manpower. We need a carefully written law that would allow them to obtain citizenship and get educated, so they can start paying taxes and earn a decent living. That is the only PRACTICAL solution.

Or MAYBBEEEE it's because the law is flawed. It's really costly for people to save that money up. Why save money and potentially get rejected when you can just sneak in?? It's hard for people in Southern American countries to save up $200 when their family only makes like $20 a day.

That's their ethos behind it. It's not "catering" to them if we make the process easier, in fact it'll HELP our economy. Instead of spending millions of dollars at failing to properly curb immigration, we ought to make the immigration process easier so that way we can get them into our system so we can tax them and punish them if they break our laws. They'd also have to pay taxes which would be really helpful to our economy.

Rounding them up and shipping them home is exactly what we need to do. It can happen and needs to. How would it require TONS of money???? Here is how it could be done without taxing the legal citizens. Just as drug dealers, an illegal is arrested all money and property is confiscated. Use that to send them back!!!!! It isn't rocket science...well, for some people to understand maybe it is. We do NOT need a carefully written law...we have laws....they need to be enforced!!! That is the PRACTICAL and only solution. You broke the law coming here, anything bought with that money you made illegally (which usually by using a STOLEN SSN) is used to send you back. Anything left over goes into the fund to return the next person.

We DO have laws, you are right, however you have silly ones too. I mean, kids can't drink until their 21, yet they can sign up to die for their country? What kind of law is that?

There were Jim Crow laws and laws for slavery and segregation, were those okay too?

Just because something is the law of the land doesn't make it okay to separate families and displace people.

MANY of these people are fleeing from economic disaster or dangerous areas.

The first thing someone does when they don't agree with them- call them idiots. We need to learn how to respect each others opinions, and not let it get so negative. I don't know what the answer is to all this, I just know in my heart that I want to feel safe, and I want my children to be safe. The last thing I want to see though is mothers and children separated, Ive saw it many times, mothers giving their children birthday cake through a hole in the border fence, that breaks my heart, we must come together and work on a solution without being violent and negative. Although, that sounds as far away as the moon right now.

Truth of the matter is that ILLEGAL immigration was how this country was founded!!

THE NATIVE AMERICANS DIDN'T WANT WHITE COLONISTS here in the first place!! Yet, we celebrate this on Thanksgiving every year hahahahahah.

You xenophobes are just using "the law" to mask your xenophobia. You don't want illegals here because you know they are willing to work harder than you are for a cheaper price. Well guess what you lazy, obese, Americans: illegals are better workers than you.

No one talks about how there are millions of illegals who literally SUSTAIN California's economy (which is doing much better than most of the other states, mind you). Without illegal immigrants you wouldn't have your excellently curated gardens, your clean dishes and clean houses. You wouldn't have your cooks and you certainly wouldn't have your fruit/veggies.

Tell me what law was broken when the founders came here? I can certainly tell you the relevent laws that illegals spit on when *they* sneak in or commit visa fraud. So what laws were in place that would make the founders 'illegal? That's right...NONE. You pro-crime people always set this straw-man up and we on the pro-enforcement side always knock it back down. I think it's just your way of trying to find an excuse, ANY excuse, that makes these particular criminals sound more legitimate than they are. (psssst...it doesn't work).

That said, I'd like to point out that the VAST majority of Americans raise their own kids, do their own housework, cook their own food, and mow their own lawns. We do NOT need illegals clogging up our schools, clinics, prisons, and social service offices. You can go ahead and call us fat and lazy (even though it's us fat, lazy Americans that make up the other 95 percent of the workforce) but at least most of us are *honest*...unlike every lying, cheating illegal alien that's ever spit on the law.

Zameer Hasin, using your logic, everyone would have the right to freely move about any country they wish seeing as how no one is originally from any country. You are using a very weak argument.

This is of course hypocrisy at its finest; while legal immigrants have to go through long, expensive processes, sometimes facing rejection and having to start the whole process again, these people get to enter whenever they see fit and then claim to have a right to be in the country?
These are people that come from countries that constantly deport outsiders (Mexico deports MANY Salvadorians every year).
Why do they think they are above legal immigrants, what makes them so special that they don't have to go through the process while others do and get rejected and wait.

"But they are trying to make a better life for themselves, poor them" What, so just because they live close to the US that makes it ok for them to get in? What about the starving African child with a bloated stomach and suffering from disease, is it fair for him to be living in like that? Does this somehow give these people the right to move illegally into a country because they were close than that African child?

Hey my life isn't as great as those rich billionaires, does that mean I should rob a bank because I'm trying to make a better life for myself?
"But you're not poor, they are, they're trying to survive"
I assure you that the poorest person in El Salvador is better off than the average population in Somalia, does if you want to talk about survival I suggest you talk to Somalis before you talk to Salvadorians.

North America was not a nation; Native Americans were warring, killing, raping and sacrificing each other far before Europeans ever arrived. Wars were fought, there were losers and winners, European settlers won and established a new nation with rules and laws.

Germany lost a lot of territory after they lost WWI and WWII, does that mean they have the right to reclaim it?
Does Colombia constantly complain about the territory it lost in wars to other countries, or does it accept the fact that it lost the war and losers don't get to decide what to do.
Does Peru have a right over the territory it lost to Chile after it lost the war? No, it doesn't.

Native Americans and Mexicans don't have a right to complain about the lands they lost after the wars they lost.

Stop using your stupid arguments that makes no logical sense because you are beating a dead horse beyond recognition and you’re losing any credibility you might have had.

You asked what laws have the founders fathers have broken? The answer to that is many laws broken by the foundign fathers. Laws are only written guidelines to what is deemed permissible\impermissible by society. The founding fathers have murdered, thousands of indians, africans,. Murdering was always a law. Thanksgiving in my opinion should be considered a joke. Considering what was done to the Native Americans who helped the early settlers survive that harsh winter.

Learn your U.S history, Actually, the Native Americans welcomed colonists with open arms and were glad to have the income and goods provided to them from the settlers. This is because there they had no laws on the issue because there was no shortage of land or space or resources. It was not until later after the new U.S. citizens began to encroach on and push the natives away that we had friction. This was a new generation. The children and grandchildren of the original settlers.
Now, skip forward to present day... There is a shortage of land, jobs and resources. The U.S. has nothing against immigrants. In fact, they are welcomed with open arms. All that is asked is that they do it properly. Look at the African Americans and they due proccess" they went through. The Irish and Germans who were literally stoned as they left the boats. They too did thier paperwork and followed procedures.
It is not hard to come into the U.S. in a legal way. Some might say it is expensive, it really is not and even if it were, why not try saving money to pay for the paperwork? People will pay thousands of dollars and risk death, rape or worse to get smuggled in when they do do it much more safely and legally not to mention for less money by doing it legally.

Look at my history!? PFFFT. You are a blind blind person.

THE SPANIARDS came and invaded American lands first! Even in the 1600s when the English came, they still had disease and starvation and had frequent battles with the local people!

        You know why??

Because the Europeans came solely to exploit the land, the resources and the native people!! Instead of living in harmony with the land! It was NOT a "new generation" or their children or their grandchildren!! It was the FIRST generation! The "conquistadors!" the "fur trappers"

(Please, come at me with your petty attempts again, they are laughable)

You say they are welcomed with open arms? AHAHAHAH

African Americans came here as SLAVES. I think that's why they were welcomed. They didn't have any "due process" you nitwit what are you talking about? America had to have a CIVIL WAR in order for them to gain their freedom and they still had to face segregation for another hundred years.

Germans Irish and Italians came here and were welcomed because they were thrown into the POLITICAL MACHINE. They were welcomed and almost pampered so they could work in factories, live and die in inner-urban cities and contribute a vote to whatever voting bloc/political machine at the time ^_^

Why not pay? Because it takes long and it costs A LOT.

In a lot of third world countries, some families literally don't make more than $10 a day. I know $190 isn't a lot to you, but it is to impoverished people.

Your grasp of history is tenuous Zameer, the early pilgrim/puritans were recruited by native Americans to fight wars of extinction against other tribes, as the Native Americans had been doing to each other for many thousands of years before they arrived. There was no nation with laws to break, only tribes who slaughtered each other to resolve their issues. First slavery in America was by Native Americans of other Native Americans. I'm not sure what your point is anyway, we're not klling illegal immigrants like native Americans did. Are you suggesting a change in policy so we can be more like the wonderful Native Americans were?

It's laughable and it is shameful. I'm a History major, just listen up.

The first "settlers" were the Spaniards (& Portugese), not the Puritans!!! They came and SLAUGHTERED the natives in the Florida region/West indies through disease and enslavement. Look it up! Once the Europeans arrived, the Natives were consistently killed off until they were no more. This is EXTINCTION.

"Tribes" lived on the land. These Natives lived WITH the land and lived in coexistence with the land and with other Natives. You say they "slaughtered" each other and enslaved each other, but this is not true. The EUROPEANS brought upon their downfall.

My general point with this is that WE as AMERICANS are founded upon the very "ideal" of encroachment and immigration.

We, as Americans, use other people's lands and resources EVEN TO THIS DAY. Yet when there are immigrants who are coming in illegally, we throw a big fuss? That's the biggest contradiction ever! "We can come to your land and steal your things and kill your people, but you can't do that to us..."

Even though! Illegals HARDLY kill and harm Americans. In fact, look it up, I think you'll find that Americans kill more Americans than illegals do. Americans pump more drugs into Americans than illegals do. And Americans CERTAINLY evict and marginalize other Americans more than illegals. Illegals are not your problem friend, they aren't even ABLE to work in the MAJORITY of places!

Oh, but they gotta go because it's "the law"???

As I have stated, law's can be trite and silly. There were segregation laws and slavery laws, does that make them okay? Should we bring those back to? Please, get with the times. Half of societies laws are ridiculous and meant to control MAN, not to protect him.

America is a country that is founded upon the notion that any man of any background can come to this country and make money. That's because America's laws are so lax that they allow for upward mobility. You can literally gamble your ass off in a night and be a millionaire. Or you can open a store. Sell things on the street. Go to school. Whatever. The American Dream is still a potential reality for immigrants, and immigration laws will not stop that. This American Dream is one that cannot be broken, because it's something that people have been dreaming about since Columbus came here.

We need to get the current illegals into our system. That way you wouldn't have anymore hit and runs. I've been to court on three occasions and every SINGLE time there was an extremely long list of names of illegals that don't show up to court. These are immigrants that are going under the radar.

        You know why?

They are scared to go to court! So they give a fake name and they get away with the crime they did.

        This isn't right.

Therefore, I ask you: How can we round them up and ship em off if we can't even get them into our courts in the first place???

ALL it takes is to allow them to get id's and licenses. Not that hard. The social security system and health care system are already broken, we need to completely open it up. With this influx of illegal "citizens" we'd have a higher demand for public services. You wouldn't have a higher demand for stores and stuff, because that demand is already there.

The government then, would be forced to create new schools, hospitals as well as hire, basically, a whole new work force. You'd need new nurses, teachers, doctors, dentists, etc for illegals.

All it would take is for us to get illegals into our system so we can start TAXING them and FINING them.

The US has granted universal amnesty for all illegals once before and they can certainly do it again. Sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but they probably will do it again! =]

All illegals should be deported immediately — I don't care if they've been here for ten minutes or ten years! They are criminals who leech off of society, taking health care, education, and social services that legitimate citizens pay for. Take your sad story back to Mexico. Don't bring your country's violence and drugs here and demand that the American people coddle you. Obama, you are such a fool. My respect to the state governments that are taking a stand against illegals: ¡Hasta la vista, illegals!

That illegals fear all the things they do is a good thing. It's an incentive to those considering coming here to do so legally. The more pain, fear, and rejection illegals fear the better. You don't like the major upheaval of being sent back to Mexico? Guess you shouldn't have come here illegally to begin with! You don't want your kids to get kicked out of "the only land they've ever known"? Don't bring them here illegally! You don't want to wait to go through the process of coming to the U.S. legally? Tough! It's that easy!

I never said everyone else is innocent. But people who are here illegally need to go. It's basic behavior conditioning: punish an act and it will not be repeated. Make life for illegals difficult and kick them out and they will do what they need to do to avoid such pain: come to the U.S. legally. It's the same reason why many people don't rape and steal: they don't like the consequences. That parents brought a kid to the U.S. illegally just makes the parents bad. The kid doesn't get the right to stay any more than a kid who steals at the urging of his parents gets to keep the item stolen.

I guess this is not a popular opinion on this web site / news company but I do believe the law should be obeyed and that includes immigration laws – that existed BEFORE these people came into the United States and they violated our laws by coming here illegally So yes, they should be deported. No sympathy from me on that one. I really do not care which country they are from – The rest of the people who are coming here and applying for citizenship and doing it legally should be treated with respect – but the ones who thumb their nose at our law's and run across our borders, illegally, should be sent home.

Agreed. I love how if you are anti-illegal immigration you are suddenly a racist/bigot. I don't see what is so wrong about expecting new arrivals in our country to abide by our legal system. And many of the immigrants that built this country came here legally, processed through checkpoints and, in many cases, were instantly drafted to fight this country's wars. I know a great many immigrants that are great people, highly patriotic and love the United States and its laws. They are all legal immigrants. I have also seen illegals that can't speak the language, complain about American society or culture, cry about not getting all the benefits of citizens, but then get incensed when I suggest they learn English so they can fill our application papers, deal with Federal agencies, etc. They also get angry when I suggest they pay taxes. Deport all illegals, if they want to come here legally, that is fine. I came here legally from Korea and went through the immigration process. The President does not make laws – the House and Senate make laws. Focus your blame on them if you must point fingers.

I suggest somebody needs to take a civics class and learn how our government works.

As for me, I support the President's order to temporarily suspend deportation of productive young people who were brought here as minors through no fault of their own. Such people ought to have a path to citizenship, and Congress needs to act.

Those who deliberately and knowingly break the law as adults, however, need to go back where they came from and get in line.

I think a reason immigrants come to the United States because of the resource america has to offer. Though we here in the news we dont have resources, or money but thier are billionaire companys out here. Who are willing to pay immigrants to work for them because everyone is going to college. Who is gonna work these low paying jobs. Who, not just mexicans but those who are willing to learn and make a way for themselves. Not just america but the world is lacking confidence to help the poor. We were created thru the Lord, the Lord wipe out human life with a flood. Then we re-populated and all do respect to the politicians and goverments of the world. I believe we are trying to make a better life
for the kids of tomorrow not just ourselves. We cant take a billion dollars to heaven. "One can say i made a billion dollars in my lifetime." If these individuals hold onto thier money then they do. So americans cant complain about why thier is no work. If thier is no invest for a future company then thier is no work, for today. I could go on about on like the president if we dont make a change now. When we pass on who is gonna be thier with the brains to help the next generation. And dont forget who we are, If thier constant battle between countrys. Then what do you do let another country invade us and let see how sicking that can be. And if we are constantly at war who is gonna fight our wars, us and the kids of tomorrow. Do we let our country go down the drain or do we stand and fight for America and the beauty that each individual here can bring.

Yet we are living under peoples business to make our lifes better. So what is new racism and insults need to stop so we can make way for the future. If your asking for help and these people go looking for that help, thier is gonna be a person out thier with goodness in thier heart to help. That is a complete lie about what that Feinstein spokesperson said about ICE. They will deport whomever they can– deportees do not have to be terrorists or criminals, and they can even be greencard holders married to an American. Therefore, I do not agree with anything that one said, because I know it is completely untrue. I know this for a fact. I just thought I would bring the truth to light, because people really shouldn't lie to the American public like that, and provide false and misleading information,

The truth is that Mexico has to have it military protect migrants looking to invade America because even the Mexicans dont want them consuming their resources. They give them lodging and food and transportation to the best boarder croosings. All just so they dont stay there. This whole thing is a nightmare and its wrong to put Americans in the position to have to deal with illegal aliens. The legal migrants are just as angry as every other America. They pay and go through the proper channels and these invaders just hop on over. This is an invasion no doubt about it. They take jobs, welfare, medical resources, etc etc away from AMERICANS. THATS RIGHT AMERICANS you know the people who at the end of the day have to pay for this. With unemployment rising it is just foolish to allow anymore people in. This will start a civil war if the government doesnt start getting rid of them. Americans will only be pushed so far then it will be open season on them. If our people out of work cant even get a minor job to live off of there will be problems. AMERICA FIRST

Hool – here's the issue with the truth. My wife is a greencard holder. She has valid papers to be in this country. She pays social security, state and federal taxes and earns a paycheck. It may be human to want to migrate, unfortunately it's not fair for my family to have to pay more taxes to help these people into the system and then never become legal. The social welfare that these illegal immigrants are asking for is a leech on the system. They're not wanting to be legal here and they don't want to integrate even with America's spoken language – which is English. 90% of them simply want to take. That's completely wrong especially for those of us that have done the hard right over the easy wrong.

Life isn't fair....there it is. It's the cold hard truth. Fortunately for EVERYONE that wants legal citizenship here in this country – there is a pathway. I would suggest people use it. HELLO. It's the democrats that WANT poor mexicans to invade this country by the millions. Look at the liberal states like California, that has become mexico, since they ALLOWED millions mexico's poorest and most criminal element to move there. The democrats refuse to enforce immigration laws. Obama called Americans who want immigration laws enforced "the enemies" in a univision interview. He also sued Arizona when they tried to enforce their own laws. He knowingly allowed Eric Holder to run illegal guns into mexico with the fast and furious operation. Obama also refuses to fire Eric Holder and the worthless Janet Napolitano, who does NOTHING to protect the homeland from the illegal invasion from mexico.

  47. Fact check please, and no exaggerations...

There are no police checkpoints on I-10 between Austin and New Orleans. First, they would be taking I-35 south to San Antonio to interesect with I-10. Or, they could take Hwy 290 from Auston to I-10 (or to 77 south where it reaches I-10 at Schulenberg). But, there are no police checkpoints ANYWHERE. I have driven all of these roads, 100's of times. I just drove 2 days ago from San Antonio to Houston and back. There are 4 speed traps on the 190 miles between San Anton and Houston. The only checkpoints are on I-35 northbound, about 20 miles north of Laredo (200 miles south of Austin), on Hwy 281 in Falfurrias (where willie nelson and snoop dog got busted for pot) and on I-10 about 30 miles east of El Paso- these are where they stop every vehicle and walk a dog around the outside of it, and only once asked me at the Falfurrias checkpoint if I was an American citizen. Didn't ask for an ID or anything. There is a weigh station that is never open just past Seguin on I-10 going east, and another one that is only open sometimes about 40 miles west of Houston on I-10, near Sealy. Please check your facts, this article is bogus. And the Amtrak train from El Paso (which starts in Los Angeles), and after stopping overnight in San Antonio then continues north to Chicago (Texas Eagle) and east to New Orleans, does not have any checkpoints either.

Why don't they just apply for citizenship? By refusing to do so they show exactly why the majority of the US doesn't want them here...they live by the belief that laws do not apply to them. So, my advice....Go back to where you came from and stay there unless you want to become a citizen and SUPPORT YOURSELF

Lisa, did you even read the article? I have my doubts. No one is REFUSING to apply for citizenship; they CAN'T. Only immigrants with a permanent visa (green card) can do so and they can only do so FIVE YEARS after getting it, unless they are married to a US citizen. Then they only have to wait for three years. Besides, where would you have those who were brought here so young they do not even remember where they are from? They are already home. They are here.

There is proof that other ethnicities were displaced by these "natives", who were fighting with each other right up until the "evil white people" showed up.

Once they get that little citizen they can get all kind of free things. Then they bring over the rest of the family for the nice Americans to take care of. ENOUGH

Yes enough but the government is doing nothing about it. These illegals are robbing this nation blind. They earn here in cash and send the money back home. Practically everything is free for them because they say that they don't have any money. They get free healthcare, I have seen it. They have to pay nothing for doctor's visit because they have anchor baby. They get money for food, they get free dental, vision and food stamps. They make hugs mansions back home because what they earn is for them to send back home. That gives incentive to their country men to follow their footsteps and come here illegally.

this has to stop but it is already too late. States are going bankrupt and on top of that gang violence, drug problems are on the increase. USA is going down very soon.

I agree that they all should be deported. They are criminals. There is no degree of being a criminal. If you break our laws in the USA you are a criminal. Why has no president stopped this tragedy for America? Bush did nothing and neither did the presidents before him. I am sick of spening my tax money taking care of these free loaders. R U? We need to do something and that is just shoot them when they cross our border with out an invitation.

"To be with him, Unzueta, her mother and sister made the trip on tourist visas." – IOW, they committed fraud. But they still insist 'we are not criminals'. yeah, right.

"illegal immigration has turned into a "criminalization of our parents." – illegal immigration is punishable by fines and/or *prison*. It *is* a crime (it falls under the US *CRIMINAL* Code, not the US CIVIL Code). People who commit crimes *are* criminals, therefore the people who "criminalized" your parents *are* your parents. -

"I blame immigration laws. They haven't adjusted to the needs of our society," – and why should American laws have to be adjusted to meet the needs of Mexican citizens? American law should protect and benefit American citizens, not cater to the needs of a foreign citizenry.

and I say all this as a Democrat, one of those who get unjustly slandered as 'allies' of criminals.

I am also a democrat but do not agree with allowing illegal aliens to stay. I want each and every illegal immigrant to have to go to a wartorn third world country and tell women in Sudan or children in Liberia (who are Christian before the Repubs jump all over me) that they won't be allowed to come to the USA as legal immigrants because illegal aliens took that possibility away from them. And I want every illegal immigrant to have to meet the indigenous populations of Mexico and say sorry for not standing up for your rights as citizens either.

Give em a inch...They demand a mile. I knew that pandering to them would make them more SMUG about how they broke the law.

Have an open door policy like we do in Canada our jails are filled with those who came to this country illegally. Taxpayers are paying for these types

If someone proudly declares themself to be an illegal immigrant they should be arrested and deported. By ignoring that person the authorities are essentially saying that being here is ok and is not a crime.

I love the fact that this article posits that illegal Mexican "stay at home moms" aren't a burden on our social programs that should be removed from the country immediately for just coming over here for a free ride.

Illegal immigration has many problems including job stealing from farming, construction, and a few other industries but not many. However none of that is significant in comparison to the same border holes allowing terrorists and drug shipments coming through mexico to enter the country. Often times the drug shipments are being carried by you guessed illegal immigrants as part of payment for safe passage into the US. The same guides who bring in the drugs have escorted about thousand terrorists into the US. The terrorists used their connections with meth, cocaine, and heroin shipments from the middle east to get here. The biggest groups that are or were supporting this were Al Qaeda and Hezbollah. In fact if it wasn't a marijuana shipment it was probably bought from Al Qaeda or Hezbollah. Get to know the sources of drugs its pretty scary where it comes from and what it tends to buy. Most people wouldn't know this unless they study criminal justice or homeland security or served in law enforcement in border states.

Okay, so could you give us some sources for your "statistics" on Hezbollah and Al Qaeda? Oh, but you do realize that Hezbollah and Al Qaeda are anything but allies and are diametrically opposed to one and another, don't you? Or do you just like spouting baseless facts to engender more fear?
