Undocumented immigrants face arrest as they proclaim, 'No papers, no fear'

By Sarah Aarthun, CNN

Charlotte, North Carolina (CNN) - They've traveled for nearly 40 days, risking arrest, or worse, deportation.

Their home for the past month: a 40-year-old converted Greyhound bus dubbed "Priscilla."

Among them are day laborers, students, stay-at-home moms and leaders of nonprofit organizations.

And at each stop along the way, in states with some of the most stringent laws against undocumented immigrants, they chant: "No papers, no fear. Dignity is standing here."

The group's cross-country journey ended this week in Charlotte, site of the Democratic National Convention.

The timing is strategic. Their goal while they're here is to call Democrats' attention to the need for comprehensive immigration reform.

The trip began July 29 in Phoenix - home to controversial Sheriff Joe Arpaio - and has taken them through 15 cities. Stops have included Denver,  Austin, Texas; New Orleans; Atlanta; Birmingham, Alabama; and Knoxville, Tennessee.

For Leticia Ramirez, the scariest portion of the cross-country drive came while traveling from Austin to New Orleans on a stretch of Interstate 10 known for police checkpoints.

She knew the bus, emblazoned with the words "No Papers No Fear," would be an obvious target to be stopped.

The 27-year-old mother of three had one fear: "I was thinking of my kids. I didn't know if I was going to see them again."

The bus made it through to New Orleans without incident.

"We knew the risk in joining this movement, why not risk it?" Ramirez said. "That's why we are here."

Efforts to call attention to the group's cause have escalated as the journey has progressed, beginning with quiet news conferences and cultural performances in Denver and growing to include sit-ins across the street from the Knoxville County Sheriff's Office in Tennessee.

On Tuesday, they made their biggest stand yet, taking over an intersection near the Democratic convention holding banners defiantly proclaiming, "Undocumented" and "Migration is a human right."

In all, 10 people were arrested and charged with impeding traffic, Charlotte police said. None faces deportation proceedings, said Ross Feinstein, a spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

"ICE has taken no enforcement action against the Ride for Justice activists arrested Tuesday in Charlotte," Feinstein said in a statement. "ICE is focused on smart, effective immigration enforcement that prioritizes the removal of criminal aliens, recent border crossers and egregious immigration law violators, such as those who have been previously removed from the United States."

The group said it planned the act of civil disobedience "because we are tired of the mistreatment. We are tired of waiting for change and we know that it never comes without risk or without sacrifice."

Among those arrested was 25-year-old Ireri Unzueta Carrasco. Unzueta, who lives in Chicago, has a familiar story. Born in Mexico City, she came to the United States when she was 7 years old after her father was offered a job. To be with him, Unzueta, her mother and sister made the trip on tourist visas.

When the visas ran out, "we had already started to make our lives here."

They stayed, but not without consequences. For Unzueta and her sister, being undocumented meant no access to financial aid for school. No scholarships. No opportunity to study abroad.

It also meant being away from their extended family in Mexico.

"There was always fear, knowing deportation is a risk," she said. "But more than fear, I was angry and sad. ... I wanted to be with my family and play with my cousins and grow up alongside them."

She says the risk of her undocumented status really hit home for her three years ago when a friend of the family faced deportation proceedings.

"It really pushed me to figure out how to defend him," she said.

She started organizing an effort to draw attention to the friend's cause, petitioning local leaders and sending thousands of letters and faxes to ICE Director John Morton and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

She calls it her campaign of "coming out of the shadows,  showing people we are not just numbers, we are human beings."

The friend was eventually released without consequence.

Her successful effort caused her to realize "the power we had when we organized."

"It was the first time I really felt that I could have control over what it meant to be undocumented," she said.

At age 55, Phoenix resident Maria Rodriguez is one of the oldest riders on the bus. Though she's a permanent resident of the United States, she joined the group's movement because, like many of her peers, she has family members who are undocumented, including her brother, who has been deported.

Immigration legislation "affects us all," she says, but most of all, it has lasting effects on the children of undocumented migrants.

Though they may be born in this country, they live with the fear that their parents could be deported at any time, Rodriguez says. As a result, they suffer long-term "psychological consequences."

Gabriela Alcazar, 24, is one of those children. Born in Chicago, she grew up with parents who were each without papers at one time or another.

"I remember waiting at the (Mexican) border for my mother to come across, not knowing if she would make it," she said.

Lately, Unzueta says she has noticed that the dialogue on illegal immigration has turned into a "criminalization of our parents."

Legislators today, she says, are more supportive of young people and lay the blame for their undocumented status on their parents, who, in most cases, brought their children to this country.

"I blame immigration laws. They haven't adjusted to the needs of our society," Unzueta said.

The White House announced in June a bold new policy that halts deportations of some young immigrants who came to America illegally as children. The policy is considered a temporary measure that allows eligible immigrants to apply for work permits and deportation deferral for a two-year period.

Alcazar says the policy doesn't go far enough.

"It's supposed to be this grand thing, but it's still up to the individual discretion of ICE officers through an application and approval process," she said.

Other members of the group point to the number of immigrants deported under the Obama administration: 1 million people over the past four years, they say. ICE puts the number at roughly 1.5 million since 2009.

But they also say they know that Obama and the Democratic Party are the ones in the best position to affect change.

"He (Obama) has the power to do something," Ramirez said, calling for the president to end deportations altogether. "We just want to work and have a decent life."

Alcazar, who now lives in Detroit, said she was motivated to join the bus journey when she heard the group would be going to the Democratic convention.

"Republicans, we know where they stand," Alcazar said. "They've picked a side. They are bigots, anti-immigration and anti-family. ... Instead, we need to start pressuring our allies (Democrats) to make real gains for our community."

Her statements echo the larger group's stated goal: for Obama "to be remembered as the one who found the way to include the millions struggling for a better life in this country. We want President Obama to use his executive authority to provide relief for our entire community, students, parents, and all of us."

On Friday, the 40 bus riders will head back to their homes with the hopes that their message was heard in Charlotte and other cities.

All the members vow to continue raising awareness back in their individual communities.

They'll be returning with a new symbol to inspire others to join them: the Monarch butterfly.

"We would like to migrate freely around the country," Alcazar says, "just as butterflies do."

They're just looking for a better life, it's the politicians that allow it that are the problem.

Politicians in both parties. The GOP doesn't oppose illegal immigration any more than the democrats. Bush is proof of that. It's red meat to dangle in front of the middle class base before elections. Romney will be on board for the next incarnation of amnesty. He may even go as far as Bush and call people who oppose it racists and vigilantes.

He needs to go back to Mexico City and protest their immigration laws. The hypocrisy of illegal immigration advocates is amazing. Our immigration laws are some of the most lax in the world, but still they single us out.

More low skill labor means lower wages and higher rents. People who think they're being compassionate don't understand simple economics. Our poor people are being pushed into rural areas with no jobs. We're creating a welfare class.

We import Mexican racism and it's starting to take hold here. Mexican is almost synonymous with menial laborer now. Harsh, but anyone who says otherwise is either very sheltered or a liar..

The real tradtion of immigration is importing cheap labor to undercut our own poor people. Then the immigrants are pitted against the natives so they don't unite and vote in people who might actually make life better for them. People who think they're empowering themselves by rallying into ethnic groups don't understand how the system works.

The humane path is to push Mexico to reform and protect our the poor people we already have from exploitation.

I am assuming bill you are including the unofficial numbers of unemployment. Official numbers only include those who are still looking for full time work. This does not include those who are only searching for part or have stopped looking or have been looking at a menial rate ie applying for less than one or two jobs a week.

"Migration is a human right." – ummm....no it's not. It's a right for people who come here legally. No country HAS to let anyone migrate.

'Ramirez said, calling for the president to end deportations altogether. "We just want to work and have a decent life." '
I really have no problem with that EXCEPT come here LEGALLY!

The thing that really irks me about all of it is that many people are of the mindset that all Hispanics are here illegally. And they are perfectly fine with abusing the rights of American citizens because the are of Hispanic descent. From the sounds of it, the illegals could careless about that and are only concerned with how it affects them.

Want to end illegal immigration? Start arresting and convicting the owners and CEOs of the companies that are hiring them on charges of aiding and abetting in the commission of a crime. Overnight, you will see these folks self-deporting as their jobs are literally gone.

But this will never happen, as the majority of those businesses actually thrive from low-cost labor that they pay under the table in cash. And you will find both Democrats and Republicans doing the same thing.

      Why do illegals come here?
      Jobs.

If you put people in prison for hiring illegals, what will people stop (mostly, never completely) doing?
      Hiring illegals.

If people stop hiring illegals, what will not be available to illegals?
      Jobs.

So if illegals are not here to do all the jobs that, as our friend to the south Vicente Fox says, "Even blacks don't want", how will we find people to do them?
By raising wages to a level commensurate with the requirements... The American way.

In 2005, while i was still in high school, illegal immigrant teenagers staged this huge "walk-out." It was so frustrating because they had people on each street, either in their car with the engine off or laying down on the actual asphalt, preventing people from leaving the school. I have no idea to this day what their plan was or what they were trying to acomplish. The next day they were on the news for doing this and people were commenting on a message board similar to CNN's that their action were ridiculous. Not only for doing an un-peacful protest but also because they took the schools flag pole, put the Mexican flag on it and turned the American flag unside down. It doesn't make sense, if they love Mexico more than America, they can go back!

My Supreme Court has ruled that if illegal alien children are on my land then we have to educate them. Therefore, it stands to logic, the way to remove illegal aliens from American classrooms is to assure that they are not on American soil. Get illegal aliens off my land, off my roads, out of my schools, and out of my pocket and do it now!

Why or how can you justify taking my tax money away from my childs education and use it for the education of a non-citizen who in a vast majority of cases works for cash, pays in no taxes and in a fairly high number of cases draws food stamps and welfare to boot (also paid by my tax dollars) and drives an illegally registered and uninsured car. I work with a large number of Hispanic citizens who are here legally and they don't want them here either, it gives them a bad reputation and only serves to further bolster the stereotypes that cause them problems every day. Cant you understand! one more time, America has laws Mexico has laws all countries have laws do you know what a law really is? you can not cross a sovereign border then demand rights meant for the country where you illegally entered for instance you cannot cross into North Korea without consequences or from El Salvador into Mexico without problems so my point is don't come here and expect special treatment or sympathy from American politicians or citizens.

"We already knew, when we applied for the temporary work visa, that we had no plans to leave when it expired. Why punish us when we never had any intention of obeying the law? Instead you should continue not arresting us as we tour the country attempting to influence the politics of a nation we have no legitimate right to even be in. The Republicans are racist because they don't want total amnesty and unlimited illegal immigration. They also keep saying that citizens have more right to work in this country than illegal immigrants - and since illegal immigrants are Mexican, that just shows the Republicans are racist against Mexicans. The Democrats, on the other hand, will grant amnesty, grant us the unearned right to vote, grant us in-state tuition and free health care at the expense of those racist taxpayers whose jobs we're taking for a fraction of a living wage. They'll even grant states the freedom to use Federal money to pay welfare benefits to illegals while they are learning English (also at taxpayer expense) - so they can begin stealing a higher class of jobs from citizens."

Here's the thing (and this is coming from someone who went through legal hell to become legalized.) I do not believe in this movement. The idea that "Migration is a human right" should not be the message and quite frankly I believe, even while I was going through the legalization process, any and ALL that enter the country illegally (i.e. crossing boarders) should go back, no if, and's, or buts. Reason? You never went through a background check process like those the come with a VISA but overstay said VISA. Now unto those people....I think that if they come here through legal means and overstay (as was my parents case) but are attempting to become residents and be solid, good people (as were my parents) they should be issue a residency card so that they can live, and work, and pay taxes, and raise a family (that was not the case for my parents...they were denied ever application and the reason was "we have met the quota for your nationality." Finally, the kids.....(aka people similar to what I meant through) as long as they came here through legal means...i think what this current administration is doing is a step in the right direction....

We are preventing countries like Mexico from having a long over due civil war. letting them run here does not help them correct their problems. Yes they should all be sent back and told fight for your rights. Fight to change the changes you need. If they did this maybe we would not have the drug problems from their drug lords we have

Sheldon, you are correct. After 160 years of corrupt leadership in Mexico, it's time for Mexicans to fight for their own freedom and standard of living IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY, instead of running here, yet rarely partaking in our culture or history.

I fully support sending back Mexican men back to Mexico, fully trained in combat, to retake their nation, and place freedom up high, along with human rights and obedience to just laws.

Somehow though, I don't think we'll see that in our lifetime, and Mexicans will continue to live in poverty, escaping to our nation just to feed their family.

That said, the only solution then isn't to allow our laws be violated, but to counter the breaking of those laws with deportation and in some cases, prison sentences, then deportation. Time for Americans to grow a backbone and start standing up for their own laws – even if our so-called "president" ignores them.

Sheldon, your ignorance is rather astounding. For your benefit I'm leaving the definition of the word migrate, which essentially defines what settlers did when they came to America.

        Migrate –
        1
: to move from one country, place, or locality to another
        2
: to pass usually periodically from one region or climate to another for feeding or breeding
        3
: to change position in an organism or substance

Migrated to America, forced Natives from their lands through warfare and false treaties, and colonized their lands.

The diff. in Migrating and Colonization is that England sent us here to colonize. We were not running from our country we were increasing the size of our country. After colonization we fought to become a republic of England and this is why we are the "Republic of America"

The Mexicans and there Illegals coming to this country are running from their country. They need to stay and have their civil war just like we did.

So no we did not migrate here like the illegals and lib's try to tell people. We colonized here.

I guess these people, illegally immigrated population, doesnt even realize that they were wrong in the first place. People talking about original native indians and pilgrims being illegal should realize there was no Law of the Land at the time regarding immigration. SO unless you can bring a banana leaf with incriptions of immigration rules from great Indian chief at the time, you cant say that when whites migrated, they broke any rule. It was a lawless land and the powerful group won. But now as it stands, there is in fact a law of the land for immigration which was broken by these people. They should be punished by jail or deportation. WHy should your first mistake of staying back illegally be ignored? Just because the whites came and wiped out indians at that time, doesn't mean they are illegal immigrants. YOu now want to be part of USA because these white people made this country what it is, not you and not your forefathers. Also, you're incorrect when you say that we will have to be paid under the table and have no political rights. We'll be paid just like all other legal workers and since we'll have the right to stand up for our own interests, we won't let employers push wages into the toilet (which is what illegal immigrants do). We'll have all those rights because we are citizens of the country.

lbj – I salute you. My very first paying job was cleaning hotel rooms. You talk about cleaning toilets. Ever cleaned a honeymoon suite after it's been vacated? I hated it, loathed every minute of it. But I moved on. I am white, my father is a LEGAL immigrant from another country. I paid my dues with that first job and had a few others that I don't want to ever go back to. But, I considered those jobs a right of passage. They paid for my education and got me to where I am today. No more – illegal immigrants have taken that away. Yes, us poor white folks would do those jobs, have done those jobs and would still be doing those jobs if illegals had not come in and undercut the wages. I have absolutely no problem with anyone who comes to this country legally. I do have a huge issue with my taxes being raised to pay for free benefits to illegals. Maybe I should renounce my citizenship, then return illegally for the free handout?

For your information, I HAVE picked produce and I HAVE cleaned toilets! When you have a family, you do what you have to do to keep them fed and taken care of. I was paid minimum wage while doing these jobs. Taking care of a family of 4 with minimum wage pay is no easy feat. Then you're told that you make too much to get any kind of assistance! Yet, the illegal immigrants come over here and get all the assistance that people here "make too much to get"! In most cases they actually have more disposable income than the people working for minimum wage.

I am no longer able to work, and still cannot get disability or any kind of help. Forget the fact that I paid my SS and Medicare taxes just like everyone else.

I can't get medical care because I can't afford it. However, the illegal immigrants medical care is paid for (by taxpayers)!

Sorry, but I believe that America should take care of their own BEFORE helping everyone else!

IF they are so damed concerned with rights, then what about the taxpayer's rights? We have to pay taxes, obey the laws, etc. Why do they consider themselves above the law? I want each and every one of these "detained" people to tell us what would happen if we went to their country and demanded the things that they demand here in the United States.

La Raza is simply an anti-Caucasian hate group intent on creating a "race" where there is none.

And while I agree with you that we should go after employers of illegals (with prison and hard labor), putting illegals in prison before deportation would be wise too (with hard labor). Let both these criminal groups pay their own way, and not be a burden to the American CITIZENRY.

Migration is not a right because we have these things called "laws". You must follow each countries laws and procedures in order to visit a country, live in a country, work in a country or become a citizen of a country. I am American and I can not just go to another country and decide I want to live there unless I follow their procedures. These illegal immigrants are line jumpers and have come here hoping to stay but, that's a risk they took. It's not their right. They can't come here and demand things (immigration reform) and take things (benefits, etc.). They can't come here and be a drain on our tax resources. We need strong leadership on this issue now before it gets even worse. A 2 year temporary work visa is a joke. 2 years? That's the most temporary measure imaginable. One law that I am really against is the law that says if you are born here, you are a citizen. If I was traveling in Holland and I had a baby, that baby would not be a Dutch citizen. My understanding is that law in the US was made to give children of slaves citizenship - so the law served its purpose. I don't think the law was designed to give every border jumper's children citizenship. We need to amend/clarify that law . My 2 cents.

See, you've illustrated something wonderful about our country. I wholeheartedly disagree with many of your points, but I respect your opionion becuase your post is not without merit. You obviously stand up for what you believe in, and my guess (purely based off feel) is that you've carved out a nice life for yourself. Bravo, as I have done the same and I wish for everyone, to some extent, to have a safe and productive life. Unfortunately we disagree on many of the fundamental ideas behind immigration, one of which being how the US was founded. We accepted the masses of poor immigrants, and while there was plenty of ethnic tension in the country, we obviously made it through to the point where most ethnicities live harmoniously amongst eachother. With the influx of illegal immigrants from Mexico over the past few decades, we certainly have seen a strain on our resources and in some cases the criminal element from Mexico and Central/South America has spilled in to our country. Meanwhile, thousands if not millions of commerical and non-commercial farmers, landscapers, restauranteurs, auto mechanics, manufacturing companies, and other manual labor-driven companies have benefitted TREMENDOUSLY from these workers. Do the illegals turn around and send a bunch of their earnings back to their home countries? Sure. But do they spend millions upon millions of dollars at supermarkets, department stores, Walmarts/Targets, malls, restuarants, etc? Absolutely, and more than that they are self-sufficient more so than many Americans. Don't let anyone fool you- It's not as if there are even half as many confirmed illegal immigrants on welfare then Americans. There are not more illegals receiving unemployment benefits than US citizens. There are not more uninsured illegals receiving healthcare on taxpayers' dollars than US citizens. Is there a problem with illegal immigration that absolutely needs to be addressed? Certainly. But my last comment relates to compassion. You may have less than me, or you may feel that it's not your fault these people are born where they're born, and you're not a d-bag for believing either of these things. My belief is we need to be the gold standard for humanitarian efforts, but instead of going abroad and policing the rest of the world, we should be dealing with the issue in our backyard. That could entail figuring out what can be done to help boost the Central/South American economy, givie them a little help getting on their feet as respects certain areas (e.g. infrastructure, which US companies could then bid on and profit from), and working with their diplomats to ensure a healthy relationship with the entire North and South America. I realize this is a very idealistic view of the world, but at least I've provided a fathomable plan. If we took money away from our other ventures across the world (wars, "peacekeeping" efforts, etc), we'd have available funds to focus on the area of the world that needs our attention the most. Not only do they need our attention, but much more importantly, it could actually help our country as the need for immigrants to come to the US illegally could slowly decline. At the end of the day, that's what it's all about right?

Cute (predictable) comments by most, spewing hate, etc, at illegals. What I find interesting is that this bus drove through the entire Southeast with the "No papers, no Fear" sign on it – AND THEY WEREN'T STOPPED.
Sounds to me like the basis of the AZ law worked here. Yes, if you are pulled over for some other crime, etc, they can search your papers. However, this bus obviously did not break any traffic laws, etc, and so was allowed to continue on it's path. Was the bus stopped because of who was on it? Was it stopped because of the signs blatantly snubbing their nose at our immigration laws? NO. It was allowed to travel along, following the rules/laws of each state.
With all the venom over how this law would unfairly treat US citizens, I find it astonishing that those on board (here illegally) found it so easy to get from AZ to NC without any issue. Could it be that if you follow the rules (law), you really don't have anything to worry about??? Looks like we now have a bus-full of examples showing that maybe AZ wasn't so far off the mark after all!

If they want to be citizens of this country, go through the proper procedures like every other person who came to the U.S. and applied for their citizenship. My family came to the U.S. over 35 years ago and upon arrival, immediately applied for visas and green cards and eventually became legal citizens. I currently have friends that are still going through the naturalization process to obtain their legal status. So why should these people receive special treatment? I've come to notice that the only ethnicity complaining about immigration reform are of Mexican backgrounds. If they're tired of harassment from the authorities, heres some advice, APPLY FOR YOUR CITIZENSHIP, instead of running across the border and thinking you deserve special treatment because you've been here for an X amount of years. No matter how long you've been here, your status is still ILLEGAL.

There are reasons we have laws regarding immigration. These range from safety to social services. I'm sure at any one time there are probably 500 million people around the world that would love to move from Mexico, Africa or similar country to the US. We have 8% unemployment now. Our cities are declaring bankruptcy because they can't pay their bills. We are in the middle of a severe drought. Obviously our government and social systems cannot handle a mass influx of millions of people without collapsing. There are not enough jobs, benefits, food, water for this. They just want to go back to their credit cards and believing they can have everything they want immediately without really working for it, meanwhile blaming things on people who don't look like them. I'm not sure "us" is the proper term here. The ancestors of most people here today most likely came after the indian question was already fairly well settled. Also, they would have been well within their right to throw us out or kill us; evidence is that's what some did with the vikings. Look back, some tried with the new settlers; others sold settlers land.

Perhaps you should do a little homework on the history of immigration laws in the US. In the timeframe you refer to there were no quotas. The restrictions – on the other hand – were lovely concepts like the original rule limiting immigrants only to "white" people (our good old founding fathers); or the 1870 law specifically forbidding Chinese workers from immigrating. Finally in the mid 1920's they did put in quotas which were designed to preserve the exact ethnic balance at the time (anual quotas set at a percentage of those ethnic groups already in the country).

Have whatever opinion you want about what the immigration laws should be, but making up myths about "how it was" is just ridiculous.

Obviously the United States should just open its borders to everyone. We already spend a huge chunk of our national budget playing police for the rest of the world. We have no right to keep anyone out of our country because over 200 years ago some immigrants came here and killed a bunch of Indians and took their territory, so obviously those of us who weren't alive then should be held responsible and turn the US into a free hostile for the rest of the world. Never mind that most of us who's families immigrated to the US from Europe did so legally through Ellis Island. Never mind that anyone who immigrated to the northern US during the Civil War had to fight in the war in exchange for citizenship. Trying to have any sort of sovereignty in the US is obviously selfish.

ILLEGAL immigration is stealing from people who came here legalling. If you were born here, immigration is a non issue – the people who should be ticked off are the one's who spent a fortune to get here legalling – there are attorney fees and you have to wait your turn to have the paperwork processed. If someone out stays their visa, or crosses a border without paperwork they are "budging" in line in front of the person doing it correctly. Illigal immigration is not about racism as many people try to make it, it is about following the law.

There is no such thing as legal migration. We are not talking about geese here. Every country on the planet has laws affecting how, when and why people can enter or remain in their country. And these laws are as important as the laws against murder or theft. Disregard the laws at your own peril. Similarly, if a parent breaks the law and puts their children in an illegal position, why is the US government's job to go to "great pains" to solve the problem of splitting families? Where is the responsibiliy and accountability of the parents? Crime is defined by laws. If most people don't want to change the laws, they are still the law.

What you outlined is exactly the point Susan was making. LEGAL migration (i.e. becoming a citizen of another country by legally immegrating and fulfilling all legal citizenship requirements of that country) is a right. That is contrasted with illegal immegration... i.e. sneaking into a country and enjoying that country's taxpayer subsidized standard of living without actually becoming a citizen of that country or fulfilling the legal obligations common to the citizens of that country.

The people who organized this protest are obviously intelligent... some of them even have significant means at their disposal. So... it baffles me as to why none of these people have engaged themselves in the naturalization process. If you're ignorant of the process... that's fine, there are people who will educate you and then send you on your way. But if you KNOW about the process, and you have the ability to complete that process, why don't you? Moreover, why do you then look at the citizens of the United States and expect to recieve sympathy from them? Sorry... if you like this country enough to live here, you need to like this country enough to make yourself a part of it. If you refuse, you don't get to live here... that's just how it works (in every nation in the world, as far as I am aware)
