Shooting of Florida teen is no Trayvon Martin case, attorney says

By Tristan Smith, CNN

(CNN) - The attorney for a Florida man who shot at a car of teens over the weekend, killing one, says the incident bears no resemblance to the Trayvon Martin case.

Her client, Michael Dunn, is no "vigilante" but did feel threatened and shot out of "self defense," the attorney said.

"There are no comparisons to the Trayvon Martin situation," said Robin Lemonidis, Dunn's attorney. "He is devastated and horrified by the death of the teen."

Dunn, 45, was denied bond Monday on a murder charge stemming from the weekend shooting in Jacksonville. The violence was sparked by a confrontation about loud music at a gas station, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Dunn told authorities that he had asked the teens to turn down the blaring music from their vehicle adjacent to his, as he waited for his girlfriend to return to the car.

He heard threats from the teens, Dunn told police, he felt threatened and thought he saw a gun in the teens' car. He grabbed his gun and fired at least eight shots, authorities said.

Seventeen-year-old Jordan Davis, among the teens, was killed. There were no guns found inside the teens' car, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Ron Davis, the victim's father, said he is devastated and doesn't believe the shooting was self defense.

And i agree with Gwen 100%. The press is just escalating this by saying it is a white vs black shooting. What about bringing the family members of the man that was threatened by for people on the press instead of just having the parents of the perfect little angel that never did anything wrong and got shot for no reason. It makes me laugh, just like when the taxation Martin shooting happened all they did was show pics of him when he was 9 years old and in church. Not him flipping of the camera with a gold grill in his mouth with a sideways hat on acting like a thug. Our the pics of Zimmermann with his nose broken and his face all bloody. But no these people did nothing to deserve getting shot. Please!

The press is not even covering this like travon's case. This is actually worse and should be national news. That dude better burn! Zimmerman might have a sliver of a chance but this knucklehead is guilty as hell. Cause it is not a stand your ground case. That is why he ran.....!!!! If he would have been logical he would have called cops and walked away. But instead he acted on emotion like the kids hurt is ego or something. So now some redneck is gonna think a death sentence is warranted if some kid talks smack to you... If this idiot wins.

Your monikor, "armed citizen," is absolutely reprehensible. You are not the police. Nor do we need your vigiliante mentality. Trayvon Martin was going out for Skittles. He did not have a mouth full of gold teeth and his hat turned sideways, not that that would matter in your make believe Chuck Norris world. He had on a hoodie, which was none of Zimmerman's business, nor would it be any of yours. Zimmerman, like you, was a self-styled vigilante with a punk mentality. He accosted a kid who was on an errand, terrifying him. If the kid fought back, that is Zimmerman's problem. And Zimmerman will be convicted, and rightfully so.

Let me rephrase. Rights are exercised. Gun ownership is a privilege that should be very selectively bestowed.

I understand whites may commit more crimes than blacks but realize what race makes up the majority of the prison population in the U.S. Look at the 100-1 disparity. Why is 5 grams of crack get you a mandatory 5 years vs 500 grams of cocaine get you the same 5 years. Why can't we as americans just realize that when it comes to black people that we always get the short end of the stick

Not sure why Dunn's lawyer Robin Lemonidis is publicly defending her client and supporting his story. Trying to influence the jury pool? If so, Ms. Lemonidis, please answer:

Why did he scream at the teenagers, in a public space, to turn their music down? That's not standing your ground, that's impinging on someone else's territory. Why was no gun found when your client claimed he saw one? Were the witnesses on the scene in on it? When someone's been shot, is the first reaction of total strangers to frisk the victim for a gun and get rid of it in case of a court action? Why did Dunn leave the scene and force police to track him down.?

I think you talk too much, Ms. Lemonidis.

yo, this is being going since black people arrived in America. Its just plain out racism in action and unfortunately another young black brother had to die because of it. This is why we walk around angry at white people and ready to ride on them for whatever. I’m not advocating for a violent protest [...]

This is why we walk around angry at white people and ready to ride on them for whatever. I'm not advocating for a violent protest but dammit these types of racist acts has to seize and it starts with us black people having more representation in Congress so that we can change some of these laws that permits the murder and incarceration of the black race.

Guy kills unarmed black teen. Hey, he should create an online site asking for donations. Doing so enriched GZ by tens of thousands of dollars. I suspect those same donors would gladly donate to Dunn as well.
