Immigrants lead plunge in U.S. birth rate

By Moni Basu, CNN

(CNN) - It makes sense that since the start of the recession, the birth rate in America has been declining.

In 2011, it dipped to the lowest rate ever recorded: 63.2 per 1,000 women between 15 and 44, the prime childbearing ages, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That plunge was led by immigrant women, according to a Pew Research Center analysis released Thursday.

The birth rate for U.S.-born women declined 6% between 2007 (when the recession began) and 2010. However, the rate for foreign-born women plunged 14%, more than in the 17 years before the downturn.

Both foreign- and U.S.-born Hispanic women had larger drops in birth rate than any other group, Pew found. That correlates with larger percentage declines in household wealth for Hispanics than in white, black or Asian households.

Among women from Mexico, the country from where the largest number of U.S. immigrants come, the birth rate fell by 23%.

"If you apply the common sense lens here, when it comes to decisions about when to have children, how many and how to space them, the economy clearly matters," said Bill Albert, spokesman for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.

Even so, Albert warned that any single reason is unlikely to explain an issue as complex as national fertility rates and as profound and personal as the decision to have children.

He said other factors - including people choosing to get married at a later age and a 48% decrease in teen birth rates since their peak in 1991 - may also be playing a role in the decline of the nation's overall birth rate.

The drop reversed a trend in which immigrant mothers were responsible for a rising share of births in the United States, Pew found. In 2007, for instance, foreign-born mothers accounted for 25% of U.S. births, compared with 16% in 1990. In 2010, that share dropped to 23%.

The Pew report's co-author, Gretchen Livingston, said birth rates among foreign-born women have been higher than native-borns for a variety of reasons.

The 2010 birth rate for foreign-born women was 87.8 per 1,000, nearly 50% higher than the rate for U.S.-born women, the Pew report said. Of the 4 million births in America, 930,000 were to immigrants.

Many new mothers are Hispanics, who traditionally have had more children than U.S.-born women, Livingston said.

Immigrants are less educated on average and are more likely to be married. Some bring with them cultural norms from their homelands that can dictate a necessity to have several children.

"What we see with immigrants coming into this country is, they tend to reflect birth rates in their own country," said Robert Walker, president of the Population Institute in Washington.

In some cases, immigrant family sizes can rise as income levels go up in America. The gloomy economy in the past few years has clearly played a role in having fewer children, he said.

Among the Pew study's other findings:

• A majority of births to U.S.-born women (66%) in 2010 were to white mothers, while the majority of births to foreign-born women (56%) were to Hispanic mothers.

• Teens account for a higher share of births to U.S.-born moms (11% in 2010) than to immigrants (5%). That number is linked to the age profile of immigrants.

• Immigrant women accounted for fully 33% of births to women 35 and older in 2010.

Livingston pointed to how the overall birth rate of the United States has stayed relatively constant compared with that of some European nations that have experienced declining populations. Immigrant women in America, she said, have held that number up.

The Pew Research Center's projections indicate that immigrants will continue to play a large role in U.S. population growth: Immigrants arriving since 2005 and their descendants will account for 82% of U.S. population growth by 2050.

The report said this about the future: "Even if the lower immigration influx of recent years continues, new immigrants and their descendants are still projected to account for most of the nation’s population increase by mid-century."

It's difficult to say how birth rates will be affected when the economy improves and people feel fatter in their pocketbooks. Population experts say it's a fair assumption that the birth rate may go up again. One thing is for sure: The face of America will look very different in a few decades.

Americans are worried about Mexicans while Indians and Chinese flood into the US and will be taking over. California is already lost to Asians. They come in scores and produce in very high numbers. Realize that Mexico's population is only 110 million while China and India's populations add up to 3 billion. And nobody should come up with the utter nonsense of being legal and illegal. There are a lot of legal Indians and Chinese in this country who don't at all fit in, they don't speak English and they get dressed as if back home while taking a shower once every other week. Americans in their right mind would prefer an illegal alien who fit in over these people any day. Don't fall for the games, your attention is diverted. If no action is taken, USA and Europe will turn into majority Chinese/Indian nations.

Diane- yes, thank you. I think the good news is you are correct, the fact that asians and indians will out number the rest of us. These cultures understand, and respect self-responsibility. Thank god, they are the last on this planet to hold this wonderful principal. The blacks and others do not like this fact for good reason, this vast group of people will demonstrate to all of us what the American dream is really about- working for success. Not being entertainers, sports heros etc. Developing ideas/products and services that actually have value to others..., the faster we get these groups integrated in to our society, be better chance this country has to survive in the new decades. Welcome Asians and Indians, we admire you.

What a biased slanted way of expressing the stats. What they are really saying is that in the past where immigrants had say 7 kids, now they are having 5. Yes this is a big 'drop' in birth rate 'led' by immigrants, but the fact is they still breed like rabbits or Palestinians.

ABC's 20/20 filmed a evangelical couples for the past several years for their big family, this year they have 18 children. The husband told the journalist that he didn't apply any welfare but when the journalist shot back,"But you take 18 child tax credit every year." He was speechless. Still, even w/o health insurance(a local doctor offered free care for the family) and having to buy clothes in goodwill, the couples vowed to compete with other family who has 21 children. This whole group has no birth control, and every couples have over a dozen children w/o intention to stop producing a child. It's also appalling to hear their children would also follow their parents' path to have children as many as they can. Have those people even thought about the rest of the world? Or are they only living in the fantasy of their bible

I would like to know where these facts came from. Every Spanish speaking female that I see has four or more kids following along after her, one in the basket and another in her basket. Then she pays for groceries with food stamps. They don't want to control the population and have a baby when they can not when they want a baby. We support them and why not over populate the earth.

I keep hearing that we need to help the people in Africa. The only way that I will donate to them is in the form of birth control. What does it take to understand that if you already have a large hungry family of children the worst thing is to add more? These people seem to expect others to feed their families. Sad but true. The more they have the more money they can get. There is nothing more tragic than a hungry baby. Never does anyone dare speak the words BIRTH CONTROl when speaking about helping the Congo or Africa.

"The death rate fell. Famine became rarer. The population growth rate was cut in half, thanks chiefly to the fact that as babies stop dying, people stop having so many of them. Over the past 50 years, worldwide food production per capita has risen, even as the global population has doubled. Indeed, so successful have farmers been at increasing production that food prices fell to record lows in the early 2000's...Meanwhile, family size continues to shrink on every continent. The world's population will probably never double again." Look up "S-curve". It's a statistical function that so far has been used to model the population. We're coming over the curve.

I am now early 60's and so glad I made that choice so long ago. For starters: Why do we allow people that would never be allowed to adopt a child to breed child after child, totally out of control, in this dangerously overpopulated world? Food for thought....

Definitely agree. Anyone who knows how to calculate exponents realizes that if the population continues to increase eventually the weight of all the people on the planet will increase to more than the weight of the earth – an impossible situation. Anyone who knows logic realizes that this means that eventually population growth must become zero or negative. There are two scenarios possible – either we limit population growth by choice or we experience population decline due to disaster, i.e., wars, famines, floods. The time is now to start working on negative population growth. We need to make birth control available everywhere – even Saudi Arabia and the Vatican. Abortion must stay legal. It is the only way we can save lives on earth.

It's not the Western World that needs to have a negative population, we need to educate women in 3rd world countries. When the education of women rises, the fertility rate lowers, just honest truth. So instead of taking the Hitler route, we should maybe take a more civil "educate them" route. If you want the population of the world to lower itself, donate to causes that educate women in 3rd world countries.

You can be an immigrant AND a U.S. citizen. Immigrant means you were not born in the US, but you can be naturalized or have a green card. People tend to be so misguided about the word.

99.99% of the Cubans in Miami are legal residents, either naturalized U.S. citizens or green card holders. U.S. law has a provision that encourages Cubans to come to the U.S. illegally and grants them automatic asylum upon entry, it is called Cuban Adjustment Act. So, they are not really illegal if the U.S. is inviting them to come in by whatever means and gives them papers immediately.

Yeah don't believe this guy about cubans, a lot of them came over in the early 90s and are completely legal immigrants. Man most of them have U.S. citizenship by now, some of them don't, some of them still very much so think of them as cubans, but most of the people you are talking about are extremely naturalized, and a good portion of them were children when they came over, thus growing up in the American education system which everyone knows is just a place to naturalize you into being a propoer American more than it is to give you any useful education (hey I'm in college now, I really didn't learn jack squat, even being in Honors and AP level classes, in highschool, that helped me in college, we need to revamp that, emphasis on logic in grade school would help)

I see expectant women from all walks of life everywhere I go, now days. Also, I'm a so-called "Latina" (American of Mexican ancestry) who opted to stay single and childless and I recall that about 10-15 years ago, other Hispanic folks would question my decision, but that's just not the case anymore. I see more and more American women of Hispanic decent opting to remain single and childless as a means to retain a better quality of life. Plus, children were once seen as a necessity, whereas now I think they're a luxury.

I ask all the other bashers on here: who is going to be working to pay for your old asses if nobody has kids or there isn't immigration? Every two people need to have two kids just to keep up. Our economy and retirement programs are not based on just keeping up, they're reliant on economic growth....we need to grow our population at a modest rate in order to remain succesful. I'm sorry if you are white and dissapointed that in 50 years most people will not be, but it's going to happen and it's not all bad. This will come like news to many that have fixed biases on hispanic as their dogma. But that ethinc group generally has in mind the well being of their family to-come as they no longer believe that kids are heaven-sent. The economy, however, and the people's need to explore other things before getting into the responsibility that two or more children brings makes them think twice and wait longer, hence the plunge.

The problem will show itself better in about 18 years when there will not be as big a supply of healthy-battle-ready boys ready to defend the American way of life...

Once again, your comment misses the mark. There are numerous sound reasons why immigration levels need to be curbed. Environmental reasons are perhaps the most pressing. The north american continent is a vastly different place than it was when the Pilgrams landed. And there is also the rule of law that every soverign country has a right and an obligation to enforce and which the illegal immigrant show scant regard.

      • Mr. Reb

Once again, there are enough sound reasons to argue against the high immigration levels and illegal immigration without having to resort to questioning how safe or moral this incoming immigrants are. I believe that there are a lot of good people coming in as immigrants, I just think that at this point in time, we have more than a sufficient supply of people and I believe that lawful entry is not asking too much. Not every down-and-out person/family can come to this country–there is simply not enough space. Do not misconsture that I think all immigrants are down-and-out but many that come in are unskilled and end up on public assistance of one type or another. And, looking back, I'm sure as well that many Native Americans probably wish they had kept the White Man at bay but that point is moot to the current discussion. For the record, I am not Anti-Immigrant but I do believe in lawful entry and a more reasonable level of immigration in general.

A majority of births to U.S.-born women (66%) in 2010 were to white mothers. What's the problem, No more Kennedy clans that take up an entire pew in church. So birth control kept quiet by Catholics maybe the problem or is it the solution. We made it threw the great depression. Where the majority of white people were given handouts. How screwd up is the Duke Eye Center in Durham? They charged me $16,000 for right eye cat surg. Two months later, they charged me $18,000 for the left eye surg. Same doc same procudure same complexity same medicine. Called on 10-30-12 & again this morning 11-30-12. They haven't done a darm thing on my compliant of billing error. How long does it take a Duke genius to compare just 2 numbers & esplain the screw up? The problem has not been solved yet.

There are only 5 items in the bill 4 seem to match. Just the medication part doesn't. $2500 Vs $4500 for the same medicine amount & dose size.

If Duke can't do it (compare 2 numbers in 30 days & esplain), red necks in Kentucky certainly can't.

Even with a greater percentage of decreasing birth rates, immigrant birth rates are still higher than native born citizens. And, it's not about immigrants being bad for America but has to do with the high numbers of immigrants coming into the country both legally and illegally. Even at current population levels we can't seem to destroy the very fabric that supports our existence fast enough nevermind supporting an influx of one to two million additional people yearly that tend to like big families.

(to include that FREE education their children received while here. I imagine our national debt would decrease significantly)

As the country struggles due to an every increasing population spurred on by the unecessarily high immigration quotas and lax enforcement, we shall see how thankful our country is. But it is not just the democrats who are responsible for this mess; the republicans have their fair share in the blame.

Charge their countries? What do we do when they don't pay, turn it over to a collection agency?

Yes, FREE education for children is a terrible thing ... better have them grow up and be uneducated and contribute less to our society, taxes, etc ... education is an investment.

The problem is if people know they can cross the border illegally and be guaranteed free education for their children, health care from emergency departments and medical clinics, drivers licenses, and other social service, they are going to keep coming. I'm sure if I ws struggling for a better life and new what was waiting after a difficult journey across the border I would go as well. But, understanding and condoning are two different things. The U.S. is sending a mixed messaged to illegal immigrants by having laws on the one hand for legal entry and on the othe hand not only often looking the other way but providing these services.
