Penn State sorority sisters denigrate Mexicans in party photo

By Moni Basu, CNN

(CNN) - Penn State has had its share of controversy for a while, but this week it is getting some more unwanted attention.

The university's Chi Omega sorority chapter is under investigation after a photo with Mexican stereotypes surfaced on a social media site.

It shows a group of sorority members dressed in ponchos and sombreros and wearing fake mustaches. One woman holds a sign that says: "Will mow lawn for weed + beer." Another sign says: "I don't cut grass. I smoke it."

The photograph was taken at a Mexican-themed party around Halloween, according to the independent college blog, Onward State. It was posted last week on Tumblr.

The university's Panhellenic Council said it had received concerns about the photo and that the council does not condone derogatory behavior from members.

"The Penn State Panhellenic Council recognizes the offensive nature of the photo and is therefore taking the matter very seriously," the executive board said in a statement.

"We are addressing the situation immediately with the members of the chapter in conjunction with their national headquarters," it said. "Our council and all its members strive to hold ourselves to a high standard and are disappointed by any failure to meet these expectations."

Jessica Riccardi, president of the Chi Omega chapter at Penn State, released an apology to The Daily Collegian newspaper.

“Our chapter of Chi Omega sincerely apologizes for portraying inappropriate and untrue stereotypes," she said. "The picture in question does not support any of Chi Omega’s values or reflect what the organization aspires to be."

The connections to the sorority were discovered through members' names tagged on Facebook, Onward State said. The posts have since been taken down.

Penn State public relations director Lisa Powers said that university officials have had conversations with Chi Omega members and that the women have expressed "deep remorse."

"The students in the photo are within their First Amendment rights to express themselves in this way, although we are certainly appalled that they would display this level of insensitivity and lack of judgment," Powers said.

"Because the right of free expression is guaranteed under the Constitution - for both behaviors we disagree with or for those that we support - we are approaching this as a teachable moment to engage this group of young women in discussions about their actions and to further educate them about diversity issues," she said.

Powers said the national leadership of Chi Omega will have to decide if disciplinary action is warranted.

A statement from Chi Omega headquarters said, "Personal degradation has no place in our organization, even if such behavior is meant facetiously or in jest. The Chi Omega national organization is taking this situation very seriously and is being thoughtful and deliberate regarding any sanctions or educational directives for the chapter."

At least one student at Penn State demanded a direct apology from Chi Omega to all Latinos.

"This is not a joke. This is our culture," said Ariel Coronel, president of the Penn State Latino Caucus.

She was shocked when she first saw the photo and said the signs the women were holding were especially offensive.

"There's a huge drug war going on in Mexico and you have a sign that says, 'We will mow lawns for weed and beer,' " Coronel said. "It's wrong on so many levels. How can you think this is OK?"

The reactions to the incident varied on Twitter. Here are two:

The comments at Penn State are so true. The ILLEGAL mexicans in Texas pay no taxes, get free school, get free medical and drink and smoke all the time. And yes most of them mow yards because no one checks the legal status. I can drive down any to two locations right now where they are sitting waiting for someone to put them to work with no taxes being paid

Open your eyes people, I see whites, Asians, Latinos and even black in that group. This isn't a white/Mexican thing, this is a group of young adults having fun. I'm white and can't jump or dance, does that mean all of us can't? Of course not, yet they still use it. Get over it and stop being so stuck on yourselves.

I love all the hateful messed up emails on here. It just makes me happier that racist white people like the ones posting hateful things are getting bred out of this world. One day we will be a race of people so mixed none of this will make a difference. Certainly appears so by the reelection of my president. Good bye racist white people. It's a different world coming and you won't exist in it. LOL

They can mock all they want, in the meantime each one of my very Latina daughters will be quietly, in turn: a) Half-way through her post-grad. b) Working on her presentation for a business loan. c)Polishing up on her grades to get into medical school.

Like I said, they can mock and goof off all they want, the cold, bitter dread in their bellies will come soon enough in the real world after college, when they realize that they have to address women like my daughters as "no ma'am," and "yes ma'am."

It's time to get over "being offended". There are no protections from being offended, in fact the 1rst amendment protects speech that is offensive. Get a thicker skin. Just about anything could be offensive to someone, so what? Freedom includes the right to be judgmental, crass, rude, condecending, and offensive. Anyone who is trying to silence voices expressing such ideas is NOT supporting true liberty and freedom of speech, and in my opinion is being discriminatory as well. Stop trying to cloak yourselves in "we are better than you" politically correct garbage. You trample diversity by trying to force one "nice only" idea of expression!

I think this article is blown way out of proportion. When people dress up as Jasmine, you don't see Indian people getting offended. It's like Halloween- You can dress how you want. They went to a Mexican themed party, so what. I'm sure you've all gone to a "White Trash" Themed party, thats pretty offensive. Not saying I'm white or anything, but I'm sure they didn't have any intentions on acting on how they dressed. So we should all take a step back, and relax. Because now this chapter is going to have to deal with unnecessary issues for just being in college.

Having a "Mexican-themed party" and having everyone dressed in ponchos with big mustaches and sombreros is an attack on what they think a Mexican is. A culture is not a costume . You say you're Italian lets say we have an "Italian theme party" and everyone shows up looking like Mob-like figures, you would be OK with your Italian culture being portrayed as Mobsters ? Lets say they had a " Black Themed" party and everyone shows up wearing dark face paint what if they showed up in wife beaters and saggy pants with toy guns, You think that would be an accurate representation of the black race? What if they had an "Arab Theme" party, would it be an accurate representation of Arabs if they all showed up looking like terrorist? This was ignorant to do on all levels by an insensitive group of girls.

      • GEdwards

They probably should cancel the upcoming "Western theme party" then.

Dressing up in cowboy boots and cowboy hats must therefore be an attack on what they think an American is.

WESTERN THEME is not a Race it's a group of people which includes the Spanish Indian Culture which is where Cowboys derive from . If they would have said "lets have a Siesta Theme Party " this picture would be accurate.

"WESTERN THEME is not a Race it's a group of people..."

Mexico is not a race either. Sombreros and ponchos are mostly associated with Mexico. Just like cowboy hats and boots are mostly associated with the USA (hearken back to US Olympians walking into some opening ceremonies).

Are you trying to claim that even saying, "I feel like Mexican tonight" should be considered racist?

BTW, I disagree with accuracy if it was "siesta-themed." How does a sombrero and poncho represent siesta?

True – we all need to calm down and not lose our minds over every little thing. However, this is pretty nasty. These women have enough money to pay dues/chapter fees at a sorority on top of tuition. And then they mock the immigrant who has to do yard work to make ends meet. And post it. Ann Coulter would be proud. Way to keep it classy, Chi O's.

Does every Latino you know smoke weed? Is every Latino you know a migrant worker or day laborer? These stereotypes are what made it easy to deny jobs and education to minorities for years. You are obviously so above your relatives that you don't mind them being ridiculed by dingbats who have never struggled for a thing. But I will not single out Penn State for this...thousands of colleges get away with similar incidents every year...

To the Twitter comment by Greg Woll I would offer this:

It is one thing to inadvertently offend someone, using a term or perhaps making an offhand comment that in hindsight can be seen as a failed attempt at humor that turned out otherwise. In this case, however, the photograph, particularly the signs, was not a casual "let's take a picture" situation. I doubt anyone would have been significantly offended had the group simply taken a picture, and although the dress might be a bit stereotypical and in poor taste, I suspect there wouldn't have been much outrage. The signs weren't something somebody's "casual, offhand remark."

We do, indeed, sometimes worry too much about being PC, but these young ladies spent some time intending to denigrate others, and therein is the difference. A thicker skin might shed more comments, but it won't protect you from someone with a knife!

"I'm white and don't know what it's like to experienced racism, but those minorities should just lighten up."

"Racism sort of sounds like race and Mexicans are an ethnic group so it can't be racism."

      Interesting post, considering....
      – Most hispanics are white.
      – Mexican is neither a race nor an ethnicity. It's a nationality.
      – Those of Mexican heritage who AREN'T offended speak as much for everyone of Mexican decent, as those who ARE offended. The latter shouldn't trump the former, which proves the former's point that this should not be an issue.

America ... land of the sometimes free, home of the offended.
Get over it people. You know what is offensive? Truly offensive? Is people trying to cram (debatable) popular opinion (or what the media thinks should be popular opinion) down everyone's throat as if it's against the law to have an opinion that you simply don't like somebody, or some group.
GET OVER YOURSELVES AND GROW SOME STONES!
You know what freedom is? It's not living in a place where you will never hear a word that offends you. It means you live in a place where you can hear someone else's opinion, be they a neighbor/fellow civilian, boss, law enforcement, armed forces or politicians, and can freely speak your mind in return.
Is the image stereotypical? Sure. Do you honestly think the sorority despises Latinos instead of simply thinking they were being funny? I hope not but hey, that's what the media wants you to think so I'm sure some of you do.
We'll never get past our race relations issues until we can stop simply being offended for no reason and also tell the media to STFU. No ... not to stop reporting news of real racially motivated crimes but for making mountains (so called news) out of mole hills because drama crap like this is what sells, regardless of the lingering damage it helps perpetuate.
The problems are going to disappear if we ignore them but, they also aren't going to go away do to over sensitivity.

I am hispanic, and I am not offended..,it is silly though, a sense of telling everyone not knowing Mexico,., let's send these bunch of nice girls to Mexico to really know Mexicans the way they should., maybe not all but the ones with the cardboards.., before I went there I had wrong ideas of how they were..,trust me if you think the food is like taco bell in every corner.., you will be surprise., but I think also making this a big deal is wrong..

YUP! Introduce these girls to the pimps that are in Tijuana. They'll teach them the finer points of respect!

I'm Mexican and this does not bother me. We all just remember the negative aspects of different ethnic groups, this is just another case. Would it be the same if I said that most of those girls have had at least one abortion before?

It offends me and I am not Mexican. But, I have Mexican American friends.

I'm Hispanic. Everyone's always looking to see who's offending who, it doesn't bother me one bit and it's all in good fun. All these comedians that can get up and talk about different races and people laugh at it, no one gets offended and if you had a problem with it you wouldn't be there. If you don't like it, move on because anyone out there that says that they don't laugh when someone makes a joking remark about another race is lying. It's a joke and if that's howthose girls in the picture really feel or don't, we'll never know. It's not changing how I go about my day.

What I want to know is why CNN thought this was important enough to make the front page of their website. I would think there are more important things to report on.

The parents of these young ladies must be so proud. I am sure that they will forever post this picture to commemorate the thousands of dollars they wasted on their daughters education. As for the young ladies, I do not know what their majors are, but good luck in finding a job after graduation, with this posting, in your backgrounds.

The truly sad thing here, aside from the cheap ethnocentric racism, is that these coddled sorority girls are wasting their parents' money and pretending to get an education. It is pretty clear from the photo they have wasted their parents hard earned cash! Hope Mommy and Daddy are proud of your exploits in Happy Valley! Maybe a field trip to the Sierra Madre Orientale would do you all some good. Pendejas!

"This is not a joke. This is our culture" Speaking English in this country is part of American culture yet plenty of latinos seem to forget that. Many do not even bother to assimilate into our culture....and it is rude and intolerant.

Look up the official language of the US States Of America. I myself am working on my third language, Deutsch 🙂 . I would love it if my USA would make it a habit to learn more than just English.

Why is speaking English mandatory? My father, the Norwegian, learned French, German, Dutch, as part of his education in public schools. We think that English is a magic language?

You speak any other languages? If you can make one sentence from your high school language class I would be surprised.
So, better stay in English speaking countries, if you go somewhere else, they will think you are rude for not speaking their language.

Some of you reallllyyy need to get out of Central PA sometime soon. No matter if it was done in jest or not, it's offensive and rude to a certain group of people. No sorority should be offensive to anybody, they should be trying to enrich the community and their school. Bunch of ignorant little girls.
