Penn State sorority sisters denigrate Mexicans in party photo

By Moni Basu, CNN

(CNN) - Penn State has had its share of controversy for a while, but this week it is getting some more unwanted attention.

The university's Chi Omega sorority chapter is under investigation after a photo with Mexican stereotypes surfaced on a social media site.

It shows a group of sorority members dressed in ponchos and sombreros and wearing fake mustaches. One woman holds a sign that says: "Will mow lawn for weed + beer." Another sign says: "I don't cut grass. I smoke it."

The photograph was taken at a Mexican-themed party around Halloween, according to the independent college blog, Onward State. It was posted last week on Tumblr.

The university's Panhellenic Council said it had received concerns about the photo and that the council does not condone derogatory behavior from members.

"The Penn State Panhellenic Council recognizes the offensive nature of the photo and is therefore taking the matter very seriously," the executive board said in a statement.

"We are addressing the situation immediately with the members of the chapter in conjunction with their national headquarters," it said. "Our council and all its members strive to hold ourselves to a high standard and are disappointed by any failure to meet these expectations."

Jessica Riccardi, president of the Chi Omega chapter at Penn State, released an apology to The Daily Collegian newspaper.

“Our chapter of Chi Omega sincerely apologizes for portraying inappropriate and untrue stereotypes," she said. "The picture in question does not support any of Chi Omega’s values or reflect what the organization aspires to be."

The connections to the sorority were discovered through members' names tagged on Facebook, Onward State said. The posts have since been taken down.

Penn State public relations director Lisa Powers said that university officials have had conversations with Chi Omega members and that the women have expressed "deep remorse."

"The students in the photo are within their First Amendment rights to express themselves in this way, although we are certainly appalled that they would display this level of insensitivity and lack of judgment," Powers said.

"Because the right of free expression is guaranteed under the Constitution - for both behaviors we disagree with or for those that we support - we are approaching this as a teachable moment to engage this group of young women in discussions about their actions and to further educate them about diversity issues," she said.

Powers said the national leadership of Chi Omega will have to decide if disciplinary action is warranted.

A statement from Chi Omega headquarters said, "Personal degradation has no place in our organization, even if such behavior is meant facetiously or in jest. The Chi Omega national organization is taking this situation very seriously and is being thoughtful and deliberate regarding any sanctions or educational directives for the chapter."

At least one student at Penn State demanded a direct apology from Chi Omega to all Latinos.

"This is not a joke. This is our culture," said Ariel Coronel, president of the Penn State Latino Caucus.

She was shocked when she first saw the photo and said the signs the women were holding were especially offensive.

"There's a huge drug war going on in Mexico and you have a sign that says, 'We will mow lawns for weed and beer,' " Coronel said. "It's wrong on so many levels. How can you think this is OK?"

The reactions to the incident varied on Twitter. Here are two:

I think brick and mortar universities are walking advertisements for online education. All they seem to be now are houses of ill repute. If you want a prestige degree, most universities offer degrees online, including Harvard. If I was a parent of a college age child, I would be hesitant to send them to Animal House.

Ever notice how liberals have successfully turned the word "republican" into a bad word?

This whole chain is about stereotyping and here is a liberal stereotyping and telling themselves "it's OK if I do it"

It's either all OK, or all bad. Personally I think we need thicker skin as a nation so fire away liberal people. Maybe copying and pasting your comments back to you will help you see your hypocrisy.

Hey, we need to get onto Jimmy Fallon for those Capital One commercials. In one of them he wears an apron, holds dough, wears a fake moustache and talks with an Italian accent. What?! Does he think all Italians are pizza makers? No, he just realizes that the general population relates that activity to Italians. We of course know Mexicans don't walk around in the U. S. wearing the type of clothing the girls are wearing in the picture, but isn't it true that many landscapers/gardeners are of Mexican decent? Is there any shame in that? Is it really racist to acknowledge it? Isn't Basketball a sport dominated by black Americans? I don't think many believe the girls were trying to say Mexicans will mow your yard for weed and beer. I promise you they won't. Actually, I really don't undersatnd the use of the Mexican garb anymore than that gardening/landscaping is a popular profession with Mexicans. What was the reason for the picture in the first place? I don't see anything in the article that says why. They could have worn overalls and offended farmers. They did not think this through well enough. There are other types of "landscaper" uniforms that I think we'd all recognize so the same point could have been made without any reference to Mexicans. If they just want weed and beer, get naked!

Anyone heard all the redneck jokes and stereo types. They are funny. How about the people from India. How about blondes. I guess when something is true it hits home more then anything, and comedians use that for laughter. How about the comic that uses a dummy that is a Muslim terrorist to crack jokes. Has anyone seen that. It is funny and it does not mean that everyone thinks that all Muslims are terrorists. Why is CNN not all over that comedian. He even says the kill word in his diatribe. If they had dressed has hillbillies and had some funny placards it would have not stirred up anything controversial of made CNN. If they showed some white hippies and and the signs read the exact same thing would it be a big deal. After all their are girls that are of other ethnicity in that group. So in reality because of their diverse range of color in that group they could not say anything funny about anyone I guess. Come on, I don't cut grass I smoke it. Now put long hair on them and pretend they are long haired Americans. Would that have made CNN.

They are white. They can't say anything degrading without major retribution. This country has become so PC and us white people are forced to baby everyone now. They made a joke! Get over it! There are Mexicans at Lowe's looking to mow your lawn. That is why so many people make a joke about it. If it wasn't a something that Mexicans do then people would never say it. You don't say a Mexican should join the Black Panthers. That doesn't make sense. You don't wear a doo rag and say you are dressed like you are Chinese. You dress as another race because that is not your race. A black man can't go as a black man for Halloween. He could go as an African because that is not who he is though. Stereotyping is not wrong. It is wrong to HATE a race because you believe the stereotype is more true than false. I heard a black comedian one day on You Tube. He said "White people make fun of us and say that we eat fried chicken and watermelon. Who the hell doesn't like fried chicken and watermelon?"

Well, there's a big difference if white people make fun of people of color vs. people of color making fun of whites.
I think we can agree in society that whites are at the top of the hierarchy (just look at professional jobs - who's your doctor, who's your professor, your dentist?) I'm pretty confident that those answers are "white people."
And when whites, the dominant group, "jokingly" make fun of a subordinate group, it perpetuates the oppression of the subordinate group - all the while thinking "it's ok."

  38. Chris

To be honest, I'm glad this made national news. There are too many people who are ignorant to racism or are "tired of it." But you know what, racism is a topic that SHOULD be discussed; it affects EVERYONE. Even if you say, "I'm not racist" or that "race doesn't happen to me," that doesn't mean you have prejudices or that you practice *covert* racism. And to those who race doesn't happen to them, honey, you should take another look at the world through a different analytical lens.
Re Chi Omega: Themed parties using racial themes happen all over the US on college campuses, unfortunately. (We had this issue and other racial issues on my college campus, as well).
And through this, being "comical" Mexican/Latino or Native American costumes for Halloween (or other reasons) is normalized. "Nothing is wrong," or "it was only meant as a joke" don't work for this case. If anything, the costumes are misrepresenting racial and ethnic populations.
And especially shame on the students of color in the photo for participating in this event. People of color are being systematically and personally oppressed, and you have the courage and ignorance to perpetuate the oppression?
I think this country needs an eye opener about racism; it still exists, and more people need to acknowledge that.

I never saw anywhere in the picture that they are "mocking" Mexicans, CNN's words, not mine.

They are having a costume Party, yes, like many costume parties, and it is right after Halloween.

Just because people dress up like the Tooth Fairy, on Halloween, doesn't mean they're mocking the Tooth Fairy. Just because they dress up like a Demon, with blood dripping down the front of their shirt, doesn't mean they support or advocate hanging out with demons. I have been to parties where they all dress up in Togas, that doesn't mean in any way that we were mocking Greeks!@

How can you seriously contend the signs about recreational drug use do not call to mind extremely negative (and very largely false) stereotypes about Mexicans? That is mockery. And by the way, it is ancient Roman men who are stereotyped as wearing togas, not ancient "Greeks." That stereotype isn't nearly as negative as the recreational drug use stereotype called to mind here against Mexicans is, anyway (the stereotype of Roman men wearing togas probably isn't negative at all). And ancient Romans are history anyway, while Mexicans still flourish, and happeen to do a lot of work for this country.

As if other demographics/ethnicities/etc don't crack a joke about dumb white girls and post it/share it. Love the double standard. If they were running out into the street intentionally mocking a race, ok, that's just mean-spirited...but obviously nobody that was involved was offended by this.

ONE EX employee abused children. ONE. There is ZERO evidence that anyone else at PSU knew the depth of Sandusky's depravity - after all, the state's DA didn't see it after an investigation, the state's Child Protective Services psychologists didn't see it, and the state's Department of Welfare didn't see it; they repeatedly approved him to adopt and foster children. And an aging football coach was supposed to know better than experts in the field of child abuse?? Or an AD?? Educate yourself on pedophiles; they fool EVERYONE. Girls just want to have fun. They didn't shoot anyone, they didn't enter the country illegally – they were having a theme party and as in all parties they joked around. The real insult is when any "culture" cannot take a joke and laugh with others at themselves. If these girls really wanted to "insult" anyone – they could have done a much better job at it. This nation has so many problems to fix – what is done at a sorority party should not warrant any coverage or"debate".

Racially, Hispanics are from Hispania otherwise known as Spain, and by being from Spain makes them white Europeans. Now being ethnically hispanic means something totally different, which i FORCEFULLY disagree with. i am 50% American Indian (Kitowah or Keetowah Cherokee depending on tsalagi dialect) and 50% Irish American...so i have red skin and red hair....the EEOC calls me a hispanic because of this. What are you talking about? The EEO doesn't classify people. Employers ask employees to SELF IDENTIFY themselves for EEO_1 reports, Currently, there are seven race/ethnicity categories: Hispanic or Latino, White, Black or African-American, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, Asian, American Indian or Alaska Native, and Two or More Races. If an employee declines to self-identify, you can rely on visual identification of the employee or post-employment records. Anyway, you could self identify as "two or more races".

I mean come on what happened to people of any color being able to take a joke. I have friends who are hispanic and black and they found this hillarious in fact most people find this funny. It is only the select few who want nothing more than to start a racial war in this country that are making a big deal out of this. Its time people quit getting themselves so worked up over nothing. This country has much bigger things to worry about then a meaningless college joke. New Rule... WhiteLatino, you can be white if you so choose. We don't really care. New Rule... Rose you did a good job representing Mississippi, uneducated, can't write a clear concise sentence, and you are a racist that can't even spell RACIST!

So you're saying it's racist for whites to stand up for whites?

  87. yup

It's cool. Me and my local Latina sorority normally have white women themed parties. We dye our hair terrible shades of blonde, wear gaudy jewelry, listen to bad pop music, and talk about why African children are thinner than us. We then do the daily ritual of watching House Wives of something County and prepare for a duckface contest.

Someone's going to be offended by that, but lol. Considering all the freedom of speech comments on here then anyone can do anything offensive. Being offensive works both ways, guys 😛

You forgot about the contest to see who can use "Like and OMG" the most in one sentence.

I highly doubt you would find anyone that would think that's offensive. I think it would be pretty funny to see personally. To that point you often see black comedians make jokes about white people and of course also black people, but if a white person makes a joke about a black person it is terribly racist, an atrocity, unacceptable, and etc etc. I am kinda tired of hearing everyone cry racism you can't say anything anymore without it being racist or offending someone. Just my opinion though.

Neither do you when you cousins marry, you have two moms (no dad), or or your dad impregnates you.

While most of us would agree this was in poor taste, please remember they are sorority girls; by definition they don't get it.

People are so eager to jump at the chance to call "racism". It is harmless fun. Everything we see or do does not have to be so political.

I agree with you. I don't think this is a big deal... people need to lighten up. We can poke fun at cultural stereotypes on TV shows or in the movies but the kids can't throw a Mexican themed party. The amount of attention to this is ridiculous.

You know what? I care. I'm a 60 year old white woman, a grandmother and a human being. This isn't about free speech or the freedom to have a good time or anything else like that. It's about people giving themselves permission to pretend that they are better than everyone else, to pretend that being superior gives them the right to treat the rest of the world like their sandbox, to believe that no one else's pain and suffering means anything...and the right to mock anyone who isn't them. In other words, it's about a group of brats with a myopic view of the world around them and an atrophied sense of compassion. I feel sorry for them and for all the fellow travelers who shrug and see "What's the big deal?' If you don't know already, you are as pitiful as these young women. On the plus side, they certainly know how to apply make-up. Their parents can be proud.

Not all Latinos are Mexican. Our Culture does not use Mexican hats or Ponchos. This article should indicate "Mocking Mexicans only" they are the only Latin Country that ware this type of hats and ponchos. I am latin and this article does not bother me at all. Even Geoge Lopez makes fun of the Mexicans and people do not get botherd. CNN find a life quit posting articles like this and indicating that all Latinos are mocked by this. Maybe the Mexicans!!!
