Biracial, lesbian contestant a trailblazer in Miss South Carolina pageant

By Moni Basu, CNN

(CNN) - At 7, Analouisa Valencia was crowned Palmetto Princess in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She relished it - and like a lot of little girls, she dreamed of becoming Miss America  one day.

In a few months, Valencia, now 19, will take the stage for the Miss South Carolina contest, hoping for victory and a chance to compete for the coveted national title.

But she's no ordinary contestant. She will mark a first in her conservative home state.

Valencia's father is from Mexico; her mother, an African-American. Valencia came out as a lesbian when she was in the ninth grade and took her girlfriend Tamyra Bell to her high school prom.

She was already shredding stereotypes of beauty pageants because she's biracial. But a lesbian beauty pageant contestant from South Carolina?

"I just really wanted to be an advocate for equality for everyone this year," she says on the phone before heading off to classes at Spartanburg Community College. She eventually wants to earn a business degree at the University of South Carolina.

Her participation in the Miss South Carolina contest is in part a human rights campaign: she is promoting rights for people with special needs (she coaches Special Olympics gymnasts), for racial minorities, for gay people.

She has already thought about her answers if the judges question her on this score. She will be perfectly open and honest about who she is, about their opinions.

"I want to show the judges who I really am," she says. "I want to show them how passionate I am about my platform, how passionate I am for being an advocate for equality."

South Carolina ranks low nationally on LGBT rights. It bans same-sex marriage, does not afford employment, housing or hate-crime protections for LGBT people and has unconstitutional sodomy laws still on the books.

For Valencia to make a run for Miss South Carolina is "courageous," says Ryan Wilson, the executive director of the South Carolina Equality Coalition, a statewide LGBT civil rights group.

"I think it takes a lot of courage for any young person to live openly and authentically. We are extremely proud of Analouisa," Wilson says.

He says beauty pageant contestants can be stereotyped, but they can often afford young women a chance to show leadership.

"She can be a role model for LGBT youth," Wilson says.

There hasn't been negative feedback, Valencia says. So far.

But she's prepared to cope with ugliness if it surfaces. For the time being, she's enjoying her title of Miss Lyman, her hometown just a few miles from Spartanburg.

She's been taking voice lessons every Friday. At the Miss South Carolina pageant in July, she will sing Leona Lewis' "Footprints in the Sand." She's confident she will make an impression.

      " – it is immoral."

The Biblical condemnation of homosexuality is based on human ignorance, suspicion of those who are different, and an overwhelming concern for ensuring the survival of the people. Since the Bible regards homosexuality as a capital crime (Leviticus 20:13), it clearly assumes that homosexuality is a matter of free choice, a deliberate rebellion against God. We have learned from modern science that people do not choose to be gay or straight; hence it is neither logical nor moral to condemn those whose nature it is to be gay or lesbian.

I'm glad you realize that religion is the catalyst for much of this hatred and that you are strong enough to speak out about it. If you look closely, you will see that they are only following the bible and its teachings. For true morality, throw the bible and all religion out and look within yourself. I think you are already on your way. Good luck.

GAY HOLLYWOOD, THE TV NETWORKS, and the MUSIC INDUSTRY have succesfully pushed the gay agenda by targeting the Younger Generations. They have CONDITIONED 60% of the youth born after 1965 that such behavior is normal through the targeted use of tv shows, movies, and music videosclearly aimed at desensitizing the population. Since children are impressionable and generally follow the latest fads, all that needs to be done to complete their agenda is to weed out those who still resist or oppose the GLBT's views by targeting the opposition as bigots.

Your arguement states that the Media and others have corrupted our children at a young, impressionable age. Isn't that what churches do in order to keep and build congregations? Brainwash is a better term for what religions do to the young before they are capable of making a decision about what to believe. It is force fed to them as fact. Now THAT is disturbing

      • Guest2

Well said, Jeff. And brainwashing is most successful when you keep opposing viewpoints at bay which is getting harder to do everyday in this information age. The reason young people are more accepting is because the are better educated and have access to a greater body of knowledge.

You keep spewing nonsense. Being gay has more to do with the senses that genetics my friend. Remove the senses from people (sigh, smell, touch, hearing) and you wouldn't know if you were gay or straight or bi. The brain gets excited through the senses and that then becomes wired into the brain. You can remove the senses of real genetic conditions such as autism and you'd still be autistic even without your senses. Well if you were born with no sight or smell or touch I guarantee that you would not be able to distinguish "gay" from the otherwise. You're stating BS and I'll call you on it.

Again. Remove the senses and you can't distinguish between gay or the like. Being born with a skin condition happens regardless of the senses. Gay is strictly related to the senses and what stimulates the brain. Just because over time the brain develops in a different way due to the chemicals released during stimulation doesn't make it genetic. It is not defined, it is not a constant. Let's take a gay man and remove all of his senses and have a woman touch him, lets see what he does. If it's "genetic" he would innately know regardless, right?

    • Well...

They have proved that brains of gays are different, but the question is more of a chicken and the egg, they don't know if being gay came first and then the change in the brain, or if the brain came first which made you gay.

I can choose Coke or Pepsi, and not struggle with it everyday.
The choice a gay person has is weather to act on it or not. The desire to act on it is not a choice, since they cannot simple choose to have the thought or desire occur.

Way to go, I would not have been able to clarify it as comprehensively as you did. Unfortunately there are numerous morons out there that do not understand science and who believe that Earth is 5000 years old, neither do they know what chromosomes are and how it affects the gender. Thank you (BTW I am straight and have tons of gay friends who are the most delightful people I know).

No, being gay is not a choice. Living a gay or straight lifestyle is a choice. It is so sad that you are in a position where you have to fight natural instincts everyday because some religious groups have convinced you that you are not OK. Life is too short for you be at war with yourself! The two choices you have left yourself: be alone or partner with someone who is not your first and to whom you are not attracted. That's not fair to you or the other person. Time to stand up for yourself!!

  45. Really?

"The goal is to infilitrate the normal avenues by taking fringe stuff and making it appear as normal."

Because it is normal. Heterosexual behavior and homosexual behavior are normal aspects of human sexuality. Despite the persistence of stereotypes that portray lesbian, gay, and bisexual people as disturbed, several decades of research and clinical experience have led all mainstream medical and mental health organizations in this country to conclude that these orientations represent normal forms of human experience.

This is truly a non-story. She is one of how many contestants in the South Carolina Miss America contest? There are how many national contests with how many contestants? Do the math! Without having the exact numbers, I'm sure the total of contestants nationally has to be in the neighborhood of 2,500 and this article is written as if she is ready to wear the winner's crown and true to CNN, it's due to racism if she isn't ultimately crowned Miss America.

By that logic, Rosa Parks should have just given up here seat on the bus, and went to law school to fight about it. I'm sure she would have been just as effective an advocate of change if she had done that.

Or maybe, small changes here and there are what really change societal views on things. Just a thought.

This is a non-story; being gay/lesbian today is hip and cool and trendy. Not exactly the case for black people in Rosa Park's time.

This Truth guy though?! There are plenty of clinical psychiatric research studies that he could be apart of. Judging by his paranoid and bizarre delusions, as well as his disorganized speech and thinking, he clearly needs to seek a psychiatrist. It would also behoove him, and the rest of society, that he seek a surgeon for a vasectomy. People of his nature should never breed; they don't produce viable offspring.

Randy, that is just a blatant ignorant statement. We went to Afghanistan because thats where Al Qaeda was being supported/protected by the Taliban. We went into Iraq because we thought there was WMDs(right or wrong).

Yes, soldiers died. This happens when you are in a state of war.

Your boy BO is the weakest, most incompetent president we have ever had, or will ever see. Not only did his administration not support the security requests of our diplomats, they did nothing and have done NOTHING in response to this. Your response is to point at Bush. Why do you blame Bush? because you have no defense, no argument to justify this president.

4 Americans died as a result of Obama's incompetence.

4000 Americans died because of Bush's incompetence.

Seriously, why do conservatives not hold Bush accountable for the complete and utter failure of his foreign policy and economic policies.

Bush left the country in an economic spiral, a failed housing market, a banking industry hanging on by a thread and bailed out by taxpayers, unemployment skyrocketing, and the US mired in a politically justified trillion dollar war in Iraq based on fabrications and misinformation.

I am no fan of Barack Obama, but GWB was the worst president in US history by an exponential margin.

      It is not even close.

Jimmy Carter did not even leave the country in as bad shape as GWB did.
